Chapter Mailing 2020

Page 1

Headquarters Update Dear Chapter Leaders, Greetings from Sigma headquarters! We hope that you find some helpful information in this mailing that was created to share important data about your chapter, remind you about upcoming training opportunities and deadlines, and share about programs and resources that Sigma has created to aid in your membership and recruitment efforts. Sigma’s chapters are the strength of the organization and we can’t thank you enough for taking on this leadership role and showing your dedication to honoring and supporting the nursing profession. Chapter leaders work to recruit new members, engage their groups, and introduce them to this community of outstanding nurses. You help your members realize that Sigma is more than a line on a résumé — that their involvement in Sigma enables them to be nurse leaders and increase their impact on the lives of others. As you know, affiliation with Sigma provides opportunities for enrichment and lifelong resources for professional growth and renewal. Membership in Sigma begins as an honor, and continued membership provides support to nurses throughout their careers. The Sigma staff continues to focus on what we can do to support you as a member and as a leader of your chapter. We hope to have the chance to connect with you at Chapter Leadership Connection in September! We encourage you and your officers to contact us to share your chapter’s successes, concerns, and questions so that we can continue to help build your chapter presence and increase our impact on the nursing community. Please let us know how we can best support you as a valued member and volunteer of Sigma.

Call to Action and Showcase of Regional Excellence Presidential Call to Action Each biennium, Sigma installs a new president at the international level. At the 45th Biennial Convention, we proudly installed Richard Ricciardi, PhD, CRNP, FAANP, FAAN, and introduced him as the 33rd president of Sigma. Each president presents a call to action to help guide members and chapters as we strive to fulfill our mission. President Ricciardi’s call asks us to “infuse joy” to achieve Sigma’s vision of transforming global healthcare. As Sigma members, we are well positioned to infuse joy into practice in clinical, administrative, research, and policy settings. President Ricciardi’s call to action highlights three essential elements – the ABCs – that promote joy: Awareness, Balance & Purpose, and Co-creation.

three elements of INFUSING JOY Awareness

Balance & Purpose

Co-creation

Awareness includes a clear understanding of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to fulfill our professional responsibilities and achieve our goals. When we are competent, confident, and have mastery over our work, joy can flourish.

Achieving balance and purpose requires us to make time for creativity and serendipity, mindfulness and rest, activities that foster health and well-being, as well as gratitude, service to others, and philanthropy.

Co-creating includes relationship building, using team science, recognizing interdependencies, having a shared mental organizational model, taking pride in one’s work, and instituting policy initiatives to support a joyful organizational culture. As competent, confident nurses acting with balance and purpose, we can take the next step to infusing joy.

Showcase of Regional Excellence Recognition As your chapter upholds the call to action, don’t forget to apply for the Showcase of Regional Excellence. The Showcase of Regional Excellence (SRE) is designed to recognize the good work of chapters in relation to the Presidential Call to Action. Recognition is given at the regional level and spans the course of the biennium. Chapters recognized through the 2019-2021 Showcase of Regional Excellence will receive a certificate, have their name posted on the Sigma website, and be recognized during regional meetings at Sigma’s 46th Biennial Convention in 2021. Be on the lookout for more details about how to submit your chapter’s application. Consider the following activities designed to help Sigma chapters infuse joy by achieving awareness, seeking balance and purpose in work, and creating opportunities for co-creation: • Participate in one of Sigma’s highly rated webinars at a chapter meeting. • During exam week, offer self-care and de-stress activities for your chapter members who are students or faculty. Or, consider providing self-care and de-stress activities as a service to members of other healthcare schools or organizations during Nurses Week or another relevant time. • Collaborate with a practice setting to involve clinical nurses in chapter activities. • Invite an interdisciplinary team from a clinical practice setting to present at a chapter meeting. • Conduct chapter programming connected to achieving and maintaining physical and mental health (group walks, counseling resources, connection activities). • Participate in organized fundraising walks or other activities as a group. • Conduct a chapter research day where all members participate in collaborative research. For more information regarding the Presidential Call to Action and the Showcase of Regional Excellence, visit SigmaNursing.org/SRE.
