Wow, it has been quite a year in the cattle business, record high calf prices and very good return on spent animals with all signs being positive going forward. There have been so many changes in our 53 years of raising purebred Simmentals and already 30 years into our red Angus program. I am certain that my Dad would be proud to see his grandchildren so actively involved in the program he started when he AI’d the first cows to Simmental in 1970.

Everyone is involved here, Thompson and Anja have been doing night shifts for calving and Leanna processes calves through the barn, tagging and weighing. I am thankful Leanna has taken on most of the catalogue, she knows every cow, is ruthless and is without sentimental attachment to certain cows. She carries on our thoughts that every cow must take a calf to the range, every year, no exceptions, no free passes.

Our cattle have a rigorous tour every summer, they walk a 40-70 mile circuit from the ranch up to 5500 feet elevation and back at the end of October. There are many cows we don’t see for three or four months. Good feet and legs are a must, we believe in walking herd sires, allowing us to assess their ability and performance. We find that many of the highly promoted genetics don’t cut it here and we raise our bulls in the conditions that they are expected to work. We are thankful and very much appreciate all our customers and believe that it is extremely important to stand behind our bulls, if there is a problem we appreciate being the first to know. 83% of our bulls sell to repeat customers.

We are very happy with this year’s group of bulls. This is the strongest group of red Simmentals that we have brought to town, they are solid footed, sound, performance bulls. The black Simmentals showcase everything from our highest gaining power bulls to some front-end heifer bulls. There are more red angus than we have had in the past, very consistent from end to end. All of the bulls are grown on a TMR ration to ensure their longevity and soundness.

As in the past, we will look after delivering bulls to you, either in your yard or at a convenient spot close to you.

This is a stout bull mothered by a sweet Dillenger 116D daughter. 160L is the product of many of our favourite crosses and cow families, the most notable being Reality 6P. Good udders trace as far back as one can remember, and 16 females here carry on 6P’s lineage. 160L’s dam, grand dam and great grand dam are all still here which is a great feat considering our cows must raise a calf and breed back on time, making the range tour every single year – or they don’t get to stay another winter. 160L carries huge muscle and mass, doubled up on cherry red colour. We have retained two of his sisters so far, one being the dam of Lot 29.

There’s a lot to love about the dam of this bull. 168E goes back to our old Church donor cow Twister 63R. She is moderate framed, but big barreled and feminine. Her sister produces well just like her, and her daughters are following suit also. A full sister to Lot 10 is maturing into a slightly larger framed, cherry red version of their mother, 168E. Keep the replacements and you’ll reap the benefits of a stellar cow family. For a younger bull, Lot 10 is coming right along in terms of growth and herd bull character.

They are bull mothers, and their daughters will be too. This blaze faced bull gets his looks from his great grand dam Reality 6P, and there are eleven females in the herd sporting that blaze face – all going back to that cow. The final 77J calf in the offering and one that had a lot of catching up to do as his young dam was milking for two. He gained 5 pounds per day once on feed and it just goes to show how growthy each and every bull in this sire group is. Lot 24 comes from possibly our best uddered cow family on the place. One look at these females and you just know their calves are going to be fat and happy coming in in the fall. We have kept every calf off of 192G so far, and her production record is just beginning.

VET’S MESSAGE

Mitchell Cattle Co. has invested in the health of their herd of cattle for many years through a comprehensive herd health strategy. Currently all breeding females and bulls receive an annual vaccination prior to the breeding season to protect against all the important reproductive viruses and bacteria including IBR, Type I and II BVD and Leptosprirosis. All calves are vaccinated at branding to provide protection against the important viruses and bacteria causing respiratory and clostridial diseases. Currently calves receive a modified live vaccine against IBR, Type I and II BVD, BRSV, and PI3, as well as a modified live bacterin against shipping fever and a killed bacterin against Histophilus somnus, Blackleg and other clostridial diseases. At weaning all bull and heifer calves receive a booster with the same vaccines and bacterins used at branding.

In late fall, all cows, bulls, and weaned calves are treated with a topical endectocide to control internal and external parasites.

All bulls in the sale have passed a thorough breeding soundness exam to evaluate scrotal size and shape, semen motility and morphology, and structural soundness. Through my long-standing veterinary relationship with Mitchell Cattle Co., I also know that you can rest assured that each bull is out of a sound, solid, productive cow. Ian and Anja rigorously select their herd for fertility, sound udders, correct feet and legs, and temperament. These cows go to the mountain with their calf each year and come back in the fall for pregnancy testing. Open and late cows, or cows not meeting Mitchell Cattle Co strict criteria, are culled – no excuses, no exceptions.

