The Education People Show 2023 We are delighted that our free-to-attend annual show, The Education People Show, will be returning this year on Wednesday 8 November. The Education People Show is the South-East’s leading event for learning, teaching and effective management, featuring a high-level conference, inspirational workshops and a comprehensive exhibition of leading suppliers of services for early years settings, schools and academies. It brings together hundreds of education leaders from across Kent and neighbouring counties – to share best practice and new ideas on managing and developing education in the region. We are very excited to be welcoming our keynote speakers Sir Ian Bauckham CBE and Rav Wilding.

Sir Ian Bauckham has worked in education since graduating. He has led MFL departments, run a sixth form, and was the headteacher of a large comprehensive school rated as outstanding by Ofsted in 2012. He is currently CEO of Tenax Schools Trust which runs two Teaching School Hubs and trains teachers as a SCITT. Sir Ian has a vantage point in the education system which gives insight into accountability, exams, professional development and inspection, amongst others. In his opening keynote entitled Looking Down the Line: Challenges and Opportunities Ahead for Schools he will share those insights with us as we turn our eyes to the future and help us prioritise our plans. Rav Wilding, a TV presenter, former soldier and detective, will be sharing with us his strategies for overcoming everyday hurdles. In his closing keynote An Uphill Climb, Rav will explain that his success hasn’t been without challenges. Recently diagnosed with autism and growing up with dyslexia and dyspraxia, Rav will talk about his struggles and how each day is an uphill climb, sharing strategies he has learnt in life to overcome everyday hurdles.

Alongside our keynote speakers our full and inspiring programme of workshops will run throughout the day. • Precious Resources: Using Existing Systems to Support Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing. • Safer Recruitment: Must Do, Should Do and Best Practice. • Identifying and Supporting Young Carers. • Settling and Supporting Refugee Children. • Third-party Harassment – Another Issue for the Education Sector? • Exploring the Future for Business Leadership. • Building Language Skills to Support Behaviour in Class. • How Ofsted Inspects and Evaluates the Provision for Pupils with SEND. • Addressing the Real-life Impact of Children's Online Usage. • Diving Deeper into Primary Science.

Education Safeguarding Service From 1 April 2023 the Education Safeguarding Service returned to Kent County Council. The team are continuing to offer the same services and support and will be collaborating closely with The Education People.

Keeping Children Safe in Education The Department for Education (DfE) has published an updated version of the statutory safeguarding and child protection guidance for schools in England, ‘Keeping children safe in education’ (KCSIE). This guidance replaces KCSIE 2022 and came into force from 1 September 2023. Annex F contains a summary of substantive changes. The NSPCC has published a summary of key changes and the Education Safeguarding Service has produced a document and blog post regarding the specific online safety changes for DSLs and leaders. We recommend DSLs, school leaders and governors read KCSIE in its entirety, and implement actions as appropriate. A summary of key updates and additions to KCSIE for 2023 are as follows. • Additional clarification around the roles and responsibilities of education staff in relation to filtering and monitoring, including the role of the DSL. This includes links to direct schools to consider how they are meeting the DfE ‘Filtering and monitoring standards for schools and colleges’. Part two of KCSIE (para 142) states that Governing Bodies should review these standards and discuss them with IT staff and service providers and consider what more needs to be done to support their school in meeting these standards. • Clarification that being absent, as well as missing, from education can be a warning sign of a range of safeguarding concerns, including sexual abuse, sexual exploitation or child criminal exploitation. • Additional information on online pre-recruitment checks for shortlisted candidates. • Updated information on responding to allegations related to organisations or individuals using school premises.

Education Safeguarding Service Training, Services and Products To support schools and settings, the Education Safeguarding Service have updated their training materials and core resources, such as the Kent child protection and acceptable use policy templates, which can be found on our website. The Education Safeguarding Service also continue to offer a range of support to schools and settings, including safeguarding reviews, training packs for DSLs, Safeguarding Support Package for Schools, training, E-learning and other commissioned services. For further information please access our website or contact the service directly.

Primary School Conferences Coming soon we have two highly anticipated conferences for primary schools. Delegates will hear from national and international speakers as well as having the opportunity to attend interactive and practical workshops.

Primary Maths Conference: Mastering Multiplication

17 November 2023

Learning Outcomes

9.15am to 4.30pm

• To reflect on your current practice in teaching multiplication.

