EDITORIAL
A popular saying in our parents‘ home is: »Everything has to change so that it stays as beautiful as it is.« It seems to us that this motto particularly fits sisterMAG No. 58. The past few months have brought many changes on. Our team changed completely and also the projects that we realize with our agency arm sisterMAG Studio developed into a different direction.
In terms of content, this issue focuses on what is probably the most beautiful summer garment that exists – the dress. And because travelling is limited this year, we shot our new sisterMAG Collection on our home turf in Berlin. More than six new patterns await you in the @sistermagpatterns eShop and we are excited to see your versions of these patterns. Show us your creations and share them under the hashtag #sistermagpatterns.
So it was only natural that we also needed a breath of fresh air for our sisterMAG. Thus, we sat down and »made a lot of things ourselves« again. Because that was always at the core of the sisterMAG brand and that‘s exactly what we love. We used the set kitchen of a sisterMAG Studio project for our watermelon food feature, illustrations were drawn, drinks mixed, and clothes sewn. You will also notice several changes in the design and layout.
If you are still not in summer mood after leafing through this issue, we recommend mixing a Watermelon Mojito immediately, created by our in-house bartender Cris Santos. The watermelon not only accompanies us on »National Watermelon Day« on August 3, but through the entire sisterMAG issue. After we prepared and consumed around 20 watermelons for our productions, each team member can now confidently say: »I carried a watermelon.«

three-tiered cake For a summer garden party or a birthday party during a hot day - this threetier cake does not require baking. You only need a few watermelons.
It’s best to use a template for the three sizes. Our cylinders are approximately 25cm, 20cm and 15cm in diameter. Garnish with fresh fruit. Special tip: To cover up unsightly spots or edges, we used wafer-thin layers of watermelon, placed around the edge.

watermelon pizza Ready in 5 minutes and perfect for an evening with friends: fresh watermelon pizza made from a thick slice of watermelon
Cut a 2.5cm slice from the middle of a watermelon. Place the slice on a large plate. Garnish with blackberries, gooseberries, strawberries and pomegranate. We added basil minette. Chopped basil with large leaves is also possible.

watermelon salad In summer, this salad is perfect as an appetizer. Cut watermelons into large triangles and geometric shapes. Place in a deep garnish bowl. Particularly suitable: gooseberries, blackberries, blueberries and honeydew melon - shaped here with a small flower cutter. Garnish with mint and drizzle lemon juice over it. sister-mag.com

vanilla cake with swiss buttercream frosting Serves 8-10 Difficulty: Medium Time : 35 minutes active, 40 mins inactive
You can decorate this classic American style cake any way you like - I decided to use freeze dried fruits and fresh cherries for an organic but super punchy look. Yellow Cake 400 g All Purpose Flour 25 g Cornstarch 1 t salt 1 t baking powder 1 t baking soda 340 g Unsalted Butter, Softened 400 g White sugar 3 large eggs 1 packet vanilla sugar

1. Prepare 3 9’’ cake pans, or for a cute and tall cake, 4 6’’ cake pans. 2. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees celsius, or 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease the pans and cut parchment paper disks to match the size of the bottom of the pan. This will help the cakes easily release. 3. Whisk together the dry ingredients. Set aside. 4. Cream together the butter and the sugar until light and fluffy- This will take it’s time, about 5 minutes if the butter is soft. You can use a hand mixer or a stand mixer. Add the eggs in slowly (I like to crack them into a measuring cup and pour them in a slow steady stream). Make sure the egg is incorporating fully before adding too much more. The mixture shouldnt break. Add the vanilla extract. 5. In 4 additions, add the dry mix and the buttermilk a little at a time, Finally mixing just until the batter is uniform. 6. Evenly distribute between the pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before frosting.

Schweizer Meringuen-Buttercreme 6 große Eiweiße 450 g Zucker 1 Päckchen Vanillezucker Prise Salz 350 g weiche aber kalte Butter 1. In einer Schüssel über einem Wasserbad (die Schüssel darf das simmernde Wasserbad nicht berühren) die Eiweiße und den Zucker rühren, bis die Mischung warm und der Zucker komplett aufgelöst ist. Es darf kein körniges Gefühl mehr zwischen den Fingern entstehen, wenn man die Mischung verreibt. 2. Die Mischung mit einem Handrührgerät oder einer Küchenmaschine aufschlagen, bis die Creme steif ist und die Spitzen nicht mehr in sich zusammenfallen. Wenn die Mischung fertig ist, das Salz einrühren.

