Women's History Month is celebrated each March by recognizing the contributions made by women across the world and throughout history. There are countless untold stories of heroism and bravery of admirable women in service that are emphatically well-deserving of due recognition. Across the seas and terrains, to the wild blue skies and even far beyond, they have worn the battle flag and have served with honor and distinction. While there were times when the doors and paths to official military service were limited – or even restricted for years – , women have always found a way to contribute.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, which paved the way for women to officially serve in all U.S. military branches, and the 10th anniversary of opening all combat roles to women.
Since being allowed to join the U.S. Navy more than a century ago in 1917, women have profoundly impacted the Navy and created enduring legacies becoming trailblazers and leaders who excelled in their career fields.
"Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories” is this year’s theme for acknowledging the multitude of stories about female pioneers, both past and present, as important “firsts” who contributed to the achievements of the military services and civilian workforce. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III emphasized this on International Women's Day this year noting that from America's first days, women have made profound
sacrifices and innovative contributions to national security and ultimately have become trailblazers inspiring future generations with their dedication, skill, and patriotism.
While recognizing and celebrating these milestone achievements is crucial to understanding American history, it is equally important to highlight the stories of countless women whose daily service – whether they be outstanding, barrier-breaking or not, still contribute to an ever-growing increase in the amount of women in service and worldwide involvement. The women who inspire countless others every day with their modest determination and hard work in their daily jobs, whether as active-duty members or civilians, undoubtedly pave the way for the future generations of young ladies from all backgrounds who desire to be a part of the Navy or any notable service around the globe.
In this issue, we honor the motivation, tenacity and extraordinary achievements found in the quiet stories of all the women here on Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain. We recognize the accomplishments of these women in their respective departments and their collective victories which continuously stand to strengthen our workforce through the leverage of their unique experiences and expertise in support of our mission.
So to all the women on board NSA Bahrain, in observance of the entire month of March, we honor and salute each and every one of you!

