In the introduction to her 2011 book “Betty & Friends,” she wrote that both her mother and father “were genuine animal nuts, and I am eternally grateful that they have passed much of that passion on to me.” Fueled by that passion, White helped countless animals in myriad ways throughout her life.

As a child, she helped care for pets her parents took in when their former owners could no longer care for them, particularly with the hardships of the Great Depression. Naturally curious, she also loved learning about animals from around the world on visits to zoos. That love only seems to have deepened over the years. She created the 1970s TV series “The Pet Set” (rereleased in 2021 as "Betty White's Pet Set") and began each episode by introducing a pet — then their celebrity owner.

So, in honor of White's 100th birthday, animal advocates of all stripes are singing her praises and wishing her well. “In addition to her legendary status as an actress, comedian, and producer, Betty White has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to helping animals in need, including dedicated support for local shelters and animal welfare endeavors, fiercely promoting and protecting animal interests in her entertainment projects, and personally adopting many rescued animals,” Matt Bershadker, ASPCA president and CEO, told TODAY in an email.

Austin Guinea Pig Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, mice, degus and hedgehogs in the Austin, Texas area. New Texas law will make it a crime to chain dogs up outdoors

Brad Buckley will be speaking at our event on the 18th this month by: Katie Gray Posted: Nov 1, 2021 / 05:19 PM CDT / Updated: Nov 1, 2021 / 05:19 PM CDT LUBBOCK, Texas — Governor Greg Abbott signed a new bill into law October 25 creating tighter restrictions regarding dogs being tied up outdoors. According to the legislation, animals cannot remain outside without shelter during bad weather, including extremely high or low temperatures. Additionally, the new law states animals cannot be restrained by chains or weighted restraints and outlines the proper use of collars. Lubbock Animal Services Director Steven Green said the legislation could save dogs from being mistreated or worse. “We actually have a case this week. We‛re going to municipal court on two dogs that were tethered improperly, and one of them actually died from the situation,” Greene said. Greene said people can underestimate the short and long-term harm of using chains on animals. They can cause sores around the dog‛s neck and down their spine called ‘chain burns.‛ While Lubbock‛s city ordinances have already deemed many of these practices unlawful, Greene said he hopes it allows more consistency and prevents these levels of abuse going forward. “I think the overall aspect is just to make a more responsible pet owner and to help some of these dogs that are tethered improperly,” Greene said. We are so grateful for the service of our nation’s retired Police K-9 and Military Working Dog Heroes that we want to honor them in retirement, and ensure the best quality of life for them, by providing assistance with medical costs, food and end of duty services. We rely on donors like you to fund our project , because there are no public funds for police and military working dogs. We are now working with Congress to change that with the K-9 Hero Act. For the last three years Project K-9 Hero has been working on the K-9 Hero Act in coordination with Congressman Ron Wright and his office. Right now Project K-9 Hero, Congress, and the Senate are gathering support to take this bill to a vote. The K-9 Hero Act was a vision we had at Project K-9 Hero and a vision our Founder, Jason Johnson, had over many years on how we can take funding from the federal government and help give that to non-profits to spend on medical bills for retired federal K-9s. This bill will allow for any military working dog or federal law enforcement K-9s to seek services through non-profits like Project K-9 Hero and allow us as an organization to take in grant money to spend specifically on medical bills for those dogs. This bill will allocate $5,000,000 of federal grant funds each fiscal year from 2021 through 2025. The future of retired working dogs with respect to ownership and provision of medical services is often unclear and the medical treatment required by many former working dogs is significant enough that it creates a hardship for the individuals, often former partners, who take in these canine heroes. At Project K-9 Hero we set in to fill this gap. This bill will help us at Project K-9 Hero free up some of our other donations where we can help spend it on a deputy sheriff dog or a state police dog or a city dog. Not only does it impact our federal community but it will impact our local and state communities as well. Jason Johnson states, “For me it’s a legacy as the Founder of Project K-9 Hero. I want to make sure that the work is being carried on for generations to come. It’s time our government take into consideration that if we’re going to use them and treat them like heroes when they’re on duty and during their service that we're going to treat them the same way in retirement.” We encourage you to reach out to your Senator or Congressman to ask them to support H.R. 5081, The K-9 Hero Act. Heart of Texas Lost and Found Pets/Cribs For Canines HFalcone, a beautiful Great Pyrenees, was recovered after being hit by a car in Georgetown, TX. Picked up by a Good Samaritan, this gentle giant was rushed to an emergency veterinarian in Round Rock. With no microchip, the promise of euthanization at the shelter, and nothing but dead ends in the search for an owner, plus the desperate need for surgery, a plea spread for rescue backing. Michelle Ann from Cribs for Canines and Heart of Texas Lost and Found Pets, with the help of Gail Forrest who volunteers with Great Pyrenees Rescue Society, heard his story from Austin Bulldog Rescue, who were helping spread the word. In a perfect world, every dog on the planet would be living in the comfort of their human’s home; snuggled up on the couch or snoring from their dog bed. However, this isn’t how things are at all. Our team members have witnessed the evil and harsh reality of what dogs endure in this cruel world. They are the voice for these helpless animals and at times also a savior. Our team is comprised of passionate souls that want nothing more than the welfare for the dogs in the community to be treated fairly, kindly, and at the very least humanly. At the very start of 2019, a group of animal rescuers in Waco, TX set out on a mission to help members of the community to take better care of their backyard dogs. With no shelter, these dogs stood helplessly in the rain, bared the wind with no protection, and curled up in a ball in hopes of staying warm at night. They went out searching for used dog houses or igloo shelters, collected old blankets and straw, and gave them to the homeowner at no cost. This act of kindness became a regular thing and within a matter of weeks, donations from various companies, individuals, and groups started pouring in…giving Cribs for Canines enough materials to make 200 dog houses. The intent was to place the houses throughout McLennan County, to dogs in need of shelter. The mission isn’t just protect the dogs. Dog ownership requires a large amount of responsibility : food, water, and shelter. Public laws are in place to prevent dogs from going without but it is often overlooked and ignored. Cribs for Canines want owners to keep their dogs, and by providing them the means to take care of their dogs properly: they keep dogs in good homes, off of the streets, and out of the shelter.

