Definitely my first year attending in 2018. I actually ended up meeting the Lorelei Mermaids! Even though they’re just on the can of my favorite beers, I was completely starstruck.

My favorite memory is getting to know each winner personally and professionally as I plan the event every year. From working with them to grasp the scope of the event to seeing them fulfill their presentation, that's something I really love.

It would have to be 2019, with the photo op done by Karen Dominguez. My whole Wildflowers team piled on the sofa to pose for a photo. That picture still makes me smile.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Some Things Never Change I typically start this letter with a personal anecdote relating to the theme of the issue. However, it feels wrong to make any part of this particular issue about myself – because when it comes to The Local’s List, our annual reader’s choice poll, our team takes a step back and allows solely the public’s voice to populate the pages herein. Now in its sixth year, Local’s List has become much more than just an online poll. Due to a classic case of nostalgia, I went back to July 2016 and read what our President Jordan Regas had to say about the contest in its inaugural year. He spoke to the notion that locals know best, and how the list doubles as an all-inclusive set of recommendations. But the crux of his message revolved around the idea that Local’s List would serve as a reminder of the people in this community who, day in and day out, pour themselves into making the Coastal Bend the dynamic place that it is, filled with passionate, hardworking, and creative people. People who understand what it means to not only make up a community, but create one. We aim to shine a light on all things local with every single one of our issues, but this one is different. It comes completely from you, our readers. Over a period of two months beginning in early March, the public

nominates and then votes for its top picks in lifestyle-related categories. Nominees are vetted based on their local engagement and category fit, the top five from each advance to voting, and then it’s off to the races. Once the polls close, our team compiles the list of winners and the production of this issue begins. In “normal” years, we’d end our four-month-long Local’s List endeavor with a huge party, celebrating the winners and what makes our local community as a whole. While we’ve decided to once again hold off on the showcase event, we wanted to provide winners and readers with something similarly exciting to cap off the Local’s List season. And so, the special Local’s List publication was born. While you’ll still get a taste of the annual reader’s choice poll in this issue beginning on page 30, including the complete list of winners along with the second and third place entries (because the more local businesses, the merrier!), you’ll have to join us for our metaphorical celebration by also picking up a copy of the first ever Local’s List publication. A yearbook of sorts for this year’s “class” of winners, our goal was to let the winners really take center stage, giving every category a full writeup and exploring what makes the people, businesses, services, and places that won so great. That first year, the Local’s List online poll consisted of 37 categories, and 16,000 votes were cast from 1,300 different people. Six years later, our tallied totals look a little different: Our category list has grown to 127, and when all was said and done, 179,572 votes were cast from 33,711 people. Take a moment and let that sit with you for a bit. While Local’s List is now in its sixth year and the growth it’s experienced is exponential, some things will just never change. It will always be a poll populated by the readers, for the readers. It will always serve as a reminder that locals really do know best. But above all else, it will always take us back to the reason The Bend Magazine exists in the first place: because of you, your stories, your dreams, and your passions. We’re simply along for the ride, pen and camera in hand.

U

pon hearing the name Agape Ranch, your first thoughts might be images of vast, open land, beautiful horses, and an assortment of other ranch animals – that’s what I thought, but I could not have been more wrong. Agape Ranch holds a vision, mission, and purpose that far surpass the idea of being a home for animals. The Ranch, Agape Ranch’s new land, is transforming into a sanctuary for foster children and adoptive families. Many children are removed from their homes and the families they know due to abuse, abandonment, or neglect. This is when the need for a foster family arises. The population of foster youth in the Coastal Bend is continually growing. Unfortunately, due to the lack of foster homes, more than 60 percent of foster children in the Coastal Bend are being placed outside our area, and the children are often separated from their siblings. Plus, children “age out” of the foster care system upon turning 18, which has led to more than 90 percent of these young adults becoming homeless, incarcerated, lured into sex work, trafficked, or dead within three years of being aged out of foster care. These heartbreaking statistics led Susan and Tim Klaus to found the Agape Ranch with the vision that “Every child will experience unconditional love and understand his or her value.” After sitting down with Community Relations Coordinator Shannon Murphy, we learned all about the background of The Ranch, and what plans are in store for the land and the foster families who will live on it. The land was donated in 2016 by the Meaney family, after they heard Susan’s idea of wanting to build a neighborhood that 24 The Bend

would keep foster siblings together and help guide the older children aging out of the system while they pursue college or a trade school career. Groundbreaking for the first foster home began in January 2021, and Murphy happily announced the first family will be moving in this summer. The first foster home was funded with grants from the Moody Foundation, the Blanche Davis Moore Foundation, The Dewbre Family, Chick-Fil-A of the Coastal Bend, and the incredible contributions from Agape Ranch supporters. Thanks to continuous support and generosity of their contributors, Agape Ranch has brought The Ranch project to fruition. They have hopes to break ground on house number two this fall. The Ranch is planned to include up to 24 homes, playgrounds, walking paths, and a community center. Currently, the 501(c)3 charitable organization is fundraising for a home for youth aging out of foster care and a home that will house respite care providers – who are an important aspect of the ranch, as they provide temporary relief for the foster families. Murphy said Agape Ranch seeks to break the cycle of broken children by providing compassionate care and connections within the community, and giving them a place to call home with families who offer unconditional love through The Ranch. The Ranch is a neighborhood that will provide a safe environment where foster children can mature in all aspects of their lives. This is the first neighborhood of its kind in the Coastal Bend, and they hope to make the community more aware and more involved with the needs of foster care youth.

