Feeling

Hot Hot Hot!

The temperatures are rising, and you know what that means – it’s time for some fun in the sun! Farah Baig brings you her top picks this summer to get you ready for your next dreamy vacation, staycation or party weekend.

There’s no feeling quite like soaking up the sun on a hot summer’s day. While most people head indoors, few things make me happier than a summer getaway at a coastal town, or a beach day with friends and family.

A great pair of sunnies, a chic bathing suit, beach bag, cute flip flops and summer dress are essential in my books. Here are some of the trendiest pieces from regional and international designers, available in stores or online.

Matches has launched an exclusive 22-piece capsule collection (featured on the cover in an image by photographer Gabriel Ponton) with Kika Vargas through which the designer reimagines her signature voluminous dresses and separates in vibrant floral prints in addition to balancing single-tone pieces. Vargas draws inspiration from her Colombian heritage and bold, art and architecture-inflected perspective. The colour palette reflects the local flora and fauna of Bogotá with lush foliagelike green – the right vibe this

Another excellent addition to your summer wardrobe is Tutti & Co’s luxurious resortwear which are made with quick-drying fabric. The UK brand’s collection pays tribute to the natural colours and textures of its coastal landscape with these head-turning co-ords that are even ideal for a stroll in the city.

True must-haves this summer are the stylish one-piece swimsuits and elegant cover-ups inspired by the sunset from regional swimwear brand Ya Omri. The GCC-based brand’s 2023 collection has an impeccable fit which flatters all shapes and sizes.

At the very top of my wishlist is the chic and versatile ‘Tiger Tote’ collection from the luxury leatherware brand, Tiger Marrón. The totes effortlessly are spacious and lightweight, and are available in four variants: Mama (Large), Youth (Mid), and Cub (Mini). There are four designs available with options made from vegan leather, jacquard, and canvas. If I had to pick one, though, it would have to be the Forest Tiger design in pristine white. I can picture it going beautifully with pastel, bright or monochromatic tones. So versatile!

Better Together!

It’s a time-tested rule of fashion: The accessories can make or break an outfit. Pairing your summer dress or bathing suit with the right accessories will have you feeling truly powerful.

And as I always say, every summer, to willing listeners – don’t forget to protect your peepers! Check out my favourite sunglasses from the SS23 collections of the iconic brands, Burberry and Miu Miu, for some inspiration. Have a fantastic summer!

For the prefect basket bag and oppulent shoulder bags, Kurt Geiger’s collaborative capsule collection with iconic British designer, Matthew Williamson will get you ready for high summer. The 80-piece collection consists of a curation of bags and accessories, shoes, swimwear, and jewellery and vibrant sandals. A trio of hues run deep through every design - turquoise and emerald tones, reminiscent of Matthew’s current home – Mallorca, that evoke the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, warm burnt orange tints peppered with rich aubergine, inspired by the ruggedly seductive sun-baked landscape, and finally the iconic Kurt Geiger multi-colour iteration, a kaleidoscope colour burst.

A MOMENTOUS AMBASSADORIAL DEBUT

Bahrain has a thriving Filipino community, with the East Asian nation comprising one of the Kingdom’s largest expat populations. On June 12, the nation celebrated its independence day with a series of events held in Bahrain.

Kristian Harrison sat down with the newly-appointed Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Anne Jalando-on Louis, to discuss her diplomatic career so far, the current state of bilateral relations between the two countries and their plans to bolster ties in the future.

You have had quite a distinguished career. Can you give us a brief overview of your diplomatic postings and missions to date?

I entered the Philippines Foreign Service and joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1996. I was first assigned to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2000 as a Junior Officer, and then I returned to Manila after that to complete

a compulsory two years of service in my home county. I then became Consul General in Sydney for six years, before returning to Manila in 2011 for another six-year stint.

In 2019 I returned to Malaysia as Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul General, which I was very proud to be part of during the challenging pandemic, before coming to

Bahrain in April last year initially as Chargé d’Affaires. In December, I was officially appointed as a nominee for the Bahrain ambassadorship by my government, and I finally presented my credentials to His Majesty King Hamad in May to officially assume the position. It’s an honour to serve my first full ambassadorship and posting in the Middle East here in Bahrain.

