A nivel global, vamos dando pasos firmes en favor de la sostenibilidad. Recientemente, el Parlamento Europeo ha dado luz verde a las nuevas normas que impondrán el uso de, al menos, un 70% de combustibles ecológicos a los aviones que operen en aeropuertos de la Unión Europea en el horizonte de 2050.
En Air Europa llevamos tiempo inmersos en la senda hacia la descarbonización del transporte aéreo. Prueba de ello es el reciente acuerdo alcanzado con Cepsa gracias al cual hemos logrado ser las dos primeras compañías en España que establecen un suministro regular de combustible sostenible de aviación (SAF) para una ruta aérea específica. Desde el pasado mes, la compañía energética nos provee de 14,4 toneladas de SAF durante un año para cubrir el primer vuelo mensual Madrid-La Habana.
Por otro lado, acabamos de recibir un importante reconocimiento de SkyTeam, la alianza de aerolíneas de la que Air Europa es miembro, tras participar por segunda vez en el reto The Sustainable Flight Challenge, hemos sido premiados con el galardón Menores emisiones de CO2 en corto radio e igualmente, somos finalistas en otras dos categorías relacionadas con la eficiencia y la sostenibilidad, Mayor reducción de emisiones de CO2 en un vuelo de corto radio y Menores emisiones de CO2 para operaciones en tierra desde un centro propio. Paso a paso, gracias al trabajo del equipo humano que conforma Air Europa y el compromiso, cada vez más fehaciente, del cliente vamos construyendo ese camino firme y real hacia un futuro más verde.

It’s already a reality. Customers are now much more aware when deciding how and where to travel, increasingly taking environmental impact into account.
At a global level, we’re taking concrete steps in favour of sustainability. The European Parliament recently gave the green light to new rules that will impose the use of at least 70% green fuels on aircraft operating at airports across the European Union by 2050.
At Air Europa, we have been on the pathway towards the decarbonisation of air transport for some time. Proof of this is the recent agreement reached with Cepsa, thanks to which we’re now the first two companies in Spain to have set up an agreement for the regular supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for a specific air route. Since last month, the energy company is supplying us with 14.4 tonnes of SAF for one year to cover the first once-a-month flight from Madrid to Havana.
All this, plus we have just received major recognition from SkyTeam, the airline alliance that Air Europa belongs to, after participating for the second time in the The Sustainable Flight Challenge. We have been given the award for “Lowest CO2 emissions in short haul” and we’re also finalists in two other categories related to efficiency and sustainability, Greatest reduction of CO2 emissions in a short haul flight and Lowest CO2 emissions for ground operations in home base.

El inglés es el idioma que se utiliza para la comunicación aérea, pero muchas personas, al llegar a un aeropuerto, desconocen el significado de algunos términos. Casi todos sabemos que la duty free es la tienda libre de impuestos, o que el finger es la pasarela de acceso directo al avión. Otros términos de uso corriente en este ámbito son layover/stopover (referidos a las escalas), shuttle bus (autobús que conecta las terminales de un aeropuerto) o fastline (fila rápida de acceso para pasajeros que puede perder su vuelo).
