April Opens

A

pril. Its name is derived from the Latin word aperire, which means “to open”. In Tehachapi it is a time when the oak buds swell and flowers begin to unfold their petals. It is also believed that the month of April is named after the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. It feels like this month symbolizes innocence and a sublimely wondrous time for renewal, with longer days, fresh morning dewy smells, and the sweet sound of birds’ songs. Indeed, legions of lexicons about April barely do justice to this most magnificent time of the year. As you open this April issue, I am certain you will enjoy these stories about our community and please remember to support our sponsors who make this all possible.

TEHACHAPI LIVING

BY ELISA M. BARTON JACKIE WOOD | JACKIE WOOD PHOTOGR APHY

We thank Dr. Raj for bringing you this month’s feature story.

“Authenticity, intuition and faith, creativity, meaningful work, gratitude, and joy.” Popular author and research professor, Brené Brown, has included these attributes in her “10 Guideposts for Wholehearted Living.” In contrast, she also urges her readers to relinquish a mentality that dwells on: “what people think, need for certainty, comparison, and ‘supposed to’ and self-doubt.” Linda Pettitt, a Tehachapi resident known to many locals, whether as a retired elementary school teacher, former high school choir director, or owner of Linda’s Cakes ‘n Things, has been living “wholeheartedly” long before the guideposts were published. It is easy to read through the positive recommendations of Brown’s list and see Linda; she exemplifies all the qualities of “wholehearted living.” Linda’s authenticity – to live her Southern heritage – is strongly present at her in-home bakery in Golden Hills. Here, she has created cakes for hundreds of local celebrations since Kern County’s Cottage Food Operation permit came into effect in 2013, allowing this type of home business. Under the crystal chandelier in her dining room, near a wall-to-wall collection of glass cake stands, she has met with hundreds of engaged couples as they plan their special day. “I ask them to tell the story of how they met,” Linda says. “I always want to get to know them before I make their cake.” She is delighted to practice authentic hospitality while running a business right from her home. Born in Alabama, Linda relocated to California as a child. When her father was drafted during World War II, she moved back to Alabama for a brief time with her mother and sister to live with her maternal grandmother. Southern culture left an indelible mark on Linda’s worldview. She remembers that in the South, “If someone’s coming, you make a pound cake.” Her ample cookbook collection includes Ultimate Pound Cakes, a collection of 85 recipes, that she is quick to point out, is edited by Phyllis Hoffman DePiano, an Alabama native who also publishes a family of well-known magazines. Linda tells the story of when she met the renowned editor. It was years ago when Linda and her late mother had made plans to visit Alabama. While for others, shyness, or the refrain “such a thing just isn’t done,” might have acted as a barrier to what would happen next, these things do not direct Linda’s heart. She called the Hoffman Media office in Birmingham, Alabama to let them know that she would be in town and would love to visit. Although the secretary had to be convinced (and was then firm on limiting the visit to a brief half hour) Linda and her group ended up spending a joyful afternoon with Phyllis Hoffman DePiano, enjoying one another’s company as Southern women. It was a highlight of Linda’s life and is just one story that illustrates the gusto with which she lives. Linda’s traits of intuition and faith are evident in a beautiful story she tells of another trip she planned, this time with the Tehachapi High School Show Choir, an organization which she founded and directed in the early 2000s. Under Linda’s leadership, the all-girls choir made it their goal in 2002 to sing at the site where the World TEHACHAPI LIVING

