The Good Things in Life Starting from this issue, I’ll be highlighting and talking about the good things I see in life for each issue. People There are so many great things in life but I suppose we should start off with the people who come into our lives. We like, love, dislike, hate, or are neutral with. Some are acquaintances and strangers, others, close friends, and there are also some we do not want to lose for life (whether they’re your family or your S.O******What is “So”?.). In life, we meet so many great people who help us grow or aid us. However, there are also toxic people who may want to see your downfall. Those are the ones we should stay away from, but I feel like we should also be grateful since they let us see the awesome people in our lives and who are actually genuine to us. From personal experience, most people I’ve met are really good people who are so diverse. They make up who I am today and I’m really grateful to those who crossed paths with me.

New Albums MAX G.11

Ariana Grande — thank u, next Release Date: N/A Arguably one of the biggest pop acts right now, Ariana Grande rose to fame back in 2013 with her hit single ‘The Way’ with the late Mac Miller, and she has continued riding the train of success to prosperity through recent years. In 2018, Grande released her fourth studio album, ‘Sweetener,’ in response to the Manchester bombing attack, which she would answer with love and positivity. The pop starlet dropped the lead single of the same name — without a warning, might I add, to the public, which garnered positive reviews to what became a viral phenomenon on social media. Thank you, next.

Meghan Trainor — Treat Myself Release Date: February 1, 2019 Talking about pop acts, some people might remember Meghan Trainor dating all the way back to her 2014 hit, when she traded in songwriting for her major hit that goes something among the lines of: ‘because you know I’m all about that bass, bout that bass.’ Ever since then, Trainor has been releasing pop gems left and right, with influences from doo-wop, R&B, and dance, to create the pop heroine that she is. ‘Treat Myself’ will be her third studio album, following up her second studio album in 2016, ‘Thank You.’ Has it already been that long?

05 | THE HOWL | January 2019 | Mid-Month Edition

The 1975 — Notes on a Conditional Form Release Date: N/A There isn’t much attraction to bands lately — most of the attention goes to solo acts, but bands also deserve attention. Meet the British boy-band The 1975, which is a band described as a pop rock band and is also an indie band, who has released numerous songs and albums challenging several genres. Notes on a Conditional Form is actually a double joint album project, which serves as the second part to the first album they released this era, titled ‘Music For Cars.’ This will be their next release.

Avril Lavigne — Head Above Water Release Date: February 9, 2019 Maybe the punk rock star isn’t very well known among us younger people; however, people might remember her for her classic songs such as ‘Girlfriend’ and ‘Complicated’. While her self-titled album was released back in 2013, Lavigne was soon infected with Lyme disease in 2014, which is a life-threatening disease that hindered her from performing. She had stated in an interview that she had ‘accepted death’ because of the disease. Thankfully, she managed to overcome the trauma the sickness put on her and channel that energy into writing. The lead single ‘Head Above Water’ is her talking about being strong and fighting for her life.

Myer-Briggs Indicator Test Helpful or Harmful? KRIS G. 10

You have probably gone online and typed “personality tests” or “online personality quiz” and such. And for those, such as me, who like to go around taking these quizzes in their spare time, we eventually end up taking the Myer Briggs test in one form or another. Often, these tests seem like they’re psychics who are able to probe our minds from another side of the world. But is it actually true, or are these tests using our minds against us?

What is the Myer Briggs Test The Myer Briggs test is a test (obviously) which provides a bunch of questions for us to answer a ranging from “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree”. After answering, the results will be judged using 4 scales, each with 2 opposing traits, and you will be placed along each one. 1. Introverted vs Extroverted
People often equate introverts as shy and extroverts as outgoing, however, this is untrue. Being extroverted just means that you feel energized after talking to people, while the opposite is true for introverts. 2. Intuitive vs Observant
Observant people are those who are grounded to reality, while intuitive ones like to think about abstract ideas and the “what might’ve been’s”. 3. Thinking vs Feeling
Thinking people value logic over emotions, the opposite is true for feeling people. 4. Judging vs Perceiving
To be a judger is to be highly organized, whereas perceivers are quite spontaneous.

07 | THE HOWL | January 2019 | Mid-Month Edition

Pros When we see how prevalent the test is, it must mean that it has a lot of pros. Or at the very least, one major pro that is enough to attract the attention of many. A major attraction is that it manages to sum you up into 4 values based on 4 spectrums, which provides an easy answer to the question of “Who am I and what’s my purpose?” Educators sometimes use the test to guide students on a path which would suit them most. Employers also utilize this test, as they believe that the test will help determine who will be the best worker and who will improve most. However, we should not forget about the fun aspect of the test too. The test allows us to explore our conscious and unconscious selves without being too boring or complex—just a simple and intuitive “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree” answer bar.

