Newbury Racecard - Saturday 20th April

Page 1

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the second day of the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials weekend and the Craft Beer Festival.

The highlights of today’s excellent card include the Group 3 Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes for three-year-old colts and geldings, and the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Stakes for three-year-old fillies. The former has been won by some exceptional racehorses over the years including Frankel, Olympic Glory and Kingman. With an array of equine talent on display today, it would be no surprise if we see more future superstars grab the limelight at Newbury this afternoon.

2024 marks the 29th year of Newbury’s partnership with Dubai Duty Free. During that time, Dubai Duty Free has enjoyed considerable success as a business and we are hugely grateful for their ongoing support of racing here. We are delighted to welcome Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Colm McLoughlin and members of the Dubai Duty Free team back to Newbury for an enjoyable weekend with us. Additionally, our thanks go to Watership Down Stud, OLBG and Darley

We are also thrilled to welcome the Craft Beer Festival back again this year, featuring over 30 real ale and ciders from local brewers. Visit the craft beer tent and get the taste buds flowing while enjoying live acoustic music throughout the afternoon. Our partner Renegade Brewery has their pop-up bar situated near the entrance of the craft beer tent if you want to enjoy some favourites such as Good Old Boy and Renegade Lager.

The Dubai Duty Free Marquee is also well worth a visit with complimentary Arabic coffee and dates on offer, while the wheel of fortune is back with many prizes up for grabs including entry into the Millennium Millionaire and Finest Surprise draws!

After racing The Shadow Monkeys take to the stage next to the beer tent for some good old fashion sing-a-longs and a country-style after party.

We are thrilled to have recently announced this summer’s Party in the Paddock acts. Super-producer and DJ Sigala will be headlining Weatherbys Super Sprint Day on Saturday 20th July and one of the most successful British rappers of all time, Dizzee Rascal, will be joining us at BetVictor Hungerford Day on Saturday 17th August. Tickets are on general sale now – at discounted rates – but these cheaper tickets won’t be around for long. A range of hospitality packages are also available for both racedays.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our racegoers for joining us today and we see you again for the Starlight Charity Raceday on Friday 17th May and the Al Shaqab Lockinge with Ladies Day on Saturday 18th May.

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

A Global Icon in

Whether it is on the golfing greens, the tennis courts, the racecourse or even the high-seas, sponsorship and the support of international events has been an integral part of Dubai Duty Free’s marketing strategy since 1983. And more than just marketing the company itself, these sporting endeavors have also helped to propel global perception of the emirate.

The 2024 sporting ‘season’ began in January with the Hero Dubai Desert Classic which was won by Northern Irish player Rory McIlroy for the fourth time. As a patron sponsor of the tournament, Dubai Duty Free took part in the Pro-AM competition and entertained a number of guests in style at the Emirates Golf Club

The recently concluded Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free, went fantastically well

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the 31st anniversary of the Championships which took place from 18th February –2nd March was won by Jasmine Paolini and Ugo Humbert, who both claimed their maiden Dubai titles.

Much awareness is also created by the operation’s involvement in horse racing and Dubai Duty Free regularly flies the flag in the UK at Newbury Racecourse for the start of the flat race season with the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend on 19th - 20th April.

Since taking over the title sponsorship of this major European race, Dubai Duty Free has created a weekend Festival of racing and social activities which include the Dubai Duty Free Golf Classic which is held at the K Club in Kildare.

Meanwhile the world’s premier international jockeys’challenge, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, is to be held at Ascot on 10th August and will bring together top riders, male and female, from the world’s top racing nations representing Great Britain & Ireland, Rest of the World, Europe and The Ladies team.

TIMEFORM VIEW Listed winner for Aidan O’Brien last season, when also fourth in the Irish Derby. Made a successful debut hurdling for this yard at Sandown in February but held when taking a late fall in the Adonis Juvenile Hurdle (9/1) at Kempton (16f, soft) last time. More needed back on the Flat.

TIMEFORM VIEW Relatively lightly raced since making a winning debut at 2 yrs, producing his best effort when runner-up in a Doncaster handicap in September, Not ideally placed at Kempton next time but probably needs to step forward again to make serious impact here having been gelded over the winter.

Race Summary: The first double-figure field since 2010 in this Group 3, with the eight-year-old HAMISH fancied to make it 5 wins in a row. William Haggas’ gelding has conditions to suit and is a particularly reliable type, so sets a good benchmark for last season’s St Leger second Arrest to aim at. Al Qareem was just behind the selection in the St Simon Stakes when last seen and is another leading player.

Race Summary: REGAL JUBILEE improved in big chunks on both outings since her debut last season and she’s very much the sort to go on improving this term, so she takes marginal preference over the likeable Relief Rally, who sets the standard on what’s been achieved to this point. Race Summary: William Haggas’ GODWINSON looks to have got in lightly for his first venture into handicaps so this lightly raced Saxon Warrior colt gets the vote. Lattam shaped with promise on his first run for Julie Camacho when runner-up in the Lincoln and heads the list of dangers, although a good case can also be made for Navagio, Thunder Ball and Noble Order in a cracking Spring Cup. 1-2-3: 1.GODWINSON 2.LATTAM (IRE) 3.NAVAGIO (IRE)

Race Summary: The unexposed CRACKSKING deservedly opened his account at Newcastle in October and, with the promise of better to come, he could be the answer to this competitive handicap. Graham also signed off last season on a winning note and he doesn’t look badly treated up 3lb, while Baltimore Boy could be a threat with his encouraging reappearance fifth at Kempton under his belt. Entrancement is also worthy of consideration.