They gave her much practical advice which she would soon apply in the next chapter of her life. After retiring from 38 years as a teacher, Linda earnestly followed her passion for baking. With her niece, she opened Idy’s – named after her mother – a lunch/dinner restaurant on Tucker Road, where she baked fresh rolls every morning. This venture was followed by several other food businesses. “Idy’s was first,” Linda reminisces. “Then the bakery on Tehachapi Boulevard until I outgrew it. Then two friends and I opened Tehachapi Culinary Studio which is now Mill Street Kitchen. We catered, I baked cakes, and we all three taught cooking classes. After that, I opened the bakery in my home.” Through Linda’s Cakes ‘n Things, as her bakery business is called, Linda has crafted wedding cakes for hundreds of couples over a span of 20 years. Her sweets have been a feature of Tehachapi’s downtown Wine Walks. Reading her online menu is a mouthwatering experience: “Spread between layers or piped into cupcakes, my cake fillings can provide a surprising splash of flavor to almost any cake. Have fun finding a filling you and your guests will love. Options include: Chocolate Ganache, Piña Colada, Cream Cheese, Oreos & Cream, Peanut Butter, Lemon Curd, Strawberry Curd, Raspberry Curd, and Bavarian Cream with Berries.” “I always put a filling in my cupcakes,” Linda confides. “It makes them really, really moist.” The pleasures of small-town living are not lost on Linda. She delights in the fact that she has made wedding cakes and then baby shower cakes for her former elementary school students, now grown up. She loves running into them in the grocery store and meeting their children. “I love kids,” she says warmly, “I have always loved kids.” Linda’s joy and gratitude are seen in her love of family. With her husband, Robert, she has raised 6 children. Her kitchen bookshelf is filled with cookbooks and photos of her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. Her hallways also showcase more framed smiling faces – some of children now grown up and some of babies just welcomed into the world. Linda relates how a visitor once commented that they had never thought of putting framed photos from ankle level on up on the hall wall. “But that’s what you have to do when you have so much family!” Linda laughs. Looking back over her life, with all the dedication to work, receptivity to joy, and care for others she has practiced, Linda encourages those around her to wholeheartedly pursue whatever they want out of life. “I never thought defeat,” she says, “Why? Because when you work hard and when you love, you reach your goal.”

Linda’s home is a haven of timeless décor, Southern hospitality, and sweet treats.

Visit lindascakesnthings.com to see Linda’s menus and cake photo galleries.

Of her cakes Linda says, “I enjoy creating special desserts for all occasions and believe that it is my way of making others happy.”

April 17 is National Haiku Poetry Day. Carol Andersen, writing teacher at Heritage Oak School, shares a collection of original poems by some of her students.

H

ave you heard of haiku? Perhaps an English teacher assigned these beautiful, short, three-lined poems to you. When you wrote, you were joining in with Japanese poets from hundreds of years ago. Haiku began as the opening lines to longer verses (called hokku) written at social gatherings. Eventually, the poets began to publish just these opening lines and called them haiku. Traditional Japanese haiku is an expression of nature; of one specific moment in time. Some English haiku use a 5 -7- 5 syllable count for each line, but it is not necessary. Usually, haiku poems follow the pattern of a short line, a longer line, and a short line. They do not need to be complete sentences, contain metaphor or simile, but they do offer a “word picture” of the moment. Heritage Oak students studied several examples of haiku before trying their hand at writing the following poems.

he concept of the Free Library on Maple Street is not a new one. It resembles those of the non-profit organization known as the “Little Free Library” that has been around for the last couple of years. The only difference is that the Free Library on Maple Street is not registered with the “Little Free Library” – but the rules are just the same: if you take a book or other items that are in the box, try to leave an item in return for someone else.

