There are two or three plenary sessions each day, which are used for short writing tasks or formal instruction on aspects of writing, as needed. Writing specialists are on hand for individual consultations. While most of the retreats take place on campus, and are catered day-time events, some of the retreats may take place online on MS Teams.

This workshop has two components.

PART 1 (3 hours) comprises formal training on research ethics, with a particular emphasis on social science research. This training is content based. There is a formal written assignment following this workshop. Successful completion of this assignment will allow participants to receive a Certificate of Competence in Research Ethics.

PART 2 (1 hour) describes how to apply for ethics clearance to the University Research Ethics Committee (Non-Medical) or to school ethics committees. This workshop aims to provide opportunities for enhancing postgraduates’ academic writing through substantiation of their points of view and argument, while maintaining academic integrity and referencing rigour. The workshop provides information about the justification of the students’ point of view in academic writing and illustrates the level of accuracy which is necessary in referencing for research writing. The APA is used as an example, but students who use other styles of referencing, e.g. Harvard, Law style, Vancouver, etc. will also benefit from the discussions in this workshop. As a critical reader you do far more than just remember the ideas an author shared in his/her paper. You should be able to understand the author’s main idea about, or position on, a topic, see their opinions, and analyse the author’s choices of major and minor supporting details as evidence to back up his/her position. A critical reader can see how ideas fit together and flow to support to build up to the point or argument the author is presenting, and assess whether the argument presented is valid. Regardless of whether you are reading an academic article or a news clip, critical reading empowers you to come to your own conclusions on what the author has written. This workshop will guide you, the reader, on how to recognise an author’s position or opinion and their supporting evidence and to critically evaluate what you read. At the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify an author’s position/opinion/argument;

- Find the evidence used to support the position/opinion/argument;

- Evaluate the strength of this evidence, and

- Evaluate the credibility of the sources you may find for your own writing.

28-30 October Full day In person/tea ms Dr Pia Lamberti The retreats are three-day events focused on achieving specific research writing goals set before the start of the retreat. The target group is students from CLM in full research Master’s and doctoral programmes. Participants work on a chapter of their dissertation or thesis, an article for publication, or the research proposal. There are two or three plenary sessions each day, which are used for short writing tasks or formal instruction on aspects of writing, as needed. Writing specialists are on hand for individual consultations. While most

of the retreats take place on campus, and are catered day-time events, some of the retreats may take place online on MS Teams. Invitations to apply for a place at the retreats are sent out via email to Wits student email addresses four to seven weeks before each retreat. email Dr Pia Lamberti (pia.lamberti@wits.ac.za) if you are a CLM postgraduate research student who has not received email invitations to the retreats.
