Law Abidin Citizen in a Longacres Mile Thriller California-based runner wins $200,000 race in blanket finish

I

n one of the most scintillating stretch drives in Longacres Mile history, Law Abidin Citizen nailed Peter Redekop BC Ltd.’s three-to-five favorite Anyportinastorm in the final jumps and scored a head victory in the 84th renewal of the Pacific Northwest’s biggest race on August 11. Kelly Brinkerhoff and Bob Grayson Jr.’s Restrainedvengence finished a neck behind Anyportinastorm in a race dominated by the top three finishers. In fact, it was 6 1/2 lengths back to Solid Wager in fourth place, with Elliott Bay, Oh Marvelous Me, More Power to Him, Curlin Rules, Rocky Tough, Brave Nation and El Huerfano completing the order of finish. Ridden by Abel Cedillo and carrying 119 pounds, Law Abidin Citizen ran the mile distance in 1:34.08 (the 1:32.90 race and track record was set in 2016 by Point Piper) and paid $15.60, $4.80 and $4.20. Mark Glatt is the winning trainer for owners Dan Agnew of Vancouver, Washington, Gerald Schneider of Auburn and John Xitco of Tacoma. The victory is the first graded win on dirt and the second graded win overall for Law Abidin Citizen, who captured the Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes on Santa’s Anita’s hillside turf course last March. A five-yearold Kentucky-bred gelding by Twirling Candy, Law Abidin Citizen is 6-3-4 in 23 starts with earnings of $416,167, including Sunday’s check worth $96,800. Law Abidin Citizen scores a head victory over heavy favorite Anyportinastorm in the 84th running of the historic Longacres Mile. Among those celebrating in the packed winner’s circle were the Mile winner’s owners Dan Agnew, Gerald Schneider and John Xitco, as jockey Abel Cedillo enjoys the moment. Hernandez, did everything but win the race. Breaking from the No. 8 post, Anyportinastorm set fractions of :23.05, :45.58, 1:09.37 and 1:21.46, and dug in gamely when Law Abidin Citizen moved up to challenge. Anyportinastorm and Law Abidin Citizen raced virtually head and head the final sixteenth of a mile, with the latter up in the final strides. Restrainedvengence, a California shipper ridden by Kevin Krigger at 120 pounds, finished strongly to take third and paid $9 to show. For Cedillo, it was his first time riding Law Abidin Citizen in a race, although he was up for the gelding’s sharp half-mile gate work in :47 4/5 last week at Del Mar. “When I worked him last week, I told Mark (Glatt) that the horse was gonna run good,” said Cedillo, the leading rider this year at Golden Gate Fields. “It was a tough race today, but he ran great.” For Glatt, the trip to Emerald Downs was a homecoming. He was raised in Auburn and his father was a top trainer at Longacres. “We were actually talking about this race last year,” said Glatt. “(Law Abidin

Citizen) has been more of a turf horse, but he transferred well to dirt today.” Glatt, Agnew, Schneider and Xitco capped a glorious weekend that also netted them the previous day’s $200,000 Best Pal Stakes (G2) for two-year-olds with Collusion Illusion ($17) at Del Mar. Collusion Illusion is also a son of Twirling Candy. It’s the second Mile victory for Schneider, who won with Chum Salmon in 1985, and Agnew’s father, S. J. Agnew, won the 1971 Mile with Pitch Out. “This is a dream come true,” said Dan Agnew. Due to audio problems, Joe Withee, Emerald’s director of broadcast publicity, was pressed into race-calling duties at the last moment and announced the Longacres Mile from track side in place of regular announcer Tom Harris. ESPN personality Kenny Mayne served as honorary steward for the 2019 Mile. No Talking Back (Emerald Distaff Handicap), My Grandpa (Muckleshoot Derby) and Killarney Lass (Washington Oaks) took the other three stakes on the Championship Sunday card. F3

