H

appy new year! Last year was certainly a year of highs and lows with life finally getting back to normal after three years of Covid only to be hit by rising interest rates, inflation and the cost of living crisis, while retailers were also experiencing a cost of doing business crisis. So what will 2024 bring us? One word: artificial intelligence (AI). When we look at retail, today’s customers want it all—a tailored, fast, frictionless shopping experience—and AI tools certainly have the potential to improve that experience. Research shows 91 per cent of retailers are investing in generative artificial intelligence (GAI) and if they play their cards right, they could unlock billions of dollars in value by the end of the decade with the responsible adoption of the technology. According to a new report, GAI could contribute between $45 billion and $115 billion a year to Australia’s economy by 2030 and retail has been identified as one of the four key sectors poised to benefit from GAI. Indeed, the technology could add between $3 billion and $9 billion annually to the sector in Australia. The technology revolution is showing no sign of slowing down, as AI is making its way into the home industry. In the ever-evolving world of design, interior design trends are influenced by cultural nuances, technological advances and significant global events. It’s evident that design concepts aren’t solely born from human creativity anymore and AI has begun to play a pivotal role in forecasting the future of design. Check out the seven trends that AI predicts will dominate in 2024 in our interior feature on page 8. After a successful launch last year, Giftguide Hot 100 is back by popular demand, recognising and celebrating the hard work and accomplishments of all those wonderful businesses in the gift and homewares industry. Once again we asked our readers to vote for their favourite wholesalers and retailers and we couldn’t have asked for a better response. We have compiled a top 10 for each of the 10 categories in our special Hot 100 feature on page 12. The inspiration behind launching CARDBOARD. stemmed from founders Portia Austin and Ali Head’s own frustrations as consumers, where they were constantly unsatisfied with the traditional, expensive and uninspired designs prevalent in the greeting card industry. The business made its debut in October 2023. Read more on page 22. While we are just settling into summer and enjoying the warm weather, we are already looking ahead trend-wise to see what’s coming up next season. On page 28 we check out five trends for autumn/winter 2024 that will impact the gift and homewares industry one way or another. Don’t miss our special features on Easter (page 26) and Mother’s Day (page 32) where you will find a selection of Easter-inspired items and our favourite gifts for mum and of course our product pages, which showcase all the latest ranges and collections for your store shelves and start on page 38. I hope you enjoy reading the issue. G

Biophilic living room trend

Giftguide takes a look at seven interior design trends for 2024… according to AI.

I

n the ever-evolving world of design, interior design trends are influenced by cultural nuances, technological advances and significant global events. It’s evident that design concepts aren’t solely born from human creativity anymore. Artificial Intelligence (AI), tapping into vast reservoirs of data, has begun to play a pivotal role in forecasting the future of design. Let’s delve into the seven trends that AI predicts will dominate in 2024.

1. Soft forms In a shift from the angular, boxy designs that dominated interiors for some time, 2024 heralds the rise of soft forms. This trend is about embracing the fluid, the curvilinear and the organic. As we witness a renaissance of curves and arches in interior design, there’s a palpable feel of returning to nature and simplicity. One of the most evident illustrations of this trend is the resurgence of archways in modern homes. Traditionally rooted in Roman architecture, arches have a historical and timeless essence. Incorporating arches, whether in doorways or as a design element in wall décor, offers a soft transition between spaces. They effortlessly turn ordinary doorways into elegant passages. Furniture, too, embraces this change. Gone 8

giftguideonline.com.au

are the straight-backed chairs and sofas. Instead, we see couches with rounded edges, oval coffee tables and chairs that seem to hug the sitter. This return to softer forms doesn’t just influence the visual aspect but also impacts functionality. Curved furniture often allows for better flow in a room, making movement more intuitive and spaces feel larger. Decor items follow suit. Vases, mirrors and even light fixtures have adopted rounded, fluid shapes, echoing natural forms. Think of a pebble-shaped mirror or a pendant light that mimics the gentle droop of a flower bud. These fluid shapes often evoke feelings of comfort, safety and relaxation. They eliminate the harsh juxtapositions that sharper lines present, giving rooms a harmonious and unified feel. There’s also a psychological element at play. Curves and soft forms are often perceived as more welcoming and nurturing, resonating with our innate love for nature and its organic, irregular patterns.

