(Re: Home Base, Issue 205) Your recent diary serial about home organizing wasn’t written about me, but it could have been. The woman in the story (Malky) who wanted to organize her kitchen so it could function better could have been me! Like Malky, I love to have an organized kitchen, but like Malky, I’m on a tight budget. I was wondering if it’s totally k’neged halacha to use recycled boxes as containers instead of (as the article stated) “going on a container shopping spree.” I agree that containers are necessary for organization, and they do help keep my kitchen organized. But none of the bins I use were purchased. Whenever I need a container, I look around my house to find a box in the exact size I need. I might use a tissue box, an Amazon box or the box my new urn came in. I create custom-size boxes, too, by cutting the ends off a larger box and taping them together so I have a box that’s the perfect size for my items or space. The only “problem” with this system is that my containers don’t “match.” But as I said, they keep my kitchen organized to perfection, and I’m on a tight budget. So what’s the halacha? Is it mutar? We opened our siddurim and learned what we’re required to say and do when. Our skilled teacher gave us a vivid understanding of what goes on in Shamayim during Kedusha and taught us that properly answering amen aloud to Kaddish erases decrees of 70 years. We were also taught what to do during leining and how devastating it is to talk during Chazaras Hashatz. clearly recall the mashal she used to explain why it makes sense for us, small humans, to crown Hashem. She said that it’s like when you try on a wedding gown, and a three-yearold comments on how pretty you look. What could be more endearing than that? She also taught us to close our eyes during Kedusha and raise our face upward. Hashem looks down at that moment, which gives us the opportunity to make “eye contact” with Hakadosh Baruch Hu, kavayachol! Last but not least, we got extra points on our tests for each time we went to shul on Shabbos morning. (Re: The Organized Brain, Issue 204) I really enjoyed your article about “Blimi” and how she keeps her life organized. I feel like I made two new friends, both “Blimi” and the writer. I have to admit that I am more similar to the writer than to Blimi (though I never went to a wedding on the wrong night… yet). The article really inspired me to try to be a little more organized. I found a really great tool for that that I wanted to share with your readers. It looks like a spiral notebook, but instead of pages, it has plastic pocket folders. One folder holds this year’s school calendars for all of my children. When I need to schedule something, I have all of the calendars right there in one place. Another folder is for menus and grocery lists. I throw out the lists when I’m done, but keep the menus if they’ll be relevant for the future. A third folder is for all simcha invitations. I keep them in order with the soonest one on top, and throw it out after the event. It’s a small thing, but instead of having papers flying around everywhere, this spiral-folder-notebook has become my “organized brain”! Thanks for a great read every week. Perel S.

But from now,” Hashem said, “I’m giving you the power to bentch whomever you want.” The Midrash (Bereishis Rabbah 40:6) tells us that Hakadosh Baruch Hu told Avram that he should be a trailblazer, he should show his children the right way of living, and they would follow suit. As Chazal say, “Ma’aseh Avos siman l’banim.” The conduct of our Avos serves as Klal Yisroel’s model for all generations.

The contractor requested the first installment of $20,000 to get started. Mr. Green asked his wife to go down to the bank and withdraw the cash. While she was out, Mrs. Green decided to do some shopping. She held her pocket book tight, which held a bulging envelope containing a chunk of their savings. It was late by the time she arrived home, laden with shopping bags, and she sat down and happily told her husband about her purchases. “And where is the money?” Mr. Green asked. Mrs. Green jumped up to get her pocket book, but she didn’t come back. “PEANUT BUTTER” COOKIES Surprisingly, these cookies taste better after they have cooled, so resist the urge to eat them off the baking sheet! They also taste great straight from the freezer. Free of peanuts, tree nuts, coconut, eggs, dairy, wheat*, soy. Contains sesame. Yield: 2 dozen cookies INGREDIENTS 1

cup creamy sunflower seed butter (no added sugar)

cup whole (unhulled) tahini

cup sugar

cup brown sugar

T. honey

cup unsweetened applesauce

2–3 tsp. milk alternative (coconut, oat, soy, rice, etc.), as needed Splash of vanilla 1

