The Belgrade Theatre Trust (Coventry) Ltd is a registered charity (No 219163), so all of the money raised and earned by the theatre is reinvested in the services it provides to the local community.

What we do on our stages Every Season, Hamish Glen our Artistic Director puts together a diverse range of shows to appeal to as many people in the region as possible. Popular touring shows We programme a mix of West End shows such as Blood Brothers and Fame; popular Drama including Brassed Off and Agatha Christie’s hugely popular The Mousetrap; and tribute acts such as Abba Mania and The Magic of Motown. The Classics We also look for excellent companies delivering high quality versions of the classics, such as OperaUpClose who recently brought a new version of La Traviata to Coventry, Moscow Ballet who will be returning with their performance of the classic Swan Lake in March, and Propeller – an internationally acclaimed Shakespeare Company.

The shows we produce ourselves The Belgrade produces its own plays which aim to give Coventry a voice, tell the stories of its history and reflect its internationalism. We source or commission the script, direct and stage the production at our own cost and build our own sets and costumes, keeping this skilled workforce in Coventry. We aim to produce at least six productions each year and are committed to offering a programme that inspires, entertains and enriches lives; such as Coventry’s blitz story One Night in November by Alan Pollock, Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage, Strindberg’s The Father, new play Bomber’s Moon by William Ivory and Sons Without Fathers, an adaptation of Chekhov’s first play. And then of course, there’s our hugely popular annual Pantomime too.

Something for the family We’re keen to introduce young people to a range of quality and popular productions such as Horrible Histories, Peppa Pig and Tom’s Midnight Garden.

Making the Belgrade accessible

The Belgrade Theatre is a national leader in theatrebased education work, which promotes personal development, community cohesion and aids employability.

We ensure as many people as possible can enjoy and access our work. We do this by providing reduced price tickets for families, children, young people and students, people in receipt of benefits and disabled patrons. We also offer a number of free tickets to people aged under 26.

We hold regular writing and acting workshops for over 50s, for those from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds and for young people who are not reaching their potential at school. We offer 10,000 opportunities every year for people to take part in our Community & Education programmes and we take performances to schools which support children in the transition from primary to secondary school. Many theatres across the world use this initiative, called Theatre in Education (TiE), which was invented here at the Belgrade.

We ensure our auditoria are accessible for disabled patrons and offer performances which are captioned, sign language interpreted and audio described to ensure that physical disability is not a barrier to enjoying good theatre.

At age14, Danielle was on a one-way street to personal disaster. Expelled from school for confronting a teacher and in receipt of a youth offending course as a result, she was spiralling out of control. She was caught in the grip of both alcohol abuse and her own violent behaviour and was constantly in trouble with the police.

In a last attempt to help, she was referred to the Belgrade’s Acting Out programme, a performing arts initiative to engage young people who are not fulfilling their potential. It was the start of a new beginning for Danielle, who went on to complete her studies, gain employment and create a credible future for herself.

For families who are facing severe financial hardship or extremely challenging personal circumstances coming to the Theatre is far from a priority. Yet we all know the value of a good night out; spending quality time together, creating positive memories and giving people an escape from the challenges that they face.

Give the Gift of Theatre

Danielle’s Story

Diverse programming We want everyone to feel at home at the Belgrade and source productions that don’t just appeal to our traditional audiences. In June we’ll be hosting a building-wide Mela, The Reduced Height Theatre Company will be staging their production of See How They Run and last season we premiered Asian theatre company, Phizzical’s production of Shakespeare’s Cymbeline.

Community & Education

400

The number of people facing financial hardship who were given free tickets to the Belgrade Pantomime in 2013

Throughout the year we run a programme called Give the Gift of Theatre, where local businesses and individuals can donate to make it possible for families facing such challenging times to be given tickets for selected productions. We work with referral agencies such as Coventry Foodbank to ensure that the tickets reach those that are most in need. At Christmas we also aim to provide a streamed performance of the pantomime which is shown in local hospitals, hospices and nursing homes, making sure that everyone has the chance to see this great festive tradition.
