NAVSUP FLC Bahrain Recognized for Exemplary Safety Practices in 3rd Quarter

FY23: A Call for Recognition and Contribution

For their unwavering commitment to safety, the Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) - Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Bahrain received the prestigious quarterly Safety award for the 3rd Quarter of Fiscal Year 2023. The accolade was presented by Mr. Mark Craddock, NSA Bahrain Safety Director, in a ceremony that celebrated NAVSUP FLC Bahrain's outstanding accomplishments in safety management during this period.

For his untiring efforts, Mr. Brandon Carey, Collateral Duty Safety Officer for NAVSUP FLC Bahrain, accepted the award on behalf of the dedicated team, signifying the exceptional achievements of NAVSUP FLC Bahrain in ensuring a safe and secure working environment during the Quarter.

One of the standout accomplishments of NAVSUP FLC Bahrain has been its exceptional personnel management in the Enterprise Safety Application Management System (ESAMS). This system plays a pivotal role in tracking safety-related data and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. NAVSUP FLC Bahrain's meticulous management in ESAMS reflects their commitment to thorough recordkeeping and adherence to safety standards.

In addition, NAVSUP FLC Bahrain has consistently excelled in training and medical surveillance compliance, a testament to their

enduring culture of safety. They've fostered a safe and positive climate for reporting of unsafe or unhealthy working conditions (UUWC), empowering personnel to identify and address potential hazards promptly.

Moreover, Mr. Brandon Carey has been a driving force in initiating safety improvements within NAVSUP FLC Bahrain. His proactive initiatives, including ensuring timely completion of safety training programs and focus on safety awareness campaigns, have significantly contributed to

NAVSUP FLC Bahrain's safety culture.

Chief Jaleka Muse, another key figure in NAVSUP FLC Bahrain, has been instrumental in promoting safety. Her leadership and dedication have played a pivotal role in ensuring that safety measures are integrated into daily operations.

Furthermore, NAVSUP FLC Bahrain has demonstrated strong participation in safety council meetings, actively engaging in safety discussions and contributing to collective safety efforts and knowledge sharing.

As we celebrate this achievement during the 3rd Quarter FY23, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to NAVSUP FLC Bahrain for their unwavering dedication to safety, a cornerstone of their continued success.

We also take this opportunity to encourage other NSA Bahrain departments and tenant commands to follow NAVSUP FLC Bahrain's example and submit nominations for their achievements. Every department and team within our installation plays a crucial role in fostering a positive safety culture and their contributions deserve recognition. Let us celebrate the dedication and hard work of all personnel who contribute to the safety and well-being of our personnel and the mission.

By recognizing and appreciating the efforts of our colleagues and peers, we can collectively create an even safer and more secure environment for all. Let's continue to strive for excellence in safety and foster a culture of recognition and appreciation within NSA Bahrain. Together, we can achieve remarkable results in ensuring the safety and success of our missions.

NSA Bahrain Observes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

What is Domestic Violence?

Every October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This month is used to bring awareness to individuals, families, and communities to make largescale change in preventing violence in our community. All month, the Fleet & Family Support Center will be sharing information and resources to better advocate and assist victims and survivors who have experienced domestic violence. All community members play an important role in supporting victims and encouraging those using abuse or violence to seek help.

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of abusive behavior in an intimate partner relationship to gain power and control over the other partner. It can be physical,

sexual, emotional, economical, psychological, or technological actions or threats of actions taken to coerce a partner. Behaviors that can be seen in abusive relationships can include intimidation, manipulation, humiliation, isolation, terrorization, coercion, threatening, blaming, or hurting someone. Now that you can identify abusive behaviors, keep in mind that anyone can be a victim of domestic violence regardless of gender identity, race, age, religion, or sexual orientation. How can you support

someone who is experiencing Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence does not only impact the relationship in which it occurs. It can also impact family members (especially children), friends, co-workers, and the community. Providing support to a friend or family member experiencing domestic violence may seem overwhelming, but there are steps you can take. Acknowledge that their situation is difficult and scary. Remind them that they are not alone and that you are there for them.

If they choose to talk about the abuse, listen and show empathy. Let them know that the abuse is not their fault and that you believe them. Ask what you can do to help. Empower them to make their own decisions. Help them create a safety plan. Encourage them to seek help and support. Let them know the options that are available to them. What resources are available?

