id you know that there is a day for reflecting on your beloved pets who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge? Over forty years ago, National Pet Memorial Day was instituted and is still celebrated annually. It falls on the second Sunday in September – this year it’s on the 11th. The day is an opportunity to not only remember those pets who have left an impact on your heart but to find a distinct way to commemorate their lives. It's also a wonderful time to thank that four-legged bestie who is still faithfully by your side. Having a portrait done of your pet is a wonderful keepsake that keeps its spirit alive. Meredith Reynells, artist and owner of Fuzzy Angel Portraits agreed because a treasured remembrance can aid with the grieving process. “The very first portrait I painted was of my former pet, ten-plus years ago. O July 9, 2022, On Track Agility Club of Maine held the very first AKC Temperament Tests in the State of Maine. The two tests were held at North Star Dog Training School in Somerville and administered by two AKC evaluators. 15 dogs passed each test to earn the AKC ATT Title.

AKC Temperament

Lilac is in desperate need of a foster home!

The ATT is open to all purebred and mixed breed dogs. Dogs must be at least 1-year old to take the ATT test and dogs who do not pass the test may retest when ready. Dogs who pass the ATT twice under two different evaluators may earn the ATT title and list the suffix after the dog’s name. On Track Agility Club of Maine is planning to hold another AKC Temperament Test; watch the Downeast Dog News Calendar of Events for date and time.

The ATT is a non-competitive, pass-fail test that screens for fear, shyness, inability to recover and lack of cooperation. Desired traits are that the dog will be emotionally stable, inquisitive, appropriately social, biddable, and recovers from a startling situation in a reasonable amount of time.

Lilac is a Staffordshire7-year-oldTerrierwho needs to leave shelter life in order to survive! She came in with her male friend, Blue, and their 3 puppies in February after being surrendered to RPC because their owner could not care for them. She is the sweetest girl you could ever ask for. (Blue is also available if you’d like to adopt them both! See adoption pageMonths13.) have passed and they are still at the shelter. Lilac is now showing signs of great stress and her body is showing those signs, too. Still, she remains a happy girl when outside of the shelter, but that all goes away when she returns. Do you have room for Lilac and the time that she will need to regain her strength and normalcy in her life? Here is what she needs….. A quiet home where she can live stress free. A retired couple, a couple with no young children, or a person who wants a lot of love and cuddles would be perfect. Lilac loves to cuddle!Ahome with no other dogs as she will want and need you all to herself. She doesn't do well with other dogs, unfortunately, other than her lifelong companion, Blue. She is not reactive to other dogs on walks, though. She paid no attention to cats when we tested her at the shelter. Ideally a home with a fenced yard so that she can enjoy the outdoors and be safe. She can be timid on walks and need some encouragement. Her foster parents will need to follow our very strict diet plan for her and be willing to be in communication with us during her stay to monitor her progress. And we at the shelter are of course hoping for a foster family who may just fall in love with her and become her forever family. If you feel that could give Lilac the foster home she needs, please email rpccanineadoption@ yahoo.com or call us at 743-8679 and ask for Pat.

Dear Dog News Readers, I don’t know about you, but I am beginning to look forward to fall. As much as I love many things about summer, this year has certainly been challenging to keep the flowers and the garden happy as well as getting the dog outside without overheating. We did upgrade her pool to a larger size. We can’t fill it up because it would use too much water but really all she wants to do is lay in it briefly to cool off. I have purchased some backyard agility equipment online that is waiting for it to be a little cooler. I thought that might be a fun and interesting thing for us to attempt. I will report on that in a future issue. This year we have seen some events come back after having been canceled for the past couple of years. Wienerfest, which is held in Belfast is right around the corner. I hope to see you there! Then an event with dogs of a much larger size, Newfie Fun Days, will be held in Eliot. For those of you with Greyhounds and other Sighthounds you may wish to join this year’s Great Global Greyhound Walk. Keep an eye on both our print and online calendars for these and Hot Dog

The Dog of the Hour, the Prince of Chocolate, and the Mayor of Franklin Park, was born on Sept 9, 2009 to Bella Luna and Buckcherry ‘Buck’ Sundaze. Max was a dog’s dog. He lived in six different cities, on two continents, and left a trail of friendship and happiness in his wake. He lived in Boston, Chicago, Fairfax, Florianopolis, Lages, and of course Rockland, Maine where he settled into his retirement. He fell ill with cancer and passed away three weeks shy of his 13th birthday. We buried him at the quarry property I built for him, overlooking his home on Cedar Street. His last weekend was spent at the lake he loved in Camden, surrounded by friends and family and he took his last breath at the edge of the water. Max will be sorely missed. While his journey was so short, ours will continue. He will travel with me wherever I go.