2. Biophilic design As urbanisation continues to surge, the inherent human longing for nature is driving one of the most influential design trends of 2024: biophilic design. This isn’t just a trend; it’s a response to the increasing disconnect people feel from the natural world, emphasising a

interior

symbiotic relationship between nature, design and humanity. Biophilic design goes beyond merely adding a plant to a room. It dives deeper into the architectural and design processes, strategically integrating natural elements into built spaces to create harmonious and health-promoting environments. Natural light, for instance, plays a significant role. Large windows, skylights and open spaces are designed to let sunlight flood interiors, syncing indoor environments with the external natural rhythms. Use of natural materials is another cornerstone of this trend. Woods, stones and other raw materials aren’t just chosen for their aesthetic appeal but also for their tactile, sensory-rich experience. These materials not only ground the design in nature but also serve as a testament to sustainability. As concerns about the environment grow, the selection of ethicallysourced and sustainable materials in interior designs is paramount. Moreover, the integration of indoor plants is intensified in biophilic interiors. Plants become central design elements, purifying air and offering psychological benefits. Sustainability is intricately tied to biophilic design. As designers and homeowners alike become more ecologically conscious, there’s a push towards creating interiors that are not just inspired by nature, but also kind to it.

3. Neo-neutral colours As the curtain rises on 2024, the realm of interior design is set to embrace a harmonious blend of colours that find their roots in both modern aesthetics and nature’s embrace. The colour palette is evolving, signaling a confluence of the timeless allure of neutral shades with the raw, organic touch of earthy tones. Neutral colours, with their unmatched versatility, have always held a significant place in interior design. The colour trend leans towards neo neutrals, which are fresh,

grounding and inherently calming but possess a contemporary edge. These colours are subtler, more sophisticated and perfectly tuned to the modern homeowner’s desires, infusing spaces with a sense of peace and elegance. Imagine soft greys and gentle off-whites that provide the perfect canvas for various design elements. Complementing the understated charm of neo neutrals are the rich and evocative earthy tones. Drawing inspiration from the biophilic design movement, colours such as terracotta, deep browns and soothing beiges are set to become the stars of many interiors. These hues, deeply rooted in the landscapes we love, bring tranquility to spaces. They weave a narrative of authenticity, warmth and raw beauty, transforming homes into nurturing sanctuaries. When combined, neo neutrals and earthy tones offer an exquisite balance, creating interiors that are both modern and comforting. The resulting spaces become serene sanctuaries, grounded in nature and tinged with contemporary elegance. It’s a harmonious blend, celebrating the past’s timeless charm while looking forward to the future’s innovative spirit.

4. Resplendent accent colours In addition to the prevailing trend of neo neutrals, 2024 is set to embrace a luxurious colour palette that promises to elevate interiors to new pinnacles of sophistication. These resplendent hues will take centre stage, either as accent colours or intricate details, complementing and enhancing the muted backdrop of contemporary neutrals. Classic blue, often referred to as a timeless hue, resonates deeply with a sense of calm and stability. It embodies the vast expanse of the twilight sky and the deep waters of the ocean, bringing an element of tranquility and reflection into homes. When used in interiors, this shade instills a sense of trust and peacefulness, making it ideal for spaces meant for relaxation and introspection.

