THE LOWEDOWN

WE were obviously disappointed to come away from Cambridge without a win last week, especially after how well we have been playing – you could see some very good signs from the previous games, including the one at Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup. I have always said that we need to find a consistent level of performance, and I am sure that we will. There is an inconsistency, not only from our point of view, but throughout the league at the moment. Overall, though, I am pleased with the position that we are in. We have a game in hand on most teams above us and we feel like we are ready to get that consistent balance. Then, playing the way that we are playing, we have got that every confidence that we can start climbing into the play-off positions. The club was recognised by nominations for manager and player of the month – Sarce – for November, and we are well talked about up and down the country; the football and the style of play that we are playing is very good and attractive, not just to only us, but from a neutral perspective, too.

It is great to have Dave Galley on board as our Head Physiotherapist. He brings a wealth of experience to the club and we were pleased the minute that we knew that he was joining us. We thank Dave’s predecessor Paul Atkinson for his service to the club; to Dave for committing his future to us; and to Neil Dewsnip for the part he played in Dave coming here. We are going about our business in the right way. We have got a good team on the pitch and a good team behind them. We want to be talked about up and down the country as being one of the best sporting organisations in the South West – that is what the chairman and the Board wants and we will always be striving to fulfil those goals. This afternoon is going to be quite an experience, with supporters right behind the dug-outs for the first time in quite a while. It will be nice to see them, because it has been weird having no-one there. I would like to welcome Derek Adams back to Home Park this afternoon. He served the club well for four years and I wish him all the best at his new tenure with Morecambe - after today. Finally, on behalf of my staff and my players, I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas.

ARGYLE LEGENDS BUCKET COLLECTION

8

Argyle Legends are holding a bucket collection today as they continue their quest to raise £10,000 for the charity Guide Dogs for the Blind.

At half-time today, former players Leigh Cooper, Chris Harrison, David Byrne, Steve Davey and others will go amongst the crowd to collect donations.

The event is the idea of former Pilgrims captain and Legend Leigh Cooper who, after attending a charity evening, said: “Why doesn’t Argyle Legends do something like this?” A brief chat with fellow former players ensued; the charity was chosen and the target was set.

For those of you unable to contribute today, visit the Legends’ Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/argylelegends.

Paul Hart, Argyle Legends secretary, said: “We contacted Guide Dogs, who are naturally thrilled we have chosen them and they have told us that £10,000 will enable us to put a guide dog puppy through training and name the puppy, as well as allowing us two visits to meet the puppy and to follow its progress until it goes on to be a lifechanger for its new owner. “We have decided to call the puppy Legend.”

Please consider making a donation to help the Legends achieve their goal.

USA TOUR IN the final part of our five-part series detailing Argyle’s travels in America in 1954, NINO ROBERTSON takes a look at the final three games before the Pilgrims headed home – and a couple of bumpy rides along the way!

In the 60-plus years since Argyle’s venture across the pond, clearly significant advancements in aviation have been made – there would be no need nowadays for treacherous boat journeys across the Atlantic, or small and fragile-looking aircrafts. America can be reached by plane in eight or nine hours and, more importantly, aircraft are far better equipped to deal with testing weather conditions mid-flight. Argyle were given quite the fright while travelling from Chicago to Detroit. During their flight, they were caught up in an electric storm – it was hurricane season in America, after all!

9

The first hurricane that year was recorded in May, and storms did not subside until January the following year, with winds reaching a scary maximum of 130mph! Nevertheless, Argyle arrived in Detroit on May 27, unscathed from their ordeal at the start of the tropical storm season, to play the Chicago Polish Falcons on May 29. The Falcons were nowhere near their soaring or scoring best, losing 6-1 to another ruthless Argyle performance. Sam McCrory and Jimmy Crawford scored two each, with Ernie Edds and the prolific Neil Langman also notching.

Argyle had little time to rest, however. The following day, they played in Philadelphia against the city’s All Stars side. For the second time in the tour, Jimmy Rae’s side were pushed all the way but prevailed 3-2 – with goals from Crawford and Langman, again, and Paddy Ratcliffe – before heading back to New York to round off their 10-game camp. The American All-Stars were our final opponents before it was time to experience all manner of hellish sea sickness on route back to the England and the South West. The game was decided by a single Neil Langman strike. After that, there was time to take in the sights of the Empire State Building on Fifth Avenue. After their hectic schedule, the boys would be forgiven for finding climbing the 102 floors such a daunting prospect! The Argyle party headed home on the SS Flandre, setting out on June 3 and arriving back home on June 9. A successful tour had been had by all. Those who made the journey had not only done the city of Plymouth proud, but were left having made great memories, as well as friends.

Review NEW Year’s Day visitors Swindon Town pulled clear at the top of Sky Bet League Two last Saturday with a 3-0 win at Grimsby Town. A double from Jerry Yates (pictured) added to the prolific Eoin Doyle’s opener as the Robins moved four points clear of Forest Green Rovers. Rovers lost 2-0 at home to Scunthorpe United in a game which was briefly halted by the referee after allegations of racist abuse towards Scunthorpe players. After a goalless first half, Alex Gilliead opened the scoring for the Iron before Abo Eisa’s solo screamer made the points safe despite Levi Sutton’s late dismissal. Exeter City moved ahead of Rovers into second with a 3-2 win over Northampton, despite falling behind to Charlie Goode’s goal. Randell Williams equalised before half-time and quickfire secondhalf goals from Aaron Martin and Alex Fisher earned victory for the Grecians, with Sam Hoskins grabbing a fine consolation. Cheltenham Town beat Mansfield Town 3-0, Jonte Smith and Will Boyle on target either side of half-time before a late third from the impressive Alex Addai. Crewe Alexandra’s game at Macclesfield Town, who we are scheduled to visit next Saturday, did not go ahead, with the hosts’ squad refusing to play having not been paid in recent weeks. Macclesfield have now been warned they face further disciplinary measures, having been charged last month with misconduct by the EFL over their failure to pay players. “Macclesfield Town has informed the EFL that they will not be in a position to fulfil Saturday’s League Two fixture against Crewe Alexandra,” read an EFL statement. “As a result of this formal notification, the League has been forced to suspend the game and under EFL Regulations, the club is now deemed to be

guilty of misconduct and will be referred to an Independent Disciplinary Commission. The EFL will now consider the matter of determining when the fixture will be played. “The EFL had met members of playing staff at Macclesfield Town alongside representatives of the PFA earlier on Friday and during that constructive meeting it was made clear that the health and wellbeing of both the players and staff had been adversely affected by the ongoing late payment of wages and, as a result, would be unable to focus on on-the-pitch matters. “The EFL has considerable sympathy with the difficulties faced by all those affected at the club and is continuing to offer appropriate support to players via the PFA and to staff through our partnership with mental health charity Mind. In response to the postponement, Macclesfield issued a statement of their own, urging fans to continue with their “incredible support going forward”. “Despite the obvious disappointment which we all feel today, the players and staff all hope that we can rely on your incredible support going forward,” it read. James Vaughan’s penalty gave Bradford City a 1-0 win over Newport County to leave the Bantams in the play-off places. Elijah Adebayo gave struggling Walsall a muchneeded 1-0 win over Port Vale, who had Tom Conlon sent off in the closing stages. Colchester United needed a late Harry Pell header to see off Salford City, while three games were drawn. John O’Sullivan responded quickly to Hallam Hope’s opener as today’s visitors Morecambe earned a 1-1 scoreline at home to Carlisle United, and Oldham Athletic’s Johnny Smith and Leyton Orient’s Jordan Maguire-Drew were on target in the first half of the Latics’ clash with the O’s. Stevenage and Crawley Town played out a goalless stalemate.

ANDREW PARKINSON CHIEF EXECUTIVE GOOD afternoon and a very warm welcome to everyone for this afternoon’s game with Morecambe.

closely with both the first team, in supporting Ryan and Steven, and in linking the pathway from the Academy to the first team. We are delighted to have Neil on board.