Q. This is an odd question but what is a normal poop for a dog? My friend and I were discussing the difference between her dog’s poop and mine.

Judith K. Herman, DVM, CVH Animal Wellness Center Augusta, Maine www.mainehomeopahticvet.com by Dr. Judith Herman Ask Vet…theScoop of the Poop The sun is setting before 8pm, which means before you know it, it’ll be fall. Sigh. I love the summer, my garden, the ocean, and the lake, but I really do love wearing sweaters on the cooler days and watching the leaves turn. That being said, let’s not rush it! This month I put out the call for your questions on the Sara Moore Enlightened Horizons Facebook page and they flew in. I’m a psychic for people and pets, which means I do not give medical advice, but if your dog shares any, please talk to your vet. Veterinarians are the medical experts; I’m simply a messenger. Enjoy!

Heather S. has a Pitbull named Jake. “Is he happy with his family? And how old is he?” He is happy, but he tends to observe versus consider himself part of the pack all the time. This is strange because he KNOWS he’s yours, but they’re showing me the cousin from the Brady Bunch who would show up, knew he was loved, but still felt a little bit out of place. For the record, I’m almost fifty and I haven’t thought of that show in decades! When I ask his age, I can’t get a clear answer. He feels like a distinguished gentleman that is older than he appears, but has a timeless elegance about him. Jake’s words, not mine. When that happens to me, I go to asking yes/no questions to get an answer. Is he older than three? Yes. Older than five? Yes. Older than seven? No. Amanda S. wants to know if Harry, who is three, ever sees his brother Roman who passed in 2019. Well I didn’t even finish typing this, and I heard a huge YES!!!! And Harry is super excited that you’re even putting this question out there! It’s like you both realized at this very moment you speak the same secret language. He feels so giddy, and I’m trying to ask more questions, but Harry is all over the place. Ha ha! When I said that he’s surprised you asked a psychic, I “saw” a memory of my mom from when I was in elementary school. She had submitted a question to a handwriting analysis column in our local paper, and her initials were M.E.B. Living in a small town everyone knew it was hers, and she was so embarrassed but also really wanted to know what she got from her penmanship. I’m curious if writing in like this is slightly out of your comfort zone! Getting back to your question, Harry doesn’t mind seeing Roman, but there’s time when he just wants to sleep and Roman just lays there staring at him. Roman is watching over Harry because you asked him to, and he’s taking his job very seriously. Until he gets sleepy and dozes off! I love these questions and the dog’s answers! Katie O. wants to know how Poppy is feeling with her foot issue. She’s a black and tan German Shepherd. What’s interesting is I don’t really feel anything in her feet that hurts her. My back right feels a little different than the rest and a bit tingly, but I think things are moving in the right direction. Put a visualization to what healing looks like for her. Actually, imagine her foot blasting out whatever ails it, and then imagine fairy energy carrying it up to the full moon. I know that sounds crazy, but we’re made of energy and thoughts affect our vibration, so it can help speed up healing!Thank you to all of you who submitted questions about your pups! I am still currently offering phone readings and parties. FMI go to Mooreandwww.enlightenedhorizons.comfollowusonFacebookatSaraEnlightenedHorizons. by Sara Moore www.enlightenedhorizons.com

Rini F. wants to know if Iwa enjoys the sports she does. The short answer is yes; the longer answer is more complicated. She kind of looks at them the way an office worker would look at going to the gym for a workout at the end of the day. They know it’s good for them, they feel better after, but it feels like work while they’re in the midst of it. Iwa feels like they have a bit of a processing delay. They know what you’re asking of them, but they need to hear it, see it, try it, celebrate it, and then move on. They are super proud of their abilities, and they are thrilled when you say it’s time to go.

