“It is hard to have committed leadership when you have a divided followership”

A

fter a thorough evaluation and selection process for CSU to open its seat for a new University President, finally Dr. Anthony Makinano Penaso made his way to the position. His credentials are evident enough that he was the most deserving among the six of the applicants. Presenting his plans for the university paired with his unwarranted long experience in the academic administration during his stint in the Central Mindanao University (CMU) in Bukidnon, he was able to get the nods of the studentry, faculty and staff, and CSU’s Board of Regents. Undeniably, as he made his initial first weeks and months, some of the CSU students made keen observations in the way things are done his way. Later, tangible actions as expected that resulted from his impressive plans shed light to the satisfaction of the studentry. With his practical outlook in life, he just simply resolve everything to God. I did agree that with his faith in God, he embraced the Biblical passage in which God says, " apart from Me you can do nothing." Dr. Penaso adhered to the fact that good leadership emanates from God, and that he is completely dependent in His directions. With leadership, sometimes many of us did not fully grasp its full meaning in the real sense. It can be understood that one leads and the rest

are followers. What is a true follower? What makes a good follower? Being a follower according to the pessimists’ point of view means subjection and execution of an order a leader makes. Meanwhile, a proactive follower on the other hand, demonstrates a great respect and thinks a win-win solution, and at the same time gaining the trust and confidence of his leader. The most important characteristic of a follower is the willingness to tell the truth, a truth that speaks the voice of the majority and a truth that coincides with fair justice. A truth that leads to the uplifting of a unified school under the guidance of the moral values we have. But be reminded that the truth hurts. It’s a complex word full of power and pain. It can shutter one’s mind and aura to the extent it caused one’s downfall and seizure. However, followers who tell the truth and leaders who listen to it are an unbeatable combination. But this does not include the “extra-constitutional means” of questioning a duly public official on his credibility. However, there is one thing that totally confuses our young minds. In the principles of ideal followership, one must recognize the authority a leader possesses. A recognition that requires great respect given to the leader himself/ herself. Now then, can we be an upbeat follower and at the same time tailor our actions and beliefs to complement

with the leaders’ position? Or can we be just like the bamboo tree, which is able to change its side to the strung of the winds? Whatever is the answer, one thing is for sure, leaders need followers; followers too need their leaders. It’s a symbiotic process that is proven and tested since time immemorial. First impression lasts as they say, and with President Penaso's few steps have taken place, I perceived democracy with his shaping up of things. Before he showcased his mind to the students, he conducts consultations to gather opinions, and aside from that, he generously give recognitions to inspire purposely empowering them to become assured of their potentials as integrals to CSU. How do I look at Dr. Penaso as a President and as a leader is indeed worth emulating. True to this as well is his flair for reconciliation and unity within the University. As an Administrator, he firmly believes of the good establishments of good relationships. As a father and the head of the institution, his reach does not only cover the studentry but of course the faculty and staff as well. True to the saying, "it is really hard to have a committed leadership when these is a divided fellowship."

CSU’s Dance Phenoms grapple the title, ‘Sayaw sa Kinaiyahan 2014’ grand winner Ennocent John G. Comandante Dulimbay, a premier dance group of Caraga State University proved that they are one of the region’s finest culture and theatre arts guild after scrooling the award as grand winner in contemporary-ethnic competition, “Sayaw sa Kinaiyahan” during the 64th Adlaw Hong Butuan’s Forest Festival 2014 last July 29, 2014 at Robinson’s Place Butuan. The guild bested five tough contenders on the final round where two of the finalists were entries of the university’s dance group. Several video presentations were submitted and screened by the organizers and only five were chosen to perform during the grand finals. Lucky for Dulimbay dancers, it served as their ticket to join the said contest sponsored by the City Government of Butuan in partnership with the BalikKultura Caraga. They successfully hurdled the preliminary screening and jumped into grand finals where they showed their innate talents and emerged champions after. “Honestly, we never expected to win because of our short preparation. Undeniably, two weeks before the competition, everyone in the University was very busy because of the AACUP accreditation which took place last July 1419, 2014. And soon after this, the students need to prepare for the Prelim Exam in the last week of July, thus, we need to have