On the human side, Lucarelli shattered the single-season record with 81 wins and rolled to his sixth training title. The 62-yearold conditioner – whose season highlights also included a record-tying five-win day and becoming the first trainer in track history to win 1,000 races – also received honors for top training achievement. Wales rode 99 winners, scoring a runaway victory in the jockeys’ standings, and was voted top riding achievement for his seasonlong dominance atop the standings. John and Janene Maryanski and Gerry and Gail Schneider’s Riverbend Farms’ Baja Sur rolled to dominant victories in the Auburn and Coca-Cola stakes to earn honors as top three-year-old colt or gelding. Washington-bred Baja Sur also was top twoyear-old colt or gelding at the 2018 meet. Alittlelesstalk, owned by Warlock Stables, Kelly Dougan and Stephanie Loffredo’s Ya Killing Me LLC, was top three-yearold filly. Washington-bred Alittlelesstalk prevailed in the Kent and Washington Cup Sophomore Filly stakes and also ran second against colts in the Muckleshoot Derby. Race Home went from unraced to top two-year-old colt or gelding in two weeks. A Kentucky-bred owned by Tim Bankers, Race Home exploded through the lane to capture the $100,000 Gottstein Futurity and finish the season two for two. Jean and Jeff Harris’s Clemans View Racing and Michelle Beaunaux homebred Windy Point was stakes placed three times, including a victory in the Washington Cup Juvenile Filly Stakes, and was voted top two-year-old filly. The 84th renewal of the $200,000 Longacres Mile, featuring a driving threeway finish between Law Abidin Citizen, Anyportinastorm and Restrainedvengence, was voted race of the meeting. Brahms Forest, who began the season with a victory in a $4,000 claiming race, posted a 5-2-0 record in eight starts and was voted top claimer. Trained by Lucarelli, the five-year-old California-bred gelding is owned by Two Putts for the Win #4, David Lechmanik and Alliance Stable. To be eligible for a year-end award, a horse must have raced at least twice during the 2019 season. Washington Thoroughbred

One Horse Will Do Corporation and Steve Shimizu’s No Talking Back parlayed three stakes wins into being named the top older filly or mare and best Washington-bred of 67-day meet. WHBPA/WTBOA Horsemen Helping Horsemen and Equal Pay Distance Series The second WHBPA/WTBOA Horsemen Helping Horsemen Distance Series was expanded in 2019 with the addition of the Equal Pay Distance Series for older fillies and mares. The first leg of the distaff series, which was valued at $17,325, was run on August 9, when eight fillies and mares ran in the nine-furlong race for a $5,000 claiming tag. One Horse Will Do Corporation and trainer Chris Stenslie’s Peach of a Pie, ridden by Kevin Orozco, rallied from last to take the race by a head over Sherry Plenty hawk and Ryan Fitzpatrick’s Choteau. Lucarelli Racing Corporation and Humberto Huerta’s Constant Craving was third. It was the second win in nine starts for Peach of a Pie, a three-year-old Kentuckybred daughter of New Year’s Day, who crossed the finish line in 1:53.27. Four runners were claimed out of the race, two each by trainers Joe Toye (Constant Craving and Tomorrow’s Mine) and Jeff Metz (Choteau and Staracrossthewater). On August 10, the nine-furlong first leg Fall 2019

in the 2019 marathon for older colts and geldings, also running for a $5,000 price, was split into two $13,692 divisions. The first was taken by Rancho Viejo and Jerry Carmody’s 2018 Washington plater of the year Party for One. The six-year-old gelding by Desert Party—And One for Me, by Dayjur, went gate-to-wire under Lorenzo Lopez’s guidance to win by three-quarters of a length over Glyn C. Kelly and Anne MacLennan’s Cook Up a Storm. John E. Parker’s Awesome Return was third. Final race time was 1:51.09. Five runners were claimed out of the field of eight: the top three finishers, fifth place Pass Due Payment and race favorite Elwood J, who ran seventh. Toye claimed Pass Due Payment. Trainers Charles Essex (Cook Up a Storm and Elwood J), Robert Meeking (Awesome Return) and Candice Cryderman (Party for One) also put in successful claims. The second division of the male version of the marathon also drew eight combatants. Hern/LePley Racing’s Freddies Dream pulled away to score a nearly nine-length win over Blaine Wright Racing Stable LLC’s Oldtimers Vision. Manuel Ortiz Sr.’s Deputy’s Command finished third. In the quickest of the trio of marathon races, Freddies Dream’s final time was 1:49.84. Freddies Dream, who was piloted by Kevin Krigger, is an eight-year-old California-bred gelding by Good Journey. Three runners emerged with new owners from this division. Winner Freddies Dream was claimed by Metz, while Frank Lucarelli took home Oldtimers Vision and Gregory A. Moore red-tagged fourth place finisher Thorn Legacy.