English is the language used for air communication, but many people when they arrive at an airport are unaware of the meaning of some terms. Almost everyone knows that duty free is the tax free shop, or that the finger is the direct access gateway to the plane. ENG In the 17th century, the Society of Jesus created a group of 30 missionary villages to evangelise the local Aboriginal peoples. One of the best preserved today, and one of the largest, is in Paraguay, the Jesuit mission of Santísima Trinidad del Paraná. Set in Itapúa, it was founded in 1706 with 3,000 Guarani indigenous people and rediscovered two centuries after it was abandoned. It’s an architectural gem, with a Plaza Mayor surrounded by the rest of the mission buildings and a beautiful arcade where workshops and other premises were located. When it was discovered, the only musical scores from the missions were also found. Thirty years ago, in 1993, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Many athletes come to Ibiza to train and compete during the winter months, with the island, along with its landscapes and customs, making it a magnificent setting for sports. En noviembre de 1967 se fundó el Grupo Nuestro Mundo, la primera organización homosexual de Argentina, en medio de la dictadura del general Juan Carlos Onganía. Desde 1992, alrededor de esta fecha, se conmemora este hito con la semana del Orgullo LGTBI en su capital Buenos Aires. ENG Grupo Nuestro Mundo, the first homosexual organization in Argentina, was founded in November 1967 during the dictatorship of General Juan Carlos Onganía. Since 1992, around this date, this milestone has been commemorated with the LGTBI Pride week in the country’s capital, Buenos Aires. From 27 October to 4 November, the city experiences a cultural explosion around the collective (theatre, cinema, concerts, conferences, parties and the like) ending with a mass march through the centre on the last day. More than a million people (1.3 million in 2022) are expected to take to the streets on a route that begins in front of the Casa Rosada in Plaza de Mayo and finishes at the National Congress building. ENG No-one is afraid to run nowadays. This is proved, stride by stride, by all the people who run through the streets of Bilbao every year in one of the most attractive night marathons on the running planet. This year the event is expected to exceed the 11,400 participants from 58 countries who came to run last year’s race. The event takes place on 21 October and runners can register for one of three races: Marathon (42 km), Half Marathon (21 km) and Pirate Race (10 km). The races will start at the San Mamés Stadium and finish at the Guggenheim Museum. El espectacular centro de arte y hogar del escultor michoacano Javier Marín, impulsor de este espacio comunitario de innovación y producción, es un lugar donde la calma y la capacidad de sorprender conviven junto a los creadores que disfrutan de sus residencias artísticas. El propio edificio resulta una obra de arte ya que, con la colaboración del arquitecto Arcadio Marín, Javier Marín fue creando esta “escultura habitable” en Sac Chich, en medio de la selva yucateca, inspirándose en el minimalismo arquitectónico y en las raíces precolombinas. Eso sí, con la naturaleza como gran protagonista, en el centro de Plantel Matilde, se sitúa una pequeña isla que conserva la tierra y los árboles originales del lugar, rodeada de un espejo de agua. ENG Cement, stone, and water. Three simple elements that are the soul of the building that houses Plantel Matilde, in Yucatán (Mexico). The spectacular art centre and home of the Michoacán sculptor Javier Marín, the driving force behind this community space for innovation and production, is a place where calm and the ability to surprise coexist alongside the creators enjoying their artistic residencies there. The building itself is a work of art, since, with the collaboration of the architect Arcadio Marín, Javier Marín created this “inhabitable sculpture” in Sac Chich, in the middle of the Yucatecan jungle, inspired by architectural minimalism and pre-Columbian roots. Recientemente le dejó impresionado el Haven Mountain Retreat en Alpendorf, Austria, “tenía una terraza grande con vistas increíbles a la montaña”. Con amigos quiere ir al clásico Caesars Palace de Las Vegas, “a disfrutar del famoso casino”; y en pareja buscaría algo paradisiaco, como La Reserve 1785 Canggu Beach, en Bali, “hay rutas en moto y surf en la playa”.
Sport and exoticism matter to Danny León when choosing a hotel: “I’d like to sleep at the Atlantis Hotel on the legendary Palm in Dubai, they’ve even got a surf simulator”. He was recently impressed by the Haven Mountain Retreat in Alpendorf, Austria, “it had a huge terrace with incredible mountain views”. He wants to go to the classic Caesars Palace in Las Vegas “to have fun in the casino”. As a couple he’d look for something idyllic, like La Reserve 1785 Canggu Beach in Bali, “they do motorbike outings and surfing on the beach”.
Con apenas nueve años, ya se pasaba las tardes mirando a los niños que practicaban con el monopatín en el skatepark que había frente a su casa. Danny León (Madrid, 1994) cogió uno prestado y desde entonces no se ha bajado de la tabla hasta ser uno de los mejores patinadores españoles del momento, puesto número nueve en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio de 2020. Viajar y los hoteles forman parte de su vida desde hace tiempo: “Siempre busco alguna actividad divertida que hacer en la ciudad que visito y, como no, con mi skate bajo los pies”. Apasionado de la moda, es embajador de la firma Dockers y tiene su propio ritual al llegar a un hotel: “Coloco todo como si fuera mi casa: la ropa colgada en el armario, los productos del baño según cómo lo uso… me gusta sentir que estoy como en mi hogar”. Y como deportista, también se fija en el descanso y “en el desayuno, me encanta comer”.
