INTRODUCTION

own picturesque miles of beaches, around winding coastlines, over connecting bridges, and between rows of palm trees, the Coastal Bend boasts a flourishing arts and culture scene, diverse culinary options, a plethora of outdoor activities, and unmatched scenic views. Though these sights, sounds, and flavors come together to make up the Coastal Bend, perhaps the greatest component, the last – and most important – piece of the puzzle, is the unparalleled sense of community. While the cities of Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, Rockport, and Portland are separated by causeways and bodies of water, what brings them together in forming our great region is the notion of together-

ness. The people who make up the Coastal Bend, and the shared bond that comes from living here, ignite love and pride in where we live. This guide is meant to help residents learn the best restaurants, shopping locales, activities, entertainment, neighborhoods, and healthcare services around the region. However, it also serves as a way for new Coastal Bend dwellers to fall in love with their city. You’ll often hear locals around these parts use the phrase “We love where we live.” There are many reasons why that rings true, and our hope for this guide is that it will bring you a bit of insight as to why we swear by that motto ... and then inspire you to get out and live it yourself! 50 COASTAL BEND LOCAL MUST DO’S 12

AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO THE COASTAL BEND BY K YLIE COOPER

W

hat does it mean to be “a local?” Some might say it’s a birthright, others might say it’s how

long you’ve lived somewhere. We however, feel it’s more about sharing a boundary-transcending bond with one another. A bond that when you come across it, you know. It’s a shared experience with other Coastal Bend locals. It’s an insider tip only someone from the area would understand. We took the idea of that bond and turned it into a list of 50 things every local should do, know, or experience. We believe these will become the places and experiences you’ll share with others, so they’ll know you’re now part of the fabric that makes up the Coastal Bend.

1

The sea turtle release is one of those things almost every

Coastal Bend local talks about, but few have actually participated in it. During this event, newly hatched sea turtles slowly make their way to the water. While the releases do not occur on a regular schedule, they typically happen between June and August. You might not be too happy when your alarm goes off, but watching baby turtles return to their true home will definitely be worth it.

2

Exploring a museum with friends can be fun, but wandering around aimlessly for hours by yourself is a whole other experience. Carve some time out of your day and allow yourself to get lost in the Art Museum of South Texas. With new exhibits every few months, filled with beautiful and culturally-rich pieces of art, it will be more than easy to spend a day here.

3

Downtown Corpus Christi is experiencing major growth! Park the car and explore downtown on foot to discover murals, cool architecture, sides of buildings with more character than you could ever imagine, and optimum photo opportunities.

4

Swantner Park has some type of special place in the heart of locals. Whether they went on a “first date” there or brought breakfast tacos at sunrise, getting out of the car and sitting by the water is a sure-fire way to enjoy a peaceful moment in the city. Plus, there is a killer view of the downtown skyline from here!

5

Janet! Dr. Scott! Janet! Brad! ROCKY! Any true Coastal Bend local absolutely will have attended a performance of

the Rocky Horror Picture Show at Aurora Arts Theatre. Not for the faint of heart, this annual production gets better year after year and is unlike any other theatre performance. From the prop bags to the call outs, you’ll most definitely leave this show a whole new person.

6

The chance to immerse yourself in unruffled Texas nature is just a ferry ride away from Port Aransas. San Jose Island is a hub for birding, fishing, shell searching, and beach lounging. Plus, there is a pretty solid chance you’ll spot a dolphin or two on your commute!

7

The next time you’re on the hunt for fresh produce and goods, wait until Wednesday, and then head to the Downtown Farmers’ Market. Stop by any of the vendor booths and you’ll find a bounty of squash, carrots, tomatoes, peaches, local honey, fresh bread, and so much more. Bring your reusable bags and stock your kitchen with local goodness.

We common folk might never be able to create 10-foot-tall sand sculptures, but walking the entire length of the beach, which is lined with sculpture after sculpture, is good enough. Try not to have your jaw dropped as you gaze upon these magnificent works of art made completely out of sand. Every April, rain or shine, Texas Sandfest should be on your Coastal Bend bucket list.

