EDITOR’S NOTE

I T ’S A LOV E STO RY It’s probably no surprise that weddings aren’t what they used to be. Rigid traditions and rules have given way to personalized celebrations and a reinvention of customs, from the walk down the aisle to the first dance (see p. 46 to see what I mean). Something else that’s changed? Marriage, and how couples are approaching it. Today, “how we met” stories more than likely involve a dating app, while the path to “I do” can involve major life decisions like purchasing a home or having a baby. Couples are more often fusing two cultures, backgrounds or religions not only at their wedding, but in their marriage too. The diversity of it all is making the stories of today’s couples more beautiful and unique than ever—and we’re here for it (see our celebration of marriage in 2020 on p. 137). So, cheers to you—whoever you are and whatever your love story.

We’re Turning 20 This year marks the 20th anniversary of our first issue, originally called Wedding Gowns. Look how far we’ve come!

24

A week after dress designer and all-around cool girl Hayley Paige got engaged (that’s her fiancé, Conrad Louis, below!), she penned a heartfelt IG post about finding love after divorce. Her story and attitude are full of hope, grace and empowerment— and we felt it was important to give this moment the celebration it deserves. Don’t miss Hayley’s interview on p. 138.

The keys to taking your best wedding photos are __________. Truly being in the moment, having fun, collaborative communication with your photographer and a thoughtful, well-planned timeline. The biggest misses I see come from unspoken expectations and unrealistic schedules. I definitely don’t recommend trying to recreate a specific Pinterest pose because that usually just ends up being stressful for the couple. As an alternative, share what vibes you liked best about an image and let the photographer use their skills to interpret it in a way that fits who you are and the day’s flow. I love capturing joy and excitement, like that moment when a couple and their loved ones fully celebrated the couple’s union in their own way, whether it was a kiss, an exit, a cultural ceremony or some dance moves. @petronellaphotography

That just-bitten lip look you gave our model is amaze. How can someone re-create that style at home? Start the process by applying a primer or lip balm. Cover your lips using your foundation as a base. After applying that layer of coverage, grab any lipstick and, with your finger as a tool, tap that colorful pigment on like a stain. Next, use a brush to add extra color on the inside of the lip and blend it out with your fingers for an ombré effect. Tip: You can also use the lipstick as a blush, @hectorsimancas just tap it onto the cheeks with your finger or a sponge.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

LAUREN KAY EXECUTIVE EDITOR Which one of 2020’s wedding trends are you most excited about? New trends totally invigorate me—it’s so fun to think about what’s “next,” and this year’s list delivers! I’m especially loving the push toward sustainability and inclusivity. We’re seeing nods to this across all categories, from locally-sourced flowers to menus that check every box, whether that’s nut-free options or mocktails. I’m also so here for the twist on the traditional Viennese hour—cheese! The swap of sweets to savory meats and cheeses @laurenekay (i.e. an epic charcuterie board) makes my heart sing. Be sure to check out our full list of favorites at TheKnot.com.

TKM20SPR_FOB_Contribs.L [P].indd 26

Are there any up-and-coming destinations you’re excited about? I recently visited Miavana, the first real luxury property in Madagascar, and was blown away by how untouched the islands of the north are—it’s a whole different safari experience. The Azores islands off the coast of Portugal are such an easy escape for East Coasters. The East Cape of Baja, Mexico, is an undiscovered gem. And now that people know about Croatia, I think they’ll begin to discover the beauty of neighboring Montenegro. For domestic travelers, The Farm at Brush Creek Ranch will put Saratoga, Wyoming, on @jenrunsworld the map for foodies.

All your wedding plans at your fingertips, anytime.

WE’VE G O T YO U And You’ve Got This! Organizing all those details and a checklist? There’s an app for that. The Knot Wedding Planner pulls together your vision, pros and guests to put planning in the palm of your hand.

1

STYLE

FIND YOUR WEDDING We know—you’re probably wondering where you should even start (totally normal, btw). First, download our app and take our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe, (think: industrial with bohemian details). We’ll generate your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). EDITOR TIP Think about what you love as a couple—are you

2

ORGANIZED

KEEP Not sure what to do when? Look no further than our totally customizable checklist. If you’re asking your future brotherin-law to officiate, we’ll take “find an officiant” off your to-do list. Want to add extra entertainment? No problem. Bonus: our budgeter will help you track your overall spending. EDITOR TIP Psst, it’s okay to go out of order or to not tick off

every to-do. Really. It’s also totally okay to ask for assistance from your crew or your wedding VIPs—they want to help!

3

PROS

COMPILE YOUR After sharing your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad with recommended vendors. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got tons of award-winning pros (right where you are), plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. EDITOR TIP If you have your heart set on a master chef, a true

floral wizard or an epic cover band, book those pros first. Many in-demand vendors get scooped early, especially in high season. Don’t panic: If your first choice is already booked, ask them for a recommendation. Chances are they have an industry BFF who can also help bring your vision to life.

REGISTRY

MANAGE YOUR People will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so a registry is a must-have. Build yours on The Knot Registry and add items from anywhere you shop with our universal registry tool. That means you don’t have to choose between bespoke Etsy finds and smart home tech from Amazon. Plus, your guests get a one-stop shopping experience—a win-win.

DISCOVER WHAT YOU LOVE You’ll start by swiping right on images you love—these will be added to your final board (you can always add more). There’s also room to add personalized, must-haves (think: taco truck, dog-friendly venue or room for a sangeet).

EDITOR TIP The Knot Registry also lets you ask for money

for things like an epic trip to Bali or a down payment on a new home. Yes, you read that right: It’s okay to ask for cash.