AROUND THE BEND PERSON OF INTEREST five months, I can say that I made a good decision. The work is interesting, the team is great, and every day I am afforded an opportunity to help push the city forward. KC: Both your education and career have been largely centered around public service. What do you think initially drew you to the field, and where does your passion for it continue to come from? NCY: That’s an interesting question. I really believe that public service gives you the opportunity to work for an ideal that is greater than yourself. I’m really attracted to that fact. I know that what I’m contributing to now in 2021 is going to affect generations perhaps 20, 25, or even 30 years from now. We are literally writing history when we walk into our offices. The thought is daunting, and I can’t think of a more rewarding responsibility.

KC: It's been a little over five months since you've been appointed to the position of Assistant City Manager. How have these first few months been? NCY: Wow, I’ve been running 100 miles per hour. The city is growing, and we must juggle a lot of priorities to keep pace with that growth. However, that is the way I prefer it, as I have had to sprint my entire working career. I’m happy and I’m starting to get settled in. I would like to believe that I am at a point where I am shifting away from drinking from the proverbial “firehose” – rather, I am becoming more comfortable and proactive when addressing some of the challenges that we have across the various departments in the city. KC: What inspired you to go for this position in the first place? NCY: I started my civilian career in Virginia doing similar work in local government. When I saw this opportunity available in Corpus Christi, I was intrigued, given that I’m from Houston. After 23 years of traveling with the military and four years working in Virginia, I’ve never had an opportunity to be so close to home. But what really solidified the decision for me was when I came to do an inperson interview with the city. I was able to gain the vision of the City’s Executive Leadership Team, and felt it was a mission that I wanted to be part of. After 28 The Bend

KC: What are some of the immediate goals you have been working toward during these first few months in your position? More forward-thinking goals in your position? NCY: Well, unfortunately, I arrived during the middle of February’s ice storm. So, my first goal was to help the community restabilize after suffering such an extreme weather event. That included removing dead vegetation and restoring landscaping via the Parks and Recreation Department. On the Gas side of the house, we had to figure out a way to mitigate the financial impact that surging gas prices had on our customers’ bills. In Solid Waste, we had to put together an emergency plan to assist our residents with removing brush and debris caused by the storm. We are not out of the woods yet, but I feel that we are in a good place. Now that recovery efforts aren’t as intense, my time is being freed up. I can now look at some of our departments’ long-term needs. Our Master Plan for Parks and Recreation will help us have the right amenities and services in the places where we live and play, the Solid Waste Department is assessing our recycling strategy, and our Gas Department is putting together a plan to increase our presence in the residential energy market. I’m also happy to announce that we launched a new city department: The Neighborhood


Services Department was established to consolidate community-related services under one management team. This effort will allow us to provide a faster response to blight, infrastructure issues, and code compliance concerns in our communities. We are currently putting together signature programs for the department that will help us delineate ourselves from the way business was conducted in the past. KC: You're also a decorated retired U.S. Army officer. How has that aspect of your life and career carried over into the work you currently do? NCY: In the U.S. Army, I spent my last ten years working as a Civil Affairs Officer. The Civil Affairs branch is what I like to call the “local government arm” of the U.S. military. Rather than working in local communities, we deploy and assist foreign governments with engaging and providing essential services for their disenfranchised citizens. It was very rewarding to identify a problem, address that issue, and receive immediate feedback on whether the solution worked or not. That was an effort I wanted to continue after retiring from the Army. That opportunity was provided to me via work in local government, and I’m happy to be afforded the chance to perform that work here in the City of Corpus Christi. KC: What do you find to be some of the greatest challenges when it comes to working as a public servant? Greatest rewards? NCY: Regarding the greatest challenges, I’d say that local government is still the government. Government business moves at a slower pace than what I, and I’m sure we all, would like to see. It’s frustrating at times when you want to assist a citizen with a request quickly, but you can’t. Often, there are processes in place that you must follow, and because of those procedures, the response time is slowed down. It’s a little frustrating, but those measures keep us in compliance with state and federal law, so we must make sure that they are adhered to. One of the greatest rewards is when you finally can deliver a response to a citizen in need. Often, I will receive feedback like, “Wow! I can’t believe someone not only took the time to listen to me, but also got

up and did something about it.” That is very satisfying. It’s great when one of our residents learns that we may not always be able to help as much or as fast we would like to, but we are working very hard on their behalf every day. KC: Where do you see Corpus Christi's greatest potential for growth? NCY: I would say in our downtown area. Our downtown area is underdeveloped and under-occupied. That’s startling given that we are a destination of choice for tourists from around the world. The city has recently agreed to invest $20 million in the municipal marina. In conjunction with the leadership and efforts of the Downtown Management District, I think we are going to do great things with recruiting new businesses, housing, and investments in our city’s economic center. KC: How do you enjoy free time? NCY: What free time? No, really, my free time is spent with my family. Being closer to my family was one of the greatest drivers to my decision to move to Corpus Christi, so I try to spend as much time with them as I can. Being in the military for over 23 years, I missed a lot. My nieces and nephews grew up. I have young cousins that I do not know. I have close friends that I lost contact with over time. Now that I am closer to home, I try to spend every minute either enriching or rebuilding relationships with my loved ones. KC: What are some local businesses you've come to love in the Coastal Bend? NCY: I’m not a big fan of large franchises – I like mom-and-pop shops and familyowned businesses. It’s not uncommon for you to find me in Santa Rosa Restaurant on Saturday or Sunday. While there, I like to drop my truck off at Car Wash America next door. In addition, I’m a fan of Coral Bean Café and Peerless Cleaners. I’m pretty much a creature of habit and maintain the same daily routine. Because of that, I am able to get to know the staff at our small businesses and build relationships that may still exist 15 or 20 years from now.

