We’re at the halfway point in the year and it really feels like summer is upon us thanks to the gorgeous weather we’ve been enjoying. The sunny days bring about a sense of positivity and hopefulness, which was defi nitely the feeling at this year’s British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show and Dental Technology Showcase. The show was well attended and buzzing with activity on the exhibitor stands and in lectures, and, as always, it was great to catch up with so many friendly faces. We’ve provided a round-up of the show on pages 20-25.

While shows and conferences provide a wonderful chance to meet face to face and see new technologies in person, it’s important to have the ability to catch up in between events. The Dental Technicians Great Britain Facebook group really provides a safe place to do exactly this. Here

you can ask questions, share ideas and opinions, and create discussion with your peers. If you’re not already a member, I encourage you to join, you really won’t regret it. PRETTAU® SKIN®

ULTRA-THIN ZIRCONIA VENEERS (0.2 MM)

Non-prep veneers are the newest solution that will change the way we think about dentistry. Using a new technique, it is now possible to realise ultra-thin zirconia veneers (Prettau® Skin®) with a thickness of only 0.2mm. In this way, patients can get a healthy smile with zero to minimal impairment of tooth substance. The new technique is suitable for the aesthetic correction of tooth discolourations, tooth gaps, crooked teeth, cone teeth and abraded teeth.

The entire Prettau® line by Zirkonzahn can be used to manufacture Prettau® Skin® However, Prettau® Dispersive® zirconia is particularly suitable, as it is already provided with a natural colour gradient from dentine to enamel during the manufacturing process. Prettau® 3 Dispersive® is the latest zirconia material developed by Zirkonzahn. In addition to the colour gradient, also translucency and flexural strength levels change: whereas the incisally increasing translucency results in a highly translucent incisal edge, the cervically increasing flexural strength results in an extremely high flexural strength at the tooth neck. Dentsply Sirona launches a series of resources to help dental professionals develop more sustainable dental practices

Following World Environment Day on 5 June 2023, Dentsply Sirona wants to emphasise their commitment to promoting sustainability and protecting the environment. To better support dental professionals on their journey towards more sustainable dental practices, Dentsply Sirona has put together a Sustainability in Dentistry Resource Kit - available free of charge. This contains resources to guide dental professionals towards a better understanding of sustainability in dentistry, giving them the chance to commit to sustainable dentistry and information on specific actions they can take in their practices and labs.

Sustainability is one of the biggest challenges facing society, and every industry – including dentistry.

Last year, Dentsply Sirona conducted a global study1 amongst more than 1,300 dentists from the US, Europe, Asia and Latin America which revealed that threequarters of the participants believe there is a knowledge gap regarding sustainability in dentistry. To help answer that need and help support dental professionals on their journey to become more sustainable in their practice or lab, Dentsply Sirona has put together a Sustainability in Dentistry Resource Kit - available free of charge on their webpage - and invites everyone to join in the sustainability challenge by taking one step today to understand, commit or take action for more sustainable dentistry.

Resources offered

The Sustainability in Dentistry Resource Kit, aimed at helping facilitate dental professionals’ journey toward developing a more sustainable practice, consists of three parts:

• Understanding what sustainability means for dentistry, including why and how dental professionals can have an impact Acting more ecologically and socially responsible in everyday life does not seem so difficult, but where does one start in the dental industry? To clarify this question, Dentsply Sirona has developed a Sustainability Educational Curriculum, as part of our Clinical Educational program, called DS Academy. Continuing Education (CE) credits2 are available for each completed course. The courses are led by experienced dentists and sustainability experts who are passionate about making a difference in the dental industry.

• Taking action - Interactive Toolkit for more environmentally friendly dental practices

Dentsply Sirona is a proud co-founder of FDI World Dental Federation’s Sustainability in Dentistry initiative. As a result, an interactive toolkit has been designed to give concrete examples of actions dental professionals can take to reduce the environmental footprint in dental practices. Once registered, dental professionals will discover various sustainability challenges and earn recognition awards for their practice by taking on an active role in making dentistry more sustainable.

• Committing to a more sustainable dentistry - The Pledge

As another result of the partnership with FDI, a Pledge for Sustainable Dentistry has been published to invite dental professionals to show their support for environmental sustainability within oral healthcare. By signing, dental professionals express their commitment to reducing negative environmental impacts of their practice or lab.