ENG At barely nine years old, he was already spending his afternoons watching the kids practising their skateboarding skills in the skate park opposite his house. Danny León (Madrid, 1994) borrowed a board and he hasn’t got off it since, riding all the way to becoming one of Spain’s best contemporary skateboarders and ranked ninth at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Travelling and hotels have been part of his life for some time: “I’m always looking for some sort of fun activity to do in the city I’m visiting and, of course, with my skateboard under my feet”. He’s passionate about fashion and is an ambassador for the Dockers brand. He has his own ritual on arrival at a hotel, “I arrange everything just like I would at home: my clothes hanging in the wardrobe, bathroom products set out according to how I use them... I like to feel as if I’m at home”. As an athlete, he also looks after his sleep and “at breakfast, I love to eat”.

En la última edición de su espectáculo más famoso, Oro Viejo, reunió a 26.000 personas bailando durante casi doce horas. DJ Nano (Madrid, 1977) lleva casi tres décadas a los platos, dos con este show que lo ha convertido en un mito de la música electrónica en Europa. Arrancó, como todos los que quieren ser grandes en la cabina, pinchando en Ibiza con su maleta de vinilos, hoy es residente en la gran discoteca de la isla, Pachá.
¿Qué recuerdas de esos primeros años en Ibiza, cuando querías ser DJ? Me fui con 18 años a buscarme la vida allí, a pinchar, y todo ha cambiado mucho. Hoy Ibiza es una gran maquinaria de ocio, es parte de la industria de la música, y ser parte de ese crecimiento me hace sentirme orgulloso.
Pero la música electrónica ya no es cosa únicamente de grandes discotecas… Hace años que se rompieron esas barreras de oscuridad, flash y humo, hoy la electrónica está hasta en los anuncios publicitarios y muchos artistas mainstream también la trabajan. La industria de la música de baile está instaurada en la sociedad.
Tu espectáculo OroViejo es el más importante de esta industria en España, y ha reunido ya a medio millón de personas en dos décadas, ¿eres consciente de lo que has conseguido? Nunca pensé, cuando era más joven y monté este show, que llegaría a ser lo que es hoy. Siempre queríamos hacer fiestas para que la gente se lo pasara bien, ahora es una barbaridad…
Tu profesión te ha obligado a coger muchos aviones… No sé los kilómetros que he hecho en mi vida en avión, llevo 25 años viajando por todo el mundo. Me cuesta incluso saber cuántos aviones he cogido un único verano…
¿Tienes algún ritual? Soy más de ventanilla, para descansar algo mejor apoyado, pues por mi trabajo duermo poco. También suelo llevar crema de manos para un avión y vestir tejidos frescos y ropa holgada en los vuelos largos.
¿Has creado música en un avión? Sí, he trabajado mucho en la producción de mis proyectos y en los vuelos a Asia o Latinoamérica he empezado incluso trabajos discográficos. Hace 10 años, en un avión de camino a Japón, acabé dos canciones que terminé llamando Osaka y Tokio. Además, los aviones son espacios cómodos para trabajar.
ENG At the last edition of his most famous show, Oro Viejo, he brought together 26,000 people to dance for almost twelve hours. DJ Nano (Madrid, 1977) has been on the decks for almost three decades, two of them with this show that has made him an electronic music legend in Europe. Like everyone who wants to make it big in the booth, he started by playing in Ibiza with his suitcase of vinyls, today he's resident DJ in the island's iconic club, Pachá.
What do you remember from those early years in Ibiza, when you wanted to be a DJ? I went out there when I was 18 to work as a DJ and everything has changed a lot. Today Ibiza is a huge leisure machine, it's part of the music industry, and being part of that growth makes me proud.
But electronic music is no longer just a matter of big nightclubs... Those boundaries of darkness, flashing lights and smoke were demolished years ago, nowadays electronic music has even broken through into adverts and many mainstream artists also work with it. The dance music industry is well-established in society.
Your show OroViejo is the industry's biggest in Spain and it has already attracted half a million people in two decades, do you realise what you've achieved? I never thought, back when I was younger and came up with this show, that it would become what it is today. We always
wanted to put on parties for people to have a good time, now there are loads of them...
Your profession means you've had to travel a lot by air... I don't know the kilometres I've done in my life by plane, I've been travelling all over the world for 25 years. It's hard for me to even know how many planes I've taken in a single summer...
Do you have any rituals? I prefer a window set so I can have a nap with a bit more head support, as my work means I don't get much sleep. On board I tend to use hand cream and I wear cool fabrics and loose-fitting clothes on long flights.