The Texas Surf Museum

is one of those South Texas institutions that grabs the heartstrings of locals and tourists alike. One of the main must-see attractions in Water Street Market, the Texas Surf Museum has been honoring the history and culture of Gulf Coast surfing since 2005. However, the inception of the local surf community took place well before the 2000s. While many non-Texans might think our neck of the woods, like our whole state, is mostly grazing cattle and oilfields, Corpus Christi’s coastal living flips that notion on its head. While there has always been a strong surf community here, it was catapulted to the forefront in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, thanks in large part to two-time Texas Gulf Coast Surfing Champion and living legend Pat Magee. Magee surfed on the prestigious Dewey Weber Surf Team, named for a leading surfboard manufacturer in southern California, and competed in the United States Surfing Championships in Huntington Beach, California, among many other notable accomplishments in the world of the waves. When the term “surf culture” is used – which nowadays may be thrown around casually – it is referring to an approach to living that goes deeper than just highlighting a hobby. Magee played an integral role in personifying this by being the poster child for surfing as a lifestyle. Usually on a whim, Magee would periodically jet off for a 4-day weekend, fly to Guadalajara, and take a chicken bus to the west coast of Mexico to San Blas and surf. Likewise, if there were times anyone wanted to schedule a meeting with Magee, it would be tentative based on the day’s surf conditions. If there was surf, he had to go surf. And in this way, people grew to see passion personified through Magee’s desire and dedication to the surf lifestyle. Magee was a fundamental player in popularizing the sport in Texas and introducing Texas surf culture to rest of the country, and the world as a whole. In 1967, when Magee was just a junior in high school, he joined his buddy Mike Lee in renting out floats and boards to locals in a small building at the dune line along the beach in Port Aransas. By 1969, he set up his own shop after buying Island Surf Shop at the corner of Beach and Station Street – and thus, Pat Magee’s Surf Shop was born. Magee hit it big with this business, where he had everything from surfboards to boogie boards (known as rubber surf rafts back in the day), and sold all sorts of island-life apparel like swimming suits and flip-flops. Because of his history with the Dewey Weber Surf Team, he made a deal with them to purchase all of the trade-in surfboards for his rental business. The genius in this was that Magee wound up being the only retailer offering California name brand boards in the Coastal Bend area. Following this trend, he later introduced popular surfwear brands like Hang Ten and O.P., which were also exclusive to his shop. These

unique offerings quickly led to Pat Magee’s Surf Shop gaining major notoriety and a band of loyal customers. Word spread even to travelers who were coming to the coast to experience the Texas surfing scene, and just the magic of Port Aransas in general, and who knew immediately where to get the best rentals in town. Pat Magee’s Surf Shop also hosted events that brought in famous surfers from around the world, including the annual Robert August Weekend, and sponsored local surf contests and events. Suffice it to say, the presence of Pat Magee’s Surf Shop, and really Magee himself, not only helped nurture the South Texas surf scene, but brought it to life. Take Robert August, of The Endless Summer fame, for example. Magee met August on a surfing trip in San Blas, Mexico. The pair created an instant connection, and August would go on to bring his legendary surf team, consisting of countless surf icons, to Magee’s shop for annual promotions. The Texas surf craze was alive and well, and thanks to Magee, a huge portion of it existed right here in the Coastal Bend. At the height of its success, Magee’s retail business had close to a dozen Pat Magee’s stores across Texas in San Marcos, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Padre Island, and College Station. Like many other businesses that had been thriving during the 1980s, the decline of the oil and real estate markets made staying afloat financially difficult. However, the original Pat Magee’s in Port Aransas kept its doors open for 35 years, until Magee and his wife, Mary Lynn, decided to retire in 2005. The Pat Magee brand remains an iconic symbol of Texas surf culture. By the 1970s, surf culture was on fire. It didn’t take much for people to equate a beachside town with watersports, but it was more than that. The competitive surf arena was gaining traction and a dedicated surf community made riding the waves serious business. This also meant many pieces of what would later become token memorabilia came through the shop doors, and eventually became what we now associate with iconic surfing moments on the Gulf Coast – many of which are now located in the Texas Surf Museum.


