Cathy Catrambone PhD, RN, FAAN 2015–2017 President

In every organization’s history there are definitive moments, points at which profound changes occur. Author Malcolm Gladwell defined the “tipping point” as the point at which a series of changes becomes significant enough to cause a larger, more important change. Today we are witnessing a tipping point for STTI. The 2015-2017 biennium represents the convergence of milestone accomplishments that will impact the success and direction of the organization well into the future. During this biennium, the STTI Board of Directors, as duly elected representatives of the membership and stewards of the organization, have provided leadership and worked collaboratively with the STTI CEO and staff in operationalizing my 2015-2017 Presidential Call to Action, Influence to Advance Global Health and Nursing.

During my two years of service as President, it has been my privilege to meet and engage with members from around the world. Wherever I have traveled, members have demonstrated the passion, creativity, and commitment exemplified by STTI’s mission of advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. Nurses as health professionals possess a deep understanding of what is required to create quality healthcare and impact positive health outcomes. During this biennium I was inspired by and proud of the engagement of members, chapters, and regions in contributing to the four areas of my 2015-2017 Presidential Call to Action: influence through advocacy, policy, philanthropy, and lifelong learning. STTI members are creating positive change every day and their work is the greatest asset of the organization.

Revised the STTI 2014-2020 Strategic Plan Responded to Board key performance indicators and metrics quarterly and annually Approved the Building Corporation’s Master Plan Completed the Global Advisory Panel on the Future of Nursing and Midwifery’s (GAPFON®) global regional stakeholders meetings. The GAPFON® Report was released in July 2017. The next phase will focus on implementation of identified strategies. (www.gapfon.org) Developed guidelines for use of Sigma brand, name, and logo by other groups Launched Sigma rebranding including new logo at the 44th Biennial Convention following an extensive marketing research process Conducted an international executive search and hired Dr. Elizabeth Madigan as STTI’s fourth CEO Created Global Regional Councils to provide an international presence in each region to expand global initiatives, services, and support to chapters and members

As I reflect on this biennium I wish to thank the STTI Board of Directors, committees, task forces, advisory councils, chapter leaders, members, and the headquarters staff for the outstanding commitment, energy, and thoughtful and generous contributions you have made to STTI. I wish to thank STTI Chief Executive Officer Dr. Patricia Thompson for her 10 years of distinguished leadership and service to the organization and we wish her great happiness in retirement. I extend a warm welcome to our incoming CEO Dr. Elizabeth Madigan and wish her much success. Finally, I am deeply grateful for the honor and privilege to serve you, the members, and the organization for the past two years. I have taken great pride in representing the Society in the global arena, establishing and building relationships with members and stakeholders, and expressing gratitude for our impact in influencing global health and the profession. I remain committed to service in STTI as I transition to the Past Presidents Council. As I conclude my term, I am confident that President-Elect Beth Baldwin Tigges will be exceptional leading the organization, given her impressive history of service in and extensive knowledge of STTI, nursing, and healthcare.

Summary of Board of Directors’ Actions 2015-2017 The Board of Directors, as duly elected representatives of the membership, bears the governance role and has leadership responsibility for STTI. As stewards of the values, vision, mission, and principles of the organization, the board fulfilled its obligations in the four areas of the 2015-2017 Presidential Call to Action, Influence to Advance Global Health and Nursing. Under the leadership of Cathy Catrambone, PhD, RN, FAAN the board exercised due diligence in carrying out its mandate by providing oversight and support for organizational actions in these areas. STTI owes a debt of gratitude to these leaders for guiding the organization with integrity, prudence, and wisdom.

ACTIONS RELATED TO BOARD OVERSIGHT • Established organizational priorities for 2015-2017 “Influence to Advance Global Health and Nursing” • Appointed and defined anticipated outcomes for three elected committees, and seven advisory councils and task forces • Conducted phone, email, and face-to-face communication briefings and dialogue with committees, advisory councils, task forces, chapter leaders, and members on organizational issues and strategic directions

• Ratified actions taken by the 2015 House of Delegates • Approved revisions to chapter bylaws per 2015 House of Delegates action • Accepted and acted on submitted recommendations from the 2015 House of Delegates • Reviewed Mission and Vision, Board Guiding Principles, and STTI Values statement • Reviewed and revised the 2014-2020 Strategic Plan

2015-2017 CEO SUMMARY This biennium marks significant advancement in realizing the honor society’s mission and vision through action. Volunteer leaders, members, chapters, and the 92 professional staff members at headquarters have implemented activities to move the Strategic Plan 2014-2020 forward. Guided by board policy and direction setting, the staff established goals and outcomes for each year of the biennium and executed and engaged hundreds of thousands of actions on behalf of the honor society. We all feel a sense of commitment and privilege to be making a difference for the nursing profession.