2019 leading owner Chad Christensen’s Constant Craving took the final leg of the Equal Pay Distance Series for older fillies and mares. Round Two The second leg of the Equal Pay Distance Series for older fillies and mares, a 12-furlong race for $8,000 claimers with a $18,420 purse run on August 30, was won by Greg Conley, Chuck Conley and trainer Joe Toye’s Terra Firma Farm’s Tomorrow’s Mine. Bred in Washington by Bar C Racing Stables, the four-year-old daughter of Harbor the Gold—Kirkela, by Giant’s Causeway, who was ridden by Gary Wales, defeated Alan Bozell, David Rall and William J. Craig’s Indian Power by 1 3/4 lengths.

In what would be his 100th start, ten-year-old Deputy’s Command swept the final leg of WHBPA/WTBOA Horsemen Helping Horsemen Distance Series by three lengths.

Saratoga West’s Choteau – who was one of three distaffers claimed – finished third in the field of seven. Also claimed was Constant Craving, by Lucarelli for Chad Christensen, and Jorge Rosales haltered Staracrossthewater for Marjorie Avery, Peach of a Pie, winner of the first leg of the distaff series, was scratched earlier in the day due to an injury. West Seattle Boy’s 21-win record when he scored a four-length tally in a $25,000 claiming race at the Auburn oval for owners Greg Conley, Chuck Conley and trainer Joe Toye’s Terra Firma Farm. He has 15 sprint and seven route wins to his credit, all at Emerald Downs. A multiple stakes winner in his youth, Mike Man’s Gold, a son of Liberty Gold out of 2017 Washington broodmare of the year Chedoodle, by Slewdledo, was bred by Keith and Jan Swagerty. The Auburn couple was also on hand for the celebration. The oft-claimed runner (four times this season alone), through the end of the meet, had made 53 starts with a 22-5-6 record at Emerald Downs. Overall, the talented and resilient runner has made 65 starts with the addition of one more second place run and two more thirds to give him earnings of $347,833 (47th place among all Washingtonbred earners). “I felt a little pressure riding him today,” said winning rider Gary Wales, the meet’s leading rider with 99 wins. “I didn’t want to disappoint Joe, Greg and Chuck, but once I slipped him outside, the rest was history.” “We enjoy him and we love him,” said Greg Conley. “Everyone at the track loves him.” Toye added, “We are lucky to have Mike Man’s Gold, and thank you to the Swagertys for raising such a valiant horse.”

at 1 1/4 miles, was once again split into two $14,000 races, run on August 31, with Party for One winning his second distance race and Oldtimers Vision scoring in the other division. Racing for John Parker and trainer Candice Cryderman and ridden by Lorenzo Lopez, Party for One scored a half-length win over Henry Leong and Sharon Hart’s Tiz Brilliant with Valentin Garcia’s Uzta Have Money running third in the field of five. Two horses were claimed out of the race for $8,000 with Party for One going back to Toye’s barn for owners Conley, Conley and Terra Firma Farm and fourth place runner Cook Up a Storm being haltered by trainer Vince Gibson for Gary and Deborah Lusk. Oldtimers Vision, an eight-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding by Pollard’s Vision, won the second division by a neck for owner Dean Mazzuca, trainer Lucarelli and jockey Javier Matias. Finishing second in the field of six was James Peter Moore’s Thorn Legacy with Alan Bozell and Rolando Veliz’s Stay in Power in the show spot. The sole claim in Oldtimers Vision’s race was by Debbie Peery, who haltered Awesome Return for Little Barn Racing. Distance Finales at Emerald Downs The final divisions of distance series were held on the September 21 card. A group of five distaffers – all carrying 120 pounds – set off in the 12-furlong starter allowance, which featured a $22,400 purse. Third betting choice Constant Craving swept the field by three lengths, earning the $12,320 winner’s share for owner Chad Christensen and trainer Lucarelli. It marked the fourth win for the five-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Drosselmeyer. She was ridden to the 2:33.60 win by Javier Matias. Nine runners went postward for the $26,440 starter allowance in the last race of the 2019 distance series. Second leg winner Oldtimers Vision went off as the favorite, but the race was won with authority by $11.70-to-one shot Deputy’s Command, who rallied from nearly 20 lengths back in what would be his 100th start. The tenyear-old British Columbia-bred gelding races for trainer Manuel Ortiz Sr. and was ridden to his three-length triumph by Wales. It was the 17th win for the son of Second in Command and pushed his earnings to over the $200,000 mark. Deputy’s Command had run third and fourth in the first two