About the Breed

The Croatian Sheepdog is an agile, helpful and humble shepherd dog, self-reliant to his owner, brave and trustworthy. He is the true master of his flock, often running through the back of the herd to get to the point of intervention as soon as possible. Petar Horvat, the bishop of Djakovo, wrote in 1374 that Croats had brought a shepherd dog along on the move to their new land. He referred to the dog as Canis Pastoralis Croaticus'the Croatian Shepherd Dog. The bishop of Djakovo, Peter Bakic also wrote about the Croatian Sheepdog in his 1719 manuscript 'On the Life of the People and Raising of Stock in Djakovo and it's Surroundings in 1719'. He quoted the words written by Bishop Petar in 1374 and, providing his own description of the dog, stated that the Croatian Sheepdog had not changed since the record (from 1374 to 1719) and had not changed in appearance from that described by Bishop Petar in 1374. A systematic selection breeding program was started by the "father of the breed" - veterinarian Prof Dr Stjepan Romic in 1935 with dogs in the territory of Djakovo. After 34 years of work, the breed was recognized by the FCI in 1969.

Bari is a special needs puppy mill rescue still working hard on socialization, human trust and physical attention. Everyone who spends time with Bari grows to love him. TAVISH-If you’re looking for a very loving, calm IG in his middle years, Tavish is your lad. Tavi (also known as Butterbean) is a charmer and whip-smart. He already knows many commands/words and learns more as his foster mom teaches him. Tavi loves a routine and finds it comforting to know what’s happening (and when) as regards to walks, potty breaks and feeding. This is partly the breed and also due to his blindness, caused by cataracts. Please don’t think of Tavi as a “special needs” dog; his foster mom believes he has been blind for quite awhile, since he’s very comfortable with his sight loss. He gets to know his home pretty quickly to make his way around and will zero in on your location when you say, “come!” and clap hands. He’s just a regular dog who happens to be blind.