PEOPLE | interview July 2023 www.womanthismonth.com 72

How do you feel about living in Bahrain? What are your key observations about the country and how does it compare to your previous postings?

All the countries I have been to have been different in terms of political and economic relationships, each with various considerations. I’m very pleased with my posting here and the welcome I’ve received in the GCC so far. It’s been a very fulfilling year with many bilateral activities and the local Filipino community is engaging. I look forward to further enhancing ties in the year ahead.

What do you consider to be your most significant goals going forward in this Bahrain posting?

As we have just emerged from the pandemic, there are many activities that had to be put on hold during that period. We are currently trying to work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to jump start high level co-operation again and move forward. Most importantly of all these, we hope to be able to convene the Philippines-Bahrain Bilateral Consultations and forge partnerships in numerous corporate activities. One of my main challenges is to increase trade and drive economic changes through business delegations.

Of your many career achievements over the years, which particular experiences do you think have helped you most in your role as ambassador?

I have been lucky to be part of a career that has been grounded in service. Every day comes with a new challenge, but as long as you greet it with optimism and a willingness to learn, you’ll always overcome them. Working with such great teams also helps, I think keeping an open door and accepting ideas from them makes my job far easier… you have to be a people’s person and I think I strive towards that.

How many Filipino expats live in Bahrain? Has this number risen or declined since the pandemic? What are the most prominent vocations amongst the Filipino community’s residents?

As of April this year, the LMRA reported 57,000 Filipinos in Bahrain, which is up from 49,000 in 2021. It shows that despite businesses closing and many expats leaving during the pandemic, the number has rebounded. This perfectly summarises how efficiently Bahrain dealt with Covid-19 and its aftermath, with businesses now hiring and thriving again.

The highest proportion of residents, at least half, are domestic service workers in households, followed by those in retail, sales and auto shops. Then we have many

members in hospitality, restaurants and of course our skilled professionals lead the way in fields such as engineering, accounting and healthcare.

What activities does the Embassy of Philippines in Bahrain undertake to promote cooperation and unity between the two countries?

Since 1979 we have conducted numerous high level visits, the most important of which was former President Rodrigo Duterte’s visit in August 2017. Last month, Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry Undersecretary, Dr. Mohammed Ali Behzad, led a delegation to Manila. These kinds of high level visits enhance our countries’ partnership and we aim to build on this in the years to come. We have more than 20 signed bilateral agreements, with more pending, in the fields of tourism, education and healthcare amongst others.

To celebrate our 125th Independence Day last month, our embassy hosted a reception featuring 200 guests, featuring a demonstration of Filipino culture through popular singing duo The Nightingales and a selection of our cuisine. We also promoted tourism opportunities and other Filipino products.

Are there any high-level delegations planned for the near future from the Philippines to Bahrain or vice-versa?

We are due to host high level meetings with bilateral consultations at an undersecretary level, with a joint commission meeting to follow. Both will be hosted in Manila. We also hope to have a large business delegation visiting Bahrain before the end of the year.

How do you feel Filipino culture has influenced Bahrain?

Many Bahrainis I have spoken to love to tell me how many Tagalog words they know because of their familiarity with our people, especially those who have domestic help from the Philippines!

I think our food has also had a profound effect in Bahrain with many dishes adapted to the local cuisine. Filipinos are also extremely hard workers, which I think is an ethic that has been adopted by locals.

What are the current trade figures between Philippines and Bahrain and what areas of business or commerce between the two countries do you think could be improved significantly?

In 2022, Bahrain was the Philippines’ 70th largest exporting destination and 75th importing destination in terms of volume. The surplus was in Bahrain’s favour, so we are working to improve that and are positing the Philippines as an alternative source of requirements for the Bahrain market in areas such as spare parts in the aeronautics and motoring industries.