DEFINE YOUR STYLE No couple is just one set style—instead, you’ll get a series of words that describe your vibe. Bonus: You can use this lingo when talking with your pros.

5

GUESTS

SHARE YOUR IDEAS

THINK OF YOUR A wedding website is clutch—for your guests and you. Fill your site with need-to-know info, like hotels and registries, then share it with your guest list. Your friends and family will be in the know, and you won’t be fielding “directions please” emails hours before you say “I do.” You can even stay on top of RSVPs with our handy built-in reply tool.

When you’re ready, send your inspo-packed vision board to your fam and the people bringing your day to life. Your series of images will help convey your idea of what a “romantic garden party” really looks like.

EDITOR TIP Choose from tons of free designs (coordinate

34

with your Minted wedding invites) and even snag a custom URL for an extra touch of personalization.

6

PERFECT YOUR COLOR PALETTE We’ll even suggest colors that match your wedding style. Not quite right? Change them up as you plan.

GET PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS

TIMELINE

GET YOUR DAY-OF Not sure when to start hair and makeup? We can help. As you check off to-dos (so satisfying, right?) our app creates a detailed day-of timeline so your day runs right on schedule. Share your personalized itinerary with your pros, wedding party and any VIPs. Everyone will know when it’s all going down, and you can focus on enjoying some bubbly and having the best time with your people.

We’ll take your quiz answers and match you with vendors based on your location, style and budget—starting with your venue.

SAY “I DO” WITH EASE We’ll send you helpful reminders along the way and create a day-of timeline to ensure smooth sailing.

EDITOR TIP A wedding is a bit like Thanksgiving dinner—

lots of elements that all need to come together at the same time. No harm in padding your day-of schedule a bit. #trust

PLANNED TO PERFECTION “Having a proud gay man and LGBTQ+ advocate plan the wedding event of the year really set the tone that marriage is for everyone and love is love,” event designer Jove Meyer says. He intentionally collaborated with pros who are people of color, women, queer or minorities to shine light on their talents.

FLOWER POWER DREAM IN COLOR A sparkling white and silver guest dress code allowed for a riot of color in the party’s design. From holographic invitations to watercolored cakes and brightly hued installations, bold shades were on display at every turn.

Floral installations in color-blocked hues doubled as décor and the perfect backdrop for photos. Columns added serious pops of color without sacrificing space.

EXTRA ENTERTAINMENT In addition to a high-energy band (the dance floor was packed!) a drag performance surprised and delighted guests. “It really set the tone to shine bright as you are,” Meyer said.

SUSTAINABILITY FTW Hanging installations made from salvaged T-shirt material were a hit with partygoers, as were holographic reusable straws—both nods to eco-consciousness.

SPECIALTY SIPS Pour-over drinks and interactive cocktail stations wowed, while comfort food (think: grilled cheese and ramen cups) kept everyone satiated.

ASK THE KNOT SQUAD You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers. We tapped our team—and one of our go-to industry pros—to solve some of your most of-the-moment planning asks. OUR TAKE I really want a modern, fun invitation suite, but my fiancé is feeling something a bit more classic with calligraphy. Any design tips for picking invites that suit both of our styles? SARAH EVANS

Private vows allow you to express yourself without an audience.

40

My partner and I are both major introverts— we don’t do PDA and hate being the center of attention—so a traditional ceremony seems really scary to us. Are there ways for us to rethink the structure to fit our personalities?

PRO TAKE

JOVE MEYER Owner Jove Meyer Events Jove is an NYC-based event designer known for throwing celebrations that take personalization to new heights. Check out Jove’s work at The Knot Gala on p. 36.

Your wedding ceremony should be true to both of you—that includes reflecting your style, love story and personalities. If you’re both introverts, you could consider a city hall ceremony. This allows you to bring a few friends, keeping things intimate and casual. But, if you go with a city hall wedding, a majority of your loved ones will miss out on your public commitment. As an alternative, rethink the day in a way that pulls the attention away from you. Maybe you could skip walking down a traditional aisle and instead hang out with your guests preceremony. Think: no processing, just getting married where you are, on your terms. You could also walk down the aisle with your partner or ask guests to process to you instead, meeting you, your partner and the officiant at the altar. Starting the ceremony together might make you more comfortable. In the end, the goal of the wedding ceremony is to make your commitment of love in front of those you care about most. This can really take place in whatever form feels most authentic to your relationship.

Marriage is all about collaboration and figuring out how to blend two individual styles. Here’s the good news: When it comes to stationery design, seemingly opposing tastes can actually complement each other nicely and really represent you as a couple. If your fiancé is nonnegotiable on calligraphy, try pairing hand lettering with clean, modern typefaces for a combo that won’t feel too stuffy. Give your suite an energetic vibe by experimenting with color and avoiding any fussy details that might not feel true to your combined style. Letting the script shine as the focal point can feel clean and bold but simple and timeless at the same time. Win, win! We’re trying to settle on a first dance song but the classics feel too serious for us. Where can we find some jams to start the party? S H A R LY N P I E R R E Assistant Editor, Research

Check out different radio stations or comb through Spotify, but keep this in mind: As you’re researching, don’t be afraid to explore different genres you might not always find yourself listening to. Try pop, hip-hop or even Afrobeats. If nothing makes you want to strut and shake something, enlist the help of your wedding party and ask for song recs or even a playlist—they’ll know what feels most like you guys.