A. The joke is, if you get a bunch of veterinarians together for dinner, at some point the conversation turns to poop. This is a good question and is important to understand. As dog parents, it is good to know what is normal verses abnormal poop. You can tell a lot about your dog’s health by looking at the feces (poop). First, what is normal? Easy, it is compact, moist, easy to pick up, and feels like Play Doh when squeezed. It also can be segmented. There are many variations on this and changes will mean something different about your dog’s health. There is a scale for dog poop called the Bristol Stool Chart. It is a scale from 1 to 7. Type 1 is separate hard lumps, like nuts, and are hard to pass. Type 2 is sausage shaped but lumpy. Type 3 is like sausage but with cracks in it. Type 4 is like a sausage or a snake which is smooth and soft. Type 5 is soft blobs with clear-cut edges and are easy to pass. Type 6 is fluffy pieces with ragged edges, and it looks mushy. Type 7 is watery without any solid pieces. It is totally liquid.Feces that is hard to pass can cause constipation. This is a condition where your dog is struggling to pass the poop. He can strain and be in pain. If this condition continues, your pup may need an enema. Causes can be dehydration, or your dog ate something that is hard to pass, like too much bone or chew toy. There may be an underlying cause for the dehydration other than just not drinking enough on a hot day. If it isn’t the lack of access to water, especially on hot days, then a metabolic condition may be a cause. Kidney problems and fevers are two possible culprits. There are times your dog’s poop is covered with mucous. This can be shiny looking slime to a thick jelly case around the feces. Sometimes it can be streaked with blood. These are signs of inflammation in your pup’s colon. If it happens on occasion, the problem may be a dietary indiscretion. It is often seen after a stressful event like boarding, a big day of exercise, and a fun day of visiting. If it occurs more often, you will need to see your veterinarian to find the cause and correct it. Bring a sample of the poop to the appointment to rule out intestinal worms and parasites. The color of the feces can be important. Normal is a variation of brown. When the stool changes color and that color change is often a deeper problem which may be going on. Some odd colors for stools can be white, yellow, orange, and bloody red to name a few. Poop that is loose, watery, pasty, and mushy can have many causes too. Loose stools is called diarrhea. Sometimes these changes happen when Fido is stressed by doing dog sports or boarded. Dietary indiscretions such as eating compost, something found on a walk, and drinking salt water are a few examples of reasons for loose stools. Another cause can be food allergies. Many times it is parasites. There are viruses and bacteria, which can be the culprit too. Some drugs, especially antibiotics, will cause diarrhea.Odoris another aspect of the feces to be considered. Dog poop doesn’t necessarily have a bad odor unless you get it on your shoe. If the odor is offensive, putrid, or has changed with an abnormal consistency, it is time to go to your veterinarian.Ifyourpup is having poop that is not a type 2 or 3 on the Bristol Stool scale, call your veterinarian for an appointment. When dog poop is abnormal more often than not, there is a problem and your dog needs help.

If I ask her if she has anything else to say, she says she’d like a dark blue thin fleece that she can snuggle in. I see it laying on the hardwood floor and her making a total mess of it when she spins around in her sleep.

She knows that capturing the bond between owner and pet creates priceless and timeless art through photography. It can not only be enjoyed in the here and now but be a vital part of the healing process. “Anytime I have ever done an ‘End of Life’ session and provided a client with images of their sick and/or elderly pet, words cannot describe the emotions that you can see them go through when they see the final pieces. The most common comment I receive is, 'I am so thankful that I did this.'”

Not interested in having a painting or customized photo done of your pet but still want to honor your dog, either one who has passed or is still with you? A digital book is easy to make these days, and not pricey. Upload your fav pictures, add some pertinent backdrops and captions, and you’ll have a nice memento. If you’re making this for a sibling or friend, enlist the help of someone who has access to their pet pics. (Snapfish.com/ or type in ‘digital photo books’ in search engines for options.)Asmall $12.95 hardcover book that can heal is For Every Dog an Angel by Christine Davis. The book celebrates the connection between people and their “forever dogs.” The book is available on Amazon, and the review explains, “From the moment a puppy is born, the book tells us, a guardian angel is there to welcome the puppy into the world and to help the pup understand what makes it so very special.” The enchanting book is filled with colorful illustrations and can bring comfort. I was gifted this book when I lost my Golden, Camden, and years later keep it on my coffee table to Donateread. to a rescue group or animal nonprofit in your animal’s name. It’s a nice feeling to give back. If this is a present to a friend, notate the gesture in a card. Your friend will appreciate that you took the time to think about theSincepet. many people choose to say ‘hello’ when I’m dusting. (Check out ashestoashespetcrematory.com/ forIfurns.)youhave a family member who has lost a pet or still has a current adored pet, a few of these ideas make good holiday gifts—they will sneak up sooner than you think. Gina agreed, “Gifting a special someone a holiday gift is one of the most thoughtful things one can do. These days, our pets aren't just pets, they're family. They hold an invaluable and indescribable place in our lives. They impact us for the better, and what more special way to honor this place they hold in our lives than with a gift [such as a photo session] to commemorate this.” Deb added, “The fall is a great time to start creating these memories or to start holiday shopping. I offer gift certificates, can do custom album and art commissions and am always happy to chat about their specific needs and ideas.”