Currently the main imports from the Philippines are agricultural products, especially fruits like bananas, pineapples and cooking condiments. Women and children’s clothing are also popular products. Bahrain’s main export to the Philippines is iron and aluminium.

Is there anything else you would like to add to this interview?

I am very pleased to be assigned to Bahrain, working closely with the government to enhance relations and also to engage with the private and academic sectors, and of course our stakeholders and partners. I have found the Filipino community to be open and cooperative and I would like them to know that the embassy is always open to them should they need our help.

BREATHE LIFE INTO YOUR SKIN

Your skin needs an adequate amount of oxygen to function effectively. Oxygen is delivered to skin cells via red blood cells, where it creates Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) — the essential fuel for cellular activity. Pollution, stress, UV rays, smoking, and fatigue all contribute to a decrease in air quality and oxygen supply to the body. As a result, cellular respiration is inhibited, leading to slowed cellular regeneration, and a build-up of toxins in the skin.

FILORGA’s OXYGEN-GLOW CC Cream has a revolutionary formula that combines triple C control for colour correction and carboxytherapy, a technique that re-oxygenates cells by injecting a small quantity of sterile medical carbon dioxide into the skin. The first-of-its-kind hybrid formula acts as an oxygenation booster, complexion perfecter, and urban protector.

Containing a unique perfecting radiance formula inspired by carboxytherapy, an aesthetic medicine technique that enhances skin glow, the CC cream’s universal adjustable shade features encapsulated micro-pigments that correct, unify, and enhance all skin tones.

This CC Cream also offers triple protection against UV, blue light, and pollution, maintaining a radiant complexion and perfect skin texture throughout the day.

FILORGA has completely redefined the concept of CC cream with this latest offering. Combining the benefits of a high-tech day cream with those of a complexion perfector, this innovative product is unlike any other.

A HEALTHY, GLOSSY TINT!

It’s time we started treating our hair like we do our skin? Harvested from plants, henna is a completely natural, vegan herbal hair colourant which has been used by humans for thousands of years. Rather than breaking the cuticle or stripping away the hair’s natural colour, henna coats the hair in a protective, translucent layer that boosts body and shine – so much so that some people use henna primarily as a treatment for hair health, with the sheer glossy colour being the bonus.

Lush’s unique cocoa butter henna brick enables the product to slide through strands with ease, adding extra conditioning and softness. Wrapped in recycled paper packaging, Lush’s henna is vegan, self-preserving, and completely natural. By sourcing the best Iranian henna

through fair trade and organic cocoa butter from Sierra Leone where farmers are helping restore the Gola rainforest, Lush’s henna brick is not only good for the hair but also the planet.

Lush’s new and improved henna formula contains more cocoa butter than its predecessor for smooth application and soft hair, and is available in five shades: strawberry blonde, cool brown, copper red, warm chestnut brown and deep coffee brown. Available at LUSH stores and on lush.com/mena

MEET THE CARDIAC SCIENTIST!

Yasmin Dickinson (BSc, MSc) is a highly successful woman in STEM based in the UK, known on Instagram by over 16,500 people as ‘The Cardiac Scientist’. Yasmin, who was born and raised in Bahrain, is now a Research Scientist in Cardiovascular Medicine and recently received placement as an intern in science policy in the UK.

Through her interesting content online, she not only informs the general public of developments in the field, but inspires the youth to pursue a career in STEM. She tells Farah Baig about her journey and aspirations, and shares some insight into the life of a scientist.

Could you tell our readers a little bit about yourself, and tell us about your ties to Bahrain?

My mother is Bahraini and my father is English, and I was born and raised in Bahrain. In fact, I went to the British School of Bahrain where I have so many fond memories! However, we later moved to England as my father wanted my siblings and I to carry out our studies there. Leaving Bahrain was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do, no country compares to your home.

I am now a Cardiovascular Medicine and Pharmacology PhD student at the William Harvey Research Institute in London. My research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms at play in heart failure.

My PhD is partly funded by AstraZeneca, whereby I undertake research in their labs

in Cambridge using the latest techniques and technology. In my spare time, I love creating science communication content on Instagram to share my love for science with others.