tsp. baking soda

tsp. baking powder

tsp. salt

T. (⅛ cup) cocoa powder

cup whole-spelt or whole-spelt blend flour

cup Wondermills white spelt flour

D IR EC T I O N S 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. 2. Cream together the seed butter, tahini, sugars, honey, applesauce, milk and vanilla. 3. Add the dry ingredients, and mix well. 4. With damp hands, roll the dough into tablespoon-sized balls. Arrange them on a parchment-lined cookie sheet, leaving space between cookies. Dip a fork into water, and gently flatten each ball (in one direction only, no need to criss-cross). They will flatten and spread more in the oven. 5. Bake the cookies for 10 minutes. Remove them from the oven, and leave the cookies on the trays for 10 minutes to give them a chance to set before moving them to a wire rack. *Spelt is a lighter form of wheat and does contain gluten. 2. Add oil and sugars, and cream together the mixture. 3. Add the baking soda, salt, flour and xanthan gum. Mix well. 4. Stir in the chocolate chips. 5. Drop rounded spoonfuls of dough onto a parchment-lined cookie sheet. For a neater look, gently roll each spoonful into a ball. Do not flatten. 6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Allow to cool on a baking sheet for ten minutes before moving. Note: These cookies can also be made into bars. Simply pour the batter into a 9x13-inch pan, and bake for 15 to 20 minutes.

How two mothers deal with food allergies in the family

Miriam and Gitty both have young families. Miriam is a stay-at-home mom; Gitty works out of the house. Both are vivacious women who put their families first. And both are mothers of two-year-old boys with food allergies. Speaking with them is inspiration on how to mother: Miriam exudes pure devotion while Gitty radiates confidence. Both firmly believe that they’re trying their best, but also know that the Third Partner is in control. Finally, both are founts of helpful tips for other mothers of allergic kids. Here is a conversation with both of them.

Allergy Care 101 Some pointers as provided by Miriam and Gitty: When using an EpiPen, always call Hatzolah because there can be a secondary reaction a while later, and it’s best to be in a safe place. EpiPens come in a set of two. Always keep them together because sometimes one won’t cut it, and you’ll need the second to save the child. Interesting fact, as per an allergist: Kids with eczema can take longer to outgrow an egg allergy than other allergic kids. Dye allergies pose a unique problem, as dyes are not always labeled. Watch out for Benadryl! That bright pink color is dye and won’t help with this allergy unless you buy the dye-free version.

My Eli was a fussy baby from day one, always gassy and screaming. When he was two months old, he started showing a light case of eczema on his torso, arms, legs and shoulders, and though we tried hydrocortisone creams, at a certain point I realized that maybe he’s allergic. So I went down the road of going on and off foods, but without seeing a clear enough difference to really do something about it.

Allergic colitis is not uncommon in infants and can cause sensitivity even to their own mother’s milk, but it’s often outgrown. Many doctors will help sensitize a child to allergens or allow food testing so that it can be outgrown.

From the day Mordy was born, I knew something was off. Already in the hospital I noticed that he was silently gagging on a clear fluid. While the nurse pooh-poohed it as extra fluid swallowed at some point, it was strange and I was nervous.

There are special formulas for sensitive or allergic babies; one kind has derivatives of dairy, but very broken down, so the baby can be exposed to it gently. Another is even more hypoallergenic. Another thing on the market that’s a big boon for allergic kids is a Bamba-like treat called Epuffanies by the brand Heaven & Earth.

Eli’s journey to practitioners and healers began at the energy healer at the age of six months. She claimed he was allergic to mercury from vaccines, sulfur and eggs. Well, he hadn’t been vaccinated yet and I don’t use matches, but the idea of eggs was on target. An allergist concurred with the diagnosis of an allergy to eggs, both to the yolks and whites.