Have you ever created music on a plane? Yes, I've done a lot of work on producing my projects and on flights to Asia or Latin America I've even started recording stuff. 10 years ago, on a flight to Japan, I finished two tracks that I ended up calling Osaka and Tokyo. Plus, aircraft are comfortable spaces to work in.

A guide in the south of Gran Canaria
Enclavado en la Punta de Maspalomas, en Gran Canaria, al final de la playa del mismo nombre y junto a las dunas, es uno de los faros más antiguos de estas islas, declarado Bien de Interés Cultural. Lleva funcionando desde 1890 como guía de los barcos que cubrían las rutas entre Europa y América, y su construcción con piedras de sillería, madera y cal sigue llamando a arquitectos e ingenieros que ensalzan su valor patrimonial.
Embedded on the Punta de Maspalomas, in Gran Canaria, standing next to the dunes at the end of the beach of the same name, is one of the islands’ oldest lighthouses, which has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest. It has been operating since 1890 to guide the ships that covered the routes between Europe and America. Its ashlar, wood and limestone construction still attracts architects and engineers who enhance its heritage value.
Ubicado prácticamente dentro del agua, este es uno de los grandes iconos de Fuerteventura. En activo desde finales del siglo XIX (1897), está en uno de los entornos más bellos de la isla, rodeado de escarpadas rocas negras y un oleaje abrumador. De 37 metros de altura, es una excelente guía para los barcos que cruzan el estrecho de la Bocaina. En su interior está el Museo de la Pesca Tradicional, para descubrir uno de los oficios más tradicionales de la isla y donde se narra la historia de la pesca y su evolución.
Located practically in the water, this is one of Fuerteventura’s great icons. In operation since the end of the 19th century (1897), the lighthouse is in one of the most beautiful spots on the island, surrounded by steep black rocks and tremendous waves. At 37 metres high, it makes an excellent guide for boats crossing the Bocaina Strait. Inside is the Museum of Traditional Fishing, where you can discover one of the most traditional trades on the island and hear about the history of fishing and how it has developed here.
Two in one at Cumbre Vieja, in La Palma
Este faro son realmente dos. El más viejo de ellos de principios del siglo XXI sufrió algunos daños durante la erupción del volcán Teneguía y se tuvo que levantar otro a su lado. Situado al sur de la isla de La Palma, en el Parque Natural de Cumbre Vieja, tiene a su alrededor alguna de las áreas más bellas de la zona: las Salinas de Fuencaliente, las playas de Echentive, de Fuente Santa… Tiene un interesante Centro de Interpretación que habla del medio marino y la pesca que lo rodea.
This lighthouse is really two. The oldest of the two lighthouses built in the early 21st century suffered some damage during the Teneguía volcano eruption and another one was built next to it. Set on the south side of the island of La Palma, in the Natural Park of Cumbre Vieja, it’s surrounded by some of the most beautiful land in the area, including Salinas de Fuencaliente, the Echentive beaches and Fuente Santa. The lighthouse has a Interpretation Centre that talks about the marine environment and fishing in the waters around it.
The Atlantic (and Lanzarote) at its feet
Fue levantado en 1856 para señalizar el estrecho de la Bocaina, que separa las islas de Lanzarote y Fuerteventura. Declarado Bien de Interés Cultural en 2002, el viejo faro ha dado el relevo a una nueva infraestructura de reciente construcción que se levanta a su lado. Realizado en sillería basáltica, las leyendas le llevan a la II Guerra Mundial, cuando dicen que fue base de la flota de submarinos alemanes.
The lighthouse was erected in 1856 to mark the Strait of Bocaina, which separates the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. In 2002, the old lighthouse, made of basalt ashlar, was declared a Site of Cultural Interest and a new, recently built infrastructure that stands next to it has now taken over. According to legend it played a significant role in World War II, when apparently it was used by the Germans as the base for its fleet of submarines.
The great monument of El Hierro
Con un gran valor astronómico por su escasa contaminación lumínica, este faro es el edificio civil más importante de la isla de El Hierro desde que se encendiera por primera vez en 1933. Desde el siglo II, en la época del astrólogo griego Ptolomeo, y hasta finales del siglo XIX se escogió este lugar como referencia para señalar el meridiano 0. De estilo racionalista y construido con piedra de canteras de Gran Canaria, alrededor de su torre de 132 metros de altura existe un pequeño puerto que sirve de zona de recreo para los visitantes.