That’s very interesting! Is there a specific reason for which you chose this field?

The heart has always been a fascinating organ to me. I was always amazed at how it was able to pump non-stop from the moment we are made. The structure and anatomy of the heart is also really beautiful, all the different chambers and cell types, and how they are able to contract rhythmically. I always loved learning about the cardiovascular system since I was in school.

My research in particular is translational, meaning our work collects non-clinical research results and provides clinical applications, therefore more directly impacting human health and wellbeing.

Cardiovascular disease remains to be a leading cause of death globally, and there is still so much that is unknown in terms of possible treatments and better diagnostics, so research in cardiovascular medicine is needed more than ever.

Could you kindly share your experience being a PhD student in Cardiovascular Pharmacology in the UK?

I was initially unsure whether to undertake a PhD after my Master’s degree, so I worked as a Research Assistant at the University of Oxford in the Cardiovascular Medicine Department to see if working in academia was for me. It’s here that I found a real love for research and knew I

PEOPLE | interview July 2023 www.womanthismonth.com 76

wanted to now conduct my own research in the field. I am now in the second-year of my PhD and I couldn’t be happier. I am honoured to have been accepted into one of the most prestigious institutes for cardiovascular research in Europe. I am really passionate about my research project and it’s a great feeling when you get exciting data for the first time!

You’ve amassed quite a following online. Tell us about your presence as ‘The Cardiac Scientist’.

I started my account around the same time as many other creatives, during lockdown in 2020. I had just started my dream job at the University of Oxford and then two months in the country was in lockdown! I wanted to use my time wisely while stuck at home and had always wanted to do something creative and make videos but never had the time previously. The initial aim was to give others an insight into the life of a scientist, as sometimes it can seem quite mysterious. Everyone knows what a doctor does, but what really goes on in a lab? I hoped to introduce and inspire others into the STEM subjects and show them that there is no set educational route into the field. I also wanted to teach laboratory techniques and talk about science in the news. I am a huge advocate for education, I truly believe your education is your freedom and hope to inspire others to think the same way through the work that I do.

It was a bit nerve wracking at first because you have to really put yourself out there for the world to see, but I pushed myself to do it and now I am so happy that I did. Through my science communication journey, I have met

so many amazing, intelligent people and have had an influx of media-related opportunities.

On that note, what would be your advice for young women wishing to pursue a career in STEM?

I want young women to be able to see themselves working in a field they really love, whether that be in the STEM field or not. But specifically, I would want them to know that there is definitely a place for them in STEM, and there are so many different options they could go into: electrical engineering, physics, biology, computer science etc. There will be something that fits their passion and skills, so my advice for them would be to start exploring the different options and to get to know what they like.

Intelligence is beautiful, confidence is beautiful, and doing what you love is also beautiful. Don’t take your education for granted, it’s your tool to create a future you want for yourself. I am also happy for anyone to contact me on Instagram to ask about my studies and give advice about studying in the UK, my door (or DM) is always open!

What can you tell us about your recent placement as an intern in science policy?

I thoroughly enjoy working in research, but I have also been enjoying my science communication work and wanted to know if there were fields where I could merge my love for the two, this is how I came across science policy.

Science policy serves as the bridge between researchers and the public, to translate technical scientific issues into something that can be utilised as progressive policies for society. The aim of our work is also to ensure the transparency of research findings with the public. In order to gain public trust in science we need to be transparent about the ways in which policy makers use evidence to develop regulations, laws, and legislations.

As part of my placement, I will be meeting with members of parliament, researchers, and the general public in Parliament to facilitate discussions in this arena. Politics is a completely new field to me, so I have been learning lots since starting my placement!

How do you feel about this milestone achievement?

I don’t take the time so much to think about how far I have come, maybe I should do that more often. But I am definitely proud of all the things I have achieved so far. It has almost had a positive feedback loop effect on me, where I now want to work hard to achieve more.

It must be said however, that I have been able to achieve all that I have so far because of the love and support of my family. My parents have always allowed me to flourish and invested a lot into my education. Whatever I achieve in this world, it is because of them and I hope God always rewards them for all they have done for me.