Cons Although many praises have been given to the test by many professionals, that does not mean it doesn’t raise eyebrows. While many view the test as a result of great scientific minds and discipline, it should be noted that its origin story could not be any further from the truth. It began with a psychologist, Carl Jung, who developed the idea of 8 personality traits based on his friends and not group studies, then the idea was adopted by a pair of mystery novel authors to the current Myer-Briggs Indicator Test with 16 personality traits. Thus, using tests from people with little scientific knowledge and discipline to define others can end disastrously. Another reason why the tests can be misleading is the same reason why the results resonate with us: the creators often put in vague descriptions which, ironically, makes it so that participants would be able to fit right into its description.

Conclusion The Myer-Briggs test is not something one should take seriously and professionally, but that does not mean that it can’t be helpful. These tests may not be able to dig deep into a person’s mind, but it can be very useful for selfreflection, as participants can come back at a later date to compare their later results with their initial results. All in all, these tests are quite intriguing and fun, but just be beware that they are not a magical test that knows you inside and out.

Guildmates Doing What They Are Best At JUSTIN G.11

Chapter 3: Same, But Different As it turns out, joining a hunting party was much more complicated than what Alanza had initially thought... Upon hearing that man’s request (who calls himself Gerald), they were led behind the busy counter and into an isolated room quite deep within the compound. The guard who escorted them told Alanza this was a private negotiation room where mid- to high-ranking adventurers came to settle any disputes. But with all the fancy sound-dampening cushions installed, this room looked more like an interrogation cell than a “peaceful resolution.” What worried Alanza the most was if she got stuck in this room she would have to choose between paying a huge fine for saving herself, or starving to death while waiting for help. With both negotiators present, one of the receptionists, who Alanza could recognize, was probably high-ranking, thanks to his bright red and slightly fancier uniform, instead of a normal blue one like others at the front desk. He gave them the run-down explanation of the party’s formation: each member was responsible for the outcome of a given task, distribution of reward was done by the leader, and lastly, betrayal is to be faced with capital punishment. And with multiple pledges signed, Alanza became a part of Gerald’s Eastwood Hunting Party. “By the way, your party name sucks,” Alanza mentioned as they exited the guild hall. “Give me a break. I’ve already heard enough of it from my party. I’d be grateful if you didn’t jump on the bandwagon with them.” Gerald said he and his party were going to meet up at a tavern they’d chosen earlier, once he secures a suitable quest. “So they just go with any quest you accept without complaints?”

10 | THE HOWL | January 2019 | Mid-Month Edition

“Of course not. As a captain, I need to acknowledge my teammates’ capabilities, or else we would’ve been eaten by scorpions or something a long time ago.” As Gerald led them further down the alley, the sense of dread Alanza felt kept worsening as if there was an impending danger lurking just ahead. “Yup, this is the place.” “So this is the place huh? Let’s se-, ...####.” Alanza sighed and covered her face, shaking her head in disgust and disbelief. “What’s wrong?” Gerald asks. “Nothing, just some unpleasant thoughts,” she lied, and followed him through the door, into Gregory’s Tavern. “Well, well, well. Look who’s back with a new partner,” Greg called out behind the bar. His lips twisted into a pitiful attempt of a poker face while his mind was probably going haywire from all the insults he could think of. “I know that Reynard asked you to survive on your own, but don’t take his word to the extreme.” “Yeah! How could you just ditch us for a girl the second we split up.” Occupying one of the tables was a fully armed guy who seemed to be Gerald’s acquaintance, who joined in with Greg as he waved at them. “Why you-“ Alanza stomped towards the two with her sword ready, but Gerald tapped her on the shoulder as he took the front charge. “Give her a break. I just recruited her into the party and I won’t waste any more time finding another person if she decides to quit,” said Gerald, who seemed to shake it off easily. Seeing him acting casual, Alanza had no choice but to let go of the blade and follow along. The pub was quite deserted, despite the amount of people who came here for drinks regularly. Maybe this place was only popular during the evening for those who wanted to relieve their stress with alcohol instead of facing the awaiting wrath back home.