our rehearsals on weekend or on the very limited common time of the dancers during weekdays so as not to compromise their academics,” Prof. Adam Roy Galolo, the culture in arts director stressed when he was asked if they expected the team to win the competition. “But, maybe because of our dancers’ desire to win and to give honor to our University, they bagged the grand prize”, he added. They received cash prize and a trophy after the proclamation. By continuous support of the Culture and Arts office spearheaded by Mr. Adam Roy V. Galolo, the chairperson and the whole university, this will be the starting point for the Dulimbay Theatre Arts Guild to strive hard. “I would like to congratulate the Dulimbay members for the job well done. Moreover, I would like to thank Mr. Oscar Jose Fajardo, former Dulimbay member, for helping us in coming up with the winning dance piece. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage those CSU students who have exemplary talent in dancing to be part of Dulimbay,” Mr. Galolo concluded.

LCO facilitates Team Building Ennocent John Comandante Developing the essence of unity and teamwork among every organization in the university, and enhancing its five pillars are the main objectives why Armando Caballero Jr., the president, of the League of Campus Organization facilitated a teambuilding activity last July 26, 2014 at 12-5pm, at the CSU oval. “Strengthening Oneness through Teamwork and Springing up One’s Leadership” was the theme of the said activity which encourages 29 studentleaders from the Religious Organization Council (ROC), 32 from Service Oriented Council (SOC) and 25 from Board of Council for Fraternities and Sororities (BCFS) to invest their time and to socialize with their fellow leaders. “Teambuilding is really of great help for me. It is not all about fun; but also it is about meeting different people and how to socialize with them. There, we were able to impose unity to resolve challenges during the activity. As soon as you help each other and everybody is participative, problems are easily faced. There are lots of things I appreciate and I know within me that I have no regrets joining that simple yet memorable event LCO had conducted”, Jonefer A. Padalapat, Christian Ignition Ministry (CIM) said when he was asked about his insights during the conduct of the activity. The activity was solely facilitated by LCO officers and subordinates. “A good leader is a good follower because only a discipled leader can disciple others. Only a changed leader can change others. Thus, a good leader is a mirror of his follower”, Pres. Caballero uttered on his message before the activity ended. “Shalom, LCO”, he conduded.

TEACHER’S PAY INCREASE: Does it upsurge the Quality of Education too? Jeanmalry Paquibot

For

continued span of time, teachers’ salaries climbed, step by step from the traditional pay of their services. Teachers’ salary increases as they correspond to the length of service teachers’ have rendered. All over the nation, teachers recognized that the payment system is not satisfactory. On these recent years, teacher’s salary increase has been the meat of talks and has been a discussion of many. According to OECD (Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development), teachers are the backbone of the education sector and their salaries represent the single largest cost item in education expenditures. Salaries and working conditions play an important role in attracting, motivating and retaining skilled teachers. In many OECD countries, salaries of teachers are set centrally, often through collective bargaining. This study emphasizes that numbers of individuals nowadays were partly being attracted to take the teaching profession because of its ceiling salary condition. Advocates of performance pay often say that implementing it will attract more people to the teaching profession and make those in the profession work harder, according to Douglas Harris. This only states that the moment that the salary of teachers increases, it does not only attract young minds to go into teaching profession

however it also develop quality education for the students’ advantage because teachers would try hard especially those who are already in the service to give back the value of what they received in their teaching services. Harris added “I think the idea of changing the system is a good one; low salaries keep people out of the profession. We need a little more financial incentive.

nothing would be impossible and the country would surely be a globally competitive one. In today’s Philippine situation, there are a lot of issues that were left unseen and unfortunately as days, months and even years passed by, everything were forgotten and the calls of those in place are just a scream in the middle of dreams. Many nonsense issues were dealt bigger than the needs the poor and pitiful Filipinos.

It has been said that the increase of salary corresponds to the educational quality of the teachers to students as seen in the students’ performance. Yet, how will the Government determine the quality of education? According to Brad Jupp, leader of the Denver Public Schools pay for performance design team,” its pay system, ProComp, assumes that teacher performance and student outcomes can be evaluated objectively”. “We believe we can measure student learning with a degree of certainty,” Jupp told Education World. “The industry has to accept responsibility for its product.” Well, the government will not entrust all the care to one side but rather should extend a helping hand and take the responsibility as well to produce a quality education in the Philippines.

