The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2024

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2024 season.

Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.

As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.

I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2024 season, the very best of luck.

THE YEAR WE SAID GOODBYE TO FRANKIE…OR NOT?

CAN CITY OF TROY CONQUER ALL IN 2024?

As another new season begins at Newmarket today with day one of the bet365 Craven Meeting, it is an appropriate moment to reflect on the amazing year that was 2023 on the Rowley Mile and July Course.

Although it did not ultimately prove to be correct, when 2023 began it was expected to be Frankie Dettori’s final year in the saddle.

Now based in the USA, where he recently rode a six-timer at Santa Anita Park, if 2023 does in fact prove to be the last time Frankie ever rode at Newmarket then he could not have signed off in better fashion.

A fourth QIPCO 2000 Guineas came his way courtesy of Chaldean while he ended the year on the Rowley Mile with a Group One Virgin Bet Sun Chariot Stakes success aboard Inspiral The sole Group One race Frankie never won was the My Pension Expert July Cup, the highlight of The July Festival, and if he does make a return to the UK over the summer, it would be no surprise if he tried to correct that omission

Last year’s July Cup went to Shaquille, who provided one of the great stories of the season Trained in North Yorkshire by Julie Camacho and her husband Steve Brown, the son of Charm Spirit began the year with success in a handicap at the QIPCO Guineas Meeting which was quickly followed by a Listed victory at Newbury Despite missing the break on both occasions, he then progressed to win two Group One races in succession, with the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot preceding his July Cup success

It is now 13 years since the great Frankel’s breathtaking QIPCO 2000 Guineas success One horse being spoken about in similar terms after his two-year-old career is City Of Troy Owned by Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, the son of 2018 US Triple Crown hero Justify was unbeaten in three starts in 2023 - two of which came at Newmarket

After an initial success at the Curragh on July 1st, the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt made the trip to Newmarket a fortnight later when he earned plenty of praise with a six and a half lengths victory in the Group Two bet365 Superlative Stakes

Ridden on all of his starts to date by Ryan Moore, City Of Troy ended 2023 with an all the way success in Britain’s best juvenile contest, the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes on Dubai Future Champions Day on the Rowley Mile. With talk of a Triple Crown attempt in 2024, City Of Troy could be the horse to break the 54-year wait since Nijinsky won the 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger.

Talking of the Classics, this week we could see QIPCO 1000 Guineas contenders Regal Jubilee and Dance Sequence take their chance in today’s Group Three Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes Both fillies were winners at Newmarket last year, with Godolphin’s unbeaten Dance Sequence signing off the year with success in the Group Three Oh So Sharp Stakes while Regal Jubilee scored on Newmarket’s final day of the season in November with victory in the Listed Montrose Stakes

Although City Of Troy is expected to go straight to the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, his Dewhurst Stakes form looks set to be tested this week with some of those who finished in behind him, including third-placed Eben Shaddad, set to line up in the Group Three bet365

Race preview from Weatherbys

This afternoon’s seven-race card gets underway with the six-furlong Weatherbys Global Stallions App Handicap, a 0-100 class 2 contest whichwaswonlastyearbyOrazio

Following a promising return when third in the Listed Cammidge Trophy at Doncaster, Charlie Hills’ grey son of Caravaggiolookstoholdsoundclaims of producing a repeat success. Rated 89 last year, he finished powerfully and defied a 4lbs rise when following up at Ascot. Sent off favourite for the Wokingham as a result, he finished sixthattheRoyalmeeting–offamark of102–andisbackdownto100.

By The Grace should come on plenty on her second run.

Gelded over the winter, the ground looks to be in his favour and the only real concern is that the Lambourn basedtrainerhasyettoreallygetgoing thisseason.Thataside, conditionslook right for the five-year-old to go well again.

Aleezdancer is another who was in action at the Lincoln fixture, with Kevin Ryan’s five-year-old also finishing in thirdposition.Heactuallyfinishedsixth inthisracelastyearbutisnowfully7lbs lower and showed at Doncaster that he could be set for a good campaign. Back down to his last winning mark (93), he enjoys an ease in the ground

so is another who should enjoy the prevailingconditions.

