Welcome to the GREENFLEET Awards 2023 We are delighted you are able join us here at the British Motor Museum in Warwick for the 19th edition of the GREENFLEET Awards. For many years, the GREENFLEET Awards has held its position as the key date in the EV industry calendar. Not only does it afford us the opportunity to thank you for supporting us, but allows us all a chance to celebrate the achievements of the fleet sector, over the last 12 months. Tonight, we showcase innovation by the fleets themselves, the suppliers, the charging & infrastructure providers, the financiers and much more besides. And there is individual recognition with the Fleet Manager of the Year awards, in both the public and private sectors, plus the accolade they’re all after – The EV Champions! Tonight, we celebrate 10 years of the EV Champions and those recognised tonight will join the winners from the previous 9 years in the ‘EV Champions Hall Of Fame’. See pages 36 & 37 to see who they are. Back by popular demand, we once again have the GREENFLEET Vehicle of the Year Award; a hotly contested category recognising the car, van or truck that has made the biggest impact on the UK fleet sector in 2023. So, who will you meet tonight? Along with old friends, new faces and much-missed colleagues, we are delighted to be joined by award-winning comedian Simon Evans. Familiar from TV and radio appearances, as well as for his live tour shows and festival appearances, he is particularly popular on the corporate and after dinner circuit and will be your host for tonight, alongside industry ‘Big Man’, John Curtis! HPaythru Paythru provides innovative, scalable payment services tailored for both Charge Point Operators (CPOs) and EV charging customers. Its “Virtual Terminals” is a solution that empowers CPOs to initiate charging for customers when traditional payment terminals experience downtime. CPOs often suffer significant losses when their contactless terminals fail. An unsuccessful reader transaction means EV drivers cannot initiate charging, and call handlers are typically not authorised to take phone payments. The Virtual Terminal solution comes to the rescue by enabling CPOs to transact for the energy delivered, thus preventing costly “free vend” situations. Most importantly, this ensures that drivers are not left stranded without the charge they need. Paythru has also committed to a comprehensive Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) exercise to evaluate its Scope 3 carbon footprint. This exercise will drive future reductions and include local offsetting schemes. With 14 years of experience in payments, Paythru has advanced its technology to suit the EV space.

HLightfoot Lightfoot’s telematics solution was developed to deliver a wholly new style of fleet management that empowers drivers through positive reinforcement. Lightfoot is proven to reduce CO2 emissions by 15 per cent in petrol and diesel vehicles, by guiding drivers away from aggressive driving habits through real-time feedback. Research from the University of Bath’s Institute of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems found that Lightfoot’s driver coaching technology leads to a fivefold reduction in NOx emissions. Lightfoot’s technology also helps to prevent 45 per cent of vehicle wear and tear, which in turn results in fewer non-exhaust emissions. Features included within Lightfoot’s EV platform consist of an automated charge expense management system; live state of charge monitoring; battery health reports; and automated charge reminders. Last year, Lightfoot helped fleet customers save 29,985 tonnes of CO2 – equivalent to the amount absorbed by a forest of 1,427,857 trees annually.

HPaua Paua’s cutting-edge charging software is helping to drive the evolution of the electric vehicle (EV) charging paradigm. Central to Paua’s strategy was empowering enterprises, like Cinch and Motability, to adopt their white-label EV charging solutions. This involved crafting a tech-savvy platform, amalgamating a vast roaming network with diverse business models. Cinch partnered with Paua to revolutionise the used-EV buying experience by introducing a cohesive charging solution. cinchCharge was designed to simplify EV charging for end-users, merging multiple networks and payment avenues under cinch’s ecosystem. Teaming up with Motability Operations, Paua introduced Motability Go Charge, a single-app payment solution curated for the Motability Scheme clientele, aiming to uplift their public charging network experience. Unveiled in May 2023, Motability Go Charge has received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

HDynamon Dynamon’s new Synthetic Telematics module allows businesses to run a virtual electric fleet, modeling exactly how vehicles will perform in real world conditions. The technology, similar to that used by aerospace manufacturers and part of its ZERO software package, can either take existing telematics data or create its own for commercial vehicle fleets that don’t have the information, or can’t apply it. Using ZERO’s extensive, bespoke database of almost all electric commercial vehicles, fleets can spec exact vehicles, including options such as battery size, tyre choice, weights, optional extras and accessories. Next, they can then create routes, using either existing journeys or by plotting new ones. Synthetic Telematics is game-changing because fleets can now run their entire operation virtually before a wheel even turns for real, avoiding the need for expensive, often anecdotal and limited real world testing.

IT Innovation Award (Continued) HOctopus Electroverse Octopus Electroverse for Business is an innovative management solution for businesses with EV fleets through a new online platform, with customisable reporting functions and access to over 590,000 public chargers on Octopus Electroverse. With over 190 businesses registered in the product’s first quarter, this platform targets and overcomes the typical challenges businesses face when managing an EV fleet. On the Octopus Electroverse for Business platform, businesses have ultimate visibility over their fleet’s charging sessions with the ability to view and download important charging history details all from one dashboard. Reports can be segmented by group or individual driver for further data breakdown. All bills appear in one consolidated invoice. Each assigned RFID charging card (Electrocard) links to the business account so they have complete control over the assignment of charging cards and can assign/ reassign Electrocards to each driver directly from the Octopus Electroverse for Business platform. Electrocards can access over 590,000 public charge points on the Octopus Electroverse network. Fleet drivers can also download Electroverse’s app, which includes access to features like: charger locations and availability, and the ability to start charging sessions from within the app.

HGeotab Latest innovations from Geotab include ‘Active Insights’, which is a free, turn-key intelligence engine leveraging a customer’s fleetgenerated data, together with more than 3.8 million vehicles in the Geotab ecosystem, to act as an ‘AI fleet manager’. As it continues to learn, it proactively identifies opportunities for managers to maximise safety, productivity, and sustainability. By keeping vehicles in optimum condition, it can also improve fuel economy by as much as five to ten per cent. The Data Connector solution integrates with the organisation’s existing business intelligence tools. It features pre-built templates to quickly translate a fleet’s data into impactful insights, while helping to develop customer reporting dashboards. Project G, meanwhile, is an innovative beta solution that harnesses the power of generative AI to transform how Geotab Data Connector customers interact with vehicle data. It lets you ask questions in plain language and receive instant, data-driven insights. By leveraging generative AI, Project G simplifies data analysis and provides a user-friendly experience.

HBridgestone / Webfleet Webfleet – Bridgestone Mobility Solutions’ fleet management platform continues to break new ground to help businesses electrify their fleets. The most recent innovation is a new EV route optimisation solution that helps to maximise fleet productivity and minimise downtime. Businesses can now plan routes for drivers that take account of battery levels, capacity, average energy consumption and charge point locations. The capabilities of the Webfleet Energy Consumption Report have also been transformed. Fleet managers can keep track of the energy usage for every vehicle trip via a data report or visual map. Energy efficiency colour coding for journeys is depicted on a map trace, for an at-a-glance picture. Webfleet OptiDrive driving behaviour data for coasting and constant speed can then be analysed, alongside the energy consumption insights, to improve driver performance. The Webfleet Charger Connection Insight Report helps ensure charging occurs when tariffs are most favourable. The Fleet Electrification Planning Report, meanwhile, draws upon ‘real world’ mileages, and criteria ranging from road types to standstill times to enable fleets to identify the combustion engine vehicles that could be cost-effectively replaced with EV alternatives.

HAssetworks FleetFocus EDGE brings the power of AssetWorks FleetFocus fleet management software anywhere, with a fully responsive design, user interface, and workflow experience improvements. Edge has the ability to transform operations of all sizes and maximises their operational efficiency while helping them meet their sustainability goals. Extensive research revealed that the average workshop consumed approximately 18,840 sheets of paper annually, resulting in the felling of 2.26 trees. Therefore, workshops using EDGE can effectively save 2.2 tons of CO2 a year. The company also plants a tree for each technician who chooses to switch to a tablet using FleetFocus EDGE. Other benefits include digital transportation - where FleetFocus EDGE can access critical fleet data from any device, anywhere, as well as enhanced maintenance planning and efficient asset tracking. Smart Analytics and reporting meanwhile is where EDGE provides robust analytics and reporting capabilities, allowing fleet managers to gain insights into fleet performance and identify areas for improvement.

