2018 WTBOA Yearling & Mixed Sale A highlight of the summer Washington scene by Susan van Dyke

T

Summer Outbreak of Racing Stars As summer racing at Emerald Downs gains momentum, several WTBOA Sale graduates are making a name for themselves. It began in May with one-two performances of Ima Happy Cat and Brilliant Bird in the Seattle Stakes and continued with the champion sister act of Invested Prospect/ Citizen Kitty’s one-three performance in the Hastings Stakes. Sippin Fire became the first triple stakes winner of the 2018 when the sophomore runner won the Coca-Cola and Seattle Slew stakes, followed by the prestigious Muckleshoot Derby. Once the juvenile races started, 2017 sale graduates began leaving their winning impressions with Jackwain, Baja Sur, Money inthe Starrs and My Grandpa all taking maiden special weight races at first asking. The first stakes for the two-year-old class were run on July 15 and WTBOA alumni were primed to set a winning example. 2017 sales topper Baja Sur proved the easiest of winners in the King County Express Stakes

Second Chances by Merri Melde

A “holme” for life

T

he most memorable aspect about the Thoroughbred mare Ol Mom’s Holme, who raced at Longacres and Yakima Meadows between 1989 and 1993, was neither her looks (an average-sized, plain dark bay), nor particularly her breeding (Noholme Way out of Ol Moms Eldorado, by Rule the Seas), nor her race record (five wins in 30 starts in cheap claiming races, career earnings of $12,005). Her renown was of an entirely different facet: her cantankerousness. “Oh my goodness,” one of her grooms, Kay Sides, commented. “I groomed that horse . . . she was an ornery [sic] one. Didn’t know if you’d get bit or kicked on a daily basis.” I devoted an entire short eBook to her titled Ol Mom’s Holme: The Witch. But a response to this eBook from a reader illuminated another side of this mare: that she was adored by her breeder and owner, and that today, at age 32, she’s cherished by her subsequent owners in her forever home. Marlene Spencer, a long-time racetracker from Graham, wrote me after reading my story. “My neighbor has an old mare named Ol Mom’s Holme,” she wrote. “She ran (not well) at Longacres as a three-year-old and was trained by Ben Harris. My neighbor inherited her and her yearling colt from her dentist about 14 years ago. “She was very cranky when I first knew her but has become sweeter over time – as long as you don’t brush her or do anything else she doesn’t like. I’m wondering if she could actually be the filly you wrote about?” Indeed, this was the very same mare, Ol Mom’s Holme, a 1986 filly bred and owned by Victor Moriyasu, and now living in Spencer’s neighbor’s backyard. Sumner Beginnings “It’s kind of a fun story,” said current owner Kathie Burr. “Dr. Moriyasu was the dentist in Sumner that I went to from the time I was four years old, when he was a brand new dentist. As a kid I loved animals and found out he had horses, so every time we saw him, a couple times a year, we would talk horses.” Talking horses meant discussing Moriyasu’s racehorses that he bred and raised in Sumner and raced at Longacres and Yakima Meadows with various trainers, 88

Dave and Kathie Burr with Ol Mom’s Holme. settling on eventual Washington Racing Hall of Fame trainer Ben Harris. Burr and Moriyasu’s friendship and mutual interest in horses continued for decades. When Dr. Moriyasu died in January of 2000, Burr was crushed. “He’d been almost like a second father. He was such a kind man, and we always talked about his horses. Before he died, he had kind of offered Ol Mom to me. “We’d never had horses. We didn’t know anything about having horses, but my husband Dave and I loved the idea. So we went over and visited Ol Mom in October of 1999 in Yakima, where she was boarded. I met her and her son.” Ol Lazy Lightning was a yearling at the time. The day after Moriyasu’s death, his daughter Sue Moriyasu got a call from the veterinarian that there was a problem with Ol Mom. “Sue was just devastated, because she had just lost her dad, and she was about to lose his last broodmare,” Burr recalled. “We do not know exactly what happened to Ol Mom,” Sue Moriyasu said. “The vet tried to manage the lameness with medication, but eventually told me that Ol Mom needed to go

to WSU (Washington State University), where I was a vet student at the time, for care. The suspicion was that she stepped on a nail. The end result was a very severe navicular bursitis. By the time she made it to the vet school – half of the navicular bone was gone.” Moriyasu counts the eventual recovery a miracle, not only because of the severity of the injury, but the fact that the mare didn’t end up with laminitis in the opposite hind foot, because she was practically three-legged lame by the time she reached the vet school. “At WSU they put the first-ever epidural catheter in her and were able to get her bearing weight on the injured leg before the good leg went bad,” Moriyasu explained. “This also helped counteract some of the scar tissue and muscle and tendon strictures that were developing in her bad leg because she was not bearing weight on it. “ When Ol Mom finally recovered from the ordeal and returned home to Yakima, Moriyasu still wanted the Burrs to have the mare and her son. “Well, we were crazy,” Burr said. “In October we brought home Ol Mom and her son ‘Ichiban’ (Ichi) who at that point was about 1 1/2 years old and unbroken, only able to load in the trailer, and that’s about it. “So that was the beginnings of us having the two horses. We boarded them in Tacoma for several years while we learned how to own horses. Ol Mom was a bit of a handful then, but she has changed so much over the years. I think it’s because of the close contact for the last 12 years that we’ve had her here in Graham, with us where we live on the property. “Marlene Spencer lives right next door, so she has been instrumental in helping me keep these horses going.” Today’s Routines Keeping the old mare going involves plenty of hands-on time and a solid routine that Ol Mom herself insists on. “We take a mile and a half walk every morning with the two horses, and in the evening we walk another half mile. “And Ol Mom is the go-getter. When she knows that’s about to happen, she walks straight to the gate, and she tries to push the gate open. She knows how far we normally Washington Thoroughbred

Kathie provides a lot of hands-on care and a solid routine that includes twice-daily walks with both horses, Ol Mom and her son Ichiban. “She’s always ready to go . . . everywhere her son goes, she goes.” walk, and at the end she’ll turn us around, and off we come back home then. “You can just still see what she probably was like in those original years at the track, because she’s still the mare. She’s still the bossy one. She pushes her son around, even though she’s 32.” Burr started Ichi under saddle as a twoyear-old and was the first one to get on him before sending him to a trainer; now she takes lessons on him and occasionally rides him in the woods, which he loves. Burr will take her husband or a friend (often Spencer) and Ol Mom along; the companion will hand walk Ol Mom while Burr and Ichi go off and have their canter through the forest. “Ol Mom knows the gig and wants to get out. She’s always ready to go and if you’re not looking, she’ll load herself into the trailer. She is just crazy. She’s just like the partner that comes along – everywhere her son goes, she goes.” Last winter was a little tough on the old mare when she suddenly came down with a virus. Burr and her husband Dave were up one whole night with Ol Mom while she was

on IV fluids, but she recovered from that about as quickly as it had come. “Otherwise her health has been really good and her weight looks pretty good. She has to have special soft food, and she’ll only eat a certain amount at a time. So since I’m retired, I stay home most of the time, and I feed her five different meals a day. She quids [spits out] hay, so she doesn’t get any calories from that, so we have to do the special feeding.” Over the years, after-effects of the original navicular bursitis occasionally flared up, but Burr learned barefoot trimming, and has gone that path with Ol Mom. She puts boots on whenever they go out for walks. “I think the walking has made a huge difference in her life. We started that when she was probably in her late 20s, and I just really feel that’s extended her life.” Some habits die hard though: don’t expect Ol Mom to thank you for a grooming session. “Even to this day, she doesn’t like to be groomed much,” Burr laughs. “We have to really carefully groom her, find the little scratchy spots. If she doesn’t like