This is a moderate and complete herd bull which we purchased for $20,000. I’m sure he hasn’t dropped an ounce of flesh since the day he got here; very impressive considering his depth and thickness. A very complete package that is eye appealing and to no surprise calved extremely well on heifers with EPD’s in the 1st percentile for CE, BW and MCE. Springcreek Simmentals bought a semen package and used him on heifers and mature cows and the resulting progeny are fantastic. His sons in the Pursuit of Perfection 2021 sale brought as much as $20,000, $18,000 and $16,000. Daughters of Eastwood 22E sold for as much as $20,000 and $16,000 in Springcreek’s dispersal. We are calving the fourth set of 22E heifers now. They are all well balanced, moderate young brood cows that are producing very well. Eastwood improves calving ease and maternal traits regardless of what he is bred to.

MAF MR 172J

We acquired the most sought-after Velocity x Mackfrid flush calf on offer in Meadow Acres dispersal and are very happy with the results. 172J displays a ton of power in his first calf crop, and we have a much larger second crop on the ground now that is turning out to be quite exciting. They show promising performance early on, big round muscle and hip shape, as well as great hair and style. The calves are easily some of the thriftiest babies at calving time, being quick to get up and go. 172J is backed by Mackfrid 27F and all her successes as a donor as well, the females should be of high quality!

MITCHELL’s BOOTLEGGER 87G

When you can keep a huge percentage of your two-year-olds calves for both the bull pen and replacement pen you know you’ve selected the right blend of calving ease production. Bootlegger 87G’s dam and grand dam are both still here and still some of the best producing cows on the place. 87G’s sire “Dillenger 116D” was one of the most sound mature bulls to walk here, and we still regret limiting his use mainly to the heifer pen as his daughters are easily the best milking, most sound and easy calving group of mature cows around. 87G’s daughters are very good uddered, milky and feminine.

MAVV GALEN 48G

Galen 48G has had 45 cows for the past two breeding seasons and using him heavily is a no-brainer for us. Dark red, full of meat and muscle, long as a freight train and with very correct feet. The ten sons we have catalogued are very much a tribute to his potency as a sire. All the females retained in the herd are good uddered, sound, and milking well. We are looking forward to having a big influx of Galen 48G sired replacements calving again in the upcoming year.

CHERRY CREEK ELITE 8G

When viewing Elite 8G we were immediately drawn to his performance record and herd bull presence. Once we had seen his dam and sister, we knew the maternal quality would benefit our program as well - and to say we are impressed would be an understatement! The udder quality of his first set of females is outstanding. We kept a big percentage of his daughters and they have nearly all calved first cycle in good condition and are fantastic mothers. We set out to incorporate power without sacrificing calving and maternal traits. The 8G calves are born easily and they are bright and thrifty. They have excellent growth, nice skull shape, lots of length, and most are cherry red.

SKORS Kill Switch 148G

Kill Switch 148G was selected out of Skor Simmentals final bull sale following their dispersal and was the second high seller at $17,000. He is a big barreled, moderate framed herd sire with good muscle expression. His calves have proven to be growthy and soft middled, and yet they come easy with very moderate birthweights, just as his impressive set of EPDs predicted. He is above average in every single EPD category. We retained Mitchells Electric 77J from this sire and are so impressed with the curve bending growth.

CIRCLE G HANDPRINT 4H

We sourced Handprint 4H from Circle G knowing that we can always count on the maternal strength of Garth’s program. 4H is in the top 1% for weaning weight, yearling weight, ribeye area and terminal index. He also maintains great calving ease and maternal numbers across the board. This herd sire calves well with vigorous, bright, strong calves. Anyone looking to add weight and substance to their calf crop should start here. All the other positive traits that come with this sire are just a bonus.

MITCHELL’S ELECTRIC 77J

Here is every commercial cattleman’s dream bull. Calves that are shaped right, moderate at birth, and then surpass all expectations for growth. This first set of bull calves has averaged 920 pounds off the mountain and will go on to be the heavyweights of the pen without a doubt. Electric 77J has spent every summer earning his keep as a range bull after his time in a breeding pasture. Despite this he maintains impressive shape and condition, easily surpassing all the prairie-purchased bulls his age. His calves are excellent footed individuals, super sound on the move, and the temperament is second to none. The EPDs predicted accurately –77J is one of the best in the breed across the board

ERIXON LAD 207F

State of War 207F was the high-selling black Simmental bull in Erixon Simmentals 2020 sale. We purchased him based on his phenomenal calving ease traits, curve bending growth and foot quality. I can’t say that I ever remember having a herd sire whose calves consistently came with nearly a week early gestation. Never mind how much explosive growth they have after birth. The replacements in the pen certainly do not look like heifers’ calves. It makes a huge difference to your calf crop when you can count on first calvers to raise calves that fit right in with the rest. Daughters of 207F have developed well suspended, tidy udders. They are long topped and good footed, feminine, very good mothers and their calves display great vigour.

