Bahraini Women’s Day

Celebrating Bahraini Women

On the occasion of Bahraini Women’s Day, Woman This Month pauses to reflect on and thank the many inspirational women who have paved the way for the Kingdom’s young girls to feel part of a progressive society where their rights are respected, and their work admired and appreciated.

H

RH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, is said to be one of the most important figures when it comes to the progress and development of Bahraini women, having established the Supreme Council for Women (SCW) and sits as its current President. Launched by HRH Princess Sabeeka in 2008, the first Bahraini Women’s Day celebrated 80 years since the start of formal education for women in the Kingdom. According to reports, women’s education started in Bahrain in 1928, making the Kingdom of Bahrain the first Gulf country to have female education. Marked on December 1 every year, the occasion celebrates Bahraini women and their consistent contributions to shaping the identity of a modern, forward-thinking society that seeks to preserve the principles of equality in the national development process. In a statement marking Bahraini Women’s Day, HM King Hamad commended the role played by the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), led by HRH Princess Sabeeka, in advancing women in the kingdom.

Bahraini Women’s Day

“Throughout its institutional work, the SCW has been able to demonstrate our vision on the advancement and progress of Bahraini women. It has become, as we wished, one of the results of our comprehensive development process that has paved the way for Bahraini women, as full-fledged citizens. Today, thanks to those efforts, women are an integral component in the process of modernisation and development, becoming more aware of their rights, in thought and practice, and capable of assuming their responsibilities with competence and confidence for Bahrain’s progress,” says HM the King. Whilst chairing the SCW’s eighth session recently, HRH Princess Sabeeka expressed her utmost pride in HM King Hamad’s unlimited support of the SCW’s work, noting that the SCW has been keen to adopt the best institutional practices and activate the roles assigned to it as a national mechanism entrusted with meeting the kingdom’s aspirations regarding the advancement of Bahraini women. “This royal support is a source of pride and honour. It is also an impetus to redouble efforts to attain more achievements that support Bahrain’s comprehensive development process,” she said.

HRH Princess Sabeeka expressed thanks and appreciation to the government, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for its continuous support and fruitful cooperation with the SCW to activate its work strategies, commensurate with its priorities, which has reflected positively on the SCW’s contribution to the national economy and role in improving the quality of the services it delivers.

social, political and cultural fields. Their visionary efforts have supported and inspired phenomenal development across several sectors including, but not limited to, banking, healthcare, education, retail, media, creative arts and sports. The Woman This Month team would like to wish every one of our readers a very happy Bahraini Women’s Day!

Furthermore, she praised the distinguished level of the SCW’s cooperation with state institutions and sectors, highlighting the kingdom’s advanced experience in implementing policies promoting gender balance in the national development process. Notably, to mark the stellar achievements of Bahraini women, HRH Princess Sabeeka unveiled the Athar Monument in December 2022. The monument was the result of a competition organised by the SCW in collaboration with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities in 2017 which invited submissions for a proposed monument celebrating Bahraini women. Bahraini women are known for their significant achievements and contributions to economic,

PEOPLE | interview

Women Empowered

Officially opened in 2007, the Aisha Yateem Family Counselling Centre has helped and protected more than a thousand women in Bahrain by offering social, psychological and legal family counselling in the strictest of confidence. Kristian Harrison visited the organisation to find out more about its amazing work in the Kingdom.

T

he genesis of the Centre’s founding actually began in 1955 when Aisha Yateem, who the Centre is named after, started the Bahrain Young Ladies Association out of her desire to improve education and the lives of women in Bahrain. Before she passed away, she had a deep desire to establish a location to help abused woman, which came to fruition thanks to her daughter-in-law, Shirley Yateem. As a mother of four, Shirley Yateem has inherently been a women’s advocate, especially, as she says, in a region where men have more cultural advantages. “It was an incredibly proud moment when HRH Shaikha Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa opened our Centre in 2007,” explains Mrs. Yateem. “Since then, we have continued to operate and help more than a thousand families in Bahrain and we have gone from strength to strength, earning the trust of women who previously were perhaps too scared or intimidated to reach out to us.

“Of course, there are certain situations which cannot be fixed, and that’s where we also offer extensive and free services to help women in cases where they’d usually have little support. Criteria include violence, prevention from studying or working, abandonment, humiliation, prohibition from disposing of personal money and more cases.

“We are a registered charity and NGO, so we raise money through our thrift shop boutique, our annual bazaar and through regular fundraisers including monthly breakfasts. In fact, we hosted our last one on November 29 and also donated proceeds to the Palestinian cause which is important to us too.” The day-to-day running of the centre falls to its manager, Ms. Jalila Ismail Alkhabbaz, who is also a highly-trained counsellor and psychologist. “The most common reasons for women visiting the centre are infidelity and psychological problems among couples and families, as well as the deteriorating economic situation and family intervention,” explains Ms. Alkhabbaz. “Marriage counselling is one of our most important services, because in the majority of cases, issues can be solved through professional mediation and most issues are actually just stemming from miscommunication.

