New Ro brings new ice skating rink to Lincoln Park

The City of New Rochelle will bring the magic of outdoor skating to Lincoln Park for the mid-winter vacation week, with a giant pop-up rink taking center court. The rink ā€“ packing even more wintertime fun at three times the size of the popular rink at the Holiday Market ā€“ will be open daily for eight days, Feb. 17-24. Guests can skate for free, with rentals provided at no charge, and the first 100 visitors each day will receive a complimentary cup of hot chocolate with entry. The rink will also feature a daylong Winter Carnival on Wednesday, Feb. 21, brought to life by the New Rochelle Community Justice Center. The City of New Rochelle invites all to celebrate the opening of the Lincoln Park ice rink and Winter Carnival with a kickoff event on Feb. 21 at 11:45 a.m. Council Member David Peters and the New Rochelle Community Justice Center will deliver remarks to welcome New Rochelleans to extend their winter fun, and even their holiday shopping, at the Lincoln Park mid-winter village and

carnival. In addition to ice skating in Lincoln Park, visitors will also be able to shop from a rotating roster of local vendors offering their artisan goods, food and beverages, and more, with three different small businesses spotlighted each day the ice rink is open. Featured local vendors will include Decota Naturals, Savage Custom Crafts, Humble Bumble, Sibalhe Teas, Asantis Jewels, JMckinley Bags, Matrix on the Go, Rays Empanadas, and Taqueria del Valle ā€œWe are delighted to bring an extra touch of winter magic to New Rochelle with the introduction of a pop-up ice skating rink and Winter Carnival at Lincoln Park. We wholeheartedly believe in creating regular opportunities for interaction and family fun, fostering a shared sense of identity and strengthening the bonds within our cityā€™s diverse neighborhoods,ā€ said Kathleen Gill, City Manager of New Rochelle. ā€œWe look forward to opening the rink as a fun, festive, and free activity for families to enjoy the warmth and

charm of New Rochelle.ā€ Special on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, the local New Rochelle Community Justice Center will transform the rink into a full-blown Winter Carnival. The Center invites the community to come together and build connections through fun activities such as arcade and carnival games, a bounce house, arts & crafts activities, wellness treatments, and seasonal dining offerings from local vendors and community partners. ā€œThe New Rochelle Community Justice Center is honored to join the community and to partner on this project,ā€ said Amanda Nathan, Project Director for the New Rochelle Community Justice Center. ā€œWe are excited for our youth participants to contribute by creating space for community members to come together and enjoy some winter fun! We are grateful to the City of New Rochelle and Councilman Peters for valuing projects that support a strong, connected, and

Democrat Susan Cacace tonight overwhelmingly won the Democratic Nomination for Westchester District Attorney at the County Democratsā€™ convention, held at the Westchester Marriott Hotel in Tarrytown. Cacace won 60% of the vote by Democratic District Leaders from across the county, giving her major organizational support for the primary and general elections. Judge Cacace, who brings decades of experience not only as a longtime jurist but also as a former prosecutor and attorney, stepped off the bench to run following the decision by incumbent Mimi Rocah to not seek another term. ā€œI am so honored to have earned this endorsement,ā€ said Cacace. ā€œAs Democrats, we are leading the way in making our criminal justice system stronger and fairer by not only holding wrongdoers accountable, but also showing compassion and finding better ways to prevent crime

and get at-risk people on a better track. ā€œRight now, too many people have lost faith in the government and feel unsafe,ā€ Cacace added. ā€œBut the fact is, we are able to keep our communities safe and correct long-standing issues in our criminal justice system if we do it smartly and consistently, focusing on both accountability and the underlying causes of criminal activity.ā€ Cacace, whose family has a long history of involvement in Democratic politics, said she would build on the reforms implemented by Rocah. ā€œWeā€™ve made great progress on wrongful convictions and expanding alternatives to incarceration, and we wonā€™t move backwards,ā€ she said. ā€œWeā€™re going to keep bringing crime down, get more people back on the right track, and make sure that everyone feels protected and respected by our Countyā€™s criminal justice system.ā€

