Top flight golf Southwest Kansas blessed with top-quality, variety of golf courses By BRETT MARSHALL The Garden City Telegram
It’s been nearly 45 years since the first public 18-hole golf course was constructed and opened in southwest Kansas. Since then, at least five more golf courses have come into existence to provide a quality experience for area residents and visitors to the area. The first to venture into the 18-hole golf course operations occurred with the City of Dodge City when Mariah Hills Golf Course opened its first
tee in 1974 on the west side of the Boot Hill Capital in an area where there are gently rolling hills. Mariah Hills was designed by Colorado architect Frank Hummel, who two years later would design and then have opened Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, seven miles south of Garden City in the sand hills area that parallels the Arkansas River. It would be another three years before Earl C. Brookover Sr., who donated the land upon which Buffalo Dunes was built, developed Southwind Country Club, which fully opened to membership play in late 1979 and early 1980. club was renamed The Golf Club at Southwind. In the 1980s, Dodge City Country Club, originally built as a 9-hole layout in 1916, purchased land next door and added nine more holes to its facility. Ulysses’ Bentwood Golf Course, another original 9-hole layout, became an 18-hole facility in the late 2000s when then superintendent Jeff Kreie designed a links-style 9-holes to go with the traditional tree-lined, small and undulating front 9 holes. So today, nearly four-plus decades later, southwest Kansas is blessed with a number of excellent 18-hole courses. Buffalo Dunes and The Golf Club at Southwind have been the annual host courses for the Southwest Kansas Pro-Am, a late summer men’s professional tournament that brings many up-and-coming golfers to compete for a large purse. Proceeds from the tournament, which began in 1980 and was also conducted in Dodge City and Liberal the first two years, now goes to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at St. Catherine Hospital. Through the years, more than $1 million has been raised

In late August of each year, the Kansas Golf Association brings its Senior Series to the area, with one-day events played at Dodge City Country Club and then the two courses in Garden City. That is followed by the two-day weekend High Plains Amateur, which has been played at Southwind since
its inception in the 1990s, but will be played at Mariah Hills in 2018. The KGA’s plan is to rotate the tournament among the courses in Dodge City and Garden City in the future. Mariah Hills, Buffalo Dunes and Southwind also have hosted numerous Kansas high school boys and girls state championships, as well as other summer junior and senior KGA events. Southwind also has hosted
the prestigious Kansas Men’s Amateur Match Play Championship on four occasions, most recently in 2016. With elevations roughly between 2,500 and 3,000 feet in southwest Kansas, golf courses are maintained at a high level thanks in part to a drier climate, warm days and cool nights that provide good growing conditions for the cool-seaSee Golf, Page 69

son grasses of bent and blue. Currently, Buffalo Dunes’ head professional is Jason Hase, hired in the summer of 2017. He brings a lengthy career as a club pro and is a highly-regarded teacher and player. The superintendent, Clay Payne, is a Cimarron native and came to his home area in early 2017 and has a solid education and course experience at facilities prior to his arrival at the Dunes. Southwind’s head professional is Garden City native Cole Wasinger, who formerly served as the head pro at Buffalo Dunes for eight years before moving over to the private club, where he also serves as the general manager. Casey Sullivan is the superintendent who maintains the unique all-bentgrass fairways, tees and greens course. Both Garden City golf courses have been ranked on a variety of magazine top courses in Kansas, and Mariah Hills also is highly-regarded by the golfing community in western
Kansas. Chris Thompson, who also serves as the head coach at Dodge City Community College, is the head professional at Mariah Hills. That leaves an abundance of 9-hole facilities that dot the landscape in nearly every small community of southwest Kansas. Years and years ago, most of those courses were sand green facilities, but now nearly all are grass greens. There are 9-hole courses in Johnson City, Syracuse, Tribune, Leoti, Scott City, Dighton, Lakin, Cimarron, Kinsley, Greensburg, Meade, Jetmore, Montezuma, Satanta and Hugoton. With four seasons of weather, the typical golf season begins in March and runs through late October and even into early November most years. But the months of December, January and February, on certain days with temperatures in the 40s to low 50s, and if the wind doesn’t blow, there are plenty of opportunities to play in the “off-season.” Southwest Kansas provides ample opportunities with a wide variety of course layouts to test the skills and provide recreational opportunities for golfers of all ages and expertise.