What would you say is a long-term and shortterm goal of yours as a woman in STEM?

My short-term goal is to finish my PhD to be honest, and to do it well! There is so much more to a PhD than just doing research to write a thesis. There are many opportunities to do public engagement and outreach, to give talks in secondary and primary schools, to present your work at conferences and network with other scientists.

My long-term goal is to work in a field where I am able to have a positive impact on people on a wider scale. My interests include lecturing at universities and continuing my science communication through the media industry. I hope to create a platform for scientists and science enthusiasts to come together to exchange their knowledge and experience in the field.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I feel Bahrain needs more investment in science and technology; we need more research centres and brilliant scientists to fill those institutes. In particular, we need more medical research scientists and institutes to encourage growth in these sectors, just as our neighbouring countries have done.

Bahrain is filled with intelligent, creative, hard-working people (I know this as I’m one of them) and this is definitely an area we could work on. I am very proud to be Bahraini and wherever I go in life, I always make sure to carry the spirit of my people with me. I will always be happy to collaborate and work with any Bahraini institutes or universities to talk about my work in STEM and encourage others to pursue a career in science.

THE RISE OF THE ‘CHIEF SUSTAINABILITY OFFICER’

Chartered Manager, Eman Deabil (DipESG, PfMP, IPMO-P, SIP), explores the rise of the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) role worldwide and in our region based on data availability.

Sustainability has become an increasingly important topic in recent years. With sustainability being the talk of the town, businesses around the world are recognising the need to take serious actions to address critical challenges such as climate change, social justice, equality, diversity, and inclusion. One way that organisations are approaching this is by appointing a Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) to oversee their sustainability practices.

CSOs in Bahrain

According to various companies’ websites, annual reports and recent news, seven out of 43 listed companies in Bahrain have CSOs appointed at an executive management (c-suite level). 29 percent are standalone CSOs and 71 percent hold the position of CSO and another role.

The First Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO)

The role of the Chief Sustainability Officer is to oversee a company’s sustainability practices, including environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives and metrics. This can include developing and monitoring sustainability framework, strategies, setting objectives and targets, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and reporting standards. The CSO is also responsible for engaging with relevant stakeholders, including investors, board of directors, employees, customers, and communities, to ensure that sustainability efforts and outcomes are aligned with their expectations and needs.

It’s worth mentioning that the role/title is not new as it’s been around for approximately 20 years! However, the role of CSOs might be new in this part of the world.

In 2004, Linda Fisher was the first person to receive the title of ‘Chief Sustainability Officer’ at DuPont. By 2011, there were 29 CSOs in the USA’s publicly listed companies. Ms. Fisher holds a Bachelor of Arts, Master of

Business Administration (MBA) and a doctorate degree in Law. She worked for the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a Deputy Administrator before joining DuPont as a CSO.

According to a 2023 survey conducted by EY, 81 percent of the respondents confirmed that their organisations have a CSO or equivalent role. While 69 percent of the ones who responded that they don’t have a CSO confirmed that their organisations are planning to hire one within six to 12 months.

Ms. Linda Fisher

As a matter of fact, the role of CSOs is evolving in the GCC overall as companies recognise the importance of sustainability in achieving their long-term economic vision. Here are some of the key indications:

1. Increasing focus on ESG reporting and disclosure: Many organisations in the GCC are now recognising the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting and disclosure. CSOs are playing a key role in ensuring that organizations are meeting their ESG reporting requirements.

2. Integration of sustainability into corporate strategy: Organisations in the GCC recognised that sustainability is not a ‘nice to have’ part but an integral part of a long-term strategy. CSOs are increasingly working closely and

aligning efforts with senior management to integrate sustainability considerations into core business operations and decision-making processes.

3. Focus on sustainable finance: There is a growing interest in sustainable finance in the GCC, including green bonds, sustainabilitylinked loans, and other forms of sustainable finance. CSOs are playing a key role in guiding organisations towards sustainable finance options and ensuring that sustainability considerations are integrated into investment decisions.

