MEN'S FIRSTS

TE ATATU 3 : 0 LYNN AVON LONG BALL VERSUS STRUCTURE A brilliant and sunny Autumnal day greeted both sets of players and supporters for this derby clash at Te Atatu Park. Although carrying a few injuries Te Atatu fielded a competitive side against their near neighbours, Lynn Avon. This was an important fixture for both clubs as they vied to improve their points and climb the Conference ladder. Te Atatu began the match with a series of wide attacks and slick passing moves. It was a game showing contrasting styles as Lynn Avon reverted to a long ball direct game and Te Atatu used the width of the pitch to continually stretch them and switch play. Eventually the unending Te Atatu pressure told and a late run from Jake Sears was timed to meet one of the many crosses which had taunted Lynn Avon all afternoon. The Englishman struck his shot powerfully and unopposed from 15 metres to send the ball crashing off the right hand post and put TAT 1 nil to the good. Barely 10 minutes later, Rhys Caples finished a mazy dribble with a low left footed shot to double TAT’s lead. Two nil and looking good. Caples was at it again 5 minutes from halftime with a similar searing low shot and his team mates were delighted to be 3 up against their rivals at halftime. The second half was a more laboured affair although Caples still had time to get his hat trick. Unfortunately his low shot was well saved by the keeper and the half meandered to a 0-0 stalemate. Te Atatu created more chances but were unable to capitalise and increase their final winning margin from 3 nil. A comprehensive win was completed at 4.47 pm to lift Te Atatu a few places up the table into 4th equal. Solid performances at the back from the entire back four ensured the first clean sheet of the season. In midfield Jonathan Navarrete and Jake Sears toiled hard for the team. Seb Vanneste was composed and assured running the central midfield throughout. Shaneel Sharma continues to look dangerous with electric sideline runs and his endeavour and trickery earned the side their first penalty of 2021. Rhys Caples rightly was adjudged man of the match for his brace.

MEN'S RESERVES

TE ATATU 1 : 3 LYNN AVON The reserves boys were looking to make it 3 in a row on Saturday after some comprehensive results coming up against an in form Lynn Avon side. Coach Pete rotated the side and gave an injection of youth. It was the first time this season both reserves and mudrats were in action at the same time this season, and having a big squad it gave some players some much needed game time. Ethan was selected captain for the first time, a very proud moment for the lad who’s been around the reserves set up for 5+ years. The lads started with a hiss and a roar with the Lynn Avon keeper making some 4 saves in the space of 10 seconds within the first 15 mins. The game became cagey after that with the teams just starting to get a feel for eachother. No one really threatening or making a clear chance. The first goal came from a mistake where a miscued clearance caught the Te atatu backline on the back foot and the Lynn Avon striker ran though and slotted a 1 on 1, which was undeserved to say the least. 1-0. 5 minutes before Half time another mistake and some ball watching doubled the lead for LA. 2-0 at half time which wasn’t a reflection of the game at all. Second half started with a soft penalty which gave Lynn Avon their 3rd of the game and put the lads in a tough position. To their credit they battled well to the final whistle and at the 60th minute Adam Bradley looped a beautiful cross (shot) into the top left corner. It gave the ressie boys some wind in their sail and they came home strong, with some better finishing and luck the result could have been the other way. 3-1 final score but the score line flattered the away side. Credit to all the young lads who were either making their ressie debuts or making spots their own. Player of the Day went to Austin Trim who played out of his skin making his first start and looked like he had been playing reserves football for the last few seasons

WOMENS'S FIRSTS

TE ATATU 2 : 0 WEST COAST RANGERS The start of a new season is always tough while you work out the new competition in the league. Off the back of very limited pre-season games and facing the newly formed West Coast Rangers made it difficult to predict how we would go. We have welcomed a bunch of new and talented players this season and can't wait to see what we can make of the season.

After a shaky start, the ladies started to dominate possession but were missing the final connection with our strikers. A few early chances tested the keeper and the team slowly got into the swing of things. Ang Byrne scored her first for the season, capitalizing off the WCR goalkeeper's fumble of Nat Farrell's cross.

We then made it 2-0 with a Bronwyn Caple's special, chipping it over the keeper from well outside the 18 yard box. A rough and very rusty first game but happy to take the 3 points. Player of the day went to new signing Jolyn Collins, for an exceptional first hit out and defensive effort. Thank you to WCR for the hospitality and we look forward to another battle at home.