Together with Brad Lomax, owner of Water Street Restaurants and the Texas Surf Museum, Magee helped to populate the museum with boards, photos, tools, newspaper and magazine clippings, you name it. To this day, the walls of the museum are lined with surfboards which tell a rich history of moments worth encapsulating for years to come. The Pat Magee Exhibit & Collection at the Texas Surf Museum draws fans and tourists from around the country because of Magee’s status as a famed figure in the Texas surfing world. One of the most popular exhibits curated for the Texas Surf Museum was the tribute to the 50th anniversary of Bruce Brown's surf movie The Endless Summer. Legendary filmmaker Brown, renowned surfboard designer Mike Hynson, and surfing gurus Robert August, Robert "Wingnut" Weaver, and Paul Straugh, were all in attendance for the opening of the exhibition in May 2015 – a full 50 years after the documentary was released. But Magee’s involvement in the art world doesn’t end there: In 1999, he organized the Surfin’ Art exhibit at the Art Museum of South Texas. The exhibition was a celebration of surfing art, aesthetics, and subculture that featured paintings, sculptures, and photography inspired by surf culture, made by surf artists. The artists on view included Rick Rietveld, Drew Brophy, and Peter Schroff. This wildly anticipated show opened in the summer of 1999, with surf rock legends The Ventures – who helped define the sound of “surf rock” at the peak of its cult following in the 1950s and 1960s – headlining the exhibition preview. To this day, Magee and his wife Mary Lynn are still very active in the Corpus Christi surf community. The annual Robert August weekend takes place the first weekend of June to celebrate August’s birthday and his contributions to surf culture around the world, as well as his connection to Magee and the Corpus Christi surf community. It’s a longstanding event people look forward to every year, when museum-goers and fans of Magee and August can get one-of-a-kind vintage surf gear signed by both iconic surfers. And the best part is, having legendary status and incredible influence only adds to the desire to meet a cool surfer dude like Magee and hang out with him – which isn’t such a far-fetched idea. Magee can be found hanging around the Texas Surf Museum or around town when he and Mary Lynn aren’t off enjoying the retired life between Punta Mita, Mexico, Port Aransas and Goliad, Texas. Just like the rare, vintage finds Pat Magee has accumulated for his personal surf collection, and those that are now on view at the Texas Surf Museum, Magee, too, is a rare specimen at the center of what made the Coastal Bend’s surf craze what it is today.

oxing is an individual sport. Once you step in the ring, the outcome relies on your mindset and performance. The sport builds character and friendships, and provides physical and mental health benefits. In Corpus Christi, Duke It Out Boxing Club is a gym centered around giving back to the community and providing a safe and encouraging environment for Coastal Bend youth. Established in 2018 by Coach Duke, Duke It Out Boxing Club initially started with three boxers and a coach with aspirations to provide a safe haven for his students. Since the gym’s genesis, Coach Duke partnered with Coach Joe De La Paz to further Duke It Out’s mission by turning the business into a non-profit organization where all the coaches volunteer their time to the kids. In a short amount of time, the club grew from one coach and three boxers to five coaches and 50 boxers. Coach Joe’s sincere determination to give back is evident as he describes how they want the gym to be a second home for the boxers; a bully-free zone where the kids can come and block out any distractions and focus on developing themselves. When talking to his boxers, Coach Joe says, “You are not here just to box. You are here to learn and achieve your goals.” He pushes his boxers to improve both mentally and physically. 50 The Bend

Coach Duke, meanwhile, is the reason for Duke It Out Boxing. Without him, the movement would not have started, or have its ethos of paying it forward. Amid all his effort to organize and champion Duke It Out Boxing, Coach Duke says that “The best part of this is when they win; when they step out of the ring with joy on their face; as they are greeted by their parents after a good fight. Those are the moments I love.” Duke It Out Boxing Club is an oasis, not merely a gym. Coach Joe described how the program has changed the trajectory of lives by introducing boxing as a great workout, as many of his students have benefited from tremendous physical improvements, losing weight and restructuring their body composition. Some boxers benefit from the community around them by building a brother/sisterhood with their colleagues. The sport develops mentally tough people, and if one can find success in the ring, one can find success in any goal worth achieving. “Who knows? We may have the next mayor of Corpus Christi in our gym right now. It’s up to us to provide that space for them,” says Coach Joe. Duke It Out Boxing has aspirations of becoming the next Boys and Girls Club or YMCA of Corpus Christi. Already involved in local events, the team believes in community building and supporting the goals of other organizations in the area. Duke It Out is also holding a fundraiser to support the gym on Oct. 29, with legendary boxer “Sugar” Ray Leonard as a keynote speaker. With all this traction and a strong team, the Duke It Out team could realize its goal of growing into a 300-boxer gym. They may have our next generation's leaders of Corpus Christi in their corner. was basically born in a salon. Not literally, but my mother has owned her own salon since she was in her 20s. My mom, who is now 77, says customers would push my stroller with their feet while she would do their hair. My mom is not only a hairdresser, but an aesthetician as well. When we moved to the United States from Honduras, she was in charge of training the new aestheticians at an upscale New Orleans salon. A few years later, she owned her own salon once again, this time in the United States. For over two decades, my mom has carried her own line of skincare products called MKI New Orleans. MKI stands for Magdalena, Katia, and Ian, which represents my mother, brother, and me. Since the age of five, I have memories of getting facials with my mom at the salon. Skincare has always been of utmost importance to my mother, and let me tell you … she looks amazing for her age. I’m 45 now, and wish I was meticulous about taking care of my skin, but in all honesty, sometimes I am not. I occasionally sleep with my makeup on (gasp), but when I get home late after the 10 PM newscast, sometimes the last thing I want to do is splash cold water on my face. I use makeup remover wipes when I’m too tired, but at least four times a week I take off my makeup properly by using MKI’s makeup remover, followed by the eye makeup remover, and then moisturizer. This has been my routine since I was 24 and started working in news. T

