Contents Head of School Message
I feel very proud to be writing this message for the yearbook after what has been another challenging but also extremely successful year. As what is now becoming a hallmark of the St Andrews Green Valley ethos, our school community has once again risen to the occasion to face a year that started off with online learning but ended in the full swing of what we hope is now our ‘normal’ again - school trips and events, parent workshops, sports fixtures, arts days and more. Perhaps my favourite part of the year was seeing a once-more action packed school calendar, filled to the brim with events across Primary and Secondary. After 2 years, we saw the return of competitive sports fixtures and we were proud to host the Primary and U13 Invitational Games, where we welcomed schools from Bangkok and Hua Hin. School events returned, including Drama performances, Primary Learning Journeys and a dedicated Arts Day for Secondary students. A real highlight of the year was our International Day where we celebrated the incredible diversity of the school community. I was reminded of what makes Green Valley a truly unique school to be part of our staff, parents and students from all corners of the world.

This year we were also very proud to become the first school in Thailand to achieve the Wellbeing Award for Schools. This award is UK accredited and it recognises the immense support structure that we have in place for the community. The inspectors commented on how impressed they were that wellbeing and pastoral support was second nature to our staff, and that the ethos of nurturing happy students was evident throughout the school. Amongst other achievements, we were also recognised once again for our students’ exceptional academic results. Seven of our Year 11 students received the Pearson Excellence Awards, which recognised students who received a Grade 7 or higher (A-A*) in at least 5 of their IGCSE examinations. Our Year 13s have also received remarkable offers from universities around the world, including University of Westminster, University of Buckingham and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. At the Year 13 Graduation, it was clear to me that not only are our students academically successful, but also confident, independent and well-equipped adults who are ready to take on the world.
We finished the year with the unveiling of the Green Valley 3 Be’s; Be Adventurous, Be Brilliant, and Be Happy. These are statements that we feel reflects the life of the school, but also the type of students that we nurture at Green Valley. When I reflect on all we have achieved this year, it is truly evident that students and staff have: • Been adventurous - taken risks and challenged themselves beyond their comfort zone • Been brilliant - worked continuously to be the best they can be in all areas of their school life • Been happy - although the year has been full of challenges, the community has prioritised student wellbeing and has continued to ensure that our school is a happy place to be. After all, a happy child is a successful child. After 17 years at St Andrews International School, Green Valley, I am proud of the school that we have evolved into and the students who leave us. I have no doubt that this success will continue under the new leadership of Charlie Grayhurst, alongside the exceptional body of staff that we already have. I am immensely grateful to parents and staff for their support over the years and have no doubt that I will be back to celebrate the inevitable success of the school in the years to come! At this time of year, I always love looking back and reflecting on what we have achieved in the primary school. This year we have continued to face a number of challenges and obstacles because of the pandemic and I am sure you will agree with me that at times it has not been easy. However, like previous years, we have met these challenges with determination, resilience and positivity. Now at the end of term 3, the school is once more a bustling hive of activity and the calendar is full of learning journeys, school trips and special events. I am so happy that we can finally invite parents into school and the children can share their learning and experiences with them. I am therefore confident that we are now back on track and can look to the future with a renewed sense of optimism and excitement.
As the year draws to a close it is traditional to reflect upon the success that we have achieved. This however has not been a traditional year so my reflections are about our non traditional successes.
Message
There are a couple of areas that I am particularly proud of this year and deserve special mention. Firstly, we have continued to focus on health and wellbeing and successfully achieved the International Wellbeing Award for the school’s excellence in this area. Our children have a much deeper understanding of the importance of a healthy and balanced lifestyle and how this is the basis for success in all areas. I am so pleased that, after so long learning from behind a screen, our children are spending much more time learning outdoors and taking part in outdoor activities such as forest school, mountain biking and our assembly walks. Research shows that children who have more opportunities and time to explore and learn outdoors demonstrate better physical and emotional wellbeing and thrive in all areas. This year we have also worked hard towards achieving the Green School Gold-level award and have seen many new environmental projects introduced around the school. Our Primary Eco Councillors have continued to do an excellent job educating us on the importance of caring for and protecting our local and global environment. We now have our ownGgreen Valley Eco Code, which will help keep our focus on important issues such as recycling, sustainable living and saving energy. Our Eco Schools programme has also helped children develop