Lake Scott, HorseThief Reservoir bring water recreation to plains of southwest Kansas By AMBER FRIEND The Garden City Telegram
In a region defined by infinite stretches of plains in all directions, it’s easy to write off the landscape as beautiful but homogenous. Two of southwest Kansas’ more notable water features, Hodgeman County’s HorseThief Reservoir and Scott City’s Lake Scott, challenge that assumption, offering a unique turn on natural Kansas beauty. At HorseThief Reservoir, the name of the game is activity. The lake is open for swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing, jet skiing, sailboating and windsurfing, and the nonprofit group Friends of HorseThief rents kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddle boards. The park around the lake offers camping for tents and RVs, cabin and yurt rental, archery, disc golf, hunting and trails for hiking and biking. As the day winds down, visitors can watch what the park claims are the best sunsets in Kansas. Fishing is allowed year-round with motorized boating restricted to fishing only and no wake speed. Bluegill, channel cat and largemouth bass are plentiful. A nature trail offers bird watching, biking and hiking opportunities. The 360-acre wildlife area offers opportunities for dove and quail hunting, and deer, turkey, rabbit and some waterfowl also inhabit the area. The Meade Fish Hatchery is located west of Lake Meade, and tours are available by appointment by calling (620) 873-2701. Clark State Fishing Lake HCO 1 Box 58, Kingsdown (620) 369-2384 Website: www.ksoutdoors.com/KDWPT-Info/ Locations/State-FishingLakes/Southwest-Region/ Clark Clark State Fishing Lake features a 300-acre impoundment, with a maximum depth of 42 feet and average depth of 17 feet. It is located in scenic Bluff Creek canyon surrounded by 900 acres of public hunting. Camping, picnicking and fishing are allowed. Red-headed woodpeckers, white-breasted nuthatches, and other woodland birds are found along the Jay R. Wood Memorial Nature Trail.

to hold events once a month. This summer, the park will present HorseThief: The Festival, a two-day red dirt country music festival organized by Rocking M Radio. The weekend event, beginning Friday, June 8, includes concerts, vendors, a mud volleyball tournament, and a 5K run on the reservoir dam. During Pack the Park, the park’s July 4 event held at the end of June, a fireworks display over the lake caps off a day of activities, including a bike rodeo for young visitors and decorated campsites. Come October, Friends of HorseThief also offers Wild West Zombie Paintball at the park every Friday and Saturday night. Mihm said, in a lot of ways, the park was still blooming. “We’re the newest park in Kansas right now and just in our eighth year of camping, so everything is still new,” she said. “We added 15 new shade structures and numerous trees. We’ve planted a lot of trees. I think it’s

… kind of quaint and everyone knows each other.” While Horsethief emphasizes its newness, Lake Scott State Park highlights its history. The park is home to several historic sites and landmarks, including the Steele Home, the stone house of some of Scott County’s first permanent settlers; the National Historic Landmark, El Quartelejo, which is the most northeastern known Native American pueblo; and, directly south of the park, Battle Canyon, the site of Kansas’ last Native American battle. The park itself has natural springs that feed into the lake and hosts of trees planted over 100 years ago. “You know, it’s in the middle of nowhere and all of a sudden you drop into this little valley
and it’s its own little oasis,” said Greg Mills, park manager of Lake Scott State Park. “If you come in here, you’ll never see another place like this. I mean, a spring-fed lake in western Kansas? That blows most people’s minds.” The park offers cabin rental and over 150 RV and tent campsites, along with hunting areas and trails for hiking and horseback riding for campers that bring their own horses. The lake itself is a not a recreation lake, meaning any motorized boats are for fishing only, Mills said. Swimming is allowed in designated areas, and the nonprofit Friends of Lake Scott rents out canoes, kayaks and paddle boats, but no motor boats, jet skis or the like are allowed on the lake.
Mills said there’s plenty to do besides motorized lake activities. The rules make the place quieter and more peaceful, he said, and visitors can bird watch or search for wildlife or hike and bike through the camp’s trails. This summer, they’ll update their horse campground and open a nine-hole frisbee golf course. On the observation deck overlooking a spring, he said, visitors could sit and hear the sounds of a little stream running through the woods. “It sounds like you’re in Colorado…” he said. “There’s so many little, unique features about this place.” The park hosts OK Kids Day, where kids can experience and learn about the outdoors, in June; and Youth Waterfowl Day, where young people learn about trap-shooting, archery, predator calling and cooking, in the fall. Mills said that throughout the year, Lake Scott hosted baptisms in the lake, family reunions and weddings, adding a natural background to important life events. “I just want everyone to come out here and see what it’s all about,” Mills said. “I think it’s one of the greatest places in the midwest.”