he beachfront views in Port Aransas are spectacular year-round, and Marilyn and J.B. Goodwin get to enjoy them directly from their three-story home in Cinnamon Shore. “I’ve been coming to Port A since I was 5 years old,” says Marilyn, “and my dream has always been to have a home here.” Although her original home is in Austin, some of her favorite memories have been made in Port Aransas – spending time at the beach, walking everywhere, and riding her bicycle around town are just a few, so when she thinks of taking a vacation, Port Aransas is her go-to destination. At Cinnamon Shore, there is something for everyone, but Marilyn was initially reluctant to purchase property there because she preferred something that was closer to town. However,

after J.B. surprised her by renting a home on Cinnamon Shore North, she immediately fell in love with the exotic island feel of the beachfront location, the views, and the community. They ended up leasing a home from an existing owner for three years, and would visit in three 5-night increments, 5 times a year. Over time, Marilyn’s love for the comfortable style of coastal living grew, and she saw it as somewhere that she and J.B. could purchase a second home – so when construction on Cinnamon Shore South began, J.B. decided to build a home there. Marilyn wasn’t fond of living in a construction area, but J.B. wasn’t going to let this opportunity pass by, so he arranged for a bucket truck to show her the views from the three stories the house would have, and she was on board!

Capitalizing on space with a loft or bunk room is an excellent idea for a beach house, especially for visiting guests. This not only increases your sleeping accommodations, but also allows for more activity space.

Now it was time for the fun part. Marilyn was excited to begin decorating her new home, and taking inspiration from the recent renovations to her Austin home, she used the same blue and green palette, but added more oceanfront-inspired touches to match the beachy vibe of the area. She hired designer Susan Castor to help her put her vision together, and once Castor presented her with selections to choose from, Marilyn was ready to put everything together. Don’t be fooled by the color scheme, though. Even though it has a definite appeal, Marilyn wasn’t striving for an everyday beach house. She wanted something fun and funky to enliven the light and airy space of the white walls and sea blues and greens.

She chose colorful wallpaper in whimsical designs to transform an average styled bathroom into a fun place to freshen up. The wallpaper keeps to the oceanic vibe, but displays a variety of designs depicting the beauty of underwater life. The vibrant repeating patterns of the fish, turtles, and underwater plants are displayed in pretty blue and green shades that reflect colors from the sea, and a unique design bearing large jellyfish in a moving pattern pops off a bright coral color. The personality from each wallpaper design creates a bright, fun statement space. Oyster shell light fixtures and sea-inspired art and throw pillows, along with the furniture made from natural materials, complete the beachfront home of Marilyn’s dreams.

Nothing elevates a room quite like colorful and vibrant wallpaper. Every bathroom in the home features a different coastal pattern, bringing even more life into each space.

Home buyers at Cinnamon Shore are required to name their home, and rather than choose a typically beachy name, Marilyn wanted something that was a metaphor for her and J.B.’s lives. Since they’re elderly home buyers, Marilyn chose the name “Ebb Tide” to symbolize that while their time is ebbing away, ebb tide is also the best time to find the most spectacular seashells and things you’ve never seen on the beach before, just like her discovery of Cinnamon Shore.

Thanks to the gorgeous views from all three floors – the dunes from the first floor, the relaxing water from the second, and the entire beach from the master bedroom on the third – Marilyn’s home is an aesthetic masterpiece. In fact, Marilyn notes that the dreamy view makes her second-floor patio, complete with a table and Adirondack chairs to relax, a favorite among her guests to gather for great conversations and watching the ocean. Aside from the great sense of community in Port Aransas, Marilyn notes that some of her inspiration to build this home comes from a conversation she had with her mother. “I thought about something my mother used to say,” she recalls, “we’d go to the nursery to buy plants and I would get the biggest geranium and she would get a small one. When I asked her why, she said it was because she liked to watch it grow.” Marilyn decided this would be her mantra for this home: She loves looking out the window every day and watching the community grow. unflowers are native to the Americas. Native Americans have cultivated them for more than 5,000 years – the Incas and Aztecs used sunflowers extensively in religious ceremonies, and tribes from Canada to South America harvested them for food, medicine, and dye. After Cortez sent some home to Spain, the flowers grew in popularity throughout Europe, but it was in Russia where sunflower production exploded. Peter the Great spearheaded the movement, and by the 1800s, Russia was the leading global producer of sunflower seeds and sunflower oil. The Russians bred an amazing array of sunflower varieties, some still considered among the best in the world, such as the popular “Russian mammoth.” By the 1960s, production took root in the United States on an industrial scale. Today, sunflowers are grown by vast commercial farms on the same land where Native Americans cultivated them on a small scale for centuries. Sunflowers grow very tall. The shorter varieties rise to three feet, but the tallest – such as the “silver leaf” variety, which is native to the Coastal Bend – grow to a towering 18 feet in height. Sunflowers are not suitable for pots. They are also not best planted in small gardens, where they can quickly dominate and shade out other plants. They do make a great summer windscreen for gardens. Native Americans frequently planted them in hedgerows on the windward side of their Three Sister gardens to protect more delicate vegetables from the wind. Sunflowers are powerful attractors of birds, bees, and other friends of the garden. They also absorb huge amounts of water; a sunflower hedge can slow runoff during the rainy season by holding the water in their thick stalks. At the end of the season, cut all sunflowers at the base of the stem and burn them – their ash is one of the best fertilizers for the garden. Or, line the base of a compost pile with sunflowers, where the lignum-rich stalks will vitally enhance the finished compost.