Of high astronomical value due to its low light pollution, this lighthouse has been EL Hierro’s most important civil building since it was lit for the first time in 1933. From the second century, at the time of the Greek astrologer Ptolemy, and until the end of the 19th century, this place was chosen as a reference to mark the the prime meridian. The construction is of a rationalist style and built with stone from the quarries of Gran Canaria. Around its 132-metre tower there is a small harbour used by visitors as a recreational area.

An engineer’s legacy when dusk falls on Gran Canaria
En la localidad de Agüimes, en Gran Canaria, este faro se corona sobre un risco de rocas y azules intensos que protege la Playa de Cabrón, donde practicar submarinismo o, simplemente, disfrutar de sus fondos repletos de caballitos de mar y angelotes. Levantado a finales del siglo XIX, es de estilo clásico, obra del ingeniero canario Juan León y Castillo. En sus faldas hay un afamado restaurante con una terraza que ciega por sus impresionantes vistas al océano.
In Agüimes, Gran Canaria, this lighthouse towers above rocky cliffs and deep blue sea that protect Cabrón Beach, where visitors can go scuba diving or just enjoy looking at the seabed full of seahorses and angel fish. The classic-style construction was erected at the end of the 19th century by the Canarian engineer Juan León y Castillo. At the bottom there is a well-known restaurant with a terrace that is simply dazzling due to the amazing views of the ocean.
En funcionamiento desde 1954, este faro también conocido como de punta Lantailla, fue uno de los últimos levantados con intención de ser habitado en algún momento. En el municipio de Tuineje, en Fuerteventura, desde aquí se guio no solo a barcos, también a muchos de los aviones que atravesaban esta zona durante la guerra del Sidi Ifni, en el Sáhara, en 1957. Un edificio de sillería roja en forma de U, con zócalos y arcos, lo convierte en un patrimonio arquitectónico muy respetable en la zona.
In operation since 1954, this lighthouse, also known as Lantailla Point, was one of the last built with the intention of being inhabited at some time. It’s in the municipality of Tuineje in Fuerteventura and not only guided ships from here but also many of the planes that crossed this area during the Sidi Ifni war in the Sahara, in 1957. The lighthouse is a red U-shaped ashlar building, with baseboards and arches, making it a very respectable part of the area’s architectural heritage.

Desde 1996 está activo uno de los faros más sorprendentes y vanguardistas de Tenerife. De 31 metros de altura y ubicado en la costa norte de la isla, está formado por una torre de base cuadrada y color negro y, en su interior, otra cilíndrica a bandas rojas y blancas. Aunque no se puede visitar, se puede llegar alrededor para disfrutar de unos de los atardeceres más bellos de Puerto de la Cruz.
One of the most surprising and avant-garde lighthouses in Tenerife has been in operation since 1996. Standing 31 meters high and located on the north coast of the island, it consists of a black square tower and inside it another cylindrical tower with red and white bands. Although you can’t visit, you can walk nearby to enjoy some of the most beautiful sunsets in Puerto de la Cruz.
PUNTA DEL HIDALGO
Concrete crystals behind the lava in Tenerife
Uno de los faros contemporáneos levantados en España, en 1994. Situado en San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Tenerife) tiene 50 metros y una estructura formada por prismas de hormigón armado en color blanco y de diferentes tamaños que crean una arquitectura singular, simulando una macla de cristales que emerge de la tierra a través de la lava volcánica. Sin habitar, para llegar hasta la cúspide hay que subir 246 escalones. De él se hizo incluso un sello de Correos.
One of the contemporary lighthouses built in Spain in 1994. Located in San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Tenerife), the lighthouse stands 50 metres high with a structure formed by reinforced concrete prisms in white and in varying sizes that create a unique kind of architecture. The structure simulates a macla of crystals that emerges from the earth through volcanic lava. It’s uninhabited and you have to climb 246 steps to reach the top. A postage stamp was even made with its image.
The loyal defender of La Gomera
Este faro más que centenario –se levantó en 1900– es una versión más pequeña de la torre de Fuencaliente de La Palma. Con 15 metros de altura, está acompañado de un edificio rectangular que fue la antigua casa del farero, una vivienda blanca de mampostería, típica de la arquitectura canaria, con acabados de piedra volcánica en ventanas y puertas. Un temporal dañó el viejo faro y en 1978 se levantó a escasos metros una segunda torre de color blanco y una franja roja, aún en activo.