Julie Camacho’s Significantly ended last season on a high, winning the Ayr Gold Cup which was sandwiched between second placings in the Portland at Doncaster and at York in mid-October. On a line through the winner of that race Montassib, who won the aforementioned Cammidge Trophy last month, the six-year-old hasalittletofindwithOrazio.

Four of the past seven winners of this race were aged four – which suggests that up-and-coming horses are worthy of respect – and there are eightrunnersofthatagegroupamong today’s 20-strong field. Among them are the race-fit Al Farabi, Clive Cox’s Havana Grey filly Katey Kontent and the Richard Hannon-trained pairing of WallopandDarkThirty.

Veterans Abate and Summerghand are another pair of previous courseand-distance winners, whilst Wobwobwob was a winner on the Rowley Mile as a juvenile, when successful in a soft-ground nursery over seven furlongs. Adrian Keatley’s six-year-old landed the Ayr Silver Cup last September, under a fine Hollie Doyleride, andheisanotherwitharun underhisbelt, albeithewassomeway behind Aleezdancer when only twelfth of14atDoncaster.

PLAY SMARTER

An ultra-competitive early-season sprint handicap with AL FARABI an interesting contender for Roger Varian. He remains unexposed over 6f and on turf, his classy dam boasting a good record here, and could bethe wayto go from a potentiallyfavourable draw in stall 3. Last year’s winner Orazio is an obvious player after a good comeback at Doncaster. Wobwobwob and Dark Thirty are also high on the shortlist.

PLAY SMARTER

EL CORDOBES has a bit to find on form but he cost a fortune and was pretty impressive at Kempton, so he’s worth taking a chance on with the assurance that his yard will have him well prepared for this. Progressive French colt Narkez is an obvious danger and Gasper de Lemos should make a better 3-y-o, so he’s worthy of consideration.

DANCE SEQUENCE has the scope to make a smart 3-y-o and is already proven at this level/track having won the Oh So Sharp Stakes over C&D in the autumn, so she can cement her placing as one of the favourites forthe 1000 Guineas. Matrika picked up aweak Group 2 atthe Curraghwhen last seen inJuly but she escapes a penalty here and the form of her second in the Albanythe previous week makes her a clear next best. Queen of Zafeen has the advantage of race fitness so may sneak a place.

DECLARED RUNNERS 13 2023: SILVER LADY 3 9 2 William Buick EVENS (Charlie Appleby) 16 ran

Stewards Note:

BRECKENRIDGE: Following its run on 9/10/2023 it was reported that the horse ran green.

Probable S.P’s: 7-2 Bolsena (IRE), 5-1 Aurora’s Beauty (IRE), 15-2 Poetic Dawn (IRE), 8-1 Hillbridge (IRE), 10-1 Hey Big Spender (GB), Miss Justice (GB), 16-1 Lake Teo (IRE), Mallavelly (IRE), 28-1 Blue Akoya (GB), Breckenridge (GB), Taramasalata (IRE), 66-1 Glimpse The Moon (GB), 200-1 Opec (GB)

A chance is taken on newcomer HILLBRIDGE, who makes plenty of paper appeal being by Frankel and out of a listed winner Charlie Appleby won this last year and Aurora’s Beauty, the mount of William Buick from the yard’s pair, appeals as one who should take a step forward from her debut. Miss Justice, Hey Big Spender and Poetic Dawn are other likely types among the debutantes in a contest where the betting should reveal more clues.

2023: LIKE ATIGER 3 9 2 Daniel Muscutt 3-1 (James Ferguson) 9 ran Hood worn first time by No 2. Blinkers worn first time by No 6. Running for the first time since Gelding No 1.

ProbableS.P’s: 9-2 StormyWaves (IRE), 6-1 Kalpana (GB), 7-1 City Burglar (GB), 8-1 Assailant (GB), 17-2 Bust A Move (FR), 9-1 Align The Stars (IRE), 10-1 Go Daddy (IRE), 14-1 Ambiente Amigo (GB), Victory Shout (FR), User Amistoso (FR)

This looks a 3-y-o handicap to note and the market should prove informative with a few but Northern raider BUST A MOVE impressed with the move he made into contention when chasing home another upwardly-mobile sort on his return at Doncaster and could be worth siding with to prove his mark a lenient one. StormyWaves looks sure to be suited bythis increase in trip on return and is feared. Kalpana, and Assailant, equipped with first-time blinkers, are others to note