SKORS CAPTAIN MORGAN 195G

Progeny of the Captain Morgan 195G herd sire have been very consistent in type. They are heavy haired, sound, very attractive fronted, strong topped and possess an eye appealing muscle pattern. For a bull that is so stout he calves very well, we would breed him to our more mature heifers comfortably. Circle G Simmentals purchased his dam, the second high selling red cow, from Skor Simmentals dispersal for $13,000. 195G is one we just can’t stop using, each set of calves is just as exciting as the last. His daughters have ample milk, very consistent frame size and are keeping condition well.

Never did we think that this big volume, well-muscled herd bull would turn into our heifer pen specialist. But as I write this, we have finished the first cycle and 44J has calved impeccably on all our black heifers. MORE’S HITCHHIKER 2H

After the success we’ve had with the first State of War son we quickly purchased another. There is so much that Hart State of War 056C has to offer in this industry. Foot and leg structure, the ability to get out and cover ground, ease of calving and explosive growth. We are already finding that 056C is being crossed on cows with some of the worst maternal and calving ease traits. With Hitchhiker 2H we found CE, BW, MCE and API were all positive on both sides of his pedigree, which is the kind of consistency and predictability we want to see.

CIRCLE G INSTINCT 33J

Another good herd sire purchased from Circle G Simmentals based on the merit of Garth Cutler’s very impressive cowherd. Instinct has already proven to add sound foot structure, bone, and body mass, along with that sought after money-stripe white face. After viewing the dam of Instinct 33J we are sure his daughters will become favourites with beautiful udders. He has seen a much larger group of cows this breeding season, and we impatiently await the results.

RED KENRAY RESOURCE 48J

48J has been one of the best range bulls to ever come our way, and so when he came back off the mountain in such excellent condition, we decided he’d earned a place in a big pasture of cows. He is sound footed and certainly covers country. Good disposition, lots of rib and easy fleshing ability, and now that we’ve got a big 2024 calf crop on the ground we can happily say he’s calved very well.

RED W SUNRISE TYCOON 658H

Tycoon 658H was purchased for $17,000 from W Sunrise. He is a soft made calving ease bull with loads of natural thickness and shape. Dark red, neat little head, and he moves well on excellent feet. 658H has great EPD’s across the board. We used him on both heifers and cows with great results. His sons blend calving ease and growth seamlessly.

RED MITCHELL’S UTAH 65H

We retained this young herd sire with great anticipation for his first calf crop. After scouring through some breeders pens on the prairies, we decided the most solid made bull was in our own pen. 65H has dark feet with a ton of heel, he moves very well and performed impressively. His sire, Utah, insured that the EPD’s, calving ease and growth would all be good. As for his dam, she did very well to produce a bull of this caliber on her first try. All these consistent production traits lead to a uniform calf crop born with ease, replacements who will have increased milk and will yield more pounds of calf come pay day. His first set of daughters are easily the biggest bodied, strongest made Angus replacement females.

RED MITCHELL’S PARKS 6J

Without a doubt one of the most sleep-easy heifer bulls we have used in a long time. We haven’t assisted a single angus heifer, these calves are born easy, bright, and full of vigour! While Parks 6J is phenomenal for calving ease, he still maintains an impressive frame and has matured well. His dam is a long-bodied female with big sweeping rib shape and a nicely attached udder.

RED WVR RESOLUTION 290J

A U2 Resolve son who has excellent calving ease traits. Backed by the beautiful MEM Holly 29Y donor cow who has a great udder and can be appreciated for her foot quality, length of body and sweeping rib. He has many daughters in the replacement pen who pattern much like Holly 29Y herself.

The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par at the sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after full settlement has been made. All settlements must be made in Canadian funds with the sale clerks before any cattle will be released.

Bidding:

Each animal will sell to the highest bidder, the seller reserves the right to pass the bull.

Disputes:

Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in dispute. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be final.

Announcements:

All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to such disclosures.

Purchasers Risk:

Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. We strongly recommend insuring your purchase for full value.

Free delivery to central points in BC.

Health:

All animals in the sale have met all necessary health requirements.

Insurance:

All bulls will be covered in the yards by Hartford Insurance; insurance will be available for long term coverage.

Breeder’s Guarantee:

The animals in this sale are guaranteed per the breeder’s guarantee of the breed association they are registered with. In the unlikely event that a bull proves to be a non-breeder he will be replaced with a bull of equal value. Should this not be possible, an adjustment will be made to reflect the value of the bull in question or a credit will be issued towards a future purchase. At no time will we be responsible for any costs exceeding the original purchase price and no guarantee is made that semen from any bull will freeze. This guarantee will not cover any situation where the animal has been subjected to mismanagement or physical injury and we will not guarantee any animal that is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale. Insurance is available sale day and we strongly recommend that you take advantage of this service. We will do our utmost to work with you to ensure your satisfaction should any problems arise.

Rights and Obligations:

The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller and be equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and obligations of the two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of this sale.