Where are the high level flat forms during those forgotten days? Other than considering those personality matters and revealing those circling and repeating issues, Filipinos should focus on how to solve alarming issues in many of the tributaries of our country. There is no perfect governance “as they always say but, there are always these good and hardworking people if those on top are trying hard to make it through.

The issue that is continually arising, is the progress of education as to its quality does go along with the increase in the teachers’ salary? If people on top and the people would work hand in hand to achieve such goal of quality education,

I SAW IT AS A REWARD Ennocent John Comandante

As

the semestral magazine, the Gold Panicles, which is the official student publication of our university was released, we braced ourselves for another round of comments. There were these feedbacks that we always hear that we positively consider challenges for improvement. These comments include the lay-out, pictures, magazine content and some clerical errors where we could no longer make it right, yet we promised to avoid them and make them better next time. Furthermore, when a student is asked about the school paper, the common complaints they have are: the articles have not met the professional standards, there are too many grammatical errors, or that they simply are not interesting enough. Some would say, these did not fit to the reader’s interest, making it a must not read. But because we are here for the school publication, still we have chances to develop ourselves in writing. Thus, this does not mean that the school paper is the right canvas to commit mistakes. The student publication expresses the students’

OPINION minds and student’s concerns. Even if a student doesn’t have the background on journalism, or even if he or she doesn’t have the flair in writing, being involved in the school’s publication can be an integral part of a college experience. As such, the student magazine is useful in many ways. It encourages the students to think and write, so it develops their skills and talent in writing. It also develops their power of thinking and strengthens their imagination. In this way, the general knowledge of the students increase making them acquire the habit of reading and writing. The school and college magazines also teach the students the value of cooperation and encourage healthy competition. It is the source of selfhelp and self-confidence for students. Last May 26, 2014 the task force of the publication managed to explain the content of The Gold Panicles scholarship proposal before CSU’s Academic Council Meeting. We were able to answer questions from the panelists yet saw no hopes on the process. Eyes started to show emotions. Mouths were zipped out. We failed on our attempt. It was turned down. “DO NOT MAKE THE PUBLICATION A BUSINESS”, they said. We headed back but instead became more aggressive preparing for the next comeback. Still, we are firm; we are committed to push through what we have already started. This issue is really bothering me and even if we successfully passed the presentation, still it marked a little dismay on my part, being one of the members of The Gold Panicles. I was able to share and give myself in the field of writing when I became part of the group. It was still as fresh as before; every time I imagined how to start to scribble on pieces of paper which I thought were my scratches. Eventually I realized that the so called “masterpiece” I have made were actually trashes, not even a mere scratch. I supposed to decline the offer or the chance to be a member since I promised to myself to surrender my being as a potential journalism enthusiast and focus merely on my academe for I knew that my articles have numerous grammar issues that even organization of ideas were hardly achieved. I felt pity on the pub side. It wasn’t my priority so I committed lapses which I did not intend to do. I even saw the publication as nothing; whether I submit or not, work or not it was just alright for me that I was still part of it. I only wanted to kill my time. Compared to other schools in the province, our student publication was given less attention. We were not given any incentives for our stayed-up-late paper

works yet we were being thrown with criticisms which until now, we believe is just natural, even if it hurts us too much and hits our other members’ ego. It is not easy to work over night just to beat deadlines set. It is never that easy to write quality outputs when you are stressed on your subjects and exhausted to deal with hard-to-get instructors. In other words, being in the publication is really a great challenge to those who wanted to be part of it. I personally experienced the challenge within the walls of the Gold Panicles’ office (the official student publication of this university). I was there when everything seemed so down and problems were head over heels; and the best and only thing to do which I thought to be the last choice was to say “hasta la vista” (until we meet), pack all your stuffs and leave the office for a good reason---to avoid being in the pressure cooker which we supposed were our cradle and as a good training grounds for student aspiring writers.Despite our situations as student-journalists, we were able to accomplish our tasks gradually but dutifully; one at a time even if we were dumped with academic requirements. We have to take major exams, pass projects, evaluate our grades and worst possibly as a result fail our course for this matter. after all, we were still being placed on the hot seat, less appreciated. Always, we are on the spotlight, on the headlines and on the mouths of our avid bashers that observe nothing but our mistakes. Seldom, few really appreciated our work which became our hint to propose for a scholarship for the betterment of the members of the publication.