GENDER-FREE LOVE Consultant AINSLEY BLATTEL works to make sure all couples, including non-binary folks, are their truest selves on their day. THE FLOWERS “Flowers are for everyone,” Blattel says. Want to carry a bouquet? Go for it. Looking to rock a floral necklace? Do it. THE ENTRANCES If the idea of one of you processing down the aisle toward the other doesn’t feel right, why not walk hand-in-hand instead? “Consider it a celebration of what’s already been.” THE KISS One easy way to keep a ceremony from feeling gendered? Switch up your lingo. Instead of saying, ‘You may now kiss the bride,’ Blattel suggests something like, ‘You may now seal your vows with a kiss.’

Your wedding and the events surrounding it call for pictureperfect hair. A conditioning treatment can tame frizz and flyaways but won’t take away from your natural texture.

You’ll be flashing those pearly whites a lot on your day— consider whitening treatments for a more dazzling smile.

Laser teeth whitening is the quickest, most effective option. LASHES Long, full lashes can make your eyes look bigger and brighter.

FOR YOUR

If you aren’t going au naturale, consider these options.

Eyelash extensions are the perfect solution if you want realistic-looking lashes. These synthetic strands of hair are bonded to your natural lashes by a professional. A full set lasts up to six weeks, but we recommend making an appointment three or four days before your wedding in case you want to make any final tweaks. From $150 GO PRO

GO HOME You can achieve the same effect as eyelash extensions with falsies (we love the ones by Lashify). Opt for individuals over strips for a more subtle look. From $20

SKIN

The key to flawless wedding makeup is a flawless canvas. Give your complexion a complete refresh with a chemical peel.

There’s no shortage of peels out there, but we recommend the SkinCeuticals Smart TCA System. This combo of glycolic acid and trichloroacetic acid stimulates collagen and solves a myriad of skin issues like fine lines and discoloration. Schedule it a month before your day so your skin has time to bounce back. From $200

GO PRO

Use an at-home treatment like Dr. Dennis Gross Clinical Grade Resurfacing Liquid Peel twice a week leading up to your wedding for overall smoother, brighter skin and refined pores. The results probably won’t be as dramatic as a professional peel, but it’s a less pricey alternative with no downtime. From $95 GO HOME

FOR YOUR

NAILS

Get your hands #ringselfie ready with a glossy, long-lasting mani that won’t fade, chip or peel.

GO PRO Somewhere between a regular polish and acrylic nails, dip powder manicures are taking over social media for two big reasons: They last for three to four weeks (at least a full week longer than classic gel) and use pigmented powder rather than more harmful UV rays to seal in the polish. From $30

An at-home kit is the secret to a lasting gel manicure that won’t break the bank. Go all out and purchase your own LED lamp plus nail prep, base coat, top coat and gel polish color, or try a two-step gel dupe like Essie Gel Couture that doesn’t require a base coat or LED. From $9

STOCKSY

GO HOME If you don’t want to splurge on sprucing up your strands, try the in-store version, Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3. This less intense formula contains a small amount of the active ingredient along with conditioning agents, but it will help your hair feel softer and more hydrated. From $28

Plan to ramp up your skin care regimen a few months before your nuptials.

If there was ever a recipe for instant happiness, it probably looked a lot like this color combo. Pair bright, saturated citrus hues with memorable details (hello, custom-branded cocktails!) for a celebratory spring affair you and your guests will love. Color takes center stage with this look, so keep the extras to a minimum—think: modern stationery, streamlined tabletops and lots of bold blooms to complete the zesty vibe.

THREE WAYS T O ADD CITRUS Work in the real deal fruit for a party that’s as delicious as it is delightful.

YO U R M E N U Yes, citrus can be savory! Ask your catering team to pair the versatile fruit with things like salad, fresh fish and more.

SWEET SLICE Carry the citrus motif throughout your day, like with illustrations reminiscent of dried fruit slices on your cake’s exterior.

For a wow-worthy final course, opt for a citrus sweet. We love the idea of cake with blood orange filling or lemon paired with raspberry.

YO U R F L O R A L S Kumquats, mandarins and lemons can all add texture to your arrangements.

B U B B LY B A C K D R O P Rethink paper lanterns as a colorful backdrop to your head table, photo booth or even ceremony scene.

When you need them most, friends step into new roles.

Angela (left) and Brittany said “I do” at their favorite park in their home of Cincinnati.

A C H O S E N F A M I LY Without her parents’ support, Angela Ianniello’s wedding to Brittany Green became a love letter to their community. 84

AS TOLD TO LOUIS BARAGONA

W

PHOTOGRAPHY BY HUNTER & LIGHT PHOTO CO

hen I came out to my parents 10 years ago, they weren’t supportive or open to my sexuality. Ever since then, ours has been an on-again, off-again relationship, one that I call “estranged” simply because that’s the easiest way to define it. From the beginning of our time together as a couple, I’ve been honest with Brittany about the nature of my relationship with my parents. Though these sorts of strains can be kind of taboo (and the thought of being judged for strained relationships is scary), it’s not entirely a shock for those of us in the LGBTQ+ community, and it’s important to be open with those you love. I knew when I got engaged to Brittany that my family wouldn’t be there for me, and, even more so, I didn’t want to welcome their thoughts—or lack thereof—into a time of such celebration. Instead, I gave my