If you ever find yourself wondering what to do on a drab summer Wednesday night, an often unknown or overlooked activity is to head down to the T-heads and experience beautiful sailboats of all sizes racing. You can either sit in the designated bleachers or head to Joe’s Crab Shack and sit outside with a cocktail and watch.

SAILBOAT RACES: JARRED SCHUETZE, AUSTIN STREET: RACHEL BENAVIDES

Sipping on your favorite cocktail amid floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing one of the best views in town is pretty ideal. Well, that is exactly what is in store for you when having a drink at the Grand View Lounge. Atop the Best Western Hotel on Shoreline Blvd., this bar offers a sophisticated libation break in your week.

11

Even if oysters aren’t really your thing, every Coastal Bend local should attempt to eat them at least once. Water Street Oyster Bar has some pretty great ones (which would explain why it’s in the name). Order a dozen and spruce them up with horseradish, fresh lemons, and a dash of Tabasco sauce. Even if you don’t enjoy the experience, at least you can say you’ve tried it!

A shot of Baileys dropping into a full pint of Guinness and then being chugged is quite possibly one of the best ways to start your night. The next time you head downtown for a night of bar hopping, make Cassidy’s Irish Pub your first stop. It will give you just the right amount of buzz you’ll need to energize your spirits for the night ahead.

15

Two-dollar draft pints every single Tuesday night. That in and of itself should be enough of a description. The Surf Club is a longtime staple in our community and Pint Night has been allowing old and new friends alike to gather and enjoy one another’s company over some crazy cheap beer. While you’re at it, order some battered fries; you won’t regret it.

You don’t have to be a professional filmmaker to participate in CC 7 Day (although it might help if you’re looking to snag some awards). This annual event permits filmmakers 7 days to create a film that fulfils certain requirements such as a local location, a key line, and a prop that must be incorporated. Even if filmmaking is way out of your wheelhouse, you can attend the full day of viewing at Alamo Drafthouse and watch local shorts on the big screen!

14

Austin Street is a street every Coastal Bend local should adore. Filled with art galleries, boutique shops, restaurants, and so much more, this staple of Rockport provides almost everyone with something they will enjoy. The arts and culture scene you’ll encounter when wandering up and down this street is well worth it.

While we aren’t the biggest city ever, it can still be hard to view the stars under the city lights. Instead, take a drive out to the National Seashore and allow yourself to be awed by your surroundings. Our advice would be to get out there a little before sunset, so you can watch as the sun descends over the dunes and the sky becomes illuminated only by the moon and the stars.

17

While the new Harbor Bridge will be great for tons of reasons, one can’t help but feel saddened when envisioning our skyline without the silhouette of the Harbor Bridge we all know and love. You still have a while to accomplish this, but walking the bridge, end to end, is a must before you no longer can! Will there be a Harbor Bridge Walk when the new bridge is completed? We aren’t sure, but we aren’t taking any chances on missing our opportunity. 16

18

This might sound like a cheesy rom-com storyline, but really, it’s just a classic Coastal Bend activity to partake in. Horses on the Beach: Corpus Christi, just south of Bob Hall Pier, will take you on a tour of the beach, lasting anywhere between an hour and an hour and a half. You can even book a “Sunset Ride” and take in the beach and all its glory from atop a four-legged friend.

19

As one of the largest relay marathons in the country, Beach to Bay is something every Coastal Bend local should do at least once. You don’t have to be a seasoned runner to participate! Simply gather five other people and create your team. Come up with a clever name, make some t-shirts, and walk the whole thing for all anyone cares. This race literally takes its participants from the beach to the bay.

20

When you live in a beach town, it is almost inevitable for usual land activities to make their way to the water. Next time you’re looking for a yoga class, to partake in,

try out a session with Water Dog Yoga, SUP & Barre! This unique approach to yoga allows participants to go through the normal flows atop a floating paddle board. There are even classes where your pups are welcomed!

21

We aren’t quite sure why ordering pizza by the slice feels so cool. Maybe because it makes us feel like we are on the streets of New York, visiting a classic pizza shop in a random neighborhood. Whatever the case might be, getting pizza at House of Rock is a real tasty item on this list. As one of the few spots in town that will serve you by the slice, you’ll be thanking us for the recommendation with every bite you take.