Ol Mom’s health has been pretty good, except for a virus last winter that required the Burrs to be up one whole night with her while she was on IV fluids. Summer 2018

it, she whips her head around and lets you know. She’s still got that in her, that little personality. “But she does love to have her face cuddled now. So every time I go out to her – and I’m out there ten times a day feeding and doing things – she’ll stop and walk right over to me because she wants her face rubbed.” And though Ol Mom’s Holme was unimpressive as a Washington racehorse, and didn’t have the adoration of grooms and exercise riders and fans such as a Captain Condo or a Delicate Vine, she still got what every racehorse deserves: a forever home with people who love and dote on her. “It means the world to me that Ol Mom and Ichi are in such a good home. Kathie and Dave have taken such good care of them, and it has been such a gift that I do not have to worry about whether they are being taken care of,” said Sue Moriyasu. “My dad would be so happy to see how things have turned out with Ol Mom, Ichi, and the Burrs. I know that they could have ended up in a much worse situation; I see it all the time with animals. They are so vulnerable; it gives me such peace of mind knowing they are in such a loving home.” “The two of them have taught us so much,” Burr said. “Ol Mom is just a sparkle. “We love her to death! It’s been really special.” According to the multi-talented Merri Melde, “Horses pretty much says it all: horse photographer, writer, photojournalist, artist, claw hammer banjo player, horse packer, spotted owl hooter, wildlife technician, trail builder, carriage driver, sound engineer, theater techie, world traveler, former racetrack groom, rabid obsessed endurance rider, Tevis Cup finisher. But not all at the same time.” Visit her website at thequestrianvagabond.com. 89

Dr. Rodney E. Orr’s homebred two-year-old Lorelie G earned a $1,000 WTBOA Homebred Incentive Program (WHIP) bonus after the daughter of Harbor the Gold won a maiden $25,000 claiming race on July 1. Leading Washington Sires Statistics are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems, Inc. While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, Washington Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. Included are sires standing in the state of Washington. Deceased or retired sires will remain in the “leading lifetime” lists until they no longer have Washington-bred runners, but will only be included in the “current year” lists until after their last Washington-bred runners have raced as two-year-olds. Does not include Southern Hemisphere racing. Bold-type represents the leader under that category.

Stakes Winners

Washington-bred, WTBOA-sold and/or at Emerald Downs

tally, the bay City Zip filly has won five races, including victories at Sacramento (California Governor’s Cup Handicap, by a three-quarter length margin), Golden Gate Fields (Camilla Urso Stakes, by one length) and Hastings Racecourse (Brighouse Belles Stakes, by 3 1/2 lengths and Vancouver Sun Handicap, by three lengths). With the addition of her four-length victory in the Washington State Legislators Stakes, Alliford Bay has now won four consecutive stakes. “She’s a very tactical filly,” said winning rider Julien Couton, “and we had a great trip.” The race also marked the fourth consecutive Emerald stakes win for the Auburn track’s 2016-17 leading trainer Blaine Wright, following tallies with Invested Prospect (who finished third to her stablemate in the Washington State Legislators Stakes) in the Hastings Stakes, Riser in the Governor’s Stakes and Bella Mia in the Kent Stakes. The Wright/Couton combination, through June 17, have won 23 of 55 races over the last two seasons, which includes six stakes wins. Alliford Bay is one of 73 stakes winners sired by Grade 1 Saratoga juvenile winner City Zip who passed away due to chronic foot issues in July 2017. A half-brother to Horse of the Year Ghostzapper, City Zip left a legacy of top runners, including Canadian Horse of the Year Catch a Glimpse and fellow champions and/or Grade 1 winners Dayatthespa, Work All Week, Finest City, Dana My Love, Collected, Zipessa, Bustin Stones and Personal Diary. Another of his top runners was multiple Grade 2 winner Alert Bay, who has earned over $1.2-million for Redekop and is also trained by Wright. City Zip had stood his final season at Lane’s End for an advertised fee of $50,000 where he was a favorite among the Kentucky farm’s barn staff due to “his good mind and careful demeanor.”

John and Janene Maryanski’s 2017 Washington champion two-year-old filly Bella Mia seems back on track to repeat another championship season after her over two lengths clear tally in the Kent Stakes. The talented filly had finished second to Ima Happy Cat in her 2018 debut in the Seattle Stakes, which was run on May 20, where Bella Mia had gone off as the nine-to-five favorite in the six-furlong feature and Ima Happy Cat was second choice at 11-to-five. In the Kent Stakes, Ima Happy Cat was the bettors’ choice at 11-to-ten and Bella Mia was right behind her at two-to-one odds. Bella Mia and Ima Happy Cat broke in tandem and raced at each other’s throats before Ima Happy Cat gave way to her rival in the final furlong. “She’s really improved from her first start last month,” said winning rider Julien Couton. “She was on the top of her game today.” Auburn residents John and Janene Maryanski also co-own (with Gerry and Gail Schneider’s Riverbend Farm) 2016 Washington champion filly Invested Prospect, w h o wo n t h e May 2 8 H ast i n gs S takes , and were partners with Michael and Amy Feuerborn with 2005 state champion juvenile male Schoolin You.