We would like to welcome all the supporters and officials who have made the trip down from the Lancashire coast for our last Sky Bet League Two game before Christmas. In particular, of course, I am sure that you will join me in extending a warm greeting to manager Derek Adams, until recently the man in charge at Home Park.

As part of this move forward, Dave Galley has also joined the club as Head of Physiotherapy to support Neil in this critical area. Again, Dave has worked within football for many years at all levels and will be a vital addition to the backroom team.

It is particularly timely, too, that we see his return on what is a special day for the club, the first use of the new Mayflower Grandstand for the first team. This is the first league game when the stand can be opened to the general public and when we can allow up to 50% capacity within the new environment.

Lastly, a warm welcome to Chris Beard, who has now been at the club for just over a month in the key role of Head of Recruitment at the Academy. All of these appointments are a key ingredient to providing a platform for future success for the long term.

This will gradually be increased until the first game of 2020, against Swindon Town, when full capacity will be consented as a part of the new safety certificate.

The immediate focus is, of course, today’s game and those in this critical Christmas period, both in the league and the Emirates FA Cup, and ensuring that we are well placed for the second half of the season.

Since my last programme notes and notwithstanding the fantastic work that has been taking place on the Mayflower Grandstand, there has been much activity elsewhere within the club.

However, it is also about building for the future. The January transfer window is just around the corner and, beyond that, we are endeavouring to develop a winning style of football with which the club will become associated at all age-groups.

Of particular focus has been the long-term footballing strategy and the support and development of the first team and Academy. The appointment of Neil Dewsnip as Director of Football of the club is key in this.

I am sure that you, like me, will have been struck with the exciting football that Ryan has brought to Home Park – this is something we will look to build on as a footballing philosophy for the future.

Neil comes to us with a wealth of experience at all levels of the game at both club and international level and at all age-groups. He will be instrumental in the development of our footballing strategy for the future. Focusing on recruitment and coaching, he will work very

So here’s to three points today, a merry Christmas to one and all, and good times ahead. COYG! Best Wishes. Andrew

“THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS IS, OF COURSE, TODAY’S GAME AND THOSE IN THIS CRITICAL CHRISTMAS PERIOD, BOTH IN THE LEAGUE AND THE EMIRATES FA CUP"

BACK I N THE DAY Mike Curno has been scouring the Argyle Archives to seek out some interesting stories from the Pilgrims’ past. WILLIAM Alexander Hullett was born in Liverpool on November 19, 1915. He began his football career in his home town with Everton, although he never got the opportunity to play for the Toffees. Instead, he played and made his league debut for New Brighton, on the Wirral, in 1936-37. He scored eight goals in 13 Third Division North starts for the Wallasey club, before returning to Goodison Park. Hullett’s eye-catching performances in a number of Everton’s reserve matches drew the attention of a host of league clubs, including Argyle. Robert Jack brought the striker to Home Park in October 1937. Bill made his Argyle debut in a Second Division game at Barnsley, a 3-2 defeat, at the start of December that year, aged 22. The big centre-forward was not initially a regular choice for all of Argyle's league matches, making 11 appearances during the 1937-38 season. However, he had an excellent return, grabbing 10 goals, including his first hat-trick in Green colours, during the last match of the season - a 4-0 win against Southampton.

In 1938-39, he played in 18 matches and again reached double-figures (10). His goalscoring return came in fits and starts – including two hat-tricks – but it was enough to see him finish the season as the Pilgrims’ leading marksman. That season was manager Robert Jack's last season at Home Park, as well as the Greens’ alltime leading scorer, Sammy Black. In December 1938, Bill signed for Manchester United, but, due to the Second World War, the striker never made an appearance for the Red Devils. Once the war ended, Hullett switched Manchester for Merthyr Tydfil, having been passed on by the new Argyle regime after appearing for the club as a trialist. In the 1947-48 season, he scored 15 goals in 27 games for Cardiff City. He also played for Nottingham Forest in 1948, making 13 appearances and scoring two goals. Upon hanging up his boots, Hullett returned to Merthyr Tydfil as player-manager, and later took a similar role at Worcester City. Bill died in 1982.

WITH the Plymouth Youth Concert Band giving us that Christmassy feeling by the pitch this afternoon, the lights on along Royal Parade, and the Argyle Carol Concert just around the corner on Monday, I am beginning to feel a bit like Christmas. How about you?

However, to fresh ears, it is quite a story – hence its long-lasting appeal. There are some shocking elements, too, shock that is mostly lost on us because we have seen it performed so many times by children in school halls.

Monday’s Carol Service was thrown into doubt after originally being scheduled for the same day that we are now playing Bristol Rovers in our Emirates FA Cup replay, but we have jumped through a few hoops and are delighted to continue the popular annual event.

The God who created all things came to earth, not in power – a whirlwind or a devouring fire – but shrunk down so small as to become an ovum, a single fertilized egg inside a nervous teenager.

The Plymouth Youth Concert Band will be back to lead our singing; expect some appearances from a variety of Argyle personalities; and there are rumours that Father Christmas will make a special appearance, too. As schools and churches all over the country perform their own versions of the Christmas Story, I have been reflecting on the Nativity, and how it has retained the power to compel and engage even in today’s diverse and modern culture. That s not to say that it has not had some tweaking. In schools where there is a large year group and everyone has to have a part, you come across some amazing parts given to children. A Buzzfeed survey came up with: a double-glazing salesman; Jesus’ nan; a raisin; and ‘Bauble 3’ (hanging on a Christmas tree), amongst others. The plot lines are even better. How about the Christmas story being told by fleas on the back of a camel (using mobile ’phones to communicate)? I realise that the teachers probably get a bit tired of the traditional story and need to spice it up a bit, for their own sanity as much as anything, and, to some extent, we are all a bit over familiar with the Nativity.

In the Biblical account, you have an unexpected pregnancy, homeless refugees, supernatural visitations, shepherds, visiting astrologers and a violent and jealous head of state…and this was God’s plan for the salvation of his people.

In the words of Father Neville Figgis, “‘God is great,’ the cry of the Moslems, is a truth which needed no supernatural being to teach men. That God is little – that is the truth which Jesus taught man.” The atheist Matthew Parris once said this of Jesus: “I’ve got such huge respect for Jesus because his life was so radical, it was so inconvenient. If Jesus had not existed, the church most certainly would not have invented him.” It certainly is an amazing story, rooted in history, and being retold in countless formats at this time of the year, all over the world. Most amazing for me, and something that this crazy Christmas season constantly draws me back to, is that it tells of a sovereign God who sent his son in order to restore relationship with each one of us. One of the names for Jesus, and a word you might hear a lot at this time of year, is Immanuel: God with us. So, as we enter this wonderful season, my prayer for you is that – believer, atheist or somewhere in between – you might in some way unexpectedly encounter Jesus anew amidst the celebration and partying; the carols and the readings; the presents and the presence. God bless you!

with Club Chaplain Arthur Goode

NATIONAL LEAGUE SOUTHERN PREMIER DIVISION FIXTURES

Argyle Ladies

ARGYLE Ladies may have lost their first match in 12 but what a fantastic day out for the 800 fans who turned up at Home Park last Sunday to use the newly refurbished Mayflower Grandstand and see a cracking game against Watford.