Let’s be real, brunch is certainly the most important meal of the day. Grab your friends and head over to Muse Bistro for a new, local brunch experience. The spot features a laid-back atmosphere with house music, elegant décor, and a great menu.

There’s no better way to enjoy the warmer seasons in the Coastal Bend than out on a boat. If you don’t have a boat of your own, have no fear. Corpus Christi Party Boat is here to provide locals with party boat rentals for watersports or a 16-mile cruise through North Padre Island’s Ski Canals.

S&J’s kolaches are in a world of their own. The perfect outside is just the right combination of buttery, salty, and sweet. The inside, filled with cheese and your choice of meat, oozes out and satisfies every single one of your taste buds. We promise we aren’t exaggerating when we say you’re going to want to get an entire box of these to take with you when you leave.

The Botanical Gardens is a true gem of the Coastal Bend. You can visit any time of year and be mesmerized by the nature inside its gates. However, every spring they host their annual BIG BLOOM Plant Sale where each visitor can enter the gardens for only one dollar. Inside you’ll find rows and rows of plants for sale, a butterfly release, tons of local vendors, and so much more.

Located right in the heart of Downtown Corpus Christi, Mesquite St. has been a staple in the ever-growing comedy and stand up scene in town. Every week you’ll catch national touring comedy acts bringing the laughs. An added bonus? While you’re catching a show, you can also chow on (or sample) their delicious food!

It’s no secret, we Coastal Bend locals love our tacos. But finding the perfect taqueria that suits all your needs is quite important. So, find your go-to spot and become a regular! You’ll feel connected and known, you’ll eat a great taco, and you’ll be supporting a local business. Wins all around!

During the month of October, the bravest of souls board the USS Lexington to explore the ship in all its spooky glory. The tour will take you through dark corridors and creaky hatchways, and allow you to experience unimaginable sights, screams, and sounds. There are tons of festivals in the Coastal Bend area year round. However, there is something about the Rockport Art Festival that sets itself apart from the others. The city of Rockport has always been a hub for the arts, and for this festival they pull out all the stops. Rows and rows of artists, vendors, live music, food trucks, and more.

It could just be because of the name, but there is nothing more comforting than a Hug in a Mug from Coffee Waves. This deliciously cozy drink combines chai, soy milk, and coconut to make the perfect beverage. Order it hot or iced and allow the flavors to give you a hug.

High up on a sand dune in Port Aransas sits the tiniest white chapel. Built in the late 1930s by Aline B. Carter, the Chapel on the Dunes is a true Coastal Bend treasure. Inside the white structure, you’ll find beautiful paintings floor to ceiling, all designed by Aline herself. The chapel is truly a sight that will take your breath away, both with its presence and its story.

32

If there is one thing Corpus Christi is known for, it’s being the birthplace of Selena Quintanilla. Pay tribute to the Queen of Tejano by stopping by the Selena Museum to learn more about her life and legacy or snap a photo at the Selena Memorial-Mirador De La Flor.

33

There’s nothing more nostalgic than

sitting at a diner counter while sipping a milkshake. That’s what’s in store for you when grabbing lunch at Hamlin Fountain & Gifts. This longtime Corpus staple is a family-friendly spot filled with magic.

RACHEL BENAVIDES

34

Picture this: It’s a sunny Saturday afternoon, you’re surrounded by friends, and the drinks are flowing. We highly recommend taking your day drinking adventure to BUS. This massive outdoor bar is family-friendly, located in the heart of Downtown Corpus Christi, and always has a food truck on site. THEBENDMAG.COM

37

Are you even a true local if you’ve never woken up early enough to grab a dozen donuts from Gates Donuts? This local donut stand is a Corpus Christi staple and never disappoints. The only trick is making sure you get there before they sell out!

38

A little friendly competition never hurt anybody. Gather a group of people together and play a game of volleyball at Dewey’s Beer Garden. Even if volleyball isn’t really your thing, they have tons of other activities like horseshoes, giant Jenga, corn hole, dodgeball, and more!

