Welcome! Hope you have all enjoyed the wonderful weather we’ve been having, the Spring beauty perhaps even more precious juxtaposed against the horrors of Ukraine. In this issue we spoke to the Excelsior Trust, which takes people out to sea on a century old wooden sailing trawler, a smack, from Lowestoft or Ipswich. We also spoke to Wendy Weale of Enterprise Improvements about training people to be first class coaches, and we set up a fab competition with Kofra, our favourite coffee shop, so that a lucky reader can win a £25 voucher. We also talked to the charming Charlie Webster of Websters Estate Agents. Behind the scenes very fab designer Niki Medlik came up with a much needed new logo for us. It’s golden: it points (or guides) the way. As ever please mention that you use The Golden Guide to anyone/ any business whose ad you see in these pages. Until the next issue, then, which is June/July.

The Excelsior Trust Every now and again The Golden Guide is approached by a truly exciting charity. For example, the Excelsior Trust, who got in touch earlier this year. Founded in 1988, the Trust organises sailing experiences on board a 101-year-old Lowestoft built sailing trawler, The Excelsior. To date, around 10,000 people have been taken out to sea with her. It’s a massive number of people – taken from all walks of life, of all ages. Who could ever forget the hands-on experience of navigating a ship under sail? Or – for those enjoying a residential experience in one of the ship’s 12 berths – doing night watches out on the wild seas? But taking people out to sea is only part of the Excelsior Trust’s remit. Let’s back track. In 1982, John Wylson and Mark Trevitt bought the world-weary trawler home from Norway, where she had spent the years 19541972. The Lowestoft duo began a huge restoration project. Luckily, they were able draw on the significant body of knowledge still existing in Lowestoft in the 1980s, from the decades in the first half of the 20th century when the town had been the largest trawling station in the UK, and the last fishing station to operate large smacks. George Prior Engineering kindly made available facilities in one of their yards, and under a manpower services commission work experience scheme a team was put together. (A total of 117 people went through the scheme with the majority going on to full time employment.) By 1988, the 77’ smack was fully restored to original condition. At this stage, the Princess Royal recommissioned her as a sail training vessel, and The Excelsior Trust was founded. The ship was made available for use by the local community and was to provide sail training for young people, such as those involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. On land, the knowledge garnered from the ship’s restoration provided the basis for the Trust to subsequently restore – and at times sail - other historic vessels (for example the Yarmouth Shrimper, Horace and Hannah). In recognition of the important of the vessel to the local community, Excelsior was awarded, in her 100th year the Freedom of the Town of Lowestoft. The first time this had been done to an inanimate object! Alongside helping to challenge and develop young people, the Excelsior Trust is committed to making the vessel accessible to a wider community. During her sailing season (April to October), she is docked at Lowestoft’s Heritage Quay, where members of the public can go and look around. A busy programme includes day sails and holidays (ranging from 3 – 8 days) for both groups and individuals, as well as private hire for special events, and venue hire for films. At the time of going to press Excelsior was being filmed by BBC’s The Antiques Road Trip for their Autumn season. There are sails from Lowestoft to London, Summer Solstice Dawn Voyages, sails along the Orwell from Ipswich, six-day trips to Ostend and beyond. (The full programme is on the website). For more information on The Excelsior Trust visit the website on www.theexcelsiortrust.co.uk or call 07821 281950

DISCOVER LIVING HISTORY ABOARD AN ICONIC EXAMPLE OF MARITIME HERITAGE Excelsior, the 101 year old Lowestoft sailing trawler, one of the few remaining in the UK, is a familiar sight off the East Anglian coast. One of the nation’s 60 most important historic ships, this award-winning traditional wooden sailing vessel, authentically maintained, offers individuals and groups the opportunity to experience a very different way of life, far removed from that on land. All on board are treated as part of the crew, gaining hands-on experience of navigating a ship under sail, taking watches at night and living at close quarters with like-minded people. We promise an adventure which can involve hard work if you wish but, most of all, fun! Holidays and day sails are ideal for both individuals or groups. Daysails are available from Lowestoft and Ipswich and holidays range from 3-8 days and include destinations around the UK and Northern Europe. Websters Estate Agents

For the past decade, family-run business Websters Estate Agents have been making a name for themselves. We caught up with Charlie Webster the week that the agency announced they had acquired Langford Estates. Who are you?