11 | THE HOWL | January 2019 | Mid-Month Edition

While Greg was occupied with Gerald, Alanza got to meet her new teammates. Judging from their equipment and accessories, this party consisted of three males and two females, including herself. With one caster, a ranger, and three front-liners, this was the typical band for low to mid-level quest parties. The guy who was fully armed waved at her and slapped himself onto one of the empty seats, as if he were inviting her to take a seat—which she did. “Lance.” “Huh?” “That’s my name. What’s yours?” Lance asked, with his hand reached out for a shake. “Alanza,” she replied, shaking his hand, “I’ll be in your care, for now.” “Our pleasure.” “Count me out,” said the caster, pushing her mug away as she got up and headed towards the door. “Hey, wait! I know you’re upset, but-” “I need some fresh air.” She cut Lance off coldly, and left without saying another word. Judging from the sulking faces her teammates were displaying, something must’ve happened before she joined this team. “I’m sorry. She’s still upset about what happened on our last quest. Please forgive her rudeness,” Lance apologised. “It’s fine. Tell me more about it.” Lance said the team was on a mission to clear out a monster-infested mine in an outskirt village just south of the city, but they were ambushed by a gang of bandits before they could complete the quest. Unable to fight a two-sided battle, retreat was the only logical option. But one of their members was hit by a poisonous arrow during their narrow escape. With no antidotes on hand, they had no choice but to amputate her leg to prevent the poison from spreading.

12 | THE HOWL | January 2019 | Mid-Month Edition

After recovering, she requested a proper resignation due to her condition. The others couldn’t do anything else but to grant her wish. It was already hard enough to lose a good comrade, but that caster, Milline, couldn’t stop blaming herself for it. “She must’ve mistaken us for trying to replace her friend. That’s why she’s acting out like this.” Lance sighed. Even Jack, the ranger who was stuffing his face earlier, stopped midway through his food and sighed. At least swallow your food first before sighing, you swine. “Well, I can’t say I can fully understand how she feels now, but she’s not the only one,” Alanza concluded. Her answer seemed to have caught them off guard. “I do apologise if I have nothing nice to say, but she’ll have to get over it herself.” “If you’re done eating, go get everything you need. Gerald will explain everything once we’re on our way.” “But, shouldn’t we wait for Milline?” both of them ask simultaneously. “Don’t worry, I have a feeling she’ll be back.”

“So the quest was a bit different than before; a gang of bandits had been terrorising the villages south of the city. Our objective was to neutralise the bandits and bring them to justice. Killing will be the last resort if live capture is impossible,” Gerald informed the party, as the scroll consisting of the quest's information passed around. The gang consisted of around a dozen men. Each was armed with swords or daggers that were in poor condition, and some had worn-down leather armor on them. The village that sent this request said 5 men, 3 women, and 5 children were killed in the last raid, with one child abducted as a hostage. They must’ve coped with the fact that those bandits might have already killed the abductee. Instead of writing it as a part of the quest goal it was left out.

13 | THE HOWL | January 2019 | Mid-Month Edition

Everyone seemed to be on edge since they left the city. They must’ve only completed monster subjugation in the past, so it was no surprise that they were at a loss when it came to live capture. Everyone, except Milline. Alanza wasn’t able to talk to her since they first met, but she could already tell Milline was bad news. When Gerald told her about the quest, she immediately jumped in without asking for any other details...too optimistic for someone who threw a tantrum earlier. “Don’t worry, Lilith. I’ll make all of them pay.” Milline whispered to herself, just loud enough for Alanza to catch it. Ah, revenge, of course. “We’re here,” Gerald announced as the cart came to a fast halt right at the outskirts of the village’s forest. The sun is already setting behind them by the time they got there. The trail those thieves left behind continued deep into the woods and they had no choice but to continue on foot. It was a nice change of pace, considering the fact that the uneven road and long ride had stiffened her joints. A little warm up would be good before confronting the enemies without having any drawbacks. With Jack taking the lead, he led the team deeper into the forest, tracking the bandits’ path with the footprints beneath countless layers of vegetation, and disarming traps laid hidden in their path. With all the dead leaves lying on the ground, short routes have to be avoided to not alarm the bandits of their position. After many twists and turns while trekking at the slowest pace possible, the group eventually found the location of the hideout. “This is going to be challenging,” Gerald said, making a crude drawing of the camp with his finger. “Milline’s fire magic won’t be good with the surrounding trees. A sneak attack would be impossible without proper cover.” “What about direct assault?” Alanza chimed in, jumping off the tree branch he was sitting on, landing right on top of Gerald’s crude drawing. “Milline can initiate with her magic, Jack supports us from the treetop, and the rest of us just charge in.”