3. Die Mischung komplett abkühlen lassen, falls sie noch warm ist. Dann einen Esslöffel der Butter nach dem anderen mit dem Mixer einrühren. Wenn die gesamte Butter eingerührt ist noch so lange weiterschlagen, bis die gewünschte Textur erreicht ist. Falls die Mischung zu dick wird, kann sie über dem Wasserbad ganz kurz angewärmt und dann nochmals gemixt werden. Falls sie zu dünn ist, etwas im Kühlschrank stehen lassen und dann nochmals mixen. 4. Dann mit einem Silikonschaber bei Bedarf vorsichtig die Lebensmittelfarbe unterheben – Pastellfarben sind am einfachsten zu erreichen und sehen schön aus. Ich habe Pink und etwas Schwarz für meinen Kuchen verwendet. 5. Mit frischen Kirschen und gefriergetrockneten Früchten dekorieren (ich habe Johannisbeeren und Himbeeren genommen)

Fill glass with ice. Mix 1oz of watermelon nectar (e.g. puree watermelon) or juice with 2oz of rhubarb lemonade. Then pour in alcohol-free Light Live Hugo. Garnish with fresh fruits and mint.

three kinds of frozen watermelon In summer we like to enjoy ice-cold things. That is why we have prepared three variations of frozen watermelon for you: ice cubes, granita and ice pops make every heart beat faster and are all made super fast.
Watermelon Honey Granita Serves 6-8 Time : 15 minutes active, 2.5 hours inactive
500 g watermelon, cubed 4 tbsp honey, especially wildflower honey Juice of 3 limes

Blend the ingredients with an immersion blender, or a standing blender and pour into a shallow glass or ceramic casserole. Place in the freezer and stir with a fork every 30 minutes for 2 and a half hours. At the end it should be like fluffy shaved ice- you can decorate this with lime zest and serve right out of the freezer.

Strawberry Watermelon Ice Pops Serves 6 Time : 15 minutes active, 2.5 hours inactive 500 g watermelon 150 g ripe strawberries Juice of 2 lemons 2 tbsp white sugar
Blend the ingredients together and strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove any remaining seeds. Whisk in the lemon juice, the white sugar and if extra citrus flavor is desired, add the lemon zest. Pour these into popsicle molds, adding edible flowers, herbs or thinly sliced berries or cucumbers as desired to make beautiful popsicles sure to make an impression. When your mold is full, you can use anything left over to make watermelon ice cubes. Both will bring a super fun reprieve to a hot summer day!

watermelon pommes with fresh dip Who determines that watermelons can only be enjoyed in a sweet way? With the fresh spices and yoghurt dip, these fries can also be served during a barbecue.
For the dip, mix 200g plain yogurt with a little lime zest and Tajin spice. If you can‘t find Tajin spice, just use chilli with salt and a little lime peel. Cut watermelon into approx. 1 cm wide sticks and place on plates. Sprinkle with lime zest and tajin.

Is language really the dress of thought? Proverbs are on to our vestimentary tricks
We have already mentioned it at the beginning of this column: Proverbs and sayings are a treasure. Not only are they concise. They can also develop authority: »Without hope is like being without a dress. Even in warm weather you’re cold. « Who would dare question such insightful statements? (By the way, this one too is of Russian origin, they say, like so many proverbs.) One simply does not argue with their wisdom relying on the condensed experience of generations.

This issue is dedicated to the dress. Before going any further, we should therefore address the white elephant in the room (was that the metaphor?) and clarify one thing: While the noun »dress« can also refer to »clothing« or »apparel« in general, it is now more commonly used to describe an outer garment consisting of a onepiece bodice and skirt. In German, the language in which this text was originally written, proverbs typically use the equivalent of »dress« which is the same as for »clothes«. Never mind the broader terminological focus here as the main message applies either way. Proverbs can do even more than summarised above, namely for those using them, the keyword being: »Clothes make the man.« How we use language tells others a lot about us, and the use of proverbs and sayings can be, ahem, the cherry on top. British English with its idioms is once again a good example, because from a certain level, the improvement of learners’ language skills is largely
Moreover, proverbs are pictorial and activate our imagination. Why say curtain when you can also choose the »window dress«? (This works better in German: »Fensterkleid«.) Regardless, we would like to maintain here: Proverbs make our communication more entertaining and our language more charming. »Language is the dress of thought,« the English linguist and journalist Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) stated, and »proverbs are the flowers of language,« we say lyrically; however, in opposition these flowers can acquire the power of a sledgehammer. Proverbs do all these things, and we are not even getting into metaphors because without those we could hardly formulate two sentences. The question remains: how applicable, how true are proverbs in our life today?