Another(ginasoulephoto.com/)interestingoption is Ashes to Ashes Pet Memorial Prints, a division of Harbor View Studio. Gina Soule, MSPA, PA-C, Internationally Award-Winning Fine Art photographer and owner of Gina Soule Photo, believes in capturing the essence of your pets while they’re still with you. “Don't wait until it is too late. Your pets are family, and you want to capture and remember the good times with them while they're at their very best.”

Deb said this Tribute Session is perfect for pets that are starting to get into the golden years. “I had someone refer to this as her pups’ ‘senior portraits’ recently which I love.”Sheadmitted it can feel morbid on the surface, but there’s an upside. they had beautiful images of the duo with themselves. “That is one of the reasons a lot of folks use a professional photographer—to be in the photos. Be there with your pet. Be present. They love you so much and that love will show through in the images.” (bffpetphotos.com/)

SEPTEMBER 2022 5 passed, I was devastated. His portrait helped me remember the joy and love that he gave to my life.” She explained that the philosophy of her business is rooted in the thought that art heals. With a few uploaded images of your pet, she can create a stunning piece. “The feedback I have received after helping dozens of people with a memorial pet portrait over the past ten-plus years is that the painting truly helped in healing a little piece of their hearts.”

Kris Potter The adolescent period is a challenging one for all species, including dogs. Reflecting on our own adolescence chapter may bring to mind its uncomfortable soup of emotions as we rollercoastered our way toward adulthood. We were oblivious to the fact that we were, in essence, hostages in a critical stage of our development. The other side was invisible to us, but our parents knew (hoped!) that with enough support, guidance, and work on their part, everyone would survive and eventually, maybe even thrive.

“I have a 10-month old puppy who jumps on everybody.” There is no such thing as a “10 month old puppy” or an “8 month old puppy.” A puppy loses her puppy license long before that, at about 5 months. Our young puppies sometimes enjoy a privileged life full of successfully pushing the envelope of acceptable behaviors to the breaking point, then, when they have officially been sucked into the depths of teenagerdom, those same behaviors are suddenly the reason for their humans to react negatively. We can do better if we understand the developmental stages of our dogs.Biological, physical, and hormonal changes abound as any youngster of any species approaches the adolescent threshold. Our puppies may demonstrate that they’ve grown into, rather than out of, behaviors we assumed would automatically vanish over time. Environmental stimuli that never before seemed to bother a puppy suddenly strike abject fear in him. A pup who always seemed to get along with other dogs is now growling at them when they get close. The skills we worked so hard on and with so much success seem to have suddenly flown out the window. And now he’s into chewing again? What happened? Adolescence happened, and it’s here for the long-haul. Surprise! New puppy owners can be unaware of this very significant transitional period, and it arrives quickly! We tend to think there’s a direct connection between “puppy” and “adult,” but there’s actually a lot that has to occur before a puppy is fully ready to crawl into her adult dog skin. We need to respect and understand this, and just like our parents did for us, patiently support and guide our teenaged dogs towards a better future. It will pass. Your teenage dog will become an adult. Things will settle down. But first you need to get through this as you keep a constant and hopeful eye on the light at the other end of the tunnel. Yes, the velociraptor will come and stay for a while, but he will eventually leave, with your help. Puppies will start to enter

adolescence around 4-5 months. When I say, “puppyhood flies by”, it’s true! You get your puppy at about 8 weeks, and a mere 9 weeks later he’s rounding the bend towards adolescence. The work you do in that short window of time especially will have a direct impact on how well you all survive his adolescence. This is why puppy classes are recommended so strongly - they help build a strong foundation which can set the whole team up for Adolescentsuccess.dogsbetween 8 and 18 months make up the majority of dogs relinquished to shelters. Dogs don’t reach physical and social maturity until about 2.5 to 3 years of age, so it’s not a quick transition phase. Get Ready! 1. Crate or Confinement Training. Some surgical procedures are elective, meaning not urgent, and therefore can be scheduled in the future giving you time to prepare. If your dog is not comfortable with confinement, now is the time to start the process. Confinement can be in a crate, exercise pen, or designated “safe haven” room. This area should be in a low activity area of the house, if your dog is easily overstimulated, or for more social dogs, closer to the action may be better. You can always adjust the location later if needed.