Complementing the cool tones of blue is the ever-enchanting palette of greens. Rooted in nature, green shades epitomise growth, renewal and vigor. The year 2024 places a strong emphasis on these green hues, with a special nod to their ability to bridge the gap between the indoors and the lush world outside, cultivating spaces that breathe and rejuvenate. The design sphere of 2024 also welcomes the dramatic allure of jewel tones. Think rich emeralds, deep sapphires and mesmerising amethysts. These shades are reminiscent of treasured gemstones and when introduced into living spaces, they exude an aura of luxury, drama and opulence. Additionally, moody luxurious palettes are making waves, with sumptuous hues like rich burgundy, navy blue and dark emerald taking centre stage. These colours, intense and evocative, imbue interiors with a sense of depth, warmth and sophistication. They transform ordinary spaces into plush sanctuaries that speak of elegance and affluence.

5. Open plan evolution The open-plan design, celebrated for its spaciousness and seamless flow, is set for a transformative phase in 2024. Born out of a desire to create expansive, integrated living spaces, the classic open-plan approach has been embraced by many modern homes. It epitomises unobstructed spaces that encourage family interactions and uninterrupted lines of sight. However, as lifestyles change and the lines between work, leisure and relaxation blur, especially in our ever-increasing work-fromhome era, the need for distinct spaces within the overarching open plan has emerged. It’s not about reverting back to boxed rooms and closed doors, but adapting to the multifaceted needs of today’s inhabitants. Future-forward interior designs will focus on infusing subtle demarcations within these

JANUARY 2024 9

interior

spaces. This can be achieved by cleverly using decor elements like statement-making area rugs or distinctive lighting fixtures, to signify different functional areas. Colour gradients or tonal shifts can act as soft borders, guiding inhabitants from one ‘zone’ to another, without compromising the sense of openness. Another game-changer is the use of multifunctional furniture. Movable partitions, foldable desks or modular seating arrangements can be reconfigured based on the occasion, whether it’s an intimate family dinner or a workrelated video conference. The evolution of the open-plan design is all about ensuring flexibility while enhancing functionality. This newfound dynamism in openplan living ensures that spaces are adaptable, versatile and perfectly aligned with the fluidity of contemporary lifestyles.

6. Technology integration In the 21st Century, the seamless fusion of technology and interior design is not just a luxury but an essential component of modern living. As the boundaries between our digital and physical environments blur, the interior design landscape of 2024 is set to be revolutionised by advanced technology integration. The realm of interior design is experiencing a paradigm shift, ushered in by the innovative integration of technology. This fusion is reshaping our living spaces, pushing boundaries and elevating our daily experiences, emphasising both aesthetics and functionality. Central to this transformation is smart lighting. It transcends mere illumination. Advanced smart lighting systems, equipped with sensors and AI, can adjust according to the natural circadian rhythms of occupants, changing intensity and hue to mirror different times of the day. Whether it’s the warm golden glow of a simulated sunset or the invigorating brightness that mimics a sunny day, lighting now responds to, and even anticipates, our needs. Additionally, smart furniture is carving its niche. Consider the elegance of a dining table with built-in wireless charging or the convenience of voice-activated window blinds. These pieces exemplify how design and tech can coexist, maximising comfort without cluttering space.

7. Soothing atmosphere In the ever-accelerating tempo of the modern world, our homes are increasingly evolving into 10 giftguideonline.com.au

tranquil retreats from external commotion. Central to this serene landscape are pastel colours. These hues, with their inherently soft and muted character, are taking precedence in home palettes. Pastels, ranging from gentle lavenders to subtle mints, possess an innate ability to calm the mind and soothe the senses. They impart a dreamy quality, reminiscent of early morning skies or the tender petals of spring blooms. When integrated into interiors, these colours act as a balm, reducing stress and creating a haven for relaxation. But it isn’t solely about the colour palettes. The very ethos of a ‘soothing atmosphere’ extends to the incorporation of wellness items in our living spaces. As mental and emotional wellbeing becomes a prime focus, items that foster these feelings find their rightful place in homes. Aroma diffusers, for instance, are gaining prominence. With a few drops of essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus, they infuse spaces with therapeutic fragrances that can relax, invigorate or heal, turning rooms into rejuvenating sanctuaries. Moreover, dedicated spaces for mindfulness practices are emerging as a trend. Meditation corners, adorned with comfortable floor cushions, soft lighting and perhaps a calming water feature, offer residents a dedicated spot to breathe, reflect and disconnect. These niches, no matter how small, act as anchors, reminding individuals to pause and find moments of peace amidst their busy schedules.