HTrakm8 Trakm8 Optimisation Algorithm has been used within Sainsbury’s fleet to significantly improve its delivery efficiency performance. Sainsbury’s wanted to address various challenges and offer more flexibility in its delivery time slots, ultimately resulting in increased customer satisfaction. Trakm8 developed and hosted a highly scalable elastic service algorithms for home delivery optimisation which provide end customers with flexible slot booking availability, as well as highly efficient schedule planning for delivery drivers. The key benefits were to significantly reduce last-mile delivery failures, meet customers’ home delivery expectations, and reduce fleet costs and decrease harmful environmental emissions. It also allows for dynamic optimisation: adding or removing deliveries, vehicles, or drivers. Trakm8 exceeded Sainsbury’s initial optimisation performance providing nearly double the anticipated level. Trakm8 achieved a miles per drop efficiency improvement of over 10 per cent resulting in substantial savings in CO2 emissions, fuel consumption, and ultimately costs.

Mobility Provider of the Year HAX AX provides accident aftercare services and intelligent fleet management solutions and has undergone a significant transformation over the past few years to focus green mobility. AX has pioneered the concept of an EV-for-EV guarantee following an accident, this ensures that an EV driver doesn’t need to compromise. It offers this EV promise despite the General Terms of Agreement not accounting for the increased cost of EVs, impacting its margins by over seven per cent, while passing on the benefits to its fleet partners and drivers. To this end, AX has made significant investments in electrifying its fleet, resulting in a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. It has also invested hundreds of thousands of pounds in infrastructure to cater for these vehicles, including charge points. Its ICE car fleet has become increasingly efficient, too. A customer car that is damaged is less efficient than the AX replacement vehicle. Typically, an AX car emits 4.4 per cent less CO2. AX has also published a white paper explaining the need for fleets to accelerate EV adoption and outlining the obstacles businesses may need to overcome.

HEuropcar Europcar Mobility Group UK is committed to maximising carbon reduction and supporting sustainability across business mobility. Its strong manufacturer partnerships have enabled Europcar to continually upgrade the quality and sustainability of its fleet. Over 1,000 fully electric and a further nearly 600 plug-in hybrids are already available to all customer types at reservation; Europcar also actively offers electric vehicles at point of pick up. Setting the right example, 86 per cent of Europcar’s own company car vehicle orders in the past 24 months have been for fully electric and plug-in hybrid. Since 2021 CO2 emissions on employees’ company vehicles have been reduced by 85 per cent compared with the legacy fleet. The Delivery & Collection service using electric cars and bikes has so far taken a total of 141,734 ICE miles off the road in 2023 (up to August), saving an equivalent of 36,000 Kg of CO2. There are now more than 200 EV charge points installed across the Europcar UK network. Europcar was also the first UK rental operator to partner with Zapmap, providing a UK-wide map of electric charging points to help drivers, and a journey cost calculator to help compare the savings of switching to electric.

HCo Wheels Car Club Co Wheels is a social enterprise set up to provide an environmentally friendly, socially just, community-based alternative to car ownership offering low emission, hybrid and fully electric vehicles across 60 locations around the UK. As the largest community interest car club operator, Co Wheels are committed to improving society. Its focus is helping its 30,000 members save money, reduce UK car ownership and create cleaner, greener local communities by making lower impact transport options widely available. Co Wheels is proud to operate over 500 electric, hybrid and fuel-efficient petrol cars across England, Scotland and Wales. Its vehicles emit 54 per cent less than the average privately owned car and its aim to become an entirely green fleet will lower these statistics even further. Its Corporate Fleet Management Car Sharing solution provides a fresh alternative to grey fleet, pool cars and ad-hoc rental vehicles, proven to reduce fleet mobility costs for private organisations.

HHiyacar Hiyacar is a tech company which has developed a versatile vehicle sharing platform. It is the only CoMoUK accredited car club operator allowing both P2P car sharing (Airbnb for cars) and traditional return to base car clubs on the same platform. It is currently allowing 33,000 verified drivers share 2,600 live vehicles. Hiyacar provides a low cost technology solution to allow community car clubs with all the tools to operate a fully automated return to base car club services. Hiyacar also provides Car Club Solutions for new developments, pool car fleet management systems for NHS Trusts, as well as for local authorities. Most recently Hiyacar are working with a London Borough to allow their staff to share their pool cars internally amongst their staff during working hours and then opening them up to the public in evenings, weekends and holidays. This provides the public with affordable access to low emission vehicles as well as providing the Council with an income stream to offset the cost of the vehicles.

Element 2 is also partnering with fuel card provider Radius and its UK Fuels network to enable access to a reliable supply of fuel cell grade hydrogen.

H Gasrec Bio-LNG supplier Gasrec is undertaking a considerable expansion over the next few years, with three new refuelling locations to open before the end of Q1 2024. Earlier this year, the business reported an all-time sales spike for biomethane across the road transport sector, a trend which is expected continue. To ensure it can meet those growing demands, Gasrec has signed a multi-year supply contract with a UKbased LNG wholesaler at Grain LNG. That deal complements the existing long-term agreement with the National Grid, which operates the facility on the Isle of Grain – the largest LNG terminal in Europe. In addition, new agreements have been put in place with two other European LNG terminals – in Dunkirk, France and the Gate terminal in Rotterdam, the Netherlands – to ensure a constant supply of biomethane.

H Fuel Cell Systems Fuel Cell Systems designs, builds and supports electrolyser systems for hydrogen production and storage. For refuelling, it can deliver everything from an emergency-fill mini-dispenser to a fully plumbed-in static station. Fuel Cell Systems’ Mobile Hydrogen Refueller – HyTruck, was present at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, providing a refuelling service for a new generation of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, including the debut of the new BMW iX5 Hydrogen. Fuel Cell Systems also supplied its HyQube Refueller to support the H2 City Gold electric bus at a zero-emission public transport demonstration at the Neat Port Talbot and Swansea area of South Wales. Protium produced the hydrogen from its installation at the University of South Wales Hydrogen Centre.

H Certas Energy Certas Energy HVO is a drop-in alternative diesel made from renewable raw materials and sustainable waste from verified vegetable fats and oils. Certas Energy has switched its own fleet to HVO, and has been featured as a case study in Zemo’s latest Renewable Fuels guide, demonstrating the power of the renewable diesel to decarbonise heavy duty vehicle fleets. Certas Energy is also a Recognised Fuel Supplier under Zemo’s Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme (RFAS). Certas Energy will also provide assistance to Royal Mail with its roll-out of HVO for its HGVs, and has launched a HVO delivery service, to make it easier for businesses.

H Ohme Ohme’s chargers make a difference as they are energy agnostic, work with any energy provider and also any tariff. Ohme chargers are the only EV chargers that work with Octopus Intelligent, the cheapest off-peak electricity tariff in the UK. Ohme’s technology enables drivers to charge their cars when their rate is at its lowest and also when there is the highest level of renewable energy on the grid with the lowest Co2 per kWh. This enables fleet managers not only to save on their running costs but also to have a verified CO2 rating for their fleet which helps with tendering processes. The Ohme software portal can also align with other fleet software from the likes of Allstar and Mina to give the fleet manager a total solution. Eddie Forrester, EDSB fleet manager, said: “The Ohme software portal has been the key to the success of us running these cars, we simply couldn’t have made the switch without it.The directors wanted to ensure that no driver felt out of pocket and Ohme gives us a monthly report of EV use across the whole company.” With only a fifth of EDSB’s fleet having transitioned to electric, Forrester estimate he has already saved around £43,000 a year on fuel savings.