Long nails cause postural changes in dogs, putting abnormal pressure on joints; therefore, monthly nail care is recommended.Forarthriticpups with long hair, sanitary issues often arise when toileting. Pain and decreased mobility change how dogs position their body to eliminate leaving a mess behind on their fur. It is best to check pets daily and have frequent sanitary trims to prevent sores and infection. Finally, groomers can spot subtle changes in your pet when they visit routinely. A fresh set of eyes can help affirm your observations warrant the help of a veterinarian. Even though osteoarthritis is a painful lifelong condition, it can be managed through lifestyle changes, medication, alternative therapies, and proper handling. On Facebook, visit Holly's Army and Canine Arthritis Support groups for additional help and encouragement.

Grooming is integral in caring for canines, but what about dogs with compromised mobility and chronic pain associated with osteoarthritis? Osteoarthritis (OA) is an inflammatory condition resulting in lameness and pain due to joint structural and functional decline (Anderson et al., 2020). OA is the leading cause of chronic pain in dogs, affecting 80% of dogs over eight years of age and potentially 35% of all dogs (CAM, 2022). Despite this, regular grooming for arthritic dogs remains vital to canine care by preventing long toenails, sanitary problems, painful mats, and encouraging skin health. Developing sensible grooming strategies for dogs with OA includes recognizing signs of arthritic pain, finding a qualified groomer, and consulting with a veterinarian concerning proper pain control.Itisimportant to note that dogs with OA will have good days and bad, making identifying a chronic pain state challenging for owners and professionals. According to Canine Arthritis Management, OA pain is characteristically consistent, lowintensity, and non-localized, with the potential for intermittent flare-ups (CAM, 2022). OA pain is gradual and cumulative, and contrary to acute pain, a dog with OA pain does not usually vocalize discomfort. Instead, chronic pain is communicated through visual signals, including but not limited to: Slowing down on walks to finish a walk when jumping up or down or using stairs getting up more in Licking the joints in an uncoordinated way tolerance to handling and to being groomed

4. Soft Bedding. Make sure the area where your dog is confined has soft bedding for comfort. If using a larger enclosure, such as, an exercise pen or room, you may want to consider a toddler mattress on the floor covered in a protective cover. This may make it easier for your pet to climb on and off safely. These beds can also be made up to look more like a real bed which can be comforting for some dogs.

• Allowing the owner to stay for all or part of the groom if needed

The top risk factors for developing canine osteoarthritis are obesity, abnormally formed joints such as hip dysplasia, and previous injuries. For more information on OA as well as professional support, visit www. caninearthritis.co.uk.Aprofessionalgroomer can be a great ally in caring for a canine with osteoarthritis. If you suspect your pup suffers from chronic pain or has been diagnosed with OA, finding the appropriate groomer is essential. Groomers that provide one-on-one grooming in a quiet salon atmosphere or a house call environment would be ideal. Dogs coping with chronic pain may be hypersensitive to combing, clipping, or even touching, requiring a calm, steady, gentle hand. Ask prospective groomers if they can tailor services to sensitive, accommodatepainful dogs by:•

At the grooming salon, it is best not to strive for a perfect haircut but to ask the groomer to provide a "comfort groom" that makes hair manageable but focuses on problem areas such as feet, nails, and rear. Trimming long hair growing over paw pads and managing nail length gives dogs better traction.

2. Window Film: Temporary window film can help to reduce your dog’s obsession with squirrels and birds outside, as well as reactivity directed towards people and dogs walking past your house and yard. Place them low on the windows to let in the light while making it difficult for your dog to see out.

• Allowing the freedom to sit, stand, lay down Decrease the appointment length by booking more frequently Splitting the grooming session into two appointments

• Changes

3. Food Dispensing and Puzzle Toys. Feed your dog all, or most of, their meals out of food dispensing and puzzle toys. There are many options to choose from including some that you can make yourself. Be creative. Prestuffing them with your dog’s own food and freezing them can increase the difficulty level for your dog making them last longer.