39

Living in a beach town, we should all take it upon ourselves to participate in a beach clean-up from time to time. Taking care of our beaches means taking care of our home! There are tons of organizations in town that host regularly scheduled clean-ups at each of the beaches in our area. Take your family and make a fun, yet impactful, day out of it.

40

There is no soup quite like the

poblano soup at Nuevo Café. It will leave you sniffling from the heat it contains, but it is well worth it. Their homemade croutons that are placed ever so gracefully atop the bowl of creamy soup add the perfect crunch to this delicious Corpus staple.

35

The Bay Jammin’ Concert & Cinema Series is one of the coolest summer

activities in the Coastal Bend. Every Thursday and Friday during June and August, you can head to the Cole Park Amphitheater to catch a show or movie screening. The live music ranges from classic rock to jazz, and the films are always family-friendly. Bring your friends, your kids, your dog, your snacks, and your lawn chairs, and you’ll be set for the perfect evening.

It might be because of the intense ultra-violet lighting and the lack of any type of natural light, but when you are in the “Tentacles” exhibit at the Texas State Aquarium, it feels as though you have taken a deep dive into the ocean. Several species of jellyfish call this room home, allowing guests to view the floating phantoms up close and personal.

With their traveling cooking pot and rainbow-colored beach chairs, Rollin’ Tide Boil Company brings good food and captivating coastal sunsets together. The next time you plan on spending a day at the beach, consider letting Rollin’ Tide create a picturesque cook-out for you.

42

Did you know Corpus Christi has been named “The Birdiest City in America” several years in a row? With over 250 native and migrating bird species spotted throughout the year, birdwatching in the Coastal Bend is truly next level.

Granny’s Tamales has remained a South Texas tamale staple for over 20 years. Juanita, the founder of Granny’s, is at the core of it all and her original recipe is still used. Whether it’s a holiday or you just have a craving,

The U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels make an annual appearance in the Coastal Bend as a part of the Wings Over South Texas Air Show. Now in partnership with Buc Days, the best seat in the house can be found on the Seawall. It’s in the perfect location to watch the Angels as they zip through the sky for a memorable performance.

45

Did you know the oldest federal military cemetery in Texas is right in our own backyard? That sounds a little spooky, but really, it’s jam-packed with rich history. Lined with mesquite trees winding down the pathways, Old Bayview Cemetery is home to the remains of military veterans and the earliest settlers of Corpus Christi. Wander around by yourself or take a tour; either way, you’ll learn a whole lot about Corpus’s history. 20

The Big Blue Crab in Rockport was completely destroyed by Hurricane Harvey in 2018. However, artists are working hard to bring the iconic crab back to life. Paying the crab a visit when it’s back home will definitely be a Coastal Bend must-do.

48

The pebbled walkway surrounding Water Street Market is home to the South Texas Music Walk of Fame – referred to fondly as “The Walk.” Take a self-guided tour of The Walk and discover musicians, songwriters, producers, and performers of all styles of music, from the early 1900s through today, from San Antonio to the southern tip of Texas.

49

If you’ve ever wondered what a bird’s eye view of our city looks like, Espejo Helicopters is here to help you out. They have a variety of tours for the public and, depending on what parts of the Coastal Bend you’d like to see, they’ll take you out. They also have “Discovery Flights” where you can get basic ground training and even experience 30 minutes of hands on flying.

50

Supporting locals has never been easier, thanks to the bi-annual pop-up market, Loca for Local . Founded by Elena Flores of Sew Bonita, this event features over 20 local vendors to shop from online, all in one place. Participating in this event is the best way to shop local!

When we say “Coastal Bend,” you might be wondering what all that includes. While the City of Corpus Christi makes up a decent portion of land, geographically speaking, our surrounding towns truly make the Coastal Bend complete. Each city features its own unique set of dining, shopping, arts, and entertainment options. In addition to the neighboring cities, we broke Corpus Christi into three areas for the sake of this guide.

GETTING OUT

Welcome to the Water A guide to water sport adventures in the Coastal Bend BY JES SIE CHROBOCINKSI

I

n the Coastal Bend, opportunities to be out on the water are anything but scarce. With consistent breezes, warm temperatures, and multiple inviting bodies of water, you can find all sorts of water sport adventures right in your own backyard. Whether you’re looking for an adrenaline rush or a calm experience, the Coastal Bend has water activities for all ages and experience levels – so get out of the house, grab the board of your liking, and embrace our Coastal Bend water culture!