International Maritime Exercise 2023 Ends during Ceremony in Oman

The Middle East region’s largest maritime exercise, International Maritime Exercise (IMX) 2023, concluded during a final briefing and ceremony in Muscat, Oman, March 16.
U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) led the 18-day naval training event, which it combined with exercise Cutlass Express led by U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa. More than 7,000 personnel from more than 50 nations and international organizations participated.
“I liked this gathering because it was international. Together we stand, divided we fall,” said Yemen Coast Guard Cmdr. Faozi Sultan. “This exercise is of great importance for all the countries that participated because it was a chance to exchange experiences and learn from each other.”
The exercise focused on combined command and control, maritime security, mine countermeasures, unmanned systems and artificial intelligence integration, and global health management.
Participating international forces and organizations were divided into five operational task forces than spanned across the Arabian Gulf, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, Indian Ocean and East African
coastal regions.
“I’ve learned a lot in the decision-making process, especially through multiple training situations that happened at the same time. It made me think outside the box,” said Egyptian Navy Cmdr. Mohamed Gharbyia.
U.S. Navy expeditionary sea base USS Lewis B. Puller (ESB 3) embarked 45 personnel from seven nations while operating in the Arabian Gulf. Participants conducted professional exchanges facilitated by U.S. Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel on vessel boarding procedures, evidence collection, safety and medical care.
IMX 2023 also employed more than 30 unmanned and artificial intelligence systems that partners operated on both sides of the Arabian Peninsula.
In the Gulf of Aqaba, participants simulated a ship-toshore patient transfer using a MARTAC T-38 Devil Ray unmanned surface vessel (USV). The surface drone successfully moved a mannequin from a crewed vessel to land, marking the first time a USV was used in a medical evacuation training scenario.
Additionally, U.S. and international partners deployed for the first time in the Middle East a long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle called a K1000ULE.
The aerial drone can fly for more than 26 hours, and is useful for further enhancing development of a resilient communications network for unmanned systems.
“This exercise was a good platform to have regional navies under one roof. We have different tactics and procedures, but we had one cause during the exercise of coordination, cooperation and
interoperability,” said Pakistan Navy Lt. Cmdr. Najaf Rizvi. This was the eighth iteration of IMX since its establishment in 2012.
U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Brad Cooper from NAVCENT served as exercise commander, while officers from the United Arab Emirates, France, Pakistan and Egypt served deputy commander, vice
commander, chief of staff and maritime operations center director, respectively. IMX’s five operational task forces were commanded by leaders from Bahrain, Jordan, Kenya, Saudi Arabia and the United States. Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Bahrain’s mission is to provide operational logistics support and quality-of-life programs to Navy, joint and coalition warfighters, DoD civilians and their families in the 5th Fleet area of responsibility. The NAVSUP FLC Bahrain Navy Reserve component stands ready to provide key support to NAVSUP FLC Bahrain’s core mission and functions at a moment’s notice. Efficient operational communication and collaboration between the active and reserve units is paramount to mission readiness.
NAVSUP FLC Bahrain Navy Reserve Headquarters is located in the Naval Reserve Center on Joint Base Dobbins in Marietta, GA and has a detachment in Washington, D.C. There are 52 reservists in the unit, which primarily consists of supply officers and logistic specialists. The reserve personnel conduct annual training (AT) on site at NAVSUP FLC Bahrain for a maximum time of 29 days, and also mobilize to various commands worldwide. Since September 2021, they have supported missions in Djibouti, Germany, and Scotland. Specifically, the assistance in Crombie, Scotland was crucial for the Ukraine support campaign.
The NAVSUP FLC Bahrain Reserve Program Director, collects data from all of the various codes at the command and
creation of requirements for reserve support to complete Annual Training on-site in Bahrain are crucial to mission success. Approximately 40 annual training orders have been executed since September 2021, which has increased the readiness of the Navy Reserve personnel, and places the unit at the highest level of readiness throughout the fleet.
The NAVSUP FLC Bahrain reservist personnel train with six various entities within the command, including contracting, operations, postal, warehousing, transportation and Hazardous Materials. The training is
directly linked to their assigned specialty within the command organization and their active duty counterpart’s billet. During AT, each member of the unit is paired with their active duty counterpart to complete on-the-job training and qualifications that make them ready warfighters. The importance of being ready warfighters is within the scope of the “Get Real Get Better” initiative being implemented by the Navy, where we strive to improve existing practices through continuous improvement. Through the AT, the NAVSUP FLC Bahrain reserve personnel remain ready year round to execute the
mission for NAVSUP FLC Bahrain, and directly contribute to the command’s continuity of operations planning and preparedness in the event that mobilization is required to align with the active force, or offer support through the Reserve Emergency Logistics Readiness Team. The training is not limited by rank, as all officers are also partnered and prepared to sustain operations in war time.

NAVCENT Hosts Ukraine Delegation for Tour of Unmanned and AI Task Force

Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT), U.S. 5th Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces, welcomed a Ukrainian delegation to the U.S. Navy's regional headquarters in Bahrain, March 13.
Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Arab Emirates Dmytro Senik joined six members of the Ukrainian Parliament for a NAVCENT briefing on regional maritime security cooperation and unmanned technology integration.
The delegation learned about NAVCENT's latest efforts in integrating advanced unmanned systems and artificial intelligence into regional maritime operations.
An unmanned and artificial intelligence task force NAVCENT established in 2021, called Task Force 59, is currently spearheading an effort to form a multinational fleet of 100 unmanned surface vessels based in the Middle East by
end of the summer. U.S. 5th Fleet announced in February the task force and regional partners have approached the halfway point toward that goal.
NAVCENT is currently leading the largest naval exercise in the Middle East, called International Maritime Exercise 2023. The training event includes 7,000 personnel from over 50 countries and organizations, 35 ships and more than 30 unmanned and artificial intelligence systems operating in the Arabian Gulf, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea, Indian Ocean and East African coastal regions.
The U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations encompasses approximately 2.5 million square miles of water area and includes the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea, parts of the Indian Ocean and three critical choke points at the Strait of Hormuz, Suez Canal and Strait of Bab al-Mandeb.
NAVSUP FLC Bahrain Hosts Industry Day More than 100 participants engaged with Navy contracting and maintenance professionals

Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Bahrain hosted an Industry Day engagement with more than 40 local companies in attendance on Feb. 23 in an effort to increase vendor awareness and participation in ship maintenance and repair services procured by NAVSUP FLC Bahrain in the 5th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR).
The function of an Industry Day is to provide important information to emerging and established business with the US Government and the federal contracting process specifically geared toward enhancing awareness of ship repair and maintenance opportunities. NAVSUP FLC Bahrain contracting personnel provided an overview of how to do business with the U.S. Government and discussed different contract types. NAVSUP FLC Bahrain is responsible for awarding and managing contracts to shipyards for the repair and maintenance of homeported and deployed US vessels within the 5th Fleet AOR.
Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center (FDRMC) and Military Sealift Command (MSC) provided customer overviews and requirements for their maintenance needs in the AOR. The attendees learned about FDRMC and MSC maintenance opportunities and the application and award process implemented by US federal law, regulations, policies,
and procedures.
The event marked the first in-person Industry Day hosted by NAVSUP FLC Bahrain since the coronavirus pandemic beginning in March 2020. It was a tremendous opportunity to have contracting and maintenance professionals from around the globe to meet in support of mission readiness. NAVSUP contracting personnel (SUP 02) from Mechanicsburg, Penn.; Yokosuka, Japan; and Naples, Italy attended, along with FDRMC Detachment Bahrain leadership and MSC Headquarters guests from Norfolk, Va.
“This year's Industry Day was very well received. We had tremendous interest within the local business market,” said Mr. Rick Bauer, NAVSUP FLC Bahrain Director of Contracting. “More than 100 participants pre-registered for the event this year; and we had outstanding support from our customers, in providing relevant information to the business community.”
NAVSUP FLC Bahrain, FDRMC and MSC collaborate to ensure contracted vendors provide U.S. military vessels the required maintenance, supplies and quality of life products need to keep ships mission-ready.
NAVSUP FLC Bahrain awards contracts with speed and precision to support FDRMC and MSC requirements as maintenance providers while maintaining accountability of government funds. FDRMC and MSC conduct contract management oversight during
execution to ensure the work completed meets Navy standards and requirements. Together the three organizations increase fleet readiness throughout the AOR.
Events such as Industry Day attract a diverse group of companies within the region. Vendors attend each year to gain up-to-date information, customer needs, and contractor requirements for the Department of the Navy. The information presented will help companies submit a more comprehensive proposal for contracted maintenance opportunities. The ability to return to an in-person event supported a substantial increase in participation from vendors. The face-toface interactions and ability to ask questions in an open forum was invaluable for all attendees. Key speakers for the event included Captain Alexander D. Wallace, III, commanding officer NAVSUP FLC Bahrain, Mr. Timothy Kiss, Director for Ship Management MSC, as well as Commander Timothy Dutton, Officer in Charge FDRMC det Bahrain.
“Supporting Industry Day during my annual training at NAVSUP FLC Bahrain was a career highlight,” Navy Reservist Lt. Jamelia Anderson, NR NAVSUP FLC Bahrain Detachment Headquarters said. “It was very informative for myself, being a military contracting professional, to hear from NAVSUP FLC Bahrain's customers and their contractor base. I now have a better
understanding of customers’ needs and how to better communicate requirements to the prospective contractors.”
MSC operates approximately 125 civilian-crewed ships that replenish U.S. Navy ships, conduct specialized missions, strategically preposition combat cargo at sea around the world, and move military cargo and supplies used by deployed U.S. forces and coalition partners.
FDRMC provides emergent, intermediate and depot-level maintenance and modernization for transient and Forward Deployed Naval Forces in U.S. 5th and 6th Fleets through fleet technical assistance, voyage repair, contract management oversight, assessments, and diving and salvage.
