The Olympic Peninsula Wedding Expo Gather ideas and meet local vendors By Leslie Robertson, Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce Whether you’ve already chosen a date or you’re in the very first stages of thinking about planning your wedding, save the date for the 2020 Olympic Peninsula Wedding Expo. It will be held Jan. 26 at the Vern Burton Center in Port Angeles, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Entry is $5 per person and each bride or groom who attends will receive a gift bag and a complimentary glass of champagne. Attending the expo can help with many of the decisions couples face when planning their big day. Creating a wedding is unlike any other event. Whether it’s a small, intimate affair with just close friends and family, or a larger event for 200 guests, every detail matters. Each couple wants their wedding to be as unique as they are and the way a wedding feels is just as important as how it looks. The expo will give couples the opportunity to meet local vendors in person, see examples of the goods they offer and speak to them about services they provide. There’s no better way to ensure that each person or provider you choose is a perfect fit for your big day than to meet them in person.

The program will include dozens of local vendors who understand the unique qualities of a Pacific Northwest wedding. Providers like Fullness of Joy Floral, That Takes the Cake, Color Street representative Julie Broadwell, Jordyn Owen photography and many other providers will be on site to show examples of their work and answer all the questions you have about how they might fit into your vision. Using local vendors will allow you to find providers who are already familiar with many of the area venues and are used to working with other local providers to plan a seamless event. Budget is nearly always a major concern in planning a wedding, and meeting these vendors face to face will give you the opportunity to decide how you want to spend your money and explore various ways that they might fit into your financial limits. Even more importantly, you’ll be able to get a feel for each vendor and how they might lend their unique style to your event. Is yours a casual, do-it-yourself wedding, or a more formal, classic

affair? Do you want artsy, unique photographs or traditional poses? Do you want a beautifully crafted, multi-tiered cake or a fun cupcake tower? Still trying to decide what kind of wedding you want and just want to get ideas? Don’t feel like you have to know exactly what you want to benefit from the Wedding Expo — it will be the perfect place to help you make these kinds of decisions. Aside from being an informative opportunity to meet and speak with local vendors, the expo will be a fun event and a chance to mingle with other brides and grooms who are experiencing the same excitement you are. The program will feature a fashion show hosted by Black Diamond Bridal and DJ Robotix will be there playing examples of popular wedding playlists. Vendors will provide samples and tastings of their products, and each bride and groom who attends will be entered into a drawing for an engagement photo shoot with Jordyn Owen photography. Leslie Robertson is the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce events manager.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the roaring twenties. This iconic period in American history presents wonderful opportunities to bring throwback elements into any ceremony for couples getting married this year. Complicated lace and strands of rhinestones, headbands, tassels, mermaids and flappers are all making their way into 2020 wedding dress designs. Belva Bodey, owner of Black Diamond Bridal in Port Angeles, specializes in creating unique gowns to order so brides can combine various elements they like from other dresses or walk down the aisle in something completely unique. Hidden in a quiet location, brides and their family and friends are invited to Bodey’s studio on an appointment-only basis. The Victorian-appointed showroom is filled with enough gowns to fulfill any girl’s dress-up dreams. She also does custom bridesmaid’s, mother’s and flower girl dresses, so brides can make a group trip and enjoy the outfitting process as part of their complete wedding experience. Try on veils, jewelry and sashes as you find the

perfect combination for your body type and desired look. Bodey also creates custom garters, head pieces and other accessories. Alterations on outside designer gowns are available for a fee. View the many bridal styles: sleek gowns, fit and flare (also called a “trumpet” cut), mermaid, A-line and even elaborate ball gowns. The newest styles, borrowing heavily from the 1920s, also are available to explore. Often, women see dresses they like but know that it would look better on them if they could change this or that feature. Fall in love with the lace of one gown and the style of a different gown and have your own gown combine both designs. You can change almost any feature — replace a strapless bodice into a gown with straps, buildups and/or long sleeves, trade out a fit and flare skirt for a full ball gown skirt from another gown. Sometimes brides even gather several small details they like and have Bodey blend them into a single masterpiece. Regardless of how they go about it, Bodey’s customers get an undeniably specialized shopping experience.

Wedding dress cut classifications By Peninsula Daily News •

Ball gown: the “princess” cut, featuring a fitted bodice and full, fluffy skirt. This style complements most body types and keeps focus on the dress, but can be overwhelming on slight figures. A-line: More reserved than a full ball gown, this cut maintains a fitted bodice, but instead of protruding abruptly at the waist, the gown gradually transitions to a flowing, full skirt, often with a train. This cut compliments basically any body type, while still allowing the dress to shine.

Mermaid: A cut for the truly confident, mermaid gowns fit from chest to knee, then fluff out at the bottom. Although some takes on this cut flare out before the knee, the main distinction from a fit and flare is the way the dress transitions. Instead of gradually flaring in a seamless line, the change is sudden and fluffy like the ball gown. This style is great for curvy women who want to show off their figure.