MIRIAM:

Mordy saw a GI (gastroenterologist) at two weeks of age, after he gave us a scare with what is called “projectile vomiting.” The GI didn’t believe in reflux; he claimed there were air pockets in Mordy’s system that sent the food back out, so he gave him glucose. He also told me to go off milk. Mordy was not allergic, he said,

but he did have what was called a milk protein allergy, which is something that wouldn’t necessarily last past a year or cause him to be bona-fide allergic. History would prove otherwise about the allergy, but my going off milk made a huge difference. Eli had his first allergic reaction when he was around six or seven months old, when he’d just learned to crawl. One morning, he went over to a dropped bread crust smeared with peanut butter and started gnawing on it. My first thought was, “Hello, gross!” But then I was charmed by how much he seemed to be enjoying it. A short while later, though, he was scratching his head. His face had blown up, and he was scratching like crazy. The pediatrician told me to give him Benadryl, which I did, and by the time Hatzolah arrived, the reaction had cleared up. By the time he was a year old, Eli had gotten his first set of allergy test results: wheat, dairy, eggs, soy, sesame, peanuts and all tree nuts except walnuts and pecans. Peanuts and eggs came in with the highest numbers.

As a baby, Mordy was put on a special type of formula, which helped him out. He still had eczema on his cheeks, though. Out of intuition, I never gave him peanuts, and it’s amazing the way his body’s intuition worked: He never liked the typical baby favorites like challah or kugel.

GITTY:

When he was ten months old, I gave him some scrambled eggs, and he went into anaphylactic shock. First, he got itchy, so I gave him Motrin and put him to sleep. He woke up crying half an hour later, so swollen that he looked like a different person. I called Hatzolah, and they gave him an EpiPen injection in the ambulance. The doctor at the hospital confirmed that it was definitely a food-related reaction, and they gave him Benadryl and steroids. We saw an allergist after that, with initial testing showing that Mordy was allergic to almost everything. Today he’s still allergic to tree nuts, peanuts, fish, and maybe sesame. I’m still cautious with eggs and dairy, and there were times when Mordy was also off chicken, turkey and wheat. You know, I believe that allergy medicine is an underdeveloped field and that these tests are not always accurate. For instance, sesame is fairly high on Eli’s list, but he eats it all the time with no adverse reactions, while pecans are officially not on his allergy list, but I’m certain he’s reacted to them. Milk and wheat came back with higher numbers than hazelnuts, yet he eats dairy and wheat daily but reacts strongly to hazelnuts. All I can say is, you need to be your own advocate! You know your own kids, and a good doctor will take a mother’s opinion into account.

And it takes a lot of guesswork to figure out what you can hang on the allergies and what’s normal and unrelated to food. As a baby, Mordy was congested often. We thought it was the common cold, and he got tubes in his ears. But when we — at the same time — took him off a bunch of food, suddenly there were no sniffles anymore.

GITTY:

NonAllergic Moms, Know This When I ask you to put away your food because my son is allergic to it, please understand that my baby’s health is at stake, and please respect that! I’m not trying to be annoying.

MIRIAM SAYS:

When morahs send notices about food allergies, please take it seriously, and if you have questions, ask! My son’s playgroup teacher forwards the parents’ questions to me so I can answer them comfortably.

One silver lining for us is that we have a family background in allergies; my husband has sensitivities to certain foods, I have a dye allergy, and there are allergies on both sides of the family as well. In general, allergies are certainly genetic. Eli’s sister, as an infant, had what her GI called allergic colitis. I went off a bunch of foods for a while, then reintroduced them one by one in small amounts. By now she’s fine. So the nuts and bolts of caring for Eli didn’t hit me over the head so hard. I was already used to a life of schlepping special food everywhere, what with my mother traveling with entire meals for my brother who has celiac.

MIRIAM:

And we lucked out with Mordy’s sitter. She herself has kids with food-related issues, so we knew we could trust her. She’s extremely conscientious and proactive, and she literally built her space around Mordy for the two years she babysat him. She was able to tell me, “This highchair never had eggs served in it,” or, “These tables are for these specific foods.” She would call me the minute she saw something that looked like a hive.

GITTY:

Eli’s nut and egg allergies are airborne, so that really shakes things up. I’ve never sent him out to sitters, and I’m grateful that it works for me to stay home with him. Taking him out is a potential minefield; he’ll swell up in the ice cream store. Add heat, and it gets even worse. He actually once reacted from a shared vent when my neighbor baked with nuts! This neighbor is incredibly considerate and now calls me whenever she wants to bake with nuts so I can make sure that the room with the shared vent is closed. But even when everything’s checked out, I can still never know. There are no absolutes when it comes to allergies, and the same goes for allergists. After Eli had that peanut reaction, I found a different allergist with whom I felt more comfortable.