TKM20SPR_STYPLAN_Essay.L [P].indd 84

parents a heads-up that Brittany and I would be getting married, and, from there, I cut back on communication with them. I know some people say “maybe they’ll come around” or “in time things will change”—and though that hope wasn’t completely gone as I planned my wedding, I remained even more focused on the excitement of creating a new family and starting a new chapter, reconciling my grief with hope. One of my greatest planning strategies was giving myself the space to feel my feelings instead of pushing them aside. We had a long engagement, and I took things day by day, which allowed me to take care of myself as needed. I’d been to therapy before we’d gotten engaged, and I knew I had a therapist on call, should I have needed one. I looked to the internet for support from other people in my shoes or similar places—maybe

due to unsupportive in-laws or religious differences—and they showed me I wasn’t the only one going through this. Most importantly, though, I remained honest with my friends, and they in-turn became family. When you need them most, friends step into new roles, and a wedding becomes a community effort. I never had to shoulder the burden of planning alone. When I told myself, Oh, I don’t need a bridal shower—that’s something traditionally thrown by the family, my friends threw one for me. Whether it was helping to create our family manifesto or baking our wedding cake, my friends did things I would have never even asked of them. And when they weren’t doing that, they were simply showing up for us both, all because I’d been open and honest. I allowed my friends the opportunity to step up, and they did—as not only a community, but my chosen family.

EARTH LOVE Sustainable weddings are on the rise, and we’re here for it. Consider “upcycling” your wedding by committing to zero waste or a reduced carbon footprint. A lighter version includes resetting a family stone, sourcing locally grown food or hiring vendors who also prioritize sustainability.

Looking for something totally fresh that will take your celebration to the next level? We’ve got you. Here are our favorite of-the-moment ideas. B Y L A U R E N

Go for the wow! Instead of stretching your décor budget to include all. the. things, narrow in on one or two true heart-stoppers, like hanging florals, a neon installation that doubles as a ceremony altar or unique rentals. Your guests will be sure to remember this standout detail, especially if it’s so “you guys.”

FLORAL REMIX

Unexpected and totally on trend!

TKM20SPR_STYPLAN_StyleA.L [P].indd 86

Greenery is still hip, but this year it’s getting a colorful makeover. Spray-painted branches, greens and grasses are adding texture and unnatural color—think: neon, frosted pastels and metallics—to arrangements and bouquets (knuckle posy, anyone?). Dip-dyed petals are also a fun way to add an unexpected dose of color into the mix. Looking for a low cost, big impact floral moment? Two words: color blocking.

TRENDING COLORS We recommend settling on your vibe first (for help, take our Style Quiz on The Knot Wedding Planner app), and then find a way to add a pop to your party. Lucky for you, color is trending in 2020. Expect to see a lot of neo mint, a.k.a. the new millennial pink; cassis, not quite pink, not quite purple; yellow, a mellow, rich hue with earthy undertones; and faded denim, a blue that’s equally fresh and serene.

MICRO WEDDINGS

Good lighting gets your details noticed and doubles as décor.

This trend is designed to keep things small—think: 40 people or less. But like any exclusive party, this celebration delivers big. The cost per guest is higher, meaning people are treated to bespoke touches, elaborate meals (read: tasting menu) and tons of personalization.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: LAFFLER PHOTOGRAPHY; JENNY FU STUDIO; MADISON INOUYE/PEXELS; JESSA SCHIFILLITI; KAREN OBRIST PHOTOGRAPHY; TWO17 PHOTO & CINEMA; ERIN L. TAYLOR PHOTOGRAPHY; KELLEY RAYE PHOTOGRAPHY; SHUTTERSTOCK; JUSTINA LOUISE PHOTOGRAPHY; OUR LOVE IS LOUD

SELF-SERVE SIPS We’re not talking a cooler full of cold ones. This wedding trend dresses up the actual serving of a signature sip. An artfully created wall-mounted dispenser, a trickedout bar of pour-over drinks or a slew of specialty garnishes allows guests to create their perfect cocktail. Bonus: You’ll need one less bartender to pull it off.

BARRETTES + COMBS

EDIBLE BLOOMS Whether frozen in ice cubes, tossed in salads or sprinkled on top of dessert, edible flowers are on point. This pretty #extra is perfect for floral-loving duos and an easy way to elevate virtually anything from infused water to classic vanilla cake. Pair the petals with even more stems for an über-romantic party.

Veils aren’t going anywhere, but tiaras have given way to the latest in hair jewelry— barrettes and combs. These accessories are often adorned in pearls, rhinestones and colorful enamels. They’re great for holding back natural curls or creating a second style for your wedding reception.

The Old Town of Cartagena is a UNESCO world heritage site and a beautiful blend of old and new (think: a less-crowded New Orleans). Post up at Casa San Agustín (from $490; HotelCasaSanAgustin.com), a luxury boutique hotel with a swanky spa and private beach access. Take in the SpanishColonial architecture and brightly colored facades of the city center, experience live Afro-Colombian performances in San Basilio de Palenque and nosh on authentic Spanish cuisine (Cartagena is known as the culinary capital of Colombia). When you’ve soaked up enough culture, escape the mainland for the always-sunny Rosario Islands, 27 islets of white-sand beaches and turquoise waters just off the coast. Isla Grande, the largest of the islands, is home to Laguna Encantada, a lagoon that gets its glow from bioluminescent plankton. Looking for a more secluded experience? Head to Isla Fuerte to hike tropical forests and explore caves said to house buried treasures.

Sweden Known for its chilly temps and storybookworthy architecture, this ultra-friendly Scandinavian nation is not only one of the happiest countries in the world (seriously), but also one of the most inclusive. The quaint city of Gothenburg’s lively West Pride festival kicks off the country’s sunny summer of rainbow celebrations. WHY NOW After a successful stint as the host of EuroPride in 2018, Gothenburg has taken on new life, earning the title of “the world’s most forward-thinking city”—and not just in terms of queer acceptance. The country has also embraced sustainability in innovative ways, a plus for eco-conscious adventurers. WHAT TO DO When you need a break from parade floats and drinks at GRETAS, embrace your inner thrill seeker and hit the rides at Liseberg or catch some Zs at Hotel Bellora. If you’ve got time, head to Stockholm for a dip in the Baltic Sea.

