Bertrand Patenaude is an expert in modern European history and international relations at Stanford University, where he is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution. He received his B.A. from Boston College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. He has lectured throughout Europe and has led several study tours on the Danube. Bertrand has written several books on European, Russian, and American history. His most recent publication is Trotsky: Downfall of a Revolutionary, which was serialized for radio in Great Britain by the BBC.

Cassandra Potts-Hannahs is a historian with expertise in Anglo-Norman, Celtic, and Viking studies. With a Ph.D. in medieval history, she was a tenured professor at Middlebury College in Vermont. She has traveled with Smithsonian Journeys on more than 50 tours and cruises, sharing her passion and knowledge of Great Britain, France, and Ireland. As a Fulbright scholar, she has spent considerable time living and conducting research in France. In her research and lectures, Cassandra explores the cultural and political exchanges that have historically linked Britian, France, Ireland, and Scandinavia.

Stephen Clancy is an art historian with special expertise in ancient, medieval, and Renaissance art and architecture. A popular Smithsonian Journeys Expert, he has led more than 15 tours and cruises through the Mediterranean region and northern Europe. He recently retired as Professor of Art History at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, where he taught for twenty-seven years. After receiving his Ph.D. from Cornell University, Stephen taught the history of Ancient, Medieval, and Renaissance art and architecture. Stephen will lead the September 22 departure of A River Cruise of Provence (page 28) and the May 16 departure of A Seine River Cruise (page 32).

Valerie Hedquist is a professor of art history at the University of Montana. She earned her Ph.D. with honors at the University of Kansas and has been teaching and writing for nearly 30 years. Her research focuses on the arts of the 17th and 18th centuries and includes articles on the religious paintings of Rembrandt and Vermeer. Of special interest is the inﬂuence of Italian cultural attitudes on the visual output of these Dutch artists and others. Her book on the changing reception and meaning of Thomas Gainsborough’s Blue Boy was published in summer 2019. Margaret Monnier, an expert on the Iberian Peninsula including the Basque Country and the Pilgrimage to Santiago, shares her knowledge through educational travel. She has a Masters degree in History from the University of Granada focusing on the Medieval coexistence between Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Margaret will lead the May departure of Portrait of Portugal (page 24).

Valerie will lead the April 19 departure of Waterways of Holland and Belgium (page 12). Q. What kinds of insights do you hope to convey to our travelers? A. Art and architecture are primary documents of different times and cultural conditions. Providing the contexts for these images, objects, and spaces in order to comprehend how and what they tell us about the past and present is my main goal. Pointing out the role of patrons, the biographies of makers, the original viewing or functioning conditions, the process of production or construction, and the meaning or content expressed by artistic decision-making informs my contributions to the experience of Smithsonian Journeys travelers. Q. How do you infuse your Smithsonian Journeys tours with your expertise? A. In presentations, small-group travel conversations, and individual chats, I share my knowledge about speciﬁc art works and buildings as well as provide general background information for understanding better the entire experience of a location. I imagine what questions I might have about an unfamiliar place and address those topics with our Smithsonian Journeys travelers. Whether creating a framework for viewing Michelangelo’s David by emphasizing the political climate in Florence at the beginning of the 16th century or for walking into Bruges’ Basilica of the Holy Blood by focusing on the Second Crusade, I try to create a rich backdrop for ﬁrst-hand experiences. Q. What sort of topics do you like to include in your presentations? A. Biographical information about makers and their patrons has always brought art works to life for me. Reading letters written by Van Gogh provide clues to his mental and physical state and assist in unraveling some of the content of his most famous paintings. At the same time, references to the painter in the correspondence of his family members, friends, dealers, and critics amplify this biographical context by providing additional points of view. Focusing on the human actors seems to bring us all closer to the origins of an experience. Q. What do you enjoy most about accompanying Smithsonian Journeys travelers?

Timothy Blanning is professor emiritus of modern European history at the University of Cambridge and a fellow of Sidney Sussex College and the British Academy. He has published several books, which have been translated into twelve languages, on the political and cultural history of 18th- and 19th-century Europe. His most recent work is a biography of Frederick the Great of Prussia, published by Penguin/Random House. Timothy will lead the July18 departure of A Danube River Cruise (page 16) and the September departure of Voyage Through Europe (page 40).

A. I love to listen to their initial responses to a location, a building, an art work! Our travelers bring their own personal backgrounds to our shared experiences and enliven the moment. Every day, I learn something new through the astute observations and interpretations of Smithsonian Journeys travelers. Q. What are some of the highlights of our Waterways of Holland and Belgium program? A. For me, the Groeningemuseum in Bruges provides a perfect introduction to the Flemish past. Because it is a small collection, visitors can easily focus up close on individual artworks. I’m just dumbfounded every time I stand in front of Jan van Eyck’s Madonna with Canon van der Paele, and examine the individual brushstrokes of oil paint that make up the pages of the book and glasses that the canon holds and the wrinkles of his face. And the reﬂections! In the canon’s eyes, the armor of St. George, the gold brocade of St. Donatian’s cope, and in the jewels that border the Virgin’s cloak. Travelers are bedazzled. After all that visual stimulation, it is a good idea to enjoy a Belgian wafﬂe. I like mine with strawberries and cream.