»Proverbs are the flowers of language.« measured based on whether they have mastered idioms and are comfortable using them. How posh someone speaks – this regards mostly native speakers – not only indicates their home area but can also provide listeners with information about their socio-economic background. Meanwhile, things are slightly different in Germany where dialects, including their proverbial qualities, are sometimes perceived as evidence of a certain educational level, unfortunately and unfairly of course. If you train to lose your dialect, these embellishments get lost as well. By the way, Shakespeare also observed: »The soul of this man is in his clothes.«

One possible interpretation of this would be that disguise makes little sense. As we know, the Emperor’s New Clothes did not get him far either ... Only, what is the alternative? A different observation can give hope:
sincerely hope this belief of mine is not just youthful optimism: “You receive people according to their dress and dismiss them according to their intellect.” How successfully someone »dresses« a professional position (literal translation from German) will emerge sooner or later, and their wardrobe is not the indicator. »You can’t eat even the most beautiful dress.« What not only Carrie Bradshaw would dispute vigorously, I assume, ultimately boils down to a question of priorities and points to another essential aspect: subjective perception. The unforgotten Coco Chanel famously postulated: »No woman gets too cold in her most beautiful dress.«
»The truth has a beautiful face, but torn clothes« since apparently there is another school, one which attaches less importance to the outer appearance given by clothes. »Even if my dress is black, my conscience is pure,« goes another manifestation of Russian wisdom. We also learn that even if they are intact, clothes cannot always save the day, because – and I

BOOK COLUMN You must read today!
#readinginsteadoftraveling - when I saw the German version of this little hashtag on Instagram for the first time in March at the height of the Corona lockdown, it seemed like a pointer to me. If you can‘t really travel to all the places you have planned for 2020, then at least do it in books! Since then, I have added 10 books to my 2020 Reading Challenge - of course, much less than all the high-volume readers, but twice as much as I did last year. And the ritual of picking up a book first every morning rather than my mobile phone has brought me a lot of peace in these turbulent times. For the third installation of our book column Martina and I took different paths. With »Untamed« by Glennon Doyle, Martina selected a modern guide novel in the tradition of Elizabeth Gilbert or Marie Forleo. I introduce you to the five-part »Cazalet Chronicle« by Elizabeth Jane Howard as well as 3 books around (water)melons. Have fun reading!

Sparkling, flowing, intoxicating: The most beautiful book dress this year undoubtedly wears Glennon Doyle‘s new book »Untamed«! The American author may still less known, but if you like Elizabeth Gilbert’s and Marie Forleo‘s books, you will love Glennon Doyle. Her new book »Untamed« is a typical guide, as you know it from American contemporary literature, which deals with female empowerment and self-discovery. All read before? Certainly not in this way! Because in »Untamed« Glennon Doyle gets to the bottom of things and asks straightforward: Who were you before the world told you who you should be? In our constant striving to be good women, citizens, mothers and daughters, Doyle writes, we per-
suaded ourselves that personal forms of happiness are not worth striving for. Instead, we follow conventional forms of happiness and try to fit into a social system that only celebrates standardized forms of satisfaction as successful life plans. This is inevitably followed, according to the author, by the point of absolute frustration where we have to recognize that prescribed happiness does not make everyone happy. In an inspiring and authentic way, Glennon Doyle advocates to finally shape your life according to your own, individual ideas. Two decades (and what kind of decades ... 1930s to 1950s!). Three generations. Four siblings. The chronicles tell the story of the Cazalet family, an English upper middle-class family in the late 1930s. Through the different family members, the historical time that should completely change the country, society and family, is developing. Let me vocalise some thoughts that have been going through my head. Everyone reading these lines will have survived the past week in some way or another. You’ll hear very different stories: some are frustrated, some delighted by the slower pace of life, while others struggle with financial problems. As restrictions are being phased out, many ask themselves what will come next. Can I go on holiday, when are the kids going back to school, how will life continue? One thing is already clear: how life is perceived has changed drastically.