14 | THE HOWL | January 2019 | Mid-Month Edition

“I like that plan,” Lance agreed, coughing the sand out from the gaps of his helmet. “I’m fine with that.” Jack also agreed. “Milline?” “Sure,” she replied. “Then what are we waiting for?” Gerald asked, pointing his sword at the camp. “Everyone, move out!” Within a few minutes, hails of fireballs came crashing upon the bewildered thieves like a sudden monsoon, sending them scrambling like bees out of a burning nest while igniting the tents. With the criminals scattered in chaos, the frontline followed up with a charge into the fray, their weapons drawn as they were about to strike down their foes. “Remember! Don’t kill anyone!” Gerald shouted out as he swiped one of them off the ground with his spear, and slammed the butt down against the bandit’s throat. “Crap, I think I killed one on the first swing!” Alanza shouted back in reply, smacking another bandit in the face with her sheath, kicking the other one right into the fiery tent. “Hey Jack! One at 11 o’clock!” “On it!” Drawing an arrow, he shot the escapee in the leg, then moved on to the next. With an overwhelming force raining upon them, the disorganized bandits tried to fight back against the attackers, only to be struck down one after another. Having no other choice but to surrender, the remainders dropped to their knees and begged for mercy. “Hey Lance, go take care of the-” “Move!” Milline commanded, pushing Gerald aside as she stomped toward the kneeling remainders. She scanned through the group, stopped at an old-looking man, and dragged him out onto the open. The old man made no attempt to resist. Using her staff, she struck the man’s ankle, causing him to kneel down in pain. 15 | THE HOWL | January 2019 | Mid-Month Edition

“There’s more where that came from!” Milline jeered at the kneeling man. Her eyes became sinister as her mouth twisted into a blood-curdling grin. Even her teammates were disturbed by the sudden change in her personality. “W-w-what did I ever do to you!?” The old man cried out. “Don’t you remember?” Milline snapped, landing another blow across his face. “If it wasn’t for YOU Lilith would still be here with us!” She smashed her staff against the man’s body over and over again with hate-filled rage. He could do nothing but curl up in a fetal position while covering his head against the never-ending blows. Her teammates watched as she unleashed her fury upon the defenseless man, yet they couldn’t do anything to stop her. “At least that’s what they believe,” Alanza thought to herself. They could’ve stepped in and pulled her away, or at least tried to calm her down, but they refused to do anything. Maybe deep down, they thought her action was justified, and chose to turn a blind eye to it, as long as the man didn’t die in the process. Finally, Milline’s staff snapped in half, leaving the man lying on the ground bloody and bruised. “I’m not done with you yet!” she bellowed, tossing away her broken staff and grabbing the man by his head. Her palm started to glow, and the man cried out in agony as her scorching fingers dug into his face. “That’s enough Milline! Let go of him!” Gerald shouted out, but his voice was drowned out by the bloody cries of the man. And to her teammate’s horror, the man’s head burst into flames with bits of still-burning flesh splattered everywhere. The flames, instead of dimming out, turned on their master and began consumed Milline’s arm. She cried out in pain as the blaze slowly climbed its way upward. Drawing her sword, Alanza steps forward, and cut Milline’s burning arm clean off. The flame immediately diminished before it could hit the ground, and Alanza slammed her hilt against Milline’s forehead, knocking her out.

16 | THE HOWL | January 2019 | Mid-Month Edition

“WHAT THE HELL! HOW CAN YOU JUST DO THAT?!” Lance yelled as he tried to approach her, but was held back by Gerald and Jack. “Not now, we need to clean her wound.” Alanza interrupted, pulling out a bottle of salt water and pouring it on the limbless stump. “The fire couldn’t have been put out by any normal means. It’s better to do this before the fire spread any further.” With the smell of burning flesh still lingering in the air, she continued to apply treatment on the unconcious girl, while the bandits were being rounded up and tied by the others. The rest went by in a flash. Those bandits were sent to the nearest prison, and would face court punishment in the future. The abducted child was found buried near the campsite, his body safely returned to the family. Milline was rushed to the hospital. She wouldn’t die, but her right arm would no longer be in any use. She was lucky that the team still accepted her once she fully recovered, but Alanza believed that she had already completed her job. “Are you sure about this?” Gerald asked. Both he and Alanza were sitting in the empty guild hall. All the adventurers and staff had returned home, but the two remained there, along with some janitors. “Yes, I feel like I’ve taken a spot that belongs to someone else, so my services will no longer be required in your party.” “But you know Lilith can no longer fight anymore, right? She even said so herself.” “That’s where you’re wrong,” Alanza replies, tossing him a piece of folded paper. “There’s a blacksmith who can build artificial limbs, but the price can be a little high, so you should decide with your team as a whole.” “You know… Milline kind of reminds me of who I used to be. We are both willing to sacrifice everything, even our own lives, to go down that path. However, the sole difference between us is that my wish for vengeance will never be fulfilled like hers.” “Take care of her well, “ Alanza said, patting Gerald on the back as she headed for the exit, “Make sure she doesn’t go down the same path I did.”