Though graded stakes-placed in the 2017 Longacres Mile Handicap (G3), Dedicated to You’s first place award in the Budweiser Stakes was his first black-type win in 11 tries and 15 starts overall. The grandson of stamina influence Dynaformer (a son of 1972 Epsom Derby winner Roberto) has been highly thought of by his connections since winning a mile maiden special weight race for three-year-olds at Emerald Downs in just his second start. Dedicated to You’s only inbreeding in five generations is a 4S x 5D cross to Roberto’s sire Hail to Reason, the 1960 champion twoyear-old. Dedicated to You’s win came after the disqualification of two-to-five Budweiser Stakes favorite Riser, who led gate-to-wire but was placed fifth and last by the stewards after that runner came out sharply and bumped Barkley at the start. They felt “that the incident cost Barkley the opportunity of a better placing.” The 2018 Budweiser winner is just one of many in a long line of top stakes winners to appear in Washington after the unraced maiden Temperence Hill mare Katherine Jean, bred to Sauce Boat, was purchased for $12,000 at the 1990 Keeneland November sales by Pacific Northwest bloodstock agent Dana Halvorson for the account of Ron and Barbara Ratcliff and their Coal Creek Farm. That first foal, Lorrains Love, would become the granddam of 2012 Washington horse of the year Makors Finale and his four-time state champion half-brother Absolutely Cool for Oak Harbor horseman Karl Krieg. For the Ratcliff family, Katherine Jean produced two stakes winners and two stakesplaced winners and her daughter One for You (one of twin daughters sired by British Horse of the Year Dayjur, the other one, the also aptly named One for Me, is the dam of Dedicated to You), two stakes-placed runners and is the granddam of Coal Creek Farm homebred My Heart Goes On, who was named 2016 Washington champion juvenile filly. One for You is also the dam of a two-yearold filly by Shakin It Up named If You Want, a yearling colt by Broken Vow named I’m Leaving You and foaled a colt from the first crop of 2016 Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner Tamarkuz this past spring.

Bella Mia is one of 20 state champions so far sired by Bar C Racing Stables’ powerhouse stallion Harbor the Gold. The now 17-year-old son of Seeking the Gold was also represented in Washington last year by horse of the year Mach One Rules and champion two-year-old colt Elliott Bay. In fact, 13 of Harbor the Gold’s champions have earned a title at two, including the previously mentioned Mach One Rules, whose current earnings sit at $308,526. That ranks the runner in third among his sire’s top progeny, only behind two-time Washington horse of the year Noosa Beach ($525,555) and the ill-fated 2016 California juvenile champion California Diamond ($469,970).

The Tom Wenzel-trained filly returned to the races on May 5 with a gate-to-wire victory in a $25,000 optional claiming (N) race, which she won by 2 1/2 lengths. She followed that race with two fourth place finishes in the Seattle and Kent stakes before going off at $13.10-to-one odds in the Irish Day Stakes.

champion older filly or mare Infernal McGoon, who was bred by the late John and Doris Konecny out of their 1988 Washington champion juvenile filly Flame McGoon. Infernal McGoon was raced by Jody Peetz, as was her state champion daughter Talk to My Lawyer. A 2009 daughter of Lawyer Ron, Talk to My Lawyer unfortunately died after producing only two foals, including No Talking Back, a daughter of Flatter who was stakes-placed last year for Peetz and has already won two allowance/optional claiming races at Emerald this spring. Infernal McGoon is also the dam of fiverace winner and $57,998 earner Hetty, a 2010 daughter of Cahill Road, and additional fillies and winners Livinintheleftlane, by Harbor the Gold, and Knife River, by Smoke Glacken. A $16,000 WTBOA Summer Sale RNA, Ima Happy Cat raced twice as a two-year-old at Emerald Downs in maiden special weight events where she was a distant third (in July) and distant second (in September). Put on the shelf to mature, the gray/roan filly’s next outing came at Golden Gate Fields on April 28 where she drew off to win a maiden allowance by 3 3/4 lengths in gate-to-wire fashion. A field of seven went forward in the Seattle Stakes, the first stakes of the 23rd Emerald Downs meet. Included in the group of sophomore distaffers were 2017 Washington and Emerald Downs champion two-year-old filly Bella Mia – in her first start back since winning the WA Cup Juvenile Filly Stakes last September – Oregon champion Stay in Grace, and two fillies who had drawn off to win their 2018 debuts at Emerald Downs, first-time starter Spot On and Diamonds R, who had run fourth in the Gottstein Futurity last fall. Brilliant Bird and favorite Bella Mia dueled together for the early lead and through the first half-mile. Ima Happy Cat, who was bumped at the start, was “forwardly placed” before making a winning move under 2016-17 Emerald leading rider Rocco Bowen in the lane and drawing off by 2 1/2 lengths. “When I straightened her up in the stretch, I was loaded with horse today,” said Bowen, who was winning his 26th stakes at the Auburn oval. “She got a monster figure in her (maiden) win at Golden Gate. She’s a great horse.” Ima Happy Cat had received a 74 Beyers rating for that score. Bred by Dale Mahlum in California, Ima Happy Cat is the third stakes winner sired by her second crop sire Smiling Tiger, a multiple Grade 1 stakes winner (and also a WTBOA sale graduate) who stands for a $6,500 fee at Harris Farms in California. Ima Happy Cat is also the second stakes winner produced out of 2003 Washington

After stalking the early pace set by four-to-five race favorite Bella Mia, Diamonds R gained the lead in the stretch to defeat that rival by a length. The three sophomore filly stakes run so far at the 2018 Emerald meet have each boasted a different winner after Ima Happy Cat won the Seattle Stakes and Bella Mia took the Kent Stakes. Diamonds R is from the first crop of six-time stakes winner Alternation, whose million-plus earnings include wins in the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes and Oaklawn Handicap and Grade 3 Pimlico Special Stakes and Razorback Handicap. The son of Distorted Humor – whose first stakes winner came the day prior to Diamonds R’s tally in the Irish Day Stakes when three-year-old Alter Moon won the Azalea Stakes by five lengths at Gulfstream Park – stood the 2018 breeding season at Pin Oak Stud in Versailles, Kentucky, for a $6,000 fee. Diamonds R is the fourth foal, but first winner, out of Epitome of a Lady, who won the Harvest Futurity at Fresno for the partnership of Jerry Schlaich, Dr. George Todaro and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer in 2008. The three-time juvenile winner is also the dam of a 2016 colt by Jimmy Creed and a 2017 colt by Hard Spun. Purchased for $15,000 by Todaro’s agent Bob Cappelletti at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Diamonds R’s pedigree received a major update in 2017 after Perfectly Perfect’s – her second dam – stakes-winning half-sister Above Perfection, by In Excess (Ire), produced her second Grade 1 winner in Always Dreaming, a colt by Bodemeister who took both the Kentucky and Florida derbies that spring.

Emerald Downs top-ranked three-year-old in 2017 after his wins in the Emerald Downs Derby and Coca-Cola Stakes and near miss in the Seattle Slew Stakes, Riser finished his sophomore campaign with a third place finish in the Grade 3 British Columbia Derby at Hastings Racecourse in September. He was then away from the races until May when he made his 2018 debut in the Turf Sprint Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs over a very rainy Kentucky Derby weekend. He finished eighth in that five-furlong grass race in his second attempt at turf racing.