This lighthouse is more than 100 years old - it was built in 1900 – and is a smaller version of the Fuencaliente tower in La Palma. Standing 15 metres high, it’s accompanied by a rectangular building that used to be the lighthouse keeper’s house, built from white masonry and in the traditional Canarian architectural style with volcanic stone finishes on windows and doors. A storm damaged the old lighthouse and in 1978 a second tower in white with a red strip was built a few metres away.

Situado en un pareja de gran belleza, al noroeste de la isla, esta torre de hormigón pintada a franjas blancas y rojas se levantó en los años setenta junto a otro viejo faro del siglo XIX construido con piedra extraída de las canteras de la isla de La Gomera. Su acceso está restringido, pero hasta llegar a él se tiene que atravesar el Parque rural de Teno, donde está el macizo del mismo nombre, de origen volcánico y rodeado de bosques de laurisilva.
One of the seven lighthouses that light up the island of Tenerife. Standing on the northwest of the island, surrounded by a landscape of great beauty, this concrete tower painted in red and white stripes was erected in the 1970s next to another old lighthouse dating back to the 19th century, built of stone extracted from the quarries on the island of La Gomera. Access is restricted but it can be reached by crossing through Teno Rural Park, of volcanic origin and surrounded by laurel forests.

Hace 20 años, la Unesco declaró Patrimonio de la Humanidad a un conjunto de 4.000 edificios de estilo Bauhaus levantados por un grupo de jóvenes arquitectos judíos que huyeron de la Alemania nazi en la década de 1930. En 1933, con la llegada al poder de los nazis en Alemania, muchos arquitectos judíos se trasladaron a vivir a Israel buscando no solo su seguridad, si no también poder seguir articulando sus ideas urbanísticas de una ya madura Escuela de Bauhaus, fundada años atrás, en 1919, por Walter Gropius. Estos jóvenes formados bajo los planos del maestro alemán, Arieh Sharon, Shmuel Mestechkin, Munio Gitai-Weinraub o Shlomo Bernstein, entre otros, utilizaron las calles de Tel Aviv para levantar una ciudad con 4.000 construcciones siguiendo las directrices del Estilo Internacional. Colores blancos, ventanas herméticas, pilares al aire o líneas rectas para adaptarse al clima desértico y mediterráneo en la llamada Ciudad Blanca de Tel Aviv, que ahora celebra 20 años desde que la Unesco la declarara Patrimonio de la Humanidad “por integrar las tendencias arquitectónicas del Movimiento Moderno en el entorno local”.

“Es la mayor concentración de edificios de estilo Modernista en el mundo; contamos con escuelas, infraestructuras, teatros, cines, viviendas o complejos industriales”, explica Micha Gross, director del Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv. De los 4.000, más de 2.000 están bajo una ley de conservación del ayuntamiento de la ciudad, y muchos de ellos, en manos particulares, “necesitan ser remodelados tal y como estaban en los años 30”, añade.
Tel Aviv ya había sido concebida varias décadas antes, en 1909, como una “ciudad jardín” sobre unas dunas de arena, con un planteamiento urbanístico del pensador británico Patrick Geddes que limitaba el tamaño de los bloques y configuraba las manzanas. Cuando llegaron este grupo de jóvenes arquitectos desde Alemania, se encontraron con una ciudad ordenada pero sin un estilo arquitectónico marcado, así que aplicar el estilo Bauhaus de funcionalidad y materiales sencillos y asequibles fue muy fácil. Pasear hoy por Rothschild Boulevard, o las calles Sheinkin, Dizengoff, Bialik, Mazeh o Kalisher es visitar uno de los centros urbanos de este estilo arquitectónico mejor conservados del mundo.
“Pasó mucho tiempo para que los vecinos de estos edificios, desde del reconocimiento de la Unesco, se dieran cuenta de que vivían en un lugar Patrimonio de la Humanidad, por eso muchos están abandonados”, explica Gross. Pero hoy las cosas están cambiando, “sus habitantes están renovándolos, apreciando el valor de estas construcciones”, añade. El ejemplo son los parques proyectados entre bloque y bloque, repletos de vecinos tomando el fresco, el mejor legado de unos jóvenes arquitectos que no solo quisieron salvar sus vidas, también su manera de entender las ciudades.