Nose-and-mouth-covered shopping is not much fun, neither is having a drink at the pub without seeing the regular waiter’s friendly face, and the neighbour’s annoyed expression when you forget about a rule disrupts harmonious everyday life. Empty
seats in theatres, operas and varietés change the mood among the few spectators that are left. What is this summer going to be like? Are the fun-accustomed and holiday-hungry Germans going to be satisfied visiting local parks, castles and amusement parks?

Or could this be the summer of renovating our homes while the usual coasts of Mallorca, Bodrum and Marmaris are locked down with strict restrictions? All of this is now part of real life, after we had to learn that the unthinkable could become a reality from one day to the next. So I think that we have to find something that will make our lives fun outside of the originally planned adventures. Some might say that their usual activities of hiking, biking and outdoor sports come in handy in these times when our immune systems are under attack.

But we also need some activity where we can plan, invest and reap the benefits of hard work in a different way so we can enjoy a relaxed glass of wine in the evening. On my journeys, I have met many colleagues who are very grateful to have their small, previously rugged gardens to take care of in these times. This piece of nature with its sky, clouds and rain suddenly filled the hole that we used to fill by travelling miles and miles. Herb gardens are being planted, roses revived and rows of potatoes prepared!

These small retreats are meaningful. The urban, cityslicker in his thirties might smile dismissively – until he knows the joy of a cool beer after a long day’s work in the garden. He’ll think of ribwort and dismiss the joys of planting, growing and harvesting and won’t recognise that the first small gardens originated halfway through the 19th century for reasons similar to today. A man named Heinrich Karl Gesell built the first beds on a meadow in the Johannapark in Leipzig that had previously been a playing area – to get kids to do something useful.

The area was surrounded by a fence, marking the first Leipzig Schrebergarten. Moritz Schreber himself did not live to see this development. An orthopaedist and professor at the university of Leipzig, he was the spiritual founding father of the initiative that built the first garden. The gardens and club were named in honour of his work on movement and sports. During his lifetime, Moritz Schreber was known to use strict and, in today’s view, very questionable methods on children, earning him a reputation not only as gardener but also as somewhat of a bogeyman.

Today, our enjoyment of a piece of land, a small backyard or garden in a club should not be dependent on the perfectly shaped cucumber or straight rosebushes - »our land« should be an escape that offers relaxation, pride and contentment in times of restrictions. You might call the American photographer and gallery owner ALFRED STIEGLITZ the father of fashion photography. There is no way of speaking about fashion photography without mentioning this man: RICHARD AVEDON. The American was the main photographer at Harper’s Bazaar and also took pictures for The New Yorker. Countless Vogue covers came into being under his creative direction. Stars like Marilyn Monroe, The Beatles, Charlie Chaplin and Brigitte Bardot were photographed by him. His photos entice with their

Testino of sexual misconduct in the #metoo debate. In his moving exhibition »ALTA MODA«, first shown at the Lima Mate Museum, he shows the results of a five-year project observing Peruvian traditions and the history of photography. The photographs are of Peruvian men and women from the region of Cusco dressed in their celebratory garments, colourfully dyed and embroidered in meticulous craftsmanship – to Testino, these are equal to the haute couture of the grand runways of the fashion world.
Originally from Peru, MARIO TESTINO, who is currently based in London, was called the »most well-known fashion photographer« by ZEIT – but he is also one of the more controversial ones: several of the people he worked with over the course of his career have accused

He discovered many other subjects outside of fashion, always claiming that he had many or no styles. Like life and fashion, he was adamant that a photograph always had to be invented anew. Many of his shots are kept in black and white and reflect his classic approach to fashion. On the hunt for a perfect reproduction of his work, Karl Lagerfeld found the workshop of renowned master craftsman and silk-screen printer Gerhard Steidl in Göttingen. Their close professional relationship resulted in the establishment of two successful publishing companies. The partnership survived even Lagerfeld’s death, as the retrospective »Karl Lagerfeld FOTOGRAFIE« at the Moritzburg in Halle was curated by Gerhard Steidl together with Chanel Fashion Image Director Eric Pfrunder. They brought together around 300 photographs that La-

gerfeld himself had picked for an exhibition in Halle. »An exhibition like this has never existed before in central Germany!« proclaims the museum. The curation of the presentation at the Moritzburg is bound to cause as much of a stir as Karl Lagerfeld’s fashion shows. Upon entering the courtyard, visitors are greeted by an army of life-size self-portraits of Karl Lagerfeld. The exhibition presents the entire range of photographic media that Lagerfeld used: everything from daguerreotypes to platinum prints, polaroids, dry-plate prints, silk-screen prints, hand-coloured algraphies, acrylic inkjet prints and backlit LEDpanels is there. The photographs show his many passions: architecture, landscapes, abstract art, portraits, self-portraits and, of course, his fashion photography for Fendi, Chanel and others.