HGV Manufacturer of the Year HDAF Trucks The expansion of production facilities with a new Electric Truck Assembly factory in Eindhoven fired the starting gun on the arrival of DAF Trucks’ 2023. The new plant manufactures the ‘International Truck of the Year 2023’ New Generation DAF XD and XF Electric which has a WLTP range of over 310 miles, and come in 4x2 and 6x2 rigid, and 4x2 tractor forms. The PACCAR e‑drivelines have 170-350kW outputs, with modular battery packs. The smallest has a capacity of 210kWh and offers a range of up to 124 miles, with the largest at 525kWh and over 310 miles. DAF’s e-trucks are also embedded in UK fleets, with the Asset Alliance Group placing an order for 1,500 new models – including at least 75 e-HGVs. There is more reason for DAF to celebrate in 2023, too; an LF Electric driven by Team DAF-Cenex completed the GreenFleet 2023 EV Rally. The 19-tonne DAF e-HGV was seconded from the UK’s Battery Electric Truck Trial (BETT), which now has 20 LF Electrics in service.

HIveco While its eDaily made a splash in the LCV sector, IVECO’s big 2023 news in the heavy truck arena is the announcement that it will produce and market its Heavy-Duty Battery Electric Vehicle (HD BEV) and Heavy-Duty Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (HD FCEV) under its own brand, after IVECO Group’s acquisition of the full and sole ownership of the German company from the former joint venture Nikola IVECO Europe. The HD BEV has a range of up to 310 miles from its 738kWh batteries, with charging power up to 350kW, while the 480kW HD FCEV can travel up to 497 miles on 70kg of hydrogen stored at 700-bar pressure. Away from electrified trucks, German supermarket EDEKA Minden-Hannover has announced plans to replace its diesel fleet of 700 vehicles with IVECO S-WAY LNG trucks to meet its goal of a complete low-CO2 vehicle fleet by 2025. The firm has already ordered 275 S-WAY LNG trucks in 2022 and 2023; these join 80 IVECO LNG trucks already in service.

HMercedes-Benz Trucks UK GREENFLEET’s reigning HGV Manufacturer of the Year, Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK is hoping for a hat-trick of wins in 2023. As the sales and marketing organisation responsible for Daimler Truck products in the UK, Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK (MBTUK) offers electric trucks spanning 4.25 to 44-tonnes. In 2023, MBTUK successfully completed the GREENFLEET EV Rally in the 27-tonne eActros 400 6x2. On day one, the eActros was the only vehicle which didn’t need to stop to charge, the truck travelling 325 miles from Cardiff to Nottingham, with 12 per cent SoC left, thanks to its efficient eAxle. The eActros is also available as a 19-tonne rigid truck, and like the eActos 400 6x2, has been in operation with UK customers for the past year. The Drinks Club operates its eActros 300 from Heathrow, running goods into Central London, and a UK supermarket has taken delivery of a rigid eActros 300 and an articulated eActros 300LS with a gross combination weight of 40-tonnes. 2023 has also seen the World Premiere of the long haul eActros 600, with over 600kWh of battery capacity, and a range of over 310 miles.

HRenault Trucks Just before the turn of 2023, Renault Trucks unveiled its latest E-Tech T and C heavy-duty electric trucks. The first to bear the maker’s updated logo, the new arrivals mean Renault Trucks provides electric mobility for all uses: from a 650kg cargo bike to a 44t e-tractor and construction truck. Vehicles from the E-Tech T family will be supplied to two consortiums selected to receive funding as part of the UK Government’s £200m Zero Emissions Road Freight Demonstration (ZERFD) Programme, which aims to accelerate the uptake of zero emissions HGVs. The eFREIGHT 2030 consortium, led by Voltempo, consists of logistics specialists, high street names and hauliers to demonstrate up to 100 battery electric 40-44 tonne 4x2 and 6x2 tractor units, and a network of 32MW capacity charging locations. Operators adding Renault e-HGVs to fleets in 2023 include the Ashcroft Group and Welch’s Transport, while Tarmac has trialled the UK’s first all-electric concrete mixer.

HScania Swedish truck manufacturer Scania has focused heavily on its BEV truck family in 2023. In March it delivered a 66-tonne, 300kWh, three-axle P 45 e-HGV to the Verdalskalk limestone quarry in Norway, while another Scania electric truck arrived with the Shoprite Group in South Africa. The world’s first all-electric car transporter – a Scania P 25 230kWh with Kässbohrer body and trailer – has also been introduced by German logistics specialist ARS Altmann Automobillogistik. Scania has also announced that it is starting series production of its updated BEV truck family for regional transport. The new e-HGVs have a gross vehicle weight of up to 64 tonnes, new electric drive systems from 270 to 400kW and new batteries with cells from Northvolt. Range is up to a quoted 242 miles. Scania has also begun work on a solar-powered truck, whose electrical propulsion is generated by the vehicle’s own solar cells, sited in a trailer attached to a plug-in hybrid truck/tractor.

HVolvo Trucks Volvo Trucks’ reputation has been built on consistently developing and investing in latest technologies. The flagship and bestselling FH series celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2023, while new gas‑powered Volvo FH and FM models with upgraded 493bhp engines, and a driving range of up to 621 miles, have also been unveiled. The only truck manufacturer in the UK to offer a complete all-electric line-up from 16.7 to 46 tonnes, over 4,300 Volvo e-trucks have been sold globally. Continuing to explore hydrogen mobility, Volvo also completed the first public test of its fuel cell EV truck technology in 2023.

LCV Manufacturer of the Year H Iveco IVECO’s star launch in 2023 is its new eDaily which offers class-leading advantages in towing capability and battery options due to a modular battery set-up. The eDaily is a comprehensive family of panel and window vans, chassis cabs/cowls, and minibuses from 3.5t to 7.2t GVW. A choice of one (37kWh), two (74kWh) or three (111kWh) batteries means an operator can add or remove batteries or swap a unit between vehicles should a vehicle mission change. Official WLTP combined cycle ranges start at 64 miles for the 3.5t, 37kWh single-battery model, through to 186 miles for the 111kWh, three-battery 4.25t variant. Every model includes the eSTART connectivity package for a four-year period, allowing fleet managers to monitor and manage vehicle downtime and plan routes, and precondition batteries. New fleet deals have been signed, one with the Petit Forestier Group, which has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for 2,000 eDaily chassis cabs that will be converted by its subsidiary Lecapitaine.

H Maxus / Harris Automotive Distributors MAXUS (formerly LDV) was relaunched in the UK in January 2016 by Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC). Since then, the brand has established itself as a leader in the LCV sector, following the launch of new zero-emission commercial vehicles, including the all-electric eDELIVER 3 and eDELIVER 9 vans, and most recently, the eDELIVER 7, which targets the 1-tonne payload van sector in the UK. A key focus is providing businesses and fleet managers with sustainable options for their fleet needs. The key to MAXUS’ success is functionality, providing customers with an LCV range that offers significant choice in terms of body styles, size and powertrains. The brand supports each customer, ensuring they’re ready when the time is right to move to electric motoring, providing analysis on the life cost of an EV fleet versus the cost of an existing fleet. In collaboration with LEVL, the MAXUS Intelligence Onboard telematic system offers EV data to empower fleet operators with insights to enhance productivity and safety.

H Mercedes-Benz Vans UK Mercedes-Benz Vans began 2023 by announcing the arrival of the latest eCitan compact panel van. With a WLTP all-electric range of up to 176 miles and rapid DC charging from 10-80 per cent in 35 minutes, Mercedes’ smallest e-LCV is available in panel and crew van variants with a choice of two lengths and Progressive and Premium trim lines. Powered by a 90kW electric motor, and 45kWh battery, the eCitan can carry up to 3.62m3 of cargo. Fleet deals have included entertainment and media company Sky which has purchased 66kWh-battery eVitos for its service vehicle fleet, with further examples of the e-LCV added to the operations of Head-on Electrical, healthy food and lifestyle venture The Key, and Topspeed Couriers. Fully electric Mercedes-Benz eVito Tourer minibuses have also been delivered to Scottish residential school Beannachar. A new version of Mercedes-Benz Vans’ largest e-LCV, the eSprinter has also been announced, with up to 248 miles of range, 56, 81 or 113kWh LFP-chemistry batteries and 14m3 of space. The current model is still popular, however, with FedEx Express Europe adding 23 eSprinters to its UK operations fleet.