I was introduced to the concept years ago when I visited my hometown, Alameda, California. I must have seen a library of this kind on at least every other fence post. I fell in love with the idea. As a child my grandfather made it a routine for us to go to our local library every week, checking out the maximum limit of books. He made sure that I read every single one before our next visit. He taught me the value of books and made me understand the time and effort it took the author to write them. In June of 2020, after learning that our usual volunteer services for the Tehachapi Mountain Rodeo were canceled, my partner Candy and I still wanted to do something for the community that we have been a part of for over twenty years. That is when I told Candy, “If we can’t work the rodeo, we are making the book box.” And that is what we did. It took a week to construct. Candy built the box; I painted and decorated it. We filled it with children’s books. We have so many children on our street – I wanted them to be able to visit the box and get books that they might not be able to access from the public library since it had been forced to restrict its hours. Soon, I added snacks and coloring books with crayons. After a week I began noticing books and snacks were missing. It was starting to work! But no books were being replaced. That is when I took to social media. I was so pleased with the response I got. By social media and word of mouth we began to see donations come in! Now, every night I go out to check the box. I make sure that only familyfriendly products are in there and I sort out the newest donations. When clothes are donated, I wash and bag them. I also check the expiration date on food items. With the arrival of spring, we recently gave our Free Library on Maple Street a little makeover, just to spruce it up. We added a Free Pantry next to it where people in need are able to grab a snack or canned food. Both boxes are in the front of 410 Maple Street in downtown Tehachapi. I hope that we will be able to continue with this project for years to come and that it will inspire more people to make Free Libraries in front of their homes, too!

Baking a Difference BY LEANA BOWMAN

M

otivated by an article about bakers in Seattle baking for local food banks, I put out a simple question over Facebook asking if there were any residents interested in baking for neighbors in need. The response was overwhelmingly positive, so I created a Facebook group, Bear Valley Bakers. The mandate of the group: to provide a friendly means for residents and friends interested in baking bread and goodies to share those goodies with Tehachapi seniors and residents in need of “lovin’ from the oven.” In one day, 48 members joined. Not prepared for such an outpouring, my next fretful thoughts were, “How am I going to manage this group? How are we going to distribute the baked goods?” Thankfully, Tehachapi residents Rachel Axdahl and Deb Statland offered to help administer the group, and Justina Engen of the Tehachapi

A plethora of baked goods from the very first “bakarama” this year.

Humanitarian Relief Organization, offered to partner with the bakers to distribute the “lovin’ from the oven.” On Tuesday, January 26, 2021 the products of the group’s first “bakarama” were delivered to the humanitarian relief group. The efforts of fifteen bakers resulted in dozens of cookies, bread loaves, muffins, breakfast burritos, soft pretzels, brownies, and more, individually wrapped and packaged for gifting to those in need. The group, now 65 strong, has “bakaramas” scheduled for the 2nd and 4th Tuesday every month for the rest of the year so the humanitarian relief group can distribute on Wednesdays. Starting Bear Valley Bakers is an answer to my prayers. Since moving to Tehachapi

in August of 2018, I really had not found a philanthropic cause or group with which to align. It is no surprise that the story of the Seattle bakers would be an inspiration. Back in the 90s, my family started a homeless meal program, Neighbor to Neighbor, in Redondo Beach, that served a hot meal to 150 people each Thursday night. As a Soldier’s Angel for many years, I have been involved with sending goodie boxes and baked goods to soldiers overseas. Bear Valley Bakers is not just about providing food to those in need, it is about providing the love and warm hug that homemade baked goods represent. We want Tehachapi neighbors to know we care.

If you are interested in being a baker, apply to the group and answer the membership questions. Membership is open to all Tehachapi residents those outside Bear Valley must just be willing to deliver their baked goods to Bear Valley. Once a member, a meal train is set up to sign up for the “bakarama”. The bakers donate all the ingredients and time to the effort. The frequency of baking is totally up to each baker, with the goal that the group effort is fun and comfortable for all who participate. Baked goods are delivered to Leana’s home, Sunday through Tuesday of a delivery week, and she shuttles them to the humanitarian relief group. You do not have to be a baker to participate. Some participants provide donations through the meal train so that baking supplies and packaging materials can be purchased by the group to help support the bakers’ efforts. The Joy of Gardening BY A.P. WHYTE