One of the most interesting objects would have to be his photographic staging of orphans and lovers Daphnis and Chloe after the ancient poet Longus, as well as an 18m long folding screen of Homer’s Odyssey. Odysseus was the king of the island of Ithaca. His ruse, the Trojan horse, secured the Greek people a victory over the people of Troja. It then took him 10 years to return to Ithaca and his wife Penelope. Karl Lagerfeld used this

odyssey to show beautiful models in different settings, translating the adventures and dangers of the journey into photographs. The screen perfectly adapts to the historical surroundings of the cellar inside the Moritzburg with its Christian icons and sculptures. A truly mythical atmosphere that is best experienced in real life!

On February 19th 2019, Karl Lagerfeld died after a short illness. He kept his extraordinary attitude until the end: never bound to anything, as he wished. While he had several male muses, it was two women that he worked closest with: the British creative and author Amanda Harlech („Lagerfeld‘s eye outside of Paris“) and his representative and successor at Chanel, Virginie Viard. Karl Lagerfeld always was a conscious loner, a virtuous master with unusual willingness to work and an excessive love of books. He was not the king of all hearts – his honesty never failed to come through and people that he didn’t enjoy working with were not in his circles for

long. Only his cat, Choupette, enjoyed relentless adoration from him. His appearance was perceived as slightly crazy by many, something that should be explained by the amount of genius present in this single man. He was a fashion designer for several external labels as well as his own, photographer, published, parfumeur, professor at the University of the Arts in Vienna and costume designer for plays and opera. He was the first popular fashion designer who was willing to cater to mass markets. H&M profited from his designs: Lagerfeld famously said »Mass elitism has always been my dream, and it is the future in these modern times.« For over 21 years, the head of embroidery Hubert Barrere was a Lagerfeld employee at Chanel daughter Paraffection for the promotion of extraordinary craftsmanship. After Lagerfeld’s death, he said: »His encyclopaedic knowledge, his ability to work without tiring, his willingness to fight, his natural talent to always be two or three steps ahead. His visionary ability to understand the future and make it fit for the present.« That was him – Karl Lagerfeld!

Not only your body needs the right dress, your own four walls will also significantly benefit from appropriate »window dresses«. They might bring much-needed darkness or just add a certain something that truly makes you feel at home. Picking the right curtains isn’t always easy. This feature is supposed to ease your journey to finding the perfect »window dress« by offering advice.
CURTAIN IS NOT CURTAIN There are two kinds of curtains. Net curtains are exactly what we think of with Grandma‘s top curtains: transparent. Lace or openwork lace is still used today, but more airy fabrics like batiste or airy-light voile look more modern. Curtains or drapes are opaque and made from heavy fabrics. Most drapes are therefore floor-to-floor, so that they offer sufficient privacy.

There are two kinds of seams on curtains: individual pleating, also known as »curling ribbon«, and those with clear, symmetrical pleating which are called »pleated ribbon«. Curled ribbon is great for short cur tains of light and heavy weight, while pleated ribbon is suitable for a calm contrast to heavy and patterned fabrics.
In addition, there is also the possibility of applying cur tains to a rod using socalled »eyelet tape« or punched eyelet s.

HOW TO MOUNT There is no one perfect solution to attaching curtains. Every room is unique and will need specific solutions. But don’t be afraid – a beautiful finish can always be achieved! The well-known classic is the C U R TA I N RO D . With a rod, you can change up the actual curtain without much fuss. Important to keep in mind: attach the rod at least ten centimetres above the window. If you want to stretch the room visually, put the rod even higher. We’d also recommend using a rod that is horizontally longer than the actual window (around ten to fifteen centimetres). T E L E S C O P I C RO D S are perfect because they can be adjusted to the desired length. Next to classics curtain rods, there are R A I L SY S T E M S for curtains that are usually attached right be-

low the ceiling. They’re great for lower to medium-height rooms. The advantage: Curtains can be opened and closed without any fuss. With a rail system, you can also choose two parallel rails to layer several different curtains over another. The systems are also great for floor-length fabrics. Another option is attaching curtains with a W I R E C A B L E , which is especially useful for light fabrics. For wire cable attachments, you’ll need sturdy walls that can support the tense stretch of the cable. The curtain itself can be attached with small hooks or metal eyelets. Advantage: this option is perfectly suitable for strange places such as angled walls or to go around corners. If you’d like to use the curtain as a room separator, a wire cable can also be an option.