Attendees enjoyed a virtual display of poster abstracts and a bursary fund for participants from low-income countries.

Zirconia VITA YZ ST Multicolor: All you need in a blank!

Working monolithically has many advantages - the risk of chipping is significantly reduced compared to fully veneered restorations. The space that actually has to be planned for the veneer is eliminated, allowing work to be carried out in a more minimally invasive manner. Due to the production in the digital workflow, such supplies can be manufactured more economically than in the analogue way. However, for monolithic restorations to be successful, the CAD/CAM material must meet several basic requirements. In the following interview, dentist and dental technician Dr. Julio Gomez Paris (Rosario, Argentina) reports on his experiences with the zirconia system VITA YZ and why he is particularly enthusiastic about the super-translucent and polychromatic material variant VITA YZ ST Multicolor in the production of monolithic restorations, and demonstrates this using a bridge restoration in the anterior mandible.

You are both a dentist and a dental technician. What is your experience with the zirconia VITA YZ in terms of precision, edge stability and fit? As a dentist and dental technician, I always experience the complete supply workflow and have a complete overview of the precision, from the preparation and the intraoral scan, to the milling strategy, sintering, fitting and integration. I have already tried a number of zirconias, and from my experience I can say that VITA YZ is my absolute favourite zirconia. The sintering parameters are correct, the precision and fit are excellent. Edge areas can be milled very finely and have absolutely stable edges. In short, VITA YZ offers me what I expect from a zirconia.

Depending on the indication, VITA YZ is available in four different translucency levels with different strengths. Which zirconia variants do you use and for what purpose?

I use the extra translucent VITA YZ XT for monolithic anterior crowns on undyed tooth stumps, and the super translucent VITA YZ ST on discolored stumps or abutments for crowns and bridges with dentogingival involvement. I use the highly translucent VITA YZ HT for screw-retained implants in edentulous jaws. Here and with very dark or metallic stumps, I work in conjunction with the universal veneering ceramic VITA LUMEX AC to reproduce the gingival and dental facets and, if necessary, as a support in masking them.

Is the zirconia VITA YZ ST Multicolor a material for all fixed indications?

For which clinical situations do you specifically use the material and why? Yes, VITA YZ ST is a true versatile materials that covers most indication areas. Especially as a multicolour variant, this zirconia, with its integrated chroma gradient, is perfect for monolithic restorations. The blank already possesses great aesthetics; therefore, in many cases, it does not require individualisation with a veneering ceramic. Monolithic crowns and bridges are the prime applications for this material, but individualisation or characterisation is also always possible. I also like to use the super translucent zirconia monolithically on implants. In the case of dentogingival reconstructions, purely gingival customisation is often sufficient.

Why did you decide on VITA YZ ST Multicolor in the present case of mandibular incisors with previous periodontal damage?

For the bridge in the anterior mandible, I have consistently opted for a monolithic solution because I wanted to be as minimally invasive as possible. My top priority was to preserve the vitality of the delicate teeth through careful preparation. As a basic requirement, VITA YZ ST Multicolor offers me a minimum layer thickness, as well as the strength required for a bridge construction. At the same time, the polychromatic material also makes it possible to achieve excellent aesthetics monolithically, so that I don't have to plan any space for the veneer.

What is the advantage of the integrated chroma gradient in combination with the basic shade fidelity to the VITA shade standards?

It is definitely an advantage if the specific basic tooth shade can be found precisely in the blank. In my clinical experience, the zirconia system VITA YZ has proven to be absolutely true to shade. The VITA SYSTEM 3D-MASTER also completely covers the range of tooth shades, so that I can find the right shade for every patient. For me, this shade fidelity is a basic requirement so that I can successfully work monolithically with a material and achieve aesthetic results, especially in the anterior tooth region. In general, it saves a lot of time if I don't have to first set the right shade with corrective firing.

CANDULOR EXPANDS ITS ARTICULATOR PORTFOLIO WITH THE ARTICULATOR CA 3.0 LARGE WITH INCREASED HEIGHT

The Articulator CA 3.0 LARGE is a 10 mm higher version of the CA 3.0 with an adapted construction height of 126 mm. Take Pride...

Each June is International Pride Month, where the LGBTQ+ community and its supporters come together to celebrate love, friendship, achievements, solidarity, acceptance, and equality while also looking ahead to the future and the work that still needs to be done.

