Angie Fuqua Owner, ABA Insight

— ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN

ABA Insight offers therapy for children, teens and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Aimed at building greater independence and meaningful relationships, its personalized services cover behavior analysis, psychology, social work and speech pathology. Since opening in 2018, ABA Insight has won two distinguishing small business awards and successfully weathered the COVID-19 pandemic, while operating debt-free in five counties across Michigan. Fuqua credits SBDC Counselor Shawn Preissle for strong strategic business consulting. “Shawn is like a therapist,” recalls Fuqua. “She reminds me I’m doing a great job, and mentors me in areas outside of my clinical specialty, such as business finance, budgets, creating a business plan, analyzing the overall growth of my company and growing responsibly. “All of the consultants were so accessible throughout this time, which was amazing because I know they were so busy. Again, I felt that they gave me so much reassurance; I had a team behind me,” says Fuqua.

WCC Alumnus Dives into the Pandemic Hunter Darrow While life has been moving at a slower pace for many over the past year, Hunter Darrow has been racking up monumental achievements at a rapid pace. Not only did Darrow graduate from the Washtenaw Community College nursing program and land a job as a registered nurse in the emergency room at Michigan Medicine’s University Hospital, she also married her husband, Kevin. “It was a very different wedding than we originally planned,” she says. “We were supposed to have a wedding with 250 people in May 2020, but ended up with 20 people on a rainy day in August.” Darrow jokes that if a newly married couple can make it through being locked down together during a pandemic, they can make it through anything. The same, of course, could be said about starting a new career as a nurse during the same time. “I knew what I was getting into,” Darrow says of joining the nursing profession in the midst of COVID-19. “I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.” Darrow graduated in December from the collaborative nursing program between WCC and Eastern Michigan University, which was launched in 2016 to address the growing demand for bachelor’s degree-prepared nurses. Up to 94 credits toward the 120-credit degree can be completed at WCC before transferring to EMU and completing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. But the nursing program wasn’t Darrow’s first time at WCC. The 2012 Ann Arbor Skyline High School graduate had previously completed prerequisites at WCC before enrolling at the University of Michigan, where she a Movement Science session degree with in 2017. +earned These classes offer a coaching the trainer. professional development tool will helpcampus you focus “IThis love Washtenaw,” Darrow says. “The on your goalsisand set and you on road to success.actually atmosphere great all the of the instructors Sessions willhow be scheduled by the trainer. care about students do in their classes.”

TRAINER PROFILE

Harry Arnold

| AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Harry Arnold developed a passion for photography at a very early age. Arnold’s father, a photography teacher, spent time at home developing rolls of film in the basement darkroom, igniting a spark in his son that would continue to grow through childhood. Arnold began tinkering with radio-control cars and helicopters, and a new idea started to take shape in his young mind. “This was my Reese’s aha! moment,” says Arnold. “Just like when someone dropped peanut butter into a vat of chocolate and it was magical, I duct taped a camera to my radio-control helicopter, which completely changed my perspective on photography and film.” Ten years later, Arnold upgraded to modern aerial devices and started his own company, Detroit Drones. A bird’s view is highly engaging, and more people–of all ages–are seeking out drones. “From a business standpoint, my goal is to capture the wonder of an aerial view no matter the subject,” says Arnold. “From a teaching standpoint, I want students to experience a smooth first flight in the hopes of lighting a spark within.”