H Vauxhall Continuing its success from previous years, Vauxhall remains the UK’s best-selling e-LCV manufacturer in 2023. The mid-sized Vivaro Electric again leads the market, with the compact Combo Electric occupying third place. As of October 2023, nearly one-third (31.7 per cent) of e-LCVs sold in the UK so far in 2023 is a Vauxhall, and the brand is popular with the fleet and private sectors. Vauxhall will be an electric‑only manufacturer from 2028, and parent company Stellantis announced the start of electric vehicle production at the Vauxhall plant in Ellesmere Port in September 2023. Following a £100m investment, the site is the UK’s first EV-only manufacturing plant, building the Opel and Vauxhall Combo Electric, Citroën ë-Berlingo, Fiat E-Doblò, and Peugeot e-Partner vans. In October, as part of the wider Stellantis Pro One van lineup renewal, Vauxhall announced new versions of its complete e‑LCV family with new technology and looks, including the incorporation of Vauxhall’s ‘Vizor’ front grille styling.

H Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Pardoning the pun, the big ‘buzz’ around Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in 2023, was the retro-styled ID Buzz and its ID Buzz Cargo stablemate. With looks that hark back to the Type 2 which first appeared in 1950, the commercial version of the new star VW enjoyed a full order book of over 26,000 units at the end of 2022. Miele in Germany has taken one of the first fleet orders, continuing a partnership which dates back to those first T2s of 70 years ago, while the company’s UK arm took delivery of its liveried and specially customised ID Buzz Cargos in May 2023. Named ‘International Van of the Year 2023’ the ID Buzz Cargo has also joined the fleet of UK luxury tea manufacturer Ringtons. Available in Commerce and Commerce Plus trims, all ID Buzz Cargo e have a 150kW motor and a 77kWh battery for up to 256 miles of range (WLTP), and is supplied on a carbon-neutral basis with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles reducing as many emissions as possible during production and delivery to the customer.

H Renault Pro+ Renault Pro+ has enjoyed a successful 2023. The latest version of the compact Kangoo E-Tech Electric has won numerous industry awards. Capable of carrying up to 4.2m3 of load volume and up to 1,000kg of payload, the electric LCV has a WLTP range of 143 miles and is a well-regarded nameplate in the electric LCV sector. An all‑new Trafic E-Tech Electric van joins the Kangoo. Its 52kWh battery gives a range of up to 149 miles, and its 5.8‑8.9cm3 load volume and 1.1-tonne payload gives Renault an e-LCV in each market segment. A brand-new Master van – with future electric and hydrogen versions – was also unveiled as we went to press.

Fleet Car Manufacturer of the Year

SPONSORED BY LOOKERS VEHICLE SOLUTIONS

H BMW BMW’s biggest 2023 story is arguably the arrival of the all-electric version of its 5 Series fleet staple. Available in single-motor eDrive 40 and dual-motor M60 xDrive – as well as plug-in hybrid – variants, the i5 offers up to 356 miles of electric driving range and looks set to carry on the mantle and appeal that BMW’s mid-sized executive car has enjoyed for over five decades. The larger and more luxurious all-electric 7 Series, the i7, has also had a major role to play in BMW Group UK’s fortunes this year, taking over four major industry awards. The company has also added several fleet awards to its trophy cabinet this year – but will it scoop the GreenFleet title, too? – with its broad range of models, including the X1, 3 Series, i4 and 5 Series, taking home the honours. The all-electric i4 strikes at the heartland of the fleet market, and this year a new entry level i4 eDrive 35 model has been launched, the 210kW, 299-mile range saloon adding more fleet appeal.

H Hyundai Striking newcomers have featured heavily in the Hyundai headlines for 2023. The Ioniq 6 is the second of the South Korean company’s next-generation electric vehicles, and uses the same E-GMP platform, 77.4kWh battery and 800V technology as its Ioniq 5 sibling, to give up to 338 miles of all-electric range. The new Kona Electric is another 2023 Hyundai star, and the brand’s new-found avantgarde style and high level of technology has attracted more drivers to Hyundai than ever, the firm reporting a registrations rise of 13.3 per cent year-on‑year in July 2023. The fourth biggest seller of alternatively fuelled vehicles in the UK, Hyundai Motor UK’s business division has also been the recipient of a number of fleet wins, helping claim a market share of 4.88 per cent in the first half of the year. The notable major orders of more than 100 cars have come from building materials supplier Nicholls & Clarke, textile rental company Johnson Supplier Group as well as a landmark deal with Michelin to provide the tyre manufacturer’s UK division with its first-ever electric vehicles.

H Kia Hoping to claim the GREENFLEET Fleet Car of the Year Award for the second time – 2021 marked the first – Kia UK has enjoyed a busy 2023. At the beginning of the year the company reported that it achieved 100,000 annual sales for the first time, with a 6.2 per cent market share in 2022. The popular Ceed, Niro and Sportage models have been refreshed too, and with a 43 per cent electrified share of sales, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full EV models prove a big draw to the brand. That success continued in 2023, with the 50,000-unit electric sales milestone reached in July 2023, the Niro EV and EV6 charting in the UK’s top 10 most popular EVs. In September 2023, Kia UK recorded the most EV sales it has ever achieved in a single month, with 2,972 units sold, beating the previous record set a year earlier by more than 500 units. Kia UK’s most popular fleet model is the Niro EV, and it’s good news for Kia’s European sales, too: in September 2023, the year‑to-date count is up to 447,879 units, a five per cent increase compared to 2022.

H MG Motor 2023 has seen MG Motor UK build on its 2022 GREENFLEET Awards success where it won the hotly contested EV Manufacturer of the Year title, and the company has enjoyed a full programme of activity during the past year. In April 2023, the company announced record first quarter results, and saw itself positioned as the second-best selling electric car manufacturer in the UK. Over 12,000 cars were delivered in March, with the MG4 EV named as the UK’s second best-selling electric car up to April. As in 2022, that model has also played a major role in 2023 for MG Motor UK. Not only has it added even more awards to its already bursting trophy cupboard – most notably the UK Car of the Year 2023 prize – but a new Extended Range version fitted with a 77kWh battery to give up to 323 miles of range has been launched, priced just as aggressively as other variants in the MG4 EV family. Another new version, the 429bhp dual-motor and all-wheel drive MG4 EV XPower gives a credible performance boost, but other cars such as the popular MG5 EV – the UK’s first all-electric estate model – continue to plug away behind the headlines, all of them adding to the continuing success of the rejuvenated MG brand.

The Peugeot e-208 is popular with fleets, and GREENFLEET’s 2021 Vehicle of the Year has received a raft of updates in 2023 to make it even more appealing. Europe’s best-selling electric B-segment car in 2022, the e-208 now has even more striking looks, a new 115kW motor and a 51kWh battery with a WLTP all-electric range of up to 248 miles. The e-208’s e-2008 crossover sister has also benefited from similar improvements, its 54kWh battery giving it an all-electric single charge range of up to 251 miles. The same powertrain also features on the new e-308 C-segment family hatchback, with its range bumped slightly to 257 miles. A brand-new electric version of the e-3008 crossover has also been unveiled, joining revised 3008 and 5008 crossovers, updated plug-in hybrid 508 and 508 SW models, and a plug-in hybrid variant of the new 408 fastback. By 2030, 100 per cent of Peugeot’s vehicle sales in Europe are planned to be electric.

H Vauxhall Vauxhall’s all-electric models have been flying the flag for the brand beloved by many fleet drivers this year. Mirroring the success of its electric light commercials, the Corsa Electric supermini and the Mokka Electric small crossover have both dominated their respective markets in terms of registrations, with both models sitting proudly at the top of their segments for 2023 up to October. That success looks set to continue, with a new version of the Corsa announced, with styling changes, interior upgrades (including a new 10-inch touchscreen) and a new 51kWh battery and 114kW motor on higher trims, claimed to be good for up to 246 miles of WLTP range. A longstanding star of Vauxhall’s fleet range, the Astra gained electric versions in 2023. The hatch and Sports Tourer estate are available with a 114kW motor and 54kWh battery, said to achieve up to 258 miles (WLTP) between charges. From 2024, all Vauxhall cars and vans will be available with a fully electric version, with the brand to become an EV-only maker from 2028.