Your dog just had surgery and now your veterinarian tells you she must be cage rested for the next 14 days. Maybe, your dog was just hit by a car and broke his leg, so now he has a splint, and your veterinarian tells you it will heal with 6 weeks of cage rest, or your new rescue dog just tested positive for heartworms and needs treatment including two months of cage rest. You ask your veterinarian; how will I keep my dog quiet for that long? What am I going to do? Cage rest is frequently prescribed for all the scenarios listed above and more. By limiting your dog’s activity levels, incisions are given time to heal and bones time to fuse, and the risk for complications is significantly reduced. Sometimes though, cage rest can be torture for all. What can you do to make the cage rest process easier?

and desire that these dogs express for their work – and the joy in the relationship with their handler. It is a far cry from a dog following a person with a bait bag and eating cookies. These dogs want to pay attention and want to try and solve problems because they understand it is a good deal for them; there could be treat rewards, petting and attention, or play. You just never know – but it’s all Dogsgood!that make a mistake and don’t perform correctly are eager to do better, not worried about being wrong.Ifyou have seen a dog unhappy in a competitive obedience situation, it is most likely the result of lack of understanding and poor training. If your dog understands the reward system, why wouldn’t it want to try and earn rewards? The problem could be: Lack of understanding. You have not done a good job teaching the foundation and have asked too much. Lack of attention. You have not taught attention well enough so that the dog realizes that paying attention to you is the gateway to rewards. Your handling is poor or not clear so your dog is confused. Don’t blame the dog – look in the mirror. You have been insensitive or unaware of how YOUR dog learns and what YOUR dog needs for support and success. You do not have a clearly understood reward system. It is either confusing and inconsistent or not valuable enough to YOUR dog. You are not a part of the reward. You let the food or toy do the work without being sincere and genuine to your dog. Your mind is somewhere else and your dog knows it. All the above reasons can cause problems in any training situation. Competitive obedience offers so much to truly allow your dogs to reach their full potential, and most dogs love to learn. Done correctly, it is stimulating and exciting for both dog and handler and will allow you to form a relationship full of intimate understanding and joy –give it a try. Find an accomplished instructor who can truly help you bring out the best in you and your dog.

Lastly, read the fine print before signing or paying for anything. Before purchasing a plan, consider your alternatives. If you are good at budgeting and setting aside money in a bank account for your pet, that may be all you need. However, recognize that veterinary emergencies can cost thousands of dollars, so it may take you a while to build that account. There are also products available for pets that work just like a Health Savings Account (HSA) would work for us. In summary, it is unlikely that the cost of veterinary care for a pet will decrease. To help make sure you can pay for the care your pet needs, consider pet health insurance or its alternatives before you need it. You and your pet will be glad you did.

Pet Insurance – How to Choose a Provider by Don Hanson ACCBC, BFRAP, CDBC, CPDT-KA photo credit: debra bell

L ast month I discussed reasons I recommend every pet parent consider purchasing pet insurance, especially when their pet is young and before they have any preexisting conditions. When we decided to purchase pet health insurance for Muppy nine years ago, there were far fewer options. That also means it was not as complicated as it is today. There were fewer companies, and it was easier to find independent and unbiased reviews online. Today several major insurance companies are offering policies for pets as they see this as a financially lucrative market. Their participation could drive prices up or down. Also, as we see more veterinary practices purchased by corporate entities, they may recommend specific insurance where they have a financial interest. That concerns me.When you see articles online with a title like "The Best Pet Health Insurance for 2022," be aware that there is a distinct possibility the review is biased. You will find many such articles, and they seldom rate individual companies the same way. It's common for vendors of all sorts of products to use this technique to make their product look like it is number one. As you consider a provider, I first recommend choosing wisely for the long haul. Remember, once your pet has been seen for a health issue, it is unlikely to be covered by insurance because it is a preexisting something occurs, you will likely need to stay with that insurer to maintain coverage. Don't select the first plan you see, the one that is cheapest or the one your cousin, breeder, or favorite shelter recommended without doing your own research. A great place to start is by asking pet care professionals like your veterinarian, boarding kennel, daycare, groomer, and trainers about their experience with insurance. They may have their own experience and know other clients that have had good and bad experiences. Like hairdressers and bartenders, our clients often share withHowever,us. also recognize that in some cases, pet care professionals, breeders, shelters, and rescues may receive compensation for recommending certain pet health insurance products. So don't be afraid to ask them if they fall into thisWhencategory.talking to your veterinarian, ask if he has worked with the provider you are considering. As with human healthcare, you need your provider and insurer to work together. Insurers need information to process a claim, so you want to ensure your veterinarian can and will provide that information as required.Speak to other people in your circle who have pets that might have pet insurance. What has their experienceDeterminebeen?your budget and if you will be able to maintain payments moving forward. The price of your policy will likely go up yearly just as everything else