The girls and the management are delighted at the response and hope that those who came enjoyed the match and will come to the Manadon Sports and Community Hub to support the girls, who are certainly not out of the FA National Women's League South promotion race. Following the 5-4 defeat, Argyle manager Dave Leonard said: "We are still in with a chance of the title. "It would have been nice to get at least a point but, if we win our two games in hand, we will be just a point behind Watford." What is exciting is that, if both teams continue with their current good form, the title may not be settled until the last game of the season, when we visit Watford. Sunday sees the Pilgrims play their final game of the calendar year, when they travel to Oxford United for the second time in a fortnight, after the terrific last-minute Kayley Lane winner that saw them progress in the FA Cup with an exciting 4-3 victory. Early in January, the girls travel to Watford, knowing that a win will put them in the hat with a chance of meeting a top professional

by Dave Potham team in the next round. Oxford will once again prove to be a difficult challenge as they were beaten only by a late Watford goal recently. On the playing side, Amber Pollock is to be congratulated for achieving the 100-appearance mark against Watford, with the flying winger also scoring 28 times. Another player approaching a milestone is top striker Natasha Knapman, who is just two games away from reaching 150 appearances, having netted a remarkable 178 goals. The Development team continued their winning form when a four-goal haul from Nicola Champion helped them to an 8-0 win at Exeter & Tedburn Rangers to stay top of the South West League Western Division. Argyle were disappointed at not gaining promotion last season because of FA rules but this season, if they win the title, they will be promoted. Joining the Argyle coaching staff is the Under-18 management team of Gary Bottomley and Ryan Lawton. The pair will join manager Rob Bonney and Dan Tecza to gain experience at senior level. After a difficult start, the Development team have won their last eight league and cup games and have reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup, having won 2-0 at Alphington two weeks ago. They will now receive Bristol Ladies Union on February 2. The Development team are without a game until January 5, when they face a tricky visit to Feniton, who they have already beaten 9-5 and 7-3 in league and cup games.

GOOD afternoon, and welcome to everyone for today’s EFL2 encounter against Derek Adams' Morecambe, and I am sure that everyone will want to wish Derek well for the rest of the season with his new club. The approach to Christmas and the festive period is always extremely busy for everyone employed in football and I suspect that this season will be even more hectic than normal. The routine pre-match and postmatch administration for five first-team matches in a 15-day window still needs completing to the same strict deadlines, but throw in Christmas events, and, of course, the not inconsiderable impact of making sure that the Mayflower Grandstand is ready to be fully open for business on New Year’s Day, and I am sure that everything will be a bit of a blur! Interestingly, the EFL have recognized the impact on clubs and, in particular, player recovery times so, from next season, the traditional Bank Holiday fixture that would have normally been played at 3pm on Monday, December 28 has been put back to an evening kick-off on Tuesday, December 29. Although this is likely to impact on the crowd size, this change to the schedule received the support of 95% of the clubs that voted, including Argyle’s, so the benefits will hopefully outweigh any reduction in crowd size. Sunday saw the Mayflower Grandstand open to supporters for the first time as part of our formal Test event schedule that cumulates with the Swindon fixture on January 1, 2020. It was a truly momentous occasion and provided a very useful opportunity to see how our match-day routines and processes will need to be refined when the Grandstand is in full use. It was fitting that the first match to be played with the Mayflower Grandstand open was an extremely entertaining fixture against Watford in the Women’s National League South. Argyle narrowly, and arguably unluckily, lost out by the odd goal in what was a genuine nine-goal thriller.

SEC’S FOOTBALL The teams were very closely matched, and the football of a very high standard. In particular, each of the nine goals would have been contenders for any goal-of-the-month competition and I am sure that both of the teams will remain very strong contenders for promotion this season. Let us hope for an equally entertaining affair this afternoon and, of course, three very important points as we strive to get back into the play-off places ahead of the busy festive schedule. Thank you for your support and enjoy the match, COYG!

UNDER-15 PREMIER LEAGUE CUP

The young Pilgrims had previously lost 4-2 at Cardiff and 5-2 at Southampton, but the signs were there in both defeats that they were capable of collecting their first points in their third successive away game. So it proved as they established a 2-0 first half lead before restricting their hosts to just the one reply in the second-half and leave Academy Manager Phil Stokes delighted. He said: “It was a very good defensive display showing a lot of resilience, both individually and collectively.”

WITH several of our regulars in the Argyle Under-23 squad at Fulham for Premier League Cup duty the previous evening, a very young side travelled to Hampshire. Four Under-15s and five Under-16s were included in a squad that found themselves a goal down in the first minute. The Cherries worked the ball down Argyle’s right flank before cutting inside and firing a low drive past the Pilgrims’ trialist goalkeeper. To make matters worse, the Greens were reduced to 10 men on 15 minutes, when Ali Mansaray collected a straight red after being adjudged to have pulled a Bournemouth striker back as he threatened to break clear. Bournemouth were then awarded a penalty after a quickly taken free-kick caught out the Pilgrims defence, leaving the goalkeeper to pull the striker down. Argyle changed their shape for the second half to counteract their numerical disadvantage but found themselves 3-0 down on 55 minutes as a striker fired past Harry Townsend, who had replaced the trialist on half-time, from eight yards. To be fair, the young Pilgrims then defended very well and restricted the Cherries to very few chances until two minutes from time, when a mis-directed clearance allowed a striker to fire home from 12 yards. Argyle: A Trialist (Harry Townsend half-time), Ollie Tomlinson, Ali Mansaray, Brandon Pursall, Reuben Collum, Angel Waruih, Carlo Garside, Will JenkinsDavies, Jeremiah Medine (Jeffrey Forkuo 60), Rubin Wilson, Oscar Massey. Substitutes (not used): Jack Endacott, Charlie Elkinson, Ryan Downing.

Argyle started brightly and were rewarded with a 10th-minute lead, when Ryan Downing beat his marker on the left flank to drive into the box and unleash a fierce drive that took a deflection on its way into the goal. Swansea came back to dictate possession, but a hardworking midfield and strong defensive display from Argyle restricted their Welsh hosts to long range efforts.

The visitors were rewarded for their hard work with a second goal, late in the half, when Will Jenkins-Davies’ free-kick found Oscar Halls making the most of indecisive goalkeeping to head home. The Swans surged forward after the break and required just two minutes to pull a goal back, as a right-wing free kick found a striker unmarked at the far post to fire home. Argyle had the ideal opportunity to restore their two-goal advantage after Caleb Roberts was brought down in the box, but the usually reliable Halls saw his spot-kick come back off the post for the home defence to clear their lines. Once again Swansea came back, but Argyle defended magnificently to earn a deserved three points. Argyle: Zak Baker (James Morley halftime), Brandon Lapthorne, Harvey Field, Jeffrey Forkuo, Oscar Halls, Brandon Quinn, Adam Poole (Isaac Aaron-Driscoll half-time), Will Jenkins-Davies, Ryan Downing, Caleb Roberts (Freddie Issaka 50), Jack Endacott.

WORDS TO THE WISE

WE have been leafing through previous season’s copies of the Pilgrim matchday programme to reminisce about Argyle life in the past.

Argyle v Chesterfield, Nationwide Football League, Second Division. Saturday, September 21, 2002. £2. Le Keeper is 22nd in the all-time appearances list at Home Park, keeping goal more than 300 times for the Pilgrims. A two-time promotion winner, Larrieu was a party to some of the greatest moments in Argyle history, as well as the lows that followed during administration.

The significance of this occasion will not be lost on skipper Katie Middleton, who is listed in this programme alongside her sponsor, the Eggbuckland Community College Lifelong Learning Centre. What a club stalwart!

Nearly 12 years after joining the Greens, Romain hung up his gloves to become assistant-manager to Carl Fletcher in the club’s time of need. Despite going many months unpaid, with a young family to look after, Larrieu and Fletcher kept the club in the EFL against all odds – which, it could be argued, is as impressive as any of his countless on-field achievements.

COVER STARS PAUL WOTTON AND GRAHAM COUGHLAN

31

Has there ever been quite so much defensive prowess in one programme picture?

Paul Wotton, two-time promotionwinning captain, former assistantmanager, and second-placed on the all-time appearance list, and his defensive partner Graham Coughlan, voted into the Pilgrims’ team of the century, perform a pincer movement on a Cheltenham Town player during the Greens’ 2-1 win at Whaddon Road. Both were on the scoresheet in that game, too. Wottsy went on to win the Player of the Season award for that campaign, succeeding Cocko, who had won it during the promotion-winning season of 2001-02.

PULL-OUT PLAYER ROMAIN LARRIEU

It says something about the era in which this programme was printed that so many legends grace the pages. Every bit the Argyle hero, Larrieu is captured by club photographer Dave Rowntree (a Pilgrim legend in his own right) making a quintessential fulllength diving save.