GOAL 1: GROW IN VALUE FOR MEMBERS AND ALL NURSES WORLDWIDE WHO ARE PURSUING EXCELLENCE. • In this biennium, STTI provided service to more than 135,000 members residing in 96 countries. Comprehensive recruitment and retention plans are in place to continue growth. • Added 27 new chapters and conducted seven amendments increasing the total number of chapters to 531. • Engaged new members in 47 webcasts to review STTI resources, services, and products. • Engaged nursing students through Student Central webpages. • Increased applications for chapter charters from developing honor societies outside North America. • During this biennium, five chapters outside North America were chartered in addition to one charter amendment: Psi Alpha-at-Large Chapter The University of Notre Dame Australia Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia Curtin University Bentley, Western Australia, Australia Edith Cowan University Joondalup, Western Australia, Australia Chartered on 13 August 2016 Psi Beta Chapter Silliman University Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, Philippines Chartered on 23 August 2016

GOAL 2: PROMOTE AND CELEBRATE NURSING SCHOLARSHIP, LEADERSHIP, AND SERVICE WORLDWIDE. • Donations to the STTI Foundation for Nursing’s Leadership Fund made possible US $16,941 in membership subsidies to 380 new inductees and members in Africa, Asia, Latin America/Caribbean, Middle East, and North America who seek financial assistance to join or renew their dues. • Donations to the STTI Foundation for Nursing’s Leadership Fund made possible US $65,000 in leadership education grants to 72 nurses from regions of Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, and Oceania so they could participate in research congresses, Leadership Connection, and the 44th Biennial Convention. (Twenty percent increase in grant funding over last biennium.) • Donations to the STTI Foundation for Nursing’s Research Permanent Fund and Research Restricted Fund made possible US $459,000 in research grants to 77 nurses conducting research in the regions of Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, Latin America/Caribbean, North America, and Oceania. (Twentyfive percent increase in grant funding over last biennium.) • Recognized and thanked STTI volunteers during Volunteer Week.

2015-2017 CEO SUMMARY

• Encouraged chapters to celebrate their successes by submitting a Showcase of Regional Excellence application. • Encouraged chapters and members to promote and participate in 90 Minutes of Service commemorating Founders' Day. • Received 205 award and honorary member nominations from all global regions. • Received 102 Chapter Key Award nominations. • Published bimonthly issues of the Journal of Nursing Scholarship and Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing. • Published Reflections on Nursing Leadership online with updates almost every day. • The Virginia Henderson Global Nursing e-Repository expanded its participation opportunities beyond individual nurses and schools of nursing to include national and international nursing organizations. • The repository has added Altmetric® tracking allowing submitting authors the opportunity to track online discussions surrounding their posted works. • Per Google Analytics there has been a 59% increase in returning visitors to the repository this biennium. • Developed new multicourse continuing nursing education programs and revised/enhanced existing course offerings. STTI is continuing to offer free and discounted education as a member benefit with more than 13,000 free courses taken during this biennium. • Continued successful leadership academies and institutes. • Developed and updated a variety of programs for faculty development through the STTI/Chamberlain College of Nursing Center for Excellence in Nursing Education (CENE). • Launched the Institute for Global Healthcare Leadership. • Created a new online career mentoring program with a Hugoton Foundation grant given to STTI Foundation of Nursing.

GOAL 3: BUILD PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIVE ENDEAVORS TO ADVANCE THE MISSION OF THE SOCIETY. • Added more than 40 new funding and organizational partners from around the world. • As part of our ongoing commitment to support the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals, hosted two presentations at the United Nations, inviting several collaborating partners to co-present. These actions helped to meet STTI’ United Nations Economic and Social Council special consultative status obligations. • Developed job descriptions for UN volunteer staff and a webinar that features their work. • Expanded global engagement and represented STTI at the World Health Organization, United Nations, and the International Council of Nurses to further advance STTI’s mission and vision. • Completed the Global Advisory Panel on the Future of Nursing and Midwifery’s (GAPFON®) global regional stakeholders’ meetings. Report released July 2017. The next phase will focus on implementation of identified strategies. (www.gapfon.org) • Continuing partnership with the International Network for Doctoral Education in Nursing (INDEN).

GOAL 4: SUSTAIN AND ADVANCE THE RESOURCES OF THE SOCIETY. • Prepared and monitored budgets to preserve and enhance the fiscal position of STTI and its subsidiaries (See Treasurer’s Report). • During this biennium, Nursing Knowledge International enjoyed a steady increase in website visitors and revenue. Some new and innovative marketing tactics along with the new website have been great assets. Adoptions of STTI books for school of nursing courses continue to grow steadily. • Confirmed 24 new Fellows in the Heritage Society and Philanthropic Caring Society as of 30 August 2017. • Updated technology to state of the art solutions and cloud based technology. This has provided a tighter alignment of IT and business plus the automation of highly labor-intensive processes and procedures. This biennium has focused on leadership to achieve outcomes for global health. By learning from and about STTI and the environment in which it operates, focusing on priorities and aligning operations and vision, the staff has been an integral part of moving from vision to action. As CEO of this exceptional organization, I am impressed with the dedication and commitment of the staff, volunteer leaders, and members. It has been a true honor to serve as your CEO for the last 10 years. Although retiring, I will continue to be an active member of STTI and look forward to continuing to support our mission - advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service.
