WELCOME

It is very good to welcome you all here today to see the sixth running of the McCreery Military Amateur Riders’ Hurdle and a very big thank you to Wincanton and to Jockey Club Racecourses for so generously hosting us

Racing is a long established and important part of military life At one time, military races were a common feature on cards across the British Isles, and especially where British forces were serving overseas Post the Second World War, with the services extensively committed, and with costs rising, we witnessed a gradual reduction in opportunities for servicemen and women to ride Under Rules.

Sandown Park generously continue to host The Grand Military meeting, now at the end of January, and The Royal Artillery meeting in February. Plumpton have now also most generously started to host a military race for us in November These are all tremendous days out, which I very much hope you will attend if you do not already do so, but we felt that, given the amount of effort that military riders put in to preparing, and the generosity of owners and trainers in finding horses, we needed to offer a bit more

We also felt that it would be good to have something in the West Country, where so many of our Royal Naval, Army and Royal Air Force units are stationed, and where there is such a strong sporting tradition. Wincanton was a natural choice and we are much indebted to David Wiggin, (who himself was a distinguished third generation Cherrypicker: he served in The Royal Hussars (PWO) while his father and grandfather served in the 11th Hussars (PAO)) and his Board for all their support With the Armed Forces as busy as ever it still takes real commitment and determination for our jockeys to get themselves racing fit and to find time to ride out and school, something that is becoming even more demanding given the current international situation. That means that it is a real pleasure to see our military riders here today and we can promise you a tough and exciting race.

Theraceisnamedafteroneofthegreatmilitaryjockeys, andgreatsoldiers,General Sir Dick McCreery, a stalwart supporter of both Wincanton and The Blackmore Valeandwhosefamilyhavelonghadsuchstrongconnectionshere Itisaparticular pleasure to welcome Jeanette McCreery here today to present his trophy. We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to John and Doone Chatfeild-Roberts and their family for so very generously sponsoring us now for the sixth time.

Is military racing still relevant today when horses are no longer part of the Army’s order of battle? It most certainly is Any sport that encourages fitness, rigid training, determination, a cool head and nerves of steel is as valuable to service men and women today as it’s ever been.

I very much hope you enjoy sharing some of that experience with us today.

MEET THE JOCKEYS

Some of the riders in today’s McCreery Military Forces Amateur Jockeys Handicap Hurdle

Lt. Billy Aprahamiam Irish Guards

This is Billy’s comeback season after initially handing in his licence back in 2020, in order to leave the Army and take up role as assistant trainer to champion trainer Nicky Henderson. Billy was assistant trainer at Seven Barrows for three years before taking the plunge and taking out a license to train in his own name. The yard which is located near to where Billy grew up in Adstone is going from strength to strength, where he applies everything he learnt in his military career with what he learnt as a rider and assistant trainer

With a military career spanning over four years, Billy balanced a busy work schedule with representing the Army in Polo, Racing and on the weekends Point to Points. His first winner was in 2015 when partnering Endofdiscussion in a maiden at Thorpe Lodge for Edgecote trainer Pauline Harkin. He then had to wait 2 years for his first success under rules when winning this race in 2017 for Brian Barr on Mighty Missile.

Lt. Izzy Harrison

The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery

This is Izzy’s first season with a Cat A amateur’s license which she obtained when successfully completing the Amateur Riders Course at The Northern Racing College in February 24 When work commitments allow, Izzy is often found riding out for Wiltshire based trainer Seamus Mullins, who has a steep history in bringing on new military amateurs such as Kevin Jones (Ex NH Jockey), Col Erica Bridge, and Sgt Nathan Rahman (Point to Point and Fegentri Jockey).

As you would expect from a serving member of The King’s Troop, Izzy has a background in horses ranging from eventing to modern pentathlon, and prior to joining the military, worked full time for several top names in the eventing world

Her aspirations for this season is to be successful in completing a race, with next year’s aim to represent The King’s Troop in one of the big military races at Sandown Park Racecourse.

Col Domenico d’Alo Italian Army (Signals)

Currently based in at the Italian Army Training and Doctrine Command in Turin, Domenico has served with the Italian Army for 27 years.

Domenico is one of the most experienced amateur riders and a regular name featured in flat racing in Europe. He is the only military rider to ride out his claim.

On his first ride in Britain in 2017, he was successful when partnering Silverhow for Nicky Henderson, to win the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Memorial Amateur Riders’ Handicap Hurdle at Sandown Park.

He rides regularly at San Siro in Milan, considered to be the Ascot of Italian flat racing, and where Domenico has several horses in training. A background in competitive show jumping and eventing places him well as an experienced all round horseman.

PLAY SMARTER

The Paul Nicholls/Jody Sole combination have captured this twice in the past three seasons and they look the wayto go again with recent Plumpton scorer PADDYDE POLE who rates the pick of these weights under a 7lb penalty Wavering Down has a good record fresh so rates the chief threat on his return, although in-form duo Sylvies Dance and Jubilee Gold also merit plenty of respect.

FORTUNATE GEORGE

Meet

The Emma Lavelle-trained, Oscar gelding was purchased as a four-year-old by The George Inn Syndicate, and after winning on his debut bumper here at Wincanton in 2014 under the legendary Aidan Coleman, over the next six years he went on to win them £85k in prize money, with a further four wins over hurdles, one over fences and numerous placings. Wincanton was his favourite track and the scene of some of finest moments in racing, so it is fitting he comes back here to fly the flag for retrained exracehorses enjoying a new life and second career

We have taken his retraining slowly, with an emphasis on finding out what he enjoys

‘George’ has turned his hoof to dressage, show jumping and cross-country, and might be going eventing this year

George also loves going to the pub - no surprise as he was named after one and was once owned by a landlord.

His racing owners have kept in touch and follow him through frequent visits and the George WhatsApp group They come to watch him train and compete, but the highlight has to be the summer pub rides, when we all gather for a drink and share George stories. They have been there for us during the highs and lows - the retraining journey is a stayers’ race, not a sprint! - and the horse continues to give them a lot of fun and pleasure.

IRISH HILL: Following its run on 16/3/2024 it was reported that the horse suffered interference in running.

SABRINA: Following its run on 27/3/2024 it was reported that the horse would prefer a quicker surface.

ProbableS.P’s: 10-3 Irish Hill (GER), 9-2 Ike Sport (FR), 13-2 Magic Seven (IRE), 7-1 Lutinebella (GB), 10-1 Katate Dori (FR), 14-1 Sabrina (IRE), Weseekherthere (IRE), 18-1 Seigneur des As (FR), ThirtyfourThirty (GB), 22-1 Nickelsonthedime (IRE), 28-1 Getalead (IRE) PLAY

IRISH HILL ran right up to his previous best this term when third in a race that is working out well at Kempton 5 weeks ago and Paul Nicholls’ 6-y-o looks a major player on that evidence from what rates a workable mark. Lutinebella, back from an absence, is of interest also along with Ike Sport who lines up in search of the hat-trick himself back from a break. Magic Seven is another who likely remains capable of better, too.