Many companies will show their support in an outward manner, adopting the rainbow colours within their logos, websites and social media channels. However, Pride Month is about more than parades and rainbows, it is a reminder of the diversity of the human race and the need to reflect upon the way we treat one another in a personal and professional capacity.

Therefore, Pride Month poses the perfect reminder to look within our workplaces and consider whether the needs of the LGBTQ+ workforce – both existing and potential – are being met. So, what can businesses do?

Evaluate

Businesses that really want to make a difference will do more than change their logo, they will look within their organisation to consider whether it meets the needs of their LGBTQ+ workforce.

While a diverse team creates an environment where varying viewpoints, experiences and opinions can enrich a business, it also poses its challenges.

With diversity comes inequality and discrimination, which can hugely impact the mental health of your employees.

It is the responsibility of employers to regularly evaluate the policies and standards within the business designed to tackle these issues. In doing so, you will be leading from the top by implementing the kind of culture you want to permeate throughout your business.

Support

The workplace should always feel like a safe environment and all employees should feel able to talk about any support needs they might have. Employers must understand that staff may have experienced a less supportive – or worse, a discriminatory - workplace in the past, which may cause a fear or anxiety around asking for help. Rather than having a policy of acceptance and assuming everyone knows this is in place, it should be actively promoted and discussed regularly as a team. This will ensure LGBTQ+ team members feel safe and supported, and that their concerns will always be taken seriously.

Zero-tolerance

There should be a zero-tolerance policy on bullying and discrimination within your workplace, which can be implemented with clear and consistent guidelines. These should be discussed with the whole team at regular intervals, and enforced as a rule. While it is not possible to prevent discrimination if someone really wants to take that route, you can make it difficult by ensuring the team will not tolerate or support any such behaviour, and you can set an example by dealing with it strongly at the earliest moment.

Provide opportunities

All minority groups will face challenges that can stunt career development and hold them back from opportunities afforded to others. As an employer you can ensure that all team members have access to a wealth of training and education resources to ensure they are able to progress within their career.

While we often think of Pride Month as a time for parades and parties, it can offer businesses so much more. It is the perfect chance to evaluate your current practices in order to create a more inclusive environment that attracts a rich and diverse workforce that can only be beneficial to the organisation.

ADI PRESIDENT LETS HIS HAIR DOWN RAISING OVER £20,000 FOR CHARITY

The President of the ADI, Amit Patel , braved the shave to raise money for the fantastic charity, Wells on Wheels .

At the recent ADI Team Congress, Amit Patel committed to shaving his head, live on stage, in return for donations to Wells on Wheels Donators were invited to take part in cutting Amit's impressive 27 inches of hair, which he has been growing out for several years. So far, the big chop has raised more than £20,000, and donations are still coming in.

Wells on Wheelsis a charity dedicated to making water more accessible to remote communities in India. It raises money to supply water cooler bottles that can be rolled along the ground instead of carried on the head, reducing risk of injury and enabling more young girls to stay in education for longer.

DTS 2023 IT’S LIKE WE NEVER LEFT

All businesses big and small have been impacted in recent years due to a myriad of reasons. This year’s Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) had much to offer dental technicians in the way of guidance, information, support and camaraderie.

In the OTA Seminars & Den-tech Forum, Ashley Byrne, managing director of Byrnes Dental Laboratory, presented his lecture, 21st Century dental technology: The art of running a modern lab. Ashley explored the ways that digital technology can enhance the workflow in the lab. ‘We’re no longer simply making teeth’, Ashley noted. There are many challenges for the lab team and, according to Ashley, this is where digital technology comes to the fore. ‘Digital dentistry doesn’t dilute skill, it’s actually doing the reverse,’ Ashley told delegates.

Delegate Jack G, dental technician, said: ‘The session was informative and I liked the ideas about streamlining the workflow – when funds allow, we hope to make our workflow more digitalised.’

Another delegate, Apoorva Tendur, commented: ‘The speaker was excellentvery knowledgeable and interesting.’

James Green, maxillofacial and dental laboratory manager at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children NHS Foundation Trust, shared his lecture, titled Custom-made medical devices legislation: The impact of Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic. This vital topic was masterfully delivered by James, who provided an overview of UK and European Union legislation for custom-made medical devices, guiding delegates through the new potential requirements.