I would have suggested to those persons to keep their sensitivity open for us, to do us a favor of showing empathy. I know for sure that all of them cared less of the things that kept our magazine release to delay. Maybe, we were to be blamed partly but I tell you, even if we submitted our assigned articles ahead of time or on time, we still cannot do something to released it as expected. In spite of the conflicts, I found the real joy when I saw my name published in the school magazine. I still see it as a reward. I don’t believe this would stop my eagerness to speak, to express, to encourage, to inspire others, and to fight for what I have started four years ago, but moreover, this I believe is a good new start to let everyone know the significance of my task and my colleagues’ part in this kind of work filled with challenges. Why not feel what we feel, aspire what we aspire for. Experience the challenge that we have been through. Just be what you want to be, if any of you want to be critical of our work. What matters most for us is that we have done our tasks and finished our race.

For the information of everybody, we are not making the publication a business. We are asking favor for our simple request. If they have to examine each and every detail of the story, they will realize that the proposal we strongly fight for is just a little reward from the administration. We sought help from them since we saw the nee.; We enjoyed nothing but restricted internet service, limited office supplies and skimpy area where we are situated. Despite these instances, we stood up for our commitment, partly because of volunteerism. If and only if they experienced things we have encountered like keeping ourselves patient just like when we were brawled out in the Budget Office and so did with the Supply Office, indeed one would abhor the experience we’ve been through. All of these we humbly accept with all our hearts. If somebody will try to do the same thing, I bet he/she would claim something a little in return, something we call as “reward”.

Special Treatment: A Way, Not to Equality Vanessa Ybañez

The issue does not only focus on the violation that they have done. As they were facing plunder and graft cases, Special Treatment that everybody was anticipating, also became an issue. At the place where the suspects of different cases are detained, there ‘s no proper bedding. It is also too crowded in which unbearable heat is inevitable. They also became more prone to diseases. Even their food to eat is something like not a food fit for humans. These are what most of the detainees are experiencing. Almost all of us know what kind of a regular jail we have here in the Philippines. But what is this? Based on the exclusive photo, from abs-cbnnews.com, of the detention room at PNP custodial center where senator Ramon Bong Revilla, one of the suspects of the Pork Barrel scam, now imprisoned, there is no way that one can say or even think that the person there is a defendant , for the place itself does not look like where a defendant should be.

A

lot of people may already have been aware that once a person has entangled himself to an offence against morality, that person is subject to criticism and being ostracized, even if he is rich or poor. It simply means that justice has served in this country-No exemptions, Only fairness. The question here is, is this thing really being practiced, specially here in our country? The Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam, commonly known as the Pork Barrel scam, became the center of talk among the Filipino people. Now who would have thought that the people, who

THE GOLD PANICLES

“Ang paggamit ng pasilidad sa detensyon ay naaayon sa batas bilang pagkilala sa prinsipyo ng makataong pagturing sa mga nasasakdal”, this is according to the Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. are said to be the suspects, involved in this crime are the people who swore to be trusted in the service of the Philippine government, the Senate Pres. Juan Ponce Enrile, Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla and Senator Jinggoy Estrada, including the so called Pork Barrel Queen, Janet Lim Napoles. They are said to be the ones allegedly pocketing multimillion in the funds from the pork barrel or simply the alleged brains behind the scam. This is truly an offense for they are violating what is written in the Republic of the Philippines’ Constitution, Article XI Section 1, that public office is a public trust. Public officers and employees must at all times be accountable to the people, serve them with utmost responsibility, integrity, LOYALTY and efficiency, act with patriotism and justice, and lead modest lives.