H Mercedes-Benz Cars Firmly embracing electrification, Mercedes-Benz’s all-electric EQ family of cars now numbers eight models, beginning with the EQA compact SUV, and ending with the EQV MPV. New releases for 2023 include the luxurious EQS SUV, which can officially travel up to 362 miles on a single charge in Business Class trim, thanks to its 108.4kWh battery. Below the EQS, and almost as luxurious, the EQE is also new, and comes in 215 and 300kW guises with an 89kWh battery. Range is up to 334 miles. Changes to the smaller EQA and EQB bring exterior and interior revisions, efficiency updates and the arrival of Plug & Charge charging technology. Plug-in hybrid technology hasn’t been forgotten, either, and the compact A 250 e hatchback and saloon can now be charged with up to 11kW of alternating current. Finally, the model that forms part of the heart of Mercedes’ fleet offering has also been refreshed. The brand-new E-Class family features three fourth-generation plug-in hybrids, all able to travel up to 62 miles on all-electric power.

H Volkswagen The ID EV family has been rolled out by Volkswagen in a seemingly never-ending pace since 2019, and big news stories for the German manufacturer during 2023 have been the launch of an updated version of its all-electric hatchback, the ID 3, revisions to its ID 4 and ID 5 crossovers, and the announcement of the production version of its Tesla Model 3-rivalling ID 7 ‘saloon’. With tweaks to the exterior, better quality – and recycled – materials inside, and revised software that now features over-the-air updates, the ID 3 is much improved. Available with 58kWh and 77kWh batteries, the latter has an official WLTP range of up to 347 miles and 170kW DC fast charging. Similar updates have been applied to the ID 4 and ID 5 with the addition of a new drive unit that has over 200Nm of torque than before. Volkswagen’s flagship electric model, the ID 7, will arrive in early 2024 – followed by an ID 7 Tourer estate model and a bigger 86kWh battery version – promising up to 374 miles of range from its 77kWh battery. Not forgetting its popular electrified fleet models, plug-in hybrid versions of the new Tiguan and Passat Estate have also made headlines for Volkswagen this year, and now feature DC fast-charging.

HBMW Following an increase in sales of fully electric vehicles to 215,755 units (+107.7 per cent) in 2022, the launch of the all-electric i5 tops the German brand’s achievements for 2023. The new executive EV is available in single-motor, rear-wheel drive eDrive 40 and dual-motor, all-wheel drive M60 xDrive models, and can travel up to 356 miles on a single charge (RWD). The i5 is set to carry forward the mantle and appeal that BMW’s mid-sized fleet car has enjoyed for over five decades and is an important model for the brand. Further up the model family, the larger and more luxurious all-electric 7 Series, the i7, has also had a major role to play in BMW Group UK’s fortunes in 2023, winning a quartet of major industry awards. Continuing its fleet focus, the new entry level i4 eDrive 35 has been launched. The 210kW, 299-mile range saloon adds even more fleet appeal to those drivers looking for a dynamic as well as efficient drive. Other new models include the smallest EV that BMW now makes. The iX1 eDrive20 replaces BMW’s trailblazing i3 – production stopped in July 2023 – and builds on the success of the X1 SUV, using a 152kW motor and a 64.7kWh battery to give a WLTP official driving range of up to 296 miles.

HMaxus / Harris Automotive Distributors MAXUS is committed to helping drivers transition to electric driving, through innovation, unparalleled vehicle range, support and education. Distributed in the UK by Harris Group, MAXUS has introduced a full range of premium EVs including the award-winning flagship eDELIVER 3 and eDELIVER 9 electric vans, and most recently the eDELIVER 7, which targets the UK’s 1-tonne payload van sector. In 2022, MAXUS also introduced the T90 EV, the UK’s first electric pickup, as well an all-electric MPV, the MIFA 9, bringing the brand to a new customer base. MAXUS is aware that navigating the switch to electric can be difficult, and has set up a business advice service for fleet managers. Through its local dealership network, MAXUS provides each customer with a guide to make their transition to EVs as seamless as possible. The brand also provides support through subsidies and aftersales, and in August 2023, launched a support programme, offering five-year warranty, a £6,000 conquest programme per vehicle, a free 7kW charger, and an eight-year battery warranty.

HKia Building on the success of 2022 – a year in which the brand achieved 100,000 annual sales for the first time – 2023 has been equally buoyant for Kia. Its biggest new model headline has been the announcement of the EV9, a large seven-seat SUV with daring styling, a 99.8kWh battery pack and a single charge driving range of over 300 miles. Super-fast 800V charging technology means a charge from 10-to-80 per cent takes as little as 24 minutes when the car is plugged into a 350kW high-powered charger. The first ‘Kia EV Day’ has seen concept versions of the smaller EV3 and EV4 revealed, as well as a production version of the EV5. Back to the present, Kia UK has now reached its 50,000-unit electric sales milestone (July 2023), with the Niro EV and EV6 charting in the UK’s top 10 most popular EVs. In September 2023, the brand recorded the most EV sales it has ever achieved in a single month, with 2,972 units finding homes, beating the previous record set a year earlier by more than 500 units.

HPeugeot Peugeot’s all-electric models now number eight, from the e-208 supermini and e308 hatchback, up to the e-Rifter and e-Traveller people carriers. The e-208 has benefited from a large series of revisions in 2023, adding more appeal. A UK fleet favourite, and the best-selling electric B-segment car in Europe during 2022, the 2023 e-208 has an even more head-turning appearance, as well as a new 115kW motor, and a 51kWh battery with an official all-electric range of up to 248 miles. Similar improvements have been added to the e-208’s e-2008 crossover sister, with its new 54kWh battery good for an all-electric WLTP range of up to 251 miles. The same powertrain also features on the new e-308 C-segment hatchback, and 308 SW, and a brand-new electric version of the e-3008 crossover has also been unveiled.

HVauxhall Vauxhall has enjoyed much success in 2023, with both its electric automotive and light commercial families of vehicles performing well. Winner of the 2021 GREENFLEET LCV Manufacturer of the Year, the brand’s Vivaro Electric has proved incredibly popular with fleets. Up to October 2023, the model has been the UK’s most popular electric light commercial, with the smaller Combo Electric sitting just two places below it. The Vauxhall brand as a whole leads the UK’s electric light commercial market, with almost one-third (31.7 per cent) of e-LCVs sold in the UK bearing the well-regarded Griffin badge. Set to arrive in 2024, the company has released details of a new and updated Vivaro featuring Vauxhall’s now trademark ‘Vizor’ front end design and an increased driving range of up to 217 miles (WLTP) from a 75kWh battery – an increase of 12 miles on the current version. There is also a new e-Power Take-Off (e-PTO) unit to power ancillary items. New versions of the Combo Electric and Movano Electric have also been announced with the latter to include a hydrogen fuel cell variant in the near future. Vauxhall’s electric car portfolio has echoed the success of the light commercial range, with the Corsa Electric sitting at the top of the EV supermini charts, and its sister Mokka Electric leading sales in the compact crossover EV segment. New Astra and Astra Sport Tourer models have also broadened Vauxhall’s fleet appeal, and from 2024, the complete family of Vauxhall cars and LCVs will be available with a fully electric version.

HVolvo Trucks Volvo Trucks is a global leader in the commercial vehicle industry with a legacy spanning over 90 years. Founded on principles of safety, quality and care for the environment, it has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation to encourage positive change in the logistics sector. With a relentless commitment to sustainable solutions, Volvo Trucks is working towards 100 per cent of its trucks being fossil-free by 2040 and 70 per cent of its European sales being electric by 2030. Central to this strategy is being first to market with a full range of electric trucks, leading to sales of over 4,300 electric Volvo trucks worldwide to date. Today, it is the only truck manufacturer in the UK to offer a complete all-electric line-up from 16.7 to 46 tonnes, with its portfolio already capable of handling 45 per cent of all goods transported in Europe: Volvo FH Electric, heavy local transport and regional distribution; Volvo FM Electric, regional and inter-city transport; Volvo FMX Electric, cleaner and quieter construction transport; Volvo FE Electric, local & city distribution, plus waste transport; and Volvo FL Electric, local/city distribution. The electric powertrain is based on solutions already pioneered within Volvo Group, which gives the trucks a strong track record for success and dozens of customers across Europe have engaged with Volvo Trucks to kickstart their fleet transition. During 2023, Chivas Brothers, DHL, Fox Group, Nationwide Platforms, Pegasus Skip Hire, and Tesco welcomed electric Volvo trucks in the UK, with over 60 more fleets also placing orders.

