. TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL COLLEGE , Congratulations and Best Wishes To the Class of 2021 Dear Graduates, I am pleased to extend sincere congratulations to each of you, the members of the Tri-County Technical College Class of 2021. You have reached a significant milestone toward achieving your career and personal goals. We celebrate your accomplishments and a job well done. Earning a college degree, diploma or certificate is an outstanding achievement for every student, and, in particular, for those who are the first in their families to graduate from college. Student success is our top priority. This means that, when you succeed, we succeed. We applaud you for the tenacity, hard work and dedication you showed during your time as a student at Tri-County Technical College, especially during the 2020-2021 academic year as you adjusted to an online learning environment as a result of the novel coronavirus. I am certain the education you received at Tri-County will provide the foundation and career preparation you need to succeed in life and work. You are well positioned to meet future challenges and opportunities because of your talents, skills, education and strong work ethic. I want to thank faculty and staff for your efforts to prepare our graduates for the future. Our commitment and passion for teaching, learning and student success are the very heart of what makes Tri-County Technical College the top-rated technical college in South Carolina by nearly every measure—student success, graduation, transfer rates and more. I also would like to offer special thanks to parents, spouses, children and friends for their patience, sacrifices and support of our graduates. You can share in the feeling of pride and excitement in what your graduate has accomplished and the many opportunities that lie ahead. Graduates, you now join the ranks of thousands of Tri-County Technical College alumni who are making a difference in our communities. We encourage you to stay connected to the College in the coming years. Tri-County is your life-long partner, and we stand ready to assist you in meeting your career and personal goals. Sincerely,

. TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL COLLEGE , 2020 Presidential Medallion for Instructional Excellence Laura McClain Medical Assisting Program Director, Health Education Division The medallion is presented each year to the instructor who has contributed the most during the academic year to the profession of teaching, to the development of the College, and to the students. Laura McClain has been working to continuously improve the medical assisting program since she was hired as its program director in 2014. She brings to the classroom and clinical training more than 25 years of experience as a certified medical assistant, along with eight years as an R.N. McClain provides quality instruction, which creates substantive change in learners. For the past three years, students have achieved 100% pass rates on the American Association of Medical Assistants’ Certification Examination. In 2019 the program was granted full, continuing accreditation through fall 2028 by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. She has incorporated service learning activities into the curriculum since joining the College. She believes community service keeps students engaged and provides an opportunity for them to give back to the community. Service learning also gives students an opportunity to observe the reallife barriers or challenges those they are serving are struggling with. McClain serves in leadership roles in her professional organizations and is respected by her peers, in addition to the students and college administration. She serves as education peer group chair for the S.C. Society of Medical Assistants. At TCTC, she has served as South Carolina Technical Education Association (SCTEA) president for the past three years. She is serving as President Elect of the SCTEA board for the 2021-2022. At TCTC she serves on the Service Excellence Team and is its Employee Recognition Champion. McClain is a 1989 alumna and outstanding graduate of Piedmont Technical College’s medical assisting program and in 2006 earned an associate degree in nursing. She is a member of Little River Baptist Church in Honea Path. She and her husband, Bryan, have two adult children and two grandchildren.

. TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL COLLEGE , 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award Major Darrell Hill Criminal Justice, Class of 1998 The Distinguished Alumni Award is given each year and highlights a graduate’s dedication to his/her alma mater. The recipient of this award must have been awarded a degree, diploma or certificate from Tri-County; must have graduated at least one year ago and must have made significant contributions to the College, the Alumni Association or the community. Major Darrell Hill’s work ethic and his character have served him well over the last 32 years in law enforcement. He is among the first members of the command staff to report for work at the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department and usually the last to leave for the day. “My job is extremely rewarding; it always has been,” said Major Hill, who joined the force on July 25, 1988. “I’ve wanted to be a police officer since I was 15 years old. I love helping people.” He was hired at age 21 as a patrolman working rotating shifts and attending classes at Tri-County. He often spent his lunch hour in class. “It was worth it. I knew I needed the degree. My instructors were wonderful. They were former law enforcement officers who gave us valuable insight that only comes from those who have traveled that road.” He says his degree has made him a better officer, and today he applies the skills he learned in every class. “Education opened doors for me. The degree played a major role in my promotions. It takes hard work and dedication but it’s worth it.” Five years after graduation he was promoted to sergeant and then lieutenant and later captain. He moved to special operations when Sheriff Chad McBride was elected. Two years ago he assumed his current position as major of operations. In addition to law enforcement, sports and coaching have always been a passion of his. After graduating from T.L. Hanna High School, he received a partial scholarship from a junior college for cross country track but declined because it didn’t offer a criminal justice major. “I wanted to be a police officer and I chose Tri-County because of its outstanding criminal justice department,” he said. Since the age of 14, the YMCA of Anderson served as a second home for Hill. He credits much of his success to his coach Joe Drennon, chief executive officer of the YMCA of Anderson. “We developed a bond which continues to this day. He taught us to respect people and to surround yourself with people who will make you better. Give more than you take to make society better. When I was promoted to my current position, he was the first person I called.” Today Major Hill pays it forward by serving on the YMCA board and through volunteering his time at the YMCA as a basketball and soccer coach. “It’s very rewarding to have such an impression on these kids. I see myself in them. I know that I am positively influencing hundreds a year through camps and other activities,” he said. He serves on the Meals on Wheels board and is a former Habitat for Humanity board member. He has been a member of the Fraternal Order of Police for more than 20 years.

. TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL COLLEGE , Gonfalons The five academic gonfalons on display represent the College and its four academic divisions. Gonfalons, which are banners hung from crosspieces on poles, have been used since medieval times as symbols of state or office. The red and gold gonfalon with the official College Seal represents the institution as a whole. The gonfalons for the four academic divisions display the division names, the official Seal, and the colors associated with the academic disciplines of the divisions: Arts and Sciences – white, science gold; Business and Public Services – drab, peacock blue; Health Education – sage green, apricot; and Industrial and Engineering Technology – orange, science gold.

Mace The Tri-County Technical College Mace is carried by the president of the Faculty Senate, who leads the academic procession at commencement. Historically, the use of a mace dates back to the Middle Ages and was carried before or placed near a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority. In commencement exercises, the mace specifically indicates the authority of the College President to award degrees. The College Mace is made of pecan and brass and depicts the official College Seal. It was designed and manufactured by students in the Engineering Graphics Technology Department.