Downs card and in doing so set a new single-season track mark for wins at the Auburn oval. His 67th win came with Randall and Rossi LLC and Lucarelli Racing Corporation’s Gentle Prince in race five. The five straight wins were also a record for an individual race card and tied the track and state record for most wins by a trainer in a day. The Enumclaw-based trainer unfortunately wasn’t on hand to celebrate his accomplishments as he had journeyed to Hastings Racecourse to saddle Killarney Lass in the British Columbia Oaks (the Washington Oaks winner finished eighth). Earlier in the meet Lucarelli became the first trainer to score 1,000 wins at Emerald Downs and he clinched his sixth Emerald training title with a record 81 wins. Contributing mightily to those wins was owner Chad Christensen, who on September 13, with Pure Pursuit and Diction’s victories, entered the record books for single-season wins (28) by an owner at Emerald Downs. The previous mark of 27 was set by Swag Stables in 2009. A newcomer to the sport, Christensen claimed his first horse toward the end of the 2018 season and broke the record in his first full season at Emerald Downs. Christensen ended the season with 32 wins. “Chad came to me last year and said he wanted to get involved, and we’ve had a blast,” said Lucarelli.

He made his first starts at Golden Gate Fields while in Wright’s care where he won two races. After finishing second in the Auburn Stakes when sent north to Emerald Downs, Disruption was then turned over to trainer Monique Snowden. While running in her care, Disruption won three races at the Auburn track and finished third in the 2014 Mt. Rainier Handicap behind two-time Longacres Mile (G3) winner Stryker Phd. Disruption’s final race came on September 26, 2015. A lifelong horseman, Snowden was a great believer in a strong fundamental education for each horse and highly believed in preventative care. She was known for

spending a lot of time with each one of her charges, both astride and on the ground. The young horsewoman was respected for the care, dedication and love she gave each of her horses, which made her suicide in July 2016, after one young runner’s untimely death on the track, even harder to bear. She was only 37. Merwick nominated Bruce to honor Snowden. Nelson had contacted Merwick to find a home for Disruption when he was retired from racing. At the time Nelson was unaware that among Second Chance Ranch retirement facility’s programs was “‘Leading With Horses,’ an innovative platform for mental health professionals to utilize while engaging with clients, which offers an equine-assisted mental health therapy program focused on suicide prevention and anti-bullying.” According to Merwick, “Bruce has helped with this program, as well as the equine art program, which encourages children to express themselves creatively.” The talented multi-tasking Bruce “also spent three semesters as part of the Washington State University Equestrian Team, where he taught beginners to ride.” Merwick went on note “Bruce is a product of Monique Snowden’s superb equestrian skill. She adored this horse. All of the horses she trained and whose lives she touched were shown respect and fair leadership. They, in turn, gave their best for her. Bruce learned empathy, compassion and a desire to connect with people because of Monique. She was deeply emotional, and horses relate to that – it’s why they are so successful as ‘therapists.’ The greatest way to honor Monique is to have her beloved horse help others coping with depression and

He was trained by Chris Stenslie. For the first win of his career, Kactus Relevation was also coowned by Jody Peetz’s One Horse Will Do Corporation. The runner didn’t break his maiden until his four-year-old season when he went gate-to-wire to take a $5,000 maiden claiming race at a mile. Both of his other wins also came at eight furlongs for $4,000 and $2,500 tags. His final race came on September 9, 2011. Among Kactus

T

he Washington Thoroughbred Foundation, in conjunction with the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association and Emerald Downs, was once again pleased to present the Equine Art Show, which took place July 12-14 on the track level at Emerald Downs. The purpose of the show is to encourage equine artists and to support the arts, in general, as an integral part of all horserelated sports. The annual art show has garnered recognition since its inception in 1980 at the WTBOA Pavilion at Longacres. In 2019, it celebrated its 20th year of continued growth and success at Emerald Downs with artwork received from artists from across the US. F10