HMercedes-Benz Cars Mercedes-Benz’s fully electric EQ family of cars now spans eight models, beginning with the EQA compact SUV, taking in the EQC SUV, EQE and EQS saloons, through to the spacious seven-seat EQV MPV. New releases for 2023 include the luxurious EQS SUV, which can officially travel up to 362 miles on a single charge in Business Class trim, thanks to its 108.4kWh battery. Capable of carrying seven passengers, the EQS SUV is available with 265 or 400kW power outputs, and every model in the EQS SUV family has DC charging capability of up to 200kW. Sitting below the EQS SUV, and almost as luxurious, the EQE SUV has also arrived in the UK during 2023, and comes in 215 and 300kW guises with an 89kWh battery and a range of up to 334 miles. Updates to the smaller EQA and EQB this year bring exterior and interior enhancements and efficiency revisions that boost the EQA SUV’s single charge driving range to up to 347 miles. The arrival of Plug & Charge automated charging technology enables more convenient charging, too. Committed to electrification, since 2022, production at Mercedes‑Benz’s own passenger car plants worldwide has been net carbon neutral, and this includes factories responsible for the batteries. Net-carbon‑neutral production of battery cells is also a key requirement for all Mercedes-Benz’s battery cell partners.

Public Sector Car Fleet of the Year H Norfolk Community Health & Care NHS Trust / Hiyacar Norfolk Community Health & Care NHS Trust (NCH&C), in partnership with Hiyacar, has successfully transitioned to electric vehicles and hybrids within the pool vehicle fleet. This strategic shift has resulted in a substantial reduction in pool vehicle emissions, aligning perfectly with the principles of sustainability and environmental responsibility within the Trust’s Green Plan. Additionally, the partnership has led to a notable reduction in grey fleet emissions. By providing a highly efficient and accessible pool car solution, NCH&C has discouraged the use of employees’ personal vehicles for work-related purposes. This reduction in the reliance on privately owned vehicles has not only contributed to lower emissions but has also improved road safety and compliance with regulatory standards. Norfolk Community Health & Care NHS Trust chose Hiyacar as the technology provider and Knowles Fleet Associates as the vehicle supplier. This partnership facilitated the creation of a fully managed, keyless pool car solution, meticulously tailored to meet the unique needs of NCH&C employees and the patients they serve. Norfolk Community Health & Care NHS Trust has achieved substantial cost savings and witnessed remarkable improvements in operational efficiency and vehicle utilisation. The adoption of the fully managed, keyless pool car solution not only addressed the challenges they previously faced but also empowered NCH&C to enhance the quality of patient care.

H London Ambulance Service NHS Trust London Ambulance Service has taken on a fleet of 35 electric Mustang Mach-E cars, making this the biggest fully electric fleet of Fast Response Units (FRUs) in the UK. The cars have been converted to suit paramedics responding to 999 emergencies. It takes just 40 minutes to charge the Mustang battery to 80 per cent and that allows the car to travel more than 300 miles, which is about ten times further than an ambulance would normally cover on a shift. The blue lights and sirens are powered by a 12-volt battery rather than the car’s drive battery but the Service is fitting solar panels to the cars to make them even more environmentally-friendly. The Mustangs are fitted with a Crew Safety System to help keep clinicians safe. The system includes video cameras, panic buttons and electronic tracking. London Ambulance Service also has 13 plug in hybrid cars, three electric motorcycles and 10 London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) electric vehicles which are used by its teams to travel around London teaching first aid. London Ambulance Service has reached 75 per cent of its target to have EV chargers on all sites by 2028 with over forty 22KW chargers installed this year and are now embarking on installing 20 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers. Its clinical team managers, advanced paramedics, ambulance operations, logistics, wellbeing, elderly fallers, resilience and cleaning teams all have new hybrid or plug in hybrid vehicles. These emit just 23 grams of CO2 per Km and are capable of up to 282 mpg. The Service also has lightweight ambulances and an electric ambulance, along with ten electric vans with range extenders for the resuscitation training service, which are recognised in the Public Sector Commercial Fleet category.

H Police Scotland Police Scotland has 1,025 Ultra Low Emission Vehicles on its fleet, which makes up 30 per cent of the overall fleet. It also has 738 fully electric vehicles and plans are already underway to increase this during 2023/24 financial year. Police Scotland will continue to test and assess new ultra-low emission vehicles coming on to the market to ensure it purchases the correct vehicles that meet the requirements of specific policing needs. Over the past three years, Police Scotland has reduced diesel consumption from 5.7million litres in 2020/21 to 3.8 million litres in 2022/23. This equates to a projected gross reduction in carbon emissions of over 4,000 tCO2e. To date Police Scotland has installed 394 charging outlets completed across 37 sites which consists of fast, rapid and ultra rapid charging units. This facilitates the charging for 1182 electric vehicles. Phase one is likely to see completion by December 2023 providing over 400 charging outlets supporting up to 1,200 EVs.

Public Sector Commercial Fleet of the Year H Nottingham City Council Nottingham City Council (NCC) has been operating a predominantly electric fleet since February 2023 with 243 of 475 vehicles fully electric. The Council’s fleet includes the UK’s first fully electric sweeper, cage tipper and minibus as well as the world’s first fully electric original equipment manufactured refuse collection vehicle (RCV). The electric vehicles in Nottingham’s fleet have proven their worth: over £1 million being saved each year in fuel and maintenance, reports from drivers of fewer headaches and reduced stress, 1,162 tonnes of CO2 saved each year, a saving in 2023 of £300k according to the Government’s carbon values, improved productivity resulting from the instant torque delivered and citizens complimenting the quieter vehicles operating in their streets. At its Eastcroft Depot, the council has fitted 40 bi-directional charge points, 138kWp of solar panels, 720kWh battery storage (made from 48 second-life Renault Kangoo batteries), a 2MW substation and 84 Nissan EVs. The fleet charges off-peak and the depot runs from the stored energy in the battery storage during the day, with an estimated saving £130,000 p/a.

H Falkirk Council Falkirk Council is committed to decarbonising its fleet and has made a substantial investment in its vehicle replacement programme to achieve this. As well as replacing cars, the council is focussing on the higher polluting vehicles in its commercial fleet. This involves introducing EVs into its frontline services such as its Building Maintenance fleet where it has made a large amount of these changes. The users of this fleet consist of joiners, plumbers, electricians; trades that traditionally use diesel vans. The commercial fleet in this section consists of 143 vehicles and consists of large vans, small vans and tippers. So far the council has focussed on the large vans as this makes up the majority of the fleet (109) and just over 50 per cent of these are now electric (55). On average the vehicles replaced were using approx. 1,500 litres of fuel per year, providing a CO2 saving of 4,000kg per vehicle. This provides a current saving of 220tCo2 per year from these vehicles. Due to this success, the council is also rolling out EVs in other departments. In total the council has 70 electric vans out of a total of 172 so it is approaching almost 50 per cent across the fleet.

H Westminster City Council Westminster City Council (WCC) adopts a variety of alternative fuel technologies for its waste, cleansing, and recycling fleet. These include testing compressed natural gas (CNG), hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), and hydrogen, as well as upcycling old diesel trucks to fully electric vehicles and securing a large fleet of OEM full electric trucks. In 2023, Westminster City Council launched the UK’s first large fully electric depot with highly sophisticated smart power balancing charging infrastructure for a fleet of 45, 27-tonne electric trucks and 15 LGV’s. The power for the depot to charge these large electric trucks is procured from an energy from waste plant (EfW), where Westminster’s non-recyclable waste is incinerated to generate power via a private power purchase agreement. This model has no impact on the already congested inner London power grid and saves over 2,600 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year which is equal to removing over 1300 cars off the streets. WCC has also improved the efficiency of its fleet by having smart route planners on board. This includes measures such as optimizing routes, using lighter vehicles, replace large trucks with small EV vehicles from congested and areas and reducing vehicles idle time.