We cannot deprive the right of that person to be treated like a human but the thing is, are those people in the regular jails also having the same way, the so-called “humane treatment”. This is no longer just a humane treatment; this is obviously a special treatment. Even if there are those prisoners who are considered as high profile, there is a really significant difference on how they are treated compared to those who are just low profile inmates. Everybody knows what equality is. What makes it hard to realize is that few of the ones we chose and even elected to promote and to lead are also the ones making it impossible to achieve.

in first aid procedures and disaster preparedness; however, the attendance to these activities turned out to be low. These untrained volunteers slowly dragged the integrity of the CRCY. Aside from issues about commitment, the council is into financial difficulty. The low turnout of participation of the members during trainings and seminars are greatly caused by the fact that it is not free. Moreover they lacked equipment for first aiding and disaster responding. The first aid kits, spine board, ice, buckets, and other equipment they have at present are financed by their membership fee and solicitations from some benevolent benefactors. The small faction of committed members inside the council truly deserves commendation. They help other people, students in particular, without thinking of anything in return. The students’ attitude towards the CRCY is due to undetermined functions between first aider and medic, and that they are volunteers and not employees.

“Always First, Always Ready, Always There” an ideal motto embodying the Philippine Red Cross’ resolution to commit and provide quality life-saving services that protect the life and dignity of Filipinos in vulnerable situations. A motto that is hard to live with and to transform from vision into action. A number of students from the campus come together to offer their services to partake in this patriotic vision. They are the Caraga State University main-campus College Red Cross Youth (CRCY) Council. The council basically aims to develop students the spirit of humanitarianism and social services; and this objective requires volunteerism, volunteers with passion and genuine intentions.

During the University Intramural Celebration, the LCO, along with its other school activities which expected a huge number of participants, made the CRCY recognized serving as first aid response team. They are responsible to assist application of first aid procedures to fainted and injured participants during the activity. Last Intramurals 2014, several expectators and participants in various events, especially during cheer dance competition and running events, got injured and fainted, and it’s a good thing the CRCY is there to assist them. However the responses they clinched were somehow a retort and unfavorable. The efforts of those who commit to their duty were not paid off after garnering more criticisms in lieu of thanks. Looking at the bigger picture, Rally Jay Naife, a senior member of the assemblage, stated that out of their more than 200 registered members, the number of committed members barely hit the 50 percent stripe. The CRCY conducted orientations, seminars and trainings to inspire the members’ teamwork, knowledge, and capability

Prevention is better than cure. It is also essential that the colleges should provide their athletes proper training and equipment to avert injuries during their sport events, their athletes should participate, and that the University should furnish well ventilated venue that can accommodate the number of participants for school activities, Also the clinic, as well as the school medics must be available at all times especially during enormously attended activities; and that athletes and working committees should be aware of our health conditions and limitations. In the end, there’s no one who knows us better than ourselves. The blame is still incorrigibly on us because our health is our own responsibility.

PURE SERVICE POLICY ONLY: MAKES SENSE Marie Claire O. Virtudazo

THE GOLD PANICLES

OPINION

“Pure Service Policy Only’, “No violence, No harm” or “Service to the people and for the community” definitely captured attention of an individual about an implementation by one of the existing organizations in the university to recruit members or neophytes. This is all about the fraternities or fraternal organizations which added to the building blocks of extra- curricular activities of the students. Absolutely there is a change of perspective and views of the studentry about the change of process of recruiting members to be part of the so-called “brotherhood and sisterhood relationship or the “One for all, All for one” that serves as the common motto of any fraternal organization. Questions that will be somehow be injected to students' minds would be like this ,”Does it make a great difference with its commitment and acceptance compared to the usual initiation process? Or Does the word “hazing" be primarily dissolved or casted away? On the school year 2014-2015, the pioneering batch who popularized the pure service policy only had implemented it. The first activity they did was the Campus Clean-up or Environment Service Activity which our common sense would tell us that it’s similar to a DoDay. Another is obeying the commands and doing the task or situations given by the Fraternity officers. According to the facts gathered it limits to silly and

