Sewing in fall

THE

BLOUSE

DEAR SEWING ENTHUSIASTS We are super excited for this featurette and that you‘ve found us. Our new sewing patterns shop „sisterMAGpatterns“ launched only this year and we‘ve been busy creating patterns, shooting fashion and putting together the best patterns we have. Usually our magazine is a wide array of topics but as we are moving into the sewing world we want to make sure that you can find what you want: our patterns that we create with love and a high standard for handmade modern clothing. Who we are? sisterMAGpatterns is the long awaited patterns shop and ressource for DIY patterns and all styles from the sisterMAG team. A sustainable and conscious lifestyle says NO to Fast Fashion and YES to homemade, DIY, individual pieces created by yourself. You know the worth of your clothes when you‘ve created every seam and detail.

For a long time handmade fashion meant jersey sweaters and untailored garments. We‘ve grown up with the understanding that handmade clothes are not less fashionable than bought ones but exactly the opposite. Our mom Evi Neubauer studied Textile Engineering in Berlin/ Germany in the 1970s and 80s. Because of her living in the GDR she was never able to pursue a career as a fashion designer but used her creativity at home for the most lavish garments and crazy ideas. This passion contributed to more than 50 issues of the online magazine sisterMAG by her daughters Toni & Thea with extravagant cover dresses and collections inspired by the newest runway trends. We hope you enjoy our featurette filled with our favourite blouse patterns and an epic shoot with our Italian graphic designer Ilaria. Enjoy!

Smocking is an embroidery technique used to gather fabric so that it can stretch. Before elastic, smocking was commonly used in cuffs, bodices, and necklines in garments where buttons were undesirable.

The pattern features smocked embroidery at the back and the front of the blouse. It leads to an almost babydoll-like silhouette.

Smocking was used most extensively in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but is experiencing a new high with usage in High Fashion or trends like the #CottageCore Movement

And if you want to really make a colour statement: make the whole outfit in a bold tone such as this bright yellow. We love the hue that reminds us of the falling leaves in fall. What colour would you choose?

Tracing the history of a garment for the people

THE

BLOUSE

The biography of the blouse is a story of swings settling in equilibrium – from peasantry to posh to class agnostic, and from male to female to androgynous. Though the blouse has been a mostly unfamiliar entity in my life, I do have notions of the things I do not know. My personal history with it dates back about 20 years; I remember my mom trying not to burn hers with an iron. To my understanding, it is a women’s garment. But the one I remember most is the “puffy shirt” worn by Jerry Seinfeld while promoting a benefit to clothe the

homeless. Elaine, who set up the benefit, is incensed by Jerry’s pageantry: “You‘re supposed to be a compassionate person! That cares about poor people! You look like you‘re gonna swing in on a chandelier!” She likens him to the Count of Monte Cristo, of the eponymous 1844 novel by Alexander …