MIRIAM:

Mordy has already started going to playgroup, which makes things easier, because babysitters feed the kids with less of a schedule — and whenever one kid has food, all the other kids want some, too! Playgroups are more structured and have set meal times.

When Mordy was at the sitter, I sent tons of food with him every day. I bought a huge freezer at some point, and most of it was soon stocked with Mordy’s foods. He was off wheat and chicken for a while, but he ate meat, so it was fleishigs every morning. I rolled chopped meat into balls, put them in Ziploc bags, and squeezed them into a patty shape to bake in the morning. Every once in a while I’d make a pot of sloppy joes without sauce, spice it, and divvy it up in containers. I also found that any cut of meat can make a great meat soup, cooked overnight, shredded in the morning and stored in containers to heat individually. After heating them, I’d put these fleishig meals in a thermos for the day, and I’d include gluten-free croutons, too. I also used to make gluten-free recipes when Mordy was off wheat, and with mini scoopers, fashioned small cookies that I portioned two to three in a bag. I’d also do sugar cookies on a sheet pan, cut them into tiny squares, and bag them. This way I always had a ready variety of snacks. Today things are easier, although I do use Smart Balance margarine on bread instead of cream cheese or peanut butter, and soy milk to drink. Yeah, there’s lots of alternative cooking in my house too. For my husband’s sensitivity, I use mostly spelt as well as oat, rye, potatoes, rice and quinoa. I make my own sourdough spelt, which people can make a big deal out of, but as my

mother-in-law says, this is what every woman used to do before the days of yeast. It’s just a skill we’ve unlearned in the last hundred years! I basically make everything from scratch because then I can bake egg-free to accommodate Eli. Store-bought goodies that he can’t have make him very sad. You’d think a child with the amount of allergies Eli has can’t eat much, but you’d be surprised. With the amount of available products labeled and marketed for allergies, and a bit of creativity in the kitchen, there are enough options to go around. When it comes to baking, I play around a lot to compensate for the lack of eggs. I take recipes that I like and look for ways to adapt them to our family’s needs. A recipe with confectioners’ sugar, for example, absorbs oils differently, so there’s no need for eggs. I also use wet things as binders to sub for the eggs, like vanilla pudding, honey, applesauce or mashed beans. Once your creative juices are flowing, you can see that recipe ingredients aren’t etched in stone and that there’s always a way to work around things. Not every ingredient that’s called for is so sorely needed. All you need is creativity and the willingness to play around. And a huge amount of trust in the sitter you send to! fruit-and-veggie squeeze pouches at the sitter. I’d send corn pops and cereals, too, to make sure she always had backup. You don’t want your sitter to feel like it’s hard to have your child, and your investment and motivation will always increase their motivation, in turn, to provide the best care. I was always very honest with my sitter about reactions Mordy may have had the day before, even if I was scared she’d tell me to keep him home an extra day. That caution built trust between us, and I felt super comfortable sending Mordy to her. And she was simply unbelievable with him. When it would come to birthday parties, she would tell the other mothers about Mordy’s allergies, and they’d send in a separate snack for him. Mordy knew the difference, and he felt like a million dollars! He’d come home with a shining face, saying that Morah had given him “Mordy’s cookies” from another boy’s mother. Once, before a birthday party, she called me about a specific food that she felt was okay to try with Mordy, but she wanted my go-ahead. She gave him some as a trial twenty minutes before the party, to make sure he’d be able to have it with the other kids — and she was right, it was okay. Another thing this sitter once did was send home information about allergies to parents, and when she did, she underscored the potential severity of a reaction. She wanted the parents who were clueless about allergies to really be cautious. You can never be careful enough. Although Eli never had an anaphylactic allergic reaction, which is life-threatening, I’m equipped with EpiPens and have never sent him out to sitters, just to my mother and mother-in-law. Now he’s home with me, and I’m planning to keep him home for at least another year. Then I’ll need to find a morah I can really trust, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.