We `began the year online after delaying the start of the school year by 2 weeks. We stayed online for the first 12 weeks of term 1 and then returned to school in “bubbles”. We were the first school in Rayong to be allowed to return to school and we did this successfully with very few Covid cases penetrating our defenses. their leadership skills, make environmentally sound decisions and have the confidence and belief that they can make longlasting change in the world. I hope you will agree with me that during this final term we have managed to bounce back from the difficulties and challenges we have faced and we should all be very proud of this. We have worked hard as a community to re-establish all the events and experiences that we have missed and are so important to all of us. Despite spending almost half of the school year online, Primary children have had the opportunity to successfully complete LAMDA exams; perform in drama productions and music concerts; invite their parents into school for learning journeys; compete in our primary invitational games sports event and friendly sports fixtures against other schools. We have also seen the reintroduction of whole school events such as World Book Day and Earth Day. However, the highlight for me was our International Day, as it was the first time in three years we could all truly come together as a community. This day really showed us that as a community, we are stronger than ever and St Andrew’s future looks very bright when we work and join together in this way.
Our major successes were resilience, flexibility, adaptability and a sense of humour. When faced with challenges that are often beyond our control, we soon learned that the best thing to do is to control what we can control. I am very proud of the way that our entire school community met each challenge thrown at us with positivity and determination. No challenge was too difficult and, even though it often took extra effort and a great deal of lateral thinking, we always found a way. By term 2 things gradually began to return to normal. We began to play sports fixtures, there was also a drama production and LAMDA monologues. By term 3 we were once again enjoying swimming galas, school trips and different festivals such as International Day. Our movement back towards normality has been controlled and gradual but also continuous. For all the challenges that Covid has thrown at us, we have learnt valuable lessons. We have become more skilled with technology and have learned a great deal from being online.
We have also learned how valuable face-to-face interactions are and the value of ensuring that we stay in touch with others, not just through technology but through personal interactions. We now move forward towards the 2022 – 2023 school year with optimism and a renewed sense of energy that things are getting better. It is clear that we have turned the corner and we are returning to more normal times. For the new school year we will return stronger and better equipped to face the challenges that lay ahead. Congratulations to all of our students, staff and parents on showing great resilience and making 2021 – 2022 another very successful school year!

In collaboration with the Student welfare prefect, the academic prefects held a Secondary trivia competition for years 7 and 8. Primary liaison Entertainment I had the opportunity to manage the talent show in term 2 with another entertainment prefect, thus I learned to work collaboratively with other people. I think being a prefect is a good opportunity to create more events in our school and entertain our students. -Lydia

Taking into account the global pandemic and its impact on our school life, such as remote learning and social distancing, we had to learn at school using the ‘bubble system’ but we did not let it drown our spirits. Instead, we were galvanised by these hardships and the legacy of our predecessors to become better leaders and continue to drive the school forward.
This year we have finally completed the long process of developing new school sweaters. This has been a project long overdue that had been delayed by Covid-19 and the issues that went with that. As this had been our number one goal to achieve by the end of the year and this was our proudest accomplishment.
Despite the delayed start to the year, we were able to capitalise on opportunities to hold events for both primary and secondary, with our first initiative being the provision of the head students social media account as a means of communication with our secondary students. Island community coordinator I helped organise the Island Community football competition for primary students during lunch. It ran over two days and it went really well. It was an opportunity, set up by Koustav, that gave students a chance to run around and be active after a long period of home learning.
Environmental I organised our school community to donate their old clothes over a period of two weeks, then in the final week of school before the April break, we had a clothing sale. Overall, we made over 5,000 baht in one day which was very impressive. The proceeds are then going to the Boon Choo Foundation for handicapped children.
Student Council It has been a busy year for student council. Back in term 1 council members got together to make posters for the lunchtime movie fundraiser. Members also made an electric fan with the help of the DT department. Student council also played a huge role in the poppy appeal, organising appeal walks and costing donations. The highlight of the student council’s year was the launch of the brand new sweatshirts! Overall it has been a great opportunity for students to work with the others, collaborate on projects and see ideas come to fruition.

