Summer 2019

Our Commitment To Accessible Recreation Opportunities LEISURE BUDDY PROGRAM

The purpose of the Leisure Buddy program is to provide support for individuals living with disabilities so they can participate in recreation opportunities offered by the City of Port Coquitlam. This can include, but is not limited to those living with physical, cognitive, behavioral or developmental challenges. The goal of a Leisure Buddy is to provide one-on-one volunteer support to program participants in an effort to create an inclusive recreation environment.

LEISURE BUDDY REQUEST PROCESS:

• • • • •

If the idea of a Leisure Buddy interests you, please visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/leisurebuddy to fill out an application form. Hard copies of the form are available at the front desk of all recreation facilities. Access Services requires at least two weeks’ notice, prior to the start date of your registered programs, to find an appropriate Leisure Buddy. Participants are matched with a Leisure Buddy on a first come, first serve basis. Spring, Summer and Winter Break camp programs require high demand for leisure buddies. Participants are eligible for two weeks of Leisure Buddy support based on availability and resources. Access to a Leisure Buddy is not a guarantee. If a Leisure Buddy cannot be found, Access Services will be in contact to discuss further options which may include withdrawal from the program.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR THOSE APPLYING FOR A LEISURE BUDDY:

• • • •

We acknowledge that each participant is unique and are keen to learn the best approaches or techniques specific to your child so they can be successful in our programs. When describing your child’s needs please remember what may be routine for you and your family may not be routine for our program staff. Our program staff focuses on leading group activities and aims to provide balanced supervision for all participants. The Leisure Buddy assists the instructor and participants by supporting those with one-to-one needs. Your child’s Leisure Buddy does not provide any personal care including changing, toileting, feeding or administering medications. We want to set all program participants up for success. When selecting a program, please consider the nature of the activities your child will be participating in. If you are unsure if a program is the right fit, please contact a program supervisor to learn more.

For more information on the Leisure Buddy Program, please contact Access Inclusion Services at 604.927.7974.

PERSONAL ASSISTANT SUBSIDY

The Recreation Department welcomes patrons of all abilities. Should you require assistance to participate, our Personal Assistant Subsidy program will allow your assistant or support person into our programs and drop-in activities for FREE. Personal Assistant Subsidy applications are available at all recreation facilities. Participants requesting a Personal Assistant Subsidy for their registered program must complete their application at least two weeks prior to the start of their program.

2

INDIVIDUAL SUBSIDY PROGRAM

The Recreation Department offers an Individual Subsidy Program for participants experiencing financial hardship. For those who qualify, the program provides a maximum subsidy of 50% (to a maximum of $50) for registration or membership per person, per quarter. For more information, please contact 604.927.7900.

www.portcoquitlam.ca/recreation

For more information, contact Access Inclusion Services at 604.927.7974.

* * * REGISTRATION NOTE FOR PARENTS Please be advised that it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to register children in the correct level of our swim program. Instructors assess all students on the first day of lessons to ensure that they have been placed correctly. In the event that a child has not been placed correctly, s(he) may be permitted to transfer to an alternate level, based on program availability, at the discretion of the aquatic staff. If no spots are available in an appropriate level, the child may be withdrawn from the program at the discretion of the aquatic staff for safety reasons.

What you should know about Swim Lesson Registration: NOT SURE WHICH LEVEL TO REGISTER IN? If you’re unsure what level your child should be registered in or it has been over a year since their last session, drop by for a FREE evaluation. One of our qualified instructors will assess your child and recommend the appropriate Red Cross level for enrolment. NOT PROGRESSING? If your child has been in the same Red Cross level for 3 lesson sets, within a 6 month period, and has not progressed to the next level, we will provide the child with one private lesson. Alternatively, you may choose to retake the level for the fourth time at 50% the regular cost of the program. We also offer other programs that may be more suited to the needs of the child, including Performance Enhancers, Front Crawl Workshop and Whip Kick Workshop. CANCELLED CLASSES: A minimum of 48 hours before a class starts, lessons may be cancelled where there is insufficient registration. We will attempt to find space in the next available class or issue a full refund. MAXIMUM NUMBER OF REGISTRATIONS: Program participants can only be registered for 1 swimming lesson set at a time. You may register your child for the next lesson set only after the completion of the lesson set they are currently registered in. Your child may be withdrawn from a program(s) if registered in more than one lesson set per session, or if registered in future lesson sets prior to the completion of the lesson they are currently registered in. There is an administrative fee of $5 for each individual activity withdrawal.