This tiny island off the coast of Italy has a reputation as an inviting destination for couples of every kind. Why? Malta’s government is known for setting the historic standard when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights. In terms of Malta’s style, think: the Mediterranean vibes of the Italian coast, but with a breezy, tropical twist. WHY NOW This hidden gem has gained traction with influencers in recent years, in part due to a string of proLGBTQ+ legislation. Luckily, the photo-ready appeal of Malta hasn’t yet infiltrated the masses, meaning the country’s landmarks still feel a bit under the radar. WHAT TO DO History buffs will love getting lost in the streets of Mdina, (which is otherwise known as the silent city), while photo-hungry travelers will enjoy snapping pics on the colorful Umbrella Street in Zabbar. You probably won’t mind the island’s 300 days of sunshine a year, especially if you stay at chic and homey Casa Ellul, which sits on the seaside of Valletta.

Read the US Department of State’s online guide written for LGBTI travelers, detailing things to keep in mind when venturing abroad. GET TOURISTY

The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association’s list of inclusive touring companies and guides can help determine the details of your stay, from the destination itself to your stops along the way. CHECK REVIEWS

TRAVEL TIPS BE INFORMED

Companies like misterb&b allow LGBTQ+ or allied hosts to extend their places to guests, meaning you’ll know you have support wherever you stay.

@montevideoim

Uruguay Beach lovers will revel in the sun and sand of this South American country, one of the first Latin American countries to legalize samesex marriage. Though explorers will come for the whale watching and ocean activities, they’ll stay purely for the post-playa Capeletis a la caruso and Medio y Medio, aka the famed pasta and drymeets-sweet wine cocktail. WHY NOW The destination was recently named one of the best countries to travel to in 2020. Not only does it boast progressive political policies, but Uruguay is also rich with diverse cultural offerings, including historical sites, a fun nightlife scene and low-key beaches for daytime naps. WHAT TO DO Escape the city and venture to the whimsical, whitewashed Casapueblo in Punta Ballena for a little art. Once you’re ready to party, hit Il Tempo in Montevideo for a drag show, then get cozy at the Puerto Mercado Hotel.

FAMILY TIES Gabrielle and Will’s flower girls preceded the couple down the aisle. LA CIUDAD The pink spires of San Miguel’s famed church and the colors of the city served as inspiration for the day’s palette. BOUQUET Gabrielle carried a bright mix of roses, lisianthus and other locally grown flowers. FINISHING TOUCH The groomsmen topped their tuxes with tenango-embroidery bow ties. LONE STAR One of Will’s buds also snapped on Texan suspenders. “We are not lacking in state pride,” Gabrielle says. ESCORT CARDS Gabrielle’s mom got thrifty when picking tassels for each guest. “She headed down to Oaxaca and just bought it all,” Gabrielle says. STATIONERY Gabrielle re-created San Miguel’s skyline in a watercolor illustration on the main invites.

abrielle Green (29 and a teacher and graphic designer) and William “Will” Bivins (29 and a rancher and realtor) have made plenty of memories together, starting at age five. “We met on our first day of kindergarten,” Gabrielle says. “We’ve been friends all our lives.” Once that friendship turned into a relationship, Gabrielle introduced Will to a spot her family has loved for generations. “My mom grew up spending summers in San Miguel with her mother for art school,” Gabrielle says. “San Miguel has now become Will’s and my place. It’s where we fell in love.” That connection is why the pair invited loved ones to celebrate in the colorful city, infusing Mexican culture into the day’s details, from the trees of life on the tables to the local favors. “There was meaning at every turn,” Gabrielle says. — LO U I S BAR AGO NA

STARRY NIGHT Mexican-style tin pendants lit up the tented reception alongside hanging greenery. “We wanted that San Miguel feeling from the beginning,” Gabrielle says. CAKE Gabrielle and Will cut into a red velvet cake with a layer of hibiscus frosting. “We didn’t originally want a cake—but then we tasted it,” Gabrielle says. SPARKS Fireworks surprised guests and kicked off the party. “I believe fireworks should be at every event,” Gabrielle says. CENTERPIECES Taper candles, tuberoses and anthurium in vibrant shades of orange and pink added a colorful note to the tables alongside watercolor numbers. “I love to paint, so it was one of my favorite details,” Gabrielle says. FOOD Guests snacked on carpaccio and watermelon skewers as they sipped margaritas.

#MAKETRADITION It was only natural for Will to propose in San Miguel. “We’ve traveled there every year since we’d started dating,” Gabrielle says. “It became a tradition for us to take our friends to San Miguel in the summer.” After Will popped the question, the couple noticed a crowd forming. “Everyone started yelling, ‘Besos, besos, besos,’ ” Gabrielle says. “When we finally kissed, everyone cheered.”