EMMA ROSE- I'm a chill girl just looking for someone to snuggle with. I love laying outside in the grass just soaking up the sun and am very comfortable with using a supervised doggie door. I'm patient with my hyper foster sister and have never had a single issue with food aggression, even when foster sister tries to steal my treats! Emma Rose has been diagnosed with bladder cancer. She is currently symptom free (we found the mass by chance, during a routine vet visit) and has started treatment. At this time she is expected to have a good quality of life for at least the coming year, if not longer.

WALLACE- Wallace is a sweet boy who has made amazing progress during his time in rescue. He came to us from a puppy mill and was terrified of everything. People were very scary and it took a couple of months before he would willingly let his foster mom pet him. Wallace has discovered the joy of toys and he has become more and more playful. He loves the other dogs in the house and will frequently be seen cuddling with them on a dog bed. While Wallace has made a lot of progress, he is still continuing to grow. When new or confusing situations present themselves, he will get scared and is unsure of how to react. He is looking for a patient and loving home to help him as he continues on his journey, and you will be rewarded with lots of love!

Caring for your pet’s teeth at home It’s estimated that over 80% of dogs and cats over 3 years of age have some form of dental disease. Dental disease causes bad breath (halitosis), inflamed gums and more, and is a painful experience for your pet. It is also a source of infection and can make your pet seriously ill.

Dental disease is preventable in the vast majority of cases. Prevention can be relatively easy to achieve at home. There are many different methods to keep your pet’s teeth ‘pearly white’ and these methods are best started while they are puppies and kittens. Brushing your pet’s teeth daily is the ‘gold standard’ and most thorough method to remove plaque, although we will discuss other measures such as feeding dental diets, playing with chew toys, using rinses, etc. For dogs and cats with existing dental disease, a dental treatment with a scale and polish under general anaesthetic is almost always necessary to return their teeth and gums back into top condition. This will allow us to start a tailored prevention program with a clean mouth and hoping to minimise, or slow down dental disease developing again in the future. Brushing your pet’s teeth Brushing your pet’s teeth daily helps control plaque build up and hence minimise dental disease. Follow our steps below to accustom your pet to this process. Select a toothbrush Choose a soft toothbrush Toddler brushes are great for small dogs and cats Dog and cat toothbrushes are available in vet clinics and pet retail stores Make sure you label your pet’s toothbrush and keep it separate from the family toothbrushes! Select a toothpaste Do not use human toothpaste when brushing your pet’s teeth as your pet may swallow it. Human toothpaste is not designed to be swallowed and has ingredients that can upset your pet’s stomach. Pet toothpaste is often chicken or beef flavoured which may help your pet accept it. Pet toothpaste is also safe if it is swallowed. Sometimes our pets will like the toothpaste too much! In this case we may suggest dipping the toothbrush in an oral rinse instead. Reducing the speed of eating Dogs and cats teeth need vital contact time with dry food when chewing – dry food assists in removal of plaque. Pets that eat their food very fast, i.e. “gobble”, do not have adequate contact time and therefore plaque accumulates. It’s ideal to slow the speed of eating using anti-gulp bowls or dental toys with food placed inside. Consider spreading the food on the floor or for cats and small dogs, or placing food in small muffin trays as opposed to their normal bowls. Kibble size Ensure you have the correct kibble size for the size of your pets mouth. Rinses and gels An array of rinses and gels are available to assist in the reduction of plaque. Dental toys There are some toys available which are again great at encouraging your dog to chew. Some of these toys include the Kong and Gumabone. Toys are a useful addition to a dental hygiene program, however they should not be relied on

