5. Small Groups, Big Experiences

Our trips reflect the vast knowledge and experience Smithsonian has gathered since its founding in 1846. All of our itineraries are carefully crafted to provide a deep, authentic, and unique experience, and many also provide special access to Smithsonian research, people, and facilities.

Now more than ever, the idea of traveling with a small group of fellow travelers is reassuring. You’ll experience the world in a bigger way, getting up close to renowned sites and taking the path less traveled. And with small-group travel, you’ll meet the local people, participate in cultural traditions, and get to know your fellow travelers and trip leaders.

2. A Name You Can Trust Smithsonian has worked hard over the past 175 years to earn its reputation as one of America’s most trusted institutions. And, as you would expect from Smithsonian, our journeys are known for top-notch service, engaging experts, and some of the most experienced trip leaders and local guides. And when you travel with Smithsonian, you know that your safety and well-being are always a top priority.

Once you add up the extras that we include—experts, enrichment, most meals, excursions, transfers, most gratuities, and even solo traveler savings on select trips—you’ll find that many of our trips are a very good value in addition to being an exceptional experience.

3. Travel with Our Experts

7. Supporting the Smithsonian Mission

Our world-class experts bring meaningful enrichment and insider perspectives to hundreds of departures on all seven continents. You’ll find that some of your best times with your Smithsonian Journeys Expert take place during informal conversations, at meals, and while exploring sites in more depth. In addition to traveling with a Smithsonian Journeys Expert, you’ll be accompanied by a top professional trip leader and local guides who are the best in the industry. They know their destination and itinerary intimately and can make adjustments on a moment’s notice.

When you travel with Smithsonian Journeys, your participation benefits the work of the Institution, supporting our educational mission to preserve our heritage, discover new knowledge, and share our resources with the world. And, you have the comfort of knowing that you are traveling with an organization that is committed to sustaining the character and biodiversity of the places we visit by selecting partners and suppliers who meet our standards for responsible travel and supporting regional economies through our use of distinctive local guides and accommodations.

4. The Smithsonian Community On any given trip, you’ll travel with intellectually curious, worldly, and adventurous lifelong learners. And the enthusiasm lingers long after the trip is over. Ralph Nurnberger is a historian who specializes in international relations. He is a widely acclaimed speaker who brings humor, current political insights, and historical background to his presentations. Ralph has appeared on radio and television programs as an analyst on political and international issues and has spoken on a number of international cruises. He received his Ph.D. from Georgetown University, where he later taught for 38 years. He is currently a professor at Florida Atlantic University. Ralph will lead the June departure of Berlin: A One-Week Stay in Germany (page 18).

Christopher Griffin is from County Galway in western Ireland. He studied literature at Trinity College, University College in Dublin, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He has published many articles and theater reviews. For 28 years, Christopher taught humanities at Strayer University in Washington, D.C., and he was a lecturer in English, specializing in Irish poetry, drama, and fiction, for eight years at The George Washington University. He has been an expert on many Smithsonian Journeys tours and has lectured at Smithsonian Associates. Christopher will lead the September 4 departures of County Clare: A One-Week Stay in Western Ireland (page 12). Q. What kinds of insights do you hope to convey to our travelers? A. I give insights into Irish history by using my own family as examples. For instance, I quote my own grandfather and namesake on his experience during the 1919-1923 Irish War of Independence and Civil War. I cite ancestors as instances of lived Irish experience and emigration to the U.S. Additionally, to help travelers visualize, I use scores of my own photos during lectures. Q. How do you infuse your tours with your expertise? A. Part of my expertise is having lived in Ireland for almost a quarter of a century. I studied at University College and Trinity College Dublin and received a master’s degree in Irish studies. I also bring an American perspective to my Irish tours since I have now lived in the U.S. longer than my tenure in Ireland. For decades, I have taught adults in the nation’s capital and one of Washington’s best bookstores. That, combined with my experience leading several Smithsonian Journeys tours, has made me uniquely familiar with audiences who are eager to learn, like our Smithsonian travelers.

Margaret Monnier, an expert on the Iberian Peninsula including the Basque Country and the Pilgrimage to Santiago, shares her knowledge through educational travel. She has a Masters degree in History from the University of Granada focusing on the Medieval coexistence between Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Margaret will lead the September 30 departure of Spain’s Andalusia: A One-Week Stay in Antequera (page 22) and the April & September departures of France and Spain’s Basque Region: A Stay in Hondarribia (page 26).

Q. What sort of topics do you like to include in your presentations? A. My favorite topics include Irish history spiced with apt quotations from great writers, like Yeats. I also enjoy dealing with trans-Atlantic journeys in both directions, such as Irish people emigrating to the U.S. or Americans, such as Lindbergh and Earhart, journeying to Ireland. Q. What do you enjoy most about accompanying Smithsonian Journeys travelers? A. I have engaged with scores of travelers across the many Smithsonian Journeys tours that I have led, and they are courteous, good-natured, sociable folk. Smithsonian attracts travelers who enjoy other people and want a local cultural experience. They are easygoing, go with the flow of the adventure, and are often seasoned travelers who eagerly approach the itinerary. There is usually a good-humored camaraderie by our farewell dinner.
