Welcome and Outcomes Dear Colleagues, Welcome to the heart of Washington, DC! On behalf of Sigma and the NLN, we thank you for joining us at the 2020 Nursing Education Research Conference. This year’s conference theme is Transforming Nursing Education Through Evidence Generation and Translation. During these three days of posters, speakers, and breakout sessions, you have a tremendous opportunity to connect with more than 600 of your peers. Our goal is that you use this time to gain new knowledge, translate that knowledge into practice, and establish new connections with presenters and colleagues in nursing education. Your badge admits you to all conference sessions and events and must be visible to security guards, moderators, and staff. If you misplace your badge, please visit the registration area for a replacement. You will be charged a US $25 replacement fee. For your safety, please write on the back of the badge your emergency contact information, any food or medicine allergies, and any significant medical condition(s). Do not wear your name badge while walking outside. You can recycle your name badge holder after the event in the recycle bins in the registration area.
All Sigma/NLN events are nonsmoking. The hotel and host city may have additional rules in place. Please speak with your hotel concierge if you have any questions.
Oral Presenter Information
Presenters, please refer to your registration information for the time, date, and room of your presentation. No further sign-in is necessary for this event. The Presenter Ready Room is located in Lafayette on the Ballroom Level of the Hotel, and it provides a place to practice presentations. If using slides, presenters may view their presentation in the Presenter Ready Room. Instructions for viewing PowerPoint presentations can be found next to each provided computer station. Please note: Internet access is not available on these computers. Refer to the event schedule for times the Presenter Ready Room is open. The only equipment provided on-site for oral presentations is a computer and an LCD projector. Because of contractual agreements with the audiovisual provider and the possibility of virus transfers, you cannot connect personal equipment (e.g., flash/jump drives, CDs, etc.) to the computers or use it in the presentation rooms. Additional charges are incurred with each violation and may be passed on to you. Please note that this policy will be strictly enforced.
Plenary Sessions
We understand that many event attendees are parents. Due to the nature of Sigma’s professional educational programs, we recommend limiting children’s attendance in sessions to quiet infants and non-separating children. We ask parents to be sensitive to situations – including happy baby noises – that may affect the concentration of session attendees and presenters and step out if necessary. We appreciate your consideration of your fellow conference attendees. Check with your hotel concierge about childcare services.
Refer to the event schedule for poster viewing times. VELCRO®, push pins, or double-sided tape should be used to fasten the poster to the board provided. It is suggested that both sides of the VELCRO® are used. Materials used to ship or carry posters cannot be left in the poster area. Your hotel room is the best place to store materials used to ship or carry posters. Neither Sigma, NLN, nor the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel is responsible for any materials left in the poster area. If posters or other materials are not removed from the Renaissance Ballroom, they will be discarded.

If you have registered for the Nursing Education Research Conference, check in and pick up event materials at the registration desk on the Ballroom Level of the hotel. Early packet pickup is from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25. Refer to the event schedule for standard registration hours.

Do you ever wish you had a clear-cut method for evaluating the predictive validity and classification accuracy of standardized exams when establishing admission, progression, and high-stakes testing policy for your nursing students? If you or your faculty colleagues have struggled to establish evidence-based admissions criteria or to evaluate what standardized test score threshold is most predictive of NCLEX-RN outcomes within your program, this session is for you. The purpose of this session is to explore powerful but accessible methods for evaluating the accuracy of binary (e.g., yes/no, pass/fail) decisions including diagnostic/classification accuracy and ROC (receiver operating characteristics) curves. In addition to a detailed discussion and demonstration of various software tools, attendees will be provided access to a detailed spreadsheet application for use in their own programs.

Synthesis of the rapidly expanding nursing education literature is essential for translating knowledge into nursing education practice. When conducted systematically and rigorously, integrative reviews can render an intimidating volume of research and other evidence readily accessible and useful to busy nurse educators. Although there is ample published guidance for conducting and reporting integrative reviews, the extent to which guidelines are followed can only be known through critical scrutiny by readers of manuscripts and published reviews. In this session a process for reviewing integrative review manuscripts will be proposed, and criteria for critiquing published integrative reviews will be described.

Remediation: A 10-Year Follow Up Systematic Review
Carly M. Kearney, MSN, RN In recent years, leaders of national organizations have called for the profession to build the science of nursing education through quality research. Over the past decade, the use of remediation has infused the pedagogy of nursing education and is often cited as an effective strategy in facilitating student success. As a follow-up to Pennington and Spurlock’s 2010 research evaluating the effectiveness of remediation and NCLEX-RN success, this systematic review examines the literature related to the topical area since the original publication. The current review consists of both systematic and exploratory searches, with 13 articles meeting inclusion criteria. It was concluded that the evolutionary state of the science surrounding remediation and NCLEX-RN success has not advanced. Within nursing education, conceptual dissonance of the term “remediation” may be hindering development of the science in this area. This presentation will provide insights into the systematic review process and offer directions for future research.

When tempers rise or situations become volatile and unbearable, nurses can use strategies, such as training in how to hold critical conversations, to prevent disruptive and harmful behaviors. This program provides nurses with the knowledge and tools to react appropriately to a crucial conversation when under stress. Educational activities not only raise awareness of these issues, but can also provide skills, training, and knowledge of how to reduce the frequency and impact of incivility.

A Gender-Informed Approach to Nursing Research
John C. Mikovits, MSN, RN, CHC This session aims to provide nurse researchers with foundational knowledge to take a gender-informed approach to nursing research by being inclusive of all gender identities, from research proposal and demographics questionnaires, to the purpose of the research and dissemination of the results. Inclusivity of all genders can advance nursing research, education, and practice by guiding the development of knowledge and interventions to reduce disparities among all gender identities.

Comparing the Simulation and Traditional Clinical Environments: The Challenges of Observational Educational Research Traditional clinical is considered the gold standard of experiential learning. This rating assumes that the clinical experience allows students to reinforce the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom and foundational lab setting. In reality, however, each student’s experience in clinical is unique, based on the variability of the clinical setting and patient care needs. Simulation is a teaching strategy frequently utilized in nursing education. It has been shown to be an effective substitution for traditional clinical and provides a partial remedy for the randomness of the actual patient care experience. Both environments provide valuable learning experiences, but little is known about how they actually compare. A multi-site observational study was conducted to compare simulation and traditional clinical focusing on the activities occurring in each setting. This presentation will discuss the results of this study as well as discuss the challenges of conducting a multi-year, multi-site observational field research study.