H London Ambulance Service NHS Trust Ambulances are the core vehicles in London Ambulance Service’s fleet with over 500 operating in London covering up to 50,000 miles per annum. The ambulances currently weigh five tons and are diesel powered. Following a significant investment and huge amount of innovation, London Ambulance Service (LAS) has reduced the weight down to 3.5 tons, saving 30 per cent of the exhaust emissions across 128 new vehicles. It has now taken this a step further and have just got its first fully electric ambulance from an OEM, a world first! This is years ahead of market expectations and will pave the way for zero emission ambulances across the UK with a number of Trusts having now ordered the vehicle LAS developed. LAS has three more being delivered and when proven, are planning to buy these at scale in 2024. The electric ambulances will complement the largest fully electric response fleet in the country and join a fleet line up that now includes a zero emission option for every category. LAS is planning to move from 15 per cent to 50 per cent of the fleet being zero emission by 2028 meaning a further 360 vehicles, of which the majority will be ambulances. Fuel savings are as high as £4,800 per electric car and will be much higher on ambulances. Its resuscitation training service provides crucial training to the public and are currently rolling out a massive child education programme. They have ten electric vans with range extenders but are able to complete their shifts on all electric power alone. H London Borough of Islington In 2019, Islington commissioned the UK Power Network (UKPN) to carry out a feasibility assessment to transition its fleet of 500 vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) including all HGV class vehicles, based at the Waste and Recycling Centre (WRC). The study revealed the need to increase the depot’s network capacity to 3,250 kVA to meet the Council’s aims in electrifying its fleet. Ultimately this feasibility study was subsumed into the wider fleet electrification business case providing the strategic direction for the council’s fleet electrification programme, securing £33m in fleet replacement capital, £6m in EV charger infrastructure and £1.5m GLA Good Growth Funding. Islington capital and GLA funding supported the construction of a first-of-its-kind new substation in the basement of the WRC whilst EVCP installation has been programmed as required across a number of years. To date this is the UK’s largest indoor EV charging facility for a Local Authority owned depot. Completed under budget, it created opportunities for Solar decarbonisation projects, heat pumps, battery storage, V2X trials, EV charging points, and laid the foundation for the council’s net-zero commitments.

Public Sector Fleet Manager of the Year H Edward Yendluri, Westminister City Council Westminster City Councils adopts a variety of alternative fuel technologies for its waste, cleansing, and recycling fleet. These include testing compressed natural gas (CNG), hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), and hydrogen, as well as upcycling old diesel trucks to fully electric vehicles and securing a large fleet of OEM full electric trucks. Edward Yendluri, the contracts manager with fleet management responsibility, has developed and delivered all these innovations and gained industry recognition by winning several national and international awards. Since 2020 to July 2023, Edward has successfully introduced 100 specialist street cleansing electric vehicles and 40 medium electric vehicles and 45 large 27 tonnes electric trucks along with a state-of-the-art smart charging infrastructure into the Westminster waste, recycling and cleansing fleet contract. Savings are over 3,500 tonnes of C02 emissions per annum. Edward led the electric depot project, which has highly sophisticated smart power balancing charging infrastructure for a fleet of 45, 27-tonne electric trucks. The power for the depot is procured from an energy from waste plant (EfW), where Westminster’s non-recyclable waste is incinerated to generate power via a private power purchase agreement. This model has no impact on the already congested inner London power grid and saves over 2,600 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

H Stewart Taylor, Police Scotland Stewart Taylor, fleet manager at Police Scotland, has been instrumental in leading Police Scotland’s large scale fleet decarbonisation project. This includes introducing 1,025 Ultra Low Emission Vehicles on its fleet, which makes up 30 per cent of the overall fleet.

H Chris Demetriou, London Borough of Islington Chris Demetriou is the London Borough of Islington’s head of corporate fleet, transport & accessible community transport. His role includes the decarbonisation of the council’s fleets and its supporting charging infrastructure. Private Sector Car Fleet of the Year

SPONSORED BY EUROPCAR

H Thomas Hardie Commercials Having begun its electrification journey in 2020, Thomas Hardie Commercials is now proud to announce its business car fleet is now fully electric, with 39 electric cars now operational, with another electric car due to be delivered in January. The company does not operate a grey fleet, with specific policies prohibiting the use of private vehicles for business purposes. Its five main locations each have four 7kw charge points installed and are available for paid use by customers, visitors, and employees as well as free for company cars. A further two 7kw chargers are available at another smaller depot. Taking Q3 2023 as a comparison with the first quarter when around 50% of the fleet was electrified, Thomas Hardie Commercials has achieved a reduction of 9039 litres of unleaded fuel which, using a conversion factor of two.19352 kgCO2e, has resulted in a reduction of 19.83T CO2 after just three months. As business electric supplies are from 100% REGO-backed renewable sources, and with 70% of charging happening at the workplace, the company is confident that the quoted CO2 figures are close to representing actual reductions. The company also provides a public charge card that provides access to a range of charge point operators, while minimising any personal expenditure. This service also extends to a home charge service whereby it directly pays for charging vehicles.

H Eric Wright Group Alternatively fuelled vehicles account for 87 per cent of Eric Wrights car fleet, with 69 per cent of cars being electric. What’s more, the company’s order bank comprises 84 per cent electric vehicles, 12 per cent PHEVs, two per cent PHEV & two per cent mild hybrid. Regarding its grey fleet policy, all employees are made aware that they are not allowed to carry out any business trips unless they have been cleared to drive by the fleet team. Instead, pool cars are available to book and should be the first option. Starting in early 2023, the company was able to offer a charging facility to all its staff including those that don’t have an entitlement to company cars and may not have off-road parking or a charge point at home. The company has also actively engaged with charge point partners to install charging points with its commercial partner’s sites to aid the transition of its commercial vehicles to EVs when they are operationally viable. Eric Wright has a four-year replacement cycle for cars with powertrain choices of BEV, PHEV, and mild hybrid, with the option to choose ICE powertrains removed. Despite massive supply chain issues, in three years, the company has managed to move from one BEV vehicle to 168 BEVs.

H E.ON UK E.ON UK currently has 620 company cars on its fleet, with 79 per cent of those vehicles now being electric cars. This keeps the company firmly on track for its target of being fully electric by 2025. E.ON UK’s average CO2 across the company car fleet is 19g/km, an 85 per cent reduction in emissions in the three and a half years since the company started its fleet decarbonisation journey. E.ON UK’s leasing partner Lex Autolease has recently confirmed E.ON is their leading corporate company car fleet in terms of the move to an all electric fleet, and has used it as an example to other companies as a best in class model in the transition to Electric vehicles. E.ON has a good numbers of electric vehicle chargers at its sites, and is currently looking to increase these. E.ON UK is also looking to reduce other travel related emissions. In the coming year, it will be looking to introduce the a travel booking system that will allow colleagues to be aware of best solutions to book in the air, rail and even hotel portfolio to reduce their own and E.ON’s business travel CO2 footprint.

Europcar Mobility Group UK & Ireland - There is still much to understand about zero emissions motoring and Europcar Mobility Group UK & Ireland is committed to helping motorists – whether for business or leisure – learn about the differences they can make in real-world conditions. Recognising that there are still barriers to change - vehicle supply, charging infrastructure, driver resistance and impact on productivity to name but a few - Europcar is working with many organisations, supporting their sustainability journeys. We are helping employers understand the full implications of electric and plug-in hybrid motoring with the steady addition of sustainable vehicles to our fleet, enabling our customers to experience EV motoring in real-world conditions, but without having to make a long-term commitment. The Europcar ‘One Sustainable Fleet’ programme is also driving our focus to reduce emissions with a goal to have 20% of our fleet fully EV by 2024 and to have reduced emissions in our fleet globally by 46% by 2030 with 100% of the fleet EV by 2036. And walking the talk, 75% of our own company car vehicle order is EV and 15% hybrid. The average CO2 for this fleet is 17g, compared to 114g 12 months ago. https://www.europcar. co.uk/en-gb

H Evri Last year, Evri brought in 30 new Bio-CNG tractor units, increasing the total to 190 – almost half of its core HGV fleet. Each unit reduces CO2 emissions by up to 95% compared to a diesel alternative – a reduction of 150+ tonnes of CO2 per vehicle and 24,000+ tonnes of CO2 across the entire Bio-CNG fleet annually. The company is trialling two electric HGVs and has also doubled the number of electric vans in service in London, bringing EVs to around 37% of its total van fleet. Evri is also utilising e-cargo bikes.