The show, judged by a respected panel of Northwest artists and/or other knowledgeable professionals, is open to all ages, including children, pre-teens and intermediates. It offers over $7,000 in prize money, $750 of which is dedicated to youth categories. The coveted Best in Show Award, sponsored by former Emerald Downs’ President Ron Crockett and his wife Wanda and named in memory of Ron’s mother Angie, was awarded to Christine Grimes for her stunning oil entitled “Areion.” The Bud and Pat Hallowell Memorial Publication Award, featured on the cover of this magazine, went to Rosalie Thun for her watercolor, “Night Racing.” “Serenity,” a striking clay sculpture by

Karen Leback, was selected as the Equine Art Purse Trophy Purchase Award and will have the distinction of being presented to the winning owners of next year’s Equine Art Purse. The art show is presented under the auspices of the Washington Thoroughbred Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and as such, all sponsorships and/or other donations made to the art show are tax-deductible. All exhibited artwork is offered for sale and a portion of the proceeds supports the many beneficent programs that are funded by the Washington Thoroughbred Foundation. Meet the Equine Art Show Judges Jill Heerensperger has held a lifelong passion for horses, which began with riding in her youth. A f t e r m a r r y i n g t h e l a t e D av i d Heerensperger in 1974, the couple raced such horses as Toyota Bluegrass Stakes (G1) winner Millennium Wind and fellow graded winners Artiste Royal (Ire), Winning Prize (Arg), Hawksley Hill (Ire), Bourbon Bay, Fire With Fire, Jokerman, Indyanne and Slew of Damascus. Their first stakes winner, Dave’s Reality, was named Longacres top juvenile male of 1982 after winning a trio of stakes. Jill and David owned and bred Washington-breds and were ranked among the top 50 Washington breeders and owners on several occasions. Flying With Eagles, a $330,739 stakes winner raced by the couple, sired the Heerenspergers’ homebred stakes winner Stealth Attack. Jill was instrumental in selecting Flying With Eagles as a yearling from a WTBOA sale. According to longtime friend and bloodstock agent Claudia A. Canouse, “Jill has an extraordinary eye for a beautiful equine athlete and has always enjoyed being very closely involved with their day-to-day development.” She went on to say, “Her eye for composition, color and dimensions was enhanced greatly by her being the display person for [the Heerenspergers’] Eagle Hardware chain, as well as decorating her own home and yacht. Many fine paintings from the Equine Art Show found their way to the walls of the Heerenspergers’ homes and offices over the years and some even sailed the Mediterranean.” Jill was active in the WTBOA as a board member and served as a chairman of the successful Washington Thoroughbred F o u n d a t i o n T H RU S T s c h o l a r s h i p fundraising auctions for several years, as well as helping with the popular fashion F12

shows at Longacres, which also raised funding for students. She was among the original investors in Northwest Racing Associates LPC, which built Emerald Downs, and also contributed funds to help build the WTBOA offices and sales pavilion at Emerald Downs. She continues to be active in the Thoroughbred industry with one or two horses running at Emerald Downs. Theresa Hodge and husband Jack have been breeding Thoroughbreds at their Oak Crest Farm in Enumclaw since the early 1980s. Listed among the state’s leading breeders for many of those years, the Hodges have bred two Washington horses of the year – Peterhof’s Patea and Guinevere, the latter who they also raced – and additional state champions in Colonel Stevens and Finally Free. They also bred and raced Grade 1 winner Sutra. Among their most recent winners are Emerald Downs stakes winners Guinevere’s Finale and Karula. Theresa attended the Seattle-based Cornish College of the Arts where she graduated with a degree in fine arts. She also served on the board of the Seattle Children’s Home. The Hodges are avid art collectors. Some of their favorites include Salvador Dali prints, David Lee originals, R. C. Gorman sculpture, Leroy Neiman, George Carlson, Debra Butterfield and Dale Chihuly. Elaine C. Lynest, BFA from Mount Mercy University, Cedar Rapids Iowa. City of Enumclaw Arts Commissioner for over ten years. Past chairman of Arts Alive! Center for the Arts, current board member and Arts Alive! Gallery manager. Instructor at Green River College, Enumclaw branch, in watercolor, pastel and drawing.