“Anyone enlisting our services do not have to share any of their private information without consent, and workers cannot obtain any document or record any information in the file without the consent and approval of the person using our service. Needless to say, the Centre does not provide any data or information to any entity or individual unless it obtains an official request from government institutions.” Due to the nature of some cases and their sensitivity, it is not always possible for personal attendance of clients and so the Centre has established a free hotline which is available from 7am to 6pm on weekdays.

PEOPLE | interview This provides immediate counselling to women who cannot reach the Centre with psychological and moral support and the enactment of a safety plan to minimise further incident in violent situations. The Centre has received approximately 1,320 cases of domestic violence to date, but another important aspect of its service is the continued follow-up care. Ms. Alkabbaz explains that 30 percent of cases continue to receive support long after their issues are resolved, and the women who have thrived since receiving help then support each other as a community. One such example is the case of a woman, who wishes to be referred to as Narjes, who joined the interview to discuss her story. “I was in an abusive marriage and was struggling very badly with my mental health, not knowing where to turn,” she reminisces. “I eventually plucked up the courage to come to the Aisha Yateem Centre and ever since my first session with a counsellor, I was so excited just to have someone that would actually listen to me and understand what I was going through.

to pursue a divorce from my abusive husband. I received legal aid to facilitate this, and now I am so much happier. I cannot thank the Centre enough for its help, which is still ongoing as I occasionally meet social workers to discuss my progress and attend lectures which are hosted to spread the message to the community. “Not only that, I felt confident enough to return to work and I also tell my colleagues and friends to seek out support if they are going through similar trouble.” Any reader who believes they require the support of the Aisha Yateem Family Counselling Centre can enquire about its free services either through visiting its location in Hamad Town or by calling the hotline on 17 430-488. ALL FOR JUSTICE

PEOPLE | interview

Siddiqa Al-Mawali is a young, vibrant and intelligent lawyer who is making amazing strides in Bahrain as the owner of Al Haq Law and Legal Consultants. She sat down with Kristian Harrison to discuss her professional journey, her inspirations and her future plans to enable more women to establish a career in law. Can you tell us about your educational and professional background? I first realised I wanted to be a lawyer when I was nine years old. I have a younger sister and I always used to defend her in petty arguments, so our father actually called me ‘lawyer’ as a nickname! The passion stuck throughout my teenage years and my parents were amazingly supportive when I told them I wanted to actively pursue it. I eventually graduated with a law degree from the University of Bahrain. I undertook numerous courses to get as much experience as possible across the wide spectrum of law, but I took particular interest in mediation. I believe it’s so important because more cases than any other involve disputes between families and friends which can be solved without needing to go to court. I also receive a lot of cases regarding criminal and labour law, something I am extremely invested in. After graduating, as required by Bahraini law, I had to work under another lawyer and I spent three years in training before being able to pursue my own path, taking cases from small offices before finally establishing my own company.

Why does labour law in particular appeal strongly to you and what is your most memorable case? When people request help regarding their workplace, whether it is because they have been unfairly dismissed or have had their salaries withheld, I truly

98

December 2023

feel compelled to help them. Even for amounts that would be small to many of us, it can mean the difference between having something and having nothing to certain people. This leads into my most memorable case, which was actually really simple. If I told it to another lawyer, they’d laugh about it! One woman came to me after her boss refused to pay her a salary of BD60, telling me she could not fight for it. I told her that no matter how small the amount, you are well within your rights to claim it if it is rightfully yours. We fought the case successfully and she received more than BD100 from the courts, and even though it was arguably the smallest case I’ve ever taken, it was the one I feel most proud of because of how thankful she was that I’d helped her when no one else would.

What advice would you give to young women looking at entering a career in law? Being a female lawyer is a challenge in Bahrain, make no mistake. You have to be on call practically 24 hours a day. However, whatever the difficulty you have on the table, if it’s truly what you want then follow your passion because it is the most rewarding job imaginable.

What are your plans for the future? My initial goal is to transfer Al Haq from an office of law to a company. This will allow it to be bigger and in fact, I already have a deal on the table to open another branch in Abu Dhabi so I hope that I can accomplish this soon.

Anything to add? People have more rights than they think, especially expats from poorer countries who perhaps feel scared or intimidated. I’d love to find a way to educate these people more so that they know they are safe and if problems do arise, they have a legal backup to support them. Conversely, I also strongly believe that employers need education on how to treat their employees better. You can’t take passports or keep salaries, it’s totally against the law, and you have to be accountable.

Introducing

LA NOOR

Bahrainis have long been known for their creative flair which has cemented their position in various artistic fields including music, art, literature and even fashion. This month, Brand Designer and Owner of La Noor by Noor Atelier, Noor AlMaskati, tells Farah Baig about her creative process and the brand.