Corpus Christi is the surfing mecca of Texas. In the summer season, the southeast sea breeze blows across the Gulf of Mexico, building a choppy surf that fuels prime conditions along the South Texas Coast for novices and surf addicts alike. Waves in the Gulf slow down early due to the gradual slope of the continental shelf, and begin to feel the bottom early on, which slows them down to generate a forgiving wave. With water temperatures in the summer averaging about 86 degrees, surf here is considerably warmer than waters on the east and west coasts. Keith Bass, the previous Manager of the Texas Surf Museum, has been surfing since he was 14. “What I like about surfing here is the unpredictability of it. It can be slop one hour, then great surf another. It’s so random – always changing, always breaking in a different spot, dropping in different areas. It’s also generally forgiving with the sandy bottom, but you need to be a good paddler on the big days. If you can surf here, you can surf anywhere,” he shares. In 2005, Corpus Christi birthed the only surf museum in the state. The Texas Surf Museum 46

explores the history of the pastime, showcasing the unique surfing achievements that have blossomed in Texas and in our local area. A bucket-list attraction for surfers, tourists, and history buffs alike, the museum is home to hundreds of beautiful surfing treasures, an extensive history of surfing pioneers, and educational displays of proper conservation practices to protect and preserve the beaches, bays, and waterways of the Texas Gulf Coast we all know and love. The non-profit museum plays a vibrant part in the community, providing educational opportunities and encouraging the locals and tourists to experience the fun, accessible, safe, and healthy lifestyle of surfing. “We love showing people what’s cool about Corpus. Every water sport is available for everyone, if you really want to try. [Surfing is] mentally stimulating, exciting, and an occasional adrenaline rush. It keeps you healthy. I’ve always said the salt preserves you,” Bass says with a laugh, even though he definitely isn’t kidding. Before 1962, surfboards and shops were not available in the Coastal Bend.

Bass says, “These guys from Galveston went out to California and different places to buy supplies to make surfboards, because there was nowhere in Texas where you could get that kind of stuff. It started a big surfing boom.” Surfing in Corpus Christi became popular after it flourished in Galveston, bringing much of the lifestyle that exists here today. For 32 years, Wind and Wave has been the premier South Texas surf, skate, and kayak shop. The locally-owned family business provides daily and weekly surfboard, stand up paddle board, and kayak rentals, all conveniently located on the way to the beach in Flour Bluff. Nate Floyd, whose family owns it, says, “Corpus has the best proximity to the beach. We tend to have more and better waves throughout the year. We’re kind of like the epicenter of Texas surfing.” For more Texas surf history, visit the Texas Surf Museum located in the Water Street Market. texassurfmuseum.org THEBENDMAG.COM

Bird Island Basin is one of the top three windsurfing locations in North America.