foolish activities and that neophytes are not subjected to psychological torture or physical abuse according to a Grand Officer of a fraternity. It’s a way of testing the determination of the socalled “pledgee” before they can claim themselves neophytes. It portrays a big change for the thoughts built in the mind on the usual mode of recruitment. Hazing is primarily accompanied with injury, emotional suffering, violence, harm, danger, or even death in order to make sense of gaining brotherhood and mutual benefits. An internet source says that there exists a fraternity organization whose primary purpose is “Community Service”. It is termed as Service Fraternity and Sororities (North American Student Fraternity System)..What the fraternities in the campus had implemented maybe is based on the rules of this. The only difference is the term “service only” that serve as an instrument to recruit members to be part of the organization. The recognition of fraternities had paved a way with the cooperation of the League of Campus Organizations. The laws required permission of the LCO in whatever activities that will be conducted by the organization. Prior information and permission are highly recognized. Facts gathered figured out that the reason behind its implementation is a policy which is governed by the LCO that service only must be highly conducted and thus no hazing shall occur. “By abiding the rules of the LCO, the orgaization implemented the service only policy in which the main goal is for the students to know that any fraternity does not necessarily harm neophytes and that they do not initiate hazing. In fact organizations aim to maintain their good image in this institution”, stressed out by the campus chapter president of the Alpha Zeta Omega.

is not the main goal only of building fraternities, there would always be unity, trust, friendship and acceptance for any person to be involved socially. It definitely drives an encouragement for the students to engage in a fraternal organization where they can’t feel and experience harm, physical and moral violence, and most of all, loss of life .Good that some fraternities in CSU conduct service and allowed this policy to be the preferred mode of recruitment and thus hazing for them is a big NoNo. The tradition had been changed but we couldn’t change the facts that still in the television , newspaper and internet, the traditional initiation procedure had never been vanished and there are still students and individuals who risked their lives before they gain access in the organization. Service only allows a wide spread of encouragement. If the fraternities will have good deal with the people, it will continue to be part of their lives and existence and these will never be banned with the legal premises of the institution. However will service last long or will the other fraternities continue to practice this policy as another school year approaches? Or will the ‘hazing dilemma” never be lost in the track and still be the means of gaining members since it’s the tradition ever since practiced by the frat founders. But the most important is fraternities will still keep their promise and live according to their constitutions and by laws; practice their noble ideas and continue to abide the rules for the betterment of the organizations' existence.

The fact that service only had been conducted according to him in which equality and acceptance don’t make any difference at all compared to the traditional “hazing or paddling’. Service

The President’s Tweets I

would like to take this opportunity to commend the responsible students behind this student organ “The Gold Panicles” for upholding the student’s right to freedom of expression. Just like any other right, which may be inherent or legislatively provided for to an individual, it comes with great responsibility. Thus, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that it is not freedom of expression when it is not exercised along with the principle of fairness and prudence. Young as you are, you have all the creativity and vigor to go beyond the fortress of your limitations to stand out among others. This gives you the edge to do something that is not only good, but one which is meaningful because it touched and uplifted the lives of others. Take advantage of your talent in writing to further the cause of transforming our society for the better. Draw inspiration from what our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal said, that “the pen is mightier than the sword”. Taking this at the context of being students of this University, as writers who are guided with the principles of journalism, let it be known what lies in your hand is the privilege to make your legitimate concerns be noticed, heard and acted upon by authorities.

Indeed, the aforementioned are giant leaps which seemed unattainable during my term, but let me stress that when I envisioned those, I did not make them dependent and centered on my existence in this University. Let it be known that such goals are all threaded by one ultimate dream that is to make quality and competitive education accessible to you who are humanity’s hope in the future. Again we may not be able to realize everything, at least we can build the foundation towards their full realization in the near future. and that will be our selfless legacy to the people of this region for the glorification of God.

Pesting buhay naman ‘to!”

Are you playing for the sake of your scholarship or your commitment as an athlete?

Honestly, I am a sports enthusiast myself and a die-hard fan of a sports icon. But as to a part in this wonderful and challenging nerve-breaking activities - as sports, I questioned myself: Is there really something in our CSU Athletes that keep them going that I do not have? What keep them doing this tiresome routine? Only to find out their answers made me convinced that they are worthy to be featured out. Here it is...

Mark Joserie C. Grana BSA- III Football I am playing for my scholarship because this sustains my studies and at the same time, it is my commitment to play football. Football is my life and one of my dreams is to be an international player someday. Trace C. Tero BSGE- II Arnis I am playing not because of my scholarship but because this is my commitment. I love to play Arnis. I am playing for the name of the school and to be an inspiration to others. Joshua U. Petalcorin BSIT- II Sepak Takraw I am thankful that I availed the scholarship because of Sepak Takraw but I am not playing just for this; I am playing because it is my commitment. Even if my parents won’t support me, I still continued playing this sport. This is my vice, my way to improve my skills. Miguel Reponoya BSF- IV Athletics I am playing because of my commitment. I play for the love of running.