Ashford International Hotel, Kent

This year’s Primary Maths Conference will focus on supporting all pupils to develop a deep conceptual understanding of multiplication. With the Multiplication Tables Check now a statutory measure of attainment, we must do all we can to enable pupils to develop multiplication fact fluency to give them confidence, not just in the check, but in their own mathematical ability. Rote learning and rapid recall practise are often the dominant approaches, so how can we successfully teach pupils the structures and strategies they need at their fingertips to turn them into fluent, flexible, creative and imaginative mathematicians?

• To be inspired by a variety of ideas and resources to enable pupils to become fluent in their knowledge of their times tables facts. • To teach multiplication and multiplicative strategies more effectively, with a greater impact on pupils’ outcomes. • Share new ideas and approaches back in school.

Delegates will develop their professional knowledge and understanding of multiplication from the ground up, starting by considering the features of early maths teaching and learning that form the bedrock for multiplicative thinking with a range of thought-provoking speakers and workshop providers.

To book your place at this conference for £199 (+VAT) per delegate please click here here..

Primary Curriculum Conference: Strengthening the Values and Practices of the Primary Curriculum 1 December 2023 9.15am to 4.30pm Ashford International Hotel, Kent

With a keynote from Emma Turner, our Primary Curriculum Conference will explore the next steps in your curriculum design. Through a series of practical workshops and keynotes, delegates will consider the importance of ‘flexible connectivity’ and ‘complimentary sequencing’, in particular looking at how elements such as reading, number and vocabulary are supporting and connecting learning across subjects.

Early Years and Childcare High-quality, inclusive early years practice provides all children with access to opportunities and support during the earliest and most influential years of their learning and growing. Children with SEND and children from disadvantaged backgrounds particularly benefit from this provision and it is well documented that the positive impact of their early years experiences continue into their secondary school years. The effects of the pandemic still include delays in the development of children’s social skills, communication and literacy. The number of children presenting as needing additional support has increased dramatically over the last couple of years; however, a delay in learning and development may, or may not, indicate that a child has SEN. Early identification and action are critical to a child’s future progress and outcomes. It has never been so important to focus on effective early identification to accurately gauge children’s starting points and understand the progress that should be expected from the implementation of universal and targeted support strategies. It has also never felt so challenging to be able to do this. The early years sector is currently facing a whole host of challenges including a lack of funding, recruitment

and retention issues and rising numbers of children and families needing additional support. This significantly impacts practitioners’ ability to access relevant training to develop their skills and deepen their knowledge to respond to the current context.

Celebrating Inclusion in the Early Years Conference In Kent, the Celebrating Inclusion in the Early Years Conference acknowledges the professional work across the early years sector during a prolonged period of difficulty and offers an opportunity for reflection, learning and conversation to support every child getting the best opportunity to flourish from the earliest point of their journey. This full-day conference takes place on 28 March 2024 at the Ashford International Hotel and is KCC funded for settings within Kent.

The CHIRP Toolkit Confident, Happy, Independent, Resilient, Proud: Supporting our Young Children to be CHIRP Do our children feel proud of themselves? Before we consider this let us reflect on the meaning of the word. The Cambridge Dictionary defines proud as “feeling pleasure and satisfaction because you or people connected with you have done or achieved something good.” The feeling of pleasure or satisfaction comes from chemicals being released in our brain, and the release of these chemicals can come from different forms such as physical touch, eye contact, reaching a goal, interacting with others or recognition from someone. It is these chemicals which cause us to feel pride, alongside many other feelings and dispositions. Pride isn’t something that just appears; it’s not a milestone that children just reach. It is a sense of belief, a sense of worth in themselves, their abilities and their talents. It’s about children knowing they matter; they are loved, valued and important.

Pride is one of the five pillars of our CHIRP Toolkit. This toolkit will bring you inspiration and a rich variety of ideas, strategies and guidance to enable the children at your setting to be Confident, Happy, Independent, Resilient and Proud – in short, CHIRP! CHIRP will prompt personal reflection, allowing you to evaluate your own CHIRP dispositions and how you demonstrate these when engaging with children, families and the other adults you work with. As early years providers we should lead the way in supporting children to be CHIRP. Children need us to help them see what makes them feel good about themselves, and they need us to create opportunities to share their feelings of pleasure and satisfaction with others - and this toolkit will enable you to do this with ease. To read more about our CHIRP Toolkit and to purchase at the competitive price of £30 (+VAT) please visit our website. The Education People are offering a free webinar via Kinderley on Wednesday 25 October 2023 between 8pm and 9pm. Entitled Supporting Children to Feel Proud, Carla Nolan, an Equality and Inclusion Adviser for The Education People will explore the term ‘proud’, what causes this feeling and what it looks like in our young children. Carla will also share many practical examples of how you can support children to develop a sense of pride. Register to attend this free webinar here.