4. Regulatory frameworks: In recent years, several GCC countries have introduced regulatory frameworks aimed at promoting sustainability and ESG reporting. Bahrain introduced a voluntary ESG reporting guideline for listed companies in 2020. CSOs are playing a key role in ensuring compliance with these regulations and in developing comprehensive ESG strategies that go beyond mere compliance. The infographic below illustrates the timeline of the key milestones:

5. Focus on social sustainability: While environmental sustainability is a key focus for many CSOs in the GCC, there is also a growing emphasis on social sustainability. This includes issues such as labour rights, diversity and inclusion, and community engagement. CSOs are working to ensure that organisations contribute to the social development of the region.

The rise of the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) is a clear indication of the growing importance

of sustainability in today’s business landscape. As organisations across the globe face increasing pressure to address sustainability issues, CSOs will play a critical role in driving these efforts. While the role is still relatively new, it has already become a vital part of the corporate landscape, and its importance is only set to grow in the years ahead; therefore, it’s essential to groom and grow the right talents that can handle this role with extreme integrity and professionalism.

It’s playtime!

Although

It may look frivolous to us, but play really helps our kids learn valuable lessons, test out roles and figure out their place in the world. As a parent, you can foster playtime in ways that can make it even more beneficial for your children’s developing brains and social skills.

Here are a few steps to making the most of it:

Use spatial language

Remember the last time you tried to assemble some IKEA furniture? That is a test of your spatial skills. If you want your kids to develop better spatial skills, play is a perfect way to start. Building blocks, construction sets and magnetic tiles are classic toys that still work best for developing spatial skills. The key, however, is guidance from adults. Using words like ‘over’, ‘under’ and ‘next to’ will help your kids pick up on directionality and spatial understanding.

Let them (and their imaginations) take the lead

Stick with the basics

In our age of technology, classic toys like blocks, dolls, tools and books may seem old fashioned. There are no electronics, beeps, lights or touch screens. For kids, however, classic toys are like brain food. These toys are classic for a reason—they are open-ended.

Yes, we are the parents and we technically know more than our kids, but when it comes to play, they are the experts. Besides providing boundaries to ensure safety, we should try to allow their imaginations lead their play in the direction that they want it to go in.

For parents that can be a challenge—we think we need to make it more fun or educational, but kids generally have an idea of the type of play that interests them the most. In fact, research backs this up, too. Studies indicate that children whose parents follow their lead and pace in playtime developed better cognitive skills, such as mental flexibility and controlling impulses.

This means that kids have to use their brain power and imagination to create new ways of playing with these toys each time they use them. Beeps and lights are fun, but if that is all a toy can do, the novelty will wear off quickly. Classic toys have longevity and brain-building power because they can be made into anything.

There are real language-learning differences too. Although research is new in this area, early studies show that infants vocalise less when playing with electronic toys compared to classic toys or books. Relatedly, adults tend to talk to infants less while they are playing with electronic toys, rather than classic toys. This is important, of course, because the number of words children hear is related directly to their language development.

Lifestyle | opinion Womant hismonth.com 80 Jul 2023
there has been a big push toward academics for young children in recent years, research continues to show that play is really the engine for learning among our little ones. Our parenting columnist, Ouiam El Hassani, tells us how to make playtime more beneficial.

Don’t be afraid to label and repeat

If you are a parent to a toddler, you know that repetition is a big part of your life. Your child probably wants to hear the same story every day, play with the same toy and maybe even wear the same shirt. They really aren’t just trying to annoy you. Underneath all the repetition is a brain hard at work figuring out the world. Research tells us that the same repetition in language development works, too. Kids whose parents use more words and repeat words tend to learn more language by the age of two than children of parents who do not.

Let the outdoors be their playmate

Most of us know that kids enjoy the outdoors, but kids also physiologically need the outdoors. The benefits for both brain and body are endless. In the outdoors, kids practice their gross motor skills, their eyes adjust to differing dimensions and their brains come alive with questions and insights about textures, water and light.