The stand-out advertisement, from an Argyle perspective, comes from the Western Morning News on page 19, which dedicates its marketing to its chief sportswriter, Rick Cowdery.

On page 43, there is a Player Sponsors’ list dedicated to Argyle’s fledgling Ladies side. Formed in 1975 as an ad-hoc five-a-side team, Argyle Ladies spent their early years operating under several different names – including the Saltash Pilgrims. It was only in the 200102 season that the team became Plymouth Argyle Ladies. Fast-forward to 2019, and the Ladies team rightly enjoys a much higher profile. As such, the team made history by becoming the first side to play in front of supporters in the redeveloped Mayflower Grandstand against Watford on December 8.

The WMN advert focuses on Cowdery’s 15 years covering the Greens, making him the “first and best” authority on the club’s fortunes. The club, itself, must have agreed with the paper, as it moved to appoint him as its Head of Communications only a year or so later. And he’s still here. How many years covering Argyle is that now, Rick?

G N I K PEC ORDER

Especially as a local lad, how is it for you being in the first-team set-up now? I found it a big step up. Training now is a lot more serious – everyone is faster, stronger. It took a bit of time to adjust; I would say I’m still adjusting to it now. I am certainly learning new things every day. I’m used to playing Under18s football, being one of the bigger, stronger lads, then I come up to senior level and I’m one of the smaller ones; they are adults and I am just new to it. It’s a step up physically. How have you found Ryan Lowe since he arrived? He has been brilliant since he came in. Obviously the style of football has changed and it’s easier to play out from the back. Last season, I was used to hitting a lot of longer passes, and now I find I rarely hit the longer passes unless it’s the end of the game or we are just trying to kill a bit of time. At the moment, we are playing short. I prefer it. I used to think it was easier just to hit a long ball but it turns out that, because you have lots of options, it’s far easier to play a short pass. Ideally, you would want to play the forward pass, but if it’s not on, then it’s about not rushing it. It’s better to play simple and whatever you see first. In pre-season, you found yourself in the side – you must have been delighted? Pre-season was really good. I played against Truro and then Plymouth Parkway and I thought I did alright. Then we had a bit of a test against Torquay, where I maybe didn’t do so well, but I thought it was a good learning curve because you are playing against much more physical strikers. For me, I was just taking it day by day, week by week, and seeing how I get on from there.

The oldest thing you own is?

“My car. It's a Peugeot; I need a new one"

Throughout your career so far, you have had quite a number of positions When I was signed at Under-11s, I was actually a right winger and I was quite quick, to be fair! It was more when I got to Under-13s that I started to play in central midfield or in that holding role, and I started to really enjoy it there. Last season, we had quite a few centre midfielders and a couple of injuries at centre-back. Andy Burn was injured and so was Ollie Tomlinson, who is the year below me, so I was the one to drop back. I have stayed there ever since. How do you find playing at centre-back? I love it there. You normally get a lot more time on the ball and I just enjoy defending. Things like tackling and heading, I really enjoy; I like that ‘nasty’ side of the game. In holding midfield, you get far less time because you are always checking over your shoulder and different angles; at centre-back, there is space in front of you and you have time to pick out a pass. Initially, how did you get into football, and link up with Argyle? I started playing for Wadebridge Town, near Bodmin, in Cornwall. I enjoyed played there. Then I remember going to a trial day, in Newquay, I think. I was first coached by Chris Souness, who recommended me to the Academy just before I turned 11. I still lived in Bodmin until I was 16, so it meant I had to travel up three or four times a week to train. Who was your football idol growing up and why? I always used to watch Chelsea quite a lot growing up. I used to love watching Frank Lampard. Growing up, Chelsea were always one of the better teams and I just really liked watching them. How do you spend your time off? That is a tough question because, any time that I do have spare time, I just go home and I don’t really do much. I’ll just chill out and watch Netflix. I’m watching Power at the minute; I’m halfway through that. Suits, as well; I recently finished that, all nine seasons of it. How did you manage so many games last season? I think I played something like 60 games last season – Under-18s games, Premier League Cup, and in the Central League, as well. That was really tough; I was playing two games a week every single week. Playing so many games actually helped because I was getting used to a new position; there is so much to learn, but it is good to come up against different types of strikers. I really enjoyed playing in those games. >>>

>>> How do you find playing in the Premier League Cup? You go into the game a bit more nervous than you would in a normal game but you find that a lot of the players you play against are not as good as you expect them to be at that age. Of course, there are some exceptions to that, but we played Watford the other day and I didn’t think that their front three was anything better than what we had up front. That’s my opinion, anyway. Fulham had Tammy Abraham’s brother playing for them. He was a bit of a handful, but I still think that some of our strikers are just as good. Omar Niasse played for Everton Under-23s. I think he might have taken his foot off the pedal a little bit in that game but you could still see that his first touch was quality. Who in the first-team has given you the best advice? Niall Canavan helps me out a lot with my heading and positioning. The young lads normally stay a bit later after training and do some extra bits, and some of the seniors come out and help, too. Gary Swayer is obviously really good, too. It is good that they are always there to give us advice if we need it. Obviously, those boys have been playing for a lot longer than me so they have so much more experience. How did you find going to Dorchester on loan? That was good because it was a new experience. I was meeting a whole bunch of new lads for the first time; it’s a case of fitting in and then winning their respect on the pitch and things like that. I think I fitted in quite well, straight away. I was only there for a month, so I only played four games. We didn’t really get the results that we wanted but the team was struggling at that point. I’m sure they’ll go on to do better things this season. Talk me through your first-team debut at Newport last season? I was really proud to play in that game. It came out of the blue, really, because we trained on the Monday, which was one of my first ever training sessions with the first-team, and then I was playing in that game in the

Checkatrade Trophy on the Tuesday. Everything was a lot more professional than what I’m used to. It was a great experience; I really enjoyed it, it was just a shame we couldn’t get a good result. I think, just before that, I had played quite well in the Premier League Cup defeat against Aston Villa, so it stemmed from that game, I think. We lost 1-0 but conceded in the last five minutes. Kevin Nancekivell is involved with the non first-team games – how do you find him as a coach? Nance has been great. Last season, we obviously did really well in the Premier League Cup and we just want to do more of the same this season. He tries to make sure that we’re always keeping the ball; if we do that, we will get a lot more positive results. I think it definitely is a worthwhile competition. If we weren’t playing in that, we would just be in the Central League and would only have 10 games a season.

50/50

GOOD afternoon and welcome to your 50/50 Lottery brief. After a great performance at Bristol and then a bad day at Cambridge, let us hope the lads can now get back to winning ways. With a few games at home now over the Christmas period and, with a bit of luck, we could be in the play-offs and also secure a good cup win. So, Come on You Greens - you can do it. As you know, we love it when winners agree to tell us about their win in our half time draw. Kevin Commons has been a very lucky winner indeed - at the Colchester match, Kevin won the cash prize of £701 and he told me this is the third time he has won a prize in the lottery. Kevin has worked at Goovean Aggregates for the last 40 years and has been following the Green Army for as long as he can remember. He is a long-standing season-ticket holder and supports the 50/50 Lottery every week - well done, sir. Another lucky winner at the same game was Keith Haydon, who won an Argyle shirt of his choice. Keith has also followed the Greens for many years and has been a seasonticket holder for the last 20. He kindly let his grandson Lenny Haydon have the shirt. Lenny is a pupil at Woodford Primary School and he supports the mighty Greens, along with his granddad, and plays both football and basketball keep up the good work, Lenny, and one day - who knows? - you might be playing on the golden green turf. The 50/50 Lottery team really do appreciate the support we receive from you, our loyal supporters, who keep buying the tickets at every game, and, of course, our sponsors, who just keep donating prizes for the half-time draw. As far as we are concerned, you are all winners as every bit of profit we make gets ploughed straight back into to the club. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Today's prizes are: First - cash; Second - A Tony Waiters' Era pictorial scrapbook; Third - An annual Family Membership voucher kindly donated by Hill Lane Tennis Club, Plymouth; Fourth - A large box of Burts Chips. Thanks for supporting the 50/50 Lottery and - remember you have to be in it to win it. Enjoy the game Ken Beale and our great 50/50 Lottery team.

