Amy Raggett CPD Programme Manager amy.raggett@theeducationpeople.orgKS1: Maximising Children’s Motivation for Learning in Years 1 and 2
A conference for school leaders, teachers and teaching assistants.
Tuesday 6 June 2023 9.15am to 4.15pm
Motivation matters – “when pupils are motivated they pay more attention, put in more effort, persist for longer, and are able to work more independently.” Peps Mccrea, 2020.
In Years 1 and 2 we want all our children to be motivated by meaningful learning opportunities so that they make strong progress. Throughout the day we will be stitching together evidenceinformed teaching approaches to deliver the Key Stage 1 curriculum in a way that enables children to successfully transfer key knowledge to their long term memory without adding to your workload!
Speakers include:
Ruth Swailes - Continuous Provision – what constitutes an enabling environment, how does it work and how can it support learning in the Key stage 1 classroom?
Lindsay Pickton – Reading Across the Key Stage 1 Curriculum
Anthony Barlow – Real, Meaningful Geography: Developing Place Knowledge
There will be workshops from Ruth and Anthony, plus Laurie Jacques on ‘Mathematical Talk for Deep Mathematical Learning’, and Hythe Bay Primary School will look at the trials and tribulations of setting up continuous provision in their school and their journey.
There will be opportunities for delegates to network throughout the day.

What is Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)?
This E-learning module is designed to introduce the concept of working with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) students. This module is designed to introduce the concept of working with SEMH students. Created by Pete Stewart.
This module is designed to introduce the concept of effective classroom feedback. It will explore different types of feedback, including their pitfalls and benefits.
Do it Yourself: Grammar Skills
This course consists of two E-learning modules and a recorded webinar. This course will support all school practitioners, whether teaching assistants or class teachers, with their understanding and skills in English grammar and punctuation. It will help you to grow in confidence to use the right terminology when talking with children, and provides teaching tips too. You will learn through a combination of E-learning modules and a recorded webinar, and will have opportunities to undertake a variety of activities to help you check your understanding.
Our experts in the Equality Diversity Inclusion Team (EDIT) have recently launched the Refugee Support Package, an extensive new package designed to support schools in welcoming, inducting and teaching refugees and new arrivals from early years to across all key stages. The team have been working tirelessly with teachers and TAs supporting these pupils and in the last year they have worked with communities from Afghanistan, Ukraine and with the many new arrivals from other countries during these times of increased mobility.
They see wonderful practice in classrooms but are very aware that teachers need support, guidance, strategies, access to CPD and networking opportunities; staff are working with completely new communities, many having experienced very difficult times and pupils who are often at the earliest stages of English. They have also consulted with schools across the UK who are supporting refugees and new arrivals and have based this package on their needs.
The Refugee Support Package is based on extensive knowledge and strategies gleaned over the last 20 years. Teaching refugees and new arrivals with English as an Additional Language (EAL) isn’t simply a matter of teaching them English as we have all learnt.
The package contains strategies on:
• induction
• assessment
• working through challenging times
• ways of encouraging children to speak
• helping them to feel settled and seen
• supporting curriculum access
• classroom immersion
• identifying special educational needs.
By purchasing the Refugee Support Package you will have access to:
• three refugee networking meetings per year
• three EAL Pedagogy HUB meetings per year. EAL good practice strategies and current research are shared covering listening and understanding, speaking, reading and writing.
• an E-learning module on supporting refugees and new arrivals
• a resources pack (updated seasonally)
• two EDIT CPD Online courses for two members of staff.
“I loved the training! So many good ideas and resources. It took me back to my old EAL days. Everything was great and the practical suggestions are amazing. I’ll be looking at the recommended websites and discussing it with my colleagues in our next meeting.” - Highgate School
“So many teachers came away feeling more confident thanks to you. Lots of teachers have said that it’s been the most helpful CPD we’ve had in a long time!” - St James Church of England Primary School, Tunbridge Wells
For a one off payment of £595 (+VAT) you can see from the table below just how much you would save compared to purchasing individual support. The package initially runs to 31 March 2024.

As you know, the Early Years & Childcare Service’s ultimate goal is to ensure children across Kent have access to the best possible learning opportunities wherever they are in the County.
To achieve this, we work in partnership with the sector to support you in offering the best quality provision you can, and one of the ways in which we do this is by monitoring the Ofsted reports and summarising the current areas of focus. Some of the highlights from the latest reports include the following.
• Improved utilisation of outdoor play areas fully to support children’s allround development.
• The need to strengthen staff supervision and provide regular and targeted support to each member of staff.
• The support required by staff to build upon their understanding of the curriculum intent and delivery, to ensure children embed their learning and develop high levels of focus in a range of detailed areas.
• The support given to parents so that they are able to continue children’s learning at home.
• Professionally raise the quality of staff teaching to the highest level across a range of specific areas.
• Better staff monitoring, deployment and organisation to extend children’s learning even further and keep children engaged in learning.
If you would like a free ten minute conversation with an Improvement Adviser on how Threads of Success can support you to implement any of the above or similar Ofsted recommendations, please contact us at threadsofsuccess@theeducationpeople.org and we can arrange this for you.