ENG In 1933, with the coming to power of the Nazis in Germany, many Jewish architects went to live in Israel, not just for their own safety, but also to continue articulating the urban planning ideas formed in an already mature Bauhaus School founded years earlier in 1919 by Walter Gropius. These young people, who had trained under the plans of German master Arieh Sharon and others including Shmuel Mestechkin, Munio Gitai-Weinraub and Shlomo Bernstein, used the streets of Tel Aviv to build a city with 4,000 buildings following the guidelines of the International Style. They used white colours, airtight windows, bare pillars and straight lines to adapt to the desert and Mediterranean climate in the so-called White City of Tel Aviv. The city is now celebrating 20 years since UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site “for integrating the architectural trends of the Modern Movement into the local environment”.
“It’s the largest concentration of Art Nouveau buildings in the world; we have schools, infrastructure, theatres, cinemas, homes and industrial complexes” explains Micha Gross, director of the Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv. Of the 4,000 buildings, more than 2,000 are protected by a conservation law passed by the City Council and many of them “need to be refurbished to make them just as they were in the 1930s” he adds.
Tel Aviv had already been conceived several decades earlier, in 1909, as a “garden city” built on sand dunes to a master plan designed by British thinker Patrick Geddes that limited the size of neighbourhoods and configured the residential blocks. When this group of young architects arrived from Germany, they found a city that was neat but lacking a distinctive architectural style, making it easy to apply the Bauhaus ethos
of functionality and simple, affordable materials. A stroll along Rothschild Boulevard or along Sheinkin, Dizengoff, Bialik, Mazeh and Kalisher streets today is a tour of one of the world’s best-preserved urban centres in this architectural style.
“It took a long time for the residents of these buildings, since the UNESCO recognition, to realise that they lived in a World Heritage Site, which is why many of them have been neglected” explains Gross. But now things are changing, “the residents are renovating them, appreciating the value of these constructions,” he adds. An example of this is the park areas planned between the blocks, full of neighbours enjoying the cool air, the best legacy of a group of young architects who wanted to save not only their lives but also their way of understanding cities.

For one year, they will operate the first monthly Air Europa Madrid-Havana flight using second-generation biofuel, produced from organic waste and used cooking oils.
Cepsa and Air Europa have established an alliance whereby the energy company will supply 14.4 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to the airline for one year, to cover the first monthly Madrid-Havana flight. This is the first time that two companies in Spain have established a regular supply of this sustainable fuel for a specific air route.
Over the period of collaboration between Cepsa and Air Europa, around 50 tonnes of CO2 emissions will be avoided, the equivalent of planting 575 trees.
Durante un año, cubrirán el primer vuelo mensual de Air Europa Madrid-La Habana con biocombustible de segunda generación, producido a partir de residuos orgánicos y aceites usados de cocina.
Cepsa y Air Europa han sellado una alianza por la que la compañía energética proveerá 14,4 toneladas de combustible sostenible de aviación (SAF) a la aerolínea durante un año para cubrir el primer vuelo mensual Madrid-La Habana. Se trata de la primera vez que dos compañías en España establecen un suministro regular de este combustible sostenible para una ruta aérea específica.
Durante el periodo de colaboración entre Cepsa y Air Europa, se evitará la emisión de cerca de 50 toneladas de CO2, el equivalente a la plantación de 575 árboles.
Los viajes, que contarán con un 2% de SAF en los depósitos de los aviones, servirán como una prueba para adelantarse a los objetivos marcados por la Unión Europea en su iniciativa legislativa ReFuelEU Aviation, desa-
rrollada para impulsar la sostenibilidad en el sector aéreo. Actualmente no existe ninguna obligación de introducción de SAF en los vuelos, pero esta nueva regulación requerirá que las aerolíneas europeas incorporen de manera creciente cantidades de combustible sostenible en los próximos años: un 2% en 2025, 6% en 2030 y 70% en 2050.
Jesús Nuño de la Rosa, CEO de Air Europa, asegura que “este acuerdo da cumplimiento a los compromisos asumidos en materia de sostenibilidad, uno de los ejes vertebrales del Plan Estratégico 2023-2025 de la aerolínea. Asimismo, al emplearse este combustible en la ruta a La Habana, la compañía visibiliza su papel estratégico en la conectividad aérea con América”.
Por su parte, Tobi Pardo, director de Aviación de Cepsa, ha mostrado la satisfacción por este acuerdo: “Es un orgullo colaborar con Air Europa en su apuesta por la descarbonización del transporte aéreo, contribuyendo a que España se convierta en un referente del turismo sostenible”.