WOMENS'S DIV 3

TE ATATU 2 : 2 HIBISCUS COAST Woman’s Div 3 The div 3 woman’s team took on Hibiscus Coast for their first game of the season with a few new faces added to the team. The girls played very well scoring two goals early on and playing a very good possession game.

Unfortunately around the 70th minute the tanks started to empty and the talking dropped leading to two goals after tonnes of pressure from the Hibiscus Coast woman. 2-2 seemed to be a fair result at the end of the day and that could’ve ended up in defeat if it wasn’t for stand in goal keeper Telana who kept us in the game for the final 5-10 minutes with some brilliant saves. This week sees the woman take on takapuna who also had a 2-2 result last weekend so will hopefully be another tightly contested match up.

MUDRATS

MUDRATS 4 : 8 AIR FORCE Not a ideal prep for the lads having a late Friday field switch and the numbers not being strong due to the ressies being at home. We trucked on with 12 players and gave it a good crack but the obvious lacking as a group was our fitness and pre season match time. The game was very end to end and we found ourselves down 2 nil early. We traded goals for the next hour and with 5 minutes to go we were at 5-4 down.

With players struggling fitness and injury wise and the Fat Controller and Kirk sharing the reffing duties, we succumb to 3 super quick goals and a 8-4 loss which sounds worse than it was. Some good performances and a couple of great strikes especially from Chadley and Kirk gives hope that with more game-time and fitness the results will pick up. Player of the day was Chadley with a couple of great goals and good energy in the middle. Onwards and hopefully upwards and good luck to all teams again this week. The Fat Controller

STALLIONS VS BIRTHDAY BOYS

STALLIONS 0 : 4 BIRTHDAY BOYS The Birthday Boys started their 2021 season with a big home derby against the Wild Stallions on a glorious Autumnal day at Te Atatu Peninsula Park. The BBs had a barnstorming finish to the 2020 season, but with three pre-season games without a win and missing their talismanic player/coach/manager/wrangler/angry Scotsman Mark McKeown there was a sense of uneasiness at kick-off. These fears were soon put to bed as the BBs started playing their brand of football that had been drilled into them through the years. Fittingly it was Tane Pamatatau who had been doing his best Ryan Mason impression and taking the reins of managing the team who broke the deadlock. From there the BBs were rolling with Jack Alexander menacing the Stallions down the right flank with his usual high work rate proving hard to stop. A sumptuous ball from Captain Campbell Thomson cut through the defence putting Jack one on one with the keeper where he coolly slotted home to make it 2-0. Jack then turned provider with a fantastic cross from the right side, which Dom Clark calmly controlled in traffic and placed it in the bottom right hand corner for 3-0 before half-time. The second half was a quieter affair with the first half score having the BBs a touch complacent. Although a few half chances came the Stallions way, strong composed performances from fill-in sweeper Ben Mackay and James Smith meant that Ryan Feyter spent the game without having to field a shot on target. Continued silky midfield play from Ahmad Dadabhai and Lewis Dunster as well as some tidy link-up play with Ash Burton meant that the pressure stayed on the Stallions leading to Dom finding the goal for his brace. Holding strong to the end left the BBs with a well deserved three points, clean sheet, and some cold beers in the clubhouse. Special shoutout to Kev for jumping in and refereeing and to our opposition who played the game in a great spirit throughout – The Hunter Coach’s View – “I couldn’t make the first game. We won 4-0, probably because I couldn’t make the first game”