All of Invested Prospect’s eight wins have come from 5 1/2- to 6 1/2-furlongs and all but two of the respected sprinter’s victories have come by open lengths, including her 8 1/2-length maiden special weight score. Her lone win outside the confines of the Auburn track was during her 2016 championship season at the Oaktree at Pleasanton meet. Invested Prospect stems from a strong family of champions, both in Washington and in Canada. Starting with her third dam, the Ack Ack mare Skysweeper, who entered the Washington broodmare ranks at Northwest Farms in 1982, each of Invested Prospect’s first three dams has produced two state champions. For Skysweeper it was Washington Racing Hall of Fame distaffer Firesweeper and sprint champion Serenity Road. Second dam Nightatmisskittys – 2007 Washington broodmare of the year – foaled champion juvenile full siblings Sundance Circle and No Constraints; and 2016 Washington broodmare of the year No Constraints foaled 2017 champion older mare Citizen Kitty, in addition to Invested Prospect. And if that weren’t enough, Skysweeper’s stakes-winning half-sister Primarily was voted top Canadian broodmare in 2000 after foaling two Canadian champion juvenile fillies among her four stakes winners. In fact, you need to go back to Invested Prospect’s tenth dam, Mary Maid, an 1894 daughter of Eolus, before you find a mare that didn’t have at least one stakes winner to her credit. A little further back in time, Invested Prospect’s 13th dam, Squeeze’em, a 1896 daughter of the great Lexington, produced 1878 Kentucky Derby winner Day Star, and her 15th dam, Magnolia, an 1841 mare by Glencoe, was the dam of 1864 Travers Stakes winner Kentucky. It isn’t until *Myrtle, an 1834 daughter of Mameluke and the dam of Magnolia, that you finally find an imported mare in this strongly North American family.

Returned to Emerald Downs, Riser – who races for Jared Chappell’s Chappell Alpine Farms LLC of Sugar City, Idaho – went off as the $1.30-to-one favorite among the five stakes horses contesting the Governor’s Stakes. With Juan Hernandez in the irons, the gray/ roan colt broke on top and was never headed, as he “drew off through the lane with complete authority” to win by over four lengths. Riser is one of 52 stakes winners sired by US Grade 1 and French Group 3 winner Mizzen Mast, who is one of four active stallions to sire two Breeders’ Cup winners in the same year. The now 20-year-old son of champion turf male Cozzene stood for a $10,000 stud fee in 2018 at Juddmonte Farms in Lexington, Kentucky. Sippin Fire has made a lot of people happy in his short career, led by partners David Israel (of Enumclaw), Joe Withee (Auburn and the Director of Broadcast Publicity for Emerald Downs), Al Adams (Seattle), Charlie Clark (Seattle), Angela Wilson (Auburn) and Steve Pilgrim (Kent), who make up his ownership under How We Roll #4. Sippin Fire won his first outing as a twoyear-old, a five-furlong Emerald Down maiden special weight race. He next ran fourth in the Emerald Express Stakes and then was second by three-quarters of a length behind 2017 Washington/Emerald juvenile champion Elliott Bay in the WTBOA Lads Stakes. At their next meeting, the two sons of Harbor the Gold switched places, with Sippin Fire trouncing Elliott Bay by 5 1/2 lengths in the WA Cup Juvenile Colts and Geldings Stakes. Injury then precluded Sippin Fire from an attempt to become the third Gottstein Futurity winner for his dam, 2015 Washington broodmare of the year Bahati. In his first start back since August, Sippin Fire finished fifth – though beaten only 2 1/2 lengths – in the Auburn Stakes won by Whatwasithinking, but a quarter length in front of Elliott Bay. In the 6 1/2-furlong Coca-Cola Stakes, Sippin Fire – the second betting choice behind Whatwasithinking – stalked the early pace set

In his first start at Emerald Downs, Randall & Rossi LLC and Lucarelli Racing Corporation’s Whatwasithinking rushed through in the final yards to win the Auburn Stakes by a nose over Vicente’s Shadow. Whatwasithinking had gone off as the $2.20-toone favorite in the six-panel race. A $20,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, Whatwasithinking had made a winning debut last November when he scored a three-length tally in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race at Golden Gate Fields. Sent to Turf Paradise, his second outing came in a $30,000 optional claiming race (N) on January 29, which he won by 11/4 lengths. He next ran fifth in the Turf Paradise Derby before returning to Golden Gate where he took a $40,000 optional claiming (N) race by three-quarters of a length. Both Whatwasithinking and Vicente’s Shadow were bred in Kentucky by Craig and Carrie Brogden’s Machmer Hall. Whatwasithinking’s second dam Shot Gun Favorite, a 2000 daughter of Group 2 winner and Grade 1-placed Eltish, was also a stakes winner. As a three-year-old she won the Prairie Oaks, the restricted OBS Sprint Stakes (filly division) and placed third in both the Indiana Breeders’ Cup Oaks (G3) and Top Corsage Stakes en route to earnings of $202,126 and a 4.81 SSI.

Poet’s Corner

Bloodstock consultant and WTBOA board member emeritus Claudia Canouse initiated the Washington Thoroughbred “Poet’s Corner,” to which poets and would-be poets can submit equine-related work, perhaps honoring equine and human heroes on occasion. This issue’s edition honors the late Dr. A. L. “Bud” Hallowell, with a commemorative poem penned by Canouse, as well as two of Hallowell’s own poetic works, along with one of his sketches, which have been generously shared with us by his daughter Lynn.

DR. A. L. “BUD” HALLOWEL

ADOBE POINT RANCH COW CAMP

Seems I have known him forever, my kind of person most clever He and his wife, Pat, who was the very dearest kind of friend. He did vet work for a living. She restored mansions, was most giving He cared for her with gentle kindness up until the end.

There’s those of us hears the buckaroo lingo; Why it’s so, I shore can’t say. Like the Border Collie, McNab or Dingo, I reckon it’s in our DNA. Flat hats and reatas and git-downs and chinks, Bosals and heel knots and caballos with kinks. It’s “Ride the line, Partner, and don’t never show weak!” We’re all rawhide and horsehair and buckaroo speak!

by Claudia Atwell Canouse

Now alone, with health prospects grim, luckily daughter Lynn is there for him. Hospice, too, and caretakers for twenty-four hours a day Audrey, Marty and Maribel with Steve and Dennis in house dwell to ease Bud’s pain, provide what little comfort can be brought his way. He’s one you don’t remember when you met ‘cause always been here, but then that cannot be. Must have known him from farms he had as clients. A broodmare vet extraordinaire, “magic fingers” to palpate a mare Kept up his studies, conferences, shared the latest science. Dewaine Moore at Rainier Stable, the Pabsts of Blue Ribbon, most able, would challenge any good vet to absolutely know his stuff. Webber Crest and Homestretch Farm crews, always hungry for latest news kept Bud on his toes and filled his days with work enough.

THE UNSOLVED RIDDLE by Dr. A. L. “Bud” Hallowell

Most of my friends just call me Bud And I still think I’m quite a stud. In my mind I’m still a kid Tho’ things don’t work quite like they did. In my head I’m just nineteen, But my joints don’t bend; I kinda lean. In my heart I’m twenty-three But somethin’s sorta wrong with me Down both sides and up the middle. Life remains an unsolved riddle.