We are Websters Estate Agents on Unthank Road, a family-run independent sales and letting business.

Why use Websters?

We are specialists in the Golden Triangle area dealing in every property from a lock up garage to a large Period family home. We have core traditions at the heart of everything we do but with the added benefits of digital online marketing and eye catching professional photography.

How long have you been going for?

We turned 10 this year! We can’t believe how quickly its gone. We’ve been through the inevitable struggles any new business has in its early stages but we have now firmly set our roots into the area and are set for a bright future. We started off with just myself and Emma but now have grown to 15 staff.

You’ve recently expanded to take over Langfords Estates? How will this impact you?

Langfords is our second acquisition after purchasing First Lettings Norwich last year. We have a growth strategy to build up our managed property portfolio and Langfords fit the bill perfectly. They are similar to us being a family-run business, and we shared many core beliefs in how an agency should be run, which we knew would make it easier for clients to transition over to us. They had many suitors but they chose us for the same reasons, so it was a great match. It significantly increases our properties under management and Websters now looks after over 500 properties!

How much of your business is in lettings and how much in sales?

We are about 50/50 now with the new lettings acquisition. It enables us to weather the difficult times an agency sometimes has and thrive in sales when the market is doing well, which we have seen over the last few years.

Your office is in the heart of the Golden Triangle. Does this mean you specialise in homes on this side of the city, or do you go much further afield?

Obvious our core property stock is in the Golden Triangle, local to our office on Unthank Road. However, we have been slowly increasing our coverage in recent years and now sell anywhere within Norfolk. We actually have as many houses outside NR2 & NR4 for sale as do within it so our name and reputation is spreading far and wide, which is great to see. A fellow estate agency owner once said to me that it was like a light bulb went off in people’s heads once they hit 10 years old and it seems that way for us too! It takes a while to gain a brand awareness, especially with so many competing agencies around

The Golden Guide LOVES your ads! Who designs them?

I do them myself! I think design/branding is my second calling but it bodes well when building a company brand. We must have been advertising with the Golden Guide for 10 years now too! My favourite advertising campaign was our last one with our staff being the face of the company and the slogan “Our staff are our biggest asset”. We truly believe that they are so important in how we do things. At the end of the day, buying/selling/ renting/letting a property requires a very personal service, and the right staff really do make the difference. If you’re in Chantry Place be sure to look up and see our massive billboard advert by the entrance to St Stephens Street!

And tell us about the local charities that you support…

We support as many as we can but would always like to do more. We are happy to be contacted by any charity or local fund-raising event where we will do our best to help out. Our 'Paint Your Rainbow' campaign during the first lockdown was a great success and each Christmas we donate money to a local charity. I’m also grateful to all the Norfolk Estate Agents who have come together for the Ukraine Appeal. We have had donated a full artic lorry load of items which will be delivered to the Ukraine people in need this month. Who knew that if Agents worked together collectively we can be even better!

Wendy Weal of Interface Improvement Wendy Weal is the human face behind the Norwich based company, Interface Improvement. We spoke to her about her work, and how she arrived at where she is. In a nutshell, what does Interface Improvement do? Basically, we train people to be effective coaches. If you want to develop skills in executive, business, or life coaching then we run exactly the course for you! And why coaching? I’m passionate – have always been passionate - about making a difference to businesses and organisations, and the individuals working within them. Coaching helps individuals improve their own performance. It’s about empowering the individual to extract the best out of his/ her life. Within businesses and organisations, coaching can be transformative, bringing about significant shifts of goals or focus areas. As a coach you are an enabler. Working with a client, you draw out multiple perspectives, and thought drivers around issues or goals. An effective coach sensitively mixes reflective listening, questioning and supportive challenge to lead the client forward. Coaching – and training people to be coaches – is an intensely satisfying job! There are so many skills you can bring to the table. In my case I also have training in neuro linguistic programming and am a qualified hypnotherapist. I am also training to be a psychotherapist because I love learning and using all those skills and knowledge to make a real difference. And how is the coaching training course that you run professionally recognised? We’ve developed what is known as a Level 6 Qualification in Coaching. That is a degree level qualification. The course has 27 credits which means that it is 270 hours over the programme including the face-to-face sessions, workshops, reading, assignments etc. The qualification is approved by OFQUAL who are responsible for the regulation of all qualifications. The course is 3 units covering principles and practices of coaching and mentoring, coaching for improvement and personal development for coaches. Evidence is gathered throughout the course making up a portfolio consisting of 3 assignments, a reflective journal, and evidence of 20 hours coaching experience. Where does training take place? Here in Norwich! (And the next course begins in June!). The course is run through: • An initial 5-day face to face interactive training course followed by • 2 follow up workshops (additional skills to be learnt) • a comprehensive assessment process over 10 months There will be plenty of opportunity to practice and all sessions are run by and experienced and accredited Coach/Tutor. Participants receive a workbook, tools and templates as well as full portfolio guidance. They are supported on a 1-1 basis throughout.

