MEN'S RESERVES

TE ATATU 2 : 5 WEST AUCKLAND The Ressie boys headed down great north road to take on a physical West Auckland side who were propped up in the table. The young boys in the team spent the week training with the first team which is a good indication of where we want to go with the youth at the club and that was echoed with 6 players starting under the age of 21. The game started with an even flow, both teams just getting a feel for each other. After even possession for the first part of the half, west Auckland took the

lead with a counter that caught the Te Atatu back line on the back foot. A good ball in and a good volleyed finish. Within two minutes Tat had equalised after a good clearance into Ben Meyer who ran at the defence and a deflected cross fell into the path of Adam Cleverly who tucked it away for his first goal of the season. 1-1. It turned into a scrappy game with both teams skipping out the midfield only looking for long balls over the defence which was unforgiving on a small pitch. Not long after WA doubled their lead with some bad ball watching from our boys. 2-1. With the boys being on the back foot for the next 10 minutes, Pete made a double change with Joe coming back into the team and Bryn who’s been away overseas for a while. It didn’t take Bryn long before making an impact, scoring with his first touch of the ball, with a nicely placed strike. 2-2 but it didn’t last long with WA scoring two minutes later after a lapse in concentration from our defence. Story of our day it seems. 3-2 half time, the second half was tightly contested with both teams going close, none closer then Campbell who missed a chance to make it 3-3 after some good work from Bryn who unselfishly squared it. The game was stretched as the ressie boys tried to find an equaliser but with a couple minutes to go, against the run of play WA made it 4 and put the game to bed. And Connor put a screamer of a header into his own net to make it 5 on the stroke of full time. The boys played well but lacked some concentration at vital moments. Big shout out again to the young players for stepping up to the challenge and playing some good footy. Player of the day went to Bryn who worked tirelessly and was rewarded with a goal

WOMENS'S FIRSTS

TE ATATU 3 : 1 BEACHLANDS MARAETAI Off the back of 3 points the week before but plenty to work on the ladies were hoping to put out a stronger performance for their first home game of the season. A much stronger start that the previous week the ladies got to work. Absorbing early pressure from quick counter attacks from Beachlands, the ladies settled into their game and started to control possession.

Dana Humby set things in motion off with a cracking volley into the top corner. Wyllowe Poata knocked one in off a corner to get her name on the scorecard. Beachland's brought it back to 2:1 on the stroke of half time courtesy of a penalty. It was all on for the second half.

Defense was the key to the second half as the Emma Pickles led backline kept control and saw off a number of counter attacked. Ang Byrne soon made it three and the ladies knuckled down to see out what was a gritty and well-contested game. Credit to Beachland's who pushed Te Atatu to the final whistle. PoD to Vicky Butterworth (Butts) for another fantastic display in goal.

WOMENS'S DIV 3

TE ATATU 1 : 3 TAKAPUNA The div 3 woman’s team took on Takapuna on Sunday which ended in a 3-1 loss. The score line didn’t portray the game itself as both teams had a few chances early on. Takapuna had a very young team that did utilise their speed on counter attacks.

The ladies had a couple key players missing on the weekend and a very defensive bench which did mean players did end up playing all over the place to fill in and being that we did end up picking up a few injuries to key players as well. Thank you to Telana for going back in goal once again and taking one for the team. The ladies gave it their all and came off second best unfortunately so now onto the next league game.

MUDRATS

MUDRATS 2 : 6 ALBANY I do not claim to be a knowledgeable footballer. However, I endeavour to convey the happenings of the 8th day of May 2021 in expert and explicit detail. At approximately 1.45pm, The Mudrats were scheduled to kick off against Albany at Albany. The overclouded skies and light rain meant the delicate, pasty skin of our beloved ginger property manager was safe from harsh UV rays. During the warm-up, the 11 squad members who showed up on time were pleased to see Ivan Petkovski finally arrive (possibly after a busy day of running the Macedonian Mafia). As Ivan enthusiastically jogged over, the team realised this meant we had one sub. The significance of this could not be overstated as the two ringers (Matt Wedgewood and Tauseef Choudhury) were drastically out of shape. The last time these two had touched a ball, not in their own scrotum, was well over a year ago. Furthermore, the youngling Jay failed to appear. However, our optimistic leaders Adam Bradley and Jacob Weaver, were confident in our team's strength. The field was set in the ancient yet tasteful 4-4-2 formation. I do not understand formations in football, but I've been told this is essential information. Early in the match, our confident leaders' hubris was punished, with Albany taking the lead. (1-0). The next goal was a sneakily taken freekick. The fragrant man swine of an Albany left-winger slipped a cheeky shot into the bottom corner after a dodgy call by the referee (2-0). The Mudrats came back with a strong rebuttal with either Kirk, Adam or Tim (can't remember who exactly) slapping a fine shot, nearly tearing the net from the woodwork. Wim Duncker, the Goalkeeper, made a notable save bravely diving at the striker's feet. The gutsy goalie's tricep swelled up to be as thick as his thigh. The first half finished with Albany in the lead 3-1 ( or 2-1, but who knows/cares). The second half started poorly with our ruggedly handsome right back being overloaded at the back post. This resulted in yet another goal for Albany. Shortly after that, the Albany right winger scored a complete fluke, finally finding the net after denting nearly every car in the car park from previous attempts (5-1). To the great relief of the defenders, Adam Bradley and Timothy Ysbrand Meyer had either fallen back into holding mid or were now too tired to get forward. The quality touch and experience of these juggernauts of the Mudrats strengthened up the backline. In the closing 10 mins of the game, the centre backs Adam Pearse and Jacob Weaver swapped with Shivneel Singh and Ysbrand Meyer. The new midfielders presence was instantly felt as Albany were now on the back foot for the first time in the game. This led to a classic Kirk Chapman goal from build-up play by Adam Pearse and Jacob Weaver. The after match performance overshadowed the main event. 3 quarts for $22 NZD was an opportunity the gollumpus of a target man Kirk Chapman was not going to miss. Adam Bradley and Wim Duncker smashed crate bottles of Waikato Draught like champs. Kirk and Hohepa enjoyed Lion Red. Adam Pearse (man of the match) nestled a well earned Speights with his new mates. The trendy Jacob Weaver enjoyed a Panhead craft ale followed by Tuatara ale as the overpriced softball club lacked Pals. Adam Pearse's stellar performance on the field was well matched by his intellectual, political analysis of Labour's current policy. The team were enthralled by his dapper discourse on the public sector pay freezes. Overall, it was a game of two halves. Someone lost, someone won, but the overall winner was heartwarming camaraderie and friendship.