HERZ & BLUT De ar Jule s, why did you hang a cur tain in your hallway? Behind the mustard-colored curtain in our hallway is a kind of folding door to a wonderful lumber room or the chamber of horrors, as it is affectionately called in our family. The folding door construction is not awful, but I like the look of the curtains, which always remind me of Paris and boutique hotels. Which fabric / material is the cur tain made of ? In fact, this curtain is made of synthetic fabric, which I don‘t really like. However, the advantage is that the fabric is very light and the clamp rod on which the curtain hangs can withstand the curtain without sagging. Interior and design blogger Jules Villbrandt uses a curtain in her hallway, where there is actually no window to hide. We asked her why and how the curtains change the hallway.
How has the »room« change d as a result? A curtain works wonders, without applying a lot of colour, a few panels of fabric can create a completely different feeling within a space. The room looks so much more sophisticated and naturally tidy. A lot can disappear behind curtains.

The bedroom is the calm space of any home. Screening this area from light and view is the main priority for creating a calm and cosy ambiance. We recommend floor-length black-out curtains in muted colours to keep both light and heat outside. Colours and patterns that are too crazy might disrupt this. Angled windows are not well suited for these types of curtains – a roller blind might be the way to go in this case.
String curtains are a playful and decorative element for any home that also keep out flies, gnats and other critters. They are great for doorways to balconies or gardens.
K I TC H E N In the kitchen, practicality and screening your space from view are the central focus. We recommend light and translucent curtains that aren’t much longer than the windows – cooking- and eating-related splatters are not compatible with floor-length curtains. Choose models with loops or eyelets and pick a material that can be washed frequently. Cotton and linen are ideal.
L I V I N G RO O M Keeping unwanted eyeballs out of your living room is important, but curtains should still look nice. We’d recommend floor-length curtains for any living room, as they make ceilings look higher and spread a cosy atmosphere. An addition of light or transparent fabrics can be made to let in more light during the day. The colour can, of course, be matched to the rest of your decor but doesn’t necessarily have to be! Maximalists might enjoy experimental colour and pattern clashes. For simply decorative purposes, curtains with fabric loops are more than suitable, but if you’re planning to move the fabric a lot, metal eyelets might be a better idea – or simply go for a rail system.

HELPFUL TIPS A few more tips about curtains and drapes
At t a c h y o u r r o d s h o r i zontally! Pay attention to the attachment s of your rods! Curtains can be heavy and the constant movement of opening and closing them is additional stress. It’s really important to fix the rods on the outside and in the centre to offer more support. The right length is key! If you pick floor-length curtains, have them end about two to three centimetres above the floor for a harmonious appearance. Short curtains should end five to ten centimetres below the window frame.

Always use an accurate level to check if your rods are really horizontal. You’ll always notice if they’re not attached properly! Le ave enough space betwe en the cur tain and the wall! Leave between ten and fifteen centimetres of space between your curtains and the wall so air can circulate. This is especially important when using heavy fabrics. Stay true to your own style! A little unusual style is always welcome – it’s your home and your rules! If you’re up for an experiment, go for it!

Especially after creating Meghan Markle’s wedding dress, the label garnered attention. Oh, how we love French labels! Maje is one of those that our team can’t get enough of. The label, founded by Judith Milgrom in the late ’90s in Paris, wants to dress working women. Many of their dresses are loosely playful and perfect for everyday wear but the collection also always features more elegant pieces. Those of us whose wardrobes are

Last but not least, we’re currently loving the Berlin-based label Zazi Vintage by Dutch Jeanne Margot de Kroon: As a proponent of slow fashion, her designs are all produced sustainably with fair wages for her seamstresses. Next to dresses, the label mainly makes coats. Every piece tells its own story (from the family that produced it to the reason behind the name of the final piece) that can be read on the website. Her transparency is clearly successful and the designs are now available in over 30 countries. The inspiration for her dresses and the prints woven into her fabrics are taken from trips to Asia where Jeanna visits her seamstresses on production. We think it’s absolutely worth it to invest in a gorgeous dress with a history by Zazi Vintage!

