C H A M PAGN E

C H A M PAGN E POL ROGER ; H A N D C R A F T ED SI NC E 18 49 Champagne Pol Roger has been producing exceptional champagne for over 165 years. To this day the house remains small, family-owned, fiercely independent and unrivalled in its reputation for quality. Indeed, it is this quality which brought about Sir Winston Churchill’s lifelong attachment to Pol Roger, who famously insisted “In defeat I need it, in victory I deserve it”. Maison Pol Roger owns 91 hectares of vineyards on prime sites in the Vallée d'Epernay and on the Côte des Blancs. Its cellars run for 7km and are on three levels, the deepest known as the ‘cave de prise de mousse’ at 34m below street level. As the name suggests this is where the wine undergoes its secondary fermentation in bottle. The fact that this deep cellar is at 9°C or less, rather than a normal cellar temperature of 11–12°C, prolongs this fermentation and contributes to the quality and particular style of the wines and their famously fine bubbles.

{26} Pol Roger Brut Réserve

Champagne

NV

£12.00 £65.00 £110.00

Non-Vintage The definitive house-style, composed from 30 still base wines drawn from at least three vintages, and the three varieties of Champagne, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier blended in equal portions. The Pinot Noir comes from the villages of the Montagne de Reims and contributes body and character; the Chardonnay comes from Epernay itself and the Cote des Blancs and provides lightness and elegance; the Pinot Meunier comes from the Vallée de la Marne and provides youthfulness and vigour. The perfect apéritif champagne which we never release until it is at least three years old.

{27} Pol Roger Brut Réserve Vintage Champagne 2009 £85.00 Delicate pale lemon. The nose is opulent in its youth displaying ripe stoned fruits on the nose, candied lemon peel and grapefruit. Creamy autolytic mouth feel with a refreshing backbone of acidity. The wine has a persistence of length and character. The wine is more accessible in its youth compared to vintage 2008, but will last for the next decade and onwards.

{28} Pol Roger Brut Réserve

Champagne 2008 £100.00

Vintage Rosé The bright pink colour glitters with a lively stream of fine and persistent bubbles, presaging the delicate mousse on the palate. The initial nose offers fine aromas of raspberry and redcurrant; if allowed to develop in the glass, the wine reveals notes of wild strawberry bolstered by the seductive and characteristic scents of Pinot Noir. On the palate the harmonious blend of red fruit notes carries through, offering an outstanding balance of freshness, supported by some hints of citrus fruit, as well as a rich structure. The wine has a great, generous texture in the mouth, the elegant structure complemented by intensity of flavour.

On cooler days a warm layer is recommended. When considering footwear please be aware our grounds can be damp or uneven.

23

24

Can we look around the house if we are not dining in the restaurant? The house is open two hours before the start of the show. Enter under the main portico into Lady Ashburton’s shop and gallery featuring artist in residence Jessica Holmes. Take a walk through the central corridor of the house to view Rick Guest’s monumental portraits of the stars of the Royal Ballet and Studio Wayne McGregor. Climb the stairs to the first floor to view the centrepiece of Rick’s exhibition. Jane Gordon Clark’s bronze casts of Ed Watson will also feature in the house as part of Art@TheGrange with Duncan MacAskill exhibiting around the grounds.

I or one of my guests has mobility issues. Will this be a problem? Unfortunately, our site is not easy for people who have difficulty walking. If you or a member of your party has restricted mobility we suggest you make use of our buggy service to transport you from the carpark to your destination on the festival site. If you have severely restricted mobility we can also arrange a permit to allow you to make use of our drop off zone and reserved car park which must be booked in advance. The portico, theatre terrace and restaurant entrances all have wheelchair ramps and all our toilets are accessible. We also have two wheelchairs available to borrow. If you would like to book either a drop off permit or the use of one of our wheelchairs, please contact Caroline in the office on 01962 791 020 or email caroline@thegrangefestival.co.uk

What will I be able to purchase on the day? You will be able to buy drinks at the Pol Roger Champagne Bar upon arrival, as well as tea and coffee, homemade cakes and other drinks down in The Garden Bar. We also have a Festival Shop where you can purchase The Grange Festival mug and programme, along with a selection of books and stationery, scarves and jewellery, and the pieces from Art@The Grange. Payment can be made by card, cash or cheque.

Do I have to pre-book a table in the Marquee? It is advisable to pre-book your tables as we may not be able to offer space on busy performances. If you wish to turn up on the day, available spaces will be charged at ÂŁ10 per person. Cutlery and crockery must be pre-booked.

What happens if it rains? Although we do everything in our power to provide beautiful sunshine, standing under the Grecian portico on a rainy day while enjoying a glass of champagne can be just as magical as the brightest of summer days on the estate. Our festival will not be dampened by the weather. The award-winning theatre is entirely enclosed, our fine-dining restaurant is located within the magical interior of the house and we have enough marquee space to keep everyone dry.

Where can I stay? If you would like to explore Hampshire's New Forest then try Limewood for a special experience. Please visit our website for full details of where to stay: www.thegrangefestival.co.uk/where-to-stay