Our Story PoundPup and Friends Initiative - PPFI·Wednesday, January 22, 2020· PoundPup originated in 2010, when our founder went to the local “pound” to pick up Polly (that’s her stray photo from the shelter website). Polly was apparently deaf and blind, and had mange. Her prognosis did not seem to be very good, and shelter staff released her free of charge, in hopes that she may have a few good

days in a loving home. Many medical treatments later, Polly emerged healthy and very spunky. This is when PoundPup and Friends founder, Liz Rainey, realized that with proper funding, we could probably save a lot more animals from going to the pound, or getting adopted out of the shelter. An idea was born, but lack of funding soon stopped the program. But the idea lingered in Liz’s head, and on August 17, 2017, she filed the necessary paperwork to get PoundPup and Friends Initiative formally registered as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We want to assist displaced, stray or unwanted pet animals in an effort to keep them out of shelters and avoid euthanasia or exposure to dangerous elements, human or natural. Happy New Year! 2012 is going to be a wonderful year for animals in San Antonio. You may be aware already that the Austin city shelter has gotten to a greater than 90% save rate due largely to the efforts of Austin Pets Alive! The great news is that San Antonio Pets Alive! has already been formed to make San Antonio a No Kill City with an estimated life-saving launch date of 1/19/2012. This new organization will use best practices from many different cities to get to a No Kill San Antonio as fast as possible - which would make us the largest U.S. city to be No Kill! The world has long believed that there are not enough homes for the pets killed in shelters but according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, there are over 100,000 homes available to new pets in San Antonio each year. If we convince just 20% of those homes, through marketing, awareness, and adoption events to adopt a shelter pet instead of purchasing a pet, enough animals will be saved to make San Antonio a No Kill City (where only terminally ill or dangerous animals are euthanized). Currently, the city of San Antonio euthanizes

over 18,000 animals per year, or around 50/day. This is a crisis that needs immediate attention. SAPA will have a laser-like focus on the dogs and cats who are literally hours from euthanasia, and will provide temporary and emergency foster homes, medical aid, and adoption services to make sure they survive. Our first priority will be to save every single puppy and then move on to saving every single kitten, then on to the adults who end up on the euthanasia list. Just like every animal ends up in the shelter through the action of one person, we need for every animal to get out of the shelter alive through the action of individuals like you who all step up to help. It is going to take the San Antonio community to help make this a success! Let’s all make a New Year’s Resolution to save our San Antonio animals! Local Cat rescue ensuring that all unwanted, abused, and abandoned cats in the North Killeen Castle Heights area have a loving place to call home. We started when we came across a stray kitten on our property, he was very shy and sad. We earned his trust and let him in our home. We made him healthy and happy and found him a good home. Soon after another cat showed up skinny and in need of love, so we did the same for her. Next thing we knew we were up to 8 cats, then 10, then we were rescuing every cat we came across. It was our mission to help them all.

Chance

Chance was dumped and we believe he was a bait dog. He had bite marks down his back and ripped ears. Chance is now neutered and UTD on shots, he is also heartworm positive and on heartworm medication. Chance is around 2 years old.

Chocolate

Chocolate is a roughly 9 weeks old. She was surrendered to us. She is UTD on shots, mostly potty trained, very playful, loves children and does great with other dogs and livestock.

Woody’s Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization located in the beautiful Pocono Mountains in Greentown, Pa. Our mission is to provide the best possible long-term care for displaced senior German Shepherds. (Senior being 8 years and older.) We also provide sanctuary for senior German Shepherds with Degenerative Myelopathy which is a disease that affects the spinal cord, resulting in slow progressive hind limb weakness, paralysis, and eventually death. Displaced senior German Shepherds have come to us from as far south as Florida and as far west as California, but we primarily focus on Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. We are a cage-free, home environment on a little over three acres where the senior German Shepherds in our care get 24/7 supervision, the best medical care, high-quality dog food and home-cooked meals, lots of orthopedic dog beds, plenty of short frequent walks, and lots of love and interaction with people and other dogs.