A Renaissance Man plus Cowboy, the arts and artists brought great joy. Bud could sculpt a horse and rider, too, to make a bronze for all, could ride the trails in cowboy boots, write a poem or research his roots. He loved England, friends there, author of “All Creatures Great and Small.” Had great good friends around here, too, Pabsts and Griffins, Terry and Mary Lou An extra special fondness for Ed and Jean Welch of Tall Cedars, The Penneys, first brilliant vet, Bob, who died too soon to finish his job as great Board member and Central Washington short course leader. Then Jim, special bonds held these two, as fast friends for years too few. So many others too numerous to name right here and now, But you all know just who you are, Bud has so many friends near and far. I feel special owning a Bud Hallowell sketch of a cow! He has given many his share of contributed time for care of the horse industry from boards and committees to State Racing Commission. Appointed by the Governor, served his terms, honest to the core Bud has always been careful and considered in his decisions. Whether raising horses like Tavy Blue or mentoring folks like me and you Bud’s life has been full of wonder, love, family, friends and art. Duty and work have fit like a glove. I’d guess he has found joy and love. Not bad for a very special guy both dedicated and smart. 108

News Items AT THE TRACK Bravazo Runs Powerful Second in Preakness Stakes Calumet Farm’s homebred Bravazo nearly got the better of future Triple Crown winner Justify when the son of Awesome Again “closed sharply to rapidly” finish second in the closing yards of the 1 3/16mile Preakness Stakes (G1) on May 19. On another sloppy day, much like Derby day, but this time with the addition of a thick layer of fog, D. Wayne Lukas-trained Bravazo nearly brought home Lukas’s sixth winner of the Baltimore stakes. Instead the triumph at Pimlico became Bob Baffert’s seventh win in the Maryland classic. Bravazo ran sixth in both the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1). Bravazo is the first foal out of $57,465 earner and seven-race winner Tiz o’ Gold, a 2007 daughter of Cee’s Tizzy. Her dam, Pep o’ Gold, by Slew o’ Gold, was bred in Washington by Charlie and Cindy Hoctor and Hugh and Kathy Shields. Pep o’ Gold was one of ten foals – including the stakesplaced Petersburg mare Pewterville – out of The Irish Lord mare Ginged Up, who won two races at Calder Race Course. Wesley Ward Spring Accomplishments Washington Racing Hall of Fame inductee Wesley Ward is well known for his early accomplishments with two-year-olds, so it is no surprise that his first-time starters won ten juvenile maiden special weight races during the 2018 spring Keeneland meeting (April 6-27). They include Mucho Amor, by Mucho Macho Man, a filly owned by Dave Mowat’s Ten Broeck Farm Inc. who is the first winner for her freshman sire. Ward’s ten-peat was featured on the first page of the April 30, 2018, Thoroughbred Daily News, along with a short ode to his accomplishment. In addition, Ward won three other races, including the Grade 2 Shakertown Stakes with Bound for Nowhere (who he also owns), by The Factor, at the Central Kentucky meet. Ward was represented by his 15th 2018 juvenile debut winner on June 2 at Monmouth Park when two-year-filly old Romani won a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight by seven lengths. On June 7, one of those previous 2018 Keeneland winners, Athens Queen, by Majestic Warrior, won the $150,000 Astoria Stakes at Belmont Park. Summer 2018

In her 2018 debut, Ward’s champion trainee Lady Aurelia, by Scat Daddy, ran second in the $100,000 Giant’s Causeway Stakes at Keeneland on April 14. Ward also bred and trains Happy Like a Fool, the three-year-old daughter of Distorted Humor who took the $150,000 Adena Springs Miss Preakness Stakes (G3) at Pimlico on May 18. Ward saddled his tenth winner at Royal Ascot when Shang Shang Shang – the lone filly in the field of ten two-year-olds – won the Norfolk Stakes (G2) on June 21. The unbeaten daughter of Shanghai Bobby took the five-furlong race by a narrow nose. Wardtrained Bound for Nowhere finished third in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee at the upscale English meet. The June 29, 2018, Thoroughbred Daily News featured an article on Ward after his most recent exploits. Written by Sid Fernando, the article is titled “Wesley’s World: an Owner, Breeder and Trainer.” Racing in Dubai Stormy Liberal, a Grade 1-winning full brother to El Dorado Farms LLC stallion Coast Guard, ran second by a half-length to Jungle Cat (Ire) in the $1-million Al Quoz Sprint (G1) at Meydan in Dubai on March 31. The six-year-old gelding pushed his money totals to $1,213,570.

He is trained by Peter Miller, who also conditions Roy H, the 2017 Eclipse Award winner who finished third in the $2-million Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) on the same card. Beaten by less than a length, Roy H, a six-year-old gelding by More Than Ready whose second dam is Washington broodmare of the year Taj Aire, came home with $200,000 in the 1,200-meter race. Roy H has earnings of $1,679,765. Probably the most impressive victory on the Dubai card came from Mendelssohn, as the three-year-old son of Scat Daddy won the $2-million UAE Derby (G1) by 15 1/2 lengths, setting a new track record of 1:55.18 for the 1,900-meter race. A 2017 Breeders’ Cup Grade 1 winner – as were Stormy Liberal and Roy H – Mendelssohn is a halfbrother to multiple US champion racemare Beholder and Grade 1 winner and prominent sire Into Mischief. One Last Bird, the third dam of the three top level performers, spent her final years in Washington were she foaled $311,152 stakes winner and graded stakesplaced Melanyhasthepapers, a 2001 son of Game Plan for, L. L. “Packy” and Julia McMurry’s Royal Match Stud Inc. Sun Downs Thoroughbred Results The six-day 2018 meet at Sun Downs, April 21–May 6, offered 53 races over three weekends of mixed racing in Kennewick.

GENERAL Correction In the “Get to Know the Face of” interview with WTBOA board member Melodie Bultena that appeared in the Spring issue, her husband’s name was incorrectly listed. The gentleman’s name is Doak Walker. We apologize for the mistake. 2018 Washington Racing Hall of Fame Finalists Now in its 18th season of honoring the cream of Washington racing, this year’s Washington Racing Hall of Fame will offer 15 finalists in four categories for 2018 honors. Four finalists were announced in each of the male horse, jockey and trainer categories, and three finalists will be considered in the breeder category. This year’s trainer finalists include active Emerald Downs trainers Doris Harwood and Frank Lucarelli, along with Washington trailblazers Cecil Jolly and Ruth Parton. Harwood is number one alltime with 67 stakes wins at Emerald Downs, while Lucarelli currently is tied with 2011 Hall of Fame inductee Tim McCanna (929) for most wins in Emerald Downs’ history. Jolly is most remembered for winning the 1957 Santa Anita Derby with Sir William (2006 Washington Hall of Fame inductee), and Parton was the first woman in American turf history to receive a trainer’s license and was among those who entered horses during Longacres first season of racing in 1933. Jockey finalists are led by a pair of active jockeys, Juan Gutierrez (who was sidelined last year with a shoulder injury) and Jennifer Whitaker. Also on the ballot are Basil Frazier and Richard “Tex” Hollingsworth, who both retired from race riding in the 1980s. Gutierrez ranks number two all-time at Emerald Downs with 1,320 wins, while Whitaker is the number one woman rider in the Auburn track’s history with 475 wins and the only woman rider to win the Longacres Mile in its 82-year history. Frazier won over 2,200 races riding mainly in Washington and British Columbia and Hollingsworth finished number five all-time in Longacres stakes victories. Each of this year’s finalists has a Longacres Mile win on their résumés. Summer 2018