Green Council Environmental Action at GV and Application for Eco-Schools Award Covid 19 could not put a stop to environmental action at GV. Our Environmental Strategic group of Mrs Gilbert (Geography and Careers), Ms Ferrier (Year 5) Mrs Kinsella (Secondary Science), Mrs Thierry (MFL), Ms Ginny (EAL) Mr Shield (Forest School and EAL) Ms Bas (Dutch Teacher) made a real team effort leading various eco initiatives and working towards achieving the Eco-schools award from WWF Thailand. It was great to see the Green council move into its second year with student representatives from Year 4-13. The Primary and Secondary Green Council met online during Term 1 then in bubbles achieving great outcomes in the face of challenge. In 2022, staff and students have been involved in a wide range of projects; recycling, eco crafting, beach cleaning, creating a tree nursery, composting, nature walks, forest school, gardening, cycling and sustainable clothing sales. We have raised awareness of energy conservation, and staff across the school have played their part in embedding green matters in the curriculum. We have connected to the wider community through our Eco-board, our student-led Green Matters website, our line group and facebook and Instagram accounts. Head student of the Green Council, Mahiro, produced our Green Newsletters updating on all our projects, and students connected with local organisations; Hand-to-Hand and Ban Chang Beach Buddies to set up community links. Term 2 saw bake sales, smoothie sales, ice cream sales and non-uniform days to raise funds for our Mangrove afforestation project. The first planting of 150 trees took place in May 2022 on Koh Mun Nai in partnership with LoveWildlife, Thailand. The intention is to return and add to the Mangrove forest each year. We have submitted our Eco-school application to WWF Thailand. We look forward to building on our environmental actions in the year ahead.

Charity Action Group
Dutch Stream
21/22 has been an action packed year for our work with charities in the local community. In September, we did a food hand out where 15,000 baht of food was given to locals in the Mapachan Lake area. This handout was working with our partners at Pattana Sports Club . In this month, we also created 15,000 baht of food parcels that we made alongside Mercy charity and donated to people who lived in the slum housing. October saw the group make donations to the needy in local village Ban Chak Maak, where essential supplies and clothes were handed out. There was also a food donation sent to Baan Kru Boonchu, which is a school that caters for children with special needs such as autism and cystic fibrosis. November was the annual remembrance collection, where we donated over 5,000 to British Legion. Year 3 managed a wonderful project also in this month, where they donated toys and Lego to Father Ray’s Children Village. In December, there was a 10,000B donation to Gateways Builders Centre to provide books and essentials for the children on Sangklaburi Border. The Sangklaburi Border Team is an organization that helps educate children of Myanmar refugees located at the Thai-Myanmar border. Also in December, we were able to sponsor 2 children through school. These children came from a very difficult background and were trafficked. They now have a chance of a stable home life and an education, this was in collaboration with Hand to Hand. February saw food donations to Father Ray Children Village and sets of text books to schools in Mae Sot. In March, Students raised money for the “animal army’ campaign to get street dogs rabies vaccines. April saw a donation of laptops to the Take Care Kids Foundation, which will be used in local schools. May there is a donation of 20,000 baht to a school so that they can fix the dormitories in Mae Sot. These facilities are mainly used by Myanmar refugees, who have been displaced from their own country. There have been many wonderful worthwhile causes that many of our school community have supported. Thanks to all those people who have contributed for helping and making a difference.
It has been another busy year in our Dutch stream at St. Andrews Green Valley. We started the new school year with welcoming Roué, Dewi, Olivia and Storm online, soon followed by Odette, Alice and James. They have adapted quickly and we are very happy that they and their parents are now part of our Dutch speaking community. Luckily, we made it back to school in time to celebrate Sinterklaas together. The students made anonymous surprise gifts for each other and wrote a poem for our ‘Pakjesmiddag’. Our students’ good behaviour over the last year was again rewarded by Sinterklaas, who came in person to our Dutch playground with lots of sweet treats and presents! At the end of the first term we said goodbye to Mr. Daan and welcomed Ms. Stefanie, who arrived full of ambition and loads of experience. Stefanie would like to thank all the students and parents for the warm welcome she received. Although Covid-19 was still lurking around the corner, we managed to make it through the second term with hybrid learning, which again proved to be a challenging period for both students and teachers. After a short end of term break we were thrilled to finally have our first Dutch Stream community events again on the school grounds since the start of the pandemic. King’s Day turned out to be an exciting day for both students, teachers, parents and even grandparents. The weather was good, the Dutch and Belgian snacks even better and both parents and children played different ‘Koningsspelen’ in their orange outfits. At the end of the day, you could tell by the smiles that it was way too long ago that the Dutch Stream had celebrated together. Now that the academic year draws to a close it is time for us to say goodbye to Willem, Eva and Wesley who will graduate from Year 13. They have been a part of the Dutch Stream and GV for 16 years! We also say goodbye to Emilio and Aurelio, who have been with us for nearly three years. We wish all these students and their families the best of luck in the Netherlands and Belgium and we hope that they will cherish good memories of St. Andrews Green Valley.