Delegate Pete Brookes, clinical dental technician at Simply Dentures, said: ‘The speaker clearly knew his topic and was able to outline what he knew well. Very useful inclusion of charts.’

In the DTS Lecture Theatre, Daniele Rondoni, manager and director of Daniele Rondoni Dental Laboratory, presented a fantastic session on The approach to predictable aesthetics. Daniele noted the ‘importance of individuality with each case’, and how dentists will have different and requirements that dental technicians must be well-equipped for.

Delegates were taught about selecting high quality zirconia, and how they can enhance their work through its correct handling and processing. Daniele went on to describe simple, easily implementable techniques in finishing zirconia restorations

to create predictable aesthetics that can be replicated within daily workflows in the lab.

L. Ansell, from Wade Dental Lab, shared her thoughts on the session: ‘I really enjoyed my time in this lecture - I’ve come away with some new information.’

Bianca Bacean, from Wade Dental Lab, said: ‘The speaker covered and clearly explained very important day-to-day aspects of dental technology and situations. I’m looking forward to applying a few things learned in the lecture in my daily work.’

Scott Hippey presented his session in the OTA Seminars & Den-tech Forum, Full arch digital workflow. The session was packed with delegates keen to discover more on this subject, and Scott walked them through how he produces All-on-4 implant cases with exocad, Dess, 3D printing and CNC milling. Delegates had the chance to watch Scott’s process in action with a video showing how he utilises digital tools to create precise and predictable results.

Delegate Simon H, ceramicist at Queensway Dental Laboratory, shared his thoughts on Scott’s lecture: ‘Useful and informative, with some tips pinched to take back to the lab!’

Another delegate, Dean B, from Queensway Dental Laboratory, said: ‘Scott’s session was very good and informative. Clear and precise.’

On the Saturday, Steve Taylor, dental technician at Taylor Dental Technology Centre, shared an incredibly topical and important session titled Mental health and wellness: A framework for dental laboratories and clinical dental technicians. Steve explored the subject of mental health within dentistry, sensitively yet with transparency. Steve shared some brilliant tips on how dental labs can become more aware about the issues of mental health, and how they can support their staff. ‘You’re allowed to talk about it in dentistry’, Steve said, ‘it’s not shameful and it’s not embarrassing’.

At the end of the session, Steve was presented with the DLA Fellowship Award by Ashley Byrne. Steve is now the fourth recipient of this award, which was given to him due to his array of contributions to the profession and for his long-standing support of the DLA. A big congratulations to Steve!

Delegate Kathy Lancaster said: ‘This is something that doesn’t get spoken about. The session was very informative and I will certainly be looking at it in further detail. Steve is a great ambassador for this cause.’

Christina Worle, general dental practitioner, also invited delegates to consider another vital conversation within dentistry, with her session Inclusion oral health and trauma informed dentistry

Christina shared her experiences of working with disadvantaged individuals, such as the homeless and those in prison, and how trauma from childhood can impact patients’ ability to seek and tolerate care.

Delegate Renata Noori, dentist at Top Medical Birmingham, said Christina was ‘brilliant, while Natalie Peary, dental therapist, said the presentation was ‘informative’ and it really highlighted ‘how much more we can do as a profession, with easy changes to dramatically improve people’s experiences’.

The future is bright for the dental technology sector, and DTS is proud to have provided a platform where members of the profession could come together to contribute, network, socialise and collaborate.

DLA PRESENTS PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS AT DTS 2023

The Special Recognition Award for Services to Dental Technology was presented to Robert Slade by Steve Campbell, DLA president, during the ‘Skillbond Sundown Session’ at the Arden Hotel and Leisure Club on Friday 12 May 2024. Rob is sales director at Skillbond and has dedicated his career to supporting the profession of dental technology, always going the extra mile. Thanks to Rob’s drive and determination, and with his exceptional knowledge of product and customer needs, Skillbond has grown to what it is today: the largest digital manufacturing operation in the UK dental market. Rob was the first winner of this award, which won’t be an annual award; it will only be presented when there is an outstanding candidate who deserves such recognition.

The DLA Fellowship Award was presented to Stephen Taylor by Ashley Byrne, DLA director for communications, in the DLA Lecture Theatre on Saturday13 May 2024. ADAPTING in dentistry

In the dental laboratory, changes have been made to the processes and materials used by dental technicians in response to the changing expectations and attitudes of clients and their patients. How will these trends continue to evolve as dentistry moves into the future?