Playing with your kids doesn’t have to be pre-planned or Pinterest-worthy. With a little guidance, even the simplest playtime can help them learn and bond with you.

Situated along the Canada-US border, Niagara Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in the world. The water from Lake Erie flows into Lake Ontario over these massive waterfalls, known for the great quantity of water that is constantly tumbling over the vertical drop. Niagara Falls is actually a set of three falls: It consists of the largest section, known as Horseshoe Falls, with a drop of 187 feet; a second section on the American side of the river, known as the American Falls, with a drop of 89 feet; and a much thinner section located next to the American Falls, known as Bridal Veil Falls, with a drop of 78 feet.

With dramatic peaks and pristine lakes, Yellowstone National Park, mostly in Wyoming, is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Fun fact: it was America’s first national park and is bigger than Rhode Island! Multicoloured pools swirl around hot springs; verdant forests weave past expansive meadows and volatile geysers launch streams of steaming water toward the sky. With so much unspoiled natural beauty, it’s no wonder why everyone suspected John Colter (a scout for explorers Lewis and Clark) was embellishing when he first described Yellowstone’s geothermal curiosities in 1807. While you traverse its 3,000-plus square miles of mountains, canyons, geysers and waterfalls, be prepared to share the trails with permanent residents like buffalo, elk and sometimes even grizzlies.

GREAT EXPEDITIONS

PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

Millions of people come to this Sierra Nevada wilderness each year to see jagged peaks, glaciers, lush meadows and some of the world’s tallest waterfalls. Spanning 1,200 square miles, Yosemite offers activities ranging from child-friendly to extreme. Massive granite slopes like Half Dome and El Capitan dominate the landscape, taunting rock climbers. Paddlers dip into lakes and rivers, drivers cruise the dramatic Tioga Road, and day hikers walk by sequoias and canyons. Backpackers take to the rugged John Muir trail, named for the writer who helped create the park in 1890.

The legendary Pacific Coast Highway was first started in the 1930s, and remains a marvel of human effort that hugs over 900km of California’s rugged and beautiful coastlines. It is one of the most astoundingly scenic roads in the world, meant to be traversed slowly, while gasping at the mountains, towering trees, expansive beaches and endless sky. It also affords travellers an unparalleled opportunity to dip into all the character California has to offer: pioneer outposts, surfing villages, farm-fresh foods, local wine, roadside kitsch, Hollywood glitz and bohemia.

The United States is a diverse, beautiful country with a multitude of climates and landscapes. The most popular tourist hotspots are already well-established, an inescapable consequence of popular culture. Therefore, we’ve decided to shift attention away from iconic landmarks and cities and instead feature a selection of some of the finest natural hotspots for those wanting a leisurely hike or a breath-taking view.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

Rocky Mountain National Park in northern Colorado encompasses 415 square miles of breath-taking, protected mountain wilderness. With more than 300 miles of trails, panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks, picturesque meadows, valleys and meandering rivers, not to mention Trail Ridge Road (the highest continuous paved road in the United States, hitting 12,183ft in elevation), the choose-your-own-adventure options are endless. Hike it, bike it, fish it, climb it, drive it, camp it, photograph it … or all of the above.

GRAND CANYON

Okay, we admit, you might have heard of this one. After all, this incredible natural attraction is one of the most visited places in the United States. Carved out by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon cuts deep into the landscape, creating dramatic cliff walls and ledges. Visitors standing on the rim of the canyon can see down to the canyon floor a mile below, and look out over the ridges and cliffs that run as far as the eye can see.

HAWAI’I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Visit Hawai’i Volcanoes

National Park for a chance to get up close and personal with two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. The latter continually erupts, which visitors can witness from multiple points in the park, including Crater Rim Drive and the famous Chain of Craters Road. The scenic lookout offers expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and the ancient village of Kealakomo.