WHERE

Situated on the southern outskirts of Macclesfield, in Cheshire, Moss Rose has been the home of Macclesfield Town for 128 years. Formed in 1874, Macclesfield previously played at Victoria Road before the move to Moss Rose.

The John Askey Terrace, which is named after a former player and manager, is where up to 1,500 Green Army will be housed. For certain games, only the seating area will be made available to away fans with the decision based on the projected number of travelling fans and whether the visiting club has only seats available (and no terracing) at their own ground.

HOW

By Car Start off by following the Devon Expressway until you reach the M5. Follow the M5 and M6 to Old Mill Road/ A534 and proceed to take exit 17 from the M6. Continue by following the A534, then on to the A34 and finally the A536 through to London Road/ A523 in Macclesfield and Moss Rose is on the right.

Securi-Guard

There have been a number of very positive changes at Argyle over the past couple of years, notably new ownership, new management and significant investment in the club, all of which is very positive news for the future.

Like all of Argyle’s supporters, Securi-Guard hope that the club can mount a significant challenge for promotion to commence a steady rise up the rungs of the EFL ladder back to where they belong.

Although Securi-Guard has not been around as long as Argyle, they have been a significant feature of the Plymouth business network for well over 30 years and have undergone significant transformation over the last year.

46

Formerly a family company, Securi-Guard were purchased in December 2018 by Scutum SA, a company based in France, and one of the most significant security companies in Europe. So, they also have new ownership and new management, which is equally very positive news for the company. Securi-Guard naturally has strong links with many of the major institutions in the Plymouth area, both public and private. Since Argyle is a sporting flagship of the South West, it is only natural that Securi-Guard is a staunch ally and trusted partner.

Eco Environmental

THE club was delighted to have partnered with Eco Environmental to ensure that the Mayflower Grandstand had an industry standard bird netting system in place before its grand opening on New Year’s Day. The successful delivery of this project, coupled with the excellent relationship with Argyle, has enabled Eco Environmental to showcase the quality of their bird control works within the construction sector. Supporting homegrown projects such as this further strengthens Eco Environmental’s commitment to building local links within the Devon and Cornwall community.

Eco Environmental is delighted to be involved with the match-day hospitality on today for the visit of Morecambe and looks forward to welcoming Derek Adams back to Home Park. Further information regarding Eco Environmental’s control systems can be found at www.ecoltd.net.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION

Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.

50

COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)

The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.

Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.

THE RETURN OF FORMER MANAGERS TO HOME PARK Unless something dramatic has happened between the writing of this article and today’s match, this afternoon we will welcome Derek Adams back to Home Park. My careful wording of the previous sentence is partly as a result of Carl Fletcher’s recent sacking after just 29 days in charge of Leyton Orient, a spell that, as we know, included a 4-0 defeat at the Theatre of Greens. There is nothing original about former Argyle managers returning to the Theatre of Greens with a new club. More than 50 years ago Jack Rowley (Pilgrims’ boss from 1955-60) brought his Oldham Athletic side to Plymouth for a Third Division fixture on Saturday, November 2, 1968. Rowley was in his second spell in charge of the Latics and managed to secure a 1-1 draw. Mike Bickle was our scorer. Oldham were struggling and went on to finish bottom of Division Three that season. Rowley left the club the following December and never managed in the EFL again. In the Argyle hot seat for that Oldham match was Billy Bingham (1968-70). Bingham went on to manage Everton in the top flight and he returned with the Toffees to Home Park for an FA Cup fourth-round tie on Saturday, January 25, 1975. Argyle were flying high in Division Three under Tony Waiters at the time and the excitement garnered by this cup-tie ensured that there was a sell-out crowd of 38,000. Star striker Paul Mariner was injured, and it was his deputy, Welshman Barry Vassallo, who scored our consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat. In getting to the fourth round, Argyle had beaten Crystal Palace in the second round. Palace were managed

by another former (and future) Greens manager, Malcolm Allison (1964-65 and 1977-78). Allison had star players Terry Venables and Alan Mullery at his disposal, but still lost out to Waiters’ men. Indeed, deep into injury time at the end of the match, with Argyle winning 2-1, Palace were awarded a penalty that Jim Furnell saved from Venables. Mike Green and Billy Rafferty scored our goals. Allison had his revenge when the Eagles won in the league at Home Park in February, 1975, 1-0. However, it was Argyle who would go on to secure promotion to the Second Division, finishing in second place, while Palace could manage only fifth in the days before the play-offs when only the top three were automatically promoted. Neil Warnock (1995-97) has returned to Home Park a number of times since he left the club in January, 1997. He was delighted on Saturday, November 29, 1997 when his Oldham Athletic team triumphed 2-0 and he got one over his former (and future) assistant, Mick Jones. However, he was less happy when his Sheffield United team lost 3-0 to Bobby Williamson’s Pilgrims on Tuesday, February 22, 2005, as Graham Coughlan, Paul Wotton and Dexter Blackstock ensured that the Pilgrims took a big step towards ensuring their Championship status. Ian Holloway (2006-07) suggested that Paul Sturrock (200004 and 2007-09) should have a statue erected in honour of his achievements at Home Park before Argyle played Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, August 19t 2006. Luggy was content to leave Devon with three points following a 2-1 victory for the Owls in which Paul Wotton scored our consolation. Olly himself received a passionate response when he returned to Plymouth with his Blackpool team on Saturday, March 27, 2010. He also left with the three points following a 2-0 win as Argyle moved inexorably to relegation. Blackpool went in the other direction, winning the Championship play-offs and returning to the top flight for the first time in almost 40 years. Sturrock’s Southend United secured a 1-1 draw on Saturday, September 29, 2012, when on-loan Burnley attacker Alex MacDonald scored our goal. This was the last time that a former Argyle manager returned to Home Park for a competitive first-team fixture until Fletcher brought his Orient team here on October 22.

HISTORY

Founded: 1920 Home: The Globe Arena Nickname: The Shrimps Rivals: Fleetwood Town and Blackpool FORMED in 1920 after a meeting at the local West View Hotel, the Morecambe Football Club then took its place in the Lancashire Combination League for the 1920–21 season. Their Roseberry Park home was changed to Christie Park in honour of their president, JB Christie and the ground was given to the supporters in 1927. Throughout the 1950s and 60s the Shrimps enjoyed steady success. This included an FA Cup third-round appearance in 1961–62, losing 1–0 to Weymouth; a Lancashire Senior Cup Final victory in 1968, 2–1 against Burnley; and an FA Trophy success at Wembley in 1974, a 2–1 win over Dartford. However, they had to wait until 2007 to reach the EFL, after winning the Conference play-off final against Exeter 2-1 at Wembley. The Shrimps moved into their new home, the Globe Arena, in 2010. Their last ever game at Christie Park was a 2-1 triumph over Dagenham & Redbridge

in the second leg of the League Two Play-Offs. Unfortunately, they were 6-0 down after the first leg.

He was the longest serving manager in the EFL until he resigned in October 2019 to join National League outfit AFC Flyde and was replaced by former Argyle manager Derek Adams. Adams’ first game in charge was a 3-1 home win over Carlisle United in the Leasing.com Trophy but Morecambe are still searching for their first league win under new management. They

did bag an impressive point away at Crawley Town on November 16 – Cole Stockton grabbed a goal and restored parity with nine minutes of time remaining in a 1-1 draw at the Peoples Pension Stadium. In Sky Bet League Two, the Shrimps are bottom of the pile, but only by virtue of goal difference. Both they and Stevenage sit on 15 points. Having played one game more than Stevenage, they have shipped 10 more goals.