Few traditions in southwest Kansas have roots as deep, or provide as many sporting opportunities, as hunting. The region is a treasure trove for hunting enthusiasts, with multiple hunting lodges, your pick of hunting ground and a wide array of game. Ring-necked pheasants, bobwhite quail, white-tailed deer, mule deer, Rio Grande
wild turkey and jackrabbits can be found throughout the area, according to the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism website. There are also multiple hunting-lodges throughout the area, including the Saint Peter and Paul School Lodge near Kinsley, and the Cecil’s Trails End Hunting Lodge near Minneola. prairie. There’s also the Wild Turkey Playa Wetland, located seven miles west and a mile south of Dodge City. It is comprised of 157 acres, 50 of which are playa wetland. The area is open to hunting by posted notice. Located east of Dodge City, the Stein Playa includes 117 acres, 73 of which are playa wetland, and the larger 700acre Herron Playa Wildlife Area features 160 wetland acres, 360 acres of native grass and 180 cropland acres. Like the Wild Turkey Playa Wetland, both are open to hunting by posted notice. In the Garden City area, there are a number of hunting lodges and hunting-guide companies. Riverside Ranch Outfitters, 2013 Pioneer Road in Garden City, offers coyote, rabbit, quail and deer hunts, as well European Shoots and custom hunts depending on availabil-

The Kepley Wildlife area is located five and a half miles south and six miles west of Ulysses and is managed as a public hunting area.
Primary hunting in the area includes pheasants, bobwhite quail, morning doves and rabbits. There are also opportunities to hunt white-tailed deer and mule deer. Further west, near Coolidge along the Kansas/Colorado border, the Cottonwood Flats Wildlife Area is located near the south bank of the Arkansas River, and was “obtained specifically for the purpose of
providing additional public hunting acreage in western Kansas and public access to the Arkansas River,” according to the KDWPT website. A wide variety of species can be hunted in the area, including rabbit, mourning dove, turkey, waterfowl, many different types of furbearers, ringnecked pheasants, quail, and both mule and white-tailed deer.

Summer Baseball Dodge City A’s Dodge City is home to the Dodge City A’s summer collegiate baseball team. The A’s play a 42-games schedule, starting in late May. They play in the eight-team Jayhawk League, which includes the Liberal BeeJays, the Hays Larks, The Derby Twins, the Great Bend Bad Cats, the El Dorado Broncos, the Haysville Aviators and the Oklahoma City Dodgers. Home games for the A’s are played at Cavalier Field and admission is free. The A’s compete to get to the National Baseball Congress Tournament in Wichita each year.

Garden City Wind Garden City is home to the Garden City Wind, a member of the Pecos League, a professional league comprised of teams from Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Cal-
ifornia. The Wind is in its fourth season of play, which begins mid-May and runs through early August. The team plays 29 home games in 2018 and plays teams from Roswell, N.M.;
Alpine, Texas; Santa Fe, N.M.; Trinidad, Colo.; White Sands, N.M. The Wind compete to play the division champion that includes teams from Arizona and California.