This year’s male horse category features four top runners who plied their highly successful racing careers 50 or more years ago: Georgie Drum, Hank H., Mustard Plaster and Sirde. Named after Washington Hall of Fame breeder George Drumheller, Georgie Drum made national headlines in 1944 while defeating a star-studded field that included Kentucky Derby winner Pensive in the $50,000 Stars and Stripes Handicap at Arlington Park. A foal of 1943, Hank H. retired in 1953 as leading earner in Washington history at that time and is one of only three horses to win the Longacres Mile and Washington (now Gottstein) Futurity. 1964 Washington horse of the year Mustard Plaster defeated the great Kelso in the

$100,000 Californian Stakes at Hollywood Park. Sirde, a 1941 son of *Mio d’Arezzo, was the first Washington-bred to hit the $100,000 mark while running in California and New York against the likes of national champions Busher and Gallorette. Sirde was even featured on the cover of the April 6, 1946, The Blood-Horse. The breeder category alternates between pre-and-post 1970 accomplishments. Pre 1970 breeder finalists this year are: C. F. Flower, Maurice McGrath (Takhoma Farm) and the multi-generation Penney family. The winners are decided by votes from a 16-member committee composed of media, track officials, WTBOA and WHBPA.

The 2018 induction ceremony will be held on September 9 in conjunction with the final Sunday of Washington Cup XVI. Taylor Clawson Awarded 2018 THRUST Race For Education Scholarship Taylor Clawson, who is pursuing a doctoral degree in equine veterinary medicine at Washington State University (WSU), will be the beneficiary of a $1,750 scholarship given by the Washington Thoroughbred Foundation’s Thoroughbred Horse Racing’s United Scholarship Trust (THRUST) via the Kentucky-based Race For Education program. Among her extracurricular activities, she is vice president of the SCAAEP (Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners) and secretary of the Ag Animal Club. “This year I have set up many talks that involve equine nutrition, dentistry and Pony Club. As a vice president, I set up Pony Club Day where Pony Club members from Washington, Montana, Oregon and Idaho came to learn from AAEP members at WSU. This allowed my fellow students and I to teach what we have learned to children. I also set up an equine dental wet lab for members. This was a whole weekend of dental talks and hands-on learning.” Linnea Warlick Recipient of 2018 WTF/ WTBOA Veterinary Scholarship Linnea Warlick, who first fell in love with horses as a child in New Jersey, is the recipient of t h e Wa s h i n g t o n Thoroughbred Foundation/ Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association WSU third year veterinary scholarship for 2018. During her past two years at the Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine, she became “increasingly involved with the Thoroughbred industry through researching exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPD).” She also has worked in the equine exercise physiology research laboratory the past two years studying EIPH as both an exercise rider and student researcher. The busy student is also involved with a research lab that focuses on canine neurology. Among her current projects is an abstract that she hopes to present to the International Conference on Equine Exercise Physiology to be held in Australia this coming November. Warlick nurtured her love of equines by competing in equitation, jumpers and threeday eventing. Before transferring to WSU she majored in equine science and biology at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana. During her second year of veterinary school she adopted an off-the-track 114

Thoroughbred and they spend time training in dressage and going on trail rides – when her schedule allows. Warlick also enjoys painting, going on hiking adventures with her dog and exploring the Pacific Northwest. Washington Thoroughbred Earns Two Second Place Awards at American Horse Publications 2018 Media Awards Washington Thoroughbred came away with two second placings among the 823 entries from 108 2017 American Horse Publication (AHP) members, which was an increase of 40 entries from those submitted for 2016 publications. A total of 75 AHP members placed in the top five in one or more of 64 classes offered in the 2018 AHP Equine Media Awards competition. Washington Thoroughbred submitted five entries from the 2017 calendar year. WTBOA staffer Susan van Dyke’s Washington Racing Hall of Fame story on Delicate Vine, from the Winter issue, was chosen second out of 17 entries in the Personality Profile Single Article Circulation Under 10,000 (Print or Online). The judge’s comment on the piece stated “This article on Delicate Vine was well-researched and strongly written. The use of historical information and quotes from the people involved built a story that brought readers into a story that could have felt dry and remote.” Also receiving a second placement, in the Editorial Illustration category among five entries, was the cover from the Fall issue of the magazine that featured Erica Nordean’s “Blind Faith” painting, which had been chosen the winner of the Pat Hallowell Memorial Publication Award at 2017 Equine Art. The judge’s comment said “A bright and modern piece, I love the colorful washes and the drips.” The Equine Media Awards presentation was held on June 16 during the AHP “The Hunt for Excellence” Equine Media Conference in Hunt Valley, Maryland. Albert Johnson Elected into State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame It was announced in April that 2006 Washington Racing Hall of Fame inductee, National Racing Hall of Fame rider and multiple classic winning rider Albert Johnson will be inducted into the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame. NEWS FROM THE JOCKEY CLUB First Digital Certificate of Foal Registration Issued The Jockey Club announced in May that a colt by Pioneerof the Nile out of Mildly Offensive, born on February 19 at WinStar Farm, is the first foal to be issued a digital certificate of foal registration. The transition to digital foal certificates from hardcopies begins with the 2018 foal crop and was first announced at the Round Table Conference on Matters Pertaining to Racing in August 2016. Breeders, as well as those who act as agents for breeders, who do not have an Interactive Registration account should sign up for one at registry.jockeyclub.com so that they can access their certificates of foal registration. “The initial rollout of digital certificates has gone well so far,” said Matt Iuliano, executive vice president and executive director of The Jockey Club. “We look forward to feedback from breeders and farm personnel as they register their foals.” Among the expected benefits of digital certificates of foal registration are: users will be able to access digital certificates any time on computers and mobile devices; owners and agents will not have to worry about losing or damaging certificates; and operations will be streamlined, whether in the racing office, on the sales grounds, while transporting horses internationally, or when executing private transactions. Additional useful enhancements are expected to be rolled out in the future as various local and national racing entities Washington Thoroughbred