Rye residents named to Open Door Foundation Board Rye residents Kim Oā€™Connor and Chiann Roveto have been named to Open Door Family Medical Centerā€™s Foundation Board. Oā€™Connor, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Rye resident since 2001, has actively participated in the community for many years, promoting youth and family wellbeing by volunteering for various local organizations. She has worked for more than 30 years with children and adults in a variety of settings, and presently operates M. Kim Oā€™Connor & Associates in Rye. A native of the Washington D.C. area, Oā€™Connor is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her graduate school work at the University of Maryland and NYU, where she taught in its School of Social Work. Roveto, an active member of various volunteer organizations serving the Rye and Westchester communities, has served since 2019 as Board Chair for the Junior Board for Family Services of Westchester (FSW), which provides fundraising, donor engagement and volunteer activities to support the work of the not-for-profit organization whose mental health and social service programs help families, children and individuals at every stage of their lives. She has also been actively involved since 2016 with the Meals on Wheels program, delivering meals to the elderly in the Rye community. Roveto grew up in Portland, Maine, and lived in Atlanta before moving to Rye 15 years ago. A graduate of Georgia State College, with a degree in sociology, she has worked in various capaci-

ties ā€“ counseling, programming, fundraising ā€“ at non-profit organizations that provide crisis counseling for underserved women. ā€œBoth Kim and Chiann have impacted the lives of so many people over the years,ā€ said Lindsay Farrell, President and CEO of Open Door. ā€œWe feel extremely fortunate to have them on our Foundation Board, where they will continue to serve the community for years to come.ā€ Oā€™Connor said she first became aware of Open Door years ago as an active member of Rye Presbyterian Church, which has long partnered with Open Door on its Baby Bundle program. The program provides prenatal patients with newborn necessities and information about resources available in the community. Open Door midwives deliver over 400 babies a year, a majority of whom live at or below the federal poverty level and struggle with inadequate housing, food insecurity, low levels of health literacy, and cultural/language barriers. ā€œAs a mental health clinician, who is particularly interested in the health of women and children, I know how difficult it is to deliver quality health care, to make it accessible and available for everyone in the community who needs it,ā€ she said. ā€œIā€™ve come to appreciate all that Open Door does on the front end in cultivating relationships with its clientele, and on the backend, behind the curtain, with its advocacy on the local, county, state and federal levels. It has a unique position in being the voice of those who desperately need that voice.ā€ According to Roveto, ā€œIā€™ve wanted to give back to the community by working with this same

population ā€“ many with low incomes, a lack of resources, often recent immigrants, who are faced with devastating crises. Iā€™ve seen from personal experience, how Open Door and FSW have helped their patients ā€“ many of whom lack medical insurance and donā€™t know where to turn ā€“ navigate the ins and outs of both the health and school systems.ā€ For over 50 years, Open Door has provided accessible, high-quality health care and wellness services, regardless of a patientā€™s ability to pay.

Open Door offers family medicine, dental services, behavioral health care, womenā€™s health including obstetrics, vision services, insurance enrollment assistance, and much more. Open Door operates health centers in Ossining, Brewster, Mamaroneck, Mount Kisco, Sleepy Hollow, and Port Chester, and a dental site in Saugerties. Additionally, Open Door runs a mobile dental van and nine School-Based Health Centers in the Ossining, Port Chester, and Webutuck school districts.

County passes affordable housing land acquisition acts Joined by members of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, Westchester County Executive George Latimer signed Land Acquisition Acts that allocate $2,700,000 for the purchase of land in Yonkers, and $3,000,000 for the purchase of land in the village of Ossining for the construction of affordable housing. Both properties will be marketed and leased to residents ages 62 years and older. The Yonkers property will offer 94 affordable housing units for seniors earning at or below 30% of the area median income, and the Ossining property will provide 74 units for seniors earning at or below 40% of the area median income. The Land Acquisition Acts are the first pieces of legislation Latimer will sign in 2024, proving that furthering fair housing throughout Westchester remains a primary focus. Latimer said: ā€œOur responsibility as a County government is to make sure that the opportunity for affordable housing is always there. Having access to decent housing is a basic, human right, and homes need to remain at a price point that all people can afford. This legislation is about filling a critical need that people have across our County, and when we allocate significant funding towards the construction of affordable units, we are helping to improve the quality of life for many of our residents and families.ā€ County NHLA funding is being used to fund a portion of the acquisition costs related to three privately owned parcels in Yonkers. County funds will be utilized to fund a

portion of the acquisition costs in Ossining, excluding the value of the non-residential commercial space. The project also received $995,000 in sales tax benefits from the Westchester County IDA. Since Latimer first took office in 2018, the availability of affordable housing has remained a top priority. Six years into Latimerā€™s administration, more than 5,599 units of affordable housing have been built, gone under construction, or are in the pipeline for the future. Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Planning Blanca Lopez said: ā€œAs 2020 Census data shows that seniors represent the fastest growing cohort in Westchester County, the Department of Planning fully supports the County Executiveā€™s continued commitment to invest in the development of senior housing throughout the County.ā€ Board Chair Vedat Gashi said: ā€œWords are powerful when actions follow. Itā€™s appropriate that these are the first items we take up in our first legislative session. These actions today reflect the concrete steps that the BOL is taking to provide more affordable housing in Westchester. Residents in Westchester ā€“ particularly seniorsā€“ suffer from a lack of affordable housing. This is a step to bring relief to our seniors. I want to thank our partners on the state level, municipalities, my fellow Legislators and County Executive George Latimer. We will do whatever we can to help seniors and all residents of Westchester County.ā€