Spacing, 12” to 18”. Height, 3’ to 20’. Grow any preferred varieties. Full sun. Plant March through July by seed in well-drained soil. Add compost and pastured poultry manure. Water until established and then weekly or as needed. To form hedgerow, till soil in desired location 3’ wide and as long as needed, then broadcast seeds by hand (can walk on bed to stamp into soil) and water deeply. No thinning required. No pests.

Sunflowers are too big for small, orderly gardens. Plant sunflowers any place tall, vigorous flowers will add vibrancy to the landscape. Plant as a seasonal hedge or summer shade for more delicate garden flowers. Clip sunflowers when the massive heads begin droop and look down. Hang flowers upside-down in paper bags in a cool, dry place until seeds fall to the bottom. Store seeds in freezer until ready to use.

Sunflowers are used to make rope, paper, and even latex. Sunflowers are also hyperaccumulators, which means they can draw large amounts of toxic chemicals from the soil. Planting sunflowers, then removing and safely burning the mature stalks, can help cleanse poisoned soils. They can also help reclaim marshes due to their ability to draw water from soil; they are planted extensively in the Netherlands to help convert marshes into arable land.

D

ating back as far as the 1920s, Downtown Corpus Christi was a thriving, hustling, and bustling area. After The Port of Corpus Christi opened in 1926, the population more than tripled, making Corpus Christi the fastestgrowing city in Texas at the time. But as the city continued to build outward, it paved its way into the Southside of Corpus Christi, directing the people of the city to that area and leaving little to no foot traffic in the downtown area. As the growth of Corpus Christi swells again, we are excited to see the revitalization of the Downtown area and the influx of people that comes with it. It was around the 1940s when Peoples Street became a popular hub for a lively arts and culture scene in downtown Corpus Christi. Creativity was found on every corner. This vitality faded over the years, leaving behind lifeless streets filled with boarded-up buildings and accompanying eerie feelings among locals. Downtown was no longer the place to be, and the Southside of Corpus Christi had really taken over. But today, as the multimillion-dollar development of downtown is unfolding, we are seeing life being cast back into the iconic neighborhood. This sparked the partnership between two local entities, 20/20 Vintage and El Local Collective. Together, Monica Ellison and Sam Chamberlain plan to help bring that life and culture back to Peoples Street in the form of The People’s Market.

On the third Saturday of every month, The People’s Market is held in a parking lot on Peoples Street. Their idea is to is to bring the energy back into the area and to “recreate that bustle that Downtown Corpus Christi used to have,” says Monica Ellison, owner of 20/20 Vintage. With the community in mind, their focus is to bring in items that are baked, created, or made through local artisans. With the market, organizers bring local makers together and offer a platform for them to sell their goods – not only to people from the community, but to tourists, as well. Local makers, vendors, artists, food trucks, live DJs, and more come together to create a unique atmosphere that benefits the community and the economy. But co-creators Ellison and Chamberlain do not stop there; in addition to hosting the market every month, they also feature a local charity that receives a portion of market proceeds. “Our whole purpose, really, is to be by the people, for the people,” said Chamberlain of El Local Collective. “So we want to really uplift those organizations and vendors who are very local to Corpus Christi, and who are maybe just starting or who need that extra push.”

The People’s Market is always accepting applications for local artisans, vendors, live musicians, and charities to partner with each month. They are hopeful their list of vendors will continue to grow, allowing them to host as many local makers as possible – especially vendors that are making handmade, homemade, or repurposed items, as opposed to mass-produced or high-fashion items. “We want to help our environment, too,” Chamberlain says passionately. “I think we are very conscious with what it is that we are doing and how it is that we feel like we are able to give back to the community.”

s the summer season moves in, getting outdoors and spending time in the sun is a top priority. With businesses slowly getting back to their regularly scheduled programing, summer plans might look a little different this year. That's where Pretty Picnics comes into the picture. This vibrant and aesthetically pleasing business is dedicated to creating the most elaborate and memorable picnic experience for locals. While picnics have been considered a summer pastime among outdoor enthusiasts for centuries, Pretty Picnics took a different route. Due to COVID-19 limiting social gatherings and canceling many planned events, founder and creator Miranda Bass came up with her own special idea. She says, “When I first started the planning process, I was like, ‘Can I even do this? Who's gonna want to go out during a pandemic?' “I realized that people still wanted to celebrate special moments like birthdays, anniversaries, or proposals, but because of the restrictions, we had to celebrate those moments in a more intimate way,” Bass continued.