WILD STALLIONS

STALLIONS 1 : 2 BIRKENHEAD The Stallions went up against Birkenhead this weekend and felt confident that we would have a better display than last week's 4-0 loss. A gritty training session on Wednesday set the mood for Saturday morning with a near full squad ready to go to war. We started the game brightly, dominating the opening 20 minutes and being rewarded with a goal after Jadin calmly beat the Birko right back and placed his shot firmly passed their keeper to put us 1-0 up. The game started to ebb and flow but we stayed resolute at the back and continued to carve out chances. We went into the break 1-0 up and perhaps feeling a little unlucky to not be ahead by more. Birko came back at us in the 2nd half and despite Chris making a few good stops, they equalized and went on to score a second late in the half to take away all 3 points in a 2-1 victory over the Stallions. Somewhat dumbfounded about just how we managed to lose a game we played so well in, many lion reds were consumed, and we all enjoyed watching the O35s Kowboys absolutely wallop their opposition on field 1 after us. Our man of the match for Saturday was Logan after he put in a solid 90 min performance at CB. We travel away to Warkworth this weekend in what is set to be a very difficult game for the Stallions.

BIRTHDAY BOYS

BIRTHDAY BOYS 2 : 2 WARKWORTH Coming off a big opening day win, spirits were high in the Birthday Boys squad as they took on a Warkworth team coming off a loss. It was quick to see that the boys from Warkworth were determined to make their long travel time wark-worthwhile as they started the game the better of the two sides. As they often do, the BBs grew into the game and began to create a few chances of their own as the sides matched up very evenly. It was Warkworth who struck first as a high foot in the box from James Smith was called a penalty by a heartbroken Mark McKeown, which was calmly put away. With heads dropping, the BBs needed a boost and cometh the hour, cometh the Captain. Just before half-time some lovely link-up play and a self-described ‘perfectly weighted ball’ from Ash Burton, Captain Campbell Thomson unleashed an absolute rocket from at least 20 metres out that thundered into the roof of the net – sure to be a goal of the season contender. With the scores level at half-time, the BBs were feeling rejuvenated until James was unluckily adjudged to have brought down a Warkworth player in the box for a second penalty. Again, calmly put away and Warkworth were up 2-1. Chances continued to come for the BBs with backline boys Krishna Gupta almost heading in a Jack Alexander laser corner and Ben Mackay being so gobsmacked by an open goal that he put it wide. The continued pressure paid off for the BBs with 10 minutes to go. A well-placed Ahmad Dadabhai free kick was unable to be held by the Warkworth keeper and poacher Ash Burton pounced to make the scores level with a well-deserved goal. The final 10 minutes had the BBs pushing for victory, but in the end the points were shared in a hard fought, but very even, entertaining contest. – The Hunter Coach’s View – “We came up today against a team who play a similar style of football to us. We could have walked away with the 3 points if it wasn’t for the hopeless performance of the first half referee. Plot twist – it was me.”