AESTHETICS

As you know, restorative dentistry is not a new concept. Early historical records show us the various materials that were used to replace missing teeth. But it was not until 1965 that the first ‘modern’ dental implant was placed in a human patient. Since then, the approach has changed and restorative dentistry now offers solutions that are no longer ‘one size fits all’ but rather cater to a range of patient and client needs. Therefore, dental technicians have adapted their materials, systems and laboratory solutions to these changing requirements.

For example, the rise of social media has prompted many patients to seek restorative work that is both functional and aesthetic. Ceramic zirconia has gained popularity due to its biocompatibility and favourable mechanical and aesthetic properties. Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) was once a widely used material, but unfavourable properties such as its translucency have been noted. Thanks to all the improvements made to the new products, it is possible to better meet the needs of customers. In turn, their patients can appreciate more choice and enjoy restorations that improve their confidence ss well as their health.

SPEED

Immediacy is everything these days. Your customers’ patients very often demand fast delivery, so how has the dental laboratory adapted to these new expectations? Few areas of the profession have escaped the impact of digital dentistry. Many of your clients may use specific technologies, software, and digital tools to streamline their workflows and improve the patient

experience. There is a lot of literature on digital technology in the dental laboratory; Studies have shown that total lab time can be reduced by using a digital workflow instead of a traditional workflow. This enables dental technicians to deliver results to their customers faster. However, many technicians still prefer traditional methods, and one study found that they can provide more conservative and aesthetic results than a digital smile design program.

Research suggests that comparisons between conventional and digital methods should be made with caution; In fact, many materials and methods vary from study to study, and several variables affect the results. While digital advances have improved the workflow for many dental technicians, there is certainly no reason to change their preferred way of working if it is convenient for you, your client and ultimately their patients.

GO GREEN

The environmental impact of dentistry is perhaps one of the most important topics to emerge in recent years. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the field, dentistry is always a heavy user of energy, water and resources. Patient views on sustainability and healthcare are certainly changing; results from one survey shows that 89% of respondents believe it is important for healthcare providers to become more sustainable and an additional 36% think healthcare providers should adopt sustainability, even if the cost is higher. With this changing patient perspective, your clients may be interested in re-evaluating

their impact on the planet and the ways they can mitigate it. They can take a look at the dental labs they work with and how they work to reduce their footprint.

You don’t have to be an environmentalist to make positive changes in your dental lab; all professionals in the field can, in various ways, contribute to reducing the environmental impact of dentistry. Indeed, you can begin by making small changes; the materials you use can be a good starting point, as can your supplier. Are they making a conscious effort to be greener? You may want to look around to see if any other suppliers are making a amore mindful effort. Investing in these providers is a great way to start making an impact within your dental lab.

Before simply buying a 3D printer for your lab, you need to look beyond the upfront acquisition cost. It’s important to carefully weigh up the options and find the best possible machine for your needs.

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS?

3D printers for dentistry generally fall into one of two major categories. On the one hand we have the industrial-grade, highthroughput machines that feature huge capacity and pinpoint accuracy. While these machines are often a good choice for larger dental labs that create hundreds of appliances per day, their high upfront cost, large size, and maintenance requirements mean that they’re often an impractical solution for individual, smaller labs.

Desktop 3D printers, on the other hand, feature excellent quality at a significantly reduced price and are a much more manageable size. Desktop 3D printers are just as versatile as their larger counterparts but tend to feature smaller build platforms and lower overall throughput.

With the decrease in price, size, and maintenance offered by high-resolution desktop 3D printers, this technology is now within reach for many smaller labs. They’re an incredible tool to help speed up delivery times, increase efficiencies, and impress your dentists. But if you’re new to the tech, where do you even start? In the following sections, we work through some of the most commonly asked questions relating to 3D printing in dentistry.

WHY IS 3D PRINTING IMPORTANT FOR DENTISTRY?

Over the last decade, the widespread proliferation of dental 3D scanners, CAD/ CAM treatment planning software, and dental mills have contributed to an improved patient experience in dentistry.

If you already have an intraoral scanner and planning software in place, a 3D printer is the missing part of the jigsaw – the final step in the process which will bring everything together and enable you to maximise your other digital investments.

3D printers can provide highly customised manufacturing for single-unit or smallbatch parts at a significantly lower cost than traditional methods, with much less labour and greater reliability and repeatability. Because they’re capable of printing disparate objects without the need for retooling, they’re ideal for the type of production required in dentistry.