Youth Club This year has seen a lot of exciting changes over in the Youth Club building. The renovations downstairs have created two fantastic new closed in spaces, ideal for a plethora of activities. The activities schedule has been completely overhauled for the 2021-22 academic year. Reclaiming furniture, mural painting, spray painting and tie dyeing have all featured for all age groups. Students have been learning loads of fun new skills. Looking forward, we have many exciting projects coming in next year including skate ramps, a pump track and a mini golf course. All of these projects will see students getting their hands dirty and really getting stuck in!
CAS
(Creativity, Activity and Service) Once again we have had a very challenging and different CAS year. With the delayed start to the year due to Covid our students proved once again how adaptable they are and chose to focus primarily on the Creativity and Activity strands. Some of our students turned to online language courses, learning to play instruments or home workouts, whilst others turned to the more unusual e.g. learning morse code, Java Script or British Sign Language. As Thailand gradually started to open up, the opportunity to take part in Service became more available and our students have demonstrated in abundance their willingness to get involved. The year 12’s were given the opportunity to take their First Aid course and also to complete a lifeguarding qualification. A number of our student lifeguards are now regulars at the early morning squad swimming or at events like the Primary Invitational Games, where they proudly wear their yellow lifeguard t-shirts. As a core component of the IB Diploma course, CAS encourages students to solve problems, cooperate with others and communicate effectively. Whether within school or outside in the community, our students demonstrate a commitment to helping others through such action as peer mentoring, involvement on the Green Council and supporting primary students with ‘Science in a Bag’ at lunchtimes. The GV philosophy of helping our local community charities continued with a number of fundraising events, whilst the CAS students also focused on a number of additional projects which have been very successful this year. The remote reading project, which was initiated by Mahiro in October 2020, has received international recognition when she recently won the prestigious Green Schools Global Young Green Leader Award 2021 from the Green School Bali. It was an incredible achievement and recognition for her outstanding commitment to the CAS principles throughout Year 12 &13. Mahiro has just graduated from IB but has put in place the structure, and a good team of Year 12 CAS students, to ensure this project continues for many years to come. All Year 12 students have also been fundraising for an environmental organisation based on Koh Tao called Roctopus. Our aim was to raise enough money to be able to build and sink a concrete structure, on which coral is planted, which will significantly help with coral restoration in this area. Next year we hope to be able to also continue with this theme but move to a site on Koh Mun Nau. This is closer to GV, so students will be able to visit more easily and mangrove planting can also continue as a CAS activity. Every student on the IBDP has a different CAS journey. Students challenge themselves to take on new and varied experiences. Whether it’s learning to be a barista, learning to free dive or simply being part of the first GV Senior Boys Volleyball team to play against another school, these are all new skills and activities which they can either build on or draw upon when faced with other challenges in the future. Well done to all Year 12 and 13 students this year.

Forest School
Cubs We were delighted to see our students back in Forest School this year. Our forest environment has continued to grow and thrive. Along with the normal scheduled lessons and activities, we did “Hunger Games” with Year 7, Soldier Stew and Shadufs with Year 5 and Fire with Year 6. The highlight of the year was Banana ‘Fffritters’ with Reception and dinosaur hunting with KG. We said a sad goodbye to Emilio who is returning to Belgium. He has been a constant presence in Forest School and has really grown in his confidence and abilities over the last 3 years. We wish him all the best for the future. Looking forward to a bigger and better 2022/23!

Our Cubs toddler group has had a huge year with record numbers of families coming to experience our wonderful school. The children have really enjoyed coming to our playgroup as we provide a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities including; singing and dancing! During the session children learn to play, share and interact with other children as well as with other adults. Next year will see our playgroup continue to grow with new activities, new experiences and new things for our youngest members of the community to do!

Drama LAMDA It’s been an incredibly busy year with a lot of Drama Productions finally taking place! Despite the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune we managed to put on some cracking shows and even resurrect the long dormant LAMDA programme and include a new event the monologue competition which we are definitely making a regular yearly event.

Our fascinating range of dramatic offerings have included our year 10 production of ‘DNA’ about a group of dysfunctional teenagers, a year 11 performance of ‘Anna Alone’, a play about the 3 characters who live unharmoniously inside the mind of Anna and who can forget the plethora of productions that our Primary School put on including Year 1’s ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’ Year 2&3’s ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and Year 6’s fabulous retelling of ‘Krindlekrax’.