W IND S UR FIN G Basin is by far the best location to learn to windsurf because of the minimal water depth and the school. Worldwinds Windsurfing offers appropriate gear and the best classes for beginners. “It can be a little bit harder when the water is deeper and not as smooth. The Laguna here is flat and shallow, so it’s great for beginners, intermediate, and speedsters. You can be 8 or 80 years old. Windsurfing is for all ages,” he adds with a little chuckle. Worldwinds owner Don Jackson says it’s the best-kept secret in Corpus Christi. “There’s not a better place to teach windsurfing than right here. From a standpoint of safety, you have the flat, shallow, warm water, and you’re in a close and safe environment, bringing you a higher chance of success because the conditions really are just perfect.” For class times and more information, call (361) 949-7472. Bird Island Basin is the last windsurfing stronghold. Every year, Corpus attracts visitors from up north to this prime location of a calm and shallow Laguna Madre. As one of the top three destinations for windsurfing in North America, Bird Island Basin is internationally recognized for the sport, and is the only windsurfing operation in a National Park. Bird Island Basin offers a unique experience of windsurfing, as well as kayaking, boating, birding, fishing, and camping. Windsurfing is a surface water sport that essentially combines elements from both surfing and sailing, using the wind to propel adventurers forward, as opposed to the waves themselves. It didn’t become the sport we all know today until the 1960s, when a new board designed specifically for windsurfing allowed it to leap into prominence. Surfing isn’t the only sport central to Corpus Christi. In fact, all around the Coastal Bend, from Rockport and Aransas Pass to Mustang Island, locals and visitors can find kayaking adventures for everyone. Frank Floyd, owner of Wind and Wave, tells us kayaking is user-friendly and an easy way for people to get out on the water, even if they might not have much experience. “You can get boats set up for the family, it’s dog-friendly, and you don’t have to be in perfect shape or condition. Just about anyone can do it; there are kayaks made for just about everyone.” Areas such as the Laguna Madre, Lighthouse Lakes, and Mustang Island State Park offer warm, shallow waters and unique bird watching. Locals will also attest to fishing from their kayaks for a convenient and peaceful day on the water. “If there’s no surf, then early in the morning before work, I’ll drop the kayak off the back dock and go paddling and look for some fish, or just go for a paddle and see the birds and get away from everything. I was a surfer first, but I love getting out and paddling and escaping,” Floyd says enthusiastically. Wind and Wave schedules demo days for prospective kayakers to come out and play with different models and see what each kayak is like. Floyd shares, “Wind and Wave offers a great selection of kayaks that serve the best use for the region. We like to know what you’re going to use it for and get you what fits your needs. That’s always been our philosophy.” For daily forecasts and more information, follow Wind and Wave on Facebook @ windandwave. THEBENDMAG.COM

GETTING OUT

No boat, no problem! There are plenty of shore fishing options in the Coastal Bend.

FI S HIN G The Gulf Coast is a definite hot spot for fishing – anglers travel here from all over to drop a line into our green waters. Fishing in Corpus is great year-round, although species of fish to catch vary depending on the time of year. Local fisherman Tom Chrobocinski has been fishing in the Corpus Christi area since 1980. “There’s such a variety of fishing you can do. You can fish in the surf and catch anything from whiting to sharks. There are all kinds of different species; you never know what you’re going to catch when you’re out in the surf, which is kind of a fun thing,” he says with excitement. If you don’t have access to a boat, no problem. You can fish from shore, on a pier, or out in the Laguna, where people like to wade fish. Chrobocinski adds, “If you have a boat, it opens up a lot of things, but what a lot of people do now is kayak fishing.” On a popular summer day, boat ramps can get crowded, and

one of the advantages of kayak fishing is the ability to launch almost anywhere there’s a shoreline. Fishing also requires minimum equipment. Although the option to upgrade your gear is always available, the essentials are few: rod, bait or lure, and a license. You can find everything you need for your fishing needs at Roy’s Bait and Tackle, a locally-owned fishing outfitter that has provided fishing products to the community for 40 years. “I like lures you can fly. I like the sporting aspect of it, of ‘How can I fool this fish?’ Trying to tease the fish and know what’s going to bite that day, and see what I can do to entice them to take the bait, whether it’s a change in presentation or a change in the lures … most pretty lures catch fisherman, ugly lures catch fish,” Chrobocinski says. Fishing really is a sport for all ages, and is a great way to spend time outdoors with friends and family. The variety of ways to fish can seem daunting, but really it allows this to be one of the most convenient ways to get out on the water and really embrace our Coastal Bend culture. Roy’s Bait and Tackle Outfitters is at 7613 S Padre Island Drive; call (361) 992-2960.