W

hether you are a long-time gardener or an aspiring green thumb, springtime rouses us off the couch and outside into the yard. This year has inspired many of us to put aside our past trepidations and muster the courage to learn lots of new things. Many people learned to bake bread over the winter and discovered jigsaw puzzles for homespun comfort during trying times. Perhaps you’ve thought about a garden or you’ve been itching to get back out there if you already have one? The time is now! DREAMING GREEN The satisfaction gained by creating something beautiful or growing your own food or even the psychic rewards of just unplugging from a stressful world cannot be overstated. Whether you are alone or share the work and experience with your family, it’s good exercise, feeds both the mind and body, and it’s fun! There are many resources available. Gardeners as a group are generally happy to share their knowledge and

garden centers are great places to learn. And of course, everything you ever wanted to know and everything you didn’t think you needed to know is on the internet – there are garden books galore on Amazon. Don’t forget about public gardens! Plan a road trip to one of these to learn about unusual cultivars and gain design ideas in the process. INCH BY INCH, ROW BY ROW There are home gardens for everyone no matter your interest, need, or desire. Different plants may have different needs, amount of sun, nutrient requirements, water amounts, etc. Success will be more attainable if like plants are grouped together. Some benefit by growing together with symbiotic neighbors or companion plants. Certain aromatic herbs can help keep insects at bay and lessen the need for pesticides. If deer are an issue, choose plants that are deerresistant or consider fencing a manageable area. There’s nothing like the sweet smell of spring, the gentle breezes, the warm earth, and the quiet peace that soothes the soul; it is a special time of year. Be good to yourself: get outside and get dirty!

A.P. Whyte is a master gardener, rosarian, and garden designer, transplanted to Tehachapi by way of Connecticut and Texas.

Get to Know the Borzoi BY ELAINE KILMER │ PHOTO CREDIT ELAINE KILMER

hen I was a teen, I was a member of a police dog training Explorer program in Bakersfield. One of our community service events was at the Kern County Kennel Club dog shows every year. We worked as ring clean-up; a fancy way to say pooper scoopers. It was at this event that I got my first glimpse of the most majestic type of creature I had ever seen: four tall, pure white dogs, trotting in unison, hair flowing, a light springy gait. My breath literally caught in my chest and my desire to learn more about these mythical-looking canines was set in motion. This was my introduction to the borzoi breed. The borzoi is an ancient breed of sighthound: a hunting dog that uses vision, speed, and agility, rather than scent and trailing, to catch its quarry. Other examples of sighthounds include: greyhounds, whippets, afghan hounds, salukis, Irish wolfhounds, Scottish deerhounds, Rhodesian ridgebacks, and basenjis. The borzoi breed was developed in the 1600s, in Czarist Russia. Large, athletic, and elegant, they were bred in vast kennels by the Russian nobility and used for coursing large and small game. In Tolstoy’s War and Peace there are accounts of these Russian hunts. Previously known in this country as the Russian Wolfhound, tells you their primary use, but they were also

used for coursing fox and hare. Racing is something with which I’ve been involved as a borzoi enthusiast. Open field coursing is done on live game (jackrabbits), while lure coursing is done with a motor driven lure that is made of plastic streamers. Lure coursing can involve turns and changes of direction that are meant to test a hound’s agility, while straight racing is meant to test a dog’s speed and sprinting ability over a short (200 yard) distance. Having lived with these dogs for so many years, I can attest to their sweet demeanor and silly personalities. But, just like people, they all have individual quirks and idiosyncrasies. Most are easy-going, quiet, and gentle. The flipside is how fast they can turn into a hunting/running machine, hell-bent