H Welch’s Transport In 2023, Welch’s Transport has taken on one of the country’s first 19-ton Battery Electric HGVs. This bold move not only reduces their carbon footprint but also demonstrates their commitment to environmental innovation. Adding to this achievement is the installation of a 150-kW charger back which holds the mantle for the only HGV publicly accessible supercharger in the UK, a resource shared with fellow hauliers. The company is also harnessing artificial intelligence to optimize their routes and reduce emissions.

H Nicholls Transport - EH Nicholls Jnr ltd Nicholls Transport has a fleet of 105 trucks, with 42 of these run LNG from biomethane. In the last half of 2022, these vehicles produced over 191 per cent saving on GHG emissions compared to diesel trucks and in the first half of 2023, 142 per cent saving. During this period the company has covered over 1,821,000 kms in its gas trucks, saving circa 3,185 tonnes of CO2. The company has partnered with GasRec to install the only LNG refuelling station in the southeast on its site and is obtaining planning permission for an LNG/CNG/ Electric refuelling station on its site to be open to all hauliers.

H The Royal Mail Royal Mail Group has around 43,000 delivery and collection vans and 4,000 trucks. The company has an environmental plan to reduce the average carbon emissions per parcel and become net zero by 2040. Over the past two years, it has invested significantly in deploying electric vans and charging infrastructure. To date, it has the UK’s largest commercial EV fleet of over 5,000 vehicles across 154 electric delivery and collection units, 22 of which are 100% electrified. Royal Mail is also using bio-CNG and HVO in its trucks.

H Riverford Organic Farmers Riverford operates a fleet of 285 vans, 35 cars and 15 HGVs. The company is currently 33 per cent electrified across the car and van fleet, with 110 electric vehicles on fleet operating across the UK. Riverford has 78 electric vans and 32 electric company cars. Over the next two years as it works towards its fully electric fleet goal, Riverford plans to add more electric vans. To aid weight reduction in its vehicles, Riverford also fitted a 70 per cent recycled composite floor liner, which is lighter and has an improved grip.

H Speedy Asset Services Speedy has completely changed the company car list from diesel vehicles to either electric or PHEVs, and now has chargers at over 20 sites - with plans to have them in every location by the end of 2024. Speedy has a strategic partnership with an electric vehicle builder to supply all its HGVs in the coming years. The company also has a 27t full EV plant bodied vehicle, which is based in its new innovation centre in Milton Keynes. What’s more, Speedy and FHOSS have partnered to enhance the vehicle safety of its fleet.

H Grundon Waste Management In summer 2023, Grundon unveiled its first electric waste collection vehicles, one of which is powered directly by electricity generated from the waste it collects. Demonstrating innovation, Grundon installed a dedicated EV charging point at the side of the EfW. This allows the driver to plug the vehicle in and recharge it with electricity created by the waste deposited. A number of the company’s vehicles are run on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and its company car fleet is 68 per cent electric. Overall, Grundon has reduced its carbon emissions by almost 80 per cent since 2000.

TVS Interfleet took the opportunity to challenge every element of the conventional mixer design, its interaction with the vehicle chassis and its operation. The new e-mixer has no less than seven new patents. Following a three month trial, the e-mixer has already saved over 5 tonnes of CO2 from being released. In full operation, the e-mixer is expected to save 42 tonnes of CO2 annually, with zero emissions per mile compared to 1.55 kg of CO2 per mile for its equivalent.

H Hydrogen Vehicle Systems - HVS HGV Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS)’s HGV, which was revealed in 2023, represents a leap in the commercial vehicle industry’s efforts to decarbonise. The HVS HGV is powered by a state-of-the-art fuel cell stack that distinguishes it from traditional battery-electric alternatives. It boasts a class-leading range of 370 miles, setting a new standard for hydrogen commercial transportation in the UK. HVS’s modularity and technology-agnostic approach ensure that their vehicles do not need to be replaced as frequently. This not only reduces waste but also lowers the total cost of ownership (TCO) for vehicle operators.

H Cenex - taxi wireless charging demonstrator & V2G project Cenex led on the demonstration of the UK’s first electric taxi wireless charging demonstrator (WICET) which showcased both LEVC and Nissan eNV200 taxis wirelessly charging on a taxi rank at Nottingham station whilst waiting for customers. Cenex has also led on the development of Vehicle 2 Grid technology over the last eight years. It has installed the first domestic and commercial V2G units in 2016 and in partnership with OVO, Indra and Nissan delivered the world’s largest V2G demonstrator. V2X is now rapidly commercialising and is ready for CCS based systems in the coming months. Recent innovations include adapting the technology for use on small electric boats and showcasing UK made V2G hardware in India.

Grosvenor Leasing is the UK’s largest privately-owned contract hire and fleet management specialist, having served companies with cars and light commercial vehicle fleets since 1981. H Prohire - ProGreen Van for Savona Foodservice Prohire’s alternative fuels division, ProGreen, has developed a solution that redefines the possibilities of temperature-controlled deliveries. The company has created a bespoke, allelectric van for Savona Foodservice using a Maxus eDeliver 9 chassis. The company embarked on this ambitious journey to design a van that would maintain precise temperature control, whilst carrying the required payload, ensuring the integrity of perishable goods while operating solely on electric power. The result was a state-of-theart system, powered by lithium-ion batteries and advanced power management systems.

H Allstar - Chargepass Allstar Chargepass accelerates the UK’s fleet transition to EVs by making paying for fuel and EV charging simpler at home and on the road. Allstar Chargepass is made possible following the acquisition of Mina by Allstar’s parent company Fleetcor. The solution eliminates the need for separate cards and suppliers, offering customers a single invoice. Allstar’s EV network growth is achieved through 17 partnerships to date with leading EV charge point networks on the market, including GRIDSERVE and InstaVolt. The intuitive portal also gives organisation tools to manage their fleets effectively.

GREENFLEET AWARDS • British Motor Museum • 7th December 2023

GREENFLEET Award for Outstanding Achievement GREENFLEET’s Award for Outstanding Achievement goes to an organisation or individual that has been championing the decarbonisation agenda for years and has made excellent progress in reducing the environmental impact of their fleet, or have shown great innovation in transport decarbonisation. Lorna McAtear, head of fleet at the National Grid, won last year’s GREENFLEET Award for her tireless efforts to decarbonise electric vehicles and share her experience with others. Having worked at several major organisations and led on several electric vehicle related projects, including Optimise Prime, Lorna joined National Grid in August 2019 as fleet manager. In 2021, Mitie won the GREENFLEET Award for Outstanding Achievement for its work with electric vehicles, which began back in 2018. Mitie is now sharing its expertise with other businesses to help them transition to an electric fleet, through its Plan Zero Fleet Transition Service. Other winners include Nissan GB, Milk & More, Zemo Partnership’s Andy Eastlake and Matthew Eastwood from the Energy Saving Trust. Lorna McAtear won the 2022 GREENFLEET Award for Outstanding Achievement

SPONSORED BY OPTIMIZE

At Optimize we specialise in fleet and freight transport optimisation, decarbonisation and transformation, using powerful artificial intelligence to solve the complex challenges our clients face today and in the future. The computer algorithms we have developed deliver productivity breakthroughs for our clients as they seek to decarbonise their businesses, reduce emissions, improve efficiency and maximise the utilisation of their assets. We are leading the charge with this unique and innovative approach, enabling our partners, fleets and end-users, to achieve their net zero targets. As the fleet and freight transport sector embarks on the journey to decarbonise, a new layer of complexity will be added to the transport ecosystem as businesses transition to new vehicle types, energy sources and infrastructure requirements. Our algorithms are sharply focused on optimisation, a significant part of the AI landscape, and consider electrification, infrastructure and fleet transition to produce improved journeys, duty cycles and routes. We have recently rebranded to Optimize from The Algorithm People. It’s the same great team delivering class-leading products. We think the new name better reflects what we do and who we are. Optimize defines our business – it’s not only what we do, it’s who we are.