John McMahon appointed as Assistant Manager www.morecambefc.com

NEW Morecambe boss Derek Adams has added John McMahon and Barry Roche to his coaching team. Adams has appointed McMahon as his assistant boss while club skipper Roche has agreed to a dual role as player and goalkeeping coach. McMahon is a former Shrimps player who has been working with the club’s academy system for the past couple of seasons and is a highly rated and experienced coach. After hanging up his boots, McMahon spent eight years on the coaching staff at Tranmere Rovers, during which he had two spells as caretaker manager, in the 2003–04 season and at the end of the 2005–06 season. He moved to become first-team coach at Shrewsbury Town in June 2006 and was made assistant

manager in September 2007 before joining Liverpool as reserve team coach in 2009. In June 2011 he rejoined the coaching staff at Tranmere as first-team coach and was appointed caretaker manager of Tranmere in February 2014, after the suspension of Ronnie Moore.

MORECAMBE 1-1 CARLISLE UNITED www.morecambefc.com

MORECAMBE came from behind to take a well earned point in Derek Adams’s first league home game. John O’Sullivan was the Shrimps’ goal hero after levelling Hallam Hope's 47th minute opener for Chris Beech’s side. Adams made one change from the side that went down at Crewe a fortnight ago with O’Sullivan recalled with Sam Lavelle serving the first of his four match ban. Carlisle produced the first effort of note on 11 minutes when the highly rated Jarrad Branthwaite saw his long-range effort held by Mark Halstead. The keeper also dealt with Mike Jones’ attempt before the Shrimps almost led with the best move of the half. Cole Stockton and Lewis Alessandra combined well, the latter’s first-time ball met by the onrushing Aaron Wildig but his shot was straight at Adam Collin. Steve Old headed over from a Wildig corner but it was the visitors who ended the half stronger with Thomas seeing one shot deflected into the side netting and sending another wildly off target. Thomas was to play a key role as the visitors broke the deadlock two minutes after the break with a long ball that caught out Ritchie Sutton who allowed Hallam Hope to sneak behind him and slot the ball past Halstead.. Three minutes later Morecambe were level however, when Alessandra capitalised on some poor defending and laid off the ball to Wildig who sliced his effort on goal but was glad to see the ball fall for perfectly for O’Sullivan to head past Collin from close range. O’Sullivan came close to giving Morecambe the lead on 70 minutes when his shot seemed to be blocked by Wildig but the best chance came with six minutes left when Alessandra crossed from the right but Wildig could only head across goal and wide when well placed. The Shrimps survived one late Carlisle penalty shout when Gethin Jones went down in the box but the referee waved play on to ensure the game stayed all square. Morecambe: Halstead, Tanner, Sutton, Old, Conlan, Kenyon, Brewitt, O’Sullivan (Cranston 84), Wildig (Miller 90), Alessandra, Stockton (LeitchSmith 67). Subs not used: Da Silva Mendes, Tutte, Ellison, Brownsword. Carlisle United: Collin, G Jones, Hayden, Webster, Mellish, M Jones, Branthwaite, Scougall (Olomola 64), Hope, Loft (Sorensen 85), Thomas. Subs not used: Gray, Elliott, Carroll, Knight-Percival, Sagaf. Referee: Darren Handley. Attendance: 3,126.

Derek Adams praised Tom Brewitt and Alex Kenyon for their roles in Morecambe’s weekend draw with Carlisle United. The Shrimps took a point from Adams’ first home league game in charge thanks to John O’Sullivan’s second-half header. Brewitt produced a battling performance in the centre of midfield, winning a number of key headers and tackles in front of the back four. It was his midfield partner Kenyon – named as skipper with Barry Roche absent from the matchday 18 and his deputy Sam Lavelle suspended – who took the man-of-the-match honours for a similarly dogged display. “I think, in the middle of the park, they are two important players for us,” Adams said. “In that area of the pitch, you have obviously got to stop the supply to the strikers. “Then, on the flip side, they have got to find the passes and the two of them worked extremely hard, Tom and Alex, and then you’ve got (Aaron) Wildig coming in off the side and O’Sullivan the same. “Lewis Alessandra is trying to get into the pockets where he’s causing teams problems and he was probably unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet as well.” With Cole Stockton playing as the target man, the onus was on his team-mates to support him and create opportunities. While the Shrimps’ final ball let them down on occasions, there was a willingness to get forward, not least from Aaron Wildig. Deployed on the left-hand side, he contributed a fortuitous assist for O’Sullivan’s goal with a sliced shot which then turned into a perfect pass. He could also have snatched a late winner but, having got on the end of Alessandra’s cross, he could only head the ball back across goal and wide when well placed.

Gordon Howarth scored on his debut as Morecambe kicked off with a 5-3 win at home to New Brighton. Top scorer Keith Borrowdale netted 42 goals as the Shrimps won 32 matches, including 12 successive victories, on route to their first Lancashire Combination championship for 37 years. They beat Clitheroe, Penrith, Burscough, Wigan Athletic, South Shields and Chester in the FA Cup before losing 1-0 to Weymouth in front of 9,385. Morecambe also defeated Wigan 3-1 in the Lancashire Junior Cup final.

56

1962-63

Ian Whitehead scored a club-record 45 goals as Morecambe retained the Lancashire Combination title and Lancashire Junior Cup in 1962-63. Newcomers included Derek Armstrong and Trevor Morley, while a new stand was opened before a pre-season friendly against Leeds United and there were early 7-1 wins at home to Bacup Borough and Leyland Motors. Joe Dunn’s side also annihilated Rossendale 11-0, Prescot Cables 10-0, Darwen 9-0, Lytham St Annes 7-0 and Skelmersdale 7-0 as they scored 153 goals overall, pipping Chorley to the title on goal average. The Shrimps beat Horwich 2-1 in the Lancashire Junior Cup final.

1966-67

Player-boss Ken Waterhouse guided Morecambe to the Lancashire Combination Double in 1966-67. New signings included Charlie Lea as well as Barrow pair John Martin and Lance Millard. The Shrimps raced to the top of the table with five straight wins, including 5-1 victories over Marine and Rossendale. They lost only twice, at Burscough and Guinness Export, also taking York City to an FA Cup first round second replay. Arnold Timmins was top scorer with 28 goals as Morecambe won the Lancashire Combination title by six points. They defeated Fleetwood 1-0 after extra-time in the Lancashire Combination Cup final.

c i ss a Cl 1967-68

Arnold Timmins scored 47 goals as Morecambe achieved a Lancashire Combination title, Lancashire Combination Cup and Lancashire Senior Cup Treble in 1967-68. Ken Waterhouse’s side started with wins over Chorley and Bacup Borough, then Arnold Timmins scored eight goals in a club record 14-0 victory at home to Rossendale. The Shrimps also hammered Bacup 7-0, netting 112 goals overall as they retained the Lancashire Combination title. They also kept the Lancashire Combination Cup, beating Horwich 2-1 in the final. Morecambe lifted the Lancashire Senior Cup, defeating Burnley 2-1 in front of 4,230 at Christie Park.

1973-74

Dave Roberts managed Morecambe to FA Trophy final glory in 1973-74. Tony Webber scored on his debut as the Shrimps began with a 4-1 victory at Buxton but the thrilling FA Trophy run dominated the season. They beat Mexborough, Bangor City, Kettering Town, Bedford Town and South Shields on route to the FA Trophy final, and goals by Malcolm Richmond and Jimmy Sutton secured a 2-1 victory over Dartford at Wembley Stadium. Morecambe were also Lancashire Senior Cup finalists for the first time in six years but lost 3-0 to Manchester City watched by 3,221 at Christie Park. They played a record 71 games that season.