It didn't take long to turn her vision into a reality. With the help of some close friends, Bass was able to bring her concept of Pretty Picnics to life. “The next day, I texted three of my closest friends and told them I wanted to start a public picnic business,” Bass says. Coming from the event planning industry, Bass is able to pull her knowledge and skills for curating a scene and pour them into the Instagram-worthy setups you’ll find when turning to Pretty Picnics. No detail gets left unattended – from the color scheme of the setup to the florals on the table. Another great aspect of Pretty Picnics is the ability to work with other local businesses. Due to the elaborate nature of her work, she finds multiple opportunities to showcase the skillsets of other businesses within her setups. Often pulling from her event planning experience, Bass’s decorative ideas are intricately planned and coordinated seamlessly. Bohemian Babe, Romantic Ivy, and Peachy Keen are just a few of the picture-perfect themes to choose from. “Bohemian Babe is actually one of my favorites, because it was one of the original themes,” Bass says. No matter what picnic she is planning, Bass always tries to leave a lasting impression on her clients. “I want them to experience great customer service. I want them to know we're here for them and make their picnic dreams come true,” she says. Helping her clients make memories is one of many reasons Bass enjoys running Pretty Picnics. Whether she is planning a picnic for a graduation or a proposal, the intent is always the same. “It just struck a chord in me,” she says. “I cried; I can't believe I get to do something I love and be a part of people’s lives.”

The Mayor’s Big Bang Celebration is officially back! After moving the fireworks show to celebrate New Year’s Eve in 2020, the annual tradition will once again be held on Independence Day. The City of Corpus Christi is teaming up with presenting sponsor H-E-B for the spectacular event. Beginning at 9:30 PM on July 4, 2021, the free H-E-B nighttime starbursts will be set off from a barge located in the Corpus Christi Bay just north of People’s Street T-Head. J

uly 4th has long been an American holiday to celebrate freedom and liberty. It also serves as a way to gather with family and share a delicious meal. For centuries, Americans threw extravagant soirees with sevencourse meals for neighbors, family, and friends. These revolutionary days, when independence was new and the fear of plague and famine were common fodder for dinner table talk, the July 4th menu consisted of cold boiled ham or smoked mackerel, accompanied by new potatoes and lettuce a la mayonnaise, plus macaroons and pineapple pudding for dessert. Recipes were rarely written down, instead passed on to younger generations through sweat equity in the kitchen. On rare occasions, a schooled cook would jot their contribution in rote directions with perfunctory vagueness. Replicating these recipes today often takes a keen knowledge of the colloquial dialect and antiquated measuring system. One such recorded recipe was attributed to the vastly unpopular Commander in Chief of the British forces during the 1750s, John Loudoun. Loudoun was deemed incompetent on all accounts, except perhaps in his lyrical recipe composition, which made the directions easier to recall. His recipe for apple pudding can be read on the right. We adapted this dessert recipe, as well as two others that commemorate the birth of our nation. Judy Cunningham Croly’s recipe for “Independence Cake” dates back to 1870 and likely fed an entire village. Her original recipe can be read on the right. We rounded off the dessert table by including a traditional strawberry shortcake with the classic biscuit base, plus fresh strawberries and whipped cream. It’s true that our gatherings look different these days – hot dogs swimming in mustard and relish, slow-roasted brisket resting on a homemade tortilla, a red Solo cup filled with frothy beer. But maybe not so much has changed since those centuries ago; we continue to value independence and a good meal.

John Loudoun's Apple Pudding Recipe Reads: If you would have a good pudding, observe what you’re taught: — Take two pennyworth (six) of eggs, when twelve for the groat (fourpence): And of the same fruit that Eve had once chosen, Well pared and well chopped, at least half-a-dozen; Six ounces of bread, let your maid eat the crust, The crumbs must be grated as small as the dust; Six ounces of currants from the stones you must sort, Lest they brake out your teeth, and spoil all your sport; Five ounces of sugar won’t make it too sweet; Some salt and some nutmeg will make it compleat, Three hours let it boyle, without hurry or flutter, And then serve it up without sugar or butter.

Judy Cunningham Croly’s Independence Cake Recipe Reads: “Twenty pounds of flour, fifteen pounds of sugar, ten pounds of butter, four dozen of eggs, one quart of wine, one quart of brandy, one ounce of nutmegs, three ounces each of cinnamon, cloves, and mace, two pounds of citron, five pounds each of currants and raisins, and one quart of yeast. Frost it, and dress it with box and rose leaf.”

Strawberry Shortcake Makes 6 individual cakes PREP TIME: 20 minutes COOK TIME: 10-15 minutes INGREDIENTS: STRAWBERRY FILLING:

2 pints strawberries, sliced 1/2 cup sugar SHORTCAKE:

3 cups all-purpose flour 2 tbsp sugar 6 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 1 1/2 cup butter, cold and cubed 1 1/4 cup milk WHIPPED CREAM:

2 cups heavy whipping cream 3 tbsp sugar 1 tsp vanilla DIRECTIONS:

Combine strawberries and sugar in a large bowl and refrigerate overnight to let the strawberries release their juices. Preheat oven to 425F. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Using a food processor, pastry cutter, or fork, cut butter into dry ingredient mixture until butter is about pea-sized. Finally, add in milk and form a soft dough. Transfer dough to a well-floured surface and roll out until 1” thick. Trifold dough onto itself and cut into rounds using a small can, glass, or biscuit cutter about 2-3” in diameter. Reshape remnant dough into a ball and lightly flatten with your rolling pin. Cut remaining dough into cylinders and evenly space biscuits on a baking sheet. Bake biscuits for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from oven and transfer to a cooling rack. Using a hand or standing mixer, whip cream in a cold bowl for 2 minutes, until stiff peaks form. To assemble cakes, cut biscuits in half. Spoon about 1/4 cup strawberries on the bottom half, cover with 1/3 cup whipped cream, and top with remaining half of biscuit. Enjoy immediately and again, as desired, for up to three days if stored in the refrigerator. 90 The Bend

1/2 loaf enriched bread (like challah, cinnamon raisin, or babka), blended into crumbs 6 egg yolks 6 apples, cored 1 cup raisins 1/2 cup sugar 3/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup whole milk 1 cup whipping cream DIRECTIONS:

Working in batches, puree apples in a blender or food processor. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Continue to cook, stirring frequently to prevent the bottom from burning, until the mixture is homogenous, about 30 minutes. Serve warm or chilled.