MIRIAM:

Even the thought of anaphylaxis is frightening enough! I was the only one who witnessed Mordy’s anaphylactic reaction as a baby, and I’m still traumatized, so I became super cautious. Once, at a friend’s house, I found a cashew in Mordy’s mouth and panicked so badly that I went straight for the EpiPen, forgetting about Benadryl! At one point, I cut eggs out of the house entirely. And when I did bake with eggs, I washed my hands a million times afterward and made sure Mordy’s stuff wasn’t in the sink then. Whenever I went anywhere, I’d have my own stroller and snacks and treats for him, and I’d never put him in any eatery’s highchair. But by now, baruch Hashem, he’s able to eat baked foods that contain eggs.

Eventually, Eli’s food horizons expanded too. Although he was initially allergic to dairy, the only reaction he’s ever had to that was vomiting, so I slowly introduced him to different milchig foods. By now he’s eating everything dairy save for straight milk. But this shouldn’t be taken the wrong way at all, because allergies aren’t something to play with. I’d never give Eli nuts, for example, because I know there is a possibility that he’d have an even more severe reaction, chas v’shalom.

I feel the same. I know Mordy well enough to know which foods I can slowly expose him to, because I know which reaction he’ll get. By now he likes the challah and potato kugel he spurned as a baby, but he can’t eat scrambled eggs, pancakes or waffles yet. Still, it’s a lot better than his egg-free diet in the past. We’ve been working with an allergist who decides when the allergic child can have a challenge — a specifically prepped food containing the allergen — to try. The child eats it in the allergist’s office after a thorough checkup — they can’t have any Benadryl in their system, for example. The child is given the food in stages, bit by bit, and watched carefully. If there’s no allergic reaction, the child has passed the challenge and can be given this food in similar form and in moderation.

Eli still keeps us on our toes with his eczema, which never quite went away and flares up every so often. He doesn’t sleep through the night because of his chronic itch, which is why I keep him in long sleeves and pants most of the time. I dressed him in short sleeves for the first time ever this summer, but just on occasion, or else he’d scratch until he bled. Eczema is the body’s call for more moisture, so I bathe Eli every day and apply an oil-based cream — like Aqaphor — in a thin layer to his skin while he’s wet. He’s ruined all his pajamas by scratching,

MIRIAM:

which is why I buy them in bulk at Carter’s. If anyone sees 100% cotton pajamas with fire trucks, please let me know! That’s all he’ll wear, and our stock is running low. Eli is also very often thirsty, and all he wants is water, even when I want to give him juice to supplement his calorie intake. I wet his face a lot to moisturize him and open his pores, which, was recommended by his dermatologist, Dr. Strenger, and is the most successful strategy we’ve found to manage the eczema. The game we play with Mordy is, “What can we get him to eat today?” We give him whatever he’s willing to eat this minute. By now he can have some dairy items but not straight milk or yogurt. So, chocolate milk? Great protein! Using no-spill cups for meat soups make this a great go-to as well. He’s a tough little guy, our Mordy. I wonder if he toughened up precisely because he has to stand up for himself in different ways. He knows and feels that he’s different, even though I try very hard not to make him feel so.

GITTY:

Eli can have preservatives and even a bit of soy. Store-bought whole-wheat bread is egg-free, so I buy that. And because I want Eli to have what to eat since his diet is more limited than an average kid’s, I’m more lenient with him than I’d be

with another kid. I buy chocolate pudding by the case. And if chocolate’s the thing Eli’s eating today, I’ll give him chocolate for all three meals, because at least he’s eating! At shalosh seudos I give my daughter egg salad, but with Eli, I’m happy if he eats hummus with his potato chips. As hard as we try, we’re still human, and Hashem is in control. We try our best to protect our kids, but we don’t know exactly what goes on in their bodies. I’m just more confident now because after two years, I know Mordy better.

It’s amazing how Hashem balances everything to work perfectly in every circumstance. Eli has a sweet and compliant personality that makes it easier to care for him; when you see him, your heart melts. And we’re lucky that his face wasn’t affected much by his eczema.

It’s crazy the way things can hit you all of a sudden. Case in point: I recently gave Mordy some watermelon in the car. It was just me and him and bad traffic. At one point, when I turned around to look at him, I found that he was covered in hives! Baruch Hashem, I had Benadryl with me. I quickly gave him a dose and took side streets so I could keep checking on him. After a second dose, the hives cleared up, but the whole thing was so random! The only possible trigger I could think of was that the knife I used to cut the melon had been used to cut frozen peanut chews a while before, but it had long been washed off! These things are so farfetched and totally beyond our control.