1994-95

New manager Jim Harvey guided Morecambe into the Conference in 1994-95. Summer signings included Steve McIlhargey, John Norman and Paul Rushton, with John Coleman scoring twice as the Shrimps began with a 2-1 UniBond League victory at Buxton. They were early pacesetters, losing just one of their first 11 matches, then Ian Cain grabbed a hat-trick in a 6-1 demolition of Winsford. Jim McCluskie scored four times in a 5-0 win at home to Matlock, then Morecambe trounced Horwich 7-1 but finished runnersup to Marine. John Coleman was the sole ever-present player and finished leading marksman with 31 goals.

cCAMPAIGNS 2000-01

Morecambe made national headlines as they reached the FA Cup third round for only the second time in 2000-01. Jim Harvey’s side beat Bedlington Terriers 3-1, Forest Green Rovers 3-0 and Cambridge United 2-1 in the FA Cup before losing 3-0 to Premiership side Ipswich Town in the third round, watched by 5,923 at Christie Park. They also took Hereford United to an FA Trophy fifth-round replay before losing on penalties. The highlights of the Conference campaign included Mark Quayle’s hat-trick in a 4-4 draw at home to Scarborough, John Norman’s treble in a 5-1 win at Kettering and a 6-1 victory at Kingstonian.

2002-03

Wayne Curtis and Lee Elam scored 31 goals between them as Morecambe qualified for the Conference play-offs for the first time in 2002-03. Jim Harvey’s side recovered from hesitant early season form to impress with their consistency. The Shrimps lost only once at home and won seven of their final 12 games, hammering Woking 6-0 and Burton Albion 5-0 as they finished runners-up to

Yeovil Town. They lost on penalties after a 3-3 draw with Dagenham & Redbridge in the play-offs. Morecambe beat Grantham 3-1, Chesterfield 2-1 and Chester 3-2 in the FA Cup before losing 4-0 at Ipswich Town in the third round.

2005-06

England Semi-Pro international Danny Carlton was leading marksman as Morecambe qualified for the Conference play-offs again in 2005-06. They began with wins over Halifax and Scarborough and remained in contention for the play-offs throughout the season. A 5-2 victory at home to Aldershot was quickly followed by consecutive four goal wins over Burton and Stevenage. They rose to second place after a 3-2 win at home to Forest Green in February but finished fifth despite winning their last five matches. Michael Twiss was the sole ever-present player. The Shrimps lost 4-3 on aggregate to Hereford in the play-offs.

2006-07

Sammy McIlroy plotted Morecambe’s 2006-07 Conference play-off final triumph. The Shrimps made an inconsistent start, winning only three of their opening 11 Conference matches. They soared up the table with a nine-match unbeaten run that ended with a 3-1 defeat at home to York City on New Year’s Day, also reaching the FA Cup second round. The arrival of Neil Sorvel, Danny Adams and Matthew Blinkhorn boosted promotion hopes and Morecambe won seven of their last ten games to finish third. They beat York in the play-offs before defeating Exeter City 2-1 in the Wembley final to clinch EFL status.

ADAMS RETURNS Ross County got to their first ever final in the Scottish Cup of 2010, knocking out top-flight Hibs and Celtic on route STARTING his youth career with Aberdeen in 1992, Derek Adams did not break into the senior side during a three-year stint at Pittodrie. In 1995, he crossed the border to play for Burnley but only made a handful of appearances at Turf Moor due to injury. The following year, he came back to Scotland and excelled for Ross County. As an attacking midfield player, Adams netted 41 times across two seasons at Victoria Park, form that earned him a move to Motherwell in 1998. The midfielder spent six years at Fir Park, staying with the club through their administration in 2002. Adams agreed a pre-contract to return to his first club, Aberdeen in 2004-05, and scored four times in 20 games. The following campaign, he spent at Livingston and, after the Lions’ relegation to the First Division, moved back to County. He was appointed player-manager in 2007 after a season in a similar role as player-coach. In 2008, Adams guided the Staggies to

the Second Division title. Two years later, Ross County got to their first ever final in the Scottish Cup of 2010, knocking out top-flight Hibs and Celtic on route. He then moved to the capital, spending a brief period under Colin Calderwood as assistant boss at Hibs. In 2011, he returned to County for a fourth time and, in his first season, won the First Division with considerable ease – their passage to the SPL was confirmed with five games to spare, finishing 24 points above runners-up Dundee. Their league success was built on a 40-game unbeaten run that was eventually stopped by St Johnstone the following season. In 2012, County finished fifth, just one point away from a European place. Adams departed Dingwall in 2014 after a seventh-placed finish. He joined Argyle in the close season of 2015, and in his first season at Home Park progressed to the Sky Bet League Two play-off final at Wembley, losing 2-0 to Wimbledon. The following year, he bypassed the stress of the play-offs, finishing as League Two runners-up on goal-difference to Portsmouth. The Pilgrims adapted seamlessly to the higher division, brilliantly finishing one point outside the play-offs in seventh place. Adams left Plymouth earlier this year with the club in the League One relegation places by virtue of goal difference. During his tenure, Derek was among the top five longest serving managers in our history and, in terms of win-percentage, one of the most successful. After six months out of the game, Adams joined Morecambe as manager last month following the departure for Fylde of Jim Bentley, who, at the time, was the longest serving manager in the EFL.

LET'S GO ROUND AGAIN Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS profiles ten players who had more than one spell at Morecambe

60

RAY CHARNLEY

England international forward Ray Charnley was a favourite during two spells at Christie Park. Locally born, he joined Morecambe from Bolton-leSands in September 1954 and was leading marksman as they reached the Lancashire Combination Cup final in 1956-57. He moved to Blackpool in May 1957 and was top scorer on seven occasions, joining Preston North End in December 1967. After spells at Wrexham and Bradford PA, he returned to Morecambe in June 1970 and netted 98 goals in 177 games overall before leaving in May 1972. He became a painter and decorator in Blackpool and died in November 2009.

DANNY CARLTON

England Semi-Pro international striker Danny Carlton scored Morecambe’s winning goal in the 2006-07 Conference play-off final. He progressed through the ranks at Morecambe and helped them win promotion to the EFL before joining Carlisle United in July 2007. Loaned back to Morecambe, he joined Bury in July 2009, then returned to Morecambe in February 2011. He grabbed a hat-trick in their record 6-0 victory over Crawley in September 2011 and netted 74 goals in 255 games overall for the Shrimps. Moving to Hyde in August 2013, then Chester, he revived his career with Lancaster after a knee injury.

KEITH BORROWDALE

Long-serving centre-forward Keith Borrowdale holds Morecambe’s alltime goalscoring record. Moving to Christie Park from Chorley in August 1958, he netted a record 52 goals during the 1961-62 campaign when the Shrimps reached the FA Cup third round. He was an important figure as Morecambe won the Lancashire Combination title four times, including the ‘double’ in 196667 and 1967-68, netting 289 goals in 454 games overall before becoming Wren Rovers player-boss in June 1968. Later Morecambe’s coach during Mick Hogarth’s reign as manager, he appeared as substitute against Bangor City in May 1979.

IAN WHITEHEAD

Inside-left Ian Whitehead starred as Morecambe won the Lancashire Combination title in 1961-62 and 1962-63. Previously with Preston, he failed to secure a first-team slot and moved to Christie Park in July 1960. He was a prolific goalscorer for the reserves in 1960-61, succeeding Jimmy Baxter in attack the following season as Morecambe reached the FA Cup third round and leading marksman as they won the Lancashire Junior Cup in 1962-63. Moving to Horwich RMI in October 1963, he rejoined Morecambe under new manager Ken Waterhouse in August 1965 and netted 116 goals in 123 games for the Shrimps.

KEITH GALLEY

Striker Keith Galley was leading marksman as Morecambe won the FA Trophy in 1973-74. He made his first-team debut at Bangor City in April 1973 and netted four times in

the same fixture in January 1974. Moving to Southport in December 1976, he topped their goalscoring charts that season and joined Telford United in July 1977. He briefly returned to Morecambe in March 1978, then played for Netherfield and Macclesfield prior to rejoining the Shrimps again in December 1981. After another spell at Netherfield, he returned to Morecambe for a fourth period in February 1989, scoring 126 goals in 435 games overall.