1/4 cup brandy 1/4 cup currants 1/4 cup raisins 1 1/4 cup sugar 8 tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature 2 whole eggs, plus 2 egg yolks 1/2 cup warm milk 2 1/4 tsp (1 package) active dry yeast 2 cups flour 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp cloves 1 tsp mace 1 tbsp orange zest 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp nutmeg DIRECTIONS:

In a small bowl, soak currants and raisins in brandy for at least 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350F. Coat bundt pan with nonstick baking spray. In a large bowl or the bowl of a standing mixer, beat butter and sugar until light yellow. Add eggs, milk, and yeast, mixing well. In a separate bowl combine remaining ingredients, including reserved boozy fruit. Mix together until a smooth batter forms. Spoon batter into prepared pan(s) until 3/4 full. Cover with a tea towel and let rise 1-2 hours. Bake for 35-45 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. othing complements rising temperatures like a glass of freshly squeezed lemonade. One of our favorite beverages, lemonade is incredibly refreshing, thanks to the organic balance of sweet sugar and lemon tartness. This season, Surfin' Lemons owner Libbie Henry introduces freshly squeezed lemonade with a fun fruit flair for the perfect refreshment to create and share. "We wanted something that everyone could enjoy together on a hot summer day," says Henry. We luckily found the perfect trailer that crossed off all of our boxes. We had fun redecorating and remodeling it to turn it into our own, then we applied for all of the permits needed, and soon enough we were in business," she says enthusiastically. 92 The Bend

ucked away in Rockport’s Cove Harbor hides a tasty little slice of paradise. If you’re feeling pina coladas, have an eye for boat watching, or are thinking about that catch of the day, it’s time to find Paradise Key Dockside Bar and Grill. You can drive up or sail in: The tropical restaurant rests right on the edge of the water, with its huge patio overlooking great views of coastal sunsets. In its unique menu, Paradise Key combines nods to Cajun, Hawaiian, and traditional American cuisine styles. A real Texas-style gem in particular is the Pecan Crusted Snapper. “This dish really represents South Texas,” laughs Paradise Key’s executive chef Jayson Jones. “You do have sport fishing, especially snapper fishing. There’s so much of that around here. Then, well, one of Texas’s biggest draws is the pecans. Nothing to me really says Texas like pecans, whether you’re east, north, west, or south.” The rich filet is hand-battered in a seasoned flour with crushed sweet pecans, which make the snapper all the more savory. It’s not fried – that slight crisp comes from a slow, buttery pan-searing. It’s blanketed with Paradise Key’s in-house warm, creamy cilantro sauce, and paired with any two sides. “If it were me, I’d go for the green beans with it,” advises Jones. “And I would probably not shy away from that mac and cheese, the white cheddar.” 96 The Bend

The pecan snapper has been one of the restaurant's longest-standing, most popular dishes in its history – and this Rockport treasure has been here through it all. The Paradise Key crew has remained Rockport Strong throughout Hurricane Harvey and the recent pandemic. “It’s a unique time in Paradise Key history, which is a great history,” says general manager Kent Harman. “We’re committing harder than ever to make this all it can be. We’re aiming to keep the high expectations, elevating what’s already good; the pandemic gave us some operational challenges that we pushed through successfully.” Paradise Key doesn’t just aim to feed you great food, as the kick-back atmosphere and the friendly staff are key components of the experience. The full bar offers cold margs, spicy bloody marys, and a hand-selected, seasonal craft beer menu. Luckily, front of house managers Jason Brown and Austin Denison have a palate for beer, and can happily recommend a pint to pair. Amid the post-WWII growth in Corpus Christi, the city needed a civic center for its increasing population – and so this facility came to be. In 1954, the local Gold Star Mothers dedicated the Memorial Coliseum to the 400 Nueces County residents who died in WWII, and affixed a plaque listing their names to the building. This iconic structure by local architect Richard Colley garnered national attention and awards, and was featured in magazines, even before it was constructed. Its roof design had a 224-foot unsupported span, the world’s longest at the time of construction. Over the following decades, some of music’s biggest names played the coliseum, from Elvis to KISS,

and including the recording of Selena’s Grammy awardwinning album Live! in 1993. It was a common sight to see hundreds of people lined up outside, either to purchase tickets or waiting for the doors to open. It hosted events from graduations to circuses, and saw the beginnings of the Islander basketball team. The innovative design of the building had one downfall: It wasn’t possible to build onto it to expand the space. In 2000 voters approved construction of what eventually became the American Bank Center, and ideas were floated for what to do with the empty coliseum. Ultimately, the memorial plaque moved to Sherrill Park, mounted on a wall of bricks saved from the demolition in 2010. And with that, Memorial Coliseum moved into our memory.