WAITLISTS: If the class you want is full, get on the waitlist! Classes with waitlists may replace any classes that have been cancelled. Please only sign up for one waitlist per participant. COMBINED CLASSES: Combined classes are being offered in an effort to provide a greater variety of class time options to families. In order to avoid cancelling a class, we may be required to move your child to another time in order to combine 2 classes with low enrolment. PROGRAM FEES: Program fees cover access to Hyde Creek Pool for participants in Swimming Lessons only on the dates and times listed. Program fees no longer allow participants to use the facility before, or after their lesson. Parents/guardians are welcome to watch their children participate in their lesson; however program fees do not include parent/guardian use of the facility before, during or after their lesson. As space is limited in the pool area during swimming lesson times, all individuals wishing to use the leisure pool, and hot areas may do so for a fee of $2 per visit between the following hours: Mon-Fri: 4-7pm Sat & Sun: 9am-12pm Sun: 4-9pm

TIDAL WAVE AQUATICS

Tidal Wave Aquatics is an exciting and unique program offered by Kidsfirst Physio. While the positive impact of physical exercise in the buoyancy and resistance of water is well documented, we have added an extra plus to our program. Under the personal supervision of Brenda Horton, B.S.R. P.T. (reg), MCPA, carefully trained youth assistants, who work directly with the children in the water offer one-on-one ratio of assistance to each child. Each specifically prescribed pool therapy program is developed and maintained by Brenda, yet presented with the unsurpassable enthusiasm and energy of the youth. The benefits of this combination to those involved in our pool program are unmistakable. The unique socialization atmosphere provided develops a bond that makes the “therapy” even more fun, appealing, and valuable to the children. Participants must undergo a physical assessment to determine need and appropriate physiotherapy plan prior to approval for the program. For more information about Tidal Wave Aquatics or to book an initial assessment visit, contact Kidsfirst Physio at 604-463-7537 or email to info@kidsfirstphysio.ca.

More places to go off-leash Dog owners now have two more places to play with their pets off-leash. New leash-optional areas opened Apr. 1 at Skyline and Chelsea Parks, part of a one-year pilot based on public demand and consultation. Feedback is being collected throughout the pilot, and bylaw enforcement is being ramped up to make sure users keep their dogs under control at all times and clean up after them. Dog waste bags and bins are provided. Survey and info: portcoquitlam.ca/dogs.

Know your canine etiquette Consider other park users and neighbours.

Use a leash in all public spaces other than designated off-leash areas.

Keep dog in sight and under control at all times in both off-leash and on-leash areas.

Help prevent wildfires Did you know that almost half of all wildfires in B.C. are caused by humans? To keep the community safe, Port Coquitlam bans outdoor burning and smoking/vaping of all types in parks, trails, along riverbanks and other natural areas. Help keep our community safe: • Call 9-1-1 if you spot a fire or smell smoke. • Use propane barbecues in parks only when permitted (look for signs during dry periods). • Dispose of cigarette butts safely – and never throw them out the window of a vehicle. • Don’t park motorized bikes or vehicles on or next to dry grass.

Clean up after your dog. Bags and bins are widely available.

Regional water-use rules in effect Avoid fines of up to $450 by following the water-use rules, in effect May 1 to Oct. 15 across Metro Vancouver regardless of the weather. During stage 1:

A healthy lawn is the best defence against the European Chafer beetle. Reclaim your lawn:

• Even-numbered homes can water 4-9 a.m. Wed and Sat • Odd-numbered homes can water 4-9 a.m. Thu and Sun More info and exemptions: portcoquitlam.ca/wateritright.

Pay monthly for taxes and utilities

Property taxes are due July 2, but did you know you can pay for next year’s taxes and/or utilities in easy monthly installments through the City’s prepayment plan? There is no administrative fee. Learn more at portcoquitlam.ca/prepayment.

STAY CONNECTED WITH YOUR CITY:

beetle mania • Prevent infestations: • Dethatch, aerate, overseed and fertilize in the spring. • Keep grass at least 6 cm high and leave clippings on the lawn to act as mulch. • Monitor your lawn: Look for torn-up grass and turned-over sod caused by birds and animals digging for beetle larvae. • Control infestations: Apply nematodes in summer. Go to portcoquitlam.ca/chaferbeetle for more information and videos.

Leisure Buddy’s assist in making the recreation camp experience more enjoyable for each child. The volunteer based Leisure Buddy program assist participants in registered recreation programs. When you register your child in a program, the Leisure Buddy form needs to be filled out and returned two weeks prior to the start of the class, to give sufficient time to find an available volunteer. The leisure buddy form can be found at any customer service desk or www.portcoquitlam.ca/access. For more information on program support or Leisure Buddies, please contact; Access & Inclusion Services at accessinclusion@portcoquitlam.ca or 604-927-7975.

