The World of St. Regis The story of St. Regis begins at the forefront of New York’s Gilded Age, where an elite group of cultured families rose to form the country’s first aristocracy. The leaders of this new social class were the Astors, America’s first multi-millionaire. Redefining luxury hospitality with destinations such as the Astor House and WaldorfAstoria, none meant more to matriarch Caroline Astor and her son, John Jacob Astor IV, than St. Regis. Personally engineered by John Jacob Astor IV himself, he envisioned a hotel where a new style of luxury and comfort was afforded to gentlemen and their families. The first St. Regis opened in 1904 on 55th Street and Fifth Avenue, the most exclusive section of the city at the time, and was declared “The finest hotel in America” by The New York Times.

Visionary and tenacious, this undisputed grande dame ruled New York high society with an exclusive circle that she personally hand-selected. This illustrious group was known as the ‘400’. Her legendary style is still celebrated today in Afternoon Teas and Midnight Suppers.
Originally commissioned by John Jacob Astor IV in 1906, this mural is beloved by New Yorkers and guests alike. The Old King Cole holds a secret privy to only the bartenders.
The hottest spot in New York, complete with a special 18 by 20-foot ice skating platform, was the scene of New York society with enchanting events like dinner dances and scintillating performances on a special ice skating platform that rolls out from under the orchestra floor.

Declared “The finest hotel in America” by the New York Times, The St. Regis was founded by John Jacob Astor IV. The St. Regis Butler was born to redefine personal service and a revolutionary institution began.
Bloody Mary The legendary cocktail invented by famed barman Fernand Petiot at The St. Regis New York. This was originally called the "Red Snapper".

Landmark of New York The St. Regis is named a New York landmark by the New York Community Trust, and a Bronze Award Plaque mounted on the Fifth Avenue side of the building, which proclaims its historical importance. It was conceived and owned by Colonel John Jacob Astor, whose son Vincent Astor enlarged the original structure in 1925.