Everyone deserves a healthy relationship and there are people who can help. At FFSC NSA Bahrain, the Family Advocacy

Program supports contractors, DoD civilians, service members and their families impacted by domestic abuse through victim advocacy and crisis intervention. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached 24/7 at 001-800-799-SAFE (7233) or by visiting www. thehotline.org. Military OneSource is available 24/7 worldwide at 001-800-3429647 or 001-703-253-7599 or www.militaryonesource. mil/confidential-help. How can you get involved?

The third Thursday of October is nationally recognized as “Purple Thursday”, where people are encouraged to wear purple to increase awareness for domestic violence. It is also an easy way for people to show their commitment to promoting healthy relationships. We invite you to show your support to promote domestic violence awareness month by wearing purple on Thursday, October 19.

5 - Chaplain’s Corner 6 - Cinema & Safety 6 Sailor in the Spotlight 2-3 NSA Bahrain Holds Chief Pinning Ceremony

NSA BAHRAIN HOLDS CHIEF PINNING CEREMONY

Fifteen Sailors and one Marine from U.S. Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain earned the title of “chief” during a chief petty officer (CPO) pinning ceremony at NSA Bahrain, Sept. 28, 2023.

The ceremony was the capstone event to six weeks of Chiefs initiation which began when the CPO advancement results were released in August.

During initiation, the NSA Bahrain Chiefs Mess introduced those who were selected for advancement to challenges designed to build on their leadership skills and provide a better understanding of what it means to be a Navy chief.

Command Master Chief Karl Critides, NSA Bahrain Command Master Chief, spoke during the ceremony and congratulated the 15 chief selectees and honorary Marine, representing 4 commands, on their selection and offered perspective on their recent leadership journey.

“Six weeks ago, these top performing, confident, and ambitious first class petty officers received the news every Sailor dreams of – congratulations, you were selected for advancement to chief petty officer,” said Critides, who enlisted in the Navy in August 2001. “They celebrated with smiles, laughter, and phone calls to loved ones and mentors. Their hard work and dedication had finally paid off, and they were floating on cloud nine. They were confident, ambitious, and up for any challenge that might lie ahead.”

Critides said that quickly reality set in for the newly selected chief petty officers and the group came to the realization that they had not yet arrived. Every day moving forward proved harder and full of new challenges.

“They soon learned the only way to succeed was to work together as a team, stay motivated, and to embrace a new concept, becoming a humble servant to the Navy and her Sailors,” said Critides. “Nearly 40 days later, amongst countless trials and tribulations, I can say with confidence that this group rose to the occasion, and I could not be more proud of them.”

Among others who played a part in the ceremony was guest speaker Capt. Zachariah Aperauch, NSA Bahrain commanding officer. Addressing the new chief petty officers as they stood in ranks across from those they would soon join, he spoke of the significance of their new roles.

“The history of Chief Petty Officers is woven into the very fabric of the Navy, with stories of heroism and unwavering dedication,” said Aperauch, a 1999 officer candidate school graduate.

“As an example, amidst the chaos of the Pearl Harbor attach, as the USS Utah was

2 October 4, 2023 The Bahrain Desert Times

on the brink of capsizing, Chief Petty Officer Peter Tomich’s unwavering courage made the difference.”

Aperauch recounted how Tomich selflessly remained at his post in the ship’s engine room, ensuring the safety of this shipmates by securing the boilers selflessly preventing a catastrophic explosion. For his actions, Tomich would be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

“Such profound bravery and sacrifice define the very spirit of a Chief Petty Officer, emphasizing the role they play in safeguarding not just our ships, but the lives of our shipmates,” said Aperauch.

The rank of chief petty officer was established in 1893 and originally included nine ratings. Today, chiefs are regarded for their technical expertise within their ratings, superior administrative abilities, and strong leadership abilities. Chiefs serve as both supervisors and advocates for their Sailors, bridging the gap between the Navy’s officer and enlisted personnel.

NSA Bahrain’s mission is to support U.S. and coalition maritime operations throughout the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations by providing security for ships, aircraft and tenants on board NSA Bahrain and assigned detachments. NSA Bahrain provides efficient and effective shore services to sustain the fleet, enable the fighter and support the family with honor, courage, and commitment.