Photo submitted by Black Diamond Bridal

Sheath (column): This straightforward cut has rigid lines that lengthen your appearance and leave no extra room for a large bust or hips. Adding detailed lace or beading and other details can provide a unique twist. This style is good for athletic or H-frame women who want a minimalist appearance.

Fit and flare (trumpet): fitted from chest to mid-thigh, where the skirt begins to diverge and flare out for a dramatic finish. This cut is excellent for

hourglass figures and petites who want to accentuate curves or pears who want to downplay their thighs.

Haven of love Corrina Wright and Brian Batchelder use two ceremonies to meet wedding needs Story by Peninsula Daily News Photos by Cassie Johnson Photography

THE BEGINNING Corinne “Corrina” Wright and Brian Batchelder met in the summer of 2015 through mutual friends. Brian is in the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed in Port Angeles at the time. Corrina is a pharmacy technician and was working in Sequim. They fell in love at first sight and, when Brian transferred to Anchorage, Alaska, Corrina soon joined him. It was there they began their life together. Brian proposed to Corrina in July of 2018 at Byron Glacier in Alaska. THE CEREMONIES Instead of trying to get everything they needed into one event, Corrina and Brian held an intimate ceremony in Alaska, then followed up with a large wedding on the Olympic Peninsula. Corrina and Brian were officially married in a small civil ceremony on Halloween in 2018 at the Animal Wildlife Conservation Center in Girdwood, Alaska, where they dressed in their favorite cosplay “Game of Thrones” characters, Stannis Baratheon and Melisandre of Asshai. In the middle of planning a larger, formal wedding at Troll Haven in Sequim, they were transferred to Santa Rosa, California, in July of 2019.

Troll Haven Bandy Farms is a magical 200 acre farm. The land is scattered with everything from a castle to a cottage. Wood carvings and various other forms of art feel so natural in this setting its as if they grew there with the trees. You feel as if you fell right into the pages of a fantasy novel from the moment you step foot on the farm. The wedding party stayed in the gatekeeper’s castle directly across from the antique barn reception hall. This venue fit perfectly with their “Game of Thrones”-themed wedding. 6  JANUARY 2020 | PENINSULA WEDDINGS

“We knew right away we wanted to do our wedding at Troll Haven because we consider Washington our home state and we absolutely fell in love with the venue from afar,” Corrina said. “It’s so magical and completely complemented our theme. “The managers at Troll Haven, Amanda and Jarrod, were excellent to work with. They were there at a moment’s notice if we needed anything, which was so helpful. They are great people and I would recommend their space to anyone. Staying in the The Gate Keeper’s Castle the night before and of the wedding was not only complementary to our wedding experience but also very convenient. “We got married in an intimate ceremony the first time in Alaska at a gorgeous location on our favorite holiday, dressed as characters from our favorite books. Then, we were fortunate enough to do the traditional wedding we always wanted with our friends and family in this beautiful place the next year! We couldn’t ask for anything more.” THE HEART OF IT ALL “Looking back, we are so happy we were able to put a personal touch into every aspect of our wedding,” Brian said. “It really made the night special and unique. Choosing vendors that worked with us so openly was key to the night’s success.” “Coordinating a big move during the whole yearand-a-half process of planning our wedding was a major challenge,” Corrina said. “But looking back, we wouldn’t have done it any other way. We planned it out well and chose most of our vendors the year prior to moving so we could focus on all the other things that come with a military transfer. “We love the Olympic Peninsula and are so happy we chose local vendors for everything,” Corrina said. “This whole process was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will always treasure,” Brian added. “I cannot thank our photographer, the lovely and talented Cassie Johnson, enough. Her guidance and direction on our special day was so appreciated. She sent me ‘sneak peek’ shots the next day, which was awesome and got me so excited to see the rest!” —Corrina Batchelder

That Takes the Cake made a custom two-tiered “Game of Thrones” dragonscale, champagne-flavored cake. The cake toppers were Funko Pop figures representing the “Game of Thrones” characters Brian and Corrina dressed as at their civil ceremony the year before, Stannis Baratheon and Melisandre, a nod to their first ceremony on Halloween of last year. Peninsula Daily News | Sequim Gazette

Corrina and Brian are both megafans of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series by George R.R. Martin, as well as the television show “Game of Thrones,” which is based on the books. Their wedding was infused with many “Game of Thrones” elements, including the dragon scale cake made by local Sequim bakery That Takes the Cake. They also sealed their love letters in the first book they connected on, “A World of Ice and Fire.” Corrina’s father John Wright wrote and performed a song in her honor.