incorporate their authentications to the certificate. 2017 Washington TIP Performers In addition to being named Washington’s OTTB of 2017, Christina Klein’s Back to Wine (Baquero—Wine At Dawn, by Desert Wine) finished first among all The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive (TIP) horses in Western classes, being named co-champion horse in barrels and reserve champion in pleasure. A native of Seattle and permanent resident of Portland, Gary worked for a trucking company in 1960s before getting job at the track. He never left the Thoroughbred racing industry, working and learning from trainers Clint and Tom Roberts, Neil Knapp and Eulia Bischoff. Gary had been training on own for about ten years. Among his trainees were current runners Kota Copy and Beautymis. He also developed multiple winner Westley. Gary is survived by son, Rory, and daughter, Julie. Elaine Claire Peplinski Elaine Peplinski, 94, died in the Spokane Valley on March 24, 2018. Elaine was the third child and first daughter of six children born to Iral and Edna Stenson. She spent her childhood on a farm in the Fairfield/Waverly area. Elaine graduated in 1942 from Fairfield High School. She moved to Spokane in 1945 and worked as a teller at Old National Bank. Elaine met her husband, Jim, at the bank when he was making a deposit. Elaine and Jim were married September 4, 1948. They lived in the Spokane Valley where they raised three daughters. They were married for 67 years, until Jim passed away in 2016. Elaine and Jim enjoyed summers at their cabin on Lake Coeur d’Alene. They owned racehorses and watched them run at Playfair. They traveled to many states and enjoyed cruises to Alaska and the Mediterranean. Elaine is survived by daughters, Robin (Paul), Donita and Karla (John); grandchildren, Sandy, Chrissy, Scott, Kaitlin, Ethan and Jamie; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Megan, Chad, George and Brooklynn. Guy C. Roberts Guy C. Roberts, 89, passed away on June 2, 2018. Guy was born in Prosser to Joe and Rachel (Kincaide) Roberts on September 30, 1928, joining five brothers – Ron, Glen, John Wesley, Wayne and Boyd – and his only sister, Mona (Engblom). When Guy was three the family moved to a small farm in Sunnyside. In the eighth grade, he peeked through a school window and got a glimpse of the “new girl” Barbara Andrus, who would later become his wife. They began dating in high school and were married on August 29, 1949. During Guy’s senior year at Sunnyside High School, he left school to join the Coast Guard with his good friend Cliff McDonald. They served 1 1/2 years before taking “early retirement”, due to the fact that the US Department of Treasury ran out of funding for the Coast Guard. Guy returned to Sunnyside and earned his high school GED. He went to Washington State University for one semester before returning to Sunnyside to begin work with the John Deere dealership. He began working for his father-in-law, Leroy 116

“Bus” Andrus, in 1959 at his produce company Andrus and Funk. When the Funks retired to Spokane, Guy became Bus’s partner and it became Andrus and Roberts Produce Company. Guy started breeding and racing Quarter Horses in the early 1960s but quickly switched to Thoroughbreds. The first Guy Bar Farm-bred Thoroughbred winner was Fleet Yetta, who broke her maiden at Playfair in September 1968 and their first stakes winner came along in 1971 when Vitation won a division of the Mary Broderick Stakes at Longacres. Guy and Barbara bred three Washington state champions (Funboy, Cocktails Anyone and Court’s in Session) and many other stakes winners at their Guy Bar Farm during its 45 years of breeding and racing. The Roberts led the Washington Thoroughbred breeder rankings for seven years and stood some of the top stallions in the state, including 1989 leading sire Table Run. Guy and Barbara joined the then WHBA in 1965. Guy served on the WTBOA board of directors from 1974-2006 and was board member emeritus at the time of his passing. He was president of the association in 1979. He also served on the Washington State Horse Racing Commission. The Roberts were inducted into the Washington Racing Hall of Fame in the breeder category in 2005. Guy was also honored with the prestigious S. J. Agnew Special Achievement Award in 2002. Guy was a lifelong member of the Sunnyside First Baptist Church, where he served on the church board of trustees. He also served on the board for Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. Guy and Barbera enjoyed attending the Seattle Seahawks games and were original ticket holders. They were also lifelong supporters of the WSU football team with season tickets. Guy and Barb enjoyed watching all their kids and grandkids in their life’s endeavors, and while Guy savored many riches here on earth, none was greater than his love for his beloved “Shorty” (Barbera) and his family. Guy was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings; his in-laws, Bus and Henrietta Andrus; his daughter, Pam Schoenberg; and his son-in-law, Mike Hopper. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Diana Hopper, Cindy Hoctor (Charlie), Scott Roberts (Linda) and Chad Roberts; grandchildren, Michelle Hopper, Seth Hopper, Christy Schoenberg Perez (Rick), Deken Schoenberg (Holly), Blake Schoenberg, Jodi Morris (Holt), Alex Roberts, Zack Roberts, Calvin Carr and Chloe Carr; great-grandchildren, Cassidy Hopper, Michael Hopper, Colton Duquette, Ethan Smillie ,Emmett Smillie, Blanca Perez, Noah Perez, Elijah Perez, Louie Perez, Eden Perez, Imani Perez, Cali Schoenberg, Pamela Schoenberg, Scarlett Schoenberg, Emery

Morris, Palmer Morris and Clay Morris; and sister-in-law, Delores Roberts.

EQUINE IN MEMORIAM Aunt Sophie Dr. Charles and Barbara Barth lost their homebred champion racemare Aunt Sophie in May 2018. Washington’s top older mare in 2004, the 1998 daughter of Altazarr—Sister Eunice, by Pirateer, was also the leading older distaffer at Emerald Downs that same season in which she won a trio of stakes and placed in three others at the Auburn oval. Also conditioned by the retired veterinarian, Aunt Sophie had a 10-5-7 record during her five years and 35 starts at the track and earned $297,155. In addition to her scores in the Emerald Breeders’ Cup Distaff Handicap, Belle Roberts Stakes and Washington State Legislators Handicap at six, the bay mare won the Paragon Handicap at Emerald Downs at three and the Santa Clara Handicap at Bay Meadows and Alameda County Fillies and Mares Handicap at Pleasanton at five. She was one six winners out of unraced Sister Eunice, who was one of seven foals out of three-race winner Foggy Farah. Foggy Farah was a daughter of 1972 Seafair Queen Stakes winner Falecia, a half-sister to Lilac City Handicap winner Pupcup and $222,521 earner Blue Rim Rock. Aunt Sophie produced five named foals. Only two have started, but include threeyear-old C R Bullitt, a gelding by Atta Boy Roy who won a maiden special weight race at Golden Gate Fields in January for R. E. V. Racing. Aunt Sophie’s final foal is a twoyear-old full sister to that winner. He’s Tops He’s Tops, 25, one of the last sons of the mighty 1977 Triple Crown winner and major sire Seattle Slew, was euthanized in February 2018 due to the infirmities of old age. Bred by Washington Racing Hall of Fame breeder Herman Sarkowsky, He’s Tops suffered from pneumonia as a foal, which resulted in having one of his ribs removed. Unraced at two and three, the dark bay made four starts at four on the Southern California circuit under the care of Richard Mandella and never was out of the money. He’s Tops retired to stud in 1998 at the Woods families’ Woodstead Farm in Chehalis where he would end his days. He’s Tops was a three-quarter brother to Grade 2 winner She’s Tops (who would later produce two-time Grade 1 winner and sire Dixie Union) and half-brother to stakes winner Early Colony and stakes-placed Talented Pirate. Their dam, the winning Mr. Prospector mare She’s a Talent, was a daughter of the stakes-placed Paintbrush. Washington Thoroughbred