MUSIC A violinist serenaded guests at Jay and JJ’s lakeside vows. CEREMONY JJ’s mom, a public speaker, served as the officiant. “My mom has always been my biggest ally,” JJ says. FAMILY FIRST Jay’s mom also played a role in the day. “After I came out, it rocked my family,” Jay says. “To get to the point of supporting us and my mom walking me down the aisle was huge.” PLACE SETTINGS The couple kept their tablescapes neutral, intentionally saving the pops of color for the napkins. “Blush was the boldest color we did,” JJ says. WEDDING PARTY JJ’s ladies wore shades of ivory, while Jay’s side stayed sleek in black. CAKE Guests ate slices of an Italian-style, semi-naked cake filled with layers of chocolate, vanilla and hazelnut. BOUQUET JJ carried a mix of white blooms for his walk down the aisle.

ustin “Jay” Clark (31 and a head of IT) and Jeffrey-John “JJ” Leaf’s (22 and a writer and entrepreneur) love has taken them all over the world, but the journey began at an unexpected spot: a PetSmart in Dallas. “We caught each other’s eyes and felt a connection, but the timing was bad,” Jay says. “JJ was moving to LA, so we decided to stay friends.” Once JJ moved, they were pen pals—until Jay scored a job in LA. After a Parisian proposal, Jay and JJ decided on intimate Lake Como vows. “JJ is Italian and had been there years earlier,” Jay says. The couple welcomed 24 guests to Varenna, and later surprised West Coast loved ones with their wedding video at an LA reception. “As an immigrant and a traveler, it’s been difficult to gain a sense of home,” JJ said in his vows. “Not anymore. My darling Jay, home is in your arms.” — LB

VENUE VIBE Back in Los Angeles, Jay and JJ wanted a space that allowed a blank slate for their post-vow getdown. The couple filled the warehouse with eclectic décor, like colorful couches and Turkish rugs. “We wanted it to feel like a party,” Jay says. “It had a sort of jungle-meets-mid-century-modern theme.” LIT A neon sign highlighted the pair’s sweet spread of cake, macarons and more. DIY ILYS Loved ones got creative at a craft station, where they decorated the newlyweds’ Polaroid guest book. SECOND LOOKS Jay and JJ went casual for their Los Angeles bash, picking all-white, relaxed linen suits. The pair asked guests to rock white as well. CENTERPIECES In keeping with the party’s vintage theme, bunny tails, orange anthurium and monstera leaves topped the tables in retro vases.

#MAKETRADITION JJ put his passion for words to good use by writing personalized quotes on the back of guests’ place cards at dinner. “Each quote represented that particular guest and the relationship Jay and I have with them,” JJ says. The cards, which included lines from Back to the Future and words by Oprah, added a slightly more playful note to the day’s otherwise formal paper and décor.

s the co-owner of a floral studio, Bailey Wilson (30) has marked much of her life in weddings. In fact, a wedding is what brought her and Chris Stroh (30 and an account manager) together. “We’d gone on a couple dates before, but it didn’t work out,” Bailey says. “We reconnected when mutual friends asked us to be in their wedding.” Two years later, Chris proposed, kick-starting the process of planning their own celebration. For the diehard Clevelanders, tying the knot in their fave city was a no-brainer. “We chose The Madison because it was a blank canvas that I could make my own,” Bailey says. She used her skills to ensure the day felt uniquely personal, from local flowers and music by the Cleveland Keys to loaves of bread on the tables. Because, as Bailey says, “Who doesn’t love carbs?” — LB

CAKE The couple’s dessert included layers of lemon with vanilla bean and lavender with marshmallow creme. PUPPY LOVE Bailey and Chris loved their stationery so much that they echoed the puppy pattern on their ceremony backdrop, framing it with pink candles and dahlias. TABLE NUMBERS Himalayan salt blocks guided guests at dinner. NEW HEIGHTS Bailey and Chris swung from the rafters at the party— literally. “The swings were one of our best ideas,” Bailey says. SIGNATURE DRINKS Bailey sipped a fishbowl cocktail (shark included) while Chris picked Stroh’s beer, a nod to his last name. FRESH SLICE Guests grabbed wood-fired pies from a pizza truck.

anielle Porter (31 and a fashion marketer) and Justin Chin (27 and a business analyst) found wedding décor inspo in a place far from their East Coast home. “We love traveling to Waimea,” Danielle says. “From all the greenery to the white birds, Hawaii is just so beautiful.” With a tropical escape on the mind, the couple planned a beachside wedding in Miami. “We couldn’t go to Hawaii, so we decided it was easier to bring Hawaii to Miami than our hometown of New York,” Danielle says. After two years of planning from afar (and adding a daughter to their family), the pair welcomed guests to Florida—but lush palm leaves, sunshineworthy gold accents and sandy-white space took everyone to the islands. “Seeing our vision come to life after so much planning was a surreal moment,” Danielle says. — LB

Q+A

HAYLEY EVER AFTER Q:

Hayley Paige sits crooked and talks straight about finding love after divorce, planning a wedding for the second time and why she’s passionate about sharing her story.

Q:

WHAT’S YOUR OUTLOOK ON SECOND WEDDINGS IN GENERAL? I’m such an advocate for love and marriage in all capacities and for everyone. And that’s the beginning and end of it in my mind, because when anyone is blessed with love in their life, I think it should be celebrated in any way that they see fit. There is no such thing as a “second” wedding—it’s a wedding.

DO YOU THINK THERE’S A STIGMA ASSOCIATED WITH THEM?

Yeah, but you don’t have to feed into it. I’ll even admit to the fact that growing up, I never intended to get divorced. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. But it’s about moving forward with grace so that you’re ready to accept love when it happens again. And it will happen again. I love spreading that message. You don’t get just one shot at finding true love.

Q:

DO YOU THINK THE RULES CHANGE WHEN GETTING MARRIED FOR A SECOND TIME?

Love should be celebrated. You’re never too old or too broken or too whatever to experience a fairy tale— everyone is deserving of love. It shouldn’t be something that can be defined by anyone else. The celebration of your love story is something only you should dictate. It shows an incredible sense of bravery to celebrate love after experiencing a loss, and if you’re open, wonderful things can happen.