Fabricating multiple copies of slightly different parts (such as models for clear aligners) or a single copy of a single part (such as a surgical guide) is a very expensive, labour-intensive process in the world of traditional dental manufacturing.

3D printing technology is moving at an incredible pace, so if it is something you have just started looking into, you’ll be forgiven for thinking it’s a bit of a minefield!

Pouring-up models in stone creates a lot of waste and can be very time-consuming. 3D printing has the potential to make this process much faster and less expensive.

3D-printed dental appliances cut across a wide selection of therapies and disciplines, including orthodontic treatments such as models for making clear aligners, retainers, and indirect bonding trays. General dentistry can benefit from many of these same treatments with the addition of biocompatible full-arch surgical guides, splints and nightguards, digital dentures, cast, retainers, removable die models, and temporary crowns. This list will grow as the technology and material capabilities develop. With such a wide variety of uses from a single tool, it’s clear to see how 3D printing can provide a huge benefit to dental laboratories.

WHAT MAKES A 3D PRINTER DENTAL?

The adoption of 3D printers by the dental industry has been driven by innovation in three areas:

1. Biocompatible Materials

The development of biocompatible printing materials is at the heart of dental 3D printer adoption. While the production of dental models is crucial for many labs, the ability to create intraoral dental appliances such as nightguards, surgical guides, and digital dentures, vastly increases the usefulness and functionality of the machines.

Since the introduction of biocompatible materials for 3D printing in dentistry, there has been an emphasis on improving mechanical properties in order to provide printed intraoral parts that have enough strength and resistance for patient use. Because new and better materials could come from a variety of suppliers, it’s important to choose a 3D printer that supports third-party materials.

With many companies scrambling to add certified dental resin capabilities to their 3D printer line-up, it’s clear to see that 3D printing in dentistry is only set to increase in popularity. A cursory look at the most popular printers will give the impression that any of their machines will dramatically improve your dental workflow. But if they cannot print final dental appliances with certified biocompatible resin, their usefulness in dentistry will be limited.

2. Accuracy and Repeatability

The primary requirements of dental manufacturing are high accuracy and repeatable results. It isn’t enough for a single print to provide good results; they need to be consistent and repeatable over time and across various environments.

Accuracy and repeatability are essential qualities for a dental 3D printer. Recent advancements in materials and printing technology have supercharged the accuracy of 3D printers, propelling them beyond what was originally thought possible.

3. Production Speed and Scalability

To keep pace with a busy lab, a good dental 3D printer should offer rapid print speeds and high overall production throughput. To this end, build plate size and light delivery technology are features that should not be overlooked. Although your lab may not need high throughput immediately, production needs can scale up rapidly. A printer that seems adequate before you start may become a bottleneck when requirements increase.

While dental 3D printers are sometimes used to manufacture only one or two parts at a time, many cases require the rapid fabrication of a large number of parts. Clear aligner cases are the obvious example of this, but batched nightguards, surgical guides, and denture bases all require large print volume as well.

WHAT FACTORS AFFECT PRINTER SPEED?

There are still big differences in production speed and scalability between individual printers, and the discrepancies are largely due to the technology.

Digital dentistry is primarily served by a type of 3D printer that falls under the umbrella term stereolithography. There are three ways to deliver light to cure photosensitive, liquid resin - each with its own advantages and drawbacks.

POST PROCESSING

The post processing of resin models and appliances can sometimes be overlooked. It’s important to understand the process and whether it’s compatible with the resins you want to use.

When working with resin, a wash and cure station drastically simplifies postprocessing. Since you’ll need to wash, dry then harden resin 3D prints, a wash and cure station is a must-have.

Many manufacturers will have their own units that work with their printers, offering features like pre programmable materials and timings to ensure resin materials are processed correctly.

THE TIME IS NOW

3D printing for dentistry is developing at a rapid pace, and there’s no doubt that it will continue to make amazing advances in performance and reliability in the coming years.

Understandably, this can give rise to concerns about machines quickly becoming outdated. After all, when you’re making a significant investment in new kit, you want it to stand the test of time.

However, if you carefully consider your choice and select a printer that allows for 3rd party resins, and has a robust software and hardware ecosystem, you’ll quickly see the benefits as it will dramatically improve speed, quality, customisability, and costs. If you want to future-proof your lab and invest in 3D printing, there’s never been a better time than right now.