on catching the occasional rabbit that crosses our path. When out walking, they require a high degree of awareness of the environment and a firm grip on the leash. I’m frequently asked if they shed. All I can say is I wish I had bought stock in pet hair rollers and Swiffers. I’ve killed 2 or 3 Dyson vacuum cleaners and now just buy less expensive vacuums that don’t hurt the budget as badly when they need replacing. At my house, we jokingly refer to all their stray fluff as an accessory, as well as a condiment. Currently, I have 4 dogs. Karma just celebrated her 11th birthday. Kissy (7) is my retired courser and consummate clown. Asher (4) lovingly known as “Asher Dasher the Party Crasher,” has been shown and coursed. Elliott (1) will be going back to dog shows when allowed. Hopefully, he will show interest in coursing when things get back to normal. I have loved, shown, raced, and lived with borzoi now for almost 40 years. Little did I know that fateful day at the local dog show so long ago would bless me with a life filled with wonderful friends and experiences, as well as these special dogs.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Advanced Property Management Where You Can Find Peace of Mind BY ELISA M. BARTON

P

eace of mind. It is something we all crave – and will often go the “extra mile” to obtain. Waves, in the form of unknowns, lack of information, and lack of resources, can turn a once placid harbor of mental peace into a churning maelstrom. Have you felt this tension when searching for a new rental property? A home where you can put your feet up and feel the satisfaction of having found your spot? In contrast, perhaps as a property owner you have felt the waves surge as you wonder: “Will I have to interrupt my plans today for a maintenance call?” or “How will I advertise my property now that it is available?” A business that works hard for the peace of mind of tenants and owners alike is Tehachapi’s Advanced Property Management. Owner, Steve Rhodes, says, “Whether you are looking for the perfect home for your family or trying to find a professional and reliable business to manage your residential or commercial property, the staff at Advanced Property Management are here to serve you. We specialize in the leasing, managing, and sales of single and multi-family homes and commercial properties in the Tehachapi area.” Advanced Property Management offers the convenient Online Portal app for its tenants’ use. Here, maintenance can be requested, documents like renters’ insurance

can be stored, and communication with the Advanced Property Management team can be conducted. This app has proven an especially valuable tool in the past year in which “contactless transactions” and “social distancing” have become desirable alternatives to face-to-face interaction. The company’s website, www.tehachapiforrent. com, also offers an easily accessible gallery of vacancies for those in the market for rental property. For property owners, this management company offers a thoughtful list of services geared toward peace of mind. “Advanced Property Management was created for the real estate owner and investor by a real estate owner and investor,” Steve explains. “Our years of experience have enabled us to create practices and procedures, perfected over time…Because we are property owners ourselves, we bring an eye for detail.” Among the services Steve’s company

SPECIALIZING in Residential & Commercial Property Management Our priority lies in your investment

offers to owners are property evaluations, pre-occupancy inspections, advertising and response to ad inquiries, creation of California Bureau of Real Estate approved lease agreements, rent collection, maintenance, annual property inspections, and more – all geared towards good tenant relationships. “As experienced property managers, we have proven methods in settling problems and issues,” Steve states. In the words of author Norman Vincent Peale, “The life of inner peace, being harmonious and without stress, is the easiest type of existence.” Advanced Property Management looks forward to offering you – whether tenant or owner – this “easiest type of existence.” As a small town, small business owner, Steve Rhodes says, “Our mission is to provide exceptionally performing assets and increased equity for our owners, while providing a good value and a great place to live for our tenants.”