17 | THE HOWL | January 2019 | Mid-Month Edition

“Alanza.” “Yes?” she asked, right before exiting the guildhall. “...thank you.” “No need to,” she replied, as she opened the door behind her. Leaning against it while she stared up into the night sky. Even though there were few stars to light up the dark curtain, the moon made up to her by illuminating brightly in the sky, parting away her doubt for those guys like how it parted away the clouds of darkness beneath its radiance. “What should I have for tonight’s dinner?”

5 Free Apps for TCIS Students GRACE T. G. 11

1.Desmos (ios/andriod)
Desmos is an excellent app for making graphs. It has a very easy-to-use interface and runs very smoothly. Most of us high-schoolers probably know Desmos from using the website. But guess what? It’s an app as well! The mobile app and the website are practically identical in features. Because of this, it has never been easier to make digital graphs! Furthermore, Desmos lets you play around with functions by making sliders for every unknown variable. I really recommend using this feature for those who struggle to understand how different functions work. Overall, this app is both useful for math wizards and novices.

2. HelloChinese (ios/andriod)
Chinese can be a difficult class for beginners. Because of this, you might need a little extra boost. Introducing HelloChinese, an app that helps you read, speak, and write Chinese from the basics to beyond. While a lot of apps that “teach” Chinese are just a compilation of flashcards, this HelloChinese actually assesses its users to determine what level they are at and what they need to work on. What’s even better is that this app offers both traditional and simplified Chinese. Amazing! So with this little extra help, you’ll be on par with your classmates in no time!

19 | THE HOWL | January 2019 | Mid-Month Edition

3. DocScan (ios)
Ever had to take a picture of a piece of paper or some sort of document, but it looked like unreadable trash? You’re not alone with this issue. Fortunately, DocScan is the solution. DocScan works like a portable little photocopying machine that can automatically align your papers’ edges so that your digital copy is not distorted. The app has three scanning options: photo, black & white, and color. It also boosts the contrast of your documents so that the text is easy to see. Unfortunately, this app is not available in the Google Play store, but do not worry! There are hundreds of other identical apps out there that will make the cut.

4. Quizlet (ios/andriod)
Every student out there has a deep appreciation for Quizlet. I mean, you can use it for anything! English vocab? Quizlet. AP Psychology’s weekly quizzes? Quizlet. Chemistry polyatomic ions? Quizlet. Seriously—what can Quizlet NOT do? It has everything a student could ever want—including, the form of a mobile app. I feel that although a lot of people use Quizlet quite frequently, not many people use the app. What I can say, though, is that the app is much smoother than the mobile site and quicker to access previous flashcards sets. All being said, just download it already!

20 | THE HOWL | January 2019 | Mid-Month Edition

5. PicCollage (ios/andriod)
Picollage is a classic. So much, that I bet you have it sitting in a dusty corner somewhere inside your phone. Because of that, go ahead and open it up! What you’ll find is an app that allows you to arrange text and images on a digital canvas with ease. Ever had to make a poster for any occasion at all, but wanted to do it digitally? Use PicCollage! It has every feature you need to do simple graphic designing (and can give you some quite stunning results). Although I must warn you that the app does paste its watermark onto your saved work. So as long as you’re not bothered by that, this app is amazing!

My name is Justin, and I’m in 11th grade. My current topics will be comic and fiction writing, I’m not Shakespeare or anything, so don’t expect an award winning story from me. I joined the HOWL because I want to try something different and I want to leave some impact on the school before I leave. I like satirical comedies, games, memes, and most notably, I’m a disgusting otaku, but at least I have some decency to begin with. I hope joining the HOWL will improve both my writing and drawing skills.

Tanakrit Changcharoenkij (Kris): Columnist

Hmm… How do I start this? My name is Kris. I am currently a sophomore, and this year I’ll be finally joining HOWL for all the times as it has piqued my interest. Speaking of interests, I like to read mangas, eating, and being lazy in general. As a new member of the HOWL, I’ll be writing about psychology and philosophy since they are the two things interest me, and MYRA APPROVED OF IT so yeh… :D. All in all, this is probably going to be the only time that I write this casually since I’ll be delving into serious matters this year.