So, let’s put the Coaching aspect of your job in a wider perspective. What have you done to lead up to this place? Back in 2010, with 27 years of public sector work under my belt, I set up a training and consultancy company, Interface Enterprises. Its aim was to provide a national training, evaluation, and consultancy organisation to support those working in public services – such as children’s social care, education, police, housing. Today we are one the key leaders in our field. We’ve worked with businesses and local authorities all over the country and have provided training for over 132,800 participants in both skills based and accredited qualifications. And prior to that? I worked for the Department of Education, as Deputy Delivery Manager of the Family Delivery Team in the Families at Risk division! I had a national role in supporting local authorities set up and run intensive family support services, including parenting support and wider reforms around integrated services and whole family working. Often these were families with hugely complex social needs. I was also concerned with the development of local protocols between Drug/ Alcohol treatment services, Safeguarding Boards and Children and Family services, Offender Management services, Mental Health services and Young Carers. So I’ve had a long track record in helping others, and – I hope – making a difference. How do we find out more about Interface Improvement? You can have a look at our website www.interfaceimprovement.co.uk or you can call the office on 01603 251730

What’s On Norfolk and Norwich Festival, May 13-29.

If there’s ever a time to be in Norwich it’s Festival time. The 2022 Festival— celebrating its 250th birthday—offers much scope for post Covid revelry, contemplation and Arts’ immersion. As always, pick up a hard copy of the programme at the Forum etc, and go online to the website to make bookings. (nnfestival.org.uk). For a literary fix, check out Deception Island (Chapelfield Gardens, May 25-28). An exact replica of an Antarctic hut, Deception Island is a hybrid poetry/sound/ film experience. Also visiting the City Of Literature Weekend, Japanese novelist Mieko Kawakami talks at the Speigeltent about her third novel, ‘All The Lovers In The Night’ which follows the success of ‘Breasts and Eggs’ and ‘Heaven’. Great titles, great writing. At Dragon Hall over the same weekend, a Publishing Fair celebrates the vibrant publishing culture of East Anglia, and poetry and prose workshops tempt scribblers of all levels to pick up their pens or tap their keyboards. There’s also a ‘Wandering Words’ tour of Norwich, and much more. At Norwich Castle, Russian born artist Yelena Popova’s exhibition, Ode To A Flint, has been withdrawn owing to the war in Ukraine. Instead, the space will be filled with artists’ responses to the war. Further afield, King’s Lynn’s Groundworks Gallery shows Fieldwork, an exhibition about seeking and investigating, assembling and combining by the artist group, Haptic/ tacit. At Houghton Hall, John Virtue’s dynamic monochrome North Sea paintings take centre stage as part of their summer sho, whilst (also at Houghton) the James Turrell Skyspace installation opens later than usual, so we can all catch the transition from day to night (May 13 and 14). And don’t miss, over in Yarmouth, Yarmonics, a festival of sound and new music celebrating the people, places and space of the town.

Music is always well represented at the festival. There’s Compline by Candlelight at the Cathedral, 10 minute dance parties outside the Forum, and Radio 3’s New Generation Artists. At the Octagon Chapel late one evening—10 pm—there’s a chance to catch Swiss Albanian singer Elina Duni and British jazz guitarist Rob Luft in a complex words and music piece. No festival would be complete without some Spiegeltent fun. This year Le Gateau Chocolat and Jonny Woo will drag (of course) audiences through a cab- Rember Yahuarcani, Gods of the Water and the Sky, 2013 aret of musical hits, and Cirque Alfonse brings cabaret circus to the sounds of electro folk. Protest singer Grace Petrie gives audiences a mix of folk and politics on May 21, and mother and son—Peggy and Calum MacColl—sing, and chew the cud, on May 24. Thursday 28 April, n-CAS (Norwich Contemporary Art Society) lecture by Dr Giuliana Borca on Peru’s Contemporary Indigenous Art. The Forum, 7-9. A talk from Peru’s former director of Museums and Cultural Heritage on a subject few of us will ever have dwelt on —it looks interesting and quirky. John Link exhibition at Mandells Gallery, April 1-30. With a Shakespearean theme, Link’s pictures echo the years he spent working as a TV Producer and Director. Enigmatic and somehow quiet work. Amanda Owen, The Yorkshire Shepherdess, Theatre Royal. May 8 at 19.30 The woman’s amazing—nine children, home renovator, best seller author, TV doyenne, and shepherdess of a flock of 1000 sheep. How does she do it? Find out when she visits for one night only!