M

y interest in lathe work began many years ago when my sister and brother-in-law gave my wife and me a hand-turned ice cream scoop for Christmas. This handmade wooden piece of art was made by my niece, Kiko. I was hooked; this was something I wanted to do. Since they are in Utah, I could not visit Kiko to watch her work, so my research was left to the internet and countless YouTube videos. On a trip a couple of years ago, I visited a neighbor of my family who does extensive wood turning, making bowls, nutcrackers, and lamps in his basement. I got the bug again and told myself, “One day I will buy a lathe and teach myself to turn wood.” In November of 2020 it was time to put my research into action. After my son and I built a new workbench, I purchased a lathe and all the tools necessary to begin making pens, pencils, key chains, ice cream scoops, bottle stoppers, and bottle openers. From the first time I turned on the lathe to make a wood pen, I was hooked. There is something about the art of taking a piece of wood and turning it to make a finished product. After turning the blanks down to the desired shape and thickness, the sanding begins. After extensive sanding with multiple different grits, I use a multistep process to apply sealer and finish. Recently, I also found pouring and turning my own resin blanks to interest me. I purchased a pressure pot to cast clear, bubble-free resin blanks. Under pressure, any air bubbles are eliminated or reduced to a microscopic level. After unmolding the resin blanks, I turn them on the lathe and then sand them through 14 different grits of sandpaper and sanding pads. After applying a polish, the result is a glass-like finish. While I got into lathe work out of a pure desire to create things, it has left me with an abundance of different items. My wife has more pens than any one person should have! I enjoy when I bring a new pen in the house and she says how pretty it is and that she wants it. With containers filling up with my creations, I decided to create an Etsy store, Lone Oak Creationz, so that others could enjoy the pieces. One of my favorite sales was to a family member who ordered 7 pen and pencil sets as Christmas gifts for her employees. It was a pleasure to hear that the presents were well received and even brought tears. As one employee stated, “This is the most beautiful gift I have ever received.” To me, that reaction is better than any amount of money a sale could bring. I just want people to enjoy the finished piece. Coming full circle, I received a phone call from Kiko last week. As other priorities have come into her life, she stopped turning and graciously offered me a huge collection of the materials she still had: various exotic woods and assembly kits. I look forward to using these to create unique new items. I will forever be grateful for Kiko’s inspiration to get me started in lathe turning. It all started with an ice cream scoop.

Sangera Subaru

Putting Love Into the Driving Experience BY ELISA M. BARTON

ake a short drive through our town or scan the Albertson’s parking lot and chances are good that you will see a Subaru or two. Many Subaru models with their all-wheel drive capabilities are ideal for traversing Tehachapi’s country roads and keeping drivers mobile during snowy conditions. You might say they have become an unofficial icon of the Tehachapi lifestyle. If you have been eyeing an Outback, Forester, or other Subaru SUV model from your grocery store parking space through your current windshield, have you ever thought about what it would be like to see Tehachapi through the windows of a new Subaru instead? Sangera Subaru is a family-owned and operated dealership in Bakersfield ready to let you explore the possibility. “Our guests love our refreshing sales process because we go above and beyond to ensure the experience is completely stress-free,” Hassan Halevy, Director of Marketing, says. “We’re not here to pressure you into buying a car. That’s not our style…Come to us any time, and we can chat about your unique wants and needs. We’ll provide you with a price, and we’ll give you your space to consider the offer.” Sangera Subaru also offers an easy-to-navigate website, sangerasubaru.com, full of resources and a special service called Customize Your Deal. “With our Customize Your Deal feature, customers can shop safely from their home or office,” Sales

Manager, Richard Romero explains. It allows you to 1.) Choose your vehicle, 2.) Personalize your payment options, 3.) Value the car you are trading in, and 4.) Apply for financing. “Most of the process is completed before coming into the dealership,” Talia Culbertson, client relationship specialist states. “At Sangera Subaru, the best deal is always the deal you make yourself,” she

adds with a smile. While a car can be a necessity to get you from point A to point B, isn’t it nice when necessities have perks that make your heart feel good that you have invested in them? Sangera Subaru is a company that knows all about helping hearts while helping drivers; they received the 2020 Subaru Love Promise Customer and Community Commitment Award. According to Subaru.com “Only elite Subaru retailers who exhibit remarkable dedication to both pillars of the Love Promise — exceptional service to their customers and extraordinary work in their communities — can earn this award.” From donating a vehicle to Covenant Coffee where former foster youth are given employment opportunities, to hosting a jacket and coat drive in partnership with Kicks for Kids and Victory Family Services, to being a sponsor for Tehachapi’s Cheers to Charity