Have you ever worn the dress since then?
My dress fittings were such a highlight during the wedding preparations. I wanted to share that event with my mum, my maid of honour and my three bridesmaids. We were quite a few people but it just worked for me and we had so much fun. I knew exactly what my dream dress was supposed to look like, so I tried on 30 different dresses in five stores. Number 29 ended up being my final choice. It was quite the dress-craze!
Actually yes, because we re-took some photos of the fittings after we got married. And we have an afterwedding photoshoot planned as well that I’m really looking forward to.
The most beautiful moment was definitely when my mum led me to the altar and my husband saw me for the first time. I’ll remember that beautiful moment forever.

On which occasion did you wear the dress? Actually yes, because we re-took some photos of the fittings after we got married. And we have an afterwedding photoshoot planned as well that I’m really looking forward to. Where did you buy the dress? As is common in the vintage community, I bought it from another collector, or vintage-lover, in Berlin. We often pass on these pieces from one lady to the next. I love using platforms like Etsy where you can find beautiful and mostly well-kept dresses.
Which moment or anecdote do you associate with the dress? I don’t have a specific story behind this dress but it still means a lot to me. It was one of the first old dresses I bought when I first got into vintage fashion. It’s from the ’40s and still in amazing condition. In the meantime, I have sold many of the dresses from that first period. This one, however, is and has always been one of my favourites that I’ve had for many years. I love the dainty pattern and light fabric. Like many of my old dresses, it’s handmade – when you turn it inside out, you can see every single step of the process of how it was made. A little greeting from the past.
Have you worn the dress since then? Very often – as soon as it gets hot outside, I’ll wear it again. And I’ll keep wearing it for years to come.

I didn’t even think about it too much when I put it on for my boyfriend’s birthday dinner. About two hours later, it had become THE dress that I wore when Stefan proposed to me. Last year in November, on a warm summer night in the Seychelles.

the house that lars built What is the story behind your dress? I LOVE dresses. I have basically only worn dresses exclusively for about five years because 1) They are SO easy to wear 2) They are comfortable (at least the ones that I like that are loose and fit like pajamas!) and 3) They can grow with your size. I spotted this Marimekko dress, which is a classic design from their archives a few years ago and found out that they were going to re-release it. I contacted several Marimekko stores and was put on a waiting list. I then found out that it was going to be sold as a legacy collection at Anthropologie so I then contacted Anthropologie headquarters...I asked my social media audience...I was desperate. In the end, it was released and thanks to one of my readers, I nabbed it immediately. I think it‘s the one piece of clothing I‘ve put in the most amount
of work to get. I didn‘t have a special occasion in mind when I went on my search, but to me it‘s perfection. The pattern is bright and cheerful but not corny. It‘s rainbow without being too in your face about it. The shape is loose and summery but also references the past.

A running shoe guide There is an old European fairytale, the kind passed down from one generation to the next by word of mouth, that speaks of a mythological boot with magic powers that allows the wearer to cover great distances in a short period of time. It was Goethe, himself always preferring a good glass of wine to a hike, who in Faust II gave credence to the socalled Siebenmeilenstiefel. Today, running is as popular a sport as any. We are fascinated by breezy, speedy running shoes – and they should also be comfortable, of course. Many manufacturers are now outbidding each other to bring new lightweight, fast, and joint-gentle shoes to market.

For the increasingly popular off-piste runs, known as trail running, all the well-known brands have now developed their own models with grippier soles and greater stability. Meanwhile, track and field athletes sport special superlight shoes with pointed spikes for training on synthetic tracks. However, shoes for running on forest trails and asphalt by far comprise the largest part of the market. These are ideal for most hobby runners. When buying new running shoes, consider that their lifespan is not only measured in years but also in kilometres. In other words, even a lightly used running shoe should be replaced after about two years since the cushioning hardens regardless of how much it’s worn. Even a robust running shoe can reach the end of its lifecycle after just a year if its owner is clocking 1,000 kilometers. In this respect, more ambitious runners should keep a running logbook (which is also very motivating). We’ll cover more of this in a later sisterMAG issue.

This prevents the foot from being stressed too long at the same pressure points. It is also practical for versatile training types and terrains. More cushioned running shoes, for example, are suitable for long runs thanks to their comfort features, while less cushioned shoes are often lighter and yield more speed for short distances and sprints.