GITTY:

Oh, you never know. I once lit a scented candle, and Eli had a reaction. Why? It turned out that the candle had essential oil with pecans in it. And even when everything checks out, I could still never know. I was once at a sheva brachos where I knew all the foods were safe for him, but he still had a reaction. For those who enjoy a gorgeous road trip, this round trip takes about 2.5 hours, but plan to spend several hours on the road to allow for stops for snack, lunch and to take in the beauty and sweeping views of mountains and valleys. The route is dubbed so since it spans habitats ranging from cactus-covered desert stretches to forested mountainsides boasting pine, oak and fir trees. Be prepared for colder spots on this route, with elevation changes of up to 5,000 feet. The best place to start is at the Visitor Center listed below. There, you can acquire info about scenic overlooks, picnic areas, campgrounds and recreation opportunities. While the actual route does not include any rest areas, gas stations can be found in Palm Desert, Banning, Mountain Center and Idyllwild.

There was a shul, a pool and pool house, a guest house, and a ”shed” (a small house of its own) that housed the landscaper’s vehicles, tools and supplies. There was a gym, and a garage where her driver maintained the fleet. Even the laundry room — “wardrobing suite,” she called it — was special, with an area for dressmaking and advanced clothing care. The truth is, the tour didn’t have to take five hours. But I saw that Sheila was enjoying it. She had an audience for her accomplishments and loved answering my questions about why she did this or that. In a certain sense, by showing me her things, she was also sharing her life story with me. As we made our way through the house, I saw that all over the house, there were closets. Not just closets for linen and coats and clothes — though of course there were many of those. But

Sheila also had closets full of gorgeous tableware, dishes and décor items. Closets full of vases and glasses. Closets of toys and cosmetic sets and home accessories. An entire walk-in closet full of wine. There were storage rooms in the basement lined with closets full of elegant pens and wallets and even electronics. Hair accessories and scarves and costume jewelry. Accent tables and footrests and small paintings. Books and seforim and games. Most of the items in all these closets seemed to be brand new. A lot of it was still in its original packaging. The house went on and on. Often, when I meet with a client for the first consult, they feel paralyzed when they realize how much work there is to be done, and I have to reassure them that we’re going to take it “one room at a time.” This time I had to reassure myself. with cream cheese and coffee. It was delicious and comforting. “So,” I started, “let’s define our goals here.” “There’s no clutter,” Sheila acknowledged, “because I have so much storage space. But still, I feel overwhelmed by all the things in this house. I can’t keep track of where anything is.” I often meet clients who believe that if only they had more space or more resources, they wouldn’t need my help. But Sheila’s home proved that it’s not about the space you have or don’t have, or the stuff you have or don’t have. If it’s not organized, it’s not useful. We decided to organize it all – one room at a time. As I worked with Sheila week after week, I got an inside look at her lifestyle. I watched her answer many phone calls every day and give tzedakah to literally everyone who asked. I learned that she spent every Wednesday visiting and entertaining patients at a local long-term care facility. I saw that she allowed the nearby school to use her grounds on nice days, so often we’d hear the girls davening as we worked. She was involved in many needs of the community, and gave of herself and her resources freely. As we sorted through her things, we schmoozed (what else do frum women do together?). Sheila told me stories about the places she’d traveled and where she’d purchased each item. As we separated clothes to be donated, she told

me about the occasions she’d worn each piece. It struck me how much she was enjoying this part of the process. When I’m cleaning up at the end of a long day, I like to schmooze on the phone with a friend, tell her where I went that day and what happened. Sheila was doing that now. Probably the biggest change we created was the closets. Most of the things I had seen in those closets were actually purchased as gifts – Sheila loved to give, and had gifts in every price range and for every age range. Instead of storing them in random closets throughout the house, we created a set of gift closets in one of the storage rooms and organized the gifts by category. And again, as we worked on those closets, Sheila talked. She told me stories about the things she’d chosen and the people she’d bought them for. She told me about gifts she had gotten and gifts she had given. When I first met her, I had wondered what Sheila — the woman who had everything — could possibly need from me. But now I know. We all need each other. We all need people to listen to our stories, support us in our projects, and maybe even just keep us company as we do housework or organize closets. In that way, Sheila was no different from me or any of us. Those closets filled with gifts taught me that even people who have everything need someone to share it with.