John Link: Viola .

Also at Theatre Royal, May 3-7, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Nighttime. The National Theatre’s acclaimed production returns to Norwich. Marianne Elliott directs; Mark Haddon wrote the original.

£10 off The Golden Cockerel and La bohème at Norwich Theatre Royal

Norwich Theatre is delighted to host The English Touring Opera for a weekend of opera (20-21 May) featuring its spring tour shows of La bohème (Puccini) and The Golden Cockerel (Rimsky-Korsakov). To celebrate this fantastic weekend of music and drama, Norwich Theatre has an amazing offer. If you buy both shows together, you will receive £10 off your ticket price for any seat in bands A-C. Since 1979, English Touring Opera has toured outstanding live productions and impactful education and community projects to more towns and cities than any other UK opera company. At the heart of their ethos is making exceptional artistic experiences available and accessible to everyone. Fantasy, mischief and musical delight combine in the lively new production of The Golden Cockerel, the final and favourite opera of Rimsky-Korsakov. The Golden Cockerel is sung in English rhyming couplets, and there are surtitles so that you do not miss the wit in this hilarious satirical comedy! Based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin, the opera is packed with the exotic orchestration that has made similar works such as Scheherezade so popular. A daring satire on the last days of the Romanov dynasty and imperial decline, The Golden Cockerel is as biting as it is charming. Puccini’s La bohème is a story of young love, opening on Christmas Eve in a Parisian garret, where two lovers meet on a snowy night. Told with the most memorable music, it is a classic tale of romance, friendship and mortality that captures the poetry and poverty of 19th century Paris. The show is in period dress and with poetic designs, sung in Italian, promises to break every heart and breathe joy into the spirit of everyone who has ever wanted love. Both these operas will provide devotees and those new to the genre with the stories, the music and the spectacle that can’t be missed. The Golden Cockerel and La bohème are at Norwich Theatre Royal from 20 – 21 May. Make it a weekend to remember by booking a spot in Norwich Theatre’s restaurant Prelude. Norwich Theatre's First-ever Co-production

At Norwich Theatre, we are very proud of the wide-ranging portfolio of work that regularly comes to our venues each year. To add to Norwich Theatre's programming, we have begun growing our portfolio of productions and co-productions to fill the gap in our county's cultural ecology. This includes our first-ever touring production, On Before, directed and performed by legendary Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta CBE. This year, Norwich Theatre has embarked on its first ever co-production, The Birds and the Bees, a brand new show set in East Anglia. The show is being co-produced with two other local theatres, The New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich and Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds and John Stalker Productions. James McDermott's new version of the 2016 Canadian play relocates from modern -day Canada to North Norfolk. The show is an hilarious comedy romp set on Sarah's East Anglian turkey farm where the honey bees are dropping like flies, just like her love life. The show tackles sex, love, science, family and what happens when you commit to those closest to you. Speaking about the Birds and the Bees, Stephen Crocker, Chief Executive & Creative Director of Norwich Theatre, said: "We are so excited about this first-ever coproduction with New Wolsey Theatre and Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds of Birds and the Bees, allowing us to pool the expertise and creativity of three of the East of England's best-loved theatres. It forms another important step in our aspiration to produce and coproduce more original work, re-affirming Norwich Theatre's commitment to giving a platform for new, different and local voices to be heard. "The spirit of determination and love for theatre unites all three venues, and The Birds and the Bees will offer audiences good light-hearted fun, which is just what is needed right now." The Birds and the Bees is at the Norwich Theatre Playhouse between 20 April – 30 April. For more information, call the Norwich Theatre Box Office on 01603 630000 or visit norwichtheatre.org.
