Derek Sanborn It’s a bit cliché, but Washtenaw Community College alumnus Derek Sanborn truly is living his dream. That dream? Owning his own business. The Pinckney native, now 36 years old and living in Vienna, Va. just outside Washington, DC, is CEO of PatientStudio, a digital management platform designed to help make it easier and faster to schedule appointments, send out reminders and ease paperwork for the patients and staff of smaller medical care providers. “I’ve always wanted to own my own business,” Sanborn said. “Even as a teen, a friend of mine and I bought three computers and started a software business.” For Sanborn, Washtenaw Community College was the right place at the right time for him to start his college journey. Basics of Natural Beekeeping

Build Your Own Rain Garden

This workshop is for beginners as well as those who have kept bees for some time. The workshop will largely follow the methodology of natural beekeeping. We will cover bee species and anatomy, planting a bee garden, the inner workings of a hive, scouting a location, colony management and swarming, installation and maintenance, biodynamics, herbs and tinctures, beekeeper supplies, methods of harvest, winterizing the hive, solar wax melters, legalities of selling and distributing and the beekeeper’s yearly calendar.

During a good rain or winter melt some homes are hit with thousands of gallons of water that can quickly build momentum and cause flooding and drainage issues, sometimes washing out gardens and flooding basements. What is the solution? The permaculture approach to rain gardens. Get the skills to design and build rain gardens that accept stormwater runoff, recharge your groundwater, provide habitats and food for wildlife (including bees and butterflies), and add a nearly maintenance-free, aesthetically pleasing garden installation to your yard for very little money.

DIY HOME REPAIR

Steve Bredernitz is a licensed builder and building official for the State of Michigan. He currently works as a building inspector for two municipalities while contracting small home improvement projects. Running his own home improvement company for over 20 years gave Bredernitz a wealth of experience and knowledge that he now shares with his students. One of his favorite quotes is from Benjamin Franklin, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Embracing the philosophy that if you involve people in learning, Bredernitz is determined to guide his students down the path of doing their own home improvement projects. “Your home is the largest purchase you will make,” said Bredernitz. “Understanding the components of your home and basic maintenance are important. Knowing how to identify and possibly repair an issue is a great accomplishment, plus it saves you time and money.”