UR BUILDING O IT Y CENTRE

MUN NEW COM

New amenities coming this fall! Construction is in full swing on the future Port Coquitlam Community Centre, and the push is on to open the rst new amenities this fall. The construction zone is a hive of activity, with more than 200 people on-site some days. At the same time, staff are planning for a fast and smooth transition for programs and services. Here are the rst new amenities to open: • LATE SUMMER/EARLY FALL: Two of the three arenas will open in time for the fall ice season, along with the new home of the Terry Fox Library. • FALL: All-ages multi-purpose spaces (activity rooms, games room, lounge and kitchen) will provide activities for families, seniors, youth and children. • END OF 2019/EARLY 2020: The leisure pool and tness centre will open.

WHAT ELSE IS IN STORE? New amenities over the next two years will include a third arena, gym, café, more multi-use spaces, an outdoor plaza and plenty of underground parking. Once completed in late 2021, the 205,000-square-foot facility will enhance recreation, library and other services, and be a place to gather and connect. It will also provide local jobs and serve as a catalyst for the downtown. The building will feature high ceilings, natural wood accents, lots of natural light, and mountain views from the second oor.

CONSTRUCTION IMPACTS We are doing our best to limit the construction impacts, and appreciate your patience. Please note: • PROGRAMS will be affected over the coming months as we nish the new amenities for fall. Users will be alerted in person, with signage and website updates. • PARKING on-site and on streets in the area is still limited to three hours, with posted limits enforced. If visiting during peak times, please give yourself extra time to secure parking, and if possible, walk, carpool or take transit. • ROADWORK around the facility will continue for some time. Please follow any detours, signs and ag people, and be aware of pedestrians and what’s going on around you. Go to portcoquitlam.ca/pococc for more updates and information.

JUNE 3 - AUGUST 31, 2019

Using drawing as a vehicle for storytelling, Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo’s ongoing body of work is a constant revision of historical, cultural and personal experience. Osvaldo is concerned with issues of collective memory, historical trauma and transnational identity within a global context, explored through the possibilities of narrative. His art practice is an intuitive construction of memory as a form of personal myth-making that casts political expressions, voices modes of resistance, and most recently speaks to a process of re-construction and reconciliation.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

A series of print collage workshops comprised of relief printing techniques where participants will be introduced to traditional relief mark making methods, using linoleum and wood blocks. Castillo will also facilitate playful image making sessions like printing on found textures and collage techniques for the creation of experimental monoprints. Participants will be instructed to print their relief mark making work on thin Japanese paper and other delicate papers using hand printing tools such as wooden spoons and/or barens.

COLLABORATIVE ALCHEMY PHYLLIS SCHWARTZ, EDWARD PECK, AND PIERRE LEICHNER AUGUST 1 - OCTOBER 28, 2019

Phyllis Schwartz, Pierre Leichner and Edward Peck are artists whose practice contemplates the full cycle of natural growth and transitions that are in an ever-changing state. They use plantbased materials to create works of art that speak to issues of permanence and impermanence. They are choreographers and arrangers who have manipulated natural materials into compositions that challenge the viewer to contemplate time, form, and the ephemeral.

STRING THEORY PEPE HIDALGO AUGUST 1 - OCTOBER 28, 2019

Spanish painter Pepe Hidalgo shares his surreal series of works that question the mechanics of reality, creating a world of dream-like possibilities. For the past 17 years, Pepe has made paintings with dots, points, and bubbles. Little by little his work has evolved into distorted, disproportionate forms, but he is always trying to respect the rules of harmony, volume, color and perspective. Pepe’s style is narrative in the figurative and abstract genre. His figurative is not related to realism, it is created from his imagination, and his memory of his sensation of reality. Hidalgo’s artistic process began in adolescence during frequent visits to the Museo del Prado in Madrid, where he discovered his first teacher, Francisco de Goya. His work is influenced by Velázquez, Zurbarán, El Bosco, movements of the 20th century, Picasso and American artists Francis Bacon, Freud, Esteban Vicente, and Pollock. Art has allowed him to “free himself” and express himself without prejudice; to dare to do what he feels without expectations. Many people ask him where he gets his ideas for his paintings. When you know him you realize he mixes his knowledge of astrology, mythology, history, life, and experiences. The inspiration for his paintings arise from everyday life and the search to understand the relationship of past or present events with the human being in relation to who, and what, we are.