The village of Mamaroneck has a new mayor. In November, Sharon Torres ā€” running as an independent ā€” won the seat, beating incumbent Tom Murphy, who had served as mayor for the past three terms. Campaigning from August through Election Day, Nov. 7, Torres made history as the fourth woman and first of Hispanic descent to serve as mayor of Mamaroneck. Torres has an interesting history and unusual road to becoming mayor of Mamaroneck. She graduated with a Bachelors of Science from Farmingdale State College and received her MBA from Pace University, Lubin School of Business. Torresā€™ background before entering the political sphere was in human resources, also including 10 years of experience in accounting. Torres decided to run for mayor because as she was volunteering she noticed a divisiveness in the village. People were saying that they missed the moniker of Mamaroneck as the ā€œfriendly villageā€ and things were starting to get negative. She felt she could change the way people

view the Board of Trustees, the villageā€™s governing legislative body. ā€œWe can be more inviting, I think we can make policy by listening to people and bringing them into the conversation,ā€ she said. ā€œI donā€™t wanna legislate for people, I wanna legislate with them.ā€ She mentioned in her work in HR and social work they had a phrase which she called ā€œNever about you without you.ā€ Why she ultimately decided to run for political office was the goal of having a community based feeling within the Board of Trustees. The balance to work her full-time job and campaign was tricky at first, but she said her campaign was completely volunteered, they were passionate and helped out where she couldnā€™t be. Torres credited her volunteers with helping spearhead her campaign. Spending time on social media provided another way to campaign. Not only was she able to post when and where she was campaigning, but to hear Mamaroneck residentsā€™ feedback and what they want for the village was also illuminating. Torres mentioned that social media allows all residents from differ-

ent parts of Mamaroneck to speak out, lend their voice and be heard. ā€œI tried my very best to use it [social media} to meet and greet people,ā€ she said. Part of being mayor for Torres is about being a public servant. She felt while there can be a negative connotation with it, she leans on the public servant side. ā€œTax dollars that run this village come from those residents, they have a voice. We should have a space where we are listening and feel respected,ā€ Torres said. Torresā€™ focus is projects regarding housing, pedestrian safety and flooding. The mayor mentioned how whatever decision is made she asks, ā€œDoes this make the situation ā€¦ better?ā€ On being the first person of color and fourth woman to be installed as mayor in Mamaroneck, Torres said, ā€œRepresentation matters. I hope being the fourth female, first Hispanic ā€” where we have a 24% Hispanic population ā€” that more women want to step up and do these things. Because I think we need that.ā€

Another ā€œSuperā€ Sunday Call me a stick in the mud, but I just donā€™t get as excited about the Super Bowl as I used to. On Sunday evening, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will square off in Super Bowl LVIII, the biggest sportingā€” and televisionā€”event of the year, and despite the fact that I think itā€™s bound to be a good one, I just canā€™t bring myself to care. Because in the end, Super Bowl Sunday has become less about crowning an NFL Champion and become more about serving as a weird funhouse mirror of the society in which we live. I get it, the ā€œspectacleā€ has always been a part of the Super Bowl, at least since Iā€™ve been alive.

But a little spectacle goes a long way, at least for me. I donā€™t need halftime stars parachuting onto the 50-yard-line from low-orbit satellites, I donā€™t need 12 musical acts fighting for space on the stage to capture the nostalgia crowd by singing 20 seconds of a hit from 1997. And I donā€™t need a six hour telecast to tell the story of a game that might feature 28 minutes of actual ā€œin-gameā€ action. I didnā€™t even used to have a problem with the heavy commercialization surrounding the game. But now Iā€™m wary of the way corporations are using the Super Bowl ads to inundate with new marketing campaigns well before kickoff. Companies used to pour their creative and financial backing into creating Super Bowl ads that would spark discussion, for better or worse. The day after the game, people would break down which

ones worked, which didnā€™t, which celebs made surprise turns as Doritos pitch men. But now, these advertisements pop up online weeks ahead of their air date, sparkingā€”what I assume is bot-drivenā€”discussion on social media pages, rendering the actual spots ineffective and incapable of eliciting an actual reaction from viewers. Itā€™s yet another reminder of how bloated and gross this entire affair has become. Corporations are so intent on manufacturing a big moment that these overly-engineered and think-tank researched ad buys end up falling flat. As for the game itself? Who knows? Could be a classic, could be a dud. Thatā€™s the kind of risk you take with Super Bowls. But the excessive pomp and circumstance only serves to highlight the failings of a bad game while taking

Super Bowl LVIII will be another long, bloated slog, no matter how good the game is. But Sports Editor Mike Smith will still be tuning in.

away from games that would live on in the annals of sporting history without the excess bells and whistles. And yet, people will still tune inā€” at least while the games are still on network televisionā€”and no lessons will be learned.