Carmina Mae L. Ferrer BSIT- III Volleyball I am playing for the sake of the scholarship. But, also I do love to play volleyball for enjoyment and to spend time together with my friends and team mates. Chris Valentino O. Cebrian BSES- II Taekwondo I am playing for the sake of my commitment because I am a devoted athlete. I am determined to be at my best. But because I am still a student, I am also doing this for the sake of my scholarship. Jennifer G. Manliguez BSIS- III Taekwondo I joined TKD for the sake of losing weight but as time goes by, I started loving this sports. I can say now that I will do everything just to stay in TKD. Though we have individual perspective, we train as a team, we work as a team and we fight as a team. I play because it is my commitment. Ennocent John G. Comandante

SWEEPING THE ROAD CALLED LIFE

By: John Francis Cadampog

She said with a smile, “Kay tigulang naman ko magsilbi na pud na exercise sa akong kaugalingon ning akong trabaho ug ako man pud ning kagustuhan.” Her commitment to do her job is implicitly expressed by positively considering her work beneficial to her present age. According to her, at the age of 46 she already started in service when Dr. Gloria Magdale became the OIC School President. She was designated as a road sweeper. Later she was transferred as utility personnel as recommended by Dr. Natividad Mamaoag in the College of Arts and Sciences where she rendered ten years in service “Lisud mangita ug trabaho sa akong edad karun, labi na kay wala ko’y nahuman mao kini na trabaho maagwanta ra tungod sa kalisud og para sa akong pamilya ug dako na pud akong pasalamat sa Ginoo,”

“Kung naa pa tana lain trabaho, pero tungod sa akong pagka edaran kini ra man ang paagi para mabuhi nako akong pamilya” This was the statement of the 65-year old utility personnel of Caraga State University named Mrs. Bening”Nang Bening” Baryoga-a native of Zamboanga Del Norte who recently resides in Ampayon, Butuan City with her family. Though only a few can notice, she wakes up at five o’clock in the morning and gets ready to start her routine. I do the same morning routine like that of Manang Bening but we obviously differ in what we do. While I jog around the CSU oval, Nang Bening on the other hand does her job. Even though she’s distant, her identity is easily recognized being the only lady utility holding a long-wooden broom, who wears a cone-shaped hat, and doing her job frequently sweeping the street from the main gate to general services area.

THE GOLD PANICLES

Teary eyed, she stated it like she’s left with no other way but sacrifice for her family. Nang Bening also added that she was inspired by Engr. At a rate of PhP 344.00 per day, she stresses that her salary is not enough to provide for her big family’s need. Fortunately for her, she experiences some of her blissful moments in the university with some of the generous people she encounters. She shared a story about a kindhearted instructor who gave her a late Christmas gift containing a big pack of milk and two pieces of towel. It was an unforgettable happiness she has ever felt. Although she was hoping for salary increase, Manang Bening still expresses her job satisfaction mainly because of having a pleasant working environment which for many is hard to find. She’s just one of those people who are highly committed in serving the university leading us to a better change. Indeed, the university will not be successful without the presence of committed personnel like Manang Bening.

ASAL

Ang Sa Amin Lang Naman. . .

Ohhh..my.. G! At sa wakas, nararamdaman ko nang, “This is it, I’m back!” Sa aking enggrandeng pagbabalik, di maaaring walang bonggang isyu akong bitbit—still on duty pa kaya ito. Huwag magtaray, dala-dala ko’y nakaka-okray. At bago ako magsimula… Bato-bato sa langit ang tamaan, huwag magalit! “Peace be with you,” ika nga. . . kahit nga visitor ka lang, oh diba! VERY APPROACHABLE – sila iyong lalapit sa iyo). Well, balik tayo sa pagpasok natin. Pagpasok mo’y kitang-kita na kaagad ang CSE, CASNR, at CEIT building ngunit lakad pa ng kaunti, mapapansin kaagad ang NSB na mala-hunted building na sa kalumaan (I’m referring to the room doon banda sa may Com. Lab.). Palagi lang naman siyang ‘on or off’ kung tatrabahuin.) But wait…wait… Oh—my—G!