With consistent breeze alone, Corpus is a world-class sailing location. You don’t have to own a yacht to enjoy the thrills of the Corpus Christi Bay. Every Wednesday night, depending on the weather, the sailing community gathers at the docks; rigging up their boats and fastening their clews to participate in the Corpus Christi Midget Ocean Racing Fleet (CCMORF) Wednesday Night Regatta. Captains are always accepting crew members to help race their boats. Experienced sailors are an advantage, but inexperienced sailors are welcomed, and serve an essential responsibility as “rail meat” – crew seated on the high side of the boat to counteract excessive heeling on windy days. “If people want to get on the water, there’s a way to get on the water. The primary reason more boats don’t go sailing is they don’t have enough crew, and you can’t sail a boat by yourself, especially from a racing standpoint,” says local boat owner and past Commodore Steve Hastings. Whether you sail is up to you; the Lawrence St. T-Head offers a great spot for onlookers to watch the local races at the start line. The races start at 6 p.m. and end around 8 p.m. Corpus is home to the third-oldest yacht club in the Gulf Coast. The Corpus Christi Yacht Club is a private club that welcomes members and non-members to enroll their youth (ages 6 – 18) in one-week sessions that provide the opportunity to learn basic sailing techniques. Local sailor Billy Liles says, “This is something to do with your kids to teach them a skill for life: self-reliance, teamwork, and being able to trust yourself and make quick decisions when Mother Nature throws wild cards at you.”

NORTHWEST Northwest Corpus Christi starts to move closer to the downtown and Bay Area. However, with access to the freeway being a short drive away, the commute is not too bad. The Northwest offers some more variety in amenities and is close to outdoor activities available in Calallen. Great opportunity for bird watching and pleasant evenings with family at West Guth Park. Northwest Corpus Christi offers an excellent education through the Tuloso-Midway Independent School District separate from Corpus Christi. The area is similar to Calallen as a primarily suburban area. CAL ALLEN Calallen is the most northwest neighborhood in Corpus Christi. The area consists mainly of families due to the quality of Calallen ISD. The school district acts independently from Corpus Christi Independent School District and boasts a quality education. If you are looking for a suburban dream with plenty of space to live out with your family, then look no further. Calallen is growing, adding new development to its portfolio. With friendly neighbors and a great community, it is no surprise why young families love to live here. Many of the residences were built between 1970 and 1999. Still, a lot of development has occurred in subdivisions where plenty of homes have been constructed since 2000. As it hugs the edge of Corpus Christi and Oso Bay, the Bay Area neighborhood is a beautiful residential community with plenty of amenities. The Bay Area is worth the visit, with the parks along Ocean Drive, a fabulous jogging trail, and a golf course nearby. This area of town has a lot to offer for those looking for beautiful homes while having plenty to keep themselves busy. Lamar Park and the incredible stretch of Ocean Drive are located in the Bay Area, making it a highly desirable location to move to. The South Side of Corpus Christi is known for having the newest neighborhoods, schools, churches, and the city’s only private country club. Growth is occurring rapidly with new businesses and subdivisions. With larger lots and distance from the Central City, it is no surprise the South Side accounts for about 75% of all new homes built in Corpus Christi. This area of town consists primarily of residential buildings. However, attractions like the South Texas Botanical Garden and the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve offer chances to get outdoors and enjoy the Coastal Bend’s natural beauty! With the newer schools and businesses emerging in the South Side, there are plenty of highly coveted subdivisions. Boundaries: Bush Dr, South Padre Island Dr, Oso Bay, County Road 41

Padre Island is still a well-kept secret considering its locale, lifestyle, and friendly environment to raise a family. A short trip over the causeway bridge and the aura changes. One goes from the city to a small community along the coast. Padre Island is the beach town within Corpus Christi. It offers excellent food, plenty of activities, and beautiful homes. It’s no wonder why Padre Island is a coveted area to live. The Island attracts a nice mix of young couples, growing families, and retirees to create a pleasant neighborhood cocktail. With an exemplary school system available, progressive development, and a short drive to the local beaches, The Island is waiting for you to call it home. FLOUR BLUFF Flour Bluff is a neighborhood between the South Side and Padre Island. Located on a peninsula, Flour Bluff is like a transitional neighborhood geographically. Going from the mainland to The Island, Flour Bluff serves both coming and going. It has its own school district with great renown and programs. Bordered by the Laguna Madre, there are great fishing holes in the area with restaurants that can cook up your catch. The seafood in the area is also incredible! Flour Bluff is an excellent neighborhood due to its location as an intermediary between The Island and Central City. So, if coastal lifestyle piques your interest while convenience is also essential, Flour Bluff is a worthy candidate. An oasis of sorts, Port Aransas is a beach town where one can enjoy high-end golfing, great fishing, exquisite dining, and an incredible school district. Golf carts are a standard mode of transportation.