The trips, which will feature 2% of SAF in aircraft tanks, will serve as a test run ahead of the targets set by the European Union in its "ReFuelEU Aviation" legislative initiative, developed to boost sustainability in the aviation sector. Currently, there is no obligation to introduce SAF into flights, but this new regulation will require European airlines to incorporate increasing amounts of sustainable fuel over the coming years: 2% by 2025, 6% by 2030 and 70% by 2050.
Jesús Nuño de la Rosa, CEO of Air Europa, assures that "this agreement fulfils the commitments made in terms of sustainability, one of the backbones of the airline's Strategic Plan 2023-2025. Likewise, by using this fuel on the route to Havana, the company is highlighting its strategic role in its air connectivity with the Americas".
For his part, Tobi Pardo, Cepsa's Director of Aviation, expressed the company's satisfaction at reaching such an agreement: "We are proud to collaborate with Air Europa in its commitment to the decarbonisation of air transport, helping Spain to become a benchmark for sustainable tourism. Air Europa has been recognised with the award for Lowest CO2 emissions in short haul in SkyTeam's The Sustainable Flight Challenge competition. The airline is also a finalist in two other categories: Greatest reduction of CO2 emissions in a short-haul flight and Lowest CO2 emissions for ground operations in home base.
On this occasion, the company participated by connecting Madrid and Amsterdam with a round-trip flight that became the most sustainable of all those operated by the Spanish airline this year. To do this, Air Europa used an aircraft from its most representative model, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and optimised all operational aspects, from the use of sustainable SAF fuel to the use of electric vehicles for ground operations.

Air Europa continúa consolidando su apuesta por la conectividad a ambos lados del Atlántico. La aerolínea ampliará este año su oferta de plazas en América hasta alcanzar los cerca de 3 millones de asientos, lo que representa un 13,3% más que en 2022. Este importante crecimiento viene acompañado de un mayor número de frecuencias a algunos de sus destinos en el continente, así como de un destacado refuerzo para afrontar con garantías la próxima campaña de Navidad y fin de año. Venezuela, Colombia o Panamá figuran entre los destinos que verán crecer en un mayor porcentaje su oferta de plazas. El incremento de la demanda experimentado a lo largo de todo 2023 se ha visto beneficiado, además, por la finalización del proceso de unificación y expansión de flota, que cuenta con el Boeing 787 Dreamliner como aeronave para los vuelos de largo radio. Esto ha permitido incrementar la capacidad de asientos, así como operar de forma más eficiente y confortable.
Ante el buen comportamiento del mercado, Air Europa elevará sus frecuencias de vuelo a nueve de sus destinos a partir de diciembre. De manera estable, alcanzará las seis frecuencias semanales a Panamá y Medellín, y las cinco frecuencias semanales a Quito, Guayaquil, Asunción y Caracas. Asimismo, y de manera puntual entre diciembre y enero, abrirá una sexta conexión con Asunción. También añadirá una quinta frecuencia semanal a Estados Unidos (Nueva York), y a Santa Cruz de la Sierra en Bolivia, y activará una tercera conexión a Salvador de Bahía, en Brasil, para responder a la demanda vacacional de fin de año.

Air Europa continues to cement its strong commitment to connectivity on both sides of the Atlantic. This year, the airline will be increasing the availability of seats for the Americas to nearly 3 million, representing a 13.3% increase compared to 2022. This significant growth is accompanied by a greater number of flights to some of its destinations on the continent, as well as a significant reinforcement to guarantee the upcoming Christmas and New Year campaign.
Venezuela, Colombia and Panama are among the destinations that will see a higher percentage increase in the number of seats available. The increase in demand throughout 2023 has also benefi ted from the completion of the fl eet unifi cation and expansion process, with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner as the aircraft for long-haul fl ights. This has increased seating capacity, as well as allowing for a more effi cient, comfortable service.
In view of positive market performance, Air Europa will be increasing its flight schedule to nine of its destinations from December onwards, steadily increasing to six weekly flights to Panama and Medellin, and five weekly flights to Quito, Guayaquil, Asunción and Caracas. It will also be opening a sixth connection to Asunción between December and January, adding a fifth weekly flight to the United States (New York), and Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia, and activating a third connection to Salvador de Bahía, Brazil, to meet end-of-year holiday demand.

It is the most advanced map and shows realistic and detailed representations of the aircraft you are flying in on a 3D terrestrial background with the details of your route.