Sired by Bold Hour, Paintbrush was one of nine winners, including Grade 1 winner Fall Aspen and Grade 1-placed McCracken, out of the Swaps mare Change Water, who in turn was a daughter of four-time stakes producer Portage. (Among Portage’s stakeswinning sons was fellow Washington sire Pack Trip.) 1994 broodmare of the year Fall Aspen would produce eight (seven graded or group) stakes winners, including Grade/Group 1 winners Northern Aspen, Timber Country, who won the Preakness Stakes, and Fort Wood, who would become a leading sire in South Africa. Among He’s Tops’ 15 stakes winners is a trio of Washington horses of the year: Reba Is Tops, his top earner at $464,257 and who holds four other champion titles; $303,837 earner E Z Kitty, who had three other yearend championships; and 2005 Longacres Mile (G3) winner No Giveaway. In addition, He’s Tops sired two-time Washington champion and multiple stakes producer Youcan’ttakeme, Oregon champion He’s a Goblin and British Columbia champion Wind Storm. Full siblings No Giveaway and Youcan’ttakeme were bred and raced by Sarkowsky. On July 15, He’s Tops two-year-old daughter Summerland won the Spaghetti Mouse Stakes at Hastings Racecourse by 7 1/2 lengths. He’s Tops sired an additional 16 runners who placed in stakes among his 331 foals of racing age (which includes a trio of 2018 two-year-olds), of which 256 have started (77 percent) and 191 (58 percent) have returned winners. He’s Tops was Washington’s leading juvenile sire in 2008. Through April 16, 2018, his progeny had earned $6,574,908. Peggy Woods fondly remembers He’s Tops as “kind, and easy to get along with.”

Liberty Gold Successful Washington sire Liberty Gold, 24, passed away from natural causes on April 11, 2018, at Keith and Jan Swagerty’s West Coast Training Center in Auburn. Bred in Kentucky by Michael Riordan and Carl Ichan’s Foxfield Thoroughbreds, Liberty Gold was foaled on February 15, 1994, and first went through the sales ring as a weanling when he was purchased by Tim Hyde for $50,000 at that year’s Keeneland November sale. Hyde resold the future stakes winner at the following year’s Keeneland September sale for $130,000 to John Peace. After winning a maiden special weight race at Aqueduct in his only start at two, Liberty Gold would go on to win nine other races in a career spanning seven years. His most important victory came in the Grade 3 Aqueduct Handicap, which he won by 2 1/2 lengths, at age seven, but he also placed in six other stakes, including the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap, Grade 2 Churchill

Downs Handicap and Commonwealth Breeders’ Cup Stakes, and Grade 3 Ben Ali Stakes and Gravesend Handicap. He also equaled the 7 1/2-furlong mark at Churchill Downs. He retired with earnings of $598,963, a 10-5-9 record from 44 starts and an SSI of 7.09. Liberty Gold was one of five winners from six starters out of three-time stakes winner Restless Colony, a daughter of champion and leading sire Pleasant Colony. Restless Colony also produced Davona Dale Stakes (G2) winner Latour, by French Deputy, and stakes-placed Restless Mon, by Maria’s Mon. Liberty Gold was one of over 90 stakes winners sired by Crafty Prospector, a Grade

Canouse, and minor stakes winner Parks Island. His two top earners from his ten stakes winners and six stakes-placed runners are 2011 Washington champion three-year-old male Jebrica, who won eight races and earned $342,253, and 2017 Washington plater of the year Mike Man’s Gold, a

multiple stakes winner whose earnings currently stand at $303,527 after his win at Emerald Downs on July1. Mike Man’s Gold was bred by the Swagertys, who acquired Liberty Gold in early 2009 and also bred stakes winner Keller’s Gold and stakes-placed Charlie’s Gold by the stallion, in addition to Mike

Man’s Gold. All three of those runners were stakes-placed in 2017. Through April 10, 2018, Liberty Gold, whose final small crop were foaled this spring, had sired 183 foals of racing age from his 13 crops, with 140 starters (77 percent) and 93 winners (53 percent), who have won 316 races and earned just over $3-million.

*WTBOA Sales Incentive Program (SIP) Beginning with the 2015 WTBOA Sale, all yearlings and weanlings that go through the sales ring and are made fully eligible will earn a lucrative bonus if they break their maiden at Emerald Downs at age two or three in one of two levels of racing. • $2,500 SIP Owners’ Incentive Bonus if a SIP-eligible horse wins its first race in a maiden special weight, allowance or stakes race. • $1,000 SIP Owners’ Incentive Bonus if a SIP-eligible horse wins its first race in a maiden $25,000 or more claiming race. A two-part process funds the SIP and is required to make the horse fully eligible: (1) Consignors – who must be current WTBOA members in order to consign a horse to the sale – will automatically contribute $50 to make each yearling or weanling in their consignment provisionally eligible for the incentive program. (2) Buyers will then be offered the opportunity to make their purchase fully eligible by paying an additional fee. All buyers who wish to participate in the Sales Incentive Program must be WTBOA members in good standing for the year that the horse will be racing. • For current WTBOA members, the final SIP eligibility fee is $50 per horse. • Non-WTBOA members will pay a $180 fee (includes $50 SIP fee and $130 WTBOA “early bird” membership fee good for the year of purchase through the following calendar year) for the first yearling or weanling, but only a $50 SIP fee for each additional yearling or weanling. (3) Should a SIP-eligible horse change hands prior to breaking its maiden, the new owner must be a current WTBOA member during the year the horse wins an eligible SIP race (either at two or three), payable by opening day of the race year. In a $22,500/$25,000 maiden claiming race, the horse must be entered at the $25,000 level to qualify for the $1,000 bonus.

**WTBOA Homebred Incentive Program (WHIP) Beginning with the 2016 season, a one-time Owner’s Incentive Bonus of $1,000 will be awarded when a horse breaks its maiden at Emerald Downs. Two-year-olds and three-year-olds are eligible for the bonus. • Payment goes to the owner of the horse at the time that the horse breaks it maiden. • The payment is made by the WTBOA within 30 days of the win. • The horse must break its maiden at Emerald Downs. • The horse must be a Washington-bred. • The horse must not have gone through any sale (either sold or RNA). • The horse must break its maiden at the $25,000 level or better. • The owner(s) must be members of the WTBOA by Emerald Downs’ opening day of the year in which the bonus is paid. A horse that is managed by a member will also receive the award. For instance, if a racing partnership or syndicate owns the horse, as long as the person who manages the entity is a member, they will receive the bonus. • The owner of the horse does not have to be the breeder of the horse.