TAKE IT HOME Before I became an organizer, I didn’t own a tape measure. I thought it was a man thing. Anytime I decided to be a little more put together, I’d go to the store, pick a container and come home. Then I’d try to fit everything in it, and then try to fit it in the place I wanted to keep it. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes… it didn’t really work. That’s over. Now I measure every space before I buy the container. There are bins of every depth, width and height; why not maximize the space? I bought myself a hot pink measuring tape on Amazon, and it’s my best friend. Measuring gets you the perfect fit and the perfect look. How to measure effectively: Measure the width and the depth. It’s also helpful to know the height of the space, even if you don’t need a container that fills the height. Once you have the measurements, go to the store and buy a bin that will fit the space. For deep areas, buy deep bins; for low spaces, buy low ones.

piPen is the commonly used name for an epinephrine auto-injector. No bigger than a cigar, the device is a Cold War spinoff based on the nineteenth-century innovation of hollow-needle injections. During the Cold War the military wanted a quick way for troops to self-inject antidotes to nerve gas. In the 1970s, inventor Sheldon Kaplan recognized that modifications in the “pen” could turn it into a lifesaver for civilians, especially those susceptible to anaphylactic shock, where a fast response can mean the difference between life and death.

A MATTER OF MINUTES Greek for “without protection,” anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that occurs when the body launches a full-scale attack on a substance that should be harmless, like peanuts or latex. French physiologist Charles Richet won the Nobel Prize in 1913 for describing and naming the phenomenon, which he studied by injecting dogs with jellyfish venom. There are levels of anaphylaxis, with the most serious one causing the body’s blood pressure to drop and the airways to close off. A person can go from being in a room with peanut butter to fighting for their life in minutes.

ALLERGIC TO HUMOR In 2019, Australian parents of children with allergies were outraged at a restaurant ad that made light of peanut allergies. The ad promoted a new dessert, The Reese’s Piece, which was described as “loaded with ice cream and drizzled in peanut butter and chocolate.” The text read, “Get those EpiPens ready, because this is going to be worth it.” “Nothing is worth possibly dying for, and I wouldn’t wish anaphylaxis on anyone — the pain of your throat closing, hoping the EpiPen does work, is not something I’ll forget... “ one person replied. THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD When the EpiPen was approved by the FDA in 1987, it was met with a sigh of relief from patients and their families. Kaplan’s design employs a spring-loaded syringe that comes pre-filled with a dose of adrenaline. It’s designed to be administered through a person’s clothing and requires no medical expertise.

SCHOOL SAFETY In 2013, President Obama signed the School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act, which gives financial incentives to schools that keep epinephrine auto-injectors on hand.

STALLED TECHNOLOGY This September, the FDA chose not to approve an epinephrine nasal spray, much to the disappointment of allergy-sufferers who were looking forward to a needle-free alternative to the EpiPen. According to the FDA, the agency wants to conduct further studies before approving the drug. Until the FDA sifts through a backlog of other auto-injector applications, epinephrine technology appears to be at a standstill.

EARLY INJECTION IS KEY According to the manufacturer, when symptoms start to appear, the EpiPen should be administered immediately. The pen can be used regardless of other medical conditions or other medications. A study shows that many people having severe reactions show up to the hospital without using the product first; only slightly more than half of those who had an auto-injector used it prior to arrival in the emergency department.

NO COMPETITION As the initial and most-enduring auto-injector available, medical professionals and patients alike have come to trust the EpiPen brand over any other device. Additionally, the famous EpiPen has almost no competition. The AuviQ, a smaller and more discreet auto-injector, equipped with a voice function that talks a patient through its deployment, was recalled in 2015 after delivering inconsistent drug doses. Another option, Twinject, has also been discontinued. Adrenaclick is the only other auto-injector still available to consumers. It retails for about a quarter of the price of the EpiPen, and its manufacturer also makes a generic version.