Overall trend forecast As we look at the interior design trends predicted for 2024, a clear narrative emerges: a seamless marriage of nature’s serenity, the warmth of comforting design and the intelligence of modern technology. It’s not just about crafting interiors that are visually captivating; it’s about shaping spaces that resonate on a deeper, more soulful level. In a world where our surroundings heavily influence our mood and wellbeing, this emphasis on holistic interiors becomes paramount. We’re looking at environments that don’t just reflect our style but also enhance our emotional and mental wellbeing, becoming true sanctuaries in every sense. As we move forward, these interior design trends mark a pivotal shift in interior design philosophy, focusing on creating harmonious spaces that cater to both our aesthetic and emotional needs. small business

IN THE MOMENT Giftguide chats to the founders of CARDBOARD., who believe that people still want to connect with one another in a thoughtful and considered way.

T

he inspiration behind launching CARDBOARD. stemmed from founders Portia Austin and Ali Head’s own frustrations as consumers, where they were constantly unsatisfied with the traditional, expensive and uninspired designs prevalent in the greeting card industry. “We were motivated to offer something more creative, fun and affordable to people,” the duo says. “Not to mention in 2023, stopping at a convenience store at 22

giftguideonline.com.au

the 11th hour to buy an overpriced and unoriginal greeting card is not our definition of convenience. No matter what stage of life you are at, there always comes a point in time where you need a greeting card.” The business made its debut in October 2023, which considering the current cost of living crisis could raise some eyebrows, however, Austin and Head didn’t think twice. “The world is incredibly unpredictable and quite frankly

a little scary right now, so in our opinion we think it’s the perfect time to launch. “We have had a challenge to overcome nearly every day. We are in full small business mode at the moment, dealing with small little fires on a daily basis. Our biggest challenge to date was probably getting the product right. We want an affordable product, but also high quality and sustainable. For us, being sustainable and socially responsible is simply

small business

non-negotiable. All our paper resources are FSC certified and we print locally in Australia,” they explain. What truly sets CARDBOARD. apart is the unique bundling option. With its bundling offering, you can individually select a variety of cards in advance, ensuring you’re always prepared for any occasion. “We understand that life can be hectic and it’s easy to forget important occasions. No more last-minute dashes to the store or scrambling for a card; CARDBOARD. helps you get organised ahead of time, so you can spend more time celebrating. “We feel passionate about this as it means that you can be prepared for the month, season or year ahead. You can even subscribe based on the frequency you require cards, swing tags or place cards, to really take the hassle away,” they add. “Our customers are encouraged to purchase a refillable box to store their product in—a little 24

giftguideonline.com.au

CARDBOARD. home. The idea around this is, they simply need one box forever and can keep refilling it with cards. “We believe in the power of thoughtful gestures, whether it’s a birthday, a holiday, a sorry (we’ve all been there) or a simple thank you. Our carefully curated collection of greeting cards reflects this sentiment, offering a wide range of designs to suit every heartfelt, funny or even tragic moment in your life.” In addition to greeting cards, CARDBOARD. also offers swing tags (for those that don’t have all the words) and place cards (to create a barrier between you and small talk). “Whether you’re dressing up a gift, decorating your table for a special event or adding a personal touch to your creations, our swing tags and place cards are the perfect finishing touch. “As we do with all our collections, we have both fun and colourful designs as well as more traditional ones, so hopefully everyone