Q:

WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU TO SHARE YOUR STORY ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

My first wedding was so public, it was even on Say Yes to The Dress. I felt I had

Q:

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR FIANCÉ?

There’s likely going to be an element of Southwestern chic since he’s from Austin and I’m from the West Coast. We also want to use Mother Nature as a backdrop. I also don’t think we’re going to be as beholden to the structure of a traditional wedding. We want something that feels experiential with a sustainable approach.

Q:

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO SOMEONE PLANNING A SECOND WEDDING?

Be unapologetically optimistic, because your mind-set is everything. You want to go into it feeling like it’s an entirely new chapter. It’s just a wedding—and it’s your wedding. It doesn’t have to be labeled a second, or a third or whatever. It’s an amazing moment. You go and have yourself a fairy tale.

Serendipity. The word itself just means the happenstance of something wonderful that comes out of nowhere. a responsibility to share my story. It’s easy to get into the habit of showing only your highlight reel on social media—there’s a pressure to always post the best version of yourself. I felt it was important to be vulnerable because that’s how you break down barriers and connect with real brides and people. My first marriage didn’t work out the way I planned, but that didn’t have to hold me back from hoping that my fairy tale was out there. I learned the most powerful thing I could do was move forward with my life, exist in the present and get excited about the future. If I’d been unwilling to get excited about Conrad when I first met him because I was still tethered to my past, I would have missed out on the love of my life.

DO YOU? ME TOO. A proposal traditionally kicks off your wedding planning journey. But who’s to say it has to follow tradition?

THE PLAYFUL PAIR DIANE NGUYEN + JJ COLLAZO

Adi and Autumn, who met in college, approached the topic of marriage sort of like they approached wedding planning— as a very chill team. “We had been talking about marriage for a while but wanted to be stable in our jobs first,” Autumn says. “One day, about four years into our relationship, we were just sitting on the couch watching TV. I turned to Adi and asked, ‘Are you ready to get married?’ and he was just like, ‘Let’s do it!’ From there, we just set a date and got to planning!”

For Diane and JJ, a recent New Year’s Eve (their 12th celebrating together!) brought more than just a midnight kiss. “We have this tradition of ending the night by swooping up one of the best bottles of liquor at the closest bodega and grabbing a cheap bite,” Diane says. “At 2 a.m., as JJ was biting into his chicken sandwich, I pulled out the lollipop that came free with my sandwich, got down on one knee and popped the question. At the time, I think it was a joke. Now, it’s actually our story.”

It was important for Malory and Katie to both have a hand in designing their forever jewelry. “We didn’t want anything too flashy,” they say. “We wanted rings that felt like ‘us’ since we would be wearing them every day. Plus, we’re New Yorkers, so they had to be black.” Alongside Brooklyn jeweler Wwake, the pair designed black diamond rings, then took turns proposing on the anniversary of their first date. “It made sense—we do everything together and were too excited not to share in this experience.”

DO GOOD

FOR BETTER Throwing a wedding has become a force of activism all its own. Here’s how to harness your tobe-wed power.

f 142

CHOOSE A VENUE WITH HISTORY One of the first decisions you’ll make when it comes to planning your wedding is, well, where to have it. And with so many options out there, it might be hard to narrow in on a space that feels like you and supports a cause or outlook you believe in. To start your search, focus on venues with a rich history. This can be anything from a bar with a reputation of supporting the LGBTQ+ community to a town hall rich with meaning from the HARNESS abolitionist movement or THE SOCIAL FOOTPRINT a gallery that supports OF YOUR female artists. Booking a WEDDING (AND venue with this type of THE SPENDING history is a great way to POWER) IN say, “This matters to us.” A WAY T H AT Bonus points if part of WILL MAKE your fee goes toward the YOU PROUD. work they continue to do.

18% TKM20SPR_STYPLAN_StyleB.L [P].indd 142

SUPPORT LOCAL INDUSTRY We’re certainly not the first ones to tell you to shop local—but that doesn’t make the sentiment any less valuable. You’ll be doing a lot of purchasing throughout your wedding planning journey, so look at each box on your to-do list as a chance to speak with your money. When possible, opt to hire or shop within the community where you live or are holding your wedding. Not only will you be supporting local industry in your area, but it’s also a sneaky way to save money. You’ll escape the big-box retailer markup and are more likely to buy in-season, which, in the case of things like food or flowers, can mean big savings.

HIRE A LIKE-MINDED TEAM You and your partner may be committed to doing good throughout your wedding planning process, but it helps if your vendor team has the same outlook as well. More and more, we’re seeing couples compile a team of like-minded individuals whose work they love and whose outlook they

agree with. Whether that means hiring a culturally diverse team of photographers, stationers, florists and caterers, or knowing that each of your vendors volunteers in their off time for those less fortunate, enlisting a crew of pros with the same “do better” mind-set that you have will make your planning process easier—and may even open your eyes to new opportunities to give back along the way.

or many, 2020 will be the year of conscious consumerism. “Voting” with your money is a real thing, and more and more people are spending, shopping and hiring in a mindful manner that aligns with their overall belief system. So how can you harness the social footprint of your wedding (and, let’s be honest, all that spending power) in a way that will make you proud decades from now? Read on—we’ve got just the tips.