CHECKLIST TO MAXIMISE YOUR DENTAL LAB JOB ADVERT’S POTENTIAL

Andy Foster shares his top tips to enhance your chances of attracting the best candidates for your job vacancy

To create a job advert that efficiently converts, it’s important to include basic details and provide a clear background of your company while recruiting for specialised roles such as an experienced ceramist or prosthetics/removable’s dental technician.

Missing out on essential components in your job advert could cost you a potential candidate. Therefore, covering all the elements listed in our essential checklist would maximise your chances of attracting and placing a top-tier technician.

1. Use the correct tone

One of the critical aspects to consider when crafting a job description is the tone of writing. The issue with many job adverts is the way they are written, this starts with the tone.

A poor tone can make the job seem dull, unprofessional, and uninviting, which may deter qualified candidates from applying even if they are interested in the job itself. By contrast, a well-written job description that uses the right tone can attract top candidates and make them excited about the job application process.

It can also give candidates a better idea of a company’s culture and work environment, making them more likely to envision themselves working for that particular organisation. Overall, using the right tone can help convey the right message, showcase the dental lab’s personality and values, appeal to the right candidates, and ultimately increase the likelihood of finding the best candidate for the job.

Here’s an example:

We’re currently seeking an experienced CAD/CAM dental technician to join our team. As an experienced CAD/CAM technician, you will be responsible for designing cases from single units to full arch implant bridges, using ExoCad and 3Shape software. We use the latest digital technology including Nexa ZiP printers, DWX-4W milling machines and the latest materials.

You should be detail-oriented, organised, and able to work independently or as part of a team. If you have a passion for dental technology, take pride in your work, and want to make a difference in patient care, we encourage you to apply for this position.

Remember, most technicians might already be settled into their current dental lab roles, and to get them interested, you have to put in extra effort to sell them the role.

2. Choose the correct length

The ideal length of a job description often depends on the profession you are advertising, but as a general rule, try to stay under 700 words. Research conducted by Wyzowl shows that the average attention span of a person is less than a goldfish’s (8.25 seconds), so a job description that is too long may be overlooked, and ultimately deter prospective candidates.

Moreover, a lengthy job advert could give the impression of a dull and lifeless work environment, while a well-structured and engaging job description can convey an ideal balance between professionalism and personality.

3. Searchability

Searchability is crucial when writing a job description because it ensures your content is easily discoverable by potential candidates.

With so many job postings online, candidates often use specific search terms to filter through the job listings. If your job title or description doesn’t include the right keywords, it may not appear in the search results, or worse, it may attract the wrong candidates.

Hence, if you decide to go with an unconventional job title like ‘Exocad Expert’ instead of a more common one like ‘CAD/ CAM Dental Technician’ you might find it hard to attract the desired traffic. Therefore, it’s crucial to strike a balance between creativity and practicality when choosing job titles and descriptions.

By considering relevant search terms, you have a better chance of reaching the right audience and attracting qualified technicians with the necessary skills and experience for the job.

4. Shift your focus to the job itself While it may seem like an obvious inclusion, it’s easy to overlook the importance of the job itself when writing a job advert by getting caught up in selling the company.

Candidates generally search for whether they can perform the job before anything else. While information about the company’s history and growth plans is great, limiting it to no more than three lines can be beneficial when trying to stay within the 700-word limit.

Technicians are eager to learn about the job, including day-to-day responsibilities and the required experience level. By focusing on the role and tasks in detail, you’ll have enough space to promote the position.

5. Go easy on the requirements! Based on a study by Harvard Business Review, men tend to apply for a job if their qualifications match about 60% of the listed requirements, while women usually only apply if they meet 100%.

In light of this, it’s crucial to carefully evaluate the job requirements. Differentiate the ‘must-have’ skills, experiences, and qualifications from the ‘niceto-have’ ones.

Creating two distinct lists will ensure that you don’t deter too many potential candidates. In addition, if a particular skill is learnable, you may want to leave it off the list entirely.

Zirkonzahn equips the M6 milling unit with the new Performance Spindle M6 by default. Thanks to a specially developed Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) which is optimally adapted to the milling unit, this spindle can reach a maximum torque of 200 Ncm at speeds of 6,000 to 50,000 rpm with a peak power of 2.5 kW.