GRAHAM BYRAM

Goalkeeper Graham Byram was Morecambe’s ‘Player of the Year’ in 1978-79. Born locally, he began with Carnforth Rangers and played for Morecambe reserves before making his first-team debut as a 16-year-old during the 1976-77 campaign. He helped the Shrimps take Rotherham United to an FA Cup first round replay in 1979-80, moving to Penrith in July 1982. Following spells with Workington, Penrith again and Lancaster City, he returned to Morecambe in June 1987. He made 221 appearances overall prior to joining Colne Dynamoes in July 1989, then played for Netherfield and Penrith again. Still living in Morecambe.

STEVE HOLDEN

Striker Steve Holden was Morecambe’s top scorer in 1991-92. He played for Wren Rovers, Blackpool Mechanics, Runcorn, Northwich Victoria and Fleetwood Town before moving to Morecambe in August 1989. Joining Southport four months later, he was leading marksman in 1990-91 and returned to Christie Park in June 1991. He helped win the President’s Cup in 1992 and starred alongside John Coleman as the Shrimps twice finished third in the Northern Premier League, netting 90 goals in 192 games prior to joining Barrow in July 1994. Later with Lancaster City and Northwich again, he then managed Thornton ICI.

JOHN NORMAN

Striker John Norman topped Morecambe’s goalscoring charts on

three occasions. Signing professional for Tranmere Rovers in February 1990, he moved via Heswall to Bury in August 1992. He had a spell with Mold before joining Morecambe in July 1994 and helped twice win the Lancashire Cup. Moving to Hednesford in May 1999, he returned to Christie Park in March 2000 and starred as the Shrimps reached the FA Cup third round in 2000-01. He netted 112 goals in 336 games overall prior to joining Burscough in July 2002. Featuring in their 2003 FA Trophy final triumph, he subsequently played for Vauxhall Motors.

STEWART DRUMMOND

England Semi-Pro international midfielder Stewart Drummond was Morecambe’s ‘Player of the Year’ in two consecutive seasons. He turned professional with Morecambe in June 1995 and starred as they twice reached the FA Cup third round, were Conference runners-up in 2002-03 and won the Lancashire Cup in 2004, netting 42 goals in 343 games before moving to Chester in June 2004. He joined Shrewsbury in July 2006 and scored in the 2006-07 League Two play-off final. Returning to Morecambe in January 2008, he starred as they qualified for the League Two play-offs in 2009-10. He became their reserve-team manager.

LAURIE WILSON

Ex-England Youth defender Laurie Wilson helped Morecambe to qualify for the League Two play-offs in 2009-10. Signing professional at Everton in November 2004, he gained experience on loan to Mansfield Town and joined Chester City in July 2006. He was unable to prevent the loss of Football League status in 2008-09 and moved to Morecambe in July 2009. Joining Rotherham United in June 2012, he moved via Accrington Stanley back to Morecambe in July 2014. He scored their Goal of the Season against Luton in March 2015, netting 12 times in 137 league games overall before joining Bangor City in August 2016.

TODAY’S match is the unlucky 13th meeting of Argyle and Morecambe since the two teams faced each other at Home Park in 2012, when Morecambe snatched a 1-1 draw in the fourth minute of time added on. The following season, at the Globe Arena, Argyle gained their first win over the Shrimps, as CHARLIE ROSE recalls.

THE TEAMS Morecambe: Barry Roche; Andy Parrish, Nick Fenton, Will Haining, Robbie Threlfall, Izak Reid (Stewart Drummond 84), Andrew Wright, Gary McDonald, Kevin Ellison, Jack Redshaw (Richard Brodie half-time), Jordan Burrow (Lewis Alessandra 84). Argyle: Jake Cole; Durrell Berry, Darren Purse, Maxime Blanchard, Robbie Williams, Alex MacDonald, Conor Hourihane, Ross Jenkins, Andres Gurrieri (Paris Cowan-Hall 62), Guy Madjo, Warren Feeney. THE BUILD-UP Argyle went into their 2012 clash against today’s visitors after a somewhat sluggish start to their season. With just one win to their name, as well as three draws and three losses, the Pilgrims were on the hunt to add to their low scoring tally and kickstart their season. Seventeenth-placed Morecambe, who sat two places above the Greens prior to kick-off, had a fairly similar start to the season – two wins, two draws, three defeats. Carl Fletcher’s side were making the longest journey of the season, and with just two points on the road so far, grabbing all three points would have been the perfect reward for the 358 members of the Green Army who made the 650 mile-plus round trip. Morecambe were an unknown entity to Argyle, and the Globe Arena unknown territory, as the sides had met only twice previously. Fletch made three changes to his starting line-up from the one that had drawn 1-1 against Bristol Rovers in their previous match - on-loan Ross Jenkins, Andres Gurrieri and Warren Feeney being favoured ahead of Luke Young, Onismor Bhasera and Matt Lecointe. THE MATCH The Greens had the worst possible start, going down 1-0 within two minutes courtesy of a Jack Redshaw goal following a mistake by Darren Purse. Morecambe’s slender lead lasted for the rest of the first half and the live league table at half-time was grim reading. Fletcher’s side came back on the field for the second half, full of motivation, a little too much motivation in the case of Durrell Berry and Andres Gurrieri, who combined to bring down Richard Brodie inside the box, giving referee Tony Harrington the easy decision to point to the spot. Brodie converted to double the Shrimps’ lead. It needed something special to get back into the game and that came from Watford loanee Jenkins, who coolly slotted in a half-volley from 20 yards out in the 72nd minute. With 10 minutes left, a lifeline was awarded to the Greens after a Morecambe player handled the ball in the box, forcing Harrington to point to the spot again. Warren Feeney rolled the ball down the centre of the goal to level things up. Seven minutes later Harrington completed his hat-trick of penalty awards, giving Argyle another spot-kick, and Feeney kept his cool and repeated his previous feat to move the Pilgrims into 16th place. THE DEBUTANT Making his Argyle debut that day was Watford loanee Ross Jenkins, a player with Championship experience who looked a tidy signing for the Greens. After playing two games for Argyle, and scoring the one superb goal, Ross looked like he would be a valuable player. However, he appeared for the Pilgrims only twice before returning to his parent club following a foot injury.

CLIVE HITS 1,000! TODAY is a Green Letter Day for Clive Stevenson, who is working as a programme seller at a league game at Home Park for the 1,000th time. "It all started for me selling programmes at Plymouth Argyle with a game against Bristol Rovers inside the Lyndhurst turnstiles," says Clive. "I was moved to a permanent spot inside the Barn Park end the next game. Later, I was moved to inside the main entrance outside the then club shop. My next move was to take me to outside the Barn Park Turnstiles and, finally, I was given one of the prime spots outside the Grandstand entrance and the players' car-park, where, apart from the temporary move down the hill to near the Devonport End, I have remained for many a year.

"Whilst working inside the Barn Park end, I met my now wife, Karen, who, to this day, remains a loyal supporter and season-ticket holder. "My most surprising and successful sale was to a Newcastle fan who purchased 70 programmes. The most enjoyable and hardest days to sell were the busiest, with the hustle and bustle of the throng of supporters constantly looking to purchase, most being cup games: the visit of Derby County in the FA Cup, March 1984; Bristol City, April 1986 (promotion decider); before that, the Manchester United v St Etienne European match; and not forgetting the recent visit of Liverpool. "I was awarded Supporter of the Year for season 2008/2009 for services, and, in 2011, I was presented with a framed signed shirt by James Brent for achieving selling programmes at 1,000 games .

"My other claim to fame is my voice, of which it has been reported to me by purchasers of the programme, can be heard shouting "PROGRAMMES" as far away as Scott Business Park, Pennycross, the pitch and putt course, Pennycomequick roundabout and Higher Peverell. "My aim is always to sell a dry programme whatever the inclement weather and conditions I encounter when working and I still have the same enthusiasm as when I first started. "The total games working on the day of 1,000 league games will have reached 1,226." Congratulations, Clive.