The Big Day Corrina Wright and Brian Batchelder held their formal wedding on Nov. 9, 2019, at Troll Haven Bandy Farms in Gardener. Remember those “geode” rocks from when you were a kid? They were hollow rocks lined inside with crystals, such as amethyst, that you could break open to get fun, glittering chunks of gems. What does this have to do with cakes, you ask? They’re the newest trend in wedding cake design. Think of the cake as the rock — the baker cuts away a section of the cake, creating a cavernous opening, then lines it with rock candy, using frosting as the glue. “We’re kind of getting away from rustic [styles],” said Sue Boucher, who co-owns That Takes the Cake in Sequim with her husband, Paul. “We’re going to more metallics.” Along with requests for geode cakes, gold, rose gold and silver leaf are being used to accent cakes. “Older brides are still looking for classic elegance,” Boucher said, but younger couples want something original that reflects their personality. “Sixty to 70 percent of our wedding customers come in as a couple,” Boucher said. It’s much easier to select your cake options when you’re both there to weigh in from the beginning. Unsure what you want? You’re not alone. Some people come to Boucher with examples from Pinterest and other idea sources, but most arrive with a vague idea of their color palette or desired mood, then go from there. Others come in knowing they want to match a design element from their dress or other detail and allow that to inform the cake’s design.

“Pick a shape that you like,” Boucher said. Shape determines much of the cake’s “feel.” Boucher has several books featuring past cake projects so couples can mix and match ideas. Once you have determined the cake’s look, it’s time to pick the (arguably) most important part — the flavors. Multi-tiered cakes often have one flavor per layer, but a single flavor often simplifies things. According to Boucher, approximately 25 to 30 percent of wedding cake customers choose a small topper for the cake cutting ceremony, then serve guests cupcakes. Cupcakes are less expensive than a full-size cake. Plus, they have the added benefit of providing more flavor options to guests with less overall mess. That Takes the Cake has many inventive flavors, including their overwhelmingly popular “almond poppy seed” and “champagne” flavored cakes, usually done with buttercream frosting and flavored fillings. There’s something about the almond cake, available with or without poppy seeds, that screams “wedding.” It’s lightly sweet and much more interesting than vanilla, but it’s not distracting. Even if you have no idea what you want yet, it’s important to order your cake at least six months in advance. And don’t worry — you don’t need to know all the details of your cake to get it ordered. You can put down a deposit that saves the date for your cake, then finalize your design as things come together.

Picking perfect petals Selecting wedding florals By Shawna Dixson, Peninsula Daily News

Usually, the flowers are picked up or delivered the day before the wedding and kept in water in a cool place. Arbor installs are done day-of. Anderson warns that if you’re picking up your flowers, have an enclosed vehicle that can hold the flowers upright and won’t be damaged if water spills. Bring some boxes or other items to mitigate splashing. Halley Jacob Photography Bouquet by Fullness of Joy Floral Wild Flower Bridal Bouquet

Even though the preferred color palettes and applications change with each year’s trends, almost every wedding uses flowers — for wedding party bouquets and boutonnieres, hung on arbors, lining the aisle, in the aisle, in people’s hair, on the cake, on the tables — and even the tightest budgets find room for at least the time-honored bridal bouquet. Conceptually, choosing a great set of flowers for your wedding may seem simple, but the vast selection of colors, sizes, textures and forms available may make the process a little daunting, especially amid all the other decisions that come with planning a wedding. That’s where relying on a professional florist comes in really handy. “When I do a wedding, I sit down with them [the couple] and walk them through what their ‘big day’ will look like,” said Brandi Anderson, owner of Fullness of Joy Floral. “What are they expecting? What do they want?” Anderson explains that, when designing a wedding, it’s best to start with the mood. How do you want the ceremonies to feel — cheery, surreal, romantic, casual, elegant, brooding ... ? Descriptions like these inform everything, from dress style and color palette to the types of flowers you use and how you use them. “They always come in with inspiration photos, usually Pinterest, which is a blessing, but sometimes also a con,” Anderson said. Many of the photos online have fake, dyed or spray painted flowers, or the photos have had a filter put on them to change the real colors.

If you’re looking for inspiration, keep the limitations of real flowers in mind. After the mood and overall color palette have been decided, Anderson starts with the bride’s bouquet. “When you think about holding it, what size are you thinking? Is it wild or smaller?” Anderson said. The size almost immediately invokes a sense of form. Is the bouquet going to be large and airy or small and compact? Will it be symmetrical or artistically random? Do you want it to cascade? How much of your dress are you comfortable hiding with flowers? Brides usually leave the next stage, selecting the actual flowers, to the discretion of the florist. “Usually a bride says ‘I want dahlias in it,’ or I ‘don’t want [a certain flower],’ ” Anderson said. “They always have a ‘main’ [flower], whether it be a blush rose or sunflower.” But they usually let her freely select what to use from there. “The bride usually wants a lot of different textures [in her bouquet],” Anderson said. “They’ll show you a picture and there are maybe three or five different greens in it.” These are the kinds of details that really contribute to evoking a specific concept or mood. From this point on, the decision process gets much easier; other flower arrangements at the wedding can use the bridal bouquet as a sort of template, either to match or complement. Once a couple determines what they want to order, they put down a “save the date” deposit that goes toward their flowers. Anderson recommends ordering flowers at least a month before the wedding.