In addition, the milling unit is equipped with a contamination-protected tool chamber which is separate from the milling chamber and is equipped with automatic tool changer function. Up to two magazines with 30 slots each, for up to 60 milling tools, can be stored in a safely and orderly manner. The tools are automatically checked for type or damage before and after each milling process.

THE ASSEMBLY, TESTING AND CUSTOMISATION OF THE NEW M6 TELESKOPER BLANK CHANGER MILLING UNIT. A GLIMPSE INTO ZIRKONZAHN’S NEW PREMOLARIS PRODUCTION SITE

The in-house principle has always guided Zirkonzahn since its first steps in the dental market. This principle is applied to almost the whole range of the company’s products, which includes dental materials (such as zirconia, metals and resins), CAD/CAM systems, furnaces, implant prosthetic components, digital diagnostic technologies and all that is needed to finalise individual dental restorations.

Products are studied, developed and produced in-house in close collaboration with the company’s research and development team, which constantly works to improve and fine-tune solutions to create a reliable planning and working environment, where hardware, software, tools and materials form an optimum match in the complete workflow. The full control over the entire production process allows Zirkonzahn to have a complete understanding of their products and to react very quickly to customers’ needs.

The newest milling unit, the M6 Teleskoper Blank Changer, is the company’s answer to the increasing need of more automation as well as greater speed and performances. The machine

is provided with full-automatic blank changer function for 16 or 56 blanks (upgradeable), the Teleskoper Orbit M6 with Ø 125mm and the newly developed Performance Spindle M6 with Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), permitting a maximum torque of 200 Ncm at speeds of 6,000 to 50,000 rpm with a peak power of 2.5 kW.

Most of the machine parts are produced in-house in the Molaris I & II production centres and then assembled in the Premolaris production site. Built in 2021, Premolaris is the newest location of the fi ve production sites owned by the company, all located within the vicinity of the fi rm’s headquarters in South Tyrol (Italy). Premolaris is the place dedicated to the assembly, testing and customisation of all the company’s milling units, furnaces and scanners as well as to the surface treatment of their own-produced implant prosthetics components.

In Premolaris, the company’s chemistry labs are also located, where, for instance, colours and resins are developed and where burs are diamond-coated. In Premolaris, the diff erent parts of the M6 milling unit, e.g. splindle and orbit, are assembled into the machine with all hardware and software components. All parts such as ball screws, linear rails,

motors and milling spindles are tested for precision before they are installed and the obtained data is recorded and registered. Then, the machine is calibrated and fi netuned at individual stations according to standardised production processes.

Machine assembly is a very complex procedure and employees have to comply with strict checklists, which serve to coordinate the different working steps and ensure safety. The new milling unit must pass through numerous quality stations before it reaches the final inspection and

each employee is responsible for a specifi c assembly step, becoming an expert in what he or she does. The fi rst milling process is also performed in this location. Only after the execution of the fi nal checks and tests is the equipment ready to leave the production site, moving on to the on-site logistic department. A selection of glass cases, which the clients can choose from to personalise their equipment, is also available in Premolaris.

INAUGURAL DENTAL CARE PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING GROUP

Are you interested in taking on a trailblazing and challenging project?

Den-Tech are working on creating a pilot dental professional network (DCP Network) group that will be coming very soon in the East Midlands.

The purpose of this exciting new project will be to bring dental care professionals ( dental therapists, dental hygienists, dental technicians, dental nurses, dental practice managers, and administrators/ receptionists) together in a safe and supportive environment.

Ideas can be shared, and information can be gathered with the purpose of helping to improve dental care and support for dental professionals in our local areas. You will be able to have a say in and share new developments coming from the NHS leadership (integrated care boards - ICBs, local dental networks - LDNs and managed clinical networks - MCNs).

You can help share information with practices, promote the inclusion of all dental

care professionals in leadership, and help to shape the future of dentistry.

This will be a pilot with the endeavour to branch wider. The idea is that we will be fl exible and innovative and will be looking for new and fresh ideas.

Den-Tech will be searching for two enthusiastic and dedicated people, working as a team, to act as interim cochairs, supported by leadership fellows and the LDN, to create and develop the network group from the ground up. The time commitment will be fl exible with a need for preparation for and attendance at meetings shared by the two co-chairs. The roles will initially be open to all dental care professionals.
