County board passes resolution supporting Israelis On Oct. 16, the Westchester Board of Legislators unanimously passed a resolution in support of the people of Israel. This resolution was drafted in response to the atrocities committed by the terrorist organization Hamas on Oct. 7, against the people of Israel. This unprecedented series of terrorist attacks was the single most horrific attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust and resulted in the massacre of over 1,400 Israelis and abduction of over 200 hostages, plus the death and abduction of over a hundred foreign nationals including Americans. Chairman Vedat Gashi said, ‘For the families lost, families torn apart, and families still to be rescued in
Gaza we condemn the terrorist organization Hamas and support the right for Israel to defend itself… we pray for a swift resolution with as few casualties as possible.’ Vice Chairwoman Nancy Barr said, ‘The invasion of Israel by Hamas terrorists and the constant barrage of rocket fire against Israel cannot be tolerated. Many residents of Westchester, including many in my District, have been deeply and personally affected by these attacks. I stand firmly with Israel and the Jewish people as they defend themselves against this existential threat. As an American Jew, I particularly appreciate my non-Jewish colleagues who stand with me in solidarity at this difficult time. And I pray for the safe return
of the hostages and the healing of all who are suffering from this ongoing trauma. Legislator Erika Pierce said, ‘Hamas’ actions were so awful, so traumatizing that the word horrifying does not suffice. As a Jewish person I am in deep mourning. I mourn those lost. I mourn those traumatized. I mourn, as well, the civilians in Gaza who are paying the price for Hamas’ actions. We must bring home the hostages and find our way back towards peace.’ This resolution follows a press statement issued by the Westchester Board of Legislators on October 10th declaring its unequivocal support and solidarity with Israel and condemning the actions of the terrorist group Hamas.

The town/village of Harrison mayor-supervisor’s seat is heating up quickly as November is around the corner. This year’s election is an interesting one with a three-legged race for the position. Those candidates in the running are current Republican Harrison Mayor-Supervisor Rich Dionisio, Democrat candidate Mark Jaffe and former Harrison Mayor-Supervisor Ron Belmont, who’s running as a write-in candidate. Belmont’s campaign for election is an interesting story. As some have noted, Belmont will be a write-in candidate as the time period for endorsements has passed. Belmont served as mayor and supervisor from 2011-2020 and spent 37 years at Harrison’s Recreation Department as its Superintendent. Belmont mentioned the recreation department as one the best in New York state, providing the number of parks in Harrison and the acquisition of Harrison Meadows (formerly Willow Ridge Golf Course). Belmont said that a lot of people had come to him asking for him to run again. One of Belmont’s goals, if elected, is to bring back honesty and integrity to the town, widening the tax base to put less burden on the residents and senior housing. Jaffe is another candidate running for mayor-supervisor. Similar to Belmont, a lot of people came to Jaffe to encourage him to run. Jaffe started as executive director and is now currently the CEO of the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce. Jaffe’s goals for Harrison is to have open doors with taxpayers, no secret excretive meetings, cut overspending and overdevelopment. Making sure that everyone in Harrison has a voice and increase voices in the town meetings.

Regardless of party affiliation, gender, economic status, Jaffe is there to serve the people full time. Jaffe believes strongly in public service and wants to make Harrison a better place. The theme for Jaffe’s campaign and goals overall is transparency to its residents and honest bipartisan leadership for Harrison. Dionisio is the current mayor up for reelection. Dionisio grew up in Harrison, he and his family went through the Harrison school system. He said he’s well invested into the town. He worked in Manhattan for 15 years and opened up a electrical contracting business. He took over Harrison Meadows, construction projects and helped veterans with tax cuts. He mentioned receiving a grant for sidewalks for Union Avenue, going from Nelson to Mamaroneck avenues, making the goal safer to walk. He introduced legislation for term limits, to help increase new voices and new ideas. If reelected, he wants to get recreation in pattern of progressing as quickly as possible, but holding down the tax cap. Goals are to continue investing in the Harrison Recreation Center, where it saves the taxpayer dollars and have the building built and be environmental friendly as well.