GIVE BACK POST-‘I DO’ There are many ways to finish your wedding planning journey with a few simple acts of kindness. Some of our favorites? In lieu of favors, make a donation to a preferred charity or foundation in honor of your guests. Or, enlist a company like Repeat Roses, who will repurpose your day’s blooms into smaller arrangements and redistribute them to local hospitals or retirement communities for a bit of extra cheer. Other easy options, like donating your wedding attire or composting your dinner scraps, can make a big difference in the long run.

Kerry Sullivan Smith “always felt a stronger connection to the name Kerry than to Allison,” her legal first name. Her parents chose the middle name to honor their ancestors’ roots to County Kerry in Ireland. When she got married to Dennis, Kerry legally dropped Allison, and took her maiden name of Sullivan as her new middle name. The final step: taking on her husband’s last name, Smith. “I see taking Dennis’s last name as the opportunity for us to build our new family together.”

When Ben Clos and Jared Nyhart talked about what to do with their last names, Ben admits he initially expected Jared to take his name. After all, Ben felt a strong responsibility to “carry on a family name and create a legacy” as the only son. The pair ultimately decided to keep their respective names, but with a caveat: They plan to give their future kids Ben’s surname. “There are lots of things we still do because that’s the way we’ve always done them, but new traditions can be made,” Ben says.

Jasmine Vasquez and Layne Brace contemplated hyphenating their names when they got married, but found the two just didn’t click when put together. Thus, they merged the two to form a totally new last name, Braquez. “My husband and I come from homes of single moms, so our last names had a lot of significance and worth attached to them,” Jasmine says. “I think our new last name helps both of us keep a sense of where we came from and who we were before marriage.”

Empire A dress for the Grecian goddess in us all, the empire style has a fitted bodice ending just below the bust, giving a high-waisted appearance that lengthens the body.

MUST-READ GOWN SHOPPING TIP S S H O P E A R L Y A designer wedding gown will take months to create and a series of alterations to fit your body perfectly. In other words, it’s not the kind of garment you can toss into an online shopping cart and have show up on your doorstep two days later. Book your first appointment 9 to 12 months before your wedding date. If you’re shopping closer to your wedding, you may be limited to samples or off-the-rack gowns. A L W A Y S B O O K A N A P P O I N T M E N T Scheduling an appointment is the only way to ensure you’ll get a full hour of undivided attention. If you’re the type who hates feeling rushed when shopping, make an appointment on a slow weekday morning or afternoon. L I M I T Y O U R E N T O U R A G E Bringing a big group to the salon is a gown shopping don’t. Enlist one or two of your closest friends or family members to help you start your search. This way you can find the gown that best suits your style and not feel pressured by too many opinions.

H I D D E N C O S T S A D D U P Remember, your wedding gown budget doesn’t just include the dress. Your veil or headpiece, accessories, undergarments and alterations will also add to your bottom line. Factor in these costs before you give the salesperson your shopping budget. T R U S T I S K E Y Even if a gown doesn’t look amazing on the hanger, that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t look amazing on you. Be open to what an experienced consultant thinks will work for your body (after all, they’ve done this before). Bottom line: The dress you end up loving might be different than what you originally pictured, and that’s okay. S A L O N S C A N S O M E T I M E S T A K E R E Q U E S T S Just because a bridal salon carries your favorite designer, doesn’t mean it’ll have the exact wedding dress you’ve been wanting to try on. But, if you phone in advance and ask about a specific style, your consultant may be able to request a loaner sample of that gown especially for you.

4 The Antiguan climate is one of the most idyllic in all of the Caribbean, thanks to constant sea breezes and trade winds. The hot season runs from May to November.

Don’t leave without spending Sunday afternoon at Shirley Heights Lookout, a restaurant perched on a bluff on the south side of the island. You’ll get a stunning panoramic view of English Harbour and the island of Montserrat, not to mention some lip-smacking barbecue. 5

3 The biggest eyefuls of coral are off Andros (home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, with 140 miles of coral and cathedral-like caves), Bimini (where you can also find dolphins and sea turtles), Eleuthera/Harbour Island and the Exuma Islands.

Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 4

5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. Take diving lessons or browse duty-free bounty at the International Bazaar or the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport.

Looking for excitement? Don’t miss Junkanoo, a Bahamian costume parade in which people dance to copper cowbells, goombay drums and whistles. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 6

7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera.

Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 9

10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane ride from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike.

BARBADOS 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84 and 88 degrees.

The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.

2 Shorts, T-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.

7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

3 You’ll need a guide to enter the island’s restricted rainforest region, so sign up for a tour to walk through the dense foliage and swim in one of the tropical waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.

6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast.

Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 7

8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’tmiss Creole restaurant.

If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.

Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Streetside music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.

5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.

10 If you or your partner loves jazz music, plan your trip around the three-day St. Lucia Jazz Festival, held every May.

Bob Marley’s birthplace, Kingston, is perfect for honeymooners seeking their reggae roots or even just a starting point for spa trips and hikes in the beautiful Blue Mountains. 3

Many popular Jamaican destinations are between one and two hours from the Montego Bay airport by car. Make sure you bring Dramamine if you’re at risk for motion sickness, as taxi drivers take the curvy roads at quite a clip.

To see Jamaica at its best, go during Carnival, the highlight of the Jamaican year, in Kingston, Ocho Rios and MoBay each April and in Negril each May. 6

7 Reggae lovers should wait until July for the Reggae Sumfest, held in MoBay.

While shopping in Montego Bay, be polite and don’t hesitate to haggle. Sellers are insistent. 8

9 Coconut water—sold as “ice cold jelly” at roadside stands—and conch soup are said to heighten amour.

Take our word that in Negril, dirty dancing is the norm, so don’t be afraid to whip out some moves that have never seen the light of day! 10