ARCHES NATIONAL PARK

Located north of Moab, Utah, Arches National Park is so named for the 2,000 windsculpted sandstone arches gracing the area – the largest such concentration in the world. The most famous of these is the iconic 52ft-tall Delicate Arch, whose image can be seen on Utah license plates, but Arches will amaze you with its sheer range of soaring pinnacles, massive rock fins and giant balanced rocks. Arches is also one of the few national parks where many of the top formations can be seen from the comfort of your car – perfect for those who want the sights without the sweat.

Progress not perfection

Recently, I found myself spiralling. Something that I did innocently lead to an uncomfortable conversation with people in my life. I was upset by the interaction and responded accordingly. Despite all of the parties involved coming from a good place, I found myself reverting to old habits: catastrophising, getting upset, and working myself up and most importantly not giving myself my dues. All the things I have been working hard at to rectify and change.

It got me thinking about progress versus perfection. In our healing journeys we often find that we may get triggered or worked up and revert to the same old habits that exhausted us, that send us spiralling away from the good habits we’ve tried to form.

Also, when we are trying to work on our best selves mentally and emotionally, we end up creating such high expectations of ourselves

that when we revert and slip into old habits, we can be so hard on ourselves but also feel like going back to the old way of doing things is the right way. Going back to old habits is normal, human behaviour is moulded on safety and as I recently discovered in an article by Psychology Today, we easily slip back into our old habits when we’re tired and stressed because old habits provide a sense of comfort! The article further states: “Since safety is the mammal brain’s main goal, it constantly tracks potential dangers and prefers us to stick to our current habits because they have resulted in our survival up to this point.” So literally, our brains are helping us to stay “safe”.

When we are in the midst of doing what comes naturally to us, we also forget about the small steps we take in these moments to do better. I totally overlooked that my choice of words had changed when expressing myself. I didn’t

realise I waited to respond to the situation. I totally missed that I reflected on what I wanted to say before it came flying out of my mouth. I didn’t realise that I didn’t dwell on what had just transpired but moved on quickly and let it go, except only to draw on the experience for this column of course!

My old habit is to be so hard on myself that I immediately forgot all the steps I had taken to better myself. I forget that healing is a continuous journey and very importantly it is not happening in a straight line. It happens in stages, sometimes we go backward, sometimes we go forwards and hey, sometimes we even stand still in our journey.

So, being triggered and reverting to what feels natural to us is fine. But chances are you’ve reverted with a few changes that you’ve not noticed. To that I say progress and not perfection.

Farrah Saville explains why healing is not linear and accepts that slipping into our old ways is just our brain’s way of trying to protect itself.

What’s the achievement you are most proud of?

My career progression despite all the obstacles I went through.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Complete this sentence: On my day off I... would rather spend quality time with my kids, Maryam and Ahmed.

InHerShoes

If you were to Google the meaning of ‘Fatema’ your results would state that it means ‘perfection’. Amakin HR and Admin Manager, Fatema Alkhan, believes that everyone has qualities that reflect the meaning of his or her name, but even then, perfection does not exist… even though we seek it. Fatema is a strong and independent person and says: “Some would call me a fighter who wants to make a difference seeking perfection in this strange world.” Let’s take a walk in her shoes!

Here are two that played a significant role in making me who I am today. When I was young, my dad said to me: “Education is not about studying and obtaining certificates, it’s about knowledge and knowledge comes through reading.” Since then, I have been reading endlessly; even if I’m against the idea of a book, I’d still want to know what it’s about.

Then in 2017, I read a quote by UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler, HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum which I believe in. He said: “Who does not change is changed by circumstances and retreats, who does not develop is not awaited for by the world’s express train, and who does not learn the passing of days will only increase his backwardness.” Since then, I made sure I always pursue a better version of myself.

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

My mum’s Koshari.

Something about you that most people don’t know: I would still want to keep this to myself. Yet, I will share that I cry over movies and even kids’ cartoons sometimes. What was the name of your first pet and what made it special?

Beauty, she was a Pakistani dog that was brought to us by one of my father’s friends and for some reason I was so attached to her although in a very short period she was gone.

Your preferred holiday destination?

Rome without a doubt! And I’ll make sure I keep dropping a coin in the fountain whenever I go there so I would go back again.