T

he myriad colours, lush fabrics and elegant cuts of La Noor’s stunning collection have been drawing fashion enthusiasts to the brand’s popup shop at Bahrain City Centre. Being the creative force behind the brand, Ms. AlMaskati’s vision was to create a line that is glamorous, artistic, bold, adventurous, detailed and luxurious. As a child, Ms. AlMaskati showed an interest in creativity and fashion. “I was always creating and designing different things, including clothes for my Barbies!” she reminisces. “The process from the idea to making tech packs to choosing the right fabric to having a final product in your hands is the best thing ever.” Over the years, she has developed her style and now finds inspiration through art, culture, architecture, fashion magazines, runway shows and fashion history when designing her collection. “Good construction, appropriate material, fabric choices and a good fit are essential. A good fashion designer must predict what colours, styles and shapes will be popular in the future, but a great fashion design is indeed expected to be elegant and attractive regardless of the era,” she says. “Fashion industry trends revolve in cycles and looks from the past inspire many of today’s hottest trends. There are many iconic designers in the world of fashion and haute couture like Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Ralph Lauren, Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad,” she elaborates. Ms. AlMaskati aims to uplift and empower women by guiding them through fashion. “La Noor is a cutting-edge fashion brand that epitomises the embodiment of female power and strength, while embracing the essence of femininity. We meticulously work on crafting the perfect cuts and selecting the finest fabrics, ensuring our clients feel empowered, elegant and undeniably feminine,” she says. La Noor’s current collection consists of versatile pieces that you can wear in different ways for every occasion aside from classic, essential items for every wardrobe that never go out of style. “Through our innovative designs, La Noor promises to release the inner strength within every woman, empowering them to conquer the world while exuding confidence and grace. The collection is currently available at the boutique and will soon be launched on its online shop too. “I have started expanding regionally by participating in exhibitions. However, it is our dream to see La Noor become a cherished presence in every major boutique, allowing ladies from various corners of the world to experience the transformative power of our designs,” she says. “I am fully aware that the road to global success can be challenging but with the right strategy and approach it’s possible to grow into an international business. Through our dedication to excellence, attention to detail, and commitment to empowering women, we aspire to make La Noor a symbol of sophistication and elegance globally,” she concludes.

Axing Anxiety

OPINION | parenting

Why is separation so difficult and why does it produce so much anxiety? Parenting columnist Ouiam El Hassani shares her tips on how to ease the difficulties of separation with your children.

W

e’ve all been there. It is bedtime and our little ones begin stalling with: “I need some water” or “one more story,” and sometimes: “I’m afraid,” occasionally accompanied by one big crocodile tear rolling down their precious cheek. From their lips to our hearts, these little pleas convey a much larger desire – to keep parents close, routinely disguised as a last-minute request, the last one being the most compelling in telling us why. Until approximately six years of age, young children are not fully developed as separate beings. They are highly dependent on others for caretaking, and staying close is one of the brain’s biggest preoccupations. Young children can be full of frustration, tantrums, resistance and opposition in the face of separation. Alarm in a child often arises at night-time, accumulated from the day and activated by the point of separation that sleep represents. From a parent’s perspective, it can help to remember that if our children didn’t want us close, we wouldn’t be able to take care of them. Being attached is the superglue that binds us to each other and provides a sense of home, comfort and belonging. Attachment is the doorway through which missing and separation anxiety enter. Toddlers and pre-schoolers also come with

108

shyness instincts that make them fickle when it comes to receiving care from others. This is the result of healthy brain development by six months of age, where a child zeroes-in on one primary caretaker. At this time the child will begin to display stranger protest towards others and show a clear preference towards whom they want to be close. The instinct to shy away from strangers is nature’s way of ensuring they follow the people who are responsible for caring for them.

Here are some tips to ease your child’s separation anxiety:

• Don’t battle their behaviour nor increase

separation through discipline. It’s important not to battle against a child’s behaviour from pursuing their parent to the fears that appear at night – these are all just symptoms of the underlying separation problem. If forms of discipline are used that exacerbate the separation, such as time outs or consequences, then a child’s emotions will be more stirred up and their behaviour more difficult to manage.

• We can’t blame young children for

preferring their parents but we can take comfort in knowing they can attach to other people too. Given their strong shyness instincts, it is important that we introduce

them to the people we want to care for them. We can’t leave these relationships up for grabs but must prime it by showing them we sanction the connection. This can include warmly introducing them to each other, pointing out similarities and common interests, and conveying that you like this person and trust them. A child will follow those to whom they are attached, and if you demonstrate that you like the caretaker, they will follow suit with time and patience.

• Tears are part of the brain’s inner workings

to release emotional energy when stirred up. Tears are not a problem, they are the answer when the missing is too much. What is important is to ensure a child has someone they feel comfortable with in sharing their upset, in crying or retreating to for comfort. When they can count on someone to help them emotionally, it will build trust and security with their caretaker and help them adapt to the separation from parents.

• Attachment is one of the most important

forces in the universe that binds us to each other. Our kids want to be with us, and we want to maintain their love. What we can do is put our energy into making it easier to be apart from us by focusing on connection.