increases. If you stop making payments and your pet has an issue being covered, you may lose that coverage forever. Assess what you want your plan to cover. You can purchase insurance that covers annual wellness visits, but they are likely to be more expensive than a plan that only covers emergencies. Some plans may offer discounts for multiple pets, while others may limit the maximum annual payout. If complementary therapies are essential to you (acupuncture, Chinese medicine, Chiropractic, and Homeopathy), make sure they are covered by the plan you select.

RESCUE OF THE MONTH: P.A.W.S. ANIMAL ADOPTION CENTER Low-Cost Wellness Clinics & Other Necessary Programs

I recently had the opportunity to chat with Shelly A. Butler, Executive Director for P.A.W.S. Animal Adoption Center, aka P.A.W.S. This nonprofit is a no-kill shelter that serves Camden, Rockport, Lincolnville, Belfast, Hope, Northport, and six other nearby towns. Founded in 1974 by a group of Midcoast animal lovers, their mission has remained constant: to provide a safe, caring environment for homeless and abandoned dogs and cats and to promote responsible pet ownership. Shelly said their programs to aid their communities are all-important. To that end, they offer PAWS Cares Wellness Clinics and other veterinary services on a rolling basis in one of their twelve towns/islands each month to help keep their area pets healthy. Appointments can be scheduled online for spay/neuter and wellness appointments which include a full exam, parasite treatments, Lyme shots, microchips, and preventative vaccinations.

Other programs that P.A.W.S. is proud of includes their Pet Food & Supply Pantry and their partnership with area social service providers like New Hope Midcoast & the Knox County Homeless Coalition. The Pet Food Pantry is a valuable resource for their communities. After a request for pet food assistance and appointment for pick-up is made, P.A.W.S. will provide a one-month supply of dog and cat pet food. Requests will be filled on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last. Check the website for full info, link below. Their partnership with New Hope Midcoast in Rockland is vital to many. New Hope Midcoast provides emergency shelter to those facing domestic, dating, and stalking abuse. (For more info on this nonprofit that was previously called New Hope for Women, newhopemidcoast.org/.) P.A.W.S. aids them by temporarily boarding animals for those owners who are leaving threatening situations. On the day we spoke, Shelly said she had new requests from their social service partners to help pet owners who were struggling. Now onto P.A.W.S. pets. Shelly said they provide services for about 1,500 animals annually. In 2021, they had a 97% placement rate--587 pets found a new home. Their dogs come in as strays, owner relinquishments, and they open their doors to canines & felines from their partners, Georgia’s Road Trip Home, and Puerto Rico’s Love4Satos. (Sato means mutt in Spanish.) P.A.W.S.’s cozy and clean facility can house up to twenty dogs and one hundred cats. They also rely on foster homes, especially for their pregnant or special needs animals. Area residents can support P.A.W.S. by volunteering, fostering, donating, or just stopping by 123 John Street in Camden to visit with the pets. For more and to see all their available dogs, pawsadoption.org/.

7. Muzzles should be fun. Just like Elizabethan collars, dogs can learn that wearing a muzzle is fun. If your dog is anxious or more sensitive to pain, muzzle training should be priority number one.

8. Reward Based Training. To pass the time during confinement, teaching your dog new behaviors such as nose targeting (nose to hand), how to settle on a mat, or even cooperative care “start button behaviors” like a chin rest (chin on hand) can have many benefits. Training is enrichment and can be a fun activity for both you and your dog. The behaviors learned can also be used as part of the recovery process (i.e., physical therapy).

Spread the word to your greyhound (and sighthound) friends. Check out our walk page on Facebook and RSVP. facebook.com/GGGW2022Mainehttps://www.

6. Elizabethan Collar AKA “Cone of Shame.” Elizabethan collars can be stressful for dogs, sometimes more stressful than the confinement itself. There are many alternatives to the dreaded cone such as a body suit, inflatable collar, or homemade t-shirt. You can also teach you dog that wearing the cone means good things, especially when they choose to put it on themselves.