can find something they like. “The goal with our latest holiday collection was to celebrate the holidays as an entirety, so (nearly) everyone can find something for every occasion. We have included Christmas, Hannuka, New Year and more generic holiday cards and swing tags. We wanted to play on the traditions of the holidays, but also have a little fun with it,” the duo enthuses. While the business is only a few months old, Austin and Head have big plans for CARDBOARD. “We definitely want to expand into other product categories when the time is right. At this stage we are focusing on greeting cards, swing tags and place cards, but that being said, we have a few things in the pipeline. “We are of course hoping for multiple retailers to stock our product. In order to achieve our mission to support customers spending less time on admin and more time on celebrating, we would love to be stocked in multiple locations.” G

TREND ALERT:

autumn/winter 2024

trend - storied interiors

In a Giftguide exclusive, Tara Solberg, owner of retail store Few and Far and wholesale brand Indigo Love, will share her experience, expertise and knowledge in a series of articles. In this issue she shares her autumn/winter 2024 trend predictions.

A

s we are at the start of a new year, 2023 seems to have gone in a flash. With travel and international trade fairs back in full swing, I’ve done my fair share of keeping my steps up walking through many expo halls, sourcing products and finding inspiration. Not to mention sitting next to strangers on planes, having my head buried in product design and research, gearing up for an exciting autumn/winter 2024 product release for my wholesale brand, Indigo Love. While trends come and go and I don’t necessarily follow them, the thrill of ‘what’s next’ has always had me curious, so here are my top 5 autumn/winter predictions for 2024.

1. Rustic textures & natural materials

trend - curves and edges

trend - storied interiors

Texture is set to take over interiors and that’s something I’m really excited about. Those of you who know me or the Indigo Love brand will understand that texture plays such an important role in creating a handcrafted, earthy interior. While there will always be a place for smooth and sleek finishes, we will see a more organic and animated use of texture. Think natural distressed timbers, ceramic glazes with beautiful imperfections and hand-woven textiles and rustic velvets, mixed with graphic natural stones, marbles and terracotta.

2. Curves and edges We’ve definitely seen a lot of curved furniture over the past few years and I don’t see this going anywhere soon, but pair this with more angular, traditional, block silhouettes and you’ll have the perfect juxtaposition to create visual interest. Try combining a curved sofa with a set of square set chairs (or vice versa) or a combination of round and square side tables—the combinations are endless.

trend - individuality and personalisation

30 giftguideonline.com.au

3. Storied interiors This has got to be my favourite trend. I’ve never been a fan of the cookie cutter interior, where everything matches and there is absolutely no sign of surprise and delight. Gone are the days when you just furnish your home with the ‘latest and greatest’ all at once— like you’ve just stepped inside a display home that nobody has ever lived in. Our interiors should reflect who we are—our personality, where we’ve been and the things we’ve collected along the way. Building a storied interior takes time. However, the pieces in our homes should be individual to us: vintage, antique, heirlooms or artisanal pieces rather than mass produced elements. Our interiors should feel ‘lived in’ or evoke a sense of playfulness.

4. Individuality & personalisation Following on from creating storied interiors, what could be more personal than a trend based on individuality? How can you incorporate existing pieces you

trend - mixed metals

already own into a new interior and re-contextualise them in this new setting to create a room with real soul? I’ve personally just been through this experience, working with an architect to create our very own dream home. When going through this process, we thought about our unique tastes, lifestyle and needs—the way we use our home and what brings us the most joy. We communicated these things to our architects who have created what I believe is a truly one-of-a-kind home that is a reflection of us.

5. Mixed metals Throughout my recent travels and visiting plenty of trade fairs and showrooms, if there is one trend that is here to stay, it’s the mixing of metal finishes. We’ve seen plenty of brass in recent years, but now we’ll see a combination of classic and contemporary warmer metals with burnished finishes, unlacquered brass and polished nickel. Whatever you choose to follow, just make sure it’s true to you and what you love and that way you can live with it for a lifetime. G