Rye Rotary announces annual Holiday Food Drive The Rotary Club of Rye has announced its 2023 Food Drive to be held from Oct. 20 through Nov. 17 to benefit Bread of Life Food Pantry in Rye, The Carver Center in Port Chester, The Don Bosco Community Center in Port Chester and My Sister’s Place in White Plains. For the past 4 years, The Rotary Club of Rye has conducted a holiday food drive to help stock pantries that provide direct service to others in our community and beyond. Lifting Up Westchester unveils new Job facility Lifting Up Westchester (LUW) staff, clients, supporters, and community partners were on hand to celebrate the opening of LUW’s Job Central, a new facility to provide job readiness and placement services for the unemployed and underemployed in Westchester County. The new facility was made possible through a two-year, $200,000 community impact grant from KeyBank Foundation, originally announced in a press release issued in November 2022. The grant enabled LUW to renovate the physical space at 148 Hamilton Avenue in White Plains, hire staff, establish employment partnerships, and work with the Department of Social Services and other social welfare organizations to build a pipeline to targeted populations. The center strives to assist an estimated 175 unemployed and significantly under-employed individuals over the grant’s two-year funding period. A ribbon-cutting and brief speaking program led by Anahaita Kotval, Chief Executive Officer of Lifting Up Westchester was held earlier today for media and the community introducing the center and thanking KeyBank for their partnership. “The opening of Job Central is an exciting
milestone for us,” said Kotval. “It allows us to expand our employment services to a broader segment of the Westchester community at a time when employers are struggling to find candidates. Job Central will help community members who want to work overcome challenges to finding – and maintaining – employment. We thank KeyBank for supporting our mission and helping us lift individuals out of poverty.” Additional speakers from LUW were Chief Operating Officer, Willa Brody, Director of Strategic Programs, Debbie Hertz, and Job Central Manager Paulette Madianitti. Hudson Valley Restaurant Week has arrived. A record number of Westchester restaurants are participating in this semiannual celebration of the booming culinary scene. Over 70 eateries from all corners of the County have joined in the excitement. County Executive George Latimer said: “Hudson Valley Restaurant Week is always a fan favorite. Larchmont golfers help raise 50K+ for families of premature babies Two Larchmont golfers helped drive the green – more than $50,000 – to support local families of premature babies during The Tiny Miracles Foundation’s Oct. 2 golf outing at the Aspetuck Valley Country Club in Weston. This year’s 5th annual event drew 72 participants, including Larchmont’s Chris Riendeau, whose Stamford Hospital foursome won the men’s Scramble prize, and

Habitat for Humanity NYC, county launches New Flagship ReStore Habitat for Humanity New York City and Westchester County volunteers, board members, as well as local community leaders gathered in Yonkers on Friday, Oct. 13 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the grand opening of the non-profit’s regional flagship ReStore retail location at 470 Nepperhan Ave. Spanning 8,400-square-feet, this newest ReStore, the store that builds homes and reduces waste, features gently-used and new overstock and second-hand items for the home, such as furniture, appliances, art, home décor, and building materials, at 50 to 80 percent off their original retail prices. Here’s to hope It doesn’t matter the sport or the level of play, there’s nothing quite like playoff time, is there? This weekend, the bulk of Section 1’s field hockey and soccer teams will begin their postseason play, meaning that hope around the area is at an all time high, with the end game—a trip to states— firmly in sight. More than any other time, aside maybe from the start of the preseason, this leadup to the playoffs is a time where every team, regardless of their seeding, is imagining “what could be.” And it’s not hard to understand why. Upsets, by nature, are rare. There’s a reason some teams earn top seeds and others find themselves
with an uphill climb when it comes to vying for a section title. But it should be noted that, especially in the high school landscape, seedings can be determined by a number of factors that don’t necessarily correspond to the likelihood of a team making a deep run. Sure, there are always going to be the clear favorites. Teams like Mamaroneck’s field hockey squad, the girls soccer team from Albertus Magnus or the boys soccer team from Scarsdale have their top seeds for a reason—a continued twomonth stretch of dominance that saw them take on, and defeat, all comers. But while these teams may arrive in the postseason with all the accolades, there are no shortage of contenders—especially in the soccer landscape—that have the
ability to knock off these top squads on any given day. Part of that has to do with scheduling. Sure the seedings are determined, in part, by strength of schedule, but there are plenty of smaller schools who come into the playoffs with less-than-stellar records that are a result of taking on larger schools, something that shouldn’t be ignored when it comes to making postseason prognostications. The second factor is simply the nature of sports like soccer. Section 1 playoff action begins this weekend By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor
The boys and girls soccer sectionals seedings were announced this week, and postseason action is slated to kick off o Friday as teams eagerly eye a Section 1 plaque. With a number of intriguing matchups this weekend, let’s look around the area and see where are hometown teams shake out. In the boys soccer landscape, one of the most anticipated first-round matchups will be played at Mamaroneck on Friday afternoon, when the No. 8 seeded Tigers host No. 9 seed New Rochelle in a continuation of a long-running league rivalry. The Tigers have handled the Huguenots thus far this season, beating New Rochelle twice during the regular season by scores of 1-0 and 3-0. But New Rochelle has played well down the stretch, earning wins against Harrison and Rye and playing 14-0 Scarsdale tough in a 5-3 loss. Along with Scarsdale, Eastchester (14-2) finds itself as one of the top con-
tenders in Class AA, earning a No. 2 seed and a first round game against Riverside on Oct. 20. Harrison (8-7) has slid into the No. 5 spot and will have a tough first-round matchup against No. 12 Greeley. In Class A, Rye (12-3) secured a No. 2 seed and a first round bye, keeping them out of action until Oct. 23. They are on the opposite side of the bracket from undefeated top-seed Tappan Zee, something which could bode well for a deep playoff run. Rye Neck and Bronxville slot in as the No. 5 and 6 seeds in the Class B bracket respectively. The Broncos will host No. 11 Hastings on Friday, while the Panthers host Pleasantville. The two Panther teams met in the final game of the regular season on Oct. 13, battling to a 0-0 draw. No. 5 Tuckahoe will travel to No. 4 Hamilton in the Class C quarterfinal round on Oct. 23. Over on the girls’ side, Class AAA Mamaroneck will have to get by RC Ketcham in an outbracket game on Oct. 21 to advance, while