And for all my griping, Iā€™ll be just another one of the sheep blindly counting down ā€˜till kickoff. After all, itā€™s not like thereā€™s anything better on the tube. Follow Mike on Twitter @LiveMike_Sports

DiCarlo notches 300th career win By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor

Anyone who has gotten to know Fred DiCarlo over the years recognizes that the last thing he wants is to be the center of attention. But on Saturday night, all eyes were on DiCarlo, as his Eagles topped Pleasantville 45-30 at home to help the longtime coach reach an impressive milestone, notching his 300th career victory in the process. After the final whistle sounded, DiCarloā€™s historic win was celebrated by players, fans and family, as he was presented with a ceremonial basketball to commemorate his achievement. DiCarlo has been coaching in the school district for over 30 years, currently serving as both the head varsity basketball and

football coachā€”and said he has welcomed the opportunity to give back to the high school from which he graduated in 1985. He began his coaching journey with the district 34 years ago and took over as the head basketball and football coach in the late 1990s. In 2018, he also secured his 100th career football field. ā€œIā€™m so appreciative that the community and the school district have allowed me to coach for this long,ā€ said DiCarlo. ā€œI was really happy to get this win here at home, Iā€™m happy for my seniors, who have been with me for the last couple of years, so it really was a great day.ā€ One of those seniors, Aidan Schultz, was effusive in his praise of DiCarlo, noting that he was honored to be a

part of the group that secured the milestone win for the coach. Schultz plays both basketball and football for DiCarlo and said the coach has had an immeasurable impact on the lives of he and his teammates. ā€œAfter we beat Pelham on Thursday, coach mentioned that he was at 299 and you could tell all the guys wanted to get it for him,ā€ said Schultz. ā€œIā€™ve known him since I was five years old, and honestly, heā€™s been the most influential person Iā€™ve met in my middle and high school career; between sports and life in general, heā€™s trying to make us better players and better people.ā€ DiCarlo also noted that getting the win against Pleasantville was especially meaningful, given his connec-

Wrestlers hit the mat at County Center By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor

The Section 1 Wrestling Championships found a new home this past weekend, as the historic Westchester County Center played host to the most prestigious local tournament of the year. But even if no champions emerged from the ranks of The Reviewā€™s coverage area, a number of familiar grapplers fared quite well at the two-day event. Ryeā€™s C.J Luth finished second at 160-pounds, securing the distinction of being the top finisher for Review teams on Sunday. Luth scrapped his way to the championship bout where he was pinned by Nyackā€™s Sam Szerlip. Szerlipā€”who placed third at States last yearā€”came into the 2023-2024 season with high expectations and has met them thus far, being named the tournamentā€™s Most Outstanding Heavyweight Wrestler on the day. There were two local All-Section wrestlers at 101 pounds, as New Rochelleā€™s

Fotis Koufalis placed third and Harrisonā€™s Sienna Cozzali finished sixth. Cozzali, a sophomore, had a remarkable run this year, winning at the prestigious Eastern States event and is looking ahead to bigger things next year. ā€œI knew I wanted to get far, so I kept on practicing and practicing,ā€ said Cozzali. ā€œBecause hard work will usually get you there.ā€ The 108 pound bracket saw a number of familiar faces place in the top six, as Mamaroneckā€™s Tatsu Homma and Joe Sullivan placed third and fifth, respectively while Josue Aguilar took sixth. Huguenot 116-pounder Mateo Crino placed fourth to round out the finishers among local lightweight wrestlers. Luthā€™s teammate Thomas Anderson secured a fourthplace finish in the 215-pound bracket, while Eastchesterā€™s Joe Roche closed out his varsity career with a win, topping Tappan Zeeā€™s Cameron Keeperman to take fifth in the division. For senior wrestlers, the trip to the County Center was

a fitting end to their time as high school wrestlers, but for younger wrestlers, like Cozzali, getting the chance to

take the mat at Westchesterā€™s most famous arena will likely serve as extra motivation for next yearā€™s campaign.

ā€œThis gives me a lot of drive for next year,ā€ said Cozzali. ā€œIā€™m hoping to get first in this tournament and go even

farther than I did today.ā€ Contact: sports@hometwn.com