WESTERLIES

WESTERLIES 3 : 0 Northern Rovers After a disappointing 2020 season, a bright sunny day greeted us on Saturday at Te Atatu Pennisula Park for the opening day of the season. After at least three pitch changes, we were set to do battle with a familiar foe in Glenfield, no sorry Northern Rovers, with their new stylish name the Sultans of Schwing, a classic for all you oldies out there that love a bit of Dire Straits in your tape decks. The number 4 was in great condition and the boys were raring to go. As is customary these days, the Westerlies have a moment around the centre circle to support Men’s health and say it is ok to be vulnerable. This week in the absence of Niuean’s favourite son Tony, it was left to Whitey to step up. In full Te Reo Maori, Whitey, to his credit, gave it everything he had, I for one was very impressed and it set the game up nicely. Well done mate. The game started very evenly, the games in the past have been tight affairs, with defences on top. Te Atatu knocked the ball about nicely, creating a few chances, the opposition happy to play direct. Now football is a simple game at times and we have all been caught out by the long ball over the top, and that is what broke the deadlock here, Welsh Pete, was very tired, couldn’t run down the wing, so played a defence splitting pass to Sammy, who ran on to it and with the goalkeeper still moving towards him cleverly slotted it home. 1-0 up, and that is how it stayed until half time. The second half started in the same vein, lots of defending by the opposition and pushing from Tat. In a tiring half, Te Atatu seized the initiative and subsequently doubled their lead, a good ball from Matt sent Sammy through, and again before the goalkeeper had time to get set, Sammy slotted home his second of the game with the outside of his left foot. The next goal was now very important in the game and lack of preseason games were starting to tell as Te Atatu sat back on their lead, inviting pressure through a series of corners. This didn’t last long however, and after good work down the left, Kev weighted a perfect ball into the box for the relentless Sammy to run onto, finishing again with aplomb. A hat-trick, a superstar performance, with a proud mum and dad watching on. Full time 3-0. Good to welcome new guys to the club Matt, Amir, Phil, Ollie and Mike making their full debuts for the club, all played there part and contributed to the bar takings, completing the customary Double Brown shotgun with contrasting levels of success. Don’t worry the guys that gapped it, you will get you see you day in court. Player of the day was an interesting one, Whitey I thought had a blinder before the game and during it, looking after a tricky opponent very well. However, Sammy scored a sublime hat-trick, with three great finishes, he was always a threat with his pace and movement, too much for the opposition. Well done Sammy. Special thanks to Eddie Trubshoe for playing in goal for us, even though he was technically sitting on the bench for the first team. One blinding save at 0-0, could have made all the difference in the end, a great clubman/legend of the game and very much welcome to join up with us anytime you feel like it. Also big thanks to Chris Trehy for refereeing first half, was a good game for you to ref, much appreciated. Next week we are away in Devonport to take on North Shore United, hoping to build on a good and enjoyable performance. Great to be back playing again with the boys. A wise man once said to me, is footie good for your health? Shit yeah!!!

KOWBOYS

KOWBOYS 3 : Greenhithe Rebels Following Cowboy's promotion last season to Division 4, this game was played at Wainomi Park 3. Te Atatu played a 4:4:2 formation with wing backs and Greenhythe adopted a 4:4:3 formation. This game was a well contested game with Te Atatu controlling large parts of the game particularly in midfield but Greenhythe were dangerous by quick counter attack. The first half Greenhythe played with the wind and the Greenhythe goalkeeper had a long kick and created two assists for the Greenhythe strikers with both opportunities missed. Greenhythe took the lead after 6 minutes with the ball lost in midfield and a quick counter attack from the right with a fine cross to the striker on back post 1-0 to Greenhythe. After 14 minutes, an excellent run and cross by Steve McAlister nearly produced a sensational goal with Phil McEwen nearly converting with a flying header. Te Atatu applied pressure with 5 or 6 opportunities to score in the first half but not converted. A great shot by Paul Tyler hit the bar at 18 mins with a long shot from the edge of the box. Score at halftime was 1-0 to Greenhythe. Te Atatu dominated the second half with our midfield being in total control. An excellent game from Mel Morrison who was brilliant in Midfield with support from Steve McAlister on the right wing. Te Atatu applied pressure and equalised with a goal from Gavin Kaye after 56 minutes. Gavin added the brace after an excellent run through on goal and a fine finish after 69 mins. This was a controversial goal as it was flagged offside. Bob the ref was well placed and overruled linesman 2-1 to Te Atatu. After 75 mins a fine shot from Gavin Gavin nearly completed the hat trick but the shot hit the bar. Not to be denied, Gavin completed the hat trick after 85 mins with a fine individual run through the defense and scored in the corner for 3-1. This was a well deserved win by the Te Atatu Cowboys. Player of the day was Gavin Kaye. .

MR ILLINGSWORTH

CLUB SPONSOR The first general store to be established in Te Atatu was owned by a Mr Illingsworth. Back in the day, a general store wasn’t just a place to get supplies, it served as a meeting place for the locals. By the 1930’s the peninsula community grew to 50 houses, along with a hall, a school and a church. Mr Illingsworth added post office facilities and a petrol pump to the store and it remained at the heart of community life. Just like Mr Illingsworth, we are all about community. So come in, grab a beer or a bite and enjoy your local restaurant & bar.