WESTERLIES

OVER 35s

2021 | ISSUE 02

WESTERLIES 5 : 1 NORTH SHORE UNITED After a solid win and performance in Round One, the Westerlies embarked on our first away trip of the season, over the shore to take on North Shore Hobbs. On a grey, windy afternoon, we battled through the Lake Road car park with confidence high. We welcomed back Aalbers, Tony and Carey to the squad, to add strength, wisdom and aggression to the team. The game started at a good pace, with the boys knocking the ball around nicely and North Shore doing a lot of chasing and defending. Their resistance didn’t last long and the opening goal was well deserved if not a tad lucky. A ‘driven’ free-kick from the right was spectacularly headed into the bottom corner by an unfortunate North Shore defender, one would say a very nice finish. At this point, the Westerlies went for the kill, an impressive move down the right with Welsh Pete cutting inside onto his left and curling a sublime shot into the far, top corner of the goal, now there was a bit of debate about whether it was a cross or a shot, either way, it was 2-0 and our tails were well and truly up. A third followed quickly after, a good through ball, was controlled by the ‘sprinting’ Chris Aalbers, who chopped inside to beat the despairing tackle of the defender, the defender whilst sliding clearly handled the ball, some would say basketball dribbled it, a big cry went up for the clear penalty, but Chris didn’t stop playing, calmly tucking the ball under the keeper, settling all arguments. Half time 3-0. Could have been 5 or 6 with a disallowed goal and a glaring open goal miss. Team talk was easy at half time, with the boys happy to listen the Whitey carry on about positive wellbeing topics close to his heart. The second half started in the same vain with the Westerlies pushing forward. It became obvious from the offset that the opposition where trying to protect their goal, sitting very deep, with numbers behind the ball. The fourth goal duly arrived, this time from the penalty spot, a good through ball, Kev sprinted on to the ball, defender cleans out his legs, no VAR need for this decision, a stonewall penalty. Kev picked himself up, ready to collect the ball, open his account for season. However, unknown to him, the ball was already on the spot, penalty taker ready to convert. Whitey, AKA the penalty sniper, lined up the kick, head down, foot through the back of the ball, sent the keeper the wrong way to lay to rest this penalty demons of 2019. Then we fell asleep for a while and North Shore, had one of their only ventures up field. Some average defending and a tackle in the area, penalty to North Shore. Lots of debate surrounding the decision, using a football clique, ‘I have seen them given’. Player steps up, finds the top corner, good penalty, consecutive clean sheets gone. 4-1. The game then reset back to a familiar pattern and all talk of a surprising comeback was extinguished with a classy 5th goal, a good turn and excellently weighted through ball from Aalbers, Sammy sprinting on the ball, one on one, clinically finishing low into the corner. A good performance by all, some great football played, 5-1 full time. Player of the day this week, again was a hard decision, given the result and that everybody played well and contributed to a very strong performance. Chris Aalbers showed a great touch and was strong on the ball linking play up exceptionally, a goal and an excellent assist in his first game of the season, another solid game from Whitey at right-back, however I am not too sure the opposition had a left winger. The best player on the field, I thought, was Welsh Pete, a constant threat down the right wing, beating his man and proving quality crosses, scored a great goal, North Shore had three guys on him for most of the second half, still couldn’t get him! Special thanks again to Chris Trehy was refereeing second half, not an easy job, but a job done with great integrity and fairness. Would also like to take the opportunity to say all the best to Sammy with his medical procedure this week, his energy and quality will be a big loss for the next six weeks and we look forward to seeing him back scoring goals soon, I hear we have a secret weapon to replace him this week, now he is done driving racing cars. This week back to fortress Te Atatu, for a game on the number one, a field we are always happy to play on, against Birkenhead, who were a league above last season and will pose a decent test of where we are at as a team. Onwards and upwards. Looking forward to the clubs fresh delivery of Double Browns this week, bring you’re ‘A’ game newbies. A wise man once said winning football games is easy, winning lots of football games consecutively is the true challenge

This was a master class by a rampant Te Atatu team in devastating form. The partnership between Gavin and Abs was excellent up front with a quick pacey attack on a wide field that overwhelmed the Hibiscus defence. Two quick goals in the first five minutes from Abs set the tone of the game. Second goal was set up by Gavin with a fine run on goal and chip pass to Abs for an easy tap in. Goals from Gavin and Abs extended lead to 4-0 after 27 minutes. Hibiscus keeper sustained a hamstring injury and had to be replaced. A fine shot from Steve McAlister from the edge of the box extended the lead to 5-0 after 30 minutes. From a set play, Hibiscus managed to get on to the score card with a strong header from the centre back 5-1. Paul increased lead to 6-1 to half time. Second half did not get any better for Hibiscus with a blistering shot from Steve McAlister in the top corner after 52 minutes and Abs scoring with a excellent run through on goal 8-1 after 55 minutes. Further goals from Paul and a fabulous individual goal from Luke to 10-1. Hibiscus managed a quick reply after 67 minutes with a run through on goal following a defensive error 10-2. Te Atatu finished the game strongly with Paul completing a glorious hat-trick after 72 minutes with a fine run on goal and chip over the advancing goalkeeper 11-2. Ash scored with a rasping shot at the edge of the box with a deflection past the keeper after 80 minutes 12-2. Gavin completed the hat-trick with goals at 82 and 85 minutes with the final score 14-2. Player of the day was Paul Tyler with a fabulous hat-trick. With two wins from two games, the Kowboys go to top of the table.
