The Elements within Ayurveda


SPACE - Akasha ✤

GUNAS: light, soft, subtle, cold

KARMA (ACTION): expansive, brings freedom, has no form, communication, expression, vibration

SANKHYA: ears - hearing - vocal chords - speech

MULA: cranium

Vata Dosha

Vishuddha Chakra


AKASHA AND FOOD ✤

gives the food sound, hollowness and resonance

sprouts, fresh vegetable juice

hollow veggies with tiny seeds

algae, spirulina, wheat grass

narcotics, hallucinogens


AKASHA + MIND ✤

feelings of emptiness and loneliness

fear and anxiety

expression + communication of thoughts, feelings and emotions

relationship to quiet and alone time

clarity


AIR - VAYU ✤

GUNAS: mobile, dry, rough, cold, subtle, light, clear

KARMA: movement of consciousness, thoughts, creativity

SANKHYA: skin - touch - hands - grasping/receiving

MULA: chest, heart, lungs

Vata dosha

Anahata Chakra


VAYU AND FOOD ✤

creates the skin, feel and texture of food

dried fruits, raw vegetables

rough vegetables like broccoli, cabbages, sprouts

lettuce, bitter and leafy greens, nightshades

dry compacted legumes like black beans and chickpeas


VAYU + MANASA

restless, active mind

inspired and uplifted

quickly changing, moving mind


FIRE - AGNI ✤

GUNAS: hot, sharp, penetrating, dry, light, subtle

KARMA: transformation, metabolism, understanding/ comprehension, temperature

SANKHYA: eyes - vision- feet - walking

MULA: solar plexus

Pitta dosha

Manipura Chakra


AGNI AND FOOD ✤

transforms the shape and visual characteristics of food

hot spices(hing, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, hot peppers, cayenne pepper)

sour fruits (pineapple, lemon, grapefruit, tamarind)

sour berries like cranberries

fermented foods (alcohol, pickles, vinegar, soy sauce)

oily foods


AGNI + MANAS

are you passionate and driven?

do you crave power, success and recognition?

is there good understanding + comprehension?


WATER - APAS ✤

GUNAS: liquid, cool, dull, soft, smooth, heavy

KARMA: malleable, fluid, life-giving, lubrication, cohesion

SANKHYA: tongue - taste - reproductive organs procreation

MULA: upper pelvis

Pitta + Kapha dosha

Svadhisthana Chakra


APAS + FOOD ✤

give taste to the food

milk and dairy products

juicy fruits (plums, watermelon, grapes, papaya, peaches)

Coconut water

juicy vegetables (zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes)

salty food


APAS + MIND

Do you easily go with the flow? and adapt

Are you compassionate and like to bring things together:

do you consider yourself emotional?


EARTH - PRUTHVI ✤

GUNAS: static, heavy, dull, gross, smooth, rough, hard, dense, cool

KARMA: strength, foundation, stamina, endurance, immunity

SANKHYA: nose - smell - excretion - anus

MULA: lower pelvis and legs

Kapha dosha

Muladhara Chakra


PRUTHVI AND FOOD ✤

gives scent/smell to the food

seeds and nuts

meat of all kinds

mushrooms, root vegetables

wheat, rice and heavy grains

high mineral content in food


PRUTHVI + MANAS

Stable, grounded mind

Do you resist change or quick change?

Are you calm and easy going?

Is the mind stubborn?


APPLICATION ✤

Like increases like and opposite heals

understand the guna/element that is out of balance: what is the symptom and label accordingly

choose food and practices that will balance the quality
